Exclusion barriers were used to manipulate numbers of polyphagous invertebrate predators so that their impact on cereal aphids and consequently wheat yield and quality could be examined. Experiments were conducted within the framework of the LINK Integrated Farming Systems Project which allowed comparisons to be made between the integrated and conventional farming systems under examination on a study farm in Hampshire, UK. Only in 1995 were the numbers of aphids per tiller, the aphid peak and rate of increase to the peak significantly greater in the exclusion areas where the density of polyphagous predators had been reduced. The maximum increase in aphids as a result of excluding polyphagous predators was 31%, which was equivalent to 130 aphid days. However, the polyphagous predators did not reduce the number of tillers infested. The relatively low impact of polyphagous predators was attributed to the aphid population phenology and greater effects may have been found had aphids infested the crops earlier in their development. Sowing date was shown to govern the time over which a crop may be susceptible to yield loss from aphids, with later-drilled crops being more susceptible to late-summer aphid infestations. Aphid numbers rarely affected grain yield but were found to be related to some grain quality parameters, but reducing polyphagous predators had no direct impact on grain yield or quality even where the aphid burden increased. The peak period of activity and density differed between the species of Carabidae, Staphylinidae and Araneae consequently influencing their relationship with the aphids. Some negative correlations were found between these groups of polyphagous predators and aphids. Species composition and abundance differed between fields thereby influencing the level of aphid predation. The exclusion barriers were most effective at reducing numbers of Carabidae although numbers of Staphylinidae and Araneae were also reduced. The consequences for Integrated Crop Management are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Analysis of changes in numbers of the lime aphid, Eucallipterus tiliae L., reveals that there is an overcompensated density dependent factor acting within years, and an inverse density dependent factor acting between years. Because of its effect on the aphid's rate of development and reproduction the variation in temperature from year to year acts as a density disturbing factor. There is no evidence from laboratory experiments to suggest that the quality of its food influences the numbers of the lime aphid. However, qualitative changes in the aphid following period of aphid abundance are shown to be important in the overcompensated density dependent response. The more prevalent insect predators influence the regulating process as they eat most of the aphids that remain after an aphid population has declined from a very high level of abundance. Their action results in a more overcompensated response than would occur in their absence.  相似文献

Microbial endosymbionts alter the phenotype of their host which may have cascading effects at both population and community levels. However, we currently lack information on whether the effects of viruses on both host phenotypic traits and host population demography can modify interactions with upper trophic levels. To fill this gap, we investigated whether a prevalent densovirus infecting the aphid Myzus persicae (i.e. MpDNV) can modify trophic interactions between host aphids and their natural enemies (i.e. predators and parasitoids) by influencing aphid phenotypic traits (i.e. body mass and defensive behaviours), population demography (i.e. density and age-structure) and susceptibility towards both predation and parasitism. We found that the virus decreased aphid body mass but did not influence their behavioural defences. At the population level, the virus had a minor effect on aphid adult mortality whereas it strongly reduced the density of nymphs and influenced the stage structure of aphid populations. In addition, the virus enhanced the susceptibility of aphids to parasitism regardless of the parasitoid species. Predation rate on adult aphids was not influenced by the virus but ladybeetle predators strongly decreased the number of aphid nymphs, especially for uninfected ones compared to infected ones. As a result, the virus decreased predator effect on aphid populations. By reducing both aphid quality and availability, increasing their susceptibility to parasitism, and modulating predator effect on aphid populations, we highlighted that viral endosymbionts can be prevalent drivers of their host ecology as they modify their phenotypes and interspecific interactions. These virus-mediated ecological effects may have consequences on enemies foraging strategies as well as trophic webs dynamics and structure.  相似文献

