Zinc nutritional status in obese children and adolescents   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Studies in animals and humans have corroborated that zinc (Zn) metabolism is altered in obesity. The present work intends to evaluate the Zn nutritional status in obese children and adolescents by the determination of some biochemical parameters and analyses of the diets. The investigation was carried out in a group of obese children and adolescents (n=23) and compared to a control group (n=21), both between 7 and 14 yr of age. A software analyzed diet information from 3-d food records. Body composition was evaluated by body mass index, bioelectrical impedance, and skinfold measurements. Zinc nutritional status was evaluated by Zn determination in plasma, erythrocyte, and 24-h urine, by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (γ=213.9 nm). Diets consumed by both groups had marginal concentrations of zinc. Zinc concentrations in plasma and erythrocytes were significantly lower in the obese group. Urinary zinc excretion was significantly higher in the same group. The results allowed one to conclude that zinc nutritional status in obese individuals is altered.  相似文献

Objectives: To suggest methods for maintaining an adequate nutritional status for elderly patients with dementia by evaluating the relationships between oral status, physical and mental health, and feeding conditions. Background: Feeding difficulties in dementia patients are related to food intake, and failure to eat may be associated with weight loss in long‐term care facilities. The relationship between compromised oral function and diet is still unclear. Materials and methods: A cross‐sectional study of 94 elderly women with dementia (mean age 89.6 ± 5.6 years) from a nursing home was undertaken to investigate their oral, physical and mental and nutritional status. Results: There were significant differences in serum albumin (p = 0.0284), N‐ADL (p = 0.0005), NM scale (p = 0.0004) and HDS‐R (p = 0.0004) between denture wearers and non‐denture wearers. However, there were no significant differences in body mass index between denture wearers and non‐denture wearers. Conclusion: A suitable type of diet and assistance with feeding could maintain the nutritional status of elderly patients with dementia if they are still feeding themselves. The nutritional support team will benefit from the participation of a dentist.  相似文献

Insulin was measured by radioimmunoassay (Linco Res). Diets consumed by both groups had marginal concentrations of zinc. Zinc concentrations in plasma and erythrocytes were significantly lower in the obese group. Urinary zinc excretion and serum insulin were significantly higher in the same group, although the insulinemia and the parameters of zinc nutritional status were not significantly correlated. As a result, considering that zinc is part of the synthesis and secretion of this hormone, an assessment is necessary of the possible participation of the oligoelement in the mechanisms of insulin resistance, commonly present in obese patients.  相似文献

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between the oral health condition, the nutrient intake and the body mass index (BMI) in elderly people. Background: Impaired dentition has been associated with an inadequate consumption of key nutrients and with changes in nutritional status in elderly people. Materials and methods: The sample comprised 887 elderly people, aged 60 and over, of whom 816 underwent a clinical oral examination and were allocated into groups according to the numbers of teeth and number of posterior occluding pairs of natural teeth. Nutritional status was determined using the BMI. Dietary intake was assessed by a 24‐h diet recall interview and the data from these records were converted to nutritional intake using Diet Pro software. Differences between means were evaluated using anova , together with the Tukey test or Dunnet test, according to the normality of the data. Associations between categorical variables were tested using chi‐square analysis. Results: Ages ranged from 60 to 96 years (mean, 71.46 years), with 47% of the respondents in the 60‐to 69‐year‐old group. A high DMFT index (mean, 27.81) was observed with the missing component accounting for 88.8% of the index. Significant differences were observed between the mean intake of nutrients and the number of posterior occluding pairs of natural teeth (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found between the number of teeth and BMI. Conclusion: Nutrient intake is associated with the oral health status as defined by clinical measures.  相似文献

Cells maintain an osmotic pressure essential for growth and division, using organic compatible solutes and inorganic ions. Mg2+, which is the most abundant divalent cation in living cells, has not been considered an osmotically important solute. Here we show that under carbon limitation or dormancy native marine bacterial communities have a high cellular concentration of Mg2+ (370–940 m) and a low cellular concentration of Na+ (50–170 m). With input of organic carbon, the average cellular concentration of Mg2+ decreased 6–12-fold, whereas that of Na+ increased ca 3–4-fold. The concentration of chlorine, which was in the range of 330–1200 m and was the only inorganic counterion of quantitative significance, balanced and followed changes in the concentration of Mg2++Na+. In an osmotically stable environment, like seawater, any major shift in bacterial osmolyte composition should be related to shifts in growth conditions, and replacing organic compatible solutes with inorganic solutes is presumably a favorable strategy when growing in carbon-limited condition. A high concentration of Mg2+ in cells may also serve to protect and stabilize macromolecules during periods of non-growth and dormancy. Our results suggest that Mg2+ has a major role as osmolyte in marine bacteria, and that the [Mg2+]/[Na+] ratio is related to its physiological condition and nutritional status. Bacterial degradation is a main sink for dissolved organic carbon in the ocean, and understanding the mechanisms limiting bacterial activity is therefore essential for understanding the oceanic C-cycle. The [Mg2+]/[Na+]-ratio in cells may provide a physiological proxy for the transitions between C-limited and mineral nutrient-limited bacterial growth in the ocean''s surface layer.  相似文献

