The bathyergid mole-rats provide a unique example of a family of subterranean rodents exhibiting a broad spectrum of sociality. Three genera comprise solitary, strongly territorial individuals whereas two genera are social. This sociality culminates in the eusocial naked mole-rat, Heterocephalus glaber . The pups of solitary mole-rats disperse, establish and thereafter defend their own burrow systems when approximately two months old, whereas those of social genera join an established natal colony. This paper examines whether these different lifestyles are reflected in the early development and rate of growth of pups of mole-rats.
Although the trends are not clear-cut, it is apparent that the pups of solitary genera grow and mature more rapidly than those from social genera. Thus, the growth rate constant ( K ) for the first70–80 days of postnatal growth (using the Gompertz equation) for the solitary genera was between 0.042 and 0.052 day−1, whereas that of the social mole-rats was considerably lower (0.01 5 day−1). Similarly the mean growth rates of solitary genera ranged between 3.3 and 1.227g/day while those of the social mole-rats were 0.229-0.233 g/day.
The pattern of development and the rates of growth in solitary bathyergids are similar to those of other solitary subterranean rodents. One interesting feature common to all the social genera studied to date was that the first pups recruited to a 'new colony', consisting of a reproductive pair of adult mole-rats, grew at a significantly faster rate than pups born to an established colony.  相似文献

Buildings with poor indoor air quality (IAQ) frequently have many areas with surface fungal contamination. Studies have demonstrated that certain fungal genera (e.g., Cladosporium, Penicillium, and Stachybotrys) are able to grow on building materials such as wallpaper, drywall, and ceiling tiles, particularly after water damage has occurred. Due to the increasing awareness of sick building syndrome (SBS), it has become essential to identify building materials that prevent the interior growth of fungi. The objective of this study was to identify building materials that would not support the growth of certain fungal genera, regardless of whether an external food source was made available. The growth of three fungal genera (Cladosporium, Penicillium, and Stachybotrys) was evaluated on cellulose-containing ceiling tile (CCT) and inorganic ceiling tile (ICT). Both types of ceiling tile were exposed to environmental conditions which can occur inside a building. Our results show that ICT did not support the growth of these three fungal genera while CCT did. Our data demonstrate that ICT could serve as an ideal replacement for CCT. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Antifungal activity of micelial fungus metabolites (of genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, Fusarium, Stachybotris, Cladosporium, Alternaria, Gliocladium, Paecilomyces, Trichoderma etc.) was determined. It was shown that antifungal activity of some micromycetes is due to the formation of substances inhibiting sterols biosynthesis in eucaryote cells. Inhibitors of enzymes of sterols biosynthesis were isolated and their activity was investigated. It was shown, that isolated fungus inhibitors of sterols biosynthesis inhibited the growth of test-organism Rhodotorula rubra and decreased ergosterin level in yeast cells. The qualitative content of yeast cell sterols was not changed in the presence of fungus inhibitors.  相似文献

通过城市生活垃圾堆肥基质草坪建植体系接种草坪土壤线虫,研究了线虫数量、科属分类、营养类群等线虫多样性变化.结果表明,接种草坪土壤线虫 4 个月后,垃圾堆肥基质中共鉴定出线虫4科7属,包括植物寄生性线虫、食真菌线虫和食细菌线虫3个营养类群;垃圾堆肥基质草坪建植体系中线虫总数明显少于土壤基质.在接种草坪线虫的土壤基质草坪建植体系中,植物寄生线虫为优势营养类群,盘旋线虫属仍为优势属,相对多度达到83.3%,显著高于本底土壤45.1%.在接种草坪土壤线虫的垃圾堆肥基质草坪建植体系中,土壤本底中处于优势属的植物寄生类线虫如盘旋线虫属和螺旋线虫属基本消失了,表明垃圾堆肥基质对植物寄生类群的生长与繁殖表现出明显的抑制作用,优势属也发生了很大变化,食细菌类群的头叶属和丽突属成为优势属,相对多度分别为67.0%和14.0%.因此,从草坪土壤线虫危害角度来说,以垃圾堆肥作为草坪基质将会为草坪植物生长创造良好的基质环境.  相似文献

