Gene duplication, arising from region-specific duplication or genome-wide polyploidization, is a prominent feature in plant genome evolution. Understanding the mechanisms generating duplicate gene copies and the subsequent dynamics among gene duplicates is vital because these investigations shed light on regional and genome-wide aspects of evolutionary forces shaping intra- and interspecific genome contents, evolutionary relationships, and interactions. This review discusses recent gene duplication analyses in plants, focusing on the molecular and evolutionary dynamics occurring at three different timescales following duplication: (1). initial establishment and persistence of cytotypes, (2). interactions among duplicate gene copies, and (3). longer term differentiation between duplicated genes. These relative time points are presented in terms of their potential adaptive significance and impact on plant evolutionary genomics research.  相似文献

The hypothesised hybrid origin of the High Arctic grass × Pucciphippsia vacillans from the putative parents Puccinellia vahliana, Phippsia algida or Phippsia concinna was investigated by analyses of morphological, cytological, and enzymatic data. Chromosome counts showed that × P. vacillans from Svalbard is triploid (2n = 21) and sterile, supporting the hypothesis of a hybrid origin. Enzymatic investigations showed that × P. vacillans is identical to Phippsia in most enzyme markers and furthermore that all four taxa are closely related. Additive banding pattern in one enzyme system (6-PGD) as well as some morphological traits indicated that × P. vacillans is a Puccinellia × Phippsia hybrid. × Pucciphippsia vacillans is morphologically intermediate between Phippsia algida and Puccinellia vahliana in several individual characters as well as in a multivariate analysis, indicating that Phippsia algida is the more probable Phippsia parent. Mature seeds have never been observed in × P. vacillans and the taxon has no known mode of vegetative reproduction. This investigation suggests that it might be a sterile first-generation hybrid wherever it occurs in Svalbard. The close genetic relationship between × Pucciphippsia, Phippsia, and Puccinellia vahliana has implications for their generic delimitation and might suggest that only one genus is involved.  相似文献

Phytogeographic, ecological, morphological, anatomical, cytological, isozyme, and endonuclease restriction site evidence is presented demonstrating thatPoa labradorica is of intergeneric hybrid origin betweenDupontia fisheri subsp.psilosantha (pistillate parent) andPoa eminens (staminate parent).Poa labradorica is endemic to recently deglaciated areas of northern Quebec and Labrador which are within the overlapping range of the putative parents. Incapable of sexual reproduction,P. labradorica dominates large areas of coastal marsh through vigorous production of rhizomes. Most morphological, anatomical, cytological, isozyme, and DNA characters studied inP. labradorica showed states intermediate or additive to those of the putative parents.  相似文献

Morphological analysis and electrophoresis of seed proteins of fiveLolium species disclosed that they form two distinct groups corresponding to those recognized from compatibility data.Lolium temulentum andL. remotum of the self-pollinated group were shown to be distinct but closely related species. Morphological intergradation and high similarities between protein profiles ofL. perenne, L. multiflorum andL. rigidum (cross-pollinated species) suggest little genetic differentiation between these taxa. Background

The genus Spartina exhibits extensive hybridization and includes classic examples of recent speciation by allopolyploidy. In the UK there are two hexaploid species, S. maritima and S. alterniflora, as well as the homoploid hybrid S. × townsendii (2n = 60) and a derived allododecaploid S. anglica (2n = 120, 122, 124); the latter two are considered to have originated in Hythe, southern England at the end of the 19th century.

Methods

Genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) and flow cytometry were used to characterize the genomic composition and distribution of these species and their ploidy levels at Eling Marchwood and Hythe, both near Southampton, southern England.

Key Results

GISH identified approx. 60 chromosomes each of S. maritima and S. alterniflora origin in S. anglica and 62 chromosomes from S. alterniflora and 30 chromosomes from S. maritima in a nonaploid individual from Eling Marchwood, UK. GISH and flow cytometry also revealed that most (94 %) individuals examined at Hythe were hexaploid (the remaining two individuals (6 %) were dodedcaploid; n = 34), whereas hexaploid (approx. 36 % of plants), nonaploid (approx. 27 %) and dodecaploid (approx. 36 %) individuals were found at Eling Marchwood (n = 22).

Conclusions

Nonaploid individuals indicate the potential for introgression between hexaploid and dodecaploid species, complicating the picture of polyploid-induced speciation within the genus. Despite the aggressive ecological habit of S. anglica, it has not out-competed S. × townsendii at Hythe (homoploid hybrids at a frequency of 94 %, n = 34), despite >100 years of coexistence. The success of GISH opens up the potential for future studies of polyploid-induced genome restructuring in this genus.  相似文献

The distribution of CHy-banded heterochromatin was studied in the chromosomes ofAegilops longissima, Ae. speltoides, Triticum monococcum, andT. turgidum. Interphase nuclei were measured after Feulgen staining at different thresholds of optical density; the curves so obtained indicated the relationship among the species with respect to the different fractions of the genomic DNA. The karyological and cytophotometric analyses indicate differences betweenAe. speltoides andAe. longissima, the latter species being enriched in heterochromatin. Similar results were demonstrated for the genusTriticum, in whichT. turgidum showed more heterochromatin when compared withT. monococcum. The results suggest that the B genome of the cultivated wheats possesses a type of heterochromatin that resembles the type present inAe. longissima.  相似文献

