GRAPES computes individual and global analyses of variance for sensory profiling data, consisting of several sessions in which all the panelists gave scores to all the products for a number of attributes. The fitted model takes into account the session effect. GRAPES summarizes the results by means of graphical assessor scatterplots which allow to check and to compare panelist performances, such as the way of using scale, the reliability, the discrimination power and the agreement with the panel. In addition, GRAPES detects the outliers for each of these criterion. The usefulness of GRAPES for the panel leader will be demonstrated using texture and flavor profiling of 4 restructured steaks by 12 assessors for 15 attributes. The SAS® program GRAPES, available by e-mail from the author, requires the SAS/BASE®, SAS/STAT®, SAS/GRAPH® and SAS/IML® softwares.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate whether the sensory performance of assessors in a sensory panel maybe explained by complexity of evaluated product. We aimed to investigate whether we could observe a decline in sensory performance when increasing the complexity of the product. The products increased in number of constituents from mixtures of sucrose, sodium chloride, citric acid and caffeine in water, to the foods ice tea and tomato soup constituting different levels of the same substances. Candidates who succeeded evaluating one product were not always successful evaluating others. Few subjects were successful in everything. The conclusion was that there is only minor systematic decline with increasing complexity of products. The authors emphasize that definition of complexity involves more than just counting number of constituents and taste sensations, and suggest that minor differences in the task given to the assessor might explain different performances.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS


Practical use of the research presented in the present paper is in a sensory evaluation context. It is important for the users of sensory data to find out how the profiling should be organized to achieve optimum output, and in specific, the need for extensive training when dealing with a more complex product. The present study hypothesized that sensory assessors would have more difficulties evaluating a more complex product. However, the results showed that panel leaders should be more concerned with the task variables in the sensory evaluation. Even a minor shift in task variables had a stronger impact on the performance and reliability of the assessors than increasing number of constituents and/or stimuli sensations of the product. This study did not demonstrate a need for extensive training when dealing with a more complex product as hypothesized.  相似文献

Aim, Scope and Background  When materials are recycled they are made available for use for several future life cycles and can therefore replace virgin material more than just once. In order to analyse the optimal waste management system for a given material, the authors have analysed the material flows in a life cycle perspective. It is important to distinguish this approach for material flow analysis for a given material from life cycle analysis of products. A product life cycle analysis analyses the product system from cradle to grave, but uses some form of allocation in order to separate the life cycle of one product from another in cases where component materials are recycled. This paper does not address allocation of burdens between different product systems, but rather focuses on methodology for decision making for waste management systems where the optimal waste management system for a given material is analysed. The focus here is the flow of the given material from cradle (raw material extraction) to grave (the material, or its inherent energy, is no longer available for use). The limitation on the number of times materials can be recycled is set by either the recycling rate, or the technical properties of the recycled material. Main Features  This article describes a mathematical geometric progression approach that can be used to expand the system boundaries and allow for recycling a given number of times. Case studies for polyethylene and paperboard are used to illustrate the importance of including these aspects when part of the Goal and Scope for the LCA study is to identify which waste management treatment options are best for a given material. The results and discussion examine the different conclusions that can be reached about which waste management option is most environmentally beneficial when the higher burdens and benefits of recycling several times are taken into account. Results  In order to assess the complete picture of the burdens and benefits arising from recycling the system boundaries must be expanded to allow for recycling many times. A mathematical geometric progression approach manages to take into account the higher burdens and benefits arising from recycling several times. If one compares different waste management systems, e.g. energy recovery with recycling, without expanding the system to include the complete effects of material recycling one can reach a different conclusion about which waste management option is preferred. Conclusions  When the purpose of the study is to compare different waste management options, it is important that the system boundaries are expanded in order to include several recycling loops where this is a physical reality. The equations given in this article can be used to include these recycling loops. The error introduced by not expanding the system boundaries can be significant. This error can be large enough to change the conclusions of a comparative study, such that material recycling followed by incineration is a much better option than waste incineration directly. Recommendations and Outlook  When comparing waste management solutions, where material recycling is a feasible option, it is important to include the relevant number of recycling loops to ensure that the benefits of material recycling are not underestimated. The methodology presented in this article should be used in future comparative studies for strategic decision-making for waste management. The approach should not be used for LCAs for product systems without due care, as this could lead to double counting of the benefits of recycling (depending on the goal and scope of the analysis). For materials where the material cycle is more of a closed loop and one cannot truly say that recycled materials replace virgin materials, a more sophisticated approach will be required, taking into account the fact that recycled materials will only replace a certain proportion of virgin materials.  相似文献

