Sperm competition occurs when the gametes of or more males compete for opportunities to fertilize a given set of ova. Previous studies have demonstrated that certain morphological characteristics are affected by sperm competition intensity (e.g. relative testes size and sperm midpiece volume). This study examined whether aspects of sperm energetics may also be affected by sexual selection. We compared the membrane potential of mitochondria in live sperm between H. sapiens (single partner mating system) and P. troglodytes (multiple partner mating system). Flow cytometry of sperm stained with the carbocyanine fluorescent dye JC-1 (an assay for mitochondrial membrane potential) revealed marked differences in red fluorescence intensity. P. troglodytes sperm showed significantly higher mitochondrial membrane potential. Mitochondria provide a substantial part of the energy required for sperm motility. A higher mitochondrial loading may therefore be associated with enhanced sperm motility and/or longevity. Additionally, examination of JC-1 red fluorescence levels before and after in vitro capacitation revealed further differences. Whereas chimpanzee sperm showed maintenance of membrane potential after capacitation (in some cases even an increase), sperm from humans consistently showed reduction in membrane potential. These results indicate that the sperm of human beings and chimpanzees exhibit marked differences in mitochondrial function, which are affected by selection pressures relating to sperm competition and that these pressures differ significantly between humans and chimpanzees.  相似文献

Using the theoretical perspective of evolutionary biology, 13 hypotheses were generated concerning sex and age differences in human mate preferences and tactics of mate attraction. Classified “lonely hearts” advertisements (N = 1,000) from a nationally circulated, fortnightly magazine were content-analyzed. Men, more than women, sought cues to reproductive value (i.e., physical appearance and youth), whereas women, more than men, sought cues revealing an ability to acquire resources (i.e., actual and potential financial security and older men). Women also sought to ascertain a man's willingness to provide resources (in the form of time, emotions, money, and status) in a relationship. Both sexes offered those traits sought by the opposite sex. Men were more promiscuously inclined than women, favoring casual relationships and being more likely to be married, whereas women sought long-term monogamous relationships. These differences support evolutionary predictions based on concepts of sexual selection, parental investment, and reproductive capacities and confirm the use of personal advertisements as a valuable method of research.  相似文献

This study sought to resolve a longstanding debate of the function of anconeus. Intramuscular and surface electromyography electrodes recorded muscle activity from two regions of anconeus and from typical elbow flexion and extension muscles. Eleven participants performed pronation–supination around the medial and lateral axes of the forearm, elbow flexion–extension in pronation, supination and neutral positions of the forearm, and gripping. Maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and submaximal (10% MVC) force-matching tasks were completed. Activity varied between longitudinal (AL) and transverse (AT) segments of anconeus. Although both muscle regions were active across multiple directions (including opposing directions), AL was more active during pronation than supination, whereas AT showed no such difference. During pronation, activity of AL and AT was greatest about the lateral forearm axis. AT was more active during elbow extension with the forearm in pronation, whereas AL did not differ between pronated and neutral forearm alignment. These findings are consistent with the proposal that AL makes a contribution to control of abduction of the ulna during forearm pronation. Different effects of forearm position on AL and AT activity during elbow extension may be explained by the anatomical differences between the regions. These data suggest anconeus performs multiple functions at the elbow and forearm and this varies between anatomically distinct regions of the muscle.  相似文献

Individuals tend to choose mates who are sufficiently genetically dissimilar to avoid inbreeding. As facial attractiveness is a key factor in human mate preference, we investigated whether facial preferences were related to genetic dissimilarity. We asked female volunteers to rate the attractiveness of men from photographs and compared these results with individual genotypes at the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). In contrast to previously reported preferences based on odour, we found a non-significant tendency for women to rate MHC-similar faces as more attractive, suggesting a preference for cues to a self-similar MHC in faces. Further analysis revealed that male faces received higher attractiveness scores when rated by women who were MHC-similar than by MHC-dissimilar women. Although unexpected, this MHC-similar facial preference is consistent with other studies documenting assortative preferences in humans, including for facial phenotype.  相似文献

