Perianth MP, gynoecium MG, and androecium MA dry-weight biomass(in g) of 39 species of perfect flowers was measured. Thesedata were pooled with published data from an additional 51 speciesand used to determine size-dependent variations in (MG and MA)in terms of the hypothesis that the quotient of MG and MA exceeds1·0 for out-breeding (xenogamous) species and less than1·0 for in-breeding (autogamous) species. Ordinary leastsquare regression of the pooled data (n = 90) showed MG = 0·118M0·916P (r2 = 0·884) and MA = 0·186 M0·975P(r2 = 0·865), indicating that the biomass of the gynoeciumproportionally decrease as floral size increases. The exponentsof these regressions indicate that the ratio of gynoecial toandroecial biomass decreased with increasing floral size suchthat comparatively small flowers (MP < 0·0021 g) hadMG/MA > 1·0 (predicted for 'out-breeders') while comparativelylarger flowers (MP > 0·0021 g) had MG /MA < 1·0(predicted for 'in-breeders'). Thus, on average, the type ofbreeding system was a size-dependent phenomenon. To test whether the biomass of a floral organ-type is a legitimateindicator of gender reproductive effort, the biomass (in g)of stamen filaments Mm and anther sacs MAS of 39 species wasdetermined. Least square regression of these data showed MAS= 0·188 M0·854fil (r2 = 0·967), indicatingthat species with larger stamen filaments, on the average, boreproportionally smaller anther sacs and thereby cautioning againstthe uncritical use of the allocation of biomass to floral organ-typeas a strict gauge of gender-function investment. To determine whether the loss of one gender-function resultsin proportional reallocation of biomass to the remaining gender-function,the size-dependency of androecial and gynoecial biomass wasdetermined for a total of 33 perfect and imperfect flowers ofCucumis melo. Regression of the data obtained from perfect flowersyielded MA = 0·402 M1·47P (r2 = 0·898)and MG = 4·63 M1·36P (r2 = 0·842). SinceMG/MA M0·11P , the biomass allocation to the gynoeciumrelative to the androecium decreased with increasing floralsize. This result was consistent with the broad interpecificcomparison based on 90 species with perfect flowers . Regressionof the data for imperfect flowers yielded MA = 0·151M1·02P (r2 = 0·675) and MG = 4·68 M1·47P(r2 = 0·996), indicating a near allometric relation forthe androecium and a strong positive anisometry for the gynoecium. Thus, for flowers of comparable size, a loss of female genderobtains a modest to significant again in androecial biomasswhereas the loss of male gender yields only a slight increasein gynoecial biomass. Collectively, the results of these studies indicate that biomassallocation patterns are size-dependent phenomena whose complexitieshave been largely ignored in the literature.Copyright 1993,1999 Academic Press Allometry, floral biomass, reproduction  相似文献

Sitka spruce[Picea sitchensis(Bong.) Carr] seedlings were subjectedto varying degrees of root damage in a growth room, rangingfrom careful transplanting to exposure of the root system toair for up to 3 h. After replanting, transpiration (E), leafwater potential (1) and growth of the shoot and root were measuredand observations made on plant survival. Some plants in the root exposure treatments died 20–85days after planting. In plants which eventually died, E wasdepressed directly after treatment, but 1 showed a variableresponse. In some plants 1 decreased from —8·0x 105 to —30 x 105 Pa after only 10 days but in othersthere was little change in 1 for 50 days. In spite of the maintenanceof a high water potential in some of the latter plants for longperiods, no root or shoot growth occurred. In plants which lived, the root damage reduced root and shootgrowth relative to untreated controls, and most treatments stronglydepressed E but had little or no effect on 1. The changes of E and 1 in treated plants suggest that the suppressionof E was often independent of 1 although water stress eventuallydeveloped in some of the severely treated plants. Although it is well established that the root growth in manyspecies is very sensitive to mechanical impedance or to confinementin small volumes, little is known about the consequent effectson growth of the whole plant and the mechanisms involved. Thiswork investigated