Mass customization strategies could be usefully deployed by companies whose products are characterized by a modular design. Typically, each module serves a specific aspect of the overall product function at varying performance levels. Each product variant (constructed through a unique combination of modular performance levels), therefore, serves to customize the overall performance of the product, thus serving the unique needs of each customer. The high demand for each module guarantees economies of scale and, eventually, low cost to customer. The rationale of configuring production processes for producing individual product variants originates from the fact that massive process data is commonly available in a firm and there exists a generic process structure underlying the production of similar products in a family. To design a decision support mechanism that constructs process configuration corresponding to a given product configuration, this paper develops a formal modeling of process variety using Petri nets. Object-oriented Petri nets (PNs) with changeable structures (OPNs-CS) are applied to deal with the issues of generic representation, constraints compliance, and operational sequence requirements. Object-oriented PN (OPN) models facilitate generic representation of product and process variety as well as their instantiations. The OPNs-CS model is tested with simulation. Based on simulation results, the optimal configuration of production processes can be determined for each individual product as well as the cohort of a product family. To illustrate the feasibility and potential of OPNs-CS based process variety modeling, a case study of process configuration for mass customized textile spindles is reported.  相似文献

This mini-review describes the concept of the green biorefinery and lists a number of suitable agricultural by-products, which can be used for production of bioenergy and/or biochemicals. A process, in which one possible agricultural by-product from the green crop drying industry, brown juice, is converted to a basic, universal fermentation medium by lactic acid fermentation, is outlined. The resulting all-round fermentation medium can be used for the production of many useful fermentation products when added a carbohydrate source, which could possibly be another agricultural by-product. Two examples of such products—polylactic acid and l-lysine—are given. A cost calculation shows that this fermentation medium can be produced at a very low cost ≈1.7 Euro cent/kg, when taking into account that the green crop industry has expenses amounting to 270,000 Euro/year for disposal of the brown juice. A newly built lysine factory in Esbjerg, Denmark, can benefit from this process by buying a low price medium for the fermentation process instead of more expensive traditional fermentation liquids such as corn steep liquor.  相似文献

Recent experiments showed that the bio-mechanical ease and end-point stability associated to reaching movements are predicted prior to movement onset, and that these factors exert a significant influence on the choice of movement. As an extension of these results, here we investigate whether the knowledge about biomechanical costs and their influence on decision-making are the result of an adaptation process taking place during each experimental session or whether this knowledge was learned at an earlier stage of development. Specifically, we analysed both the pattern of decision-making and its fluctuations during each session, of several human subjects making free choices between two reaching movements that varied in path distance (target relative distance), biomechanical cost, aiming accuracy and stopping requirement. Our main result shows that the effect of biomechanics is well established at the start of the session, and that, consequently, the learning of biomechanical costs in decision-making occurred at an earlier stage of development. As a means to characterise the dynamics of this learning process, we also developed a model-based reinforcement learning model, which generates a possible account of how biomechanics may be incorporated into the motor plan to select between reaching movements. Results obtained in simulation showed that, after some pre-training corresponding to a motor babbling phase, the model can reproduce the subjects’ overall movement preferences. Although preliminary, this supports that the knowledge about biomechanical costs may have been learned in this manner, and supports the hypothesis that the fluctuations observed in the subjects’ behaviour may adapt in a similar fashion.  相似文献

While the insect fragment count is currently the primary test used for assessing insect contamination of food products, this technique is very problematical for assaying microalgal materials. An account is given of a new immunoassay technique,which is based on an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) detection of insect myosin and which provides a rapid and convenient means of quantitatively determining the amount of insect contamination in algal product samples with a high degree of replicability. Up to 30 samples can be tested in duplicate in 2.5–3 h. Experiments were carried out with a variety of common contaminant insects of algal products, using various life stages, including Corixidae, Ephydridaeand Chironomidae using both Spirulina (Arthrospira) and Chlorella as typical algal materials. As little as one insect per 50 g sample can readily be detected, with excellent correlation (r2 = 0.99) between the number of insects present and the color produced. A matrix analysis to determine the ruggedness of the immunoassay was carried out following the protocols of the AOAC International and established that minor departures in seven variables from the standard assay resulted in no substantial differences. The insect myosin assay offers a quantitative and reliable means for assessing insect contamination of algal materials and should be considered for adoption as a standard method for this type of product. An algorithm is proposed that allows one to identify the MHD mode structure in toroidal plasmas by processing signals from Mirnov probes measuring plasma MHD activity. The algorithm differs fundamentally from the diagnostic methods presently used in tokamaks, being simpler and more efficient. The algorithm is based on constructing an analytic signal using the Hilbert transformation of the Mirnov signals at a given instant. The phase and amplitude dependences obtained take into account the toroidal effects and allow one to determine the number and amplitude of the excited MHD mode. The algorithm was approbated with both test signals and actual signals from MHD diagnostics in the T-10 tokamak. It is demonstrated that the algorithm can be used to analyze single-mode MHD instabilities in toroidal plasmas.  相似文献

