Review of the literature reveals sporadic but true increases in the prevalence and death rates for asthma over the past 25 years. Although changes in hereditary, allergic and environmental factors must be considered as possible causes of this increase, its suddenness points to risk factors that change rapidly. Such is the case with atmospheric pollutants, notably nitrogen dioxide and particles, both of which have been shown to have adverse effects on the tracheobronchial tree. These pollutants tend to concentrate inside homes, especially since the early 1980s, when the energy crisis brought about changes in the home environment.  相似文献

A four-year longitudinal study of the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and disease in schoolchildren and related environmental and socio-economic factors is in progress. We report results for the first year of this study (1973). A total of 5758 children aged 6 to 11 years from 28 randomly selected areas of England and Scotland were examined. In an analysis of the effects on health of possible indoor pollutants, boys and girls from homes in which gas was used for cooking were found to have more cough, "colds going to the chest", and bronchitis than children from homes where electricity was used. The girls also had more wheeze if their families used gas for cooking. This "cooking effect" appeared to be independent of the effects of age, social class, latitude, population density, family size, overcrowding, outdoor levels of smoke and sulphur dioxide and types of fuel used for heating. It was concluded that elevated levels of oxides of nitrogen arising from the combustion of gas might be the cause of the increased respiratory illness.  相似文献

The populations residing near polluted sites are more prone to various types of diseases. The important causes of air pollution are the suspended particulate matter, respirable suspended particulate matter, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. As limited information is available enumerating the effect of these pollutants on liver physiology of the population living near the polluted sites; in the present study, we tried to investigate their effect on liver of the population residing near the oil drilling sites since birth. In this study, a randomly selected 105 subjects (46 subjects from oil drilling site and 61 subjects from control site) aged above 30 years were taken under consideration. The particulate matter as well as the gaseous pollutants, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, were analyzed through a respirable dust sampler. The level of alkaline phosphatase, alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase enzymes in serum were measured by spectrophotometer. The generalized regression model studies suggests a higher concentration of respirable suspended particulate matter, suspended particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide lowers the alkaline phosphatase level (p<0.0001) by 3.5 times (95% CI 3.1-3.9), 1.5 times (95% CI 1.4 - 1.6) and 12 times (95% CI 10.74 -13.804), respectively in the exposed group. The higher concentration of respirable suspended particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide in air was associated with increase in alanine transaminase level (p<0.0001) by 0.8 times (95% CI 0.589-1.049) and by 2.8 times (95% CI 2.067-3.681) respectively in the exposed group. The increase in nitrogen dioxide level was also associated with increase in aspartate transaminase level (p<0.0001) by 2.5 times (95% CI 1.862 – 3.313) in the exposed group as compared to control group. Thus, the study reveals that long-term exposure to the environmental pollutants may lead to liver abnormality or injury of populations living in polluted sites.  相似文献

In U.S. nursing homes, it is the job of nursing assistants to tend to residents' basic bodily needs, including elimination and incontinence care. Given their frequent contact with pollutants, aides are very much at risk of becoming "polluted people." In this article, I investigate how nursing assistants' continual contact with contaminating substances impacts their status within the workplace, their relationships with others, and their attitudes toward their work and themselves as workers. I also explore how aides manage their encounters with pollutants and their stigmatized role as "dirty workers." In doing so, I hope to explicate the meaning of elimination and of incontinence caregiving in the United States.  相似文献

There is now great concern that air pollutants (especially sulfur dioxide, ozone, and oxides of nitrogen) can alter the physiological processes of plants, thereby affecting patterns of growth. Air pollutants cause damage to leaf cuticles and affect stomatal conductance. They can also have direct effects on photosynthetic systems, leaf longevity, and patterns of carbon allocation within plants. Pollutants interact with other environmental factors, and may alter plant-environment relationships on a regional scale. In this article, Winner and Atkinson summarize current knowledge of the effects of air pollutants on plant growth and physiology, and indicate the new directions of research now under way in North America and Europe.  相似文献

