Calcareous spicules closely similar to those previously reported in several species of Heliolites, have been found in another heliolitid species, Squameolites junggarensis Lin et Wang, from a clayey limestone of the lower part of Kuimov Formation, of Homerian (Wenlock) age, in the western part of the Gorny Altai, Siberia. The sclerites are associated with ‘microspheres’, identified also in colonies of an unidentified species of Propora. It is suggested that the microspheres associated with the tabulate corals were their photoautotrophic symbionts.  相似文献

Miocene rissoids from the heterochronous low-salinity seas of the Eastern Paratethys (Early Chokrakian, Karaganian, Late Konkian, Early Sarmatian, and Early Maeotian) were revised. The polyphyletic genus Mohrensternia is subdivided into several generic and subgeneric taxa. The new genus Zhgentia and the new subgenera Rissoa (Turboellina), R. (Pseudoturboellina), and R. Changjiang Estuary, the largest estuary in China, encompasses a wide range of nutrient loading and trophic levels from the rivers to the sea, providing an ideal natural environment to explore relationships between functional diversity, physical/chemical complexity, and ecosystem function. In this study, molecular biological techniques were used to analyze the community structure and diversity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in the sediments of Changjiang Estuary and its adjacent waters in East China Sea. The amoA gene (encoding ammonia monooxygenase subunit A) libraries analysis revealed extensive diversity within the β-Proteobacteria group of AOB, which were grouped into Nitrosospira-like and Nitrosomonas-like lineages. The majority of amoA gene sequences fell within Nitrosospira-like clade, and only a few sequences were clustered with the Nitrosomonas-like clade, indicating that Nitrosospira-like lineage may be more adaptable than Nitrosomonas-like lineage in this area. Multivariate statistical analysis indicated that the spatial distribution of the sedimentary β-Proteobacterial amoA genotype assemblages correlated significantly with nitrate, nitrite, and salinity. The vertical profile of amoA gene copies in gravity cores showed that intense sediment resuspension led to a deeper mixing layer. The horizontal distribution pattern of amoA gene copies was nearly correlated with the clayey mud belt in Changjiang Estuary and its adjacent area in East China Sea, where higher β-Proteobacteria phylogenetic diversity was observed. Meanwhile, those areas with high amoA copies in the surface sediments nearly matched those with low concentrations of dissolved oxygen and ammonium in the bottom water.  相似文献

Molecular phylogenetic evidence indicates that the octocoral family Alcyoniidae is highly polyphyletic, with genera distributed across Octocorallia in more than 10 separate clades. Most alcyoniid taxa belong to the large and poorly resolved Holaxonia–Alcyoniina clade of octocorals, but members of at least four genera of Alcyoniidae fall outside of that group. As a first step towards revision of the family, we describe a new genus, Parasphaerasclera gen. n., and family, Parasphaerascleridae fam. n., of Alcyonacea to accommodate species of Eleutherobia Pütter, 1900 and Alcyonium Linnaeus, 1758 that have digitiform to digitate or lobate growth forms, completely lack sclerites in the polyps, and have radiates or spheroidal sclerites in the colony surface and interior. Parasphaerascleridae fam. n. constitutes a well-supported clade that is phylogenetically distinct from all other octocoral taxa. We also describe a new genus of Alcyoniidae, Sphaerasclera gen. n., for a species of Eleutherobia with a unique capitate growth form. Sphaerasclera gen. n. is a member of the Anthomastus–Corallium clade of octocorals, but is morphologically and genetically distinct from Anthomastus Verrill, 1878 and Paraminabea Williams & Alderslade, 1999, two similar but dimorphic genera of Alcyoniidae that are its sister taxa. In addition, we have re-assigned two species of Eleutherobia that have clavate to capitate growth forms, polyp sclerites arranged to form a collaret and points, and spindles in the colony interior to Alcyonium, a move that is supported by both morphological and molecular phylogenetic evidence.  相似文献

