Abstract.
  • 1 Field studies were carried out during 4 years to determine the effects of inter-tree variability in the time of budburst of white spruce, Picea glauca Moench (Voss.), on the distribution, behaviour and survivorship of, and herbivory by, the spruce bud moth, Zeiraphera canadensis Mutt. & Free.
  • 2 Differences between trees in herbivory, bud moth density and survivorship were inversely related to the mean date of budburst. The most and least susceptible half-sib‘families’evaluated were the first and last to flush, respectively. Differences in herbivory for trees in two families with similar phenologies were partially due to oviposition preference.
  • 3 Oviposition and larval survivorship were highest on trees in the most susceptible families. Although egg hatch was more closely synchronized with budburst in warm than in cool springs, between tree differences in the time of budburst were consistent over years.

  • 1 Field studies were carried out to determine the effects of intra-tree variation in the time of budburst of white spruce, Picea glauca Moench (Voss.), on the behaviour and survivorship of, and herbivory by, the spruce bud moth, Zeiraphera canadensis Mutt. & Free.
  • 2 There was significant variation in the time of budburst among whorls, shoots and buds. Budburst was acropetal, with buds in the interior of the lower crown bursting first and terminal buds on terminal shoots in the upper crown bursting last.
  • 3 Bud moths laid the greatest proportion of their eggs in the middle of the crown and egg hatch was usually best synchronized to budburst in this region. Many eggs hatched before terminal buds on terminal shoots in the upper crown had burst and thus intra-tree variation in budburst decreased the probability that first-instar larvae would colonize the most important plant parts for growth.
  • 4 However, many later instars dispersed upwards and outwards in the crown and colonized the late bursting buds in the upper crown. Such dispersal reduces the effectiveness of intra-plant variation in budburst to reduce herbivory and permits Z.canadensis to eat young nutritious buds for a longer period of time.
  • 5 Intra-tree variance in the date of budburst was greater than that between trees but there were no consistent differences between the intra-tree variance of trees in half-sib families with high or low susceptibility to Z.canadensis. Differences between trees in herbivory, bud moth density and survivorship were not related to the amount of intra-tree variation in budburst.

  1. Urbanisation is one of the main drivers of insect species loss worldwide. However, its impacts on ecological interactions involving insects still deserve further research, especially seed predation and parasitism of seed predators.
  2. Here, we evaluated the seed predation rate by the specialist bruchid beetle Pseudopachymerina spinipes and its parasitism rate in the native tree Vachellia caven (Fabaceae) along an urbanisation gradient in Cordoba (Argentina). Since resource availability can influence these ecological interactions, we also investigated whether seed and prey availability could affect seed predation and parasitism rates, respectively.
  3. We sampled trees in 10 sampling sites along an urbanisation gradient estimated by the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) within a 100 m radius. In our system, sites with low NDVI, beyond representing the low amount of vegetation cover, also indicate high surface temperature and low availability of host trees.
  4. Seed predation in V. caven and the parasitism rate of P. spinipes were significantly reduced with increasing urbanisation. Notably, seed availability at the pod level did not affect seed predation rate, while prey availability was negatively correlated with parasitism rate.
  5. These findings suggest a deleterious effect of urbanisation on the studied antagonistic interactions, giving no support to the idea of resource limitation effects.

  • 1 This study compared the roles of pupal mortality and parasitism in winter moth (Operophtera brumata) population dynamics in Nova Scotian apple orchards and assessed the importance of beetles as pupal predators.
  • 2 The component of pupal mortality termed predation accounted for greater stage-specific mortality of winter moth than parasitism by Cyzenis albicans in four neglected orchards.
  • 3 Parasitism by Cyzenis albicans was not spatially density-dependent in any orchard, whereas the predation component of pupal mortality was spatially density-dependent in the two orchards most densely populated by winter moth.
  • 4 Field experiments indicated that over 60% of pupal predation may be attributed to beetles, and that about 46% of pupal predation occurred within 4 weeks after pupal drop.
  • 5 Mortality of introduced populations of winter moth in Nova Scotia resembles that of native populations in England where density-dependent predation regulates the winter moth population and reduces the parasitoid population to minimal levels. The situation in Nova Scotia appears to have changed appreciably since the establishment of parasitoids into the system in the 1950s.