The search for a potential partner has been aided over recent years by the widespread use of online dating sites and this process of relationship formation has conveniently presented an ideal opportunity for researchers to analyze human mating desires and to compare evolutionary and social constructivist based hypotheses. One such aspect of human mating behaviour yet to be thoroughly explored using access to online dating advertisements is the idealized age desired by each sex when considering a possible relationship. This study accessed minimum (youngest age considered) and maximum (oldest age considered) age preferences from 14 separate cultures and two religious groups from both sexes at ages 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 years. The results showed that overall there was a growing disparity between males own age and preferred age of partner as males themselves aged (as indicated by greater effect sizes with advertisers age), with females showing a pattern for preferences around their own age or older. Females did not express an age preference for males younger than male's age preferences for females at any advertiser's age. On only three occasions were there no age differences between the sexes in their desire to initiate a relationship with the opposite sex. The results were clearly concurrent with earlier findings supportive of evolutionary or adaptationist interpretations. Neither a random pattern of age preferences more consistent with an arbitrary norms prediction, nor clear evidence for toy boy proclivities in females or males was found. Future studies utilizing the methodology used in this study to examine other human mating decision making processes are proposed.  相似文献

Friendships can help us solve a number of challenges, increasing our welfare and fitness. Across evolutionary time, some of the many challenges that friendships helped to solve may have differed between men and women. By considering the specific and potentially distinct recurrent problems men's and women's friendships helped them solve, we can derive predictions about the qualities that would have made men's and women's same-sex friends ideal partners. This logic leads to several predictions about the specific friend preferences that may be differentially prized by men and women. Across three studies (N = 745) with U.S. participants—assessing ideal hypothetical friends, actual friends, and using a paradigm adapted from behavioral economics—we find that men, compared to women, more highly value same-sex friends who are physically formidable, possess high status, possess wealth, and afford access to potential mates. In contrast, women, compared to men, more highly value friends who provide emotional support, intimacy, and useful social information. Findings suggest that the specific friendship qualities men and women preferred differed by sex in ways consistent with a functional account of friendship.  相似文献

To examine the muscle synergies of multi-directional postural control, we calculated the target-directed variance fraction (η) and net action direction of each muscle using the electromyogram-weighted averaging (EWA) method. Subjects stood barefoot on a force platform and maintained their posture by producing a center of pressure (COP) in twelve target directions. Surface electromyograms were recorded from 6 right-sided muscles: tibialis anterior (TA), soleus (SOL), lateral gastrocnemius (LG), medial gastrocnemius (MG), fibularis longus (FL), and gluteus medius (GM). η was calculated from COP with duration of 20-s, during which the COP was relatively constant. The EWA method was applied to the EMG and the two COP components to estimate the net action direction of each muscle. The results showed that η values in all directions did not cross the 0.8 threshold. This suggests that human postural control is achieved by synergistic co-activation. The EWA revealed that the net action directions of TA, SOL, LG, MG, and GM were 277.6°, 71.1°, 87.7°, 94.0°, and 2.2°, respectively. This suggests that postural maintenance by muscle synergy can be attributed to the relevant muscles having various action directions. These results demonstrate that muscle synergies can be investigated using COP fluctuations.  相似文献

Isolated cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were mated by micromanipulation and the reproductive capacity of the resulting zygotes was determined. The mating frequency was dependent on the age of the parents: conjugations between young cells and cells which had completed more than two thirds of their life-span were very rare events. The life-span of a zygote was very similar to the life-span of its shorter-lived parent. If one of the parent cells had budded several times prior to fusion, the life-span of the zygote was reduced correspondingly, i.e. there was no rescue by hybridization. In four crosses the distribution of buds on both of the parent cells was recorded. In three of these four crosses the buds were evenly distributed, and in one the -parent had three times as many buds as the a-parent.This study was supported by a grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (Bonn-Bad Godesberg).  相似文献

