Ctenomys talarum is a subterranean herbivorous rodent whose burrow systems exhibit particular characteristics, distinct from other subterranean environments. We studied seasonal variation in body composition of C. talarum in relation to energetic requirements. Body lipid content seasonally changed in C. talarum, related to reproductive cycle and thermorregulatory mechanisms. A decrease in protein body content was found only in spring. Ash content of females was lowest when most of them are in post partum estro. Observed variations in water body content could be associated with plant water content and/or metabolic regulation. Our results show the occurrence of seasonal variations in body composition in C. talarum, which could be related to the high cost of reproduction and the subterranean life style of this species.  相似文献

To test for the hypothesis that Ctenomys talarum can use the earth's magnetic field for spatial orientation, we carried out field and laboratory experiments to analyse if C. talarum burrows present any geomagnetic orientation in their natural habitat, if C. talarum show any spontaneous directional preference when starting to excavate their burrows and if this subterranean rodent is capable to use the earth's magnetic field to orient towards a goal in a complex maze. No correlation between the burrowing direction and the earth's magnetic field was found. We could not find any evidence for any spontaneous directional preference when starting to excavate the burrows in C. talarum. The change of the horizontal vector of the geomagnetic field did not affect the ability of this rodent to orient towards a goal in an artificial labyrinth. Explanations for these results and other possible mechanisms of orientation that could be used by C. talarum are discussed.  相似文献

We analysed the physical structure and functional interpretation of juvenile vocalizations ofCtenomys talarum Thomas, 1898. Two sounds, one true vocalization (care-elicitation call) and one mechanical sound (nursing sound) were recorded during the nestling period. Care-elicitation calls were emitted by isolated pups and caused the mother to respond by immediately approaching the pups to take care of them. This maternal response to the care-elicitation calls ofC. talarum pups, together with the production of these vocalizations during the first weeks after birth, when pups depend exclusively on their mother to obtain food and maintain their body temperature, give preliminary support for the recent theory that care-elicitation cries are honest advertisements of offspring need.  相似文献

A new nematode species, Graphidioides subterraneus n. sp., found in the stomach of C. talarum from Argentina is described. The new species more closely resembles G. mazzai Lent & Freitas, 1935, parasite of Galea leucoblephara from Argentina, and G. kravetzi Sutton & Durette-Desset, 1995, parasite of Holochilus brasiliensis from Uruguay. It can be distinguished by shorter spicules, by the shape of the gubernaculum, by shorter uterine branches, and by a different number of ridges of the synlophe all along the body.  相似文献

The helminth parasite fauna of a natural population of the octodontid, Ctenomys talarum, was studied. Parasites that were found included the nematodes Heligmostrongylus sp. and Trichuris sp. Total prevalence of parasitism was 92.3%, mean intensity of infection was 22.7 worms, and mean abundance was 21 worms. Prevalence and mean abundance of infection with Heligmostrongylus sp. were higher in C. talarum males relative to females. Ecological and physiological causes, as well as the mating system of the host species, influence the likelihood of sex differences in parasite infection. The low parasite burden and diversity of C. talarum are associated with restrictions imposed by the subterranean habitat and with life-history traits of these rodents. Whether these findings apply to other Ctenomys spp. is unknown.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to analyse and describe vocalizations of a solitary subterranean rodent, Ctenomys talarum. In adult C. talarum five different sounds (four true vocalizations and one mechanical sound) were recorded during different behavioural contexts. Using data from the laboratory and literature, we classified these vocalizations as territorial, distress, and mating calls. We found that the vocalization range in C. talarum is shifted towards low frequencies, which transmit better in underground burrows and match well the hearing range described for other species of subterranean rodents. These low-frequency vocalizations, also found in other non-related subterranean rodents, may reflect an adaptation to the acoustic conditions of the habitat. Electronic Publication  相似文献

Sensory modalities involved in the localization and selection of food represent critical information for understanding the foraging behavior of subterranean rodents. The objective of this study was to determine if a subterranean rodent that forages on aboveground plant parts, Ctenomys talarum, is able to detect the presence of odorous chemicals released by the plants into the soil to guide its excavation, as has been shown for subterranean species that forage on roots and bulbs. Individuals were introduced into an artificial Y‐maze, whose arms were filled with sandy soil in which plants either had or had not been growing (control). Digging activity exhibited in each soil type was recorded. The following plant species, present in the natural habitat of C. talarum, were used: Panicum racemosum (three different concentrations), Cortadeira sp., Margiricarpus pignatus, Ambrosia sp. and Raphanus sativus. The individuals allocated more time to excavation in the soil in which vegetation had been growing in comparison with the control for the five analysed plant species, except in the case of P. racemosum at its lowest concentration. The number of individuals that completed excavation in the tube‐containing soil in which plants had been growing was significantly higher than in the tube‐containing soil in which no plants had been growing, with the exception of P. racemosum at its lowest concentration and R. sativus. The results of the present study suggest that C. talarum have the ability to use olfaction to orient their digging while foraging even though members of this species consume mainly aboveground plant parts.  相似文献