  • 1 One of the unresolved questions in studies on population dynamics of forest Lepidoptera is why some populations at times reach outbreak densities, whereas others never do. Resolving this question is especially challenging if populations of the same species in different areas or of closely‐related species in the same area are considered.
  • 2 The present study focused on three closely‐related geometrid moth species, autumnal Epirrita autumnata, winter Operophtera brumata and northern winter moths Operophtera fagata, in southern Finland. There, winter and northern winter moth populations can reach outbreak densities, whereas autumnal moth densities stay relatively low.
  • 3 We tested the hypothesis that a lower vulnerability to pupal predation may explain the observed differences in population dynamics. The results obtained do not support this hypothesis because pupal predation probabilities were not significantly different between the two genera within or without the Operophtera outbreak area or in years with or without a current Operophtera outbreak.
  • 4 Overall, pupal predation was even higher in winter and northern winter moths than in autumnal moths. Differences in larval predation and parasitism, as well as in the reproductive capacities of the species, might be other candidates.

Summary Since the early 1980s, the winter moth, Operophtera brumata L. (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) has emerged as a serious pest of Sitka Spruce, Picea sitchensis Bong. plantations in southern Scotland. Outbreaks are characterised by susceptible sites within plantations which can occur immediately adjacent to resistant sites. We investigated the level of some nutrients in the trees, the date of budburst of the trees, and the numbers of some potential predators of winter moth pupae. None could satisfactorily explain outbreak patterns. Although foliage analysis demonstrated that many trees were marginal or deficient in phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium, these deficiencies were not related to the susceptibility of a site. Within sites, the numbers and weights of O. brumata were positively related to phosphorus content and negatively related to calcium content of foliage. Other evidence suggests, however, that these correlations may not represent direct effects of phosphorus and calcium on larval growth and survival. Date of budburst, which commonly determines susceptibility of deciduous hosts to O. brumata, was unrelated to density, and pupal predators were more, not less, abundant in susceptible sites. Although it is difficult to distinguish between factors that initiate outbreaks and those that maintain them, these data suggest that nutrient deficiencies of trees, budburst date, and the distribution of pupal predators of the winter moth cannot explain patterns of outbreak of the winter moth on spruce.  相似文献

Abstract
  • 1 Genetic variation in the phytochemical responses of plants to CO2 enrichment is likely to alter trophic dynamics, and to shift intraspecific selection pressures on plant populations. We evaluated the independent and interactive effects of atmospheric CO2 and quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) genotype on chemical composition of foliage and performance of the whitemarked tussock moth (Orgyia leucostigma J. E. Sm.).
  • 2 This research was conducted at the Aspen FACE (Free Air CO2 Enrichment) site in northern Wisconsin, U.S.A. Leaf samples were collected periodically from each of three genetically variable aspen genotypes growing under ambient and elevated CO2, and analysed for levels of primary and secondary metabolites. Tussock moth larvae were reared in situ on experimental trees, and development times and pupal masses were recorded.
  • 3 Foliar chemical composition varied among aspen genotypes and in response to CO2 enrichment. However, chemical responses of trees to elevated CO2 were generally consistent across genotypes.
  • 4 Larval development times varied among host genotypes and increased slightly for insects on high‐CO2 plants. Enriched CO2 tended to reduce insect pupal masses, particularly for females on one of the three aspen genotypes.
  • 5 CO2 × genotype interactions observed for plant chemistry and insect performance in this study with a small number of genotypes are probably too few, and too weak, to shift selection pressures in aspen populations. These results differ, however, from earlier work in which more substantial CO2 × genotype interactions were observed for plant chemistry.

The spruce bud moth,Zeiraphera canadensis Mutt & Free. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), displayed a bimodal activity pattern in two young white spruce,Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, plantations. During the day, when temperatures were highest and relative humidities lowest, most moths remained in the lower crown, presumably in response to the risk of hygrothermal stress and/or predation. Flight activity peaks occurred near dawn and dusk. Moths moved higher in the crowns shortly after sunset and many were observed flying above the tree canopy. This activity peak was associated with oviposition and mating. Oviposition started at sunset and continued for approximately 3 h. Females probed oviposition sites with their ovipositor before ovipositing, suggesting that they use sensillae on the ovipositor to evaluate potential oviposition sites. Most mating occurred between 22∶00 and 04∶00 h. Males hovered adjacent to branches containing females before alighting. After alighting, males usually approached to within 2–5 cm of females and then remained motionless for a short time before attempting mounting, indicating that some short-range communication usually occurs prior to mating. Reduced flight activity between midnight and dawn was not due to low temperatures, which were above the minimal temperatures for flight for males (10°C) and females (12°C) determined in the laboratory.  相似文献