Density-dependent mutualisms have been well documented, but the behavioral mechanisms that can produce such interactions are not as well understood. We investigated interactions between predatory ladybirds and the ant Lasius neoniger, which engages in a facultative association with the aphid Aphis fabae . We found that ants disrupted predator aggregation and deterred foraging, but that this effect varied with aphid density. In the field, smaller aphid colonies had higher numbers of ants per aphid (higher relative ant density), whereas plants with larger aphid colonies had lower relative ant density. Ants deterred ladybird foraging when relative ant density was high, but when relative ant density was low, ladybirds aggregated to aphids and foraged more successfully. This difference in ladybird foraging success appeared to be driven by variation in the ants' distribution on the plant and the ladybirds' reaction to ants. When relative ant density was high, ants moved around the perimeter of the aphid colonies, which resulted in faster detection of predators and a greater likelihood of ladybirds leaving. However, when relative ant density was low, ants moved only in the midst of the aphid colonies and rarely around the perimeter, which allowed predators to approach the aphid colony from the perimeter and feed without detection. Such predators were less likely to leave the aphid colony when subsequently detected by ants. We suggest that differences in relative ant numbers, ant distribution, and predator reaction to detection by ants could lead to complex population-level consequences including density-dependent mutualisms and the possibility that predators act as prudent predators.  相似文献

In a field trial, done over two seasons, nitrogen and fungicide inputs to winter wheat were varied to obtain a range of yields to study the effects on aphid population development and the aphid-yield loss relationship. In the first year, the maximum density of Metopolophium dirhodum and total aphid index were significantly higher in the plots receiving the largest amount of nitrogen but there were few other consistent effects on aphid population development. In the second year there were no significant effects of either nitrogen or fungicide on aphid population development. Mean yields were high in 1987 and 1988 (7.0 and 8.5 t/ha respectively) with less than a 2 t/ha range in either year. There were no significant effects of aphids on yield in the first year but in the second, aphids caused a significant reduction. Damage per aphid unit did not change with increase in yield. The use of this approach in determining pest-yield loss relationships is discussed.  相似文献

Herbivore dynamics and community structure are influenced both by plant quality and the actions of natural enemies. A factorial experiment manipulating both higher and lower trophic levels was designed to explore the determinants of colony growth of the aphid Aphis jacobaeae, a specialist herbivore on ragwort Senecio jacobaea. Potential plant quality was manipulated by regular addition of NPK-fertiliser and predator pressure was reduced by interception traps; the experiment was carried out at two sites. The size and persistence of aphid colonies were measured. Fertiliser addition affected plant growth in only one site, but never had a measurable effect on aphid colony growth. In both habitats the action of insect predators dominated, imposing strong and negative effects on aphid colony performance. Ants were left unmanipulated in both sites and their performance on the aphid colonies did not significantly differ between sites or between treatments. Our results suggest that, at least for aphid herbivores on S. jacobaea, the action of generalist insect predators appears to be the dominant factor affecting colony performance and can under certain conditions even improve plant productivity.  相似文献

A 2‐year field experiment was conducted in northern Illinois to evaluate the effects of host plant resistance and an insecticidal seed treatment (thiamethoxam) on soybean aphids, Aphis glycines Matsumura and their predators. Densities of soybean aphids varied between the 2 years of the experiment. During both years, resistant plants experienced fewer cumulative aphid days than susceptible plants. Populations of soybean aphids on resistant plants rarely exceeded the economic injury level of 250 soybean aphids per plant. The use of thiamethoxam reduced cumulative aphid days in 2007, but not in 2008. Although soybean aphids reached densities that were sufficient to cause yield‐loss for untreated and susceptible plants, no yield‐benefit was associated with using the two management tactics in either year. This latter finding suggests that densities of soybean aphids need to be greater and sustained for a longer period of time than what we observed if the two management tactics are expected to provide a yield‐benefit. Monitoring natural enemies revealed that densities of key aphidophagous predators were relatively unaffected by host plant resistance or thiamethoxam; the effect of these management tactics on densities of predators, as well as the effectiveness of the method used to sample predators, is discussed.  相似文献

