Gymnodinium catenatum Graham (Dinophyceae)in Europe: a growing problem?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The microreticulate resting cyst of the potentially toxic, chain-forming,unarmoured neritic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenalum Graham1943. the planktonic stage of which is not known from NorthEuropean waters, is reported for the first time from recentGerman coastal sediments of the North Sea and Baltic Sea. Insandy mud sediments of the German Bight, a maximum of 8 5 livingcysts cm–3 were found. In Kiel Bight sediments G.catenalumwas found in maximum concentrations of 17.0 living cysts cm–3.In surface waters of the German Bight resuspended G catenatumcysts were observed at concentrations of up to 3.6 cysts l–1.Successful germination experiments conducted with natural seawatershow that the occurrence of a vegetative form of G.catenatumin northern Europe is very likely. The present study highlightsthat cyst surveys provide an important tool for the evaluationof areas with potential toxicity problems, as they may indicatethe presence of hitherto overlooked species in the water column.  相似文献

Investigations during several cruises (1979–1981) showed that Atlantic cod with pseudobranchial tumours occurred in all areas investigated. Statistical analysis of data revealed that there was a marked prevalence of the condition in the centre of the German Bight, whereas a lower incidence of the condition was observed on the Dogger Bank, off the Dutch coast and in the western Baltic Sea. The higher prevalence of pseudobranchial tumours in the German Bight coincides with a dense population of cod and impacts of pollution.  相似文献

This study compares two stations each sampled at the Øresund (Denmark) and the German coast (western Baltic Sea), with respect to sublittoral Harpacticoida. The associations were found to differ considerably in diversity, species numbers, evenness and also in the species composition. At the two northern stations, mainly polyhaline species were found and they showed the highest species and individual numbers as well as the most even species distribution. At the two southern stations, mainly pleiomesohaline species were found and they were dominated by one species that was very resistant to eutrophication, so that they showed an uneven species distribution, but also had lower individual numbers and thus lower diversity. Some samples at the German coast were found to have an extremely low harpacticoid number, which was attributed to the severe oxygen deficiency that occurred in autumn 2002 in the western Baltic Sea. This can also be considered to be the main reason for the low species diversity of the southern stations.  相似文献

In August 1982, a net of 48 stations with altogether 208 samples was investigated in the eastern German Bight with respect to temperature, salinity, as well as the amount and species composition of the mesozooplankton (>80 μm). The data were arranged into different structures by means of a cluster analysis. Four different clusters were found: (a) a “Wadden sea water” with few holoplankton organisms but a higher amount of spionid larvae; (b) a “German Bight water” with a maximum occurrence of turbellaria (Alaurina composita) and medium concentrations of copepods; (c) a mixing area between these two water masses with highest amounts ofOikopleura dioica, Temora longicornis, Acartia sp., mussel larvae and larvae of the spionid worms; (d) a “North Sea water” mass with highest concentrations ofPseudocalanus elongatus, Paracalanus parvus undOithona similis. The differences in the concentrations of the species mentioned between the four clusters were significant on the 0.1%-level.  相似文献

The hypothesis of a recent reversal in the eutrophication of the Wadden Sea and the potential of inshore waters in denitrification is explored. Salinity, temperature and nitrate concentrations in the List Tidal Basin (Northern Wadden Sea) have been measured about twice weekly since 1984. Salinity has a clear seasonal cycle with lowest salinities of about 27 in late winter and highest salinities of about 31 in summer. Mean annual deviations from the long-term mean salinity correlate significantly with riverine freshwater discharge. Winter nitrate concentrations are generally high (about 50 μM on average). The major part of the variability is related to salinity (∼35%). Temperature had a minor impact (∼1%). Superimposed on this, a long-term decrease of about 1 μM per year was found. Together, these processes account for about 45% of the nitrate variability. The long-term decrease of about 2% per year is similar to continental riverine trend in total nitrogen loads. In contrast to the List Tidal Basin, salinity explained more than 90% of nitrate variability in the off-shore German Bight. Salinity (30) normalised winter nitrate data of the German Bight also show a long-term decreasing trend. Most of the List Tidal Basin data are either on or below the nitrate–salinity relation found in the German Bight. This observation suggests that denitrification has a major impact on the winter nitrate concentrations in the Northern Wadden Sea compared to the German Bight. It is hypothesised that a large part of the unexplained variability is related to weather-dependent changes in residence time of tidal water masses in the Wadden Sea and circulation patterns within the German Bight.  相似文献