  • 1 Spatial fluctuations of the Sardinian population of the gypsy moth Lymantria dispar (L.) (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) were characterized using geostatistical and climate models. Data on gypsy moth egg mass abundance recorded at 282 permanent monitoring sites from 1980 to 2004 were incorporated in a geographic information system with the vegetational, geomorphological and pedological features of the sites.
  • 2 Statistical analyses revealed that the relative outbreak frequency was related to the predominant host tree, slope and elevation of the monitoring sites, whereas there was no correlation between outbreak frequency and exposure and soil type.
  • 3 By using bioclimatic modelling, probability maps of gypsy moth outbreaks were generated. The model identified a probability surface with climatic conditions favourable to gypsy moth outbreaks and thus potentially subject to defoliation. The maps included 92 sites where outbreaks never occurred, suggesting that the Sardinian climate may not be a determinant factor for gypsy moth outbreaks.
  • 4 The geostatistical method cokriging with outbreak frequency as a covariate was found to be the most suitable technique to estimate gypsy moth egg mass abundance. Semivariograms showed spatial correlation of egg mass abundance within the range 18.5–53 km. The results obtained were used to create regional gypsy moth distribution maps by cokriging, which demonstrated the outbreak foci and different infestation levels at each monitoring area. These results can help to delimit the treatment areas and develop rational gypsy moth management programmes.

Seedlings of open-pollinated Picea abies families from Norwegian and Central European parent trees standing at three sites in Norway were tested for timing of bud set at the end of the first growth season together with seedlings from control provenances producing seeds at their geographical origin. The parental origins were confirmed with a maternally inherited mitochondrial marker that distinguishes trees of the Northern European range from those of the Central European range. The seedlings from the families of Central European mother trees producing seeds in Norway had on average a bud set more similar to the families of local Norwegian origin producing seeds at the same site than the provenance of the same Central European origin. It is argued that the rapid change in this adaptive trait from one generation to the next can be explained by recent research results demonstrating that day length and temperature conditions during embryo formation and maturation can influence the phenotypic performance of seedlings in Norway spruce. This effect may influence the fitness of naturally regenerated plants produced in plantations of Central European trees in Norway.  相似文献

  • 1 Ants can have a range of effects on arthropods in crops, including suppressing herbivores such as caterpillars. However, ants can also increase hemipteran densities while reducing natural enemy numbers. In vineyard ecosystem, the effects of native ants and their interactions with other arthropods are poorly understood.
  • 2 An ant‐exclusion experiment was designed to test the impact of native ants on both canopy and ground arthropods concurrently. The potential influence of ants on predation and parasitism of light brown apple moth (LBAM) eggs, a grape pest, was also examined. Adult grapevine scale insects and earwigs under bark were counted after a season of ant‐exclusion.
  • 3 Among 23 ground ant species collected, six were found to forage in the canopy, with two Iridomyrmex species being the most commonly encountered.
  • 4 There was no difference in the abundance of most arthropod orders and feeding groups between ant‐excluded and control vines, although ground spiders were more abundant under ant‐excluded vines, despite increased ground ant foraging pressure. LBAM egg parasitism and predation were low and probably affected by weather and other arthropods. Ant exclusion did not reduce survival of scale insects, although the distribution and abundance of scale insects were negatively associated with earwigs.
  • 5 In conclusion, native ants did not consistently suppress arthropod assemblages, including natural enemies, and they did not promote the survival of scale insects. Interactions among native ant species within a vineyard might minimize their effects on other arthropods, although this needs further study.

  1. Birds’ predation on gypsy moth egg masses deposited on tree trunks was quantitatively evaluated in a birch forest at Bibai, Hokkaido during the four winter seasons from 1974 to 1978.
  2. Holling's disc-equation could be successfully applied to describe the relationship between the total egg consumption by birds and the density of egg masses. A rapid method for fitting the disc-equation to observed data was proposed based on the study byShinozaki andKira (1961).
  3. Appreciable amounts of predation were observed only during the period when the depth of snow cover on the ground exceeded 1 m, while the egg masses deposited on lower parts of tree trunk below 1 m level suffered from only slight predation. It was therefore presumed that deep snow cover made the predator birds to change their feeding place from ground vegetation to tree trunks.
  4. The duration of the period with snow accumulation deeper than 1 m was introduced into the disc-equation as an additional parameter. The values calculated by the resultant formulation agreed with the observed values in respective years satisfactorily.
  5. There were circumstantial evidences that the great tit, Parus major, was one of the important predators concerned.