Observation of ovulate cones at the time of pollination in the southern coniferous family Podocarpaceae demonstrates a distinctive method of pollen capture, involving an extended pollination drop. Ovules in all genera of the family are orthotropous and single within the axil of each fertile bract. In Microstrobus and Phyllocladus ovules are erect (i.e., the micropyle directed away from the cone axis) and are not associated with an ovule-supporting structure (epimatium). Pollen in these two genera must land directly on the pollination drop in the way usual for gymnosperms, as observed in Phyllocladus. In all other genera, the ovule is inverted (i.e., the micropyle is directed toward the cone axis) and supported by a specialized ovule-supporting structure (epimatium). In Saxegothaea there is no pollination drop and gametes are delivered to the ovule by pollen tube growth. Pollination drops were observed in seven of the remaining genera. In these genera the drop extends over the adjacent bract surface or cone axis and can retain pollen that has arrived prior to drop secretion (“pollen scavenging”). The pollen floats upward into the micropylar cavity. The configuration of the cone in other genera in which a pollination drop has not yet been observed directly suggests that pollen scavenging is general within the family and may increase pollination efficiency by extending pollination in space and time. Increased pollination efficiency may relate to the reduction of ovule number in each cone, often to one in many genera, a derived condition. A biological perspective suggests that animal dispersal of large seeds may be the ultimate adaptive driving force that has generated the need for greater pollination efficiency.  相似文献

The Asteridae is one of the most successful clades of flowering plants comprising some 80,000 species. Despite this diversity, analysis of seeds from 398 species (representing 8 orders, 32 families and 181 genera) showed just two major types of serine proteinase inhibitors (PI). PIs of the potato inhibitor I family were widely distributed. These had M(r) of 7000-7500 and were inhibitory to subtilisin and one or more other proteinases (but only rarely elastase). The second major group was TI related to the well-characterised Bowman-Birk inhibitors of legume seeds but these varied widely in their sequences and structure. In addition to these two groups of inhibitors, seeds of the Solanaceae also often contained PI of the potato inhibitor II family while some other asterids contained inhibitors whose relationships were not established.  相似文献

Steroid sulfatase (STS) regulates the formation of active steroids from systemic precursors, such as estrone sulfate and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS). In breast tissues, this pathway is a source for local production of estrogens, which support the growth of endocrine-dependent tumours. Therefore, inhibitors of STS could have therapeutic potential. In this study, we report on substituted chromenone sulfamates as a novel class of non-steroidal irreversible inhibitors of STS. The compounds are substantially more potent (6- to 80-fold) than previously described types of non-steroidal inhibitors when tested against purified STS. In MCF-7 breast cancer cells, they inhibit STS activity with IC50 below 100 pM. Importantly, the compounds also potently block estrone sulfate-stimulated growth of MCF-7 cells, again with IC50 below 100 pM. For one compound, we also observed a lack of any estrogenic effect at high concentrations (1 μM). We also demonstrate for the first time that STS inhibitors can block the DHEAS-stimulated growth of MCF-7 cells. Interestingly, this cannot be achieved with specific inhibitors of the aromatase, suggesting that stimulation of MCF-7 cell growth by DHEAS follows an aromatase-independent pathway. This gives further justification to consider steroid sulfatase inhibitors as potential drugs in the therapy of breast cancer.  相似文献

Summary A guild of cellular slime molds (CSM) consisting of two isolates from each of five species, representing two genera, and obtained from the same square meter of forest soil exhibited extensive growth rate variation when tested on a suite of 18 bacteria isolated from the same soil. Significant growth rate differences were found at each taxonomic level examined: among species of different genera, between genera, among species within genera, and between isolates (=clones) within species. The type of bacteria used as prey determined the relative rank of the growth rates in different CSM isolates, as well as the taxonomic level at which significant differences were found. We suggest a possible reconciliation between a previous hypothesis, based on competition, and contradictory experimental work on resource partitioning in this guild of bacterial predators. Our results raise a question about the efficacy of using single genotypes to represent a species when ecological ideas are developed through laboratory investigations.  相似文献

