Lysogeny has been first established in strains of parahemolytic vibrios of serovar O4:K12. Moderate phages belonged to morphological group IV by home A. S. Tikhonenko's classification and were presented by one serological type. No correlation has been revealed between sensitivity to moderate phages of parahemolytic vibrios and specificity of "O"- or "K"-serotypes.  相似文献

A comparative study was made of two sets of Mukerjee and Drozhevkina-Arutyunova's bacteriophages in typing 514 strains of the El Tor vibrios and 45 strains of clasic biotype. It was shown that the Mukerjee or Drozhevkina-Arutyunova's phages could be used for the typing of cholera vibrios. The phages of the latter set prove to detect more phage types (18 against 11); they determine both the phage type and the biotype at the same time. The typing of cholera vibrios of both biotypes is possible, and the percentage of nontyping strains left is comparatively low (5.2 against 23.5 after Mukerjee). A table of the phage correspondence was made; it permits to obtain comparable data in using any set of the typing phages.  相似文献

Galophilic vibrios were for the first time in the Soviet Union isolated from the patients with gastrointestinal diseases in Novorossiisk during the summer-autumn period of 1973. The greatest number of strains of the parahemolytic vibrios was isolated in August and September, during intensive fishing season, from the patients in whom the disease usually developed 6 to 12 hours after eating the sea fish. The parahemolytic vibrios isolated from the patients were typical by all signs and produced a marked hemolysis on the Wagatsuma medium. The halophilic vibrios are inhabitants of the Black Sea. During the years of 1972-1973 there were isolated 109 strains of V. paraheamolyticus and 133 strains of V. alginolyticus from the sea water and various hydrobionts.  相似文献

Twenty bacteriophages active against Vibrio parahaemolyticus and agar-digesting vibrios, isolated from oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and Dungeness crab (Cancer magister) and by induction of a lysogenic agar digester, were tested as to their host range. These phages were specific for V. parahaemolyticus and various agar-digesting vibrios, and interspecies lysis occurred only between these two groups. V. alginolyticus, V. anguillarum and related species, V. cholerae, and a group of marine psychrophilic and psychrotrophic vibrios were not affected. No correlation was observed between the O and K serotypes of V. parahaemolyticus strains and bacteriophage susceptibility patterns, and 7 of 28 strains of V. parahaemolyticus were not lysed by any of the phages. Only two of the phage isolates were capable of lysing all susceptible V. parahaemolyticus strains. No correlation was observed between the inter-and intraspecies genetic relatedness (DNA homologies) of V. parahaemolyticus and agar-digesting vibrios and susceptibility patterns to different bacteriophages. Some of the phages were capable of plaque formation on V. parahaemolyticus as well as on some strains of agar-digesting vibrios that were separated by 70 to 80% differences in their DNA homologies. The possible ecological significance of these vibrio bacteriophages, particularly those having a wide host range, is discussed.  相似文献

The Classical Vibrio cholerae strain NIH 41 contains two temperate bacteriophages, designated VcA-1 and VcA-2, that are distinguished by immunity, plaque morphology, induction kinetics, and particle morphology. Both phage are serologically related to phage Kappa. However, only phage VcA-2 has the Kappa type host range and immunity. The induction kinetics and immunity patterns of Classical vibrios suggest that these strains may contain defective phage related to the phages isolated from NIH 41. Classical strain 569B releases phage-tail structures upon induction that are morphologically and serologically related to both phages VcA-1 and VcA-2. The possible reason for the defectiveness of these phages in 569B is discussed. It is concluded that complete or defective bacteriophages of the Kappa type morphology and serology are extremely prevalent in V. cholerae, regardless of biotype.  相似文献