the effects of root confinement on the waterrelations, growth and assimilate partitioning of tomato (Lycopersiconesculentum Mill) grown in solution culture. Six-week old plants were transferred to either 4500 ml or 75ml containers filled with nutrient solution, and allowed togrow for 14 d. Transpiration, leaf-air temperature differences, and leaf diffusive resistances were measured frequently. Leaf, stem and shoot dry masses, leaf area and root length, were estimatedwhen the treatments were imposed and at the end of the experiment. After 14 d growth the root and shoot hydraulic resistances wereestimated from measurements of leaf water potential and transpirationrate, using a steady-state technique. Confining root growth to the small containers substantiallyreduced shoot and root growth and increased the proportion oftotal dry matter present in the stems. These effects were dueto drought stress. The hydraulic resistance of the root systemwas greatest in the confined plants. This led to more negativeleaf water potentials, increased leaf diffusive resistance, and reduced the net assimilation rate by a factor of 2.5. Transpirationper unit leaf area was less affected. However, cumulative transpirationwas also reduced by a factor of 2.5. mostly because of the smallerleaf area on the confined plants. Root hydraulic resistivitywas measured at 3.1 x 1012s m–1 in the control treatment, but increased to 3.9 x 1012 s m–1 for roots in the smallcontainer. The mechanisms by which root confinement caused drought stressand disrupted the pattern of assimilate partitioning are discussedin detail. Significant differences in response to soil moisture stress(SMS) and restricted root zone volume (RRZV) were found in twocultivars of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] (‘Forrest’and ‘Williams’) plants grown under controlled-environmentconditions. Leaf water potentials of SMS-treated plants were0·4-0·6 MPa lower than those of controls and stomata1conductances 23-56% lower. In the case of RRZV treatment, however, there were no differences in either parameter. Initiation ofnew leaves as reflected in the plastochron index was stronglyreduced by SMS but was unaffected by RRZV. Photosynthetic rates(CO2 fixation dm2 of leaf) of plants given SMS were reducedby 11-21% while those of RRZV-treated plants were unaffected.SMS caused a strong preferential allocation of dry matter tothe root at the expense of the shoot in both cultivars. RRZV,however, had no effect on assimilate distribution in ‘Forrest’and only slightly favoured root growth in ‘Williams.’Carbohydrate concentrations of both alcohol-soluble and insolublefractions were increased significantly by SMS, especially inthe leaves, but were little affected by RRZV. Nitrogen concentrationin the root fraction was reduced by 22-24% and that in the leafand stem fractions by 7-14% under SMS but was not affected appreciablyby RRZV. Phosphorus concentration in the leaf, stem, and rootfractions was reduced by 45-65% under SMS but was relativelyunaffected by RRZV. These findings suggest that SMS and RRZVare basically different in their mechanism of action and thatthe impairment of growth resulting from these two stresses mayinvolve different physiological processes. Our results alsoindicate that the suppressive effects of small containers onplant growth do not necessarily result from inadvertent SMS. Key words: Drought, Container effects, Glycine max (L.) The roots of young plants of Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh.grown under simulated tidal conditions were harvested so asto obtain the entire root system. The roots were subdividedand weighed and subsamples taken for manometric determinationof respiration rates at different temperatures. The supply capacityof the above-ground portion of the root system was determinedand the results compared in terms of supply and demand. Theoxygen consumption rate of the roots at 15°C was found tobe 1·69±0·07 µmol kg–1 s–1for cable roots and 3·27±0·12 µmolkg–1 s–1 for fine roots. The Q10 for respirationwas 2·55 for oxygen consumption in both fine and cableroots, and for carbon dioxide production was 2·66 forfine roots and 3·04 for cable roots. The respiratoryquotient varied with temperature but was less than unity. Concentrationdifferences of between 