Axon growth inhibitors associated with myelin play an important role in the failure of axon regeneration in the adult mammalian central nervous system (CNS). Several inhibitors are present in the mature CNS. We now present a novel therapeutic vaccine approach in which the animals' own immune system is stimulated to produce polyclonal antibodies that block myelin-associated inhibitors without producing any detrimental cellular inflammatory responses. Adult mice immunized in this manner showed extensive regeneration of large numbers of axons of the corticospinal tracts after dorsal hemisection of the spinal cord. The anatomical regeneration led to recovery of certain hind limb motor functions. Furthermore, antisera from immunized mice were able to block myelin-derived inhibitors and promote neurite growth on myelin in vitro.  相似文献

Soil mycofloral diversity plays a pivotal role in crop production and is an integral part of any ecosystem. Pigeonpea cropping system provides a congenial environment to soil microbes by fixing nitrogen and solubilizing phosphorus which in turn provides sufficient nutrients for their prolific growth. The present study was undertaken to know the fungal diversity in calcareous soil of Bihar region in India, which are not supportive to growth of many fungi owing to high calcium content. Soil samples were collected from pigeonpea cropping system treated with native and commercial isolates of phosphorus solubilizing bacteria (PSB) and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) along with Rhizobium. Thirty-seven species belonging to seven genera and a group of unidentified species were isolated. Aspergillus and Penicillium were the dominant genera in all the treatments. Absidia and Cunnighmella were distributed only once as rare genera. Though single species of Pythium, Rhizopus, Periconia, Geotrichum and Gliocladium genera were recorded but their occurrence was even in all the treatments. The diversity and equitability index were not varied much in different treatments except one. The deuteromucetous fungi occupied the highest space followed by zygomycetous, mycelia sterilia and mastigomycetous fungi.  相似文献

Multiple molecular forms of inhibitors of trypsin (TI) and chymotrypsin (CI), which are typical digestive enzymes of insects, mammals and micro-organisms, and subtilisin (SI), a proteinase of many bacteria and phytopathogenic fungi, were identified in seeds and vegetative organs of the majority of 128 wild and cultivated species representing 65 genera of three of the subfamilies of the Compositae. Inhibitors with M(r) ranging from 7450 to 7800 and combining activities towards subtilisin and trypsin and/or chymotrypsin (T/C/SI) had the widest distribution and may be involved in plant defense mechanisms. They were found in many species of the subfamilies Carduoideae (genera Carthamus, Centaurea, Cirsium), Cichorioideae (Lactuca, Taraxacum) and Asteroideae (Helianthus, Cosmos, Bidens). Partial amino acid sequencing showed that the safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) T/C/SI and Cosmos bipinnatus T/C/SI, T/SI and C/SI belonged to the potato I inhibitor family. The most active, variable and heterogeneous inhibitors were found in species of the tribe Heliantheae, which is placed in the evolutionary advanced subfamily Asteroideae. Seeds of Helianthus species, Eclipta prostrata, Gailardia aristata, Zinnia elegans and Silphium perfoliatum contained various TI with M(r) ranging from 1500 to 14,750, with some also containing SI. H. annuus seeds contain a unique cyclic TI of M(r) 1514 and similar TI were also present in other Helianthus spp. and the related species Tithonia diversifolia. Zinnia elegans contained a TI with M(r) 11,350 which appeared to represent a novel type of inhibitor distantly related to the cereal subgroup of Bowman-Birk inhibitors. TI and T/SI varied widely in H. annuus lines and wild Helianthus species in their presence or absence and composition. Similar T/SI components were found in the cultivated diploid H. annuus and annual diploid species with the B genome but not in perennials with the A genome. Some T/SI, SI and TI were detected in vegetative organs of sunflower and other Compositae. Studies of the polymorphism and distribution of proteinase inhibitors are relevant to the evolution of protective protein systems and the mechanisms of resistance to pathogenic organisms in the Compositae and other plants.  相似文献

Phanerozoic marine genera apparently do not become less extinction-prone with age. Higher extinction probability in "young" cohorts of genera is better explained by initially different levels of extinction-tolerance of genera in the cohort. This fact agrees with one of the two basic statements of the "Red Queen" hypothesis (Van Valen, 1973). In the second statement (the idea that the increase in fitness lowers extinction probability) the term "fitness" should be changed to "adaptability". The increase of extinction-tolerance, that can be interpreted as the increase of adaptability to unpredictable changes of environment, is found in succession of "generations" of genera that replace one another through time. This increase reveals itself, firstly, in the growth of mean duration of genera, as well as in the decrease of extinction/origination rates, gradual accumulation of long-lived genera and origination of genera with higher duration. The increase of adaptability may be caused by selective extinction of stenotopic, ecologically specialized forms; Cope's law; evolution of ecosystems that involves development of more effective mechanisms of sustaining homeostasis which may stimulate the recovery of a genus after partial extinction.  相似文献

