Extrapair paternity, migration, and breeding synchrony in birds   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:2  
To understand interspecific patterns in the strength of sexualselection, variation in the costs and benefits of exercisingmate choice needs to be evaluated. One manifestation of sexualselection in birds is the occurrence of greatly variable levelsof extrapair paternity (EPP). A proposed general explanationfor this variation is that the benefits to females in seekingextrapair copulations vary in a predictable manner accordingto the degree of breeding synchrony because females are betterable to assess potential extrapair partners when males are simultaneouslyin breeding condition. This hypothesis predicts a latitudinaltrend in EPP because birds tend to breed more synchronouslyaway from the equator. Expanding on previous geographicallyand taxonomically restricted tropical/temperate comparisons,we used phylogenetically independent standardized linear contraststo show that this positive relationship persists when all birdspecies for which EPP estimates currently exist are considered.However, if a third factor covaries with latitude in the sameway as breeding synchrony and EPP, this relationship need notbe causal. Migration could also account for latitudinal variationin the benefits to females of pursuing EPP, if migration isassociated with (1) hasty or (2) inaccurate mate choice, (3)facilitated assessment of male quality through the condition-dependenceof arrival time, or (4) increased genetic variance in male quality.We show that migration distance is positively related to theproportion of EPP and that migration can statistically explainthe latitudinal trend in EPP, even when confounding factorsare simultaneously controlled. Hence, alternative explanationsfor latitudinal variation in EPP may be feasible, and carefulintraspecific tests are needed to assess their relative importanceand their implications for geographical variation in life-historyevolution.  相似文献

Breeding density, synchrony, and experience are expected toinfluence the frequency of extrapair paternity in birds. UsingDNA fingerprinting, we examined the effect of these factorson tree swallows nesting at relatively high (grids of nest-boxes)and low (solitary boxes at least 100 m from the nearest neighbor)densities and in relatively synchronous (Alberta) and asynchronous(Ontario) populations in Canada. The mean percentage of extrapairoffspring per nest did not differ significantly between birdsnesting in grids (43%, n = 22 families) and solitary boxes (57%,n = 12 families). Similarly, there was no significant differencein the mean percentage of extrapair offspring per nest betweenrelatively synchronous (60%, n = 12 Alberta families) and asynchronous(41%, n = 22 Ontario families) populations. We also found noconsistent pattern between extrapair paternity and breedingexperience among seven males and seven females examined overtwo to three breeding seasons. Female tree swallows can influencethe fertilization success of extrapair males by active selectionand rejection of copulation partners. In central coastal California, USA, 3–16% of western bluebird ( Sialia mexicana ) pairs have adult male helpers at the nest. Demographic data on a colour-ringed population over a 13-year period indicate that helpers gain a small indirect fitness benefit through increases in the number of young fledged from nests of close kin. A small proportion of adult helpers (16%) that were able to breed and help simultaneously had higher annual inclusive fitness than males that only bred. These males comprised such a minor proportion of helpers that the mean fitness of helpers was still lower than the mean fitness of independent breeders. We used DNA fingerprinting to determine whether extrapair fertilizations alter within-group benefits enough to tip the balance in favour of helping behaviour. Overall, 19% of 207 offspring were sired by males other than their social father and extrapair fertilizations occurred in 45% of 51 nests. Intraspecific brood parasitism was rare so that mean mother-nestling relatedness approximated the expected value of 0.5. Extrapair paternity reduced putative father-offspring relatedness to 0.38. Mean helper-nestling relatedness was 0.41 for helpers assisting one or both parents and 0.28 for helpers aiding their brothers. Helpers rarely sired offspring in the nests at which they helped. Helping was not conditional on paternity and helpers were not significantly more closely related to offspring in their parents' nests than to offspring in their own nests. Although helpers may derive extracurricular benefits if helping increases their own or their father's opportunities for extrapair fertilizations, within-nest inclusive fitness benefits of helping do not compensate males for failing to breed. Breeding failure and constraints on breeding are the most likely explanations for why most helpers help.  相似文献