Root colonization and induction of an iron stress regulated promoter for siderophore production by Pseudomonas fluorescens 2-79RLI was studied in vitro and in the rhizosphere of different plant species. P. fluorescens 2-79RLI was previously genetically modified with an iron regulated ice nucleation reporter, which allowed calibration of ice nucleation activity with siderophore production. Initial experiments examined ice nucleation activity and siderophore production under different growth conditions in vitro. These studies demonstrated that P. fluorescens 2-79RLI could utilize both Fe-citrate and Fe-phytosiderophore as iron sources, suggesting that production of these compounds by plants would increase iron availability for P. fluorescens 2-79RLI in the rhizosphere. Fe demand and Fe stress were further shown to be a function of nutrient availability and were reduced when carbon was limiting for growth. Subsequent experiments extended these observations to rhizosphere cells. Cells were sampled from the rhizosphere and the rhizoplane. Results of a soil microcosm experiment showed that Fe stress was reduced for P. fluorescens 2-79RLI in the barley rhizosphere as compared to the cells in the rhizosphere.of lupin. In lupin, relative Fe stress of P. fluorescens 2-79RLI was greater at the root tip than in the lateral root zone. In a second experiment comparing zucchini and bean, iron stress was greater for P. fluorescens 2-79RLI associated with zucchini than with bean. In a third experiment with rape plants under P deficient conditions, addition of soluble P was shown to increase Fe stress for P. fluorescens 2-79RLI located at the root tip, but not in the lateral root zone. This study showed that Fe stress of P. fluorescens 2-79RLI in the rhizosphere may be influenced by plant species, P source, root zone and localization of the cells within the rhizosphere.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of summer and winter seasons on antioxidant status, body reserve mobilization and biomarkers of stress in Hariana and Sahiwal cows. Twelve lactating cows (six of each Hariana and Sahiwal cows) were included in summer (May to July) and winter season (November to January) study. Microclimatic observations were recorded on daily basis during the experimental period. In both seasons, blood samples were collected at fortnightly intervals for analysis of total antioxidant activity, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), β-Hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA), heat shock protein 70 and 90 (HSP70 and HSP90). Antioxidant activity reduced significantly (p < 0.05) in Hariana cattle during summers as compared to winters; whereas, seasonal variation exerts no effect on antioxidant activity in Sahiwal. Blood NEFA concentration was similar among both the breeds over both the seasons but reduced significantly (p < 0.05) during summer season as compared to winters in both the breeds. BHBA concentration was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in Hariana cows than Sahiwal cows during winters, however, no effect on BHBA level was observed during summer season in both the breeds. Significantly, lower plasma cortisol level (p < 0.05) was found during winter season in Sahiwal as well as Hariana cows. Further, Sahiwal exhibited lower plasma cortisol as compared to Hariana in both the seasons. HSP 70 and 90 showed non-significant differences between breeds within both the seasons. However, significantly, lower plasma HSP 70 levels (p < 0.05) were reported during winter season in Sahiwal as well as in Hariana cows. Results of present study revealed that indigenous Sahiwal is more heat tolerant as compared to Hariana breed.  相似文献

为了准确地评价水生态系统营养状态和综合决策,通过最大熵原理耦合模糊性与随机性,建立了最大熵模糊评价模型(FAME);利用逼近理想解排序法(TOPSIS),以待决策水体样本的实测值为理想解,以评价结果中与实测值相差最大的为负理想解,建立了多判据决策模型(MCDM).经12个湖泊实测数据验证,最大熵模糊评价与随机评价、模糊评价和灰色评价的结果较为一致,但提高了评价水体营养状态问题各层次的分辨力.多判据决策模型可解决多种方法评价结果不相容问题,使评价结果更接近水体实际情况.FAME和MCDM适用于各种水质的综合评价及决策.  相似文献

Background: In developing countries, both the prevalence of malnutrition and oral disease are high among older individuals. Materials and methods: Four hundred and eighty subjects aged 60 years and above were selected to be included in the sample, of which 437 responded giving an overall response rate of 91%. Data were collected by means of an interviewer administered questionnaire, an oral examination and a physical examination to determine height and weight to calculate the body mass index (BMI). Results: Based on the WHO cut‐offs for BMI, 62, 20 and 18% of the sample were normal, under‐ and over‐weight, respectively. A multinomial logistic regression analysis with normal weight as the reference category revealed that missing teeth and denture status were associated with being underweight but not with being overweight. Conclusion: In older individuals, tooth loss is significantly associated with being underweight.  相似文献