1·8 mol m–3 and 3·4mol m–3 between the inside of root and the air were sufficientto permit aeration of the root system by diffusion alone, andthe aerenchyma contained sufficient oxygen to maintain aerobicconditions while the roots were covered with water. The effectof tide and seasonal temperature change on gas exchange, togetherwith the possibility of some form of carbon dioxide fixationwithin the root, are examined and the implications of theseeffects on growth and development are discussed. The effects of root age, temperature, and soil water statuson root hydraulic conductivity (LP) were investigated for twocactus species, Ferocactus acanthodes and Opuntia ficus-indica.The volumetric flux density of water was measured for excisedroot segments, either using negative hydrostatic pressures appliedto the proximal end or using reverse flow of water from theroot to the soil. For both species, LP at 20 ?C increased withroot age, average values reaching a maximum of 3.9 ? 10–7m s–1 MPa–1 for F. acanthodes and 5.2 ? 10–7m s–1 MPa–1 for O.ficus-indica at 11 to 17 weeksof age; LP subsequently declined with increasing root age forboth species. LP was maximal at a temperature of about 10 ?Cfor the youngest roots (1–3 weeks), this optimum shiftingto 40 ?C for 8-week-old roots of both species. For older roots(up to 1.5-years-old), LP increased with temperature from 0?C to 50 ?C, with a Q10 of 1.3 between 20 ?C and 30 ?C. At asoil water potential (soil) of –0.016 MPa, root LP wasindependent of the direction of water flow for both species.Depending on root age, LP declined 45- to 500-fold for F. acanthodesand 90- to 800-fold for O.ficus-indica as soil was reduced from–0.016 to –1.06 MPa, consistent with a rectifier-likebehaviour with respect to water movement between soil and roots.Incorporation of such responses into water uptake models shouldlead to a better understanding of root function. Two hydroponic experiments were conducted to determine the effectsof brief and prolonged AI3+ exposures on the hydraulic conductivity(Lp) of northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) root systems. RootLp was determined using the pressure chamber method of Fiscus(1977). In the first experiment, 28- to 40-d-old seedlings weretreated for 4 d with complete nutrient solutions containingone of three Al concentrations (0.04, 1.85 or 3.71 mol m–3)and either 0 or 50 mmol m–3 P. Neither Lp nor daily transpirationwas affected by treatment. In Experiment II, seedlings were grown for 48–63 d incomplete solutions containing one of three Al concentrations(0, 0.75 or 2.00 mol m–3) and either 10 or 250 mmol m–3Ca. Lp and leaf area to root length ratio (LA/RL) were reducedwhen (AI3+/ Ca2+), the solution activity ratio, was 2.9 andhigher. Lp and LA/RL were also negatively correlated with Alconcentration and Al/Ca concentration ratio in the roots. Lpwas positively correlated with LA/RL in both experiments. Itis unclear whether Lp in the second experiment was reduced directlyby solution and root chemistry or whether Lp changed in responseto altered leaf/root balance. Shoot Resistance to Water Flow in Cotton   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Studies using excised cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) plants, attached to a free water source and undergoing transpirationcycles, were conducted at intervals over a 2 year period inorder to quantify shoot resistance components of cotton canopies.Leaf water potential was found to be a linear function of transpirationrate at rates above 0.1 mm h–1, so shoot resistance wasevaluated as the slope of this function. The value of 4.8 104h (0.48 MPa h mm–1) total shoot resistance was consistentfor 1.10 m tall, well irrigated, fruit-bearing cotton plants.Further tests, with pre-wrapped and exposed leaves, revealedthat total shoot resistance was comprised of an axial component(40%) and a leaf component (60%). The total shoot resistanceof 0.48 MPa h mm–1 is likely to be relevant for modellingcotton water relations when LWP is evaluated on exposed, topof the canopy leaves, such as in the ‘big leaf’type models. The hypothesis that soil water potential (s) is better correlatedto heliotropic leaf orientation, photosaturated photosyntheticCO2 assimilation and stomatal conductance during periods