Numbers of luminous bacteria were counted at three stations of the brackish water ecosystem of the western Baltic Sea from July 1985 to July 1986. Additional samples were taken during three cruises from stations at the North Atlantic Ocean, the Norwegian Sea and adjacent marine areas. — In Kiel Bight (western Baltic) values varied between 0 and 68,000 luminous cfu 1−1. With exception of the coastal station a distinct seasonal distribution pattern was shown in a water depth of 20 m: high numbers found in summer were opposed to low numbers in winter, the peaks being rather high in comparison to those of other areas. Statistical analysis showed that the results of 20 m were significantly different from those of 0 and 10 m depth; however, there was no correlation with temperature and salinity. Taxonomic studies revealed that the population consisted primarily of the genus Photobacterium. — The optimum of salinity was not a brackish but a marine one and was about 30% for the majority of the strains tested. A smaller number of strains grew best at a salinity between 10 and 15%. Optima of temperature ranged from 15 to 20 °C for most of the test strains. — Taxonomic analysis was also performed with luminous strains from marine areas adjacent to the western Baltic Sea, Photobacterium being the dominant genus here, too. Luminous bacteria were also enriched from the external surface and the gut contents of whitings (Merlangius merlangus) and cods (Gadus morhua). A model is proposed which explains the distribution pattern found. According to this, the gut-dwelling luminous bacteria are transported by their hosts from the North Sea into the western Baltic Sea. Here they are released into the environment, thus inhabiting another niche.  相似文献

Several species of scyphozoan medusae occur in river estuaries and other brackish waters but it is often unknown if the planulae settle and the scyphopolyps reproduce in those low-salinity waters. In the present study, scyphozoan species from the German Bight (North Sea) were tested in laboratory experiments to investigate their tolerance of low salinity. Planula larvae released from medusae in salinity 32 were still active after the salinity was reduced to 10 (Cyanea capillata, Cyanea lamarckii) and to 7 (Chrysaora hysoscella) in laboratory treatments. Planulae did not settle on the undersides of floating substrates when salinity was reduced to <20. By contrast, planulae released from C. capillata medusae in Kiel Bight (western Baltic Sea) in salinity 15 developed into polyps in laboratory cultures. Polyps reared from planulae in salinity 36 survived a reduction to 12 (C. capillata, C. lamarckii) and to 8 (Aurelia aurita). Polyps of all tested species strobilated and released young medusae (ephyrae) in salinity 12. These results show a high tolerance of planulae and polyps to low salinity, indicating their possible occurrence in estuaries and brackish waters. In addition to laboratory observations, young C. capillata ephyrae were collected in the western Baltic Sea (Kiel Bight) in salinity 15, which indicates that they were probably released by a local polyp population. We suggest that the polyps of the painfully stinging lion’s mane, C. capillata, may be more widespread in the Baltic Sea than previously assumed and that the occurrence of the medusae may not only depend on inflow of water masses from the North Sea.  相似文献

In order to investigate the effect of severe winters on the long-term variability of benthic macrofauna communities four stations from the inner German Bight towards the Dogger Bank (North Sea) were sampled in March 1990 and from May 1995 to 2002. The stations were chosen to reflect a gradient in the hydrographic regime, temperature and organic matter supply. We initially hypothesized that the effect of severe winters on benthic communities will be more pronounced in the offshore more stable environment than in the nearshore regions. Our results clearly showed the opposite pattern. The benthic communities at the nearshore stations in the German Bight changed dramatically in species abundance and community structure after the severe winter 1995/1996. But the community structure in the German Bight returned to the previous stage within 2 years. In contrast, the offshore stations in the Oyster Ground and at the Dogger Bank remained rather unaffected by the severe winter and changed gradually during the study period. The results are discussed concerning the ecological importance of severe winters for benthic communities and the utility of our results for interpreting long-term changes.  相似文献