Objective: To determine secular trends in overweight/obesity among 7‐ to 15‐year‐olds for the periods 1985, 1997, and 2004. Research Method and Procedures: Data from representative surveys conducted in New South Wales, Australia, in 1985, 1997, and 2004 were analyzed. Height and weight were measured, and BMI categories were created using International Obesity Task Force definitions. Students were grouped as Grades 2 + 4 + 6 and 8 + 10. Results: The prevalences of overweight/obesity for 1985, 1997, and 2004 were 10.9%, 20.6%, and 25.7% among the younger boys and 10.6%, 19.5%, and 26.1% among the older boys. The average annual rate of increase for 1985 to 1997 was 0.81% and for 1997 to 2004 was 0.73% among the younger boys and was 0.74% and 0.94% for the two periods among the older boys. The prevalences of overweight/obesity in 1985, 1997, and 2004 were 14.0%, 22.0%, and 24.8% among the younger girls and 8.3%, 17.9%, and 19.8% among the older girls, respectively. The average annual rates of increase for the two periods were 0.8% and 0.4% among the younger girls and 0.80% and 0.27% among the older girls. Change in the prevalence of overweight/obesity and socioeconomic status were not associated. Discussion: Over the period 1985 to 1997, the prevalence of overweight and obesity increased significantly among the younger and older boys and the younger girls. The prevalence of overweight, but not obesity, increased among the older girls over this period. Over the period 1997 to 2004, the prevalence of overweight/obesity combined increased significantly among boys of both age groups but not among girls.  相似文献

Objectives: To evaluate the association between nutritional status, resting energy expenditure (REE), and protein oxidative stress in patients after kidney transplantation (KT).

Methodology: The study evaluated 35 patients transplanted at the time of hospital discharge and 3 months after regarding: body composition, REE (by indirect calorimetry), and injury factor (IF); serum urea, creatinine, glucose, albumin, total protein, advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), vitamin C.

Results: Three months after discharge, there was an improvement in renal function, nutritional status, and oxidative stress, with a standardization in the REE/kg. There was an increase in body weight, mainly in fat mass. The correlations showed that a greater cold ischemia time resulted in a deeper decline in vitamin C; a longer hospital length stay resulted in a greater reduction in AOPP; the higher preoperative body weight showed greater increases in body fat and glucose after transplantation. For decreases in REE and IF, there were increases in total protein. Finally, at hospital discharge there was a greater gain in weight, lower albumin, and total protein among individuals who had rejection episodes.

Discussion: The KT improves many of metabolic abnormalities, with the improvement of nutritional status, oxidative stress, and normalization of REE.  相似文献

Studies on the effect of N, P and/or K fertilisers applied to Giza 2 corn, on behaviour of Heterodera zeae revealed that the nematode population greatly varied according to the fertiliser type and level. When N, P or K were used separately, the fertilised plants sustained the lowest nematode final population and the rate of build-up as compared with those of the control plants; however, the recommended levels of these fertilisers caused the lower values amongst the applied fertilisers levels and achieved an higher increase in the plant growth parameters. As for, the N, P and K used in different combinations, a similar trend was noticed when the recommended levels of the fertilisers were applied to plants. It is worthy to notice that when phosphorus was decreased or nitrogen increased each in combination with the other elements at their recommended levels, the nematode reproduced well and folded several times.  相似文献

Water content of Atlantic salmon parr fell from about 84% at emergence (late May) to just under 79% in September but rose again towards March. Na+ content consequently rose from 3·3 mg g−1 dry wt at the beginning of June to 6·2 mg g−1 in early July. It then fell to 4·4 mg g−1 in September, rising again towards March. K+ content rose to a maximum in July to stabilize at 16·6 mg g−1 dry wt in September. The resultant Na+/K+ ratio peaked at 0·43: 1 in mid-June, falling to a minimum in mid-August but rising again in March reflecting changes in the relative proportions of intra and extracellular water. The changes in whole-body chemistry suggest a period of nutritional stress immediately after emergence and during the winter. In streams at higher altitude and of lower nutrient status, nutritional stress during the winter appears to be more severe.  相似文献