oflimited water availability than is bulk leaf water potential(1) was examined in greenhouse-grown soybean (Glycine max) plants, submitted to a progressive drought. Paired plants were exposedto either 1000 or 100 µmol m–2 s–1 photonflux densities (PFD) for 45–60 mins. The higher irradianceinduced short-term decreases in 1, due to increased transpiration, while l in the plant exposed to low PFD did not decrease. Thesechanges in 1 occurred independently of changes in soil waterstatus. Concurrent to the light treatments, a single attachedleaf from each of the two plants was isolated from the restof the plant by shading, and the pulvinus of its terminal leafletwas exposed to a perpendicular PFD of 500 µmol m–2S–1. Leaf movement of this leaflet was recorded in responseto this light, until a stable leaflet angle was achieved. Valuesof s and l (before and after light treatment), and photosaturatedrates of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance, were thenmeasured on these leaves. Leaflet angle and gas exchange werebetter correlated with s (r2 = 0.50, 0.50 and 0.57 for angle, photosynthesis and conductance, respectively) than with l especiallywhen l was the result of short-term, high-light induced changesin leaf water status (r2 = 0.36, 0.32 and 0.49, for the sameparameters). Leaflet angle was also correlated with stomatalconductance (r2 = 0.61) and photosynthetic rate (r2 = 0.60),suggesting a close association between leaf orientation, leafmetabolism and soil water availability. Grain Size and Seedling Growth of Wheat at Different Ploidy Levels   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A study was made of the influence of grain size variation withinand between diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid wheat, on a numberof seedling growth characters. Differences in grain size within the three ploidy levels appearedto be related to total photosynthetic area and dry weight accretionin the seedling. In the diploids there was a positive correlationbetween seed size and total photosynthetic area (r = +0·99,P < 0·01) and total dry weight (r = +0·84,P < 0·05) of the seedling at 10 weeks after emergence. In the tetraploid and hexaploids, seed size was negatively correlatedwith both total photosynthetic area (r = –0·69,P < 0·05 and r = –0·33, P < 0·05for the tetraploids and hexaploids respectively) and total dryweight (r = –0·69, P < 0·05 and r = –0·59,P < 0·05 for the tetraploids and hexaploids respectively),of the seedlings 10 weeks after emergence. The main physiological distinction between the tetraploids andhexaploids appeared to be the superiority of the hexaploidsin rate of leaf appearance and the lower ratio of expanded tounexpanded leaves in the seedling 10 weeks after emergence. The tetraploids, in turn, appeared to be superior to the diploidsin these two characters. The present study deals with structure and functioning of threeareas of Himalayan oak forest. Low- and mid-altitude oaks, namelyQuercus leucotrichophora, and Quercus floribunda, form predominantevergreen forests in Central and Western Himalaya. The totaltree basal cover ranged between 33·89 m2 ha–1 (Q.floribunda site) to 36·83 m2 ha–1 (Q. leucotrichophorasite). The density ranged between 570 and 760 individuals ha–1.Allometric equations relating biomass of different tree componentsto GBH (girth at breast height) were significant with the exceptionof leaf biomass in Q. leucotrichophora and Rhododendron arboreum.Total vegetation biomass (29·40–467·0 tha–1) was distributed as 377·1 t ha–1 intrees, 5·40 t ha–1 in shrubs and 1·23 tha–1 in herbs. Total forest floor biomass ranged between4·6 and 6·2 t ha–1. Of the total annuallitter fall (4·7–4·8 t ha–1), 77·5% was contributed by leaf litter, 17·8 % by wood litterand 4·7 % by miscellaneous litter. Turnover rate of treelitter varied from 0·66 to 0·70. Net primary productionof total vegetation ranged between 15·9 and 20·6t ha–1 yr–1, of which the contribution of trees, shrubs and herbs was 81·2 %, 8·6 % and 10·2%, respectively. A compartment model of dry matter on the basisof mean data across sites was developed to show dry matter storageand flow of dry matter within the system. Pereira, J. S., Tenhunen, J. D. and Lange, O. L. 1987. Stomatalcontrol of photosynthesis of Eucalyptus globulus Labill. treesunder field conditions in Portugal.