The gross morphology of soft coral surface sclerites has been studied for taxonomic purposes for over a century. In contrast, sclerites located deep in the core of colonies have not received attention. Some soft coral groups develop massive colonies, in these organisms tissue depth can limit light penetration and circulation of internal fluids affecting the physiology of coral tissues and their symbiotic algae; such conditions have the potential to create contrasting calcifying conditions. To test this idea, we analyzed the crystal structure of sclerites extracted from different colony regions in selected specimens of zooxanthellate and azooxanthellate soft corals with different colony morphologies, these were: Sarcophyton mililatensis, Sinularia capillosa, Sinularia flexibilis, Dendronephthya sp. and Ceeceenus levis. We found that the crystals that constitute polyp sclerites differ from those forming stalk sclerites. We also observed different crystals in sclerites located at various depths in the stalk including signs of sclerite breakdown in the stalk core region. These results indicate different modes of calcification within each colonial organism analyzed and illustrate the complexity of organisms usually regarded as repetitive morphological and functional units. This work aimed to show that the sea bed of two environmentally-different regions of the North Sea varies both spatially and temporally with respect to their biological communities and bioturbation characteristics. The two contrasting sites studied were north of the Dogger Bank (ND) (85 m) and the Oyster Grounds (OG) (45 m). The physical environment varied between and within sites, mainly influenced by sediment chlorophyll a content and water temperature. Our data revealed that the depth of the apparent Redox Potential Discontinuity (aRPD) layer at OG varied between 2.2 cm in February and 6.5 cm in October; evidence of bioturbation activity (e.g., feeding voids) was observed within the sediment profile. In contrast, at the ND site the aRPD values ranged from 1.7 cm in February to 2.5 cm in May and feeding voids and infaunal burrows were restricted to sediment depths far shallower than those observed at OG. Communities at ND were dominated by a number of surficial-sediment dwelling polychaete species (e.g., Notomastus latericeus, capitellids) while those of OG were dominated by the brittlestar Amphiura filiformis, together with significant numbers of deeper-dwelling taxa such as the ghost shrimp Callianassa subterranea and the bivalve mollusc Corbula gibba. Our data imply that regions of the North Sea which experience dissimilar environmental conditions not only possess different infaunal communities but also contrasting seasonal fluctuations and bioturbation capacities. The ecological implications of these findings, including inferences for carbon and nutrient cycling, are discussed in relation to the wider North Sea ecosystem.  相似文献

Increase in anthropogenic pCO2 alters seawater chemistry and could lead to reduced calcification or skeleton dissolution of calcifiers and thereby weaken coral-reef structure. Studies have suggested that the complex and diverse responses in stony coral growth and calcification, as a result of elevated pCO2, can be explained by the extent to which their soft tissues cover the underlying skeleton. This study compared the effects of decreased pH on the microstructural features of both in hospite (within the colony) and isolated sclerites (in the absence of tissue protection) of the zooxanthellate reef-dwelling octocoral Ovabunda macrospiculata. Colonies and isolated sclerites were maintained under normal (8.2) and reduced (7.6 and 7.3) pH conditions for up to 42 days. Both in hospite and isolated sclerites were then examined under SEM and ESEM microscopy in order to detect any microstructural changes. No differences were found in the microstructure of the in hospite sclerites between the control and the pH treatments. In stark contrast, the isolated sclerites revealed dissolution damage related to the acidity of the water. These findings suggest a protective role of the octocoral tissue against adverse pH conditions, thus maintaining them unharmed at high pCO2. In light of the competition for space with the less resilient reef calcifiers, octocorals may thus have a significant advantage under greater than normal acidic conditions.  相似文献

The first known fossil specimens of pipehorses (Haliichthyinae) were unearthed from the Middle Miocene (Sarmatian) beds of the Coprolitic Horizon in the Tunjice Hills, Slovenia. These fossil pipehorses belong to a new genus and species Hippohaliichthys edis, which was similar to the extant species Haliichthys taeniophorus. The body morphology indicates that the described fossil pipehorses were also closely related to the pygmy pipehorse Hippotropiscis frenki and the seahorse Hippocampus sarmaticus, two taxa which were also found in the Coprolitic Horizon. The described fossil material of pipehorses indicates that seahorses evolved from a group of pipehorses that were similar in size and shape to extant and fossil pipehorses of the Haliichthyinae subfamily.  相似文献

Chancelloriid sclerites from the lowermost Cambrian Xinji Formation (Series 2, Stage 3), southern margin of the North China platform, are systematically described. Thousands of isolated sclerites from three sections are assigned to three genera and four species, including Chancelloria cf. eros, Allonnia tripodophora, Archiasterella pentactina, and Ar. tetraspina. To accurately document the taxonomic significance of the sclerite structure, modified formulas (m+nC, m+nA, and m+0) are put forward to represent the full series and variation of sclerite forms. Based on the sclerite construction, statistical analysis on the proportions of different sclerite forms in the rock samples and the composition of sclerites in previously described chancelloriid scleritomes, a new scheme for identification and classification of isolated sclerites reconciled within the framework of the complete scleritome, is proposed.  相似文献

Two collections of clupeid fishes, which have previously been assigned to the species Sardinella sardinites (Heckel, 1850), from the Lower and Middle Sarmatian of the Pshekha River Basin (Western Ciscaucasia, Krasnodar Region) were studied. A new genus, Illusionella gen. nov., with two species, I. tsurevica sp. nov. and I. pshekhensis sp. nov., was described based on morphological characteristics. They are the most abundant species in Sarmatian fish assemblages of the Psekups-Belaya interfluve.  相似文献