Intraguild predation (IGP) occurs when consumers competing for a resource also engage in predatory interactions. A common type of IGP involves aphid predators and parasitoids: since parasitoid offspring develop within aphid hosts, they are particularly vulnerable to predation by aphid predators such as coccinellid beetles. Other intraguild interactions that include non-lethal behavioral effects, such as interference with foraging and avoidance of IGP, may also hamper parasitoid activity and reduce their effectiveness as biological control agents. In this study, we quantified mortality in and behavioral effects on Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) by its IG-predator Coccinella undecimpunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), and compared the impact of two release ratios of these natural enemies on aphid populations. Parasitoids did not leave the plant onto which they were first introduced, regardless of the presence of predators, even when alternative prey was offered on predator-free plants nearby. In 2-hour experiments, predator larvae interfered with wasp activity, and the level of aphid parasitism was lower in the presence of predators than in their absence. In these experiments, the parasitoids contributed more to aphid mortality than the predators and aphid suppression was higher when a parasitoid acted alone than in combination with a predator larva. These results were confirmed in a 5-day experiment, but only at one parasitoid:predator release ratio (4:3) not another (2:3). The over-all impact on aphid population growth was non-the-less stronger when both enemies acted together than when only one of them was present. Results indicate that for given release ratios and time scale, the negative lethal and non-lethal effects of the predator on parasitoid performance did not fully cancelled the direct impact of the predator on the aphid population.  相似文献

Field studies in 1974, 1975 and 1976 investigated integrated control of the damson-hop aphid Phorodon humuli on hops. After the aphicidal effects of an early-season soil drench of mephosfolan had declined, natural enemies controlled the aphids for the remainder of the season. Anthocorid bugs, particularly Anthocoris nemoralis, were the most abundant predators. In each year a rapid decline in aphid numbers occurred in mid- to late-July, coinciding with the peak numbers of fourth and fifth instar larvae and adults, the most voracious anthocorid stages. Aphids in the cones remained under control for the rest of the season in 1974 and 1975, and increased in 1976 but damaging numbers did not develop. When predators were excluded by caging mephosfolan-treated bines, high aphid densities developed on the leaves, and the cones were heavily infested. Plants not treated with an insecticide were almost completely defoliated by late-July. Heavily infested ‘missed bines’, due to uneven uptake of mephosfolan, attracted large numbers of anthocorids, which later dispersed into the surrounding plants.  相似文献

Spirea aphid populations and their predators were studied on apple to identify predators of importance in controlling aphid populations. Methods included random and non-random sampling from apple orchards in West Virginia, USA, sentinel aphid colonies, laboratory feeding studies, and predator exclusion studies. Aphidoletes aphidimyza (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), chrysopids (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae), Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), and Orius insidiosus (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) were the most abundant predators associated with spirea aphid colonies on apple. Parasitoids were all but absent in the study. Abundance of all predators was density dependent with greater responses to aphid populations at the orchard scale than to tree or individual colony scales. A. aphidimyza, O. insidiosus, chrysopids, and syrphids (Diptera) had the greatest degree of density dependence on aphid populations, and spiders showed inverse density dependence. Exclusion of predators with both cages and insecticides produced significantly higher aphid populations. Because of high abundance, good synchrony with aphid populations, and high impact per individual, H. axyridis adults were the most important spirea aphid predator on apple.  相似文献