The Turkana, like other East African pastoral groups, are known for their tall adult stature, achieved despite a blunted growth spurt during adolescence and continued growth into the early 20s. To investigate the hormonal mechanisms associated with the pattern of slow and continued adolescent growth, we collected data on hormonal status, height, weight, and trunk skinfolds and ethnographic self-reports of testicular maturation in a cross-sectional sample of 35 nomadic and 37 settled Turkana males aged 14-24. Hormonal determinations included testosterone (T), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in blood, in addition to urinary DHEA. Self-reports of testicular maturation showed no difference between settled and nomadic subpopulations. However, nomadic boys exhibited significantly higher levels of T, DHEA, and SHBG. Of all the hormones, only SHBG showed a significant relationship with age. Multiple regression models show blood T and SHBG to be significant independent predictors of achieved height as well as weight, controlling for age. Our results suggest that onset of puberty is substantially delayed among Turkana males, and that bioavailable T is related to growth in stature during adolescence. We suggest that SHBG acts to mediate the effects of energy availability on adolescent growth in this energetically limited population. Our findings may also have implications for understanding adolescent growth among Homo erectus.  相似文献

Objectives: To study differences in nutritional, dental status and oral function between institutionalised patients with Alzheimer's disease and cognitively healthy elderly people living in the community. Design: Comparison was made between two groups, Alzheimer's disease sufferers and healthy controls, using established criteria for anthropometric, mental and dental state. Setting: An institution and residential area in Stockholm, Sweden. Subjects: Forty patients with Alzheimer's disease living in a nursing home and 40 age-and gender-matched control subjects living independently. Intervention: Dental status and anthropometric variables. Results: Overnutrition was less frequent among the demented than the controls and more demented were undernourished. Dental status was similar in the two groups with few edentulous subjects but only 2 of 7 edentulous subjects with Alzheimer's disease wore dentures. Having natural teeth and many functional oral zones is important for food consistency choice, but not for nutritional status. In the Alzheimer group, the stage of dementia has a strong association to the ability to eat unaided and an association with dental status. Conclusion: There are differences in nutritional status between Alzheimer's patients in institutions and cognitively healthy elderly living at home. The choice of food consistency is correlated to dental status but nutritional status is not shown to be influenced by dental status. However, the ability to eat unaided is strongly correlated to cognitive status.  相似文献

More than 800 000 reared juvenile turbot Psetta maxima were released in Danish waters during the period 1990 to 2002, as part of a stock enhancement programme. Performance of the released fish has been investigated using a combination of surveys and experimental studies. A total of 1278 wild fish and 439 alizarine marked released fish were caught in 16 surveys from 1993 to 1997. Recaptures were made over a period of c . 2 years after release. Results of growth analysis and measurements of nutritional status (condition factor, liver index, liver dry matter and otolith residual mass) showed only minor differences between wild and released fish. Growth rates of wild and of released fish were comparable to fish kept in the laboratory at the same temperature (specific length growth rate c . 0·5% day−1 at 75–185 mm total length and 12·5° C). The results indicated sufficient food in the release area, but significant differences in growth and in nutritional status, between  years, were also observed. Nutritional status of both wild and released fish was comparable to fed fish in the experiments and significantly higher than in fish starved for  > 1 week. The effects of the transport and release procedures used were examined by simulated releases in laboratory tanks. The fish were observed to be feeding and growing normally during the first week after simulated release, suggesting this species to be relatively robust and unaffected by the handling and release procedures.  相似文献

通过不同饥饿处理 ,研究了东方田鼠在不同营养状态下 ,对陌生食物尝试和选择的行为模式。结果表明 ,初次遇到陌生食物时 ,各处理组对陌生食物的采食量分别为饱食 6.9± 1 .8g,饥饿组为 4.8± 1 .6g,饥饿 食物短缺组为 3.4± 1 .4g。各处理组动物对陌生食物的摄入量间差异极为显著 ( P=0 .0 0 4 3)。饱食组、饥饿组及饥饿 食物短缺组动物初次遇到陌生食物时 ,所摄入的陌生食物量占总摄入量的百分比分别为72 %、38%与 1 2 %。说明 ,在实验室条件下饱食动物较饥饿和饥饿 食物短缺的动物学习选择摄食陌生食物的倾向较强。  相似文献

The resource‐use patterns and nutritional status of sable antelope herds were investigated in the Okavango Delta region of northern Botswana for comparison with those documented for declining sable antelope populations elsewhere in southern Africa. GPS collars recorded the relative use of floodplain, upland and wooded grassland habitats by the sable herds while VHF beacons facilitated locating the herds for direct observations on feeding. Surprisingly, the sable herds made greatest use of upland grasslands, rather than the floodplain grasslands exposed after floodwater had receded, during the dry season months. In the upland grasslands, they exploited tall, fibrous grass species that retained quite high levels of greenness through the dry season. This ability, together with partial use of the floodplain and some browsing on new leaves and flowers, helped maintain dietary nitrogen and phosphorus levels, as indicated by faecal nutrient levels, above maintenance thresholds through the dry season. Hence, the sable herds in the study region did not seem to be limited nutritionally under the rainfall and flooding conditions prevailing during the study.  相似文献
