Herbivores have diverse impacts on their host plants, potentially altering survival, growth, fecundity, and other aspects of plant performance. Especially for longer-lived plant species, the effects of a single herbivore species can vary markedly throughout the life of the host plant. In addition, the effects of herbivory during any given life history stage of a host plant may also vary considerably with different types of herbivores. To investigate the effects of herbivory by black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) and snails (Helminthoglypta arrosa and Helix aspersa) on a nitrogen-fixing shrub, Lupinus chamissonis, we established three exclosure experiments in a sand dune system on the coast of northern California. These experiments documented that deer browsing significantly reduced the volume and growth rate of lupines in the seedling and juvenile life stages. Since plant volume was strongly correlated with aboveground dry biomass for lupines, such herbivore-induced reductions in volume should translate into losses of aboveground biomass. Deer browsing also significantly altered the likelihood of attack by and density of a leaf-galling cecidomyid fly (Dasineura lupinorum), suggesting that a vertebrate herbivore indirectly affected an invertebrate herbivore in this system. Although deer did not significantly affect the survival of lupine seedlings and juveniles, individuals protected from deer had consistently greater survival in the two separate experiments. Our results revealed that snails did not have a significant effect on the survival or growth of juvenile plants, despite being common on and around lupines. An exclosure experiment revealed that herbivory by deer significantly reduced the shoot lengths of mature shrubs, but led only to a minimal reduction in growth rates. In addition, we found that browsed shrubs had significantly greater inflorescence production, but also produced individual seeds with significantly reduced mass. Collectively, these data indicate that deer and snails have widely differing effects on their shared host plant; browsing by deer indirectly affects insect herbivores, and the impacts of deer change markedly with the life history stage of their host plant.  相似文献

In this study we investigated the potential importance of species identity and herbivore feeding mode in determining the strengths of top-down and bottom-up effects on phytophagous insect densities. In 1998, we conducted two factorial field experiments in which we manipulated host plant quality and intensity of parasitoid attack on three salt marsh herbivores, the planthoppers Prokelisia marginata and Pissonotus quadripustulatus (Homoptera: Delphacidae), which feed only on Spartina alterniflora and Borrichia frutescens, respectively, and the gall fly Asphondylia borrichiae (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), which feeds only on B. frutescens. We increased plant quality through addition of nitrogen fertilizer, and decreased parasitism by trapping hymenopteran parasitoids continuously throughout the study. Herbivore densities were censused biweekly. Increasing plant quality through fertilization increased the density of all three herbivores within 2 weeks of treatment application, and higher densities were maintained for the duration of the study. Reduction of top-down pressure had no effect on either planthopper species, possibly because of compensatory mortality affecting the two species. In contrast, reduction of parasitism significantly increased the density of A. borrichiae galls, perhaps because development within gall tissue reduces the sources of compensatory mortality affecting this species. The results of this study show that the bottom-up effects of plant quality were strong and consistent for all three species, but the strength of top-down effects differed between the two feeding guilds. Thus, even for herbivores feeding on the same host plant, conclusions drawn regarding the relative importance of top-down and bottom-up effects may vary depending upon the feeding mode of the herbivore.  相似文献

Classic research on elevational gradients in plant–herbivore interactions holds that insect herbivore pressure is stronger under warmer climates of low elevations. However, recent work has questioned this paradigm, arguing that it oversimplifies the ecological complexity in which plant–insect herbivore interactions are embedded. Knowledge of antagonistic networks of plants and herbivores is however crucial for understanding the mechanisms that govern ecosystem functioning. We examined herbivore damage and insect herbivores of eight species of genus Ficus (105 saplings) and plant constitutive defensive traits of two of these species, along a rain forest elevational gradient of Mt. Wilhelm (200–2,700 m a.s.l.), in tropical Papua New Guinea. We report overall herbivore damage 2.4% of leaf area, ranging from 0.03% in Ficus endochaete at 1,700 m a.s.l. to 6.1% in F. hombroniana at 700 m a.s.l. Herbivore damage and herbivore abundances varied significantly with elevation, as well as among the tree species, and between the wet and dry season. Community-wide herbivore damage followed a hump-shaped pattern with the peak between 700 and 1,200 m a.s.l. and this pattern corresponded with abundance of herbivores. For two tree species surveyed in detail, we observed decreasing and hump-shaped patterns in herbivory, in general matching the trends found in the set of plant defenses measured here. Our results imply that vegetation growing at mid-elevations of the elevational gradient, that is at the climatically most favorable elevations where water is abundant, and temperatures still relatively warm, suffers the maximum amount of herbivorous damage which changes seasonally, reflecting the water availability.  相似文献