Ant‐hemipteran mutualisms are keystone interactions that can be variously affected by warming: these mutualisms can be strengthened or weakened, or the species can transition to new mutualist partners. We examined the effects of elevated temperatures on an ant‐aphid mutualism in the subalpine zone of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, USA. In this system, inflorescences of the host plant, Ligusticum porteri Coult. & Rose (Apiaceae), are colonized by the ant‐tended aphid Aphis asclepiadis Fitch or less frequently by the non‐ant tended aphid Cavariella aegopodii (Scopoli) (both Hemiptera: Aphididae). Using an 8‐year observational study, we tested for two key mechanisms by which ant‐hemipteran mutualisms may be altered by climate change: shifts in species identity and phenological mismatch. Whereas the aphid species colonizing the host plant is not changing in response to year‐to‐year variation in temperature, we found evidence that a phenological mismatch between ants and aphids could occur. In warmer years, colonization of host plant inflorescences by ants is decreased, whereas for A. asclepiadis aphids, host plant colonization is mostly responsive to date of snowmelt. We also experimentally established A. asclepiadis colonies on replicate host plants at ambient and elevated temperatures. Ant abundance did not differ between aphid colonies at ambient vs. elevated temperatures, but ants were less likely to engage in tending behaviors on aphid colonies at elevated temperatures. Sugar composition of aphid honeydew was also altered by experimental warming. Despite reduced tending by ants, aphid colonies at elevated temperatures had fewer intraguild predators. Altogether, our results suggest that higher temperatures may disrupt this ant‐aphid mutualism through both phenological mismatch and by altering benefits exchanged in the interaction.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out in 1981-83 to assess the impact of polyphagous predators (e.g. Carabidae, Staphylinidae and Araneae) on populations of cereal aphids in spring barley in Sweden. Barriers were erected around mid-field and field-edge plots at different times during the aphids' establishment phase in order to manipulate the predation pressure during the aphid pre-peak period; predators were emigrating from field boundaries. Rhopalosiphum padi was the dominant species of cereal aphid in 1981 and 1982, and was abundant in both years. Reduction of the predation pressure resulted in R. padi populations that were two to six times larger compared with those in unenclosed control plots. Aphid populations were much larger when the predation pressure was reduced earlier in June than when this was done later, in both years, since late erection of barriers excludes fewer predators because most had already entered the enclosed areas. In 1983, R. padi and Sitobion avenae were equally common but occurred in low numbers, and the effects of reducing the predation pressure were less obvious. Bembidion spp. (B. lampros and B. quadrimaculatum) and linyphiid spiders were the most abundant predators during the early establishment phase of aphid populations in each year, and significant inverse correlations were found between peak numbers of R. padi per shoot and numbers of predators from these taxa in 1981 and 1982. Similar relationships were found between total aphids and numbers of Staphylinidae, B. quadrimaculatum and Coccinella septempunctata in 1983. It was concluded that differences between the manipulated numbers of polyphagous predators caused the observed differences in peak population levels of R.padiin 1981,1982 and to a lesser extent, 1983. Apparent levels of parasitism and fungal disease were low during the pre-peak period. Aphid specific predators, abundant after the peak, were considered partly responsible for the decline of aphid populations each year. The results are compared with those from similar experiments elsewhere with S. avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum in winter wheat. Reasons why the effects of polyphagous predators are greater, and occur over a much shorter period of time in Sweden are discussed.  相似文献

We investigated why two species of aphids (Aphis jacobaeae and Brachycaudus cardui) were very rare in a study site despite their abundance in the surrounding area. The study site contained many common species of aphid and we tested the hypothesis that the community of aphid predators in the field excluded the missing species. Colonies of the two aphid species were artificially initiated in the experimental site and allocated to one of four treatments: control; ground predator exclusion; total predator exclusion, and provision of mutualist ants. Two measures of colony performance were analysed: longevity and cumulative aphid density. Colonies decline naturally in late summer but control colonies disappeared very quickly while colonies protected from all predators survived the longest. The performance of colonies protected from just ground predators was intermediate. We failed to persuade ants to tend A. jacobaeae. Colonies of B. cardui attended by ants performed better than controls and those with ground predators excluded, but not as well as those with all predators excluded. We conclude that the absence of the two species of aphid in the study site is influenced by the resident predator community, and by the availability of mutualists. Understanding how natural assemblages of predators are affected by organic agriculture, and whether these changes can contribute to biological control, is important for the design of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies and sustainable agriculture. The effect of organic management practices on the abundance of the cotton aphid Aphis gossypii and its major predators was evaluated in northwestern China during the cotton‐growing seasons of 2004–2006. The predators of A. gossypii in cotton fields included Coccinellidae (ladybirds), Chrysopidae (lacewings), spiders (Linyphiidae and Thomisidae) and Syrphidae (hoverflies). Higher peak densities and longer persistence of predators in organic fields were found, and the average annual densities of all predators except Chrysopidae adults were higher, on average by 200%, in organic fields than in conventional fields in all 3 years. The abundance of larvae of Coccinellidae, Chrysopidae and Syrphidae was higher in organically managed crops indicating that these predators bred more successfully in organic fields. Although there was a significant difference between A. gossypii abundance in organic and conventional fields each year, taken over the three‐year period as a whole there was no significant difference. This suggests predation by natural enemies in organic fields can achieve the same efficacy in aphid control as pesticides used in conventional fields over the long term, but that predation does not prevent outbreaks of A. gossypii in some years.  相似文献

