Summary A survey was made of the occurrence of zooplankton in fresh and brackish waters at Cape Thompson, Alaska between June 28, 1960 and August 7, 1961.Fourteen species of Cladocera and 38 species of Copepoda (13 Calanoida, 11 Cyclopoida and 14 Harpacticoida) were distinguished in collections from 10 lakes, 8 lagoons, and 111 pools.Males of Daphnia middendorffiana are illustrated and their geographical significance discussed. Cyclops scutifer had the only hibernal developmental cycle; all others had developmental cycles during early summer or throughout the summer and fall.Relatively complete seasonal developmental cycles are presented for Holopedium gibberum, Daphnia middendorf iana, Heterocope septentrionalis, Eurytemora canadensis, E. gracilicauda, Limnocalanus johanseni, Diaptomus pribilofensis, D. arcticus, Cyclops scutifer, and C. magnus.
Zusammenfassung Eine Übersicht des Vorkommens vom Zooplankton in der Zeit zwischen dem 28. juni, 1960 and dem 7. August 1961 im Süsswasser und im Brackwasser des Kaps Thompson, Alaska wird hier gegeben.Von den Sammlungen aus 10 Seen, 8 Lagunen and 111 Teichen sind 14 Spezies der Cladoceren and 38 Spezies der Copepoden (darunter 13 der Calanoiden, 11 der Cyclopoiden, und 14 der Harpacticoiden) unterschieden worden.Die männlichen der Daphnia middendorfliana werden hierin illustriert und die geographische Bedeutung erläutert. Two populations of Cyclops abyssorum tatricus studied in neighbouring alpine lakes in Tatra Mountains (southern Poland) differed in their life cycles. In the lake with planktivorous fishes, Cyclops was typically monocyclic, with highly synchronized reproduction during two winter months, while in the fishless lake its reproduction was asynchronous and continued for six months. Direct and indirect effects of fish predation on Cyclops life cycles are discussed.  相似文献

Summary In a study of four species of centropagid copepods, particularly Boeckella minuta Sars, occurring in south-east Queensland, Australia, body length was found to correlate with the rate of water renewal in the reservoir. Ravera & Tonolli's explanation for interpopulational differences in lengths of copepods has thus been confirmed. There was also a positive correlation between body length and egg number in ovigerous females.Sex ratio (females/males) increased with the rate of water renewal, this providing for relatively more females to be present when population numbers were smaller.
Zusammenfassung In einer Untersuchung von vier Spezies zentropagischer Kopepoden, besonders Boeckella minuta Sars, die sich bei Südostqueens-land, Australien, finden, wurde entdeckt, daß die Körperlänge mit dem Wassererneuerungsgrad in dem Reservoir in Beziehung steht. Ravera & Tonolli's Erklärung für die Verschiedenheiten in Körperlängen von Kopepoden zwischen der Bevölkerung ist, auf diese Weise, bestätigt worden. Es gab auch eine positive Wechselbeziehung zwischen der Körperlänge und der Anzahl Eier in eiertragenden Weibchen.Das Geschlechtsverhältnis (Weibchen/Männchen) wurde grösser mit dem Wassererneuerungsgrad, wodurch etwas mehr Weibchen anwesend Bind, wenn die Bevölkerungszahl kleiner war.

Two species of freshwater cyclopoid copepods, Cyclops scutifer Sars and Mesocyclops leuckarti (Claus), with different ecological requirements, coexist in three humic ponds near the timberline in boreal forests in south-central Norway. The life cycle in both species is basically regulated by complete depletion of oxygen during the long winter. There is a short period of reproduction in spring followed by a rapid development during summer and autumn to advanced instars, capable of diapause when oxygen depletion starts in early winter. Both species have an exclusive 1-yr cycle.The long winter under anoxic conditions is passed in diapause as large copepodids (late developmental instars) with usually no individuals left in the plankton.Even if co-occurring in the same habitats with similar life cycles, there is a temporal and spatial segregation.  相似文献