Mate preferences may operate in part to mitigate the threats posed by infectious disease. In this paper, we outline various ways in which preferring healthy mates can offer direct benefits in terms of pathogen avoidance and indirect benefits in terms of heritable immunity to offspring, as well as the costs that may constrain mate preferences for health. We then pay special attention to empirical work on mate preferences in humans given the depth and breadth of research on human mating. We review this literature and comment on the degree to which human mate preferences may reflect preferences for health.  相似文献

Fragrances have been used since at least 5000 years ago andall traditional scents are found in modern perfumes. Althoughperfumes are obviously involved in sexual communication, thesignificance of great individual differences in preferencefor fragrances is an evolutionary puzzle. The major histocompatibilitycomplex (MHC) is a highly polymorphic and conserved set of genes that plays an important role in immune function in vertebrates.Both mice and humans have been shown to prefer the body odorof potential partners that have a dissimilar MHC genotype,which would result in heterozygous offspring. We tested whetherindividual preferences for perfume ingredients correlate witha person's MHC genotype. The human MHC is called HLA (human leukocyte antigen). A total of 137 male and female studentswho had been typed for their MHC (HLA-A, -B, -DR) scored 36scents in a first test for use on self ("Would you like tosmell like that yourself?") and a subset of 18 scents 2 yearslater either for use on self or for a potential partner ("Wouldyou like your partner to smell like that?"). An overall analysisshowed a significant correlation between the MHC and the scoringsof the scents "for self" in both tests. In a detailed analysiswe found a significant interaction of the two most common HLAswith the rating of the 36 scents in the first study as wellas with the 18 scents in the second study when evaluated forself. This result suggests that persons who share, for example,HLA-A2, have a similar preference for any of the perfume ingredients.The significant repeatability of these preferences in the two tests showed that the volunteers that had either HLA-A1 or HLA-A2were significantly consistent in their preferences for theperfume ingredients offered. Hardly any significant correlationbetween MHC genotype and ratings of the scents "for partner"were found. This agrees with the hypothesis that perfumes areselected "for self" to amplify in some way body odors thatreveal a person's immunogenetics.  相似文献

The electromyographic activity of the diaphragm (EMGdi) and scalene muscle (EMGsc) was studied in the supine and upright positions, respectively, during hyperoxic progressive hypercapnic rebreathing (HCVR) in five healthy males. End-expiratory esophageal pressure (EEPes) was quantified on a breath-to-breath basis as a reflection of altered end-expiratory lung volume. There was no significant difference in the slopes of EMGdi, expressed as a percentage of maximum at total lung capacity vs. minute volume of ventilation (VI), between the supine and upright positions [0.79 +/- 0.05 (SE) vs. 0.92 +/- 0.17, respectively]. In contrast, the slope of the regression line relating EMGsc to VI was steeper in the upright than in the supine position (0.69 +/- 0.05 vs. 0.35 +/- 0.04, respectively; P less than 0.005). Positive EEPes at comparable VI at the ends of HCVRs were of greater magnitude upright than supine (3.27 +/- 0.68 vs. 4.35 +/- 0.60 cmH2O, respectively, P less than 0.001). We conclude that altering posture has a greater effect on scalene and expiratory muscle activity than on diaphragmatic activity during hypercapnic stimulation.  相似文献