Initiation of insect outbreaks is poorly understood, and may involve sporadic events that temporarily release insect populations from predation or parasitism. While studying a declining outbreak of the western tussock moth (Orgyia vetusta) on bush lupine (Lupinus arboreus), we witnessed the onset of a new tussock moth outbreak, separated by 1,000 m in space and 2 months in phenological timing from the original population. This new population underwent explosive growth for 2 years and then collapsed because of a massive die-off of lupines. We tested whether during its growth phase, this new outbreak benefited by escaping in either space or time from the natural enemies attacking the original population. In experimental populations on single bushes, we compared predation and parasitism at the sites of the new and the old outbreak. At the site of the old outbreak, we compared predation and parasitism early and late in the season. Parasitism was significantly lower and population growth significantly higher at the new outbreak site than the old one. Neither seasonal timing, predator exclusion, nor their interaction significantly affected survival at either site. Thus the new outbreak appeared to escape in space from parasitism. These results corroborate our previous experimental findings, which suggest that as predicted by theory, the interaction between the tussock moth and its parasitoids can produce large-scale spatial patterning in population densities.  相似文献

The frequency of egg parasitism in the spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) by Trichogramma minutum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) was recorded in several host populations during the rising phase of an outbreak in the Gatineau Valley (Quebec, Canada) in 1999 and 2000. Some of the observed spruce budworm populations were subjected to experimental aerial applications of Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki during the course of the study. Untreated spruce budworm population densities at the onset of the study were directly related to stand composition (the proportion of non‐host basal area) but unrelated to plant species diversity. Much of the variation in budworm egg mass parasitism rates was accounted for (77.1% of total variance) by three variables: year, spruce budworm egg population density, and proportion of non‐host basal area in the stand. The exploitation of eggs within parasitised egg masses was related to year, B. thuringiensis treatment, egg mass size, and the proportion of egg masses parasitised in the host population (76.9% of variance). The yearly variation in parasitism rate was considerable, and was consistent with climatic conditions, namely heat accumulation and precipitation during the spruce budworm oviposition period. Parasitism by T. minutum on eggs of C. fumiferana was recorded in 16 additional sites in 2000, to confirm the general form of the inverse density dependence of parasitism. Observations recorded by Neilson in the Green River area of New Brunswick (Canada) between 1948 and 1957 are discussed in the context of the present analysis. These results indicate that parasitism by T. minutum may be more predictable than previously believed and may be an important and consistent source of mortality in the several years preceding an outbreak of C. fumiferana, especially in mixed‐wood stands and in warmer, drier portions of the spruce budworm's range.  相似文献

  • 1 Field and laboratory experiments identified a character intrinsic to Aristolochia reticulata Nutt. host plants, the terminal leaf bud, that is involved in host-selection behaviour by female pipevine swallowtail butterflies (Battus philenor L.) searching for oviposition sites.
  • 2 In the field, the frequency with which females landed on non-host buds declined seasonally as the proportion of host foliage that consisted of buds decreased. Female butterflies did not land on non-host species in proportion to their abundance; rather, females landed on those non-host species whose buds resembled those of A.reticulata.
  • 3 A.reticulata plants whose terminal leaf bud was concealed by plastic tape were less susceptible to oviposition in the field than were control plants.
  • 4 Female butterflies released in a large, outdoor enclosure were conditioned to search for leaf buds only when exposed to a host species bearing a prominent terminal leaf bud.
  • 5 The significance of conditioning of leaf-bud searching behaviour is discussed with respect to discrimination between hosts and non-hosts, between host species, and among plants within a host species.

Apparent competition, through the action of shared natural enemies, is frequently suggested as a possible mechanism underlying the impact of invasive alien species on native species, but examples are rare, particularly in insects. A previous study showed that the beech leaf mining weevil, Orchestes fagi, was significantly less abundant close to horse-chestnut trees infested by the invasive horse-chestnut leaf mining moth, Cameraria ohridella, compared to control sites. Apparent competition through the sharing of natural enemies was proposed as a potential mechanism underlying this effect. To test the occurrence of apparent competition between the two leaf miner species, three observational studies and one experimental manipulation were carried out in Switzerland during 3 years. The total mortality, parasitism, predation and parasitoid diversity of larvae and pupae of O. fagi were compared between sites with and without horse-chestnut trees severely attacked by C. ohridella. Total mortality and predation rates of O. fagi were not significantly different between sites with and sites without C. ohridella. Despite a large overlap between the parasitoid complexes of the two leaf miners, parasitism of O. fagi was found to be positively influenced by the presence of horse-chestnuts infested by C. ohridella in only one of the four studies and only for 1 year. Similarly, parasitoid diversity was not higher near infested horse-chestnut trees compared to control sites. Thus, little evidence for apparent competition was found. Possible reasons, including possible insufficiencies in the experimental circumstances and design, are discussed.  相似文献