We examined the role of extrapair fertilizations (EPFs) in themating system of the hooded warbler (Wilsonia citrina), a monogamoussongbird. DNA fingerprinting revealed that 8 of 17 (47%) femaleshad extrapair young in their first or second brood, and 23 of78 (29%) nestlings were the result of EPFs. Extrapair youngwere signifkandy more likely to occur in first broods than insecond broods. The proportion of EPFs within a brood was stronglybirnodal among broods: nests had 50% or more extrapair youngor none. In seven of eight broods where EPFs occurred, an adjacentmale neighbor was identified as the actual father. Male-likecoloration in females did not reduce the likelihood of havingextrapair young. Females with extrapair young did not receiveless parental care from their mates. All males who obtainedEPFs were mated to fertile females or were feeding offspringat the time they most likely mated with the extrapair female.Our results are consistent with the female control hypothesis,which predicts that females benefit from extrapair copulations(EPCs) and have some control over which males, if any, obtainEPCs. However, we could not reject the alternative hypothesisthat some male neighbors are particularly dominant and aggressiveduring EPC attempts, so females accept these EPCs to minimizecosts.  相似文献

Extra-pair mating is widespread in birds, but its adaptive function remains unclear. It is often suggested that females obtain superior genes for their offspring as a consequence of extra-pair mating, but the evidence is limited. In this study, we examined the hypothesis that extra-pair mating provides females with offspring that have superior immune responses. We found that the T-cell-mediated immune response of extra-pair young was stronger than that of within-pair young in common yellowthroats (Geothlypis trichas). This paternity effect occurred when we compared all nestlings in the population, as well as in comparisons of both paternal and maternal half-siblings. Paternal half-siblings had a stronger immune response when they were produced with extra-pair females than with the male's social mate, which suggests that the greater immune response of extra-pair young was caused by nonadditive (compatible) genetic effects. However, these patterns were only significant in the colder of 2 years. Immune response was related positively to air temperature and nestlings had a stronger immune response in the warmer year. We suggest that such environmental variation could obscure the genetic benefits of extra-pair mating.  相似文献

Bird song is usually considered to have evolved in the contextof sexual selection. Because extrapair paternity is a majorcomponent of sexual selection, mating advantages at the sociallevel for males that produce songs of high quality may be transformedinto higher success in extrapair paternity. Therefore, maleswith longer and more complex songs should suffer less from extrapairpaternity intraspecifically, whereas species with high ratesof extrapair paternity, reflecting intense sperm competition,should produce more elaborate songs. Although some intraspecificstudies demonstrated a negative link between features of songsand extrapair paternity in own nest, others failed to detectsuch a relationship. Contrary to expectation, a meta-analysisof all studies revealed no significant intraspecific evidencefor songs being associated with extrapair paternity. In addition,in comparative analyses based on generalized least squares (GLS)models, we found that no measures of song complexity and temporaloutput were significantly related to extrapair paternity interspecifically,even when potentially confounding factors such as social matingsystem, life history, migration, habitat, or sexual dichromatismwere held constant. Only plumage dichromatism was significantlyrelated to extrapair paternity. The absence of both intra- andinterspecific relationships between measures of song variabilityand extrapair paternity suggests that factors other than postmatingsexual selection have been the important evolutionary forcesshaping differences in song.  相似文献

Effects of alternate mating strategies on the opportunity forsexual selection are widely debated, and recent studies haveconcluded that the effects of extrapair (EP) paternity on theopportunity for sexual selection may have been overstated dueto 1) methodological limitations of empirical studies and 2)the potential for males to gain from additional within-pair(WP) reproductive opportunities. We therefore examined the impactof EP paternity on the opportunity for sexual selection in thesocially monogamous and single-brooded eastern kingbird (Tyrannustyrannus). EP paternity was common in all 3 years of our study(61% of 89 broods, 47% of nestlings) and realized reproductivesuccess (EP + WP young) ranged from 0 to 9 young/male/year.A total of 31% of males lost all WP paternity (24% sired neitherWP nor EP young, whereas 7% sired EP but not WP young), andvariance in male realized reproductive success was more than9 times greater than that of apparent reproductive success.Nearly half of EP mates were not nearest neighbors, and manywere separated by 3 or more territories (>1000 m). EP successwas independent of nest defense behavior, but early singingmales and males with high song rates were most successful atboth a population level and when cuckolders and cuckoldees werecompared. EP paternity contributed significantly to the opportunityfor sexual selection in kingbirds, and we suggest that thisis probably due to the low potential for WP variation in reproductivesuccess, apparent long-distance movements of one or both sexes,and consequent absence of reciprocal cuckoldry.  相似文献