For subterranean rodents, searching for food by extension of the tunnel system and maintenance of body temperature are two of the most important factors affecting their life underground. In this study we assess the effect of ambient temperature on energetics and thermoregulation during digging in Ctenomys talarum. We measured VO2 during digging and resting at ambient temperature (Ta) below, within, and above thermoneutrality. Digging metabolic rate was lowest at Ta within the thermoneutral zone and increased at both lower and higher temperatures, but body temperature (Tb) remained constant at all Tas. Below thermoneutrality, the cost of digging and thermoregulation are additive. Heat production for thermoregulation would be compensated by heat produced as a by-product of muscular activity during digging. Above thermoneutrality, conduction would be an important mechanism to maintain a constant Tb during digging.  相似文献

A total of 138 nematodes were found in the small intestine of Ctenomys talarum (Octodontidae) from Mar de Cobo, Argentina. A new nematode species, Pudica ctenomydis n. sp., is described. The new species more closely resembles P. pujoli Durette-Desset, 1990, parasite of Microcavia niata Thomas, from Bolivia. It can be distinguished from P. pujoli by the number of ridges and characteristics of the synlophe, the spicular morphology, differences in length between rays 9 and 10, and by the presence of a symmetrical caudal bursa and a cuticular expansion surrounding the body between vulva and anus in females.  相似文献

1. Resting metabolic rate and body temperature in function of ambient temperature were determined for two species of Ctenomys. 2. Oxygen consumption was lowest between 25 and 30 degrees C and was 0.946 +/- 0.030 and 0.968 +/- 0.022 in Ctenomys talarum (from Mar de Cobo and Necochea, respectively). Resting metabolic rate was 0.343 +/- 0.053 at 30 C in C. australis. 3. Mean rectal temperature at thermoneutrality was 36.1 +/- 0.13 and 37.3 +/- 0.17 in C. talarum and C. australis, respectively. 4. Limited thermoregulation occurred in C. talarum down to 20 degrees C but C. australis maintained body temperature down to 10 degrees C. 5. Both species of tuco-tucos became hyperthermic at ambient temperatures above thermoneutrality.  相似文献

The Andean tuco-tuco, Ctenomys fulvus (Rodentia: Ctenomyidae) inhabits one of the most arid regions of the world, the Salar de Atacama, Northeast of Antofagasta, Chile (23°17′06″S, 68°05′43″W; 2.240 m.a.s.l). We found that a stable microclimate in burrows, a low evaporative water loss (EWL), and a diet of roots (59% water content) are the main factors that permit the survival of this fossorial species in harsh desert conditions. Large circadian variation in Ta was observed above ground. Daily ΔTa (Ta max − Ta min) = 37.9±0.2°C in summer and in winter. In contrast, circadian variation of Ta inside the burrows was only 5.8±0.5°C in the same seasons. Relative humidity (RH) was 1.9–3.1% during the day, increasing to maximum values of 27% at night and early morning. Inside the burrows RH was higher and quite stable, ranging between 53.1 and 65%, independent of the time of day and season. EWL, measured between 10 and 25°C, was low (1.26 mg/g h), and a moderate increase of 13–20% was observed at higher temperatures. The low EWL may prevent dehydration. However, because of the low heat loss capability, animals became hyperthermic (0.8–1.6°C) in dry air at Ta=30–35°C. As Ta during afternoon normally exceeded 35°C, the microclimate of burrows provided the only way to avoid the lethal effects of hyperthermia.  相似文献

Ctenomys talarum is a subterranean herbivorous rodent which due to its particular life style is frequently exposed to variations in surface environmental conditions (i.e. food quality and availability, temperature). Thus, unlike other subterranean rodents, C. talarum has to buffer both the surface and burrow challenging environmental conditions. We studied the occurrence of digestive strategies at different levels of C. talarum living in their natural habitat. We determined the dimensions of different parts of the gastrointestinal tract and organs along as the activity of key digestive enzymes (disaccharidase, N-aminopeptidase) in different parts of the gut in individuals seasonally caught. The results show that C. talarum exhibits characteristics in the gut at the biochemical level (high disaccharidase activities in small intestine, high N-aminopeptidase activity in the caecum and large intestine, and a seasonal differential modulation of N-aminopeptidase activity in small and large intestines), which could represent adaptive strategies to face seasonal variations in key environmental factors.  相似文献