Effects of aerial pollutants on the growth and yield of spring barley   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Open-topped chambers were used to determine the effect of field concentrations of aerial pollutants on the growth and yield of spring barley. Experiments were conducted in the Marston Valley, Bedfordshire, where sulphur dioxide and fluoride are the major pollutants. The charcoal filtered chambers enabled pollutant concentrations to be reduced by 60–70%. Cleaning the air increased straw and grain yields. The filtration was non-selective and did not identify the injurious agent. The chambers were found to accelerate the crop's development by 7–8 days and reduce yield by suppressing tillering.  相似文献

The response of an Australian arid-zone gecko community to sulphur dioxide and salt spray from a mine and industrial site was investigated from 1992 to 1995. Geckos were abundant and fecund at control sites in chenopod shrubland and annual capture rates were strongly influenced by minimum night temperatures. Capture rate and percentage of females gravid at sites exposed to high concentrations of air pollutants were significantly lower than at control sites. Discrepancies between control and impacted sites were greatest for the termite-specialist geckos Diplodactylus conspicillatus and Rhynchoedura ornata. An increase in capture rates and percentage of females gravid at sites close to the industrial site, followed a reduction in peak sulphur dioxide emissions. Geckos may be sensitive and useful bioindicators of the environmental impacts of some atmospheric pollutants. Received: 1 September 1997 / Accepted: 17 November 1997  相似文献

In the last decades, many studies have shown an increase in the prevalence of allergic rhinitis and asthma mainly in urban communities, especially in industrialized countries. Airborne pollutants such as diesel exhaust particles, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide have been implicated in the initiation and exacerbation of allergic airway diseases. Epidemiologic studies have shown clear associations between air pollution and allergic diseases, in vivo and in vitro studies have provided biologic link and potential molecular mechanisms. Particulate and gaseous pollutants can act both on the upper and lower airways to initiate and exacerbate cellular inflammation through interaction with the innate immune system. As a consequence, increased non-specific airway hyper-responsiveness and airway resistance have been observed in man. Diesel exhaust particles can both induce and exacerbate in vivo allergic responses. They can also modify the immune system's handling of the allergen. The effects of gaseous pollutants on immune responses to allergens are not fully understood. We review the different mechanisms involved in the enhancement of allergic inflammation by urban air pollutants, including effects on cytokine and chemokine production, as well as activation of different immune cells. We discuss the hypothesis that pollutants' effects on the immune system involve hierarchical oxidative stress. Susceptibility genes to air pollution inducing allergic diseases are also discussed.  相似文献

The responses of Sphagnum species to atmospheric pollution by sulphur and nitrogen oxides are reviewed. An explanation of the tolerance of sulphur dioxide in Sphagnum cuspidatum is provided. This involves an exclusion mechanism by the oxidation of bisulphite ions to less toxic sulphate ions catalysed by the presence of iron and possibly other metals on the cell wall cation-exchange sites. Tolerance is influenced by changing the iron content of the plants. A similar mechanism may account for sulphur dioxide tolerance in Sphagnum recurvum.
Evidence for a close coupling of nitrate assimilation with the atmospheric nitrogen supply in ombrotrophic Sphagnum species in unpolluted regions is reviewed, and this coupling is shown to be lost in polluted environments with high atmospheric nitrogen supply. The potential effects of a supra-optimal atmospheric nitrogen supply to Sphagnum species on the ecology of mires is discussed.
The effects of nitrogen and sulphur pollutants on Sphagnum species are used to make broad generalizations as to how other bryophyte species might respond to these pollutants and to explain known effects of atmospheric pollution on bryophyte communities.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To carry out a prospective combined quantitative analysis of the associations between all cause mortality and ambient particulate matter and sulphur dioxide. DESIGN: Analysis of time series data on daily number of deaths from all causes and concentrations of sulphur dioxide and particulate matter (measured as black smoke or particles smaller than 10 microns in diameter (PM10)) and potential confounders. SETTING: 12 European cities in the APHEA project (Air Pollution and Health: a European Approach). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Relative risk of death. RESULTS: In western European cities it was found that an increase of 50 micrograms/m3 in sulphur dioxide or black smoke was associated with a 3% (95% confidence interval 2% to 4%) increase in daily mortality and the corresponding figure for PM10 was 2% (1% to 3%). In central eastern European cities the increase in mortality associated with a 50 micrograms/m3 change in sulphur dioxide was 0.8% (-0.1% to 2.4%) and in black smoke 0.6% (0.1% to 1.1%). Cumulative effects of prolonged (two to four days) exposure to air pollutants resulted in estimates comparable with the one day effects. The effects of both pollutants were stronger during the summer and were mutually independent. CONCLUSIONS: The internal consistency of the results in western European cities with wide differences in climate and environmental conditions suggest that these associations may be causal. The long term health impact of these effects is uncertain, but today''s relatively low levels of sulphur dioxide and particles still have detectable short term effects on health and further reductions in air pollution are advisable.  相似文献