In 1993 and 1994 we determined the frequency of extrapair paternityin broods of great tits, Parus major using multilocus DNA fingerprinting.We found no instances of intraspecific brood parasitism, but40% of broods (31/78) contained extrapair-fathered young and83% of offspring (58/681) were xtrapair We identified the geneticfathers of 60% of the extrapair nestlings (35/ 58). Males withfull and lost paternity did not differ significantly in traitsthat have been suggested to indicate male quality, nor did thegenetic and social fathers of extrapair offspring. In 1993,cuckolded males sired more offspring that recruited to the subsequentbreeding season than males with full paternity. Moreover, eventhough genetic fathers of extrapair young (EPY) sired more fledglingsthan the males they cuckolded, genetic and social fathers ofEPY did not differ in the number of recruits sired. Also, theEPY of a brood did not survive better than their half sibs.Thus, our results do not supportthe hypothesis that femaleschoose better quality males for extrapair matings ("good genes"hypothesis). Further, the level of extrapair paternity differedmarkedly between the two years. Our data show that females areconstrained in their extrapair activities by the availabilityof extrapair mates. Species in which males directly defend groups of breeding femalesoften have extreme skew in observed male mating success. Inonly a few species, however, has a corresponding skew in fertilizationsuccess been confirmed. Furthermore, the ecological and socialfactors contributing to variation in fertilization success needinvestigation. This study examined competition for mates andpaternity in the boat-tailed grackle (Quiscalus major). Observationsat colonies of nesting females revealed that the toprankingor alpha males performed more than 70% of the copulations. DNAfingerprinting indicated that alpha males sired less than 40%of nestlings. Nevertheless, analysis of band-sharing scoresamong nestlings from different nests suggested that alpha malessired more than three times as many offspring as any other individualmale. Because few nestlings were sired by the nonalpha malesthat associated with colonies, females must have mated withother males while on trips away from colonies. Analysis of paternitywithin broods revealed that at least half of all females hadtheir brood fertilized by more than one male. Alpha males' successat fertilizing eggs did not vary with the number of simultaneouslyreceptive females within a colony. Our results suggest that maleand female behavior in female-defense polygyny results fromcomplex coevolution of the sexes.  相似文献

Sexual selection should produce sexual size dimorphism in species where larger members of one sex obtain disproportionately more matings. Recent theory suggests that the degree of sexual size dimorphism depends on physical and temporal constraints involving the operational sex ratio, the potential reproductive rate and the trade-off between current reproductive effort and residual reproductive value. As part of a large-scale experiment on dispersal, we investigated the mating system of common brushtail possums inhabiting old-growth Eucalyptus forest in Australia. Paternity was assigned to 20 of 28 pouch-young (maternity known) genotyped at six microsatellite loci. Male mating success was strongly related to body size and age; male body weight and age being highly correlated. Despite disproportionate mating success favouring larger males, sexual size dimorphism was only apparent among older animals. Trapping and telemetry indicated that the operational sex ratio was effectively 1 : 1 and the potential reproductive rate of males was at most four times that of females. Being larger appeared to entail significant survival costs because males 'died-off' at the age at which sexual size dimorphism became apparent (8-9 years). Male and female home ranges were the same size and males appeared to be as sedentary as females. Moreover, longevity appears to be only slightly less important to male reproductive success than it is to females. It is suggested that a sedentary lifestyle and longevity are the key elements constraining selection for greater sexual size dimorphism in this 'model' medium-sized Australian marsupial herbivore.  相似文献