Giemsa C-banding patterns of the grassesFestuca rubra (2n = 6x = 42),Vulpia fasciculata (2n = 4x = 28) and their wild F1 hybrid ×Festulpia hubbardii (2n = 5x = 35) show marked differences between the chromosomes of the two parents that enable unequivocal identification ofFestuca andVulpia chromosomes in the hybrid. Moreover, meiotic banding patterns reveal that both homogenetic (Festuca-Festuca andVulpia-Vulpia) and heterogenetic (Festuca-Vulpia) pairing occurs in the F1. Genomic in situ hybridisation (GISH) and Southern genomic hybridisation were applied in order to gain further knowledge regarding generic delimitation of the genus Hystrix as well as to clarify the genomes of the Hystrix species H. patula, H. longearistata, H. coreana, H. duthiei and H. komarovii. The hybridisation intensity of different genomic probes was compared among the Hystrix species and with other Triticeae species. The Southern- and GISH results confirm that H. patula contains the StH genome and show that H. komarovii most likely has a variant of this StH genome. The other Hystrix species under study, i.e. H. longearistata, H. coreana and H. duthiei, contain an Ns basic genome, and most probably two variants of this basic genome, Ns 1 Ns 2 . The genus Hystrix is thus not a monophyletic group of species.  相似文献

Interspecific and intergeneric hybridizations were carried out to evaluate the genomic relationships among species of Hystrix Moench and to study the relationships between Hystrix species and Psathyrostachys huashanica Keng (2n=2x=14, Nsh). Meiotic pairing in hybrids of Hystrix duthiei ssp. duthiei × P. huashanica (2n=3x=21), Hystrix duthiei ssp. longearistata × P. huashanica (2n=3x=21) and H. patula × P. huashanica (2n=3x=21) averaged 5.18, 5.11 and 0.29 bivalents per cell, while H. patula × H. duthiei ssp. longearistata (2n=4x=28) averaged 25.36 univalents and 1.32 bivalents per cell, respectively. The results indicate that (i) H. duthiei ssp. duthiei and H. duthiei ssp. longearistata have one set of Ns genome from Psathyrostachys; (ii) H. patula has no Ns genome; (iii) genomes of H. duthiei ssp. duthiei and H. duthiei ssp. longearistata are non-homologous to those of H. patula. The genomic relationships between H. patula and other Hystrix species are also discussed.  相似文献

Seed protein electrophoresis confirms the existence of polymorphism among hexaploid populations ofFestuca arundinacea. Both protein and morphological results suggest thatF. pratensis andF. arundinacea should retain independent specific status. In consideration of their origin the adaptive strategies of the evergreen species of the Mediterranean maquis were analysed. Rosmarinus officinalis L., Erica arborea L., and Erica multiflora L. had the lowest net photosynthetic rate (PN) in the favourable period [7.8±0.6 mol(CO2) m–2s–1, mean value], the highest PN decrease (on an average 86 % of the maximum) but the highest recovery capacity (>70 % of the maximum) at the first rainfall in September. Cistus incanus L. and Arbutus unedo L. had the highest PN during the favourable period [15.5±5.2 mol(CO2) m–2s–1, mean value], 79 % decrease during drought, and a lower recovery capacity (on an average 54 %). Quercus ilex L., Phillyrea latifolia L., and Pistacia lentiscus L. had an intermediate PN in the favourable period [9.2±1.3 mol(CO2) m–2s–1, mean value], a lower reduction during drought (on an average 63 %), and a range from 62 % (Q. ilex and P. latifolia) to 39 % (P. lentiscus) of recovery capacity. The Mediterranean species had higher decrease in PN and stomatal conductance during drought and a higher recovery capacity than the pre-Mediterranean species. Among the pre-Mediterranean species, P. latifoliahad the best adaptation to long drought periods also by its higher leaf mass per area (LMA) which lowered leaf temperature thus decreasing transpiration rate during drought. Moreover, its leaf longevity determined a more stable leaf biomass during the year. Among the Mediteranean species, R. officinalis was the best adapted species to short drought periods by its ability to rapidly recover. Nevertheless, R. officinalis had the lowest tolerance to high temperatures by its PN dropping below half its maximum value when leaf temperature was over 33.6°C. The spatial scale of genetic diversity among patches of a host plant could affect the likelihood of pathogen adaptation to the host. If host patches are genetically distinct, pathogen adaptation to local host genotypes may occur. To study this issue, we focused on the ecological and genetic interactions between two rust fungi, Puccinia seymouriana and P. sparganioides, and the clonal prairie grass, Spartina pectinata. In a field transplant experiment, disease levels differed among plants from different patches, suggesting variation in resistance. Over a 4.5-km scale, disease levels were not higher on plants transplanted back into their source patch as opposed to other locations, providing no evidence for local adaptation in the pathogen. However, on the spatial scales examined (ranging from 0.2 km to 120 km), there was no relationship between the physical distance separating host patches and their similarity in isozyme banding patterns, implying that plants from more distant patches are not necessarily more genetically distinct than plants from nearby patches. Plants derived from the most distant location had, on average, the lowest mean number of pustules at the end of the summer, suggesting the need for reciprocal transplant studies to be performed on a larger spatial scale.  相似文献