With minor exceptions, cisco (C. albula) in Lake Suomunjärvi fed on cladocerans and copepods. The food habits were different among two size classes of fish. The composition of cisco diet changed at different depths and times of the day, but the distribution of zooplankton was usually very similar in each period irrespective of the depth or diel period. Daphnia, Bosmina, Cyclops scutifer and Heterocope appendiculata were the main diet of cisco. Calculations of fish electivity indices showed that cisco selected usually large species of cladocerans and copepods and a small cladoceran, Bosmina coregoni. Body-size selection was clear for Daphnia and Bosmina.  相似文献

A helicopter survey was carried out on 56 water bodies in the Abisko mountains, Swedish Lapland, in August 1981. Water chemistry was found to be highly correlated with bedrock quality in the drainage area of the lakes. Low pH values (down to 5.1) appeared in the neighbourhood of sulphuric iron-ores. Natrium and chloride concentrations showed large scale patterns which can be explained by orographic rainfall. Biologically, northern high mountain conditions are reflected in species composition rather than in biomass or possibly in diversity. Small chrysomonades and dinoflagellates, as well as Keratella hiemalis and Cyclops scutifer characterize the most ‘arctic’ waters. A comparison with data from earlier investigations did not confirm expected signs of acidification.  相似文献

The zooplankton structure of large lakes (Noyon-Khol’, Shuram-Khol’, Borzu-Khol’, Many-Khol’, Kadysh, and Todzha) of the Todzha Depression has been studied. A comparison of the species composition, abundance, and biomass of zooplankton in the lakes was made. Rotifers have the largest species diversity: from 10 to 16 species, with Conochilus sp., Collotheca sp., Kellicottia longispina (Kellicott), and Asplanchna priodonta Gosse being the most abundant. Copepods are represented mostly by Arctodiaptomus paulseni (Sars), Eudiaptomus graciloides (Lilljeborg), Cyclops scutifer Sars, and Mesocyclops leuckarti Claus. Daphnia galeata Sars and Bosmina longispina Leydig are the dominant cladoceran species. It is shown that the zooplankton communities of the lakes in the Todzha Depression are characterized by a high degree of species composition similarity. Factors forming the taxonomic structure of pelagic zooplankton in the system of these lakes are displayed.  相似文献

Summary The periodic occurrence of summer/early autumn precipitation in the California annual grassland can result in the formation of early and late emerging cohorts of Erodium botrys and E. brachycarpum. The occurrence of early rainfall and the timing of such rainfall are highly variable from year to year. A series of field watering experiments in 1980–81 were used to simulate early emergence conditions that would result from significant rainfall (1 cm) occurring in mid-July, late August, and mid-September. Net reproduction was used to estimate fitness differentials between Erodium cohorts emerging in response to a watering treatment (early emerging cohorts) and Erodium cohorts emerging with the onset of winter rains in mid-October (late emerging cohorts). Survival was lower and gross reproduction was higher among early emerging cohorts than late emerging cohorts. For both species, net reproduction of the early cohort was lower than that of the late cohort under the July watering treatment and higher than that of the late cohort under the August watering treatment.Early cohorts, formed in response to rainfall in mid-September, 1982, were also compared demographically to later cohorts emerging in October. Compared to late cohorts, net reproduction, gross reproduction and survival were higher for the early cohorts.Common garden experiments indicate that differences in the duration of seed dormancy between the progenies of early and late emerging plants reflect a significant genetic component. Progency produced by early cohorts of E. brachycarpum from all three watering treatments possessed more extended seed dormancy than progeny of late cohorts. In E. botrys, progeny from early cohorts emerging in response to the July watering treatment were also more dormant than late progeny. In contrast, early cohorts of E. botrys emerging in response to the September watering treatment produced seed less dormant than seed produced by late cohorts. When combined with demographic data, indicating that fitness differentials between early and late cohorts varied with changes in the date of early emergence, genetic results suggest that year to year variation in early rainfall may act to retain genetic variation in the duration of seed dormancy.  相似文献