Male-biased sexual dimorphism in both size and body mass isa common characteristic of many polygynous mammals and is oftenattributed to sexual selection favoring large males. The degreeof dimorphism is thought to be related to the potential forsome males to monopolize access to estrous females, which isin turn related to the distribution of receptive females inspace and time. In the present study, we investigated the relationshipbetween the temporal distribution of breeding females and thedegree of mass dimorphism among 11 populations of the commonbrushtail possum from northern Australia. Breeding patternsvaried from complete aseasonality in some populations to a seasonalconcentration of births within 2 or 3 months in others. We predictedthat in populations in which mating opportunities were distributedthroughout the year, dominant males would be able to monopolizeaccess to larger numbers of estrous females than in populationsin which matings were more seasonal, and in such populations,large body size in males would be favored. We found that dimorphismwas related to seasonality of breeding, being greatest in populationswith a more aseasonal pattern. Mean body mass of male possumsalso decreased with increasing population density. Populationdensity may influence the degree of breeding synchrony withinpopulations, particularly in locations with a more seasonalclimate. The present study is the first to demonstrate plasticityin mass dimorphism in response to local variation in the synchronyof breeding in a mammal species.  相似文献

The elaborateness of many bird songs is commonly presumed tohave evolved under the influence of sexual selection by femalemate choice. Thus, aspects of acoustic diversity, such as songrepertoire size, are seen as likely targets of female choice.In many songbird species with song repertoires, however, therepertoires are small. In such species, female choice mightbe based on song features other than, or in addition to, songdiversity. To investigate this conjecture, I assessed singingand paternity in a population of chestnut-sided warblers (Dendroicapensylvanica), a species in which song repertoires are of modestsize. Twenty-two song traits were evaluated to determine whichones best predicted male extrapair reproductive success. Thecandidate traits encompassed measures of song diversity (e.g.,song repertoire size), gross-scale song performance (e.g., singingrate), and fine-scale song performance (e.g., variability amongsongs in a bout). Regression analysis revealed that the bestpredictor of extrapair success was singing with little variability.In particular, the most successful males sang with consistentpitch and timing, as well as high pitch. The greater extrapairsuccess of males with more consistent vocal performance maybe due to female preference for such performance, which couldbe an indicator of male quality.  相似文献

It is difficult to predict a priori how mating success translates into fertilization success in simultaneous hermaphrodites with internal fertilization. Whereas insemination decisions will be determined by male interests, fertilization will depend on female interests, possibly leading to discrepancies between insemination and fertilization patterns. The planarian flatworm Schmidtea polychroa, a simultaneous hermaphrodite in which mating partners trade sperm was studied. Sperm can be stored for months yet individuals mate frequently. Using microsatellites, maternity and paternity data were obtained from 748 offspring produced in six groups of 10 individuals during four weeks. Adults produced young from four mates on average. Reciprocal fertilization between two mates was found in only 41 out of 110 registered mate combinations, which is clearly less than what is predicted from insemination patterns. Multiple paternity was high: > 80% of all cocoons had two to five fathers for only three to five offspring per cocoon. Because animals were collected from a natural population, 28% of all hatchlings were sired by unknown sperm donors in the field, despite a 10-day period of acclimatization and within-group mating. This percentage decreased only moderately throughout the experiment, showing that sperm can be stored and used for at least a month, despite frequent mating and sperm digestion. The immediate paternity a sperm donor could expect to obtain was only about 25%. Male reproductive success increased linearly with the number of female partners, providing support for Bateman's principle in hermaphrodites. Our results suggest that hermaphrodites do not trade fertilizations when trading sperm during insemination, lending support to the view that such conditional sperm exchange is driven by exchange of resources.  相似文献

The dynamics of hybrid zones are likely to be influenced greatlyby patterns of mate choice, including "cryptic" choice mediatedthrough extrapair copulations. To understand changes in hybridzones over time and space, a detailed examination of matingpatterns and correlates is needed. We studied the role of extrapairfertilizations (EPFs) in the breeding biology of hybridizingblack-capped and Carolina chickadees in southeastern Pennsylvaniaover 4 years, using microsatellite DNA markers. We detectedextrapair offspring (EPO) in 56% of 90 broods examined; theseaccounted for at least 26% of 477 offspring. Chickadees do notappear to use EPFs to reduce costs of heterospecific pairing:EPFs were no more likely to occur in genetically dissimilar(heterospecific) social pairs than in pairs where social mateswere genetically similar. However, females paired with black-capped–likemales were more likely to have EPO. Females that acquired EPFsdid not obtain these from males genetically similar to themselves;instead, all females, regardless of their genotype or that oftheir social mate, tended to prefer Carolina-like males as extrapairpartners. There was no relationship between the presence ofEPO and hatching or fledging success. High rates of extrapairpaternity and apparent female preference for Carolina-like malessuggest that mate choice is an important influence in ongoingnorthward movement of this hybrid zone.  相似文献