Epidemiological evidence has concurred with clinical and experimental evidence to correlate current levels of ambient air pollution, both indoors and outdoors, with respiratory effects. In this respect, the use of specific epidemiological methods has been crucial. Common outdoor pollutants are particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds and ozone. Short-term effects of outdoor air pollution include changes in lung function, respiratory symptoms and mortality due to respiratory causes. Increase in the use of health care resources has also been associated with short-term effects of air pollution. Long-term effects of cumulated exposure to urban air pollution include lung growth impairment, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and probably the development of asthma and allergies. Lung cancer and COPD have been related to a shorter life expectancy. Common indoor pollutants are environmental tobacco smoke, particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds and biological allergens. Concentrations of these pollutants can be many times higher indoors than outdoors. Indoor air pollution may increase the risk of irritation phenomena, allergic sensitisation, acute and chronic respiratory disorders and lung function impairment. Recent conservative estimates have shown that 1.5-2 million deaths per year worldwide could be attributed to indoor air pollution. Further epidemiological research is necessary to better evaluate the respiratory health effects of air pollution and to implement protective programmes for public health.  相似文献

Abstract. Important physiological processes, photosynthesis, respiration, carbon allocation and stomatal function are known to be affected by air pollutants. A wide range in sensitivity of photosynthesis both within and between species is evident from the literature for the pollutants sulphur dioxide, ozone, nitrogen oxide and hydrogen fluoride. Some of this variation is clearly due to genetic factors, but much is in response to differences in environmental conditions both prior to and during fumigation. Exposure of plants to mixtures of pollutants generally reduced the threshold at which effects were first detected and increased the level of inhibitory responses. In the majority of studies on stomatal responses to air pollutants, opening occurs at low concentrations, below the threshold for effects on photosynthesis, and closure occurs at injurious concentrations; this latter response often following the inhibition of photosynthesis. Effects on carbon allocation have been reported in response to air pollutants. Changes usually favour leaf development over root growth, which can compensate for a decline in net assimilation rate up to a certain point but may limit water uptake from soils with low moisture content. Future research into physiological effects of air pollutants should incorporate an integrated approach in which both key physiological parameters and growth parameters are measured together with estimates of the effective dose of pollutant. In this way, the underlying mechanisms to changes in growth and development will be more fully understood.  相似文献

BackgroundA large number of studies about effects of air pollutants on cardiovascular mortality have been conducted; however, those investigating association between air pollutants and cardiovascular morbidity are limited, especially in developing countries.MethodsA time-series analysis on the short-term association between outdoor air pollutants including particulate matter (PM) with diameters of 10 µm or less (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and cardiovascular morbidity was conducted in Tianjin, China based on 4 years of daily data (2008–2011). The morbidity data were stratified by sex and age. The effects of air pollutants during the warm season and the cool season were also analyzed separately.ResultsEach increase in PM10, SO2, and NO2 by increments of 10 µg/m3 in a 2-day average concentration was associated with increases in the cardiovascular morbidity of 0.19% with 95 percent confidence interval (95% CI) of 0.08–0.31, 0.43% with 95% CI of 0.03–0.84, and 0.52% with 95% CI of −0.09–1.13, respectively. The effects of air pollutants were more evident in the cool season than those in the warm season, females and the elderly were more vulnerable to outdoor air pollution.ConclusionsAll estimated coefficients of PM10, SO2 and NO2 are positive but only the effect of SO2 implied statistical significance at the 5% level. Moreover, season, sex and age might modify health effects of outdoor air pollutants. This work may bring inspirations for formulating local air pollutant standards and social policy regarding cardiovascular health of residents.  相似文献