Effects of facial coloration on facial attractiveness judgments are hypothesized to be “universal” (i.e., similar across cultures). Cross-cultural similarity in facial color preferences is a critical piece of evidence for this hypothesis. However, only two studies have directly compared facial color preferences in two cultures. Both of those studies reported that White UK and Black African participants showed similar preferences for facial coloration. By contrast with the cross-cultural similarity reported in those studies, here we show cultural differences in the effects of facial coloration on Chinese and White UK participants' facial attractiveness judgments. While Chinese participants preferred faces with decreased yellowness to faces with increased yellowness, White UK participants preferred faces with increased yellowness to faces with decreased yellowness. Chinese participants also demonstrated weaker preferences for facial redness and stronger preferences for facial lightness than did White UK participants. These results suggest that preferences for facial coloration are not universal.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that compromised postural balance in older subjects is associated with changes in calf muscle-tendon physiological and mechanical properties. Evolutionary theorists have posited that contemporary men and women may differ in their specific psychological mechanisms having to do with mate selection because different strategies would have benefitted men versus women in our distant ancestral past. From these theorized gender differences in mating strategies, several hypotheses were generated and subsequently tested in the current study using a large sample of personal advertisements (N = 1111). The results were generally supportive of evolutionary predictions: men were more likely than women to offer financial resources and honesty/ sincerity, and to seek attractiveness, appealing body shape, and a photograph in selecting a potential mate; women were more likely than men to offer an appealing body shape and to seek financial resources, qualities likely to lead to resource acquisition, and honesty/sincerity in potential mates. Women were also more likely than men to seek male friendship and/or companionship and to offer greater involvement only after the establishment of such friendship, whereas men more frequently than women made explicit requests for a sexual relationship. In general, men sought potential mates who were younger than themselves, a trend which became more pronounced among older advertisers. Women generally sought mates who were older than themselves, a trend which decreased slightly with the age of the advertiser. Results are discussed with regard to implications for hypothesized gender differences in evolved psychological mechanisms.  相似文献

Non-human animals can acquire novel route preferences by following knowledgeable individuals. Such socially learned route preferences can be stably maintained over multiple transmission episodes, sometimes forming long-lived traditions. In humans, preferences for familiar routes or heavily used worn trails over unfamiliar ones have been described in various contexts. However, social learning of route preferences has not been experimentally demonstrated in humans. Here, we demonstrate that social learning and tradition influence route choice. We led adult male and female participants into a room by one of two routes. Participants followed the demonstrated route choices, and later remembered and preferred this choice even when determinably suboptimal (i.e. longer and not preferred by control participants) or when the choice was indicated as arbitrary (the demonstrator took one route to retrieve a poster that had ostensibly fallen). Moreover, route preferences were stably maintained over multiple transmission episodes. We suggest that simple social learning processes, often neglected in human and primate research, can result in long-lived route preferences that may influence a range of additional behaviour patterns.  相似文献

Ethanol-induced sleeping time was determined in mice of both sexes at ages ranging from 3 weeks to just over 1 year. A progressive increase in sleeping time was seen in both sexes up to 26 weeks of age; no subsequent changes were observed, except for a modest decrease in the oldest female group. In the majority of age groups, sleeping time values were higher in females, but few statistically significant sex differences were found.  相似文献

Previous studies in animals and humans show that genes in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) influence individual odours and that females often prefer odour of MHC-dissimilar males, perhaps to increase offspring heterozygosity or reduce inbreeding. Women using oral hormonal contraceptives have been reported to have the opposite preference, raising the possibility that oral contraceptives alter female preference towards MHC similarity, with possible fertility costs. Here we test directly whether contraceptive pill use alters odour preferences using a longitudinal design in which women were tested before and after initiating pill use; a control group of non-users were tested with a comparable interval between test sessions. In contrast to some previous studies, there was no significant difference in ratings between odours of MHC-dissimilar and MHC-similar men among women during the follicular cycle phase. However, single women preferred odours of MHC-similar men, while women in relationships preferred odours of MHC-dissimilar men, a result consistent with studies in other species, suggesting that paired females may seek to improve offspring quality through extra-pair partnerships. Across tests, we found a significant preference shift towards MHC similarity associated with pill use, which was not evident in the control group. If odour plays a role in human mate choice, our results suggest that contraceptive pill use could disrupt disassortative mate preferences.  相似文献