Birds breeding on islands often exhibit lower rates of extrapair paternity than their mainland counterparts, perhaps explained by low genetic variation, ‘slower’ life histories and reduced sexual selection in island populations. Extrapair paternity was apparent in 39% (12/19) of broods, and encompassed 15% (21/137) of nestlings, in a population of African Blue Tits Cyanistes teneriffae, in Tenerife, Canary Islands. There were no cases of intraspecific brood parasitism. The incidence of extrapair young lies in the upper range of that reported from mainland populations of the closely related Eurasian Blue Tit Cyanistes caeruleus. We conclude that there is no strong island effect on the genetic mating system in the Cyanistes species group but that extrapair paternity rates in Cyanistes are greater at southern latitudes.  相似文献

Paternity has been hypothesized to be related to the evolutionof paternal care because (1) there should be selection formales not to invest in broods with an uncertain parentage,or (2) male extrapair activity is traded against paternal care.We used interspecific comparisons to discriminate between these alternatives. Male participation in three kinds of parentalcare (nest building, incubation, provisioning of offspring)increased with high paternity in their own nests. Male parentalactivities at some stages of the breeding cycle were significantlycorrelated. A multivariate analysis taking this intercorrelationbetween different components of care and potentially confoundingvariables such as precociality, polyandry, and sexual dichromatism into account revealed that paternity was significantly positivelyrelated to offspring provisioning, while male participationin the other components of parental care did not explain asignificant amount of interspecific variation in paternity.Analyses of evolutionary transitions between different dichotomizedstates of paternity and paternal care provided no clear conclusionsconcerning evolutionary scenarios. However, theoretical arguments and the results of the contrast analyses suggest that male provisioningof offspring evolved in response to paternity.  相似文献

Extrapair fertilizations (EPFs) are frequently documented insongbirds; however, the extent to which this reproductive tacticcontributes to variance in male reproductive success and hencethe strength of sexual selection on males remains little studied.Using 2 approaches, intraspecific and comparative, we test thehypothesis that the contribution of EPFs to variance in malefitness increases with migration distance in north temperatesongbirds. Using data on the genetic mating system of the scarletrosefinch Carpodacus erythrinus, a long-distance migrant, weshow that the number of extrapair mates and within-pair paternityare the most important components of variance in male reproductivesuccess. There was no evidence of a trade-off between extrapairand within-pair success of individual males as males successfulin procuring EPFs were less likely to be cuckolded. Comparativedata reveal that the opportunity for sexual selection due toEPFs is positively associated with both migration distance andbreeding synchrony in north temperate passerines, and we discussseveral mechanisms that could extend these relationships. Ingeneral, these data suggest that EPFs have a potential to playan important role in the evolution of sexually selected traitsin long-distance migratory songbirds such as rosefinches.  相似文献

Many species engage in polyandry, resulting in the potential for sexual selection to continue post-copulation through sperm competition and/or cryptic female choice. The relative importance of pre- vs. post-copulatory processes remains unknown for most species despite this information being fundamental for understanding the evolutionary consequences of sexual selection. The Australian fruit fly Drosophila serrata has become a prominent model system for studying precopulatory sexual selection, such as mating preferences and their influence on the evolution of sexually selected traits. Here, we investigated polyandry and the potential for post-copulatory sexual selection in this species using indirect paternity analysis. We genotyped 21 wild-caught and 19 laboratory-reared mothers and their offspring (a total of 787 flies) at six microsatellite loci and found extensive polyandry, with all broods surveyed having at least two sires. Female remating rates were higher than in other Drosophila surveyed to date and no significant differences were found between laboratory and field populations. Additionally, we found evidence for biased sperm usage in several broods of D. serrata . Paternity skew occurred more frequently in broods from the field population than the laboratory one, suggesting differences between the two environments in the level of post-copulatory sexual selection. Our data suggest that D. serrata represents a promising system for studying the interaction between pre- and post-copulatory sexual selection in driving the evolution of sexually selected phenotypes.  相似文献