The restriction of aphid reestablishment onto plants by epigeal predators represents a critical component of integrated pest management. To further realize the potential that these predators might have in control programs, it is necessary to quantify such behavior as aphid falling rate to reveal the number of aphids that are available as potential prey. This study calculated the falling rate of the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Kurdjumov) (Sternorrhyncha: Aphididae), and tested whether this aphid more likely fell from wheat plants that differed between flat leaf architecture versus those with furled leaves. Specifically, the hypothesis was tested that a resistant wheat line (flat leaves) will have a higher aphid falling rate than a susceptible closely related line (furled leaves). The experiment was performed at Fort Collins and Akron, Colorado, USA, from May through July, 2008. Aphids were sampled from infested wheat rows to estimate aphid density, and sticky traps were used to capture falling aphids and to measure falling rate. Falling rates ranged from 0.7 to 69.5% in Fort Collins and from 1.4 to 59.5% in Akron. The falling rate of D. noxia was more influenced by plant growth stage than aphid densities, with the highest falling rate occurring after wheat senescence. Wheat plants with flat leaf architecture did not significantly increase aphid falling rate. Diuraphis noxia falls at a higher rate at lower aphid densities, which is when epigeal predators could have their greatest biological control impact.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of polyphagous predators may often reflect the integration of aggregative responses to local densities of multiple species of prey, and as such may have consequences for the indirect linkages among the prey sharing these predators. In a factorial field experiment in which we manipulated local prey densities within a field of alfalfa in Utah (USA), we tested whether aphidophagous ladybirds would aggregate not only in response to their primary aphid prey, but also in response to an abundant alternative prey, the alfalfa weevil (Hypera postica [Gyllenhal]). Native North American ladybirds (primarily Hippodamia convergens Guerin and H. quinquesignata quinquesignata [Kirby]) responded only to spatial variation in aphid density. In contrast, the introduced ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata L., aggregated also at local concentrations of the weevil late in the experiment when weevil density was high and aphid density was relatively low throughout all experimental plots. The results support the hypothesis that C. septempunctata is more responsive than are native ladybirds to the availability of alternative prey in alfalfa, which may account in part for the displacement of native ladybirds from alfalfa by the introduced species as aphid numbers have declined. The differing responses of the native and introduced ladybirds to spatial patterns of the alternative prey underscore the importance of extending the study of predator aggregation to understand better how polyphagous predators distribute themselves in response to spatial patterns of multiple species of potential prey.  相似文献

Species abundance is typically determined by the abiotic environment, but the extent to which such effects occur through the mediation of biotic interactions, including mutualisms, is unknown. We explored how light environment (open meadow vs. shaded understory) mediates the abundance and ant tending of the aphid Aphis helianthi feeding on the herb Ligusticum porteri. Yearly surveys consistently found aphids to be more than 17‐fold more abundant on open meadow plants than on shaded understory plants. Manipulations demonstrated that this abundance pattern was not due to the direct effects of light environment on aphid performance, or indirectly through host plant quality or the effects of predators. Instead, open meadows had higher ant abundance and per capita rates of aphid tending and, accordingly, ants increased aphid population growth in meadow but not understory environments. The abiotic environment thus drives the abundance of this herbivore exclusively through the mediation of a protection mutualism.  相似文献

Summary The two aphid species feeding on goldenrod (Solidago altissima) in northern Florida (U.S.A.) exhibited behavioral differences that resulted in characteristic spatial patterns. Uroleucon nigrotuberculatum alates (winged forms) aggregated when colonizing stems and subsequent non-winged generations were relatively sedentary, resulting in a clumped spatial pattern. U. tissoti colonized stems singly and was more mobile; these behaviors resulted in its more random spatial pattern within fields of goldenrod.Manipulations of aphid density in the field revealed that although patches with high densities of aphids accumulated more predators than patches with few aphids, predation pressure (measured as number of predators per aphid) was lower in dense patches. As a result, aphids in dense patches had a higher per capita change in density than aphids in sparse patches. However, when the fungal pathogen, Neozygites fresenii, became the dominant mortality agent, the influence of aphid density on mortality was reversed; aphids in dense patches were then more vulnerable than aphids in sparse patches. Thus the spatial patterns exhibited by the U. nigrotuberculatum and U. tissoti resulted in differences in their relative vulnerability to different natural enemies.  相似文献