A method is presented for the indirect detection of Vibrio cholerae by the multiplication of two specific bacteriophages: phiH74/64 for El-Tor vibrios, and phage group IV (Mukerjee) for classical vibrios. The product to be examined is seeded in alkaline tryptone water for enrichment, as in the classical method, and is then incubated for 6 h at 37 C. Thereafter, a loopful is transferred to each of two nutrient broth (pH 9) tubes. One of these receives a drop of phage phiH74/64; the other receives a drop of phage group IV. The stock phages are diluted so as to contain about 3,800 plaque-forming units in one drop; this is the maximum amount which, when added to 10 ml of broth, will not be detected in a loopful of 1 mm diameter. The tubes containing phage phiH74/64 are incubated at 42 C; those with phage group IV are incubated at 37 C. After 18 h the cultures are killed by agitation with chloroform, and a 1-mm loopful is deposited on a layer seeded with the detector strains: Makassar 757 for El-Tor phage and V. cholerae 154 for classical cholera phage. After 4 to 5 h at 37 C, lysis appears on the spot areas if there has been phage multiplication in the respective broth tubes. With experimentally contaminated sewage water, vegetables, or stools, 1 to 10 cholera vibrios were detected in every sample. In rare cases, false-positive results were obtained by multiplication of the phage on non-cholera vibrios.  相似文献

Sensitivity of 82 cultures of parahemolytic vibrios to 8 antibiotics was studied. It was shown that the majority of the strains were highly sensitive to levomycetin and gentamicin, sensitive to tetracycline, rifampicin, streptomycin, neomycin and kanamycin and resistant to ampicillin.  相似文献

A set of phages has been isolated from strains of Staphylococcus aureus , non-typable with the International (human) phage set, recovered from processed poultry. This set of phages could distinguish three main groups of strains, and biochemical tests confirmed these divisions, members of each group exhibiting characteristics of both 'human'and 'animal'strains. Lactobacilli are members of the bacterial flora of lactic starter cultures used to generate lactic acid fermentation in a number of animal or plant products used as human or animals foods. They can be affected by phage outbreaks, which can result in faulty and depreciated products. Two groups of phages specific of Lactobacillus casei have been thoroughly studied. 1. The first group is represented by phage PL-1. This phage behaves as lytic in its usual host L. casei ATCC 27092, but can lysogenize another strain, L. casei ATCC 334. Bacterial receptors of this phage are located in a cell-wall polysaccharide and rhamnose is the main component of the receptors. Ca2+ and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) are indispensable to ensure the injection of the phage DNA into the bacterial cell. The phage DNA is double-stranded, mostly linear, but with cohesive ends which enables it to be circularized. The vegetative growth of PL-1 proceeds according to the classical mode. Cell lysis is produced by an N-acetyl-muramidase at the end of vegetative growth. 2. The second group is represented by the temperate phage phi FSW of L. casei ATCC27139. It has been shown how virulent phages originate from this temperate phage in Japanese dairy plants. The lysogenic state of phi FSW can be altered either by point mutations or by the insertion of a mobile genetic element called ISL 1, which comes from the bacterial chromosome. This is the first transposable element that has been described in lactobacilli. Lysogeny appears to be widespread among lactobacilli since one study showed that 27% of 148 strains studied, representing 15 species, produced phage particles after induction by mitomycin C. Similarly, 23 out of 30 strains of Lactobacillus salivarius are lysogenic and produce, after induction by mitomycin C, temperate phages, killer particles, or defective phages. Temperate phages have also been found in 10 out of 105 strains of Lactobacillus bulgaricus or Lactobacillus lactis after induction by mitomycin C. Phages so far studied of the latter 2 and closely related lactobacilli, either temperate or isolated as lytic, may be divided into 4 unrelated groups called a, b, c and d. Most of these phages are found in group a and an unquestionable relationship has already been shown between lytic phages and temperate phages that belong to this group. Lytic phage LL-H of L. lactis LL 23, isolated in Finland, is one of the most representative of those of group a and has been extensively studied on the molecular level.  相似文献