The large mistletoe family, Loranthaceae, contains 75 genera, three of which are terrestrial root parasites. The remaining 72 genera are aerial parasites. Four basic haustorial system types are found in aerial genera: epicortical roots (ERs), wood roses, clasping unions and bark strands. The focus of this report is on genera in which ERs are present. Presence of ERs is based on our worldwide collection of haustoria and from literature sources. Our collections include 78% of all aerial genera and 72% of genera with ERs. Collections were analyzed using comparative morphological methods. Of the 72 aerial genera 40 (56%) have ERs and 75% of these are Old World. ERs are the most common haustorial type for Loranthaceae on every major landmass except Africa. Three ER types are described, basal, cauline and adventitious. Basal and adventitious ERs occur in both the Old and New World, whereas cauline ERs are exclusively New World. Adventitious ERs form in a few species in response to injury or epiparasitism. Significant differences occur between basal and cauline ERs in the extent and pattern of elongation, frequency of lateral root formation, and production of haustoria and shoots. Three patterns of axis extension of ERs are recognized, the monochasial sympodium, dichasial sympodium and monopodium. Marked differences in patterns of axis elongation occur between the Old and New World genera analyzed. In Old World taxa 94% of lateral roots contributed to a monochasial sympodium, whereas in New World taxa 84% of root extension was monopodial. Two strategies of resource procurement occur in genera with ERs; the “phalanx” strategy is found in species with basal ERs only, the “guerilla” strategy in New World species with cauline ERs. Species with ERs have the potential for clonal growth through fragmentation of stems, ERs, or both, but the extent of clonal growth in nature is unknown. The large number and wide distribution of genera with ERs add support to the hypothesis that the presence of ERs is an ancestral trait for aerial Loranthaceae.  相似文献

The effect of NaCl on the growth rates and yields of 31 gram-negative, heterotrophic, marine bacteria was determined. The strains used were representative of aerobic genera (Alteromonas, Pseudomonas, Alcaligenes, Bdellovibrio) as well as genera comprised of facultative anaerobes (Beneckea, Photobacterium). Two media were used-the first, a medium designed for the cultivation of marine bacteria and, the second, a medium used for the cultivation of terrestrial strains. These two media differed in the concentrations of divalent cations; the terrestrial medium (TM) contained 2 mM Mg++ and 0.55 mM Ca++ while the marine medium (MM) contained 50 mM Mg++ and 10 mM Ca++. The amount of NaCl necessary for optimal growth varied in different strains and was usually considerably higher in TM (100 to 460 mM) than in MM (70 to 300 mM). Many strains which grew in MM and TM had a shorter generation time in the former than in the latter medium. In addition, four strains which grew well in MM usually failed to grow in TM. These results show that higher levels of divalent cations are either essential for growth or stimulate growth rate, indicating that for many marine strains a terrestrial medium modified by the addition of NaCl cannot support optimal growth. Fourteen terrestrial strains of the genera Pseudomonas, Alcaligenes, Acinetobacter, Salmonella, Aeromonas, and Vibrio did not have ionic requirements comparable to those of the marine strains. All of the terrestrial organisms grew in TM without added NaCl (0.068 mM Na+ was present as a contaminant). In some terrestrial organisms, growth was stimulated by the addition of NaCl, the highest stimulation being found in Vibrio cholerae. The optimal growth rates and yields for four strains of this species were observed at 2.5 to 5.0 mM NaCl while the growth rates and yields in TM with no added NaCl were 40 to 50% of the optimum.  相似文献