The glass sponge Monorhaphis chuni (Porifera: Hexactinellida) forms the largest bio-silica structures on Earth; their giant basal spicules reach sizes of up to 3 m and diameters of 8.5 mm. Previously, it had been shown that the thickness growth proceeds by appositional layering of individual lamellae; however, the mechanism for the longitudinal growth remained unstudied. Now we show, that the surface of the spicules have towards the tip serrated relief structures that are consistent in size and form with the protrusions on the surface of the spicules. These protrusions fit into the collagen net that surrounds the spicules. The widths of the individual lamellae do not show a pronounced size tendency. The apical elongation of the spicule proceeds by piling up cone-like structural units formed from silica. As a support of the assumption that in the extracellular space silicatein(-like) molecules exist that associate with the external surface of the respective spicule immunogold electron microscopic analyses were performed. With the primmorph system from Suberites domuncula we show that silicatein(-like) molecules assemble as string- and net-like arrangements around the spicules. At their tips the silicatein(-like) molecules are initially stacked and at a later stay also organized into net-like structures. Silicatein(-like) molecules have been extracted from the giant basal spicule of Monorhaphis. Applying the SDS–PAGE technique it could be shown that silicatein molecules associate to dimers and trimers. Higher complexes (filaments) are formed from silicatein(-like) molecules, as can be visualized by electron microscopy (SEM). In the presence of ortho-silicate these filaments become covered with 30–60 nm long small rod-like/cuboid particles of silica. From these data we conclude that the apical elongation of the spicules of Monorhaphis proceeds by piling up cone-like silica structural units, whose synthesis is mediated by silicatein(-like) molecules.  相似文献

Abstract:  Specimens of Favosites from upper Llandovery strata of Anticosti Island show three types of calcite structures, herein interpreted as spicules, preserved within their calices and on top of the last tabula. This is stratigraphically younger material, some 50 m higher than fossils described two decades earlier, in which calcified polyps, each with 12 retracted tentacles, were noted. These more recently found structures show striking similarities in form and position to point, collaret and capstan spicules found in the soft tissues of modern pipe corals, i.e. the Octocorallia (Alcyonacea). Where preserved in a distinct pattern on top of the calcite tabulae, the spicular sclerites in Favosites occur in a particular sequence. Twelve individual, or sometimes six pairs of, triradiate point spicules have shrunk to a circlet near the middle of the calice (resting on the last, outermost, tabula). Surrounding the point spicules are 3–6 circlets of curved, usually perforated, lenticular collaret spicules; and surrounding these are scattered, much smaller, capstan spicules. The spicules display variability, probably ontogenetic, in their form and relative sizes; and they are more similar in form to calcareous spicules of alcyonacean corals than to those known from calcareous sponges. Structures with 12-fold radial symmetry in Heliolites, originally described by one of us as 'septal florets', consist of elements that are considered comparable with the point spicules found in Favosites . They have been recognized in ten species of Heliolites from Silurian (Wenlock–Ludlow) strata in the Canadian Arctic islands.  相似文献

Wiwaxia corrugata and the indisputable polychaetes of the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale, particularly Canadia spinosa, have figured prominently in recent hypotheses about the early evolution of polychaete annelids. Based on similarities between the sclerites of Wiwaxia and the notochaetae of Canadia with the broad notochaetae (paleae) of Recent chrysopetalid polychaetes, these two fossil taxa have been variously treated as closely related to the most highly derived stem forms of the polychaete (and annelid) crown group or as members of a specific, Recent subgroup within Polychaeta, the order Phyllodocida. Chrysopetalidae is a member of Phyllodocida, which is part of the major polychaete clade Aciculata; the latter two taxa are distinguished by four and six well defined autapomorphic characters, respectively. The best preserved or otherwise appropriate fossils of Wiwaxia corrugata, Canadia spinosa and the other polychaetes of the Burgess Shale have been studied in detail in order to determine whether they possess any characters that could support the homology of wiwaxiid sclerites, canadiid notochaetae and chrysopetalid paleae. Most of these fossil taxa have significant autapomorphies but the specific characters of the Aciculata and Phyllodocida are entirely absent. It is demonstrated that constraining cladograms in such a manner that wiwaxiid sclerites, canadiid notochaetae and chrysopetalid paleae are homologous leads to results that are markedly unparsimonious. Furthermore, Canadia and the other polychaetes of the Burgess Shale cannot be referred to any extant subgroup within the Polychaeta and cannot be used to polarize character evolution within the annelid crown group. Apart from its dubious sclerites, Wiwaxia has no characters that could indicate any close relationship with Polychaeta or Annelida.  相似文献