—J. exp. Bot. 38: 1678–1688. Stomatal behaviour of adult leaves of Eucalyptus globulus treeswas studied under field conditions in Portugal. In the absenceof severe plant water stress stomata were open when the summedtotal of photosynthetically active photon flux density incidenton both leaf surfaces was above 100 µmol m2s1 and leafconductance to water vapour reached 245 mmol m 2 s1 on a total(both epidermes) leaf area basis. The stomata of both leaf epidermesresponded similarly to changes in solar radiation and waterstress. Water stress resulted in decreasing daily maxima inleaf conductance as predawn leaf water potential decreased.Maximal leaf conductance decreased to less than 50 mmol m 2s 1 when predawn leaf water potential decreased below —1·0MPa. At similar values of predawn leaf water potential stomatawere more closed as the leaf to air water vapour partial pressuredifference increased. The effect of increasing air dryness onstomata was greatest at high predawn leaf water potential. Dailymaxima in photosynthetic rates and in leaf conductance werelinearly related to one another in spring and summer. Both decreasedwith increase in leaf water stress. In autumn and winter, increasesin leaf conductance occurring under natural conditions duringthe course of the day were not necessarily accompanied by increasesin net photosynthesis. Stomata were more closed in the afternoonthan in the morning at the same rates of net photosynthesis, temperature or leaf to air water vapour partial pressure difference. Callose was detected in the cell walls of the tips of growingroot hairs of Trifolium species and the non-legume Phleum pratenseusing u.v. fluorescence of fresh material stained with 0·005%aniline blue. Inoculation of the roots with Rhizobium trifolii,R. leguminosarum, R. meliloti, and R. japonicum, or additionof 10–7 and 10–8 M indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) increasedtip callose formation. Most tip callose was formed at 12 °C, and amounts declinedprogressively at 18, 24, and 30 °C, with very little formedat 36 °C. Tip calloso usually became less and disappearedin individual root hairs as they aged. Callose which appeared prominently in the host cell walls atthe points of initiation of infection threads did not usuallydisappear as the hairs matured. There was little or no extensionof callose along the infection thread and none in the threadtip or in the cell nucleus. Presumptive regions of callose hadsimilar structure and electron density as root hair wall materialand were sometimes related to arrays of vesicles in the hostcytoplasm. The external surface of the hair wall bore smallpegs or papillae (0·1–0·2 µm) continuouswith the outer layer of the wall and possibly associated withattachment of bacteria. Bacteria were usually umboriate at thepoint of attachment and their polyphosphate granules were muchlarger near the root hair than at the distal end.  相似文献

The diffusion of oxyleghaemoglobin, prepared from soybean rootnodules, was measured at 24°C in agar and agarose gels ofvarious strengths, or in 1% agarose containing 0-18% (w/v) bovineserum albumin, to simulate the protein content of the cytoplasmof root nodule cells. Values of Dp, the diffusion coefficient, were unaffected (Dp = 11·8 x 10-11 m2 s-1; s.e.m. 0·3x 10-11) until the protein concentration exceeded 6%, abovewhich Dp declined sharply. With 18% bovine serum albumin, theconcentration of total soluble protein calculated to be presentin the cytoplasm of infected cells, where most of the leghaemoglobinis located in vivo, Dp was 5·9 x 10-11 m2 s-1. The relationship between coleoptile elongation and survivalvs. alcoholic fermentation of rice under anoxia is examinedusing eight cultivars differing in submergence tolerance. Anoxiawas imposed on either 1 or 4 d aerated seeds either by N2 flushingsubmerged tissues or by incubating tissues in stagnant deoxygenatedagar at 0·1% w/v; the latter simulated the stagnant conditionsof waterlogged soil. Two cultivars that were most tolerant tosubmergence also had the greatest tolerance to anoxia, whilea submergence intolerant cultivar was also intolerant to anoxia. Coleoptile growth under anoxia was related to rates of ethanolsynthesis (RE), however differences between growth