Tobramycin and dioxidine sensitivity of 57 strains belonging to 14 actinomycetes genera was studied. The cultures of Streptomyces were much more sensitive to tobramycin than the cultures of rare genera. The majority of the Streptomyces cultures showed a high resistance to dioxidine (MIC greater than or equal to 50 micrograms/ml). At the same time the majority of the cultures of rare genera were inhibited by low concentrations of dioxidine (no more than 50 micrograms/ml). For isolation of actinomycetes from soil samples, tobramycin, dioxidine, ceftriaxone and novobiocin were used. Tobramycin added in a concentration of 10 micrograms/ml to the Gauze agar organic medium No. 2 promoted a 2-fold increase in detection of actinomycetes of the rare genera as compared to the control. It was especially favourable for detection of cultures belonging to Micromonospora, Amycolatopsis, Streptosporangium and Nocardiopsis. Dioxidine in concentrations of 10 and 50 micrograms/ml inhibited the growth of the cultures belonging to rare genera. Ceftriaxone in the same concentrations inhibited the growth of the cultures of both Streptomyces and the rare genera. Novobiocin favoured detection of the cultures belonging to Amicolatopsis and Micromonospora. Therefore, among the tested compounds tobramycin and novobiocin appeared to be the most useful selective agents for isolation of actinomycetes of rare genera.  相似文献

Summary In uninucleate cells, cytokinesis follows karyokinesis, thereby reestablishing a specific nucleus-to-cytoplasm ratio. In multinucleate cells, cytokinesis is absent or infrequent; no plasmalemma boundary defines the cytoplasmic territory of an individual nucleus. Several genera of large multinucleate green algae were examined with epifluorescence light microscopy to determine whether the patterns of cytoplasmic organization establish nuclear cytoplasmic domains. Randomly spaced nuclei, singular mitotic events and cytoplasmic streaming characterize the organization of two genera,Derbesia andBryopsis (Caulerpales). The cells ofValonia, Valoniopsis, Boergesenia, Ventricaria (Siphonocladales), andHydrodictyon (Chlorococcales) display regularly spaced nuclei which undergo synchronous divisions in a stationary cytoplasm. In the cytoplasm of genera with regularly spaced nuclei, microtubules radiate from all nuclei in late telophase-early interphase. These internuclear microtubule arrays are not found in algal genera with randomly spaced nuclei. It is hypothesized that these microtubule arrays play a role in establishing the cytoplasmic domain of each nucleus in genera with regularly spaced nuclei. Loss of microtubule arrays during the events of mitosis correlated positively with the increasing randomization of nuclear patterns in algae grown in microtubule inhibitors. Cytoplasmic domains were maintained when cells were grown in the same media in the dark. This suggests that, after a round of division, regular nuclear spacing in certain multinucleate algae is reestablished by internuclear microtubule arrays, which are not, however, required to maintain spacing during interphase.Dedicated to the memory of Professor Oswald Kiermayer  相似文献

Histologically distinct lung tumor and normal cell lines were treated with a variety of potential inhibitors of cell growth such as inducers of cell differentiation, inhibitors of protein kinase C and inhibitors of tumor promotion. The response was assessed by 3H thymidine incorporation and cloning efficiency. Both phorbol retinoate acetate and mezerein stimulated growth in lung normal cell lines (human fibroblastic PEH cells and rat epithelial TP9 cells) while inhibiting growth in lung tumor cell lines (human small-cell cancer-derived cell line IRSC-10M and adenocarcinoma-derived cell line A549). Likewise, the hydrophobic peptide melittin did not inhibit growth and cloning efficiency of normal cells at 1 microM, a concentration which prevented proliferation in tumor cells. Protein kinase C inhibitors, chlorpromazine, trifluoperazine and 1-(5 isoquinolinylsulfonyl) 2-methylpiperazine, were much more effective on proliferation of IRSC-1OM than of A549 cells. In contrast, the latter cells were more susceptible to anti-promoters such as glycyrrhetic acid, an anti-inflammatory agent, and 3,4',2', 4'-tetrahydroxychalcone or 2,3,5-trimethyl-6 (12-hydroxy-5,10-dodecadiynyl)-1,4-benzoquinone, two inhibitors of lipoxygenase, a key enzyme in arachidonate metabolism. Our results provide evidence that small-cell carcinoma-derived cells, in contrast with adenocarcinoma-derived cells, are growth-inhibited by protein kinase C inhibitors and poorly dependent on the arachidonate metabolism. This difference in responsiveness suggests that different growth signalling pathways are preferentially triggered in these histologically distinct lung tumor cell lines. As a consequence, the proper susceptibility of tumor cells to phenotype modifiers has to be taken into account in cancer therapy.  相似文献