Summary and conclusions Phages were isolated which were adsorbed bySalmonella strains of groups B and D. These phages were adaptable to strains of species from these groups. The behaviour of some adaptations of these phages on strains ofS. paratyphi B has been described. A typing scheme forS. typhimurium has been established. The phage types of 78 S. aureus strains isolated from nose swabs obtained from a medical students in 2005 -2006 was determined and antibiotic resistance of the phage types was analysed. 680 students were tested in order to obtain the strains and 11.5% of them were carriers of S. aureus. Phage typing was performed using basic set of23 phages and 3 additional phages: 88, 89 and 187. Drug resistance was determined by the disc-diffusion method. The most frequent in studied population were the group III (21.8%) and strains lysed by phages belonging to varied groups (21.8%). Highly different phage patterns were observed among strains belonging to each of the group. Strains belonging to the group III as the strains lysed by phages from varied groups were most frequently resistant only to penicillin (52,9% respectively). Resistance to penicillin was also most often observed in the strains belonging to another groups and phage types. Usefulness of the additional phages 88,89 and 187 was in the investigations as no more than 51% of strains was lysed by this phages.  相似文献

By inducing with mitomycin C the following phages were isolated from all the tested 32 methicillin resistant strains of S. aureus: the serogroup B phage was isolated from 2 strains, the serogroup B and F phages were isolated from 5 strains and the serogroup F phage was isolated from 25 strains. The phages were divided into 5 groups by the antiphage immunity. In group 1 of the phages 4 additional phages were specified. This survey included 23 phages isolated from cheese whey and 12 temperate phages induced with mitomycin from their lysogenic host strains. All of the phages had an isometric head and a tail with a contractile sheath. In addition, short-tailed (160-nm-long) and long-tailed (260-nm-long) phages were distinguished. Short-tailed phages were by far the most widespread in French cheese factories (32 of the 35 phages studied). The study of phage relationships enabled two large groups of strains to be distinguished: those not or slightly sensitive to phages and those very sensitive to phages. There was an obvious relationship in the first group between phage sensitivity (or resistance) and the geographic origin of the strains. The second group contained primarily strains from large international collections and those isolated from commercial starters. The relationships among short-tailed phages, either temperate or isolated as lytic, suggest that lysogenic strains could be the major source of phages in French cheese factories.  相似文献

Five bacteriophages were isolated from lysogenic strains of Salmonella potdam. On the basis of plaque morphology, thermostability, serology, host range, one-step growth parameters, and phage morphology, they were divided into three groups: group A, phages P4 and P9c; group B, phages P3 and P9a; and group C, phage P10. Group A phages had a hexagonal head 55 nm in diameter with a short tail 15 nm long. These phages were particularly characterized by high thermostability, lack of serological relationship with any of the other phages, and restriction of lysis to other Salmonella strains of Kauffmann-White group C(1). Group B phages had a head identical in size and shape to that of the A phages, but they possessed a tail 118 nm long with a contractile sheath. A unique feature was the occurrence of tail fibers at the end of the core rather than at the base of the sheath. These phages were considerably less thermostable, had extended host ranges, and were serologically distinct from each other but unrelated to the A phages. The group C phage, P10, had a head identical to that of the A and B phages. It had a tail 95 nm in length, with tail fibers attached to a base plate at the end of a contractile sheath. P10 was highly sensitive to heat, lysed only smooth strains of Salmonella, and showed a degree of serological relationship to both B phages. The relationship of these phage groups to previous Salmonella phage grouping schemes is discussed.  相似文献

S ummary : The present report gives the results of the effect of 10 bacteriophages of Serratia marcescens on 107 strains of the genus Serratia . The phage S103 was the most effective (80% strains lyzed), and the phage PK the least (12% strains lyzed). Only 13 strains were resistant to all the phages studied. The majority of the strains of the genus studied could be allocated to one of seven groups on the basis of their sensitivity to the phages.  相似文献

