Paniceae demonstrate unique variability of photosynthetic physiology and anatomy, including both non-Kranz and Kranz species and all subtypes of the latter. This variability suggests hypotheses of independent origin or reversals (e.g., from C(4) to C(3)). These hypotheses can be tested by phylogenetic analysis of independent molecular characters. The molecular phylogeny of 57 species of Paniceae was explored using sequences from the grass-specific insert found in the plastid locus rpoC2. Phylogenetic analyses confirmed some long-recognized alliances in Paniceae, some recent molecular phylogenetic results, and suggested new relationships. Broadly, Paniceae were found to be paraphyletic with Andropogoneae, Panicum was found to be polyphyletic, and Oplismenus hirtellus was resolved as the sister group to the remaining ingroup species. A particularly well-supported clade in the rpoC2 tree included four genera with non-Kranz species and three with distinctively keeled paleas. As previously suggested, the PCK (phosphoenol pyruvate carboxykinase) C(4) subtype arose once within Paniceae. All clades with non-Kranz species had Kranz ancestors or sister taxa suggesting repeated loss of the Kranz syndrome.  相似文献

The gall formation in present case is the result of both hyperplastic and hypertrophic activities of the infected cells. The number of species of Bacteria and Archaea (ca 5000) is surprisingly small considering their early evolution, genetic diversity and residence in all ecosystems. The bacterial species definition accounts in part for the small number of named species. The primary procedures required to identify new species of Bacteria and Archaea are DNA-DNA hybridization and phenotypic characterization. Recently, 16S rRNA gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis have been applied to bacterial taxonomy. Although 16S phylogeny is arguably excellent for classification of Bacteria and Archaea from the Domain level down to the family or genus, it lacks resolution below that level. Newer approaches, including multilocus sequence analysis, and genome sequence and microarray analyses, promise to provide necessary information to better understand bacterial speciation. Indeed, recent data using these approaches, while meagre, support the view that speciation processes may occur at the subspecies level within ecological niches (ecovars) and owing to biogeography (geovars). A major dilemma for bacterial taxonomists is how to incorporate this new information into the present hierarchical system for classification of Bacteria and Archaea without causing undesirable confusion and contention. This author proposes the genomic-phylogenetic species concept (GPSC) for the taxonomy of prokaryotes. The aim is twofold. First, the GPSC would provide a conceptual and testable framework for bacterial taxonomy. Second, the GPSC would replace the burdensome requirement for DNA hybridization presently needed to describe new species. Furthermore, the GPSC is consistent with the present treatment at higher taxonomic levels.  相似文献

Summary The growth of several Pythium species is increased between 65 and 100% if cholesterol is added to the growth medium. The optimum concentration is 15 mcg per ml. Mycelium of Pythium ultimum, in which cholesterol is present, incorporates glucose-U-14C and releases 14CO2 at a faster rate than the corresponding sterol free mycelium. In sterol containing cells, more 14CO2 is produced from a given amount of absorbed glucose-U-14C than in sterol free cells, there is thus in sterol containing hyphae a higher level of energy production. This condition can account for the increase in growth due to cholesterol. Only if sterols are present in the cellular membranes of Pythium species is the optimum synthetic capacity reached.  相似文献

A multiple regression analysis was performed to establish relationships between the number of breeding landbird species and selected environmental variables for the Isles of Scilly, England.
Two analyses were made: the first with all variables log converted, the second without log conversion. In the log model the number of landbird species ( S ) was correlated with island area, r 2= 85.98. In the non-log model, S was most highly correlated with the number of habitats on an island.
Partial correlation analyses confirmed the importance of habitats, rejecting the importance of island area, and indicating that increasing intra-archipelagal isolation alone does not reduce the number of breeding species.  相似文献