Sequence variability of RPCS (repetitive PuvII Ctenomys sequence), the major satellite DNA of octodontid Ctenomys rodents, was analysed in species belonging to three groups of species representing the two patterns of karyotypic evolution in the genus: stable and dynamic karyotypes among closely related species. The studied species represent the overall range of RPCS copy number (2000--6.6x10(6) copies per haploid genome) in the genus. RPCS sequence was characterised by PCR amplification of the genomic consensus sequence and cloned monomers. Our results suggest that RPCS genomic consensus sequence variability correlates with RPCS copy number stability and karyotypic stastis, but not with high or low RPCS copy number values. In contrast, the RPCS gcs shows a mutational profile that is similar across all analysed species. Our data suggest that an RPCS ancestral library of variants was maintained through the cladogenesis of the genus. There is also evidence pointing to the simultaneous contribution of processes of concerted evolution that resulted in a reduced representation of some ancestral variants and their partial replacement for new ones. In addition, analysis of distribution of the variability along the monomer suggests that subsequences of the RPCS are subject to some degree of constraint, probably driven by the recent replicative activity of RPCS in species with high copy number.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the maternal costs of reproduction and pup development in the subterranean rodent Ctenomys talarum (Thomas 1898). Statistical differences were detected in whole-animal metabolic rates between nonreproductive and pregnant or lactating females. Whole-animal metabolic rates during pregnancy and lactation were 128% and 151% of the resting metabolic rate (RMR) observed in nonreproductive females. The total additional energy cost of reproduction (above the nonreproductive level) was similar for both the gestation and lactation periods. Mass-specific RMR revealed an upregulation of cell or tissue metabolism during lactation but not during gestation. The mass-specific metabolic rate of pups was 237% of the adults' metabolic rates. No differences were observed in body temperature among nonreproductive, pregnant, or lactating females. No differences were detected in body mass at birth among pups from litters with different numbers of nestlings. Pups increased their body temperature, reaching adult temperature at 30 d of age, when they were near weaning. Milk constituted the exclusive food for pups until they started eating solid food at 10 d old. Suckling time decreased with age of pups, and at the same time, mother chases directed toward their pups increased. These reproductive characteristics may contribute to successful existence in a subterranean habitat.  相似文献

The South American subterranean rodent genus Ctenomys (Caviomorpha: Octodontoidea), which uses both claws and teeth to dig, shows striking morphological adaptations to its specialized mode of life. Among other traits, the genus has evolved a powerful jaw musculature and procumbent incisors that are used for dento-excavation. Behavioral observations indicate that these traits are also used during male aggressive encounters, which characterize the polygynous mating system of one of the species of the genus, Ctenomys talarum. A question emerges about sexual selection: could it have induced further changes in traits primarily evolved as adaptations for digging? To address this issue, we studied functional and morphological attributes of the jaw and incisors in specimens of C. talarum. Incisor bite forces were measured on wild females and males from a local population (Mar de Cobo; Buenos Aires Province) by means of a strain gauge load cell force transducer. Museum specimens coming from the same population were studied to assess anatomical attributes of both sexes. Since this species exhibits dimorphism in body size, the possible effect of body mass on the studied traits was analyzed. Males and females showed significant differences in biting performance and mandibular width, but when size was taken into account these differences disappeared. However, other dimorphic traits can vary with a certain independence with respect to size, particularly the 2nd moment of area of the incisors and, to a lesser extent, incisor procumbency. The former geometrical parameter, which is proportional to the bending strength, was highly dimorphic. This fact suggests that, during aggressive encounters between males, biting would place large bending loads on the incisors.  相似文献

Nutritional response to different diet quality was examined in the subterranean rodent Ctenomys talarum (tuco-tuco). Animals maintained in captive conditions were fed with three plant species that differed in their fibre content. Tuco-tucos showed the ability to perform adjusts in short time lapse in response to diet quality; food ingestion, egestion and feces ingestion changed in animals under different plant species diets. Time budget, mainly time devoted to feeding and activity accompanied such changes. Coprophagy was practiced along the day and night following the arrhythmic activity pattern found for this species. Feces reingestion was not associated to resting. Furthermore, it was observed during fresh food ingestion, being pellets chewed. Soft and hard feces differed in morphological and nutritional characteristics.  相似文献

Six distinct peptidases have been found to occur in the erythrocytes of the Tuco-tuco. The substrate specificities suggest that these enzymes are homologous with the peptidases previously described in man and the mouse. Common polymorphisms of two of this group of enzymes are described.  相似文献

In this work we examined the phylogeography of the South American subterranean herbivorous rodent Ctenomys talarum (Talas tuco-tuco) using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region (D-loop) sequences, and we assessed the geographical genetic structure of this species in comparison with that of subterranean Ctenomys australis, which we have shown previously to be parapatric to C. talarum and to also live in a coastal sand dune habitat. A significant apportionment of the genetic variance among regional groups indicated that putative geographical barriers, such as rivers, substantially affected the pattern of genetic structure in C. talarum. Furthermore, genetic differentiation is consistent with a simple model of isolation by distance, possibly evidencing equilibrium between gene flow and local genetic drift. In contrast, C. australis showed limited hierarchical partitioning of genetic variation and departed from an isolation-by-distance pattern. Mismatch distributions and tests of neutrality suggest contrasting histories of these two species: C. talarum appears to be characterized by demographic stability and no significant departures from neutrality, whereas C. australis has undergone a recent demographic expansion and/or departures from strict neutrality in its mtDNA.  相似文献