AGL6-like genes form one of the major subfamilies of MADS-box genes and are closely related to the AGL2 (Eclass) and SQUA (A-class) subfamilies. In Arabidopsis, AGL6 and AGL13 have been reported from the AGL6 subfamily, and AGL6 controls lateral organ development and flowering time. However, little is known about homologs of these genes in basal angiosperms. We identified new AGL6-like genes from several taxa from gymnosperms, basal angiosperms, monocots, and eudicots. These genes were analyzed together with previously reported AGL6-like genes. Structural analyses showed 1) a one-aa (amino acid) gap in the I-domain in all AGL6-like genes relative to AGL2-like and SQUA-like genes, 2) a seven-aa insertion in the C-domain of genes from asterids, and 3) a one-aa insertion in the C-domain of genes from gymnosperms. Broad phylogenetic analyses strongly showed that AGL6-like genes are sister to AGL2-like genes, and SQUA-like genes are sister to these two groups. The phylogenetic tree of AGL6-like genes generally tracks organismal phylogeny as inferred from multigene data sets; several gene duplications were detected in angiosperms (e.g., within Magnoliales), and one duplication was detected in gymnosperms. We hypothesize that the split between AGL6-like and AGL2-like genes occurred at least 290–309.2 mya based on our phylogenetic tree and the fossil record.  相似文献

The current discussion about the relationships of higher arthropod taxa has led to a conflict between the traditional Tracheata (=Atelocerata) concept (hexapods united with myriapods), the Tetraconata concept (hexapods united with crustaceans, excluding myriapods), and the Paradoxopoda or Myriochelata concept (myriapods united with cheliceratans), with major contradictions between morphological and molecular data. We have analyzed a character set which apparently has completely vanished from the recent debate, namely the equipment of the trunk pleura of myriapods and insects with a characteristic set of concentric sclerites around the leg base and accompanying muscles. Based on the work of Heymons (1899) these sclerites were thought to be remains of the first appendage article, then denominated “subcoxa”. We have re-visited this old idea and show the arrangement of the much discussed pleural structures by SEM for the first time. Obviously a characteristic pattern of concentric pleural plates around the leg-base is present in all major myriapod taxa, including for the first time evidence for their presence in Progoneata. Because of their equal structure and orientation, the pleural sclerites present in entognathous and ectognathous insects may be derived from the same ground pattern. We conclude that the pleurites of Hexapoda and Myriapoda seem to be homologous structures, and there is evidence that the “subcoxa” of Tracheata is homologous with the coxa of crustaceans. Since no other arthropods show these sclerites, the transformation of the crustacean coxa to the pleural region in myriapods and insects is probably a synapomorphy congruent with the traditional Tracheata-hypothesis. Further investigations of recently published molecular work using the phylogenetic network software SplitsTree V.4 indicate that information content of several data sets is not convincing.  相似文献

The diversity, ecology and biogeography of diatoms in lakes, seepage areas and streams on the Ulu Peninsula, a large ice-free area in the northern part of James Ross Island (Weddell Sea), were studied. A diverse diatom flora of 123 taxa was observed, dominated by several Nitzschia taxa, Psammothidium papilio, Eolimna jamesrossensis, Fragilaria capucina and Fistulifera saprophila. The results from the similarity and diversity analysis suggest James Ross Island to be biogeographically positioned within the Maritime Antarctic region, yet with some affinities with the flora of Continental Antarctica, as shown by the presence of Luticola gaussii and Achnanthes taylorensis. Based on our data, James Ross Island can thus be located close to the boundary of the two main Antarctic biogeographical regions. Diatom communities present in streams and seepage areas could be clearly distinguished from those in lakes, the latter being much more species rich. Based on the multivariate analysis, conductivity and nutrients were selected as the two main environmental factors determining the diatom composition in the Ulu Peninsula lakes. The revised taxonomy of the Antarctic diatom flora induced the construction of a transfer function for water conductivity in the studied lakes that can be applied in further palaeoecological studies.  相似文献

A revision of previously known material and analysis of new records of Miocene baleen whales from the Sarmatian of Adygea (city of Maikop, Blinovo Formation) resulted in the establishment of a new genus, Kurdalagonus with three species: K. mchedlidzei sp. nov. (Middle Sarmatian, Nagiezh-Uashkh locality), K. adygeicus sp. nov. (Upper Sarmatian, Hydroelectric power station locality), and K. maicopicus (Spasskii, 1951) (=Cetotherium maicopicum Spasskii, 1951; Middle Sarmatian, Hydroelectric power station locality).  相似文献