While behavioral responses of individual organisms can be predicted with optimal foraging theory, the theory of how individual behavior feeds back to population and ecosystem dynamics has not been fully explored. Ecological models of trophic interactions incorporating behavior of entire populations commonly assume either that populations act as one when making decisions, that behavior is slowly varying or that non-linear effects are negligible in behavioral choices at the population scale. Here, we scale from individual optimal behavior to ecosystem structure in a classic tri-trophic chain where both prey and predators adapt their behavior in response to food availability and predation risk. Behavior is modeled as playing the field, with both consumers and predators behaving optimally at every instant basing their choices on the average population behavior. We establish uniqueness of the Nash equilibrium, and find it numerically. By modeling the interactions as playing the field, we can perform instantaneous optimization at the individual level while taking the entire population into account. We find that optimal behavior essentially removes the effect of top-down forcing at the population level, while drastically changing the behavior. Bottom-up forcing is found to increase populations at all trophic levels. These phenomena both appear to be driven by an emerging constant consumption rate, corresponding to a partial satiation. In addition, we find that a Type III functional response arises from a Type II response for both predators and consumers when their behavior follows the Nash equilibrium, showing that this is a general phenomenon. Our approach is general and computationally efficient and can be used to account for behavior in population dynamics with fast behavioral responses.  相似文献

A major limitation of the well-known matrix method treatment of linear polymer systems is the large size of the transfer matrix required to account simultaneously for such factors as polymer conformation, polymer sequence, ligand binding, etc. This paper shows how to combine such factors by using a direct product of small matrices, one for each factor, to generate the large transfer matrix. The properties of the direct product operation can be used to simplify considerably the calculation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the transfer matrix. This permits one to develop fairly simply the statistical thermodynamics of relatively complicated macromolecular binding systems involving a large number of states for the individual polymer sites. Applications include treatments of sequence-specific binding of ligands, sequence-specific conformational changes, and the combination of the two processes.  相似文献

A study concerning an operant conditioning of albino rats over a period of 6 months showed that different subjects progressively adopted a highly stable behaviour which could be called a ‘strategy’. Each one of these ‘strategies’ enables the subject to obtain, in a defined manner, a certain number of reinforcements within a given period; despite their different efficiencies, each one of these ‘strategies’ can be considered as ‘correct’. We have shown here that the duration of the conditioning session and the mean yield per stimulus depend on the choice of a given ‘strategy’.  相似文献

The performance of gene-predicting tools varies considerably if evaluated with respect to the parameters sensitivity and specificity or their capability to identify the correct start codon. We were interested to validate tools for gene prediction and to implement a metatool named YACOP, which combines existing tools and has a higher performance. YACOP parses and combines the output of the three gene-predicting systems Criticia, Glimmer and ZCURVE. It outperforms each of the programs tested with its high sensitivity and specificity values combined with a larger number of correctly predicted gene starts. Performance of YACOP and the gene-finding programs was tested by comparing their output with a carefully selected set of annotated genomes. We found that the problem of identifying genes in prokaryotic genomes by means of computational analysis was solved satisfactorily. In contrast, the correct localization of the start codon still appeared to be a problem, as in all cases under test at least 7.8% and up to 32.3% of the positions given in the annotations differed from the locus predicted by any of the programs tested. The MMSOM identification method, which had been presented by the authors, is improved to the multiple modeling by the irregular self-organizing map (MMISOM) using the irregular SOM (ISOM). Inputs to the neural networks are parameters of the instantaneous model computed adaptively at every instant. The neural network learns these models. The reference vectors of its output nodes are estimation of the parameters of the local models. At every instant, the model with closest output to the plant output is selected as the model of the plant. ISOM used in this paper is a graph of all the nodes and some of the weighted links between them to make a minimum spanning tree graph. It is shown in this paper that it is possible to add new models if the number of models is initially less than the appropriate one. This experiment tested the proposal that events taking place before a rat has access to a taste can proactively interfere with acquisition of an aversion to the taste when this has been followed by lithium chloride injection. Rats were initially given context discrimination whereby placement in one distinctive context (target) was followed by lithium injection, while placement in a second context (safe) was followed by saline injection. In the subsequent 1-trial taste conditioning session, rats were first placed in either their target context (Blocking group), their safe context (Control-Safe group) or a neutral context (Control-Neutral group), then given access to sucrose and 30 min later were injected with lithium. Subsequent tests of sucrose intakes revealed a blocking effect. These results indicate that proactive interference with taste aversion learning by a context can occur that is unlikely to be based on generalization decrement.  相似文献

Same day PCR amplification and sequencing is desired in situations where one needs to sequence a number of PCR products. The rapid, high-yield purification of PCR products via the use of high performance, anion-exchange chromatography yields sequencing results comparable to those obtained from techniques requiring subcloning of the PCR product. This can be achieved by standard dideoxynucleotide sequencing technology without the need to prepare prelabeled primers and additional internal primers or to gel purify the PCR product. In addition, this chromatographic technique offers the potential of isolating several PCR products from the same amplification mixture.  相似文献