during anoxiaand survival after anoxia indicated that post-anoxic injurymay also be important in rice seeds exposed to anoxia. The correlationbetween coleoptile growth and RE measured on a tissue basisusing intact seeds was r2 = 0·67 among six varietiesover 0-3 d anoxia. This correlation improved to about r2 = 0·85using RE of (embryos plus coleoptiles) over 0-3 d, or coleoptilesat 3 d after anoxia. Coleoptile growth of individual seeds wasusually poorly correlated to RE in these cultivars at 2-3 dafter anoxia. When coleoptiles of similar lengths were obtainedfrom different cultivars using 4 d aerated seeds, there weredifferences in RE and coleoptile growth which were related tocoleoptile growth during 3 or 5 d anoxia, either on a tissue(r2 = 0·85) or a fresh weight basis (r2 = 0·70-0·97respectively). Results are discussed in relation to factorswhich may limit ethanol synthesis in rice exposed to anoxiaand the importance of growth to the survival of seeds and matureplants during submergence in the natural environment.Copyright1994, 1999 Academic Press Anoxia, ethanol, alcoholic fermentation, Oryza sativa L., rice, submergence  相似文献

Bunce, J. A. 1987. In-phase cycling of photosynthesis and conductanceat saturating carbon dioxide pressure induced by increases inwater vapour pressure deficit.—J. exp. Bot. 38: 1413–1420. The leaf to air water vapour deficit was increased suddenlyfrom about 1·0 to 2·5 IcPa for single leaves ofsoybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) plants held at 30 °C, 2·0mmol m –2 s–1 photosynthetic photon flux density(PPFD) and carbon dioxide pressures saturating to photosynthesis. After a lag of about 10 min, photosynthetic rate and stomatalconductance to water vapour began to decrease, and then cycledin phase with each other. The period of the cydes was about20 min. During these cycles the substomatal carbon dioxide pressurewas constant in the majority of leaves examined, and was alwaysabove saturation for photosynthesis. Epidermal impressions showedthat most stomata changed in aperture during the cycles, andthat very few were ever fully closed. Water potential measuredon excised discs changed by at most 0·1 MPa from theminima to the maxima in transpiration rate. In contrast, forleaves of sunflower (Helianthus animus L.) grown at low PPFD,the increase in VPD led to leaf wilting and decreased photosynthesis, followed by recovery of turgor and photosynthesis as stomatalconductance began to decrease. In these leaves photosynthesisand conductance then cycled approximately 180° out of phase. It is suggested that in soybeans decreased leaf conductanceinduced by high VPD provided a signal which decreased the rateof photosynthesis at carbon dioxide saturation by a mechanismthat was not related to a water deficit in the mesophyll. Water movement to and from a root depends on the soil hydraulicconductivity coefficient (Lsoil), the distance across any root-soilair gap, and the hydraulic conductivity coefficient of the root(LP). After analytical equations for the effective conductanceof each part of the pathway are developed, the influences ofsoil drying on the soil water potential and Lsoil are describedduring a 30 d period for a loamy sand in the field. The influencesof soil drying on LP for three desert succulents, Agave deserti,Ferocactus acanthodes, and Opuntia ficus-indica, are also describedfor a 30 d period. To quantify the effects of soil drying onthe development of a root-soil air gap, diameters of 6-week-oldroots of the three species were determined at constant watervapour potentials of –1.0 MPa and –10 MPa as wellas with the water vapour potential decreasing at the same rateas soil drying during a 30 d period. The shrinkage observedfor roots initially 2·0 mm in diameter averaged 19% duringthe 30d period. The predominant limiting factor for water movementwas LP of the root for the first 7 d of soil drying, the root-soilair gap for the next 13 d, and Lsoil thereafter. Compared withthe ease of water uptake from a wet soil, the decrease in conductancesduring soil drying, especially the decrease in Lsoil causedthe overall conductance to decrease by 3 x 103-fold during the30 d period for the three species considered, so relativelylittle water was lost to the dry soil. Such rectifier-like behaviourof