Low energy efficiency, energy shortage, and energy-related environmental issues are becoming critical constraints for the sustainable development of China. This research aims for investigating the impacts of economic development on energy consumption and emissions of air pollutants in China with a comparison between China's developed regions and underdeveloped regions. The Resource and Environmental Performance Index (REPI) model is employed to analyze the performance of energy consumption, industrial waste gas, sulphur dioxide, soot, and industrial dust of selected provinces over the past 13 years. As a ratio of energy consumption or emissions of pollutants of a province and the whole country, the REPI value presents the cost of energy and environment and is not consistent with the change of absolute quantities of energy consumption or emissions of pollutants in a province. The REPI value calculated from 2000 through 2012 indicates that economic development has a certain level of impact on energy consumption and air environment but not necessarily to be negative. Economic development can improve the performance on energy consumption and air pollutants reduction as long as reasonable energy and industrial structure, improved energy efficiency, and strict environmental policies are put in place.  相似文献

综述了国内外近年来道路交通污染及其空气污染物对昆虫影响的研究状况。介绍了交通污染的现状,阐述了汽车尾气中不同污染物,包括二氧化硫(SO2)、氮氧化物(NOx,包括NO和NO2)、碳氧化物(COx,包括CO和CO2)、挥发性有机物(VOCs)、酸雨和臭氧(O3),以及细颗粒扬尘等污染物对昆虫发生和种群适合度等的影响,并分析了交通污染影响昆虫的作用机理,指出了国内今后该领域的研究方向。此外,道路交通污染对周边生物环境也会造成相关的生态影响。今后应加强生态道路建设,减轻交通污染对路域生态系统的影响。  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To investigate whether outdoor air pollution levels in London influence daily mortality. DESIGN--Poisson regression analysis of daily counts of deaths, with adjustment for effects of secular trend, seasonal and other cyclical factors, day of the week, holidays, influenza epidemic, temperature, humidity, and autocorrelation, from April 1987 to March 1992. Pollution variables were particles (black smoke), sulphur dioxide, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide, lagged 0-3 days. SETTING--Greater London. OUTCOME MEASURES--Relative risk of death from all causes (excluding accidents), respiratory disease, and cardiovascular disease. RESULTS--Ozone levels (same day) were associated with a significant increase in all cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality; the effects were greater in the warm seasons (April to September) and were independent of the effects of other pollutants. In the warm season an increase of the eight hour ozone concentration from the 10th to the 90th centile of the seasonal change (7-36 ppb) was associated with an increase of 3.5% (95% confidence interval 1.7 to 5.3), 3.6% (1.04 to 6.1), and 5.4% (0.4 to 10.7) in all cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality respectively. Black smoke concentrations on the previous day were significantly associated with all cause mortality, and this effect was also greater in the warm season and was independent of the effects of other pollutants. For black smoke an increase from the 10th to 90th centile in the warm season (7-19 microg/m3) was associated with an increase of 2.5% (0.9 to 4.1) in all cause mortality. Significant but smaller and less consistent effects were also observed for nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide. CONCLUSION--Daily variations in air pollution within the range currently occurring in London may have an adverse effect on daily mortality.  相似文献

研究SO2(14,35,84mg/m^2)对大蒜幼根细胞的遗传损伤效应。结果表明:大蒜幼苗短时间暴露于高浓度SO2环境中,或者长时间生长在低浓度SO2环境中,均可导致根尖细胞微核和双核频率明显增高,并引起根尖部分细胞核固缩。SO2的上述效应具有明显的时间-效应和课题-效应关系,细胞中的微核、双核及核固缩率与SO2浓度间呈线性相关,研究结果表明:SO2可引起植物细胞遗传物质的损伤,大蒜根尖细胞有可能用作监测SO2污染的生物计量计。  相似文献
