Because of its large size, the African great cane rat (Thryonomys swinderianus) is valued for food and has become a popular meat in western Africa. A survey was conducted to determine the occurrence of salmonellae in cane rats. Ten strains of Salmonella sp. were isolated from eight of 25 (32%) cane rats. Salmonella ajiobo was isolated from the spleen and intestines of three cane rats; S. agama was obtained from the spleen, liver and intestines of three animals; and S. poona was isolated from the spleen and liver of two cane rats. The occurrence of salmonellae in T. swinderianus is a potential public health hazard. Humans may become exposed to infection by consumption of inadequately cooked infected cane rat meat, or by eating vegetables, sugar cane and fruits contaminated with excretions of carrier cane rats. Incidents of human salmonellosis attributable to cane rat meat have not yet been reported; however, all three serotypes isolated from the cane rats have also been isolated from stools of patients suffering from gastroenteritis in Nigeria. 相似文献

The morphogenesis of the foetal membranes of the African cane rat (Thryonomys swinderianus, Temminck) was studied and compared with that of the caviomorphs from South America. Like the guinea pig and chinchilla, implantation in the cane rat is interstitial, amniogenesis is by cavitation, there is very early and complete inversion of yolk sac endoderm, there is a well-developed subplacenta which persists throughout gestation, and the interhaemal membrane is haemomonochorial in nature. The phylogenetic significance of these findings are discussed in the light of long geographical and temporal separation between the continents. 相似文献

The complete mitochondrial genome of an African cane rat, Thryonomys swinderianus (Rodentia, Hystricognathi), was included in a phylogenetic analysis along with 4 rodents, 14 additional eutherians, and 3 noneutherian outgroups. Monophyly of the suborder Hystricognathi, represented by the cane rat and the South American guinea pig, Cavia porcellus, was strongly supported by maximum-parsimony, neighbor-joining, and maximum-likelihood methods. The molecular-based estimate of the divergence time of Old and New World Hystricognathi (approximately 85 million years before present, MYBP) is consistent with an hypothesis of vicariance divergence due to the rifting of the African and South American continents 86-100 MYBP. Monophyly of Rodentia or the superordinal clade Glires (Rodentia and Lagomorpha) were not supported. 相似文献

The effects of feeding increasing levels of expeller-pressed (EP) canola meal in substitution for soybean meal as an energy and amino acid source were evaluated in 240 weaned pigs with an initial body weight of 7.3 ± 0.6 kg. Five pelleted wheat-based diets containing 0, 50, 100, 150 or 200 g EP canola meal/kg were formulated to contain 10.0 MJ net energy (NE)/kg and 1.18 g standardised ileal digestible (SID) lysine/MJ NE and were fed for 4 wk starting 1 wk after weaning at 19 days of age. Expeller-pressed canola meal was added at the expense of soybean meal and the diets were balanced for NE using canola oil and for amino acids using crystalline lysine, methionine, threonine and tryptophan. Increasing inclusion of EP canola meal linearly reduced (P<0.001) the apparent total tract digestibility of energy, dry matter and crude protein and the digestible energy content of diets. From 0 to 28 days on trial, increasing inclusion of EP canola meal did not affect body weight gain, feed intake and feed efficiency. In conclusion, up to 200 g EP canola meal/kg can replace soybean meal in diets formulated to equal NE and SID amino acid content and fed to nursery pigs starting 1 wk after weaning without reducing growth performance. 相似文献

Laboratory studies compared the growth rate of Stenonema vicarium (Walker) nymphs on diets of detritus and natural stream periphyton. In three consecutive runs of the experiment, growth rates
were consistently higher on periphyton (mean growth rate = 2.1% wet wt. d−1) than detritus (mean = 1.8% wet wt. d−1). The starting date of each run also significantly influenced growth rates. In each treatment growth rates generally decreased
over the course of the 3 runs, and ca. one-half of the nymphs in the last run did not molt or grow. It appeared that growth