Selective predation by planktivore fish appears to be an important regulatory factor of zooplankton communities, potentially causing large changes in species composition and size distributions within populations. In this study, prey preferences and size-selective predation on zooplankton by Arctic charr were examined in six subarctic lakes with Arctic charr as the dominant pelagic fish species. Most of the lakes had a zooplankton community dominated by copepods (Cyclops scutifer and Eudiaptomus graciloides), but the pelagic charr evidently selected cladoceran species (Bythotrephes longimanus, Daphnia sp. and Bosmina sp.), likely because the copepods have a higher mobility and evasiveness than the cladocerans. Furthermore, a strong size selection was also revealed for both Bosmina sp. and Daphnia sp., as individual prey from Arctic charr stomachs were exclusively larger than individuals sampled in the environment. Additionally, visibility due to size, morphology and pigmentation (egg-carrying females) was also a major factor for the selection of zooplankton prey. In conclusion, Arctic charr was found to be highly selective on zooplankton both in respect to species composition and individual size of Bosmina sp. and Daphnia sp.  相似文献

  • 1 Adjacent populations of the copepod Cyclops scutifer Sars living in lakes in southern Norway exhibit remarkably different life cycles. A series of laboratory-common environment experiments were used to partition variance in one life cycle trait—time to metamorphosis—among and within five populations of C. scutifer, to examine the extent to which variation in this trait has a generic basis and to test whether populations are polymorphic for development rates. The experimental populations exhibit a variety of life cycles in the field and occupy environments that represent a broad range of conditions.
  • 2 Populations with different life cycles in the field continued to express differences in time to metamorphosis in the laboratory, indicating a genetic contribution to life cycle variation. Differences in developmental rates in the laboratory were smaller, however, than differences observed in the field, suggesting that environmental conditions also contribute to observed life cycle variation.
  • 3 In addition to interpopulation variation, each population maintained substantial intrapopulation variation in time to metamorphosis; differences between individuals from the same population were often as large as or larger than differences between populations.
  • 4 Individual females in most populations produced highly variable offspring, and there often was little difference in time to metamorphosis among families within a population.
  • 5 Cyclops scutifer exhibits a hierarchy of variation in time to metamorphosis, with a major portion of this variation expressed among siblings. Intrapopulation life history variation important to natural selection may be maintained by different processes among the major groups of freshwater zooplankton.

We investigated sexual reproduction patterns of a ubiquitous littoral cladoceran Alonella nana (Anomopoda, Chydoridae), using ecological and paleoecological approaches to clarify the forcing mechanisms behind its sexual reproduction. Contemporary sampling of A. nana populations in two environmentally different lakes showed abundant sexual reproduction in the lake with eutrophic, oxygen-deficient conditions and scarce gamogenesis in the oligotrophic, well-oxygenated lake. Sediment core studies from the same lakes indicated that comparable sexual reproduction patterns had prevailed for many centuries. However, in eutrophic Lake Hamptr?sk, A. nana increased its sexual reproduction from 1700 ad onward, consistently with decreasing trend in chironomid-inferred oxygen. The core samples, together with a surface sediment dataset of 25 lakes from southern and central Finland, showed a negative correlation between ephippia of A. nana and winter oxygen, although the surface sediment data per se did not show any significant correlation. When the dataset was scaled locally to include lakes in close proximity in southern Finland, the correlation became clearer. The results imply that the spatial and temporal variations in sexual reproduction of A. nana populations may partly be explained by differences in oxygen levels.  相似文献