Summary During the last decade, the mating systems of many bird species have been analysed using molecular genetic methods. Most of these studies were performed on Passeriformes while Non-Passeriformes were rarely investigated. To fill this gap, we analysed blood samples of 24 Common Gull (Larus canus) families from two Polish colonies using DNA fingerprinting. A total of 55 of 56 chicks was unequivocally assigned to their genetic parents. Only two of these chicks (3.6%) from two different broods resulted from extra-pair copulations, the other 53 could be attributed to the putative parents; i.e., intraspecific brood parasitism was not observed. With respect to the number of breeding pairs investigated, the frequency of extra-pair paternity amounted to 8.3%. Thus, extra-pair paternity is relatively infrequent compared to other bird species. This result is surprising because the percentage of observed extra-pair copulations (i.e., mainly forced copulations in Common Gulls) in relation to the absolute number of copulations was 15.7% in the colonies studied. A possible reason for the disproportionate number of forced copulations and the lower percentage of resulting extra-pair young may include different mechanisms for paternity control by the pair males and/or by females.
Niedriger Anteil von Vaterschaften außerhalb des Paarbundes bei Sturmmöwen (Larus canus)
Zusammenfassung In den letzten 10 Jahren wurde das Paarungssystem vieler Vogelarten auch mit Hilfe molekulargenetischer Methoden näher untersucht. Dabei standen vor allem verschiedene Singvogelarten im Vordergrund, während Nicht-Singvogelarten kaum berücksichtigt wurden. Die vorliegende Untersuchung an Sturmmöwen (Larus canus) soll helfen diese Lücke zu schließen. Hierzu wurden die Blutproben von 24 Sturmmöwenfamilien zweier polnischer Kolonien mit Hilfe des genetischen Fingerabdruckverfahrens untersucht. Bei 55 der 56 untersuchten Küken konnten eindeutige Aussagen zur Elternschaft gemacht werden. Nur zwei Küken (3,6%) aus zwei unterschiedlichen Bruten gingen auf Kopulationen außerhalb des Paarbundes zurück, die restlichen 53 stammten von den sozialen Eltern ab, d. h. Fälle von innerartlichem Brutparasitismus konnten nicht nachgewiesen werden. In bezug auf den prozentualen Anteil an Brutpaaren, deren Bruten Jungtiere enthielten, die das Resultat von Kopulationen außerhalb des Paarbundes waren, ergab sich ein Wert von 8,3%. Dieser Wert ist im Vergleich mit anderen Vogelarten sehr niedrig. Der geringe Anteil an Vaterschaften außerhalb des Paarbundes verwundert, da der Anteil von Kopulationen außerhalb des Paarbundes, die von den Männchen bei Sturmmöwen meist gewaltsam erzwungen werden, im Vergleich zur Gesamtzahl beobachteter Kopulationen in den untersuchten Kolonien 15,7% betrug und damit deutlich höher lag, als dies auf der Basis der Ergebnisse der DNA-Fingerprinting Untersuchungen zu erwarten gewesen wäre. Mögliche Gründe für die Diskrepanz zwischen dem Anteil der erzwungenen Kopulationen außerhalb des Paarbundes und dem Anteil der resultierenden Küken sind verschiedene Mechanismen der Vaterschaftskontrolle durch die Paarmännchen und/oder durch die Weibchen.

It is commonly assumed that the intensity of sexual selectionis lower in island populations. Extrapair paternity (EPP) iswidespread within passerine birds and is indicative of sexualselection. A conservative analysis of the levels of EPP inisland and equivalent mainland populations of passerines revealsthat insular populations are indeed characterized by low levelsof EPP. This supports the idea that the intensity of sexualselection is lower on islands. This relationship has previouslybeen predicted, based on the assumption of low levels of geneticvariation for fitness in such populations. The evidence fromthis analysis suggests that this is just one of several nonmutuallyexclusive hypotheses that may explain the high fidelity of island-living females.  相似文献