We investigated the seasonal maturity development of cod in four areas of the Baltic Sea. Two different spawning peaks were identified and found to be consistent over the period 1992–2005. In the Kiel Bight and Mecklenburg Bight (ICES SD 22) a spawning peak was observed from March to April (spring spawning). In the areas of the Arkona Sea (ICES SD 24) and Bornholm Sea (ICES SD 25) the spawning peak occurred during summer. In the Bornholm Sea, the main spawning activities began in June and ended in September, with a spawning peak in June–August (summer spawning). In the Arkona Sea, which is a transition area between the Mecklenburg Bight and the central Baltic Sea, spawning began in March and lasted until July, with a spawning peak in June–July (summer spawning). Seasonal maturity development and proportions of spawning cod in June in the Arkona Sea were similar to that of the Bornholm Sea. In addition, the proportion of spawning cod in the Arkona Sea was positively correlated with the size of the spawning stock in the Bornholm Sea. Our results provide evidence of a spatial expansion of spawning activities of the summer spawning stock from the eastern Baltic Sea into the Arkona Sea. Therefore, the Arkona Sea should be considered as one of the spawning habitats of the summer spawning stock of Baltic cod.  相似文献

Prior to the studies reviewed here, only lymphocystis and skeletal deformities of a variety of fish species and certain diseases of eel were known to occur in the German Bight (North Sea). From 1977 until now, 9 externally visible lesions on North Sea fishes were observed; in addition to those mentioned before, they comprise: fin rot, ulcerations, epidermal papilloma, hyperplasia, pseudobranchial tumour, eye diseases and gill swellings. With the exception of information on changes in frequencies of vertebral deformities of herring from the 1950's to the 1970's, there are no long-term data characterizing changes in frequencies of the diseases under study. For pseudobranchial tumours of cod and epidermal papilloma of dab, information is provided on occurrence and abundance. The distribution pattern of cod afflicted with pseudobranchial tumours is strongly influenced by the migratory behaviour of the fish. Epidermal papillomas of dab were more frequently found at stations within the inner German Bight than in neighbouring areas. The Bight is used for dumping of wastes from titaniumdioxide production. Further disease hot spots are areas off the Humber estuary and the British coast. Analysis of chromium in dab from the German Bight revealed elevated concentrations in epidermal tissues of specimens from the dumping area compared with that found in dab from neighbouring localities. Particulate iron was demonstrated to occur in mucous cells of dab from the dumping area. From increased levels of heavy metals with cancerogenic potential in sensitive target tissues and from increased prevalences of diseased fish in the dumping area it is concluded that these phenomena are possibly causally linked. In the vicinity of the Humber estuary high disease rates were encountered and areas with high prevalences of dab afflicted with epidermal papilloma extended over regions shown to be transport routes for persistent pollutants such as radioactive materials. It is therefore suggested that the long-range distribution of fish diseases in the southern North Sea might reflect the long-range transport of persistent pollutants.  相似文献

The netted dog whelk Nassarius reticulatus (Linnaeus, 1758), considered as an extinct benthic species in German Baltic waters, was found again alive in the Mecklenburg Bight during several macrozoobenthic surveys since 1997. All data indicate that the establishment of this marine prosobranch species is connected with the more frequent intrusions of highly saline water from the North Sea into the Baltic that have been observed over the past few years. It is proposed that N. reticulatus is a good bioindicator for the hydrographic status in the western Baltic rather than for other existing potential conditions. Since 1998 a second extinct marine species, the polychaete Scalibregma inflatum Rathke, 1843 was found alive here, too.Original English Text Copyright © 2005 by Biologiya Morya, Nehring. This article was submitted by the author in English.  相似文献

Length distributions of fish were analysed based on data from the German annual (November/December) bottom trawl surveys in the Mecklenburg Bight and Arkona Basin [ICES Subdivisions (SD) 22 and 24, respectively] of the southwest Baltic Sea, covering the period from 1991 to 2000. The length spectra for all fish species, and those for demersal and pelagic species separately, all showed a consistent pattern of declining logarithmic numbers with increasing length over the fully selected size range. Such consistency allowed the shape of the spectra to be used as a community property that could be tracked in space and time. There was a rapid reduction in the number of specimens in the larger size classes, resulting in steep slopes of the spectra, which may be due to intensive fishing pressure in the Baltic. The species composition of fish communities in the southwest Baltic Sea was stable during the period considered. No consistent species replacement was found, although the clupeid group dropped sharply in the catch during the 1996 survey, which might have been due to sudden environmental changes in that year.  相似文献