A seasonal cycle longer than one year is exceptional both among marine and freshwater zooplankton, but occurs widely in the freshwater cyclopoid Cyclops scutiferSars. This paper presents the life cycle of this species in eight North American populations in lakes from 42° to 69° N. Five of the populations had life cycles showing a combination of a one and two year cycle. Two populations had a 1-year cycle, and the southernmost had a combination of a 0.5-year and a 1-year cycle. Lengths of cycles increased with latitude and thus inversely with the temperature. Populations in all lakes were divided into a direct and a delayed line of development. Diapause was not documented in any of the lakes.  相似文献

Growth, density, survival, and reproduction were examined for the population of the ghost shrimp, Callianassa japonica Ortmann, inhabiting an intertidal sandflat in western Kyushu, Japan, based on samples collected from May, 1989 to April, 1991. During the breeding season (June–October) each year, there were two discrete periods of egg production by females. The post-larval settlement, with a time-lag of 1–1.5 months (brooding plus larval developmental periods), generated two major recruitment cohorts, occurring in July–August (1st cohort) and September–November (2nd cohort). The higher growth rate of individuals after recruitment in the 1st cohort enhanced the separation of the two cohorts. Between sexes, the subsequent life history patterns and population characteristics were, for the most part, similar. In females, the majority of individuals of each of the two cohorts matured after approximately one year, respectively, at around a 20-mm total body length, and a portion of these cohorts survived as a fused cohort until June of the second year, breeding again prior to dying off by the end of September. The pattern of growth was an indeterminate type. For each of the two cohorts, the growth rates changed at two transition points of their life history, at around the beginning of their two breeding seasons. The growth rate for the 1st cohort slowed down at the first transition point, while that for the 2nd cohort speeded up there. This led to the approach and fusion of the two cohorts near the second transition point, when growth stopped. During periods other than the breeding seasons, high survival rates were exhibited by the two cohorts. During the first breeding season, a significantly low survival rate was observed for the 1st cohort, but not for the 2nd cohort. The degree of participation in breeding activity may be responsible for the above differences between cohorts. In the two male cohorts, while the cost of reproduction did not reduce the growth rates during the first breeding season, it lowered their survival rates more severely compared to those of females. This may be responsible for the slightly female-biased sex ratio in the population (1.06:1). The density of the population as a whole was stable throughout the study period, with the mean ± SD being 901 ± 157/m2 (n = 27); the adult population declines during the breeding seasons were effectively replenished by recruitment each year.  相似文献

Summary Culture conditions were evaluated for their relevance to chemical and biological oxidation of sulphide in aqueous solution. With a mixed culture of colourless sulphur bacteria sulphide oxidation was investigated over a concentration range of 0.005 to 3.5 mm S2–, a pH range from 1.0 to 9.0 and temperatures from 10 to 40° C. Biological sulphide oxidation quickly decreased when fermentation conditions were suboptimal and the proportion of chemical oxidation increased with high pH values and sulphide concentration and increasing temperature. An enclosure study was conducted in Ranger Lake in south-central Ontario, Canada from 4 July to 5 August 1997 to determine predation effects of the larvae of the phantom midge fly Chaoboruson the zooplankton community. Zooplankton assemblages were established in 12 enclosures (2 m in diameter, 7.5 m deep). Three densities of fourth-instar Chaoborus trivittatus (0 l–1, 0.1 l–1 and 0.5 l–1) were introduced as predator treatments to the enclosures. Temperature, dissolved oxygen and zooplankton community composition were monitored for six weeks. To determine if the zooplankton community composition changed, a repeated measures multivariate analysis was performed on percent biomass of Bosmina and calanoid copepods. There were no significant differences in mean taxon percent biomass among predator treatments. There were significant differences in mean taxon percent biomass between water layers (epilimnion and metalimnion). There were also significant differences in lengths of Bosmina and calanoid copepods among predator treatments at the end of the experiment. Crop content analysis of C. trivittatusshowed that Bosmina constituted 88–98% of the prey items found in the crops. These results demonstrate that the use of deep enclosures, a Chaoborus species which vertically migrates, and lower natural densities of Chaoborus may provide prey with an important natural refuge from predation and so allow a more accurate determination of the predation impact of Chaoborus trivittatusin temperate lakes where fish control Chaoborus densities.  相似文献