The possibility of using phages, isolated from the lysogenic cultures of methicillin-resistant staphylococci and modified in methicillin-resistant cultures of phage 85, for the differentiation of nontypable staphylococcal strains has been studied. The variants of phage 85 cannot be used for the determination of differences between the strains of methicillin-resistant cultures; they are not suited for typing. For this purpose the collection of phages isolated from lysogenic methicillin-resistant cultures should be used.  相似文献

Any bacterial strain can be infected by virulent phages or harbour one or more prophages. Therefore, bacteria-phage interactions are to be regarded as fundamental properties of bacteria. In current industrial fermentation processes phages can be advantageously employed for the identification of bacterial production strains (phage typing). In some cases phages are involved in the production of enzymes and special substances. The fundamental importance of phages in any technical fermentation process, however, is based on the peculiarities of their obligately parasitic life cycle. The propagation of phages in fermentation processes can cause complete (or at least partial) lysis of the production strains and, consequently, serious disturbances in the production process and considerable economic losses. The phage problem in the fermentation industry has not yet been completely solved. For the protection of technical processes against virulent phages five measures are discussed: phage-protected sterile fermentation, employment of alternative cultures, employment of phage-resistant mutants, employment of phage inhibitors, and employment of immobilized bacterial cells. The problem of the protection of bacterial production strains from prophage induction is more difficult and practically unsolved. Two possibilities to minimize the process risk due to temperate phages, the elimination of inducing factors during the fermentation process, and the selection of production strains which are difficult to induce, are discussed.  相似文献

Salmonella weltevreden has been found to be one of the commonest Salmonella serotypes isolated from diverse sources in India and has also been isolated in a number of other countries. A phage typing scheme was developed for this serotype using a set of six typing phages. These phages had been selected out of 146 phage strains isolated and purified from stool samples of man, laboratory animals and other animals, sewage and surface water sources, and the lytic mutants of temperate phages from S. weltevreden.The phage typing scheme was applied systematically to type the 946 strains from India isolated during 1958–1974 and 148 strains originating from Australia, Burma, England, Gan Island, Holland, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, The Philippines, Thailand, The United States and Vietnam during 1953–1971. The scheme was particularly studied to evaluate its utility in mapping the epidemiologically related strains from various sources.The S. weltevreden strains could be classified into ten phage types. Phage types 2 and 7 were found exclusively amongst Indian strains, type 6 from Vietnam and type 8 from Burma, Thailand and Vietnam. Phage types were found to be stable and consistent with the independent epidemiological data available.  相似文献

2545 strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from 24 Polish laboratories in the years 1994-95 were investigated. Phage typing was performed according to the method of Blair and Williams using the present basic set of typing phages and additional phages 88, 89 and 187. The phages were employed in concentrations of RTD and 100 x RTD. The predominance of phage group II, reported elsewhere since 1980-ties, was found in the present study (23.6%). Strains of group III were second in frequency (16.6%), whereas strains of groups I and V, as well as type 95 occurred in small percentage (7.6%, 4% and 3.4% respectively). Strains of groups II and V have been rarely lysed by phages belonging to other groups. The use of additional phages resulted in typability of strains by 7.9%. Percentage of non-typable strains was high and amounted to 22.0%.  相似文献

The morphology of 75 bacteriophage strains isolated from water samples collected in the North Sea or in the northern Atlantic was studied by electron microscopy. Only tailed phages were observed (bradley groups A, B, and C). According to structural similarities, the strains are ascribed to 12 groups, 5 of which comprise types of marine phages not reported before. Four of these 5 groups include phage types that have not been detected from any other source. Among the phages isolated from northern Atlantic water a high incidence was observed of strains the particles of which have long appendages. Certain types of the northern Atlantic phages investigated were derived only from samples collected either east or west of the Azores. This finding agrees with former observations pointing to the existence of different populations of closely related bacteria east and west, respectively, of the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge.  相似文献