The species problem is the long-standing failure of biologists to agree on how we should identify species and how we should define the word 'species'. The innumerable attacks on the problem have turned the often-repeated question 'what are species?' into a philosophical conundrum. Today, the preferred form of attack is the well-crafted argument, and debaters seem to have stopped inquiring about what new information is needed to solve the problem. However, our knowledge is not complete and we have overlooked something. In spite of the large number of studies on genome size, studies comparing genome size and growth‐related traits across a wider range of species from the same habitat, taking into account species phylogeny, are largely missing. I estimated the relationship between genome size and different seed and seedling traits in perennial herbs occurring in dry calcareous grasslands in northern Bohemia, Czech Republic. There was no relationship between genome size and plant traits in simple regression analyses, but several strong relationships emerged in analyses based on pairwise phylogenetically independent contrasts. There was a significant relationship between monoploid genome size and production of above‐ground biomass, seedling establishment success and seed weight and between holoploid genome size and seed dormancy. Because the results are based on phylogenetically independent contrasts over a range of species from the same type of habitat, they allow me to conclude that these patterns were not because of species group or habitat type, but really show a correlation with genome size. In contrast to previous studies, I found a higher number of relationships with monoploid than with holoploid genome size. This may be because the traits observed in this study are directly related to plant growth and thus to life‐cycle time, which is determined by monoploid genome size. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 160 , 290–298.  相似文献

Prototheca zopfii and Prototheca wickerhamii strains were exposed to subinhibitory concentrations of the antimycotic amphotericin B, and the effect of the treatment on their ultrastructure was assessed. The results revealed ultrastructural changes in the treated cells, expressed by swelling of mitochondria, degradation of cell organelles, accumulation of microbody like structures, lipid droplets and starch granules in the cytoplasm, and changes in the inner layer of the cell wall.  相似文献

Abstract This field study was designed to test whether the taxonomic group and geographic range size of a host plant species, usually found to influence insect species richness in other parts of the world, affected the number of gall species on Australian eucalypts. We assessed the local and regional species richness of gall-forming insects on five pairs of closely related eucalypt species. One pair belonged to the subgenus Corymbia, one to Monocalyptus, and three to different sections of Symphyomyrtus. Each eucalypt pair comprised a large and a small geographic range species. Species pairs were from coastal or inland regions of eastern Australia. The total number of gall species on eucalypt species with large geographic ranges was greater than on eucalypt species with small ranges, but only after the strong effect of eucalypt taxonomic grouping was taken into account. There was no relationship between the geographic range size of eucalypt species and the size of local assemblages of gall species, but the variation in insect species composition between local sites was higher on eucalypt species with large ranges than on those with small ranges. Thus the effect of host plant range size on insect species richness was due to greater differentiation between more widespread locations, rather than to greater local species richness. This study confirms the role of the geographic range size of a host plant in the determination of insect species richness and provides evidence for the importance of the taxon of a host plant.  相似文献

Species richness and patterns of abundance result from the interplay between niche differences, realized as intraspecific density dependence (IDD), and so-called neutral processes that arise when species fitnesses are similar. This paper presents an extension of neutral models that incorporates delays in IDD that could result from resource-mediated competition or through a pathogen pool. These delays reduce standing species richness and qualitatively change the shape of species abundance distributions and render them consistent with the hollow curve shape even in the presence of strong IDD.  相似文献

Fungal (mold) contamination is an important indicator of low-quality raw product used in food processing operations. Fluorescent-labeled lectins, specific for chitin, have been shown to be valuable for quantitative detection of mold in raw tomatoes.In this research, the response of individual fungal species to a rapid fluorescent lectin assay was investigated. Ten of the most common mold species were grown on two types of artificial broth media, and added to blended field tomatoes. The assay was conducted on each species, and linear regressions were developed, comparing the fluorescent lectin assay score with the fungal dry weight. The assay was able to detect all molds at sensitivities required for the tomato industry, and had high linearity (r2 ranging from 0.72 to 0.99) and low variability (standard error of calibration ranging from 20 to 116 microg of fungal biomass/ml of tomato juice) for individual species grown on V-8 juice broth.  相似文献