From a monthly survey over a ten-year period (1983–1992) of the Ishitegawa Reservoir, Japan, two multiple regression equations describing the mean chlorophylla (Chl-a) concentration at 0.5 m depth during July, August and September (C S ) and the maximum Chl-a concentration in the photic zone, including its subsurface maximum during this period (C M ), were obtained. The conductivity at 0.5 m depth in May and the mean air temperature during May or during May and June were used as independent variables. These equations were calculated using seven years of data (1983–1988 and 1992). From 1989 to 1991 two impermeable plastic-coated sheet fences were installed across the upper end of the reservoir along the top 5 m of water column. The equations were used to determine the effectiveness of this flow regulation on the summer Chl-a concentration. In 1989 and 1991, when the fences were in place from June to August, no effects were found on the observed C S and C M values. In 1990, when the fences had been in place since October 1989, the observed values were lower than the predicted values.  相似文献

The introduced population of Gambusia holbrooki from the rice fields of the lower Mondego River Valley, Portugal, was studied for 15 months, relating their life cycle and population dynamics with its production, in order to assess the role of the species in the energy flow and secondary production in this type of agro-ecosystem. Two main annual cohorts (1995 and 1996 cohorts) were identified. The females outnumbered males and the average female/male-ratio was 4. The inspection of ovary developmental stages of this viviparous fish, revealed that the most important reproductive period was between April and August. The first recruits were recorded in June and were present thereafter until October. Males from the parental cohort died before August, whereas parental females could survive until October. Mean adjusted fecundity (number of embryos divided by female standard length) peaked in July 1996 (0.95) and in June 1997 (1.05). Females reached greater sizes, had a higher growth rate and lived longer than males. Annual production was estimated at 3.101 g.m–2.year–1 (ash-free dry weight, AFDW), the average biomass at 2.896 g.m–2 (AFDW), and the P/B ratio was 1.071. A conjugation of life history, population dynamics, production and ecological traits (e.g. fast growth, reduced longevity, viviparity, high productivity, an intermediate position in food chain, and no special habitat requirements for reproduction) clearly show that the populations of G. holbrooki, introduced into rice fields all over the world, may play an important role in the structure and functioning of the biological communities of these important agro-ecosystems.  相似文献

Populations of the copepod Cyclops vicinus in two Danish lakes differed in their life cycles. In Lake Væng C. vicinus was absent during summer, whereas in Lake Søbygård it continued producing distinct cohorts throughout summer. A comparison between the lakes showed that in the lake where C. vicinus was absent during summer, food limitation generally existed. In contrast, abundance of C. vicinus during summer in Lake Søbygård always coincided with available resources sufficient for the whole life cycle. Thus, summer diapause of C. vicinus is suggested to be a strategy to avoid food limitation. Avoidance of fish predation does not seem substantially to influence life cycles.  相似文献

Laboratory investigations with Cyclops vicinus and Metacyclops minutus documented that mating frequency decreased significantly after the initial mating, i.e. re-mating is relatively rare in cyclopoid copepods. Re-mating is unnecessary because females are able to fertilize multiple clutches of viable eggs from one insemination. Similar sized Cyclops vicinus and Cyclops furcifer interbreed frequently. Interbreeding does not occur when size differences and taxonomic differences are as great as between C. vicinus and M. leuckarti. In C. vicinus and M. leuckarti, the duration of the last mating phase (spermatophore transfer until release of the female) and consequently the duration of the entire mating process, is different. I conclude that the low re-mating frequency in cyclopoid copepods probably evolved to accelerate clutch production in unpredictable environments and to reduce predation risk. The occurrence of interspecific mating discourages the co-existence of similarly sized, related species. Mating behaviour may have a considerable influence on zooplankton community structure.  相似文献