Trace metals (Cd, Cu, Zp, Pb, Ni) were determined in different zooplankton taxa to assess their role in the biogeochemical cycle in the North Sea. Results of semi-static bioaccumulation experiments on board ship using collectives of Calanus finmarchicus/C. helgolandicus were in agreement with a net accumulation strategy, thus meeting an inevitable precondition for their utilization as biomonitors. Cd, Cu and Zn concentrations in field samples of zooplankton displayed a pronounced variability between taxa, with Cd ranging from 0.13 mg kg-1 (d.w.) in fish larvae to 5I mg kg-1 in hyperiid amphipods. Almost no information is available about metal requirements of copepods. However, most of our and worldwide reported Cu concentrations in calanoid copepods (6-22 mg kg−1) coincided with estimates of enzymatic requirements of decapod crustaceans. Cd levels in Calanus collectives increased significantly from 0.68 mg kg-1 in the German Bight to 11 mg kg−1 at some stations around Scotland above 59° N, in line with literature data reported for benthic decapod crustaceans.  相似文献

Two species of the calanoid copepod Pseudocalanus, P. acuspes and P. elongatus, have been reported from the Baltic and North Seas. Morphometric analysis based on Frost (Can J Zool 67:525–551, 1989) did not identify the species in samples collected during the German GLOBEC program; the majority of measurements fell outside reported ranges for Baltic and North Sea specimens. A multiplexed species-specific PCR (SS-PCR) protocol was designed from a ~700 bp sequence of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (mtCOI), with primers designed to amplify regions of different sizes for the two species to allow detection by gel electrophoresis. The accuracy and reliability of the multiplexed SS-PCR reaction was confirmed by sequencing the mtCOI region. Preliminary SS-PCR analysis of geographic distributions of the two species indicated that P. acuspes occurred exclusively at sampling sites in the Baltic Sea, whereas P. elongatus was found in the southern North Sea and at one site in the Baltic. The SS-PCR protocol can be used for routine identification of the two species for studies of population, community and ecosystem dynamics.  相似文献

Typically, the most abundant group of shrimp larvae in the German Bight is formed by representatives of the family Crangonidae. Larvae of the remaining species have been largely ignored, and only scarce information concerning their ecology is available. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to determine the species composition, distribution and abundance of noncrangonid shrimp larvae in the German Bight in July 1990, after the mildest winter of the century. The material is based upon plankton samples collected at 77 stations, covering the entire German Bight. Eight species were identified, as well as larvae of Palaemonidae andProcessa-juveniles.Processa nouveli holthuisi (53.0%) andP. modica (31.3%) were predominant in the collection. The distribution of the two species was clearly separated: the main concentration ofP. nouveli holthuisi (peak concentration of 1.94 larvae per m3) was confined to the northwest corner of the German Bight, while a majority ofP. modica larvae (peak concentration of 0.54 larvae per m3) occurred at the southwesterly stations. The spatial distribution ofCaridion steveni andEualus occultus around Helgoland indicates the presence of an adult population at the only rocky island in the study area. Other taxa, such as larvae of Palaemonidae and juvenilePandalina brevirostris were collected exclusively in estuarine habitats. Based upon both the results of the present study and comparable data, we conclude that developmental stages of ten non-crangonid species, as well as representatives of Palaemonidae, can be expected to occur in the plankton of the German Bight. The extremely mild temperatures of the preceding winter may have been, in part, responsible for the relatively high densities of some taxa encountered during our plankton survey. We assume that warm winter temperatures favour the immigration, reproduction and survival of cold-sensitive species.  相似文献

Lead and cadmium concentrations were measured in the polychaetesNephtys hombergi andN. caeca, in the sea-urchinEchinocardium cordatum, and in the bivalveVenus striatula obtained from the Dogger Bank and the eastern North Sea. The cadmium concentrations determined in all four species from these areas were relatively equal, except for an increase in concentration found in those species from the northeastern part of the Dogger Bank. A lower lead content was generally observed in the individuals taken from the German Bight than in those from the Dogger Bank, especially from its northeastern part. In the case of lead, it is possible to divide the southern North Sea into three regions according to the different concentration levels by statistical treatment: the less contaminated German Bight, the more contaminated central Dogger Bank and the highly affected northeastern Dogger Bank. The results obtained contradict the prevailing opinion that offshore invertebrate populations are, in comparison to individuals from coastal regions, less affected by contaminants such as heavy metals.  相似文献