The effects of fibre in a pelleted diet on food intake, digestibility of crude fibre, dry matter and energy, on passage time and consistency of faeces were studied in 2 species of Callithricidae, Callithrix jacchus and Saguinus fuscicollis. Coarse cellulose, microcellulose, wheat bran and shrimp meal (chitin = crude fibre) were tested in diets containing 2,4 and 6% total crude fibre, respectively. Digestibility and passage time were determined by inclusion of 0.5% Cr2O3 in the diet. Both celluloses had little influence on the digestibility of energy and dry matter. Digestibility of crude fibre was very low. Wheat bran led to evident depression of energy and dry matter digestibility. High digestibility of crude fibre occurred at the higher levels of inclusion in the diet. Shrimp meal was highly digested with little influence on digestibility of energy and dry matter, indicating considerable degradation of chitin. Wheat bran showed a marked effect, while microcellulose had no effect on passage time, consistency and volume of faeces. 相似文献

ATP citrate lyase, acetyl-CoA synthetase, malic enzyme and hexose monophosphate dehydrogenase activities and rates of synthesis of long chain fatty acids from labeled acetate and citrate were measured in cell-free fractions of liver from rats fed various diets, with and without D- or L- thyroxine. Diets containign sucrose (vs. isocaloric glucose) or lard (vs. isocaloric corn oil) stimulated hepatic lipogenesis both in control and in thyroxine-treated rats. The lipogenic response to thyroxine was greatly modified by diet, except for an invariable rise in malic enzyme activity. With diets providing less than 6% of calories as linoleic acid, thyroxine increased fatty acid synthesis, depleted liver glycogen and retarded growth; when linoleic acid was increased to 16% of calories, thyroxine had no effect on fatty acid synthesis or growth and liver glycogen depletion was significantly attenuated. This response to dietary linoleic acid suggests that these phenomena may be largely secondary to the increased requirement for essential fatty acid in thyrotoxicosis. Further study should reveal the extent to which observed effects of excess thyroid hormone are amenable to control by dietary polyunsaturated fat. 相似文献

Ten (100%) lesser savanna cane rats, Thryonomys gregorianus, collected from the Lake Kivv area of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa were found to be infected with an undescribed anoplocephalid tapeworm, Thysanotaenia congolensis n. sp. Like other species of Thysanotaenia, T. congolensis n. sp. has the ovary and vitellarium centrally located, and the egg capsules and testes are intervascular. The new species differs from the 2 existing species, Thysanotaenia lemuris in lemurs and Thysanotaenia cubensis in humans, in being smaller (34-50 mm long) and in having a smaller scolex (260-410 microns in diameter), a shorter cirrus sac (115 microns long), and smaller eggs (40 microns in diameter). Sprague-Dawley-Rolfsmeyer rats were hypophysectomized on days 11, 12 or 15 of pregnancy and sacrificed on day 20 to determine the extent of mammary development, as assessed by determination of nucleic acid content. The DNA of six abdominal-inguinal glands in the hypophysectomized groups was not significantly different from that in the sham-operated pregnant or intact pregnant control groups. All groups maintaining pregnancy had significantly higher DNA contents in mammary glands than virgin control or hypophysectomized aborted groups. In order to determine the minimal numbers of placental-fetal units required to maintain pregnancy and mammary gland growth, fetuses and placentas were removed on day 12 of pregnancy in addition to the pituitary so that only one fetus and one placenta remained in the uterus of a group of 6 rats with other groups having 2, 3, 4, 5 remaining. Pregnancy was maintained with only one placental-fetal unit, but mammary gland proliferation was significantly lower than the control group on day 20 of pregnancy. Three to five conceptuses supported mammary proliferation during the latter half of pregnancy at a level not significantly different from intact or sham-operated control groups. Removal of placental units on day 12 in rats having pituitaries intact resulted in no mammary DNA change when 1-5 units remained. Removal of pitutaries on day 12 and placental-fetal units on day 14 also resulted in no change in mammary DNA with as little as two placentas (minus all fetuses),while only one placenta remaining resulted in a significantly lower mammary DNA than in groups wtih 2 or more placentas. 相似文献