water movement in the soil-root system resulted primarilyfrom changes in Lsoil and, presumably, is a general phenomenonamong plants, preventing water loss during drought but facilitatingwater uptake after rainfall. Water relations and anatomy of a casual epiphyte were studiedat La Carbonera, a tropical cloud forest. Anthurium bredemeyerigrowing as an epiphyte and in its terrestrial form were studiedto find differences due to their different habits. Both formsmaintained relatively high leaf conductances (0·12 to0·15 mol m2 s1) when leaf ater potential was relativelyhigh (above – 0·5 MPa). A lowering of the leafwater potential (below – 0·5 MPa) during the dryseason, significantly affected leaf conductances in both terrestrialand epiphytic forms, the latter one to a greater degree. Interms of anatomy, a reduction in stomatal density was observedin the epiphyte, although no other differences were observed. The results show how the epiphyte was affected to a greaterdegree by a decrease in water availability during the dry seasoncompared to the terrestrial form. Studies on the Movement of Water Through Apple Trees   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
Resistances to the flow of water through young potted appletrees were estimated by measuring the transpiration rate oftrees with and without root systems. Root system resistanceswere obtained by difference. Whole-plant resistances were ofthe order 10 x 1013 Pa s m–3 and there was some evidencethat root resistances (Rr) varied with transpiration rate; theratio Rr:Rx (where Rx is resistance to water flow in the stemsystem) altered from 2:1 at relatively high transpiration ratesto 1:1 at lower rates. The trunk of a 9-year-old orchard tree (trunk diameter {smalltilde}7 cm, height {small tilde}2.5 m) was cut under water andestimates of the flow resistances in this tree were obtained. These were much lower than the resistances to flow in the pottedtrees. Capacitance (defined as the change in stored water content perunit change in plant water potential) values were calculatedfor the small trees and the large tree from measurements ofweight and water potential changes after the trees were removedfrom water. They were very similar on a weight basis (approx.2.0 x 10–8 kg kg–1 Pa–1). Leaf capacitancevalues ({small tilde}1 x 10–8 kg Pa–1 m–2)were also obtained. Stomatal conductances decreased with water potential and increasedwith short-wave radiation, but the relationships were not definitive.Estimates of boundary layer conductance in a greenhouse (verylow wind speeds) were of the same order ({small tilde}5 mm s–1)as values obtained previously.  相似文献

Nitrate reductase activity (NRA, in vivo assay) and nitrate(NO-3) content of root and shoot and NO-3 and reduced nitrogencontent of xylem sap were measured in five temperate cerealssupplied with a range of NO-3 concentrations (0·1–20mol m–3) and three temperate pasture grasses suppliedwith 0·5 or 5 0 mol m–3 NO-3 For one cereal (Hordeumvulgare L ), in vitro NRA was also determined The effect ofexternal NO-3 concentration on the partitioning of NO-3 assimilationbetween root and shoot was assessed All measurements indicatedthat the root was the major site of NO3 assimilation in Avenasatwa L, Hordeum vulgare L, Secale cereale L, Tnticum aestivumL and x Triticosecale Wittm supplied with 0·1 to 1·0mol m–3 NO-3 and that for all cereals, shoot assimilationincreased in importance as applied NO-3 concentration increasedfrom 1.0 to 20 mol m–3 At 5.0–20 mol m–3 NO3,the data indicated that the shoot played an important if notmajor role in NO-3 assimilation in all cereals studied Measurementson Lolium multiflorum Lam and L perenne L indicated that theroot was the main site of NO-3 assimilation at 0.5 mol m–3NO-3 but shoot assimilation was predominant at 5.0 mol m–3NO-3 Both NRA distribution data and xylem sap analysis indicatedthat shoot assimilation was predominant in Dactylis glomerataL supplied with 0.5 or 5.0 mol m–3 NO-3 Avena sativa L., oats, Hordeum vulgare L., barley, Secale cereale L., rye, x Triticosecale Wittm., triticale, Triticum aestivum L., wheat, Dactylis glomerata L., cocksfoot, Lolium multiflorum Lam., Italian ryegrass, Lolium perenne L., perennial ryegrass, nitrate, nitrate assimilation, nitrate reductase activity, xylem sap  相似文献