Benthic epifauna was sampled in six areas from the German Bight towards the Norwegian Sea using a 2-m standard beam trawl. Nine replicates were taken in each area and year from 1999 to 2006. This data set (60–67 replicates per area) was used to describe the spatial variability in local species composition and to assess the effect of increasing sampling effort on species richness and community structure. Our results confirmed the importance of the 50-m depth contour for the separation of benthic fauna in the North Sea. Low species richness, sparse sessile fauna and high abundances of scavenging species such as Asterias rubens, Liocarcinus holsatus, Astropecten irregularis and Ophiura albida were characteristic of the low-water area south of the 50-m contour. Differences in community structure were less conspicuous in deeper waters north of the 50-m contour, but distribution patterns and abundances of single species such as Echinus elegans, Hyalinoecia tubicola, Ophiothrix fragilis, Scaphander lignarius as well as several hermit crabs resulted in well-defined epifaunal communities. One replicate caught 17–28% of the species found in 60–67 samples and was sufficient to separate the community in the German Bight from those in the central and northern North Sea by using multidimensional scaling. Nine replicates sampled a proportion of 53–60% and provided additional information on the spatial variability of community structure in the central and northern North Sea. Our study indicates that appropriate replication enhances the quality of the data and can partly overcome the constraints of sampling with a 2-m beam trawl. This might be helpful for future monitoring programmes.  相似文献

The transformation of chlorophyll a by two benthic bivalves – Dreissena polymorpha and Mytilus edulis and, for comparison, by the chironomid Chironomus plumosus – was examined. D. polymorpha is a suspension-feeding, freshwater but very salinity-tolerant species, M. edulis a suspension-feeding marine species, and C.␣plumosus a typical detritivorous freshwater species. All three are common in the Odra Estuary. Specimens of the three species were collected from this area in the period 1999–2003. The bivalves were transferred to a compartment on land and kept in tanks filled with water (filtered and unfiltered) collected simultaneously with the organisms, under light and temperature conditions similar to those obtaining in their natural environment. Pigments in the water samples, faeces and pseudofaeces from the tanks, and in the gut content from C. plumosus, were determined with HPLC. The digestion products of the three species were mainly phaeophorbides a, generally thought to originate mainly from zooplankton grazing, and pyrophaeophytin a in minor quantities. The results indicate that the main chlorophyll a derivatives in faeces and pseudofaeces and gut content of the three species were the same as those in the sediments of the Baltic Sea, including the Odra Estuary. Our previous studies have shown that the sediments in this area are richer in phaeophorbides a than sediments from other parts of the southern Baltic Sea. All this suggests that the benthos may play an important role in the transformation of chlorophyll a in the Odra Estuary area.  相似文献

The human impact in the German Bight, in the form of anthropogenic eutrophication, has been documented by a 30-year time-series measurement near the island of Helgoland. Since 1962, the Biologische Anstalt Helgoland has measured inorganic nutrients and phytoplankton abundance from daily samples at Helgoland Roads, a position 60 km off the main source of eutrophication, the River Elbe. Since the early sixties, phosphate concentrations rose for about a decade, levelling off to about twice the former concentrations for another decade, and then decreasing (since 1982) as a result of phosphate-reducing measures. Nitrate concentrations, however, have only increased since 1980/81, following Elbe river flood events. In 1987, three times the former concentrations were reached. A decrease has been observed only since 1991. This different development of phosphorus and nitrogen eutrophication led to a shift of inorganic N/P-ratios in the German Bight. The phosphate increase was more pronounced in the late summer “regeneration mode” conditions, the nitrate increase in the winter months. The eutrophication is not restricted to the inner German Bight and coastal waters of a salinity of <33, but has also occurred in more saline waters at S>33 psu (practical salinity unit), as characteristic for the outer German Bight. In this more saline water, phosphate and nitrate maximum levels occurred three years later, compared with the average Helgoland data, which are more representative of the inner German Bight. It is suggested that suspended particulate organic matter, as a long-distance carrier of nutrients, might have caused this delayed eutrophication in the outer German Bight waters. While the human impact is obvious as to nutrient concentrations, it is less obvious in phytoplankton stock enhancement. A general increase in phytoplankton biomass (about 3–4 times) was found, but this was mainly due to unidentified nanoflagellates of unknown trophic state, and subject to methodological errors. The causal relationships of phytoplankton stocks and eutrophication are not clearly understood, as natural variability is large and hydrographical factors possibly dominate. Additional nutrient input by Elbe river floods did not always result in elevated phytoplankton stocks near Helgoland, while extended periods of vertical density stratification of the German Bight water caused large plankton blooms.  相似文献