Induced defences to herbivory are physical, nutritional, and allelochemical traits that change in plants following damage or stress, and that reduce the performance and/or preference of herbivores. The aim of this study was to verify the occurrence and effect of induced responses in Bauhinia brevipes (Vog.) (Leguminosae) which defend it against herbivores, through the manipulation of its leaves, and their effects on herbivore foraging behaviour. We selected 15 plants in the field, and three shoots per plant were subjected to one of three treatments: (1) damaged shoots (simulation of the main types of foliar herbivory and insect exclusion); (2) damaged control shoots (insect exclusion); and (3) control shoots (not manipulated). Water and nitrogen content, tannin concentration, levels of herbivory, and shoot growth rates were compared among treatments. Leaf quality varied among treatments. Damaged leaves showed higher tannin concentration, and lower water and nitrogen content compared to undamaged leaves. On the other hand, they experienced higher rates of herbivory than leaves on control shoots. Moreover, shoots that were experimentally induced showed a higher increase in final shoot length. These results suggest that simulated herbivory on B. brevipes reduced the nutritional quality of its leaves and increased the amount of secondary compounds, therefore altering insect herbivore attack and increasing shoot performance.  相似文献

Interactions between plants and herbivores often vary on a geographic scale. Although theory about plant defenses and tolerance is predicated on temporal or spatial variation in herbivore damage, no single study has compared the pattern of herbivory, plant defenses and tolerance to herbivory of a single species across a latitudinal gradient. In 2002–2005 we surveyed replicate salt marshes along the Atlantic coast of the United States from Florida to Maine. At each field site we scored leaves of Iva frutescens for herbivore damage. In laboratory experiments we measured constitutive resistance and induced resistance in I. frutescens from high and low latitude sites along the Atlantic Coast. In another common garden experiment we studied tolerance to herbivory of I. frutescens from various sites. Theory predicts that constitutive resistance should matter more when damage is high, and induced resistance when herbivory is high but variable. In the field, average levels of herbivore damage, and spatial and temporal variation in herbivore damage were all greater at low versus high latitudes, indicating that constitutive as well as induced resistance should be stronger at low latitudes. Consistent with this prediction, constitutive resistance to herbivory was stronger at low latitudes. Induced resistance to herbivores was also stronger at low latitudes: it was deployed faster and lasted longer. Theory also predicts that tolerance to herbivory should be greater where average herbivory damage is greater; however, tolerance to herbivory in Iva did not depend on geographic origin. Our results emphasize the value of considering multiple ways in which plants respond to herbivores when examining geographic variation in plant–herbivore interactions.  相似文献

The susceptibility of plants to attack by insect herbivores often depends on local environmental conditions. This study documents variation in herbivore damage by the chrysomelid beetle Erynephala maritima to the annual forb Atriplex patula in two microhabitats within New England salt marshes: bare patches and dense matrix vegetation. Environmental conditions within bare patches differ from those within matrix vegetation in a number of ways. Bare patches are characterized by the absence of perennial grasses and rushes (matrix vegetation) and greater levels of physical stress, and are rapidly colonized by the fugitive annual, Salicornia europaea, a second host plant of these beetles. Surveys of herbivore damage across three marshes revealed that A. patula in bare patches had a greater proportion of leaves damaged by beetles than those within matrix vegetation. Presence or absence of matrix vegetation and presence or absence of S. europaea were experimentally manipulated to determine the proximate cause of this pattern. The presence of S. europaea significantly increased the susceptibility of A. patula to herbivory in experimental plots. Both the extent of herbivore damage to plants and the proportion of plants damaged through time were greater in treatments with S. europaea than in controls, regardless of the presence or absence of matrix vegetation. Plants in S. europaea addition treatments were also less likely to survive to reproduction. Decreased survival appears to result from increased herbivory, suggesting that the negative effect of S. europaea on A. patula is mediated indirectly through shared insect herbivores. These results support the hypothesis that indirect interactions between alternative host plants, mediated by insect herbivores, can be important in natural communities. Environmental conditions and plant genotype may influence insect herbivory along elevational gradients. Plant damage would decrease with elevation as temperature declines to suboptimal levels for insects. However, host plants at higher elevations may exhibit traits that either reduce or enhance leaf quality to insects, with uncertain net effects on herbivory. We examined folivory, insect abundance and leaf traits along six replicated elevational ranges in Nothofagus pumilio forests of the northern Patagonian Andes, Argentina. We also conducted a reciprocal transplant experiment between low- and high-elevation sites to test the extent of environmental and plant genetic control on insect abundance and folivory. We found that insect abundance, leaf size and specific leaf area decreased, whereas foliar phosphorous content increased, from low-, through mid- to high-elevation sites. Path analysis indicated that changes in both insect abundance and leaf traits were important in reducing folivory with increasing elevation and decreasing mean temperature. At both planting sites, plants from a low-elevation origin experienced higher damage and supported greater insect loads than plants from a high-elevation origin. The differences in leaf damage between sites were twofold larger than those between plant origins, suggesting that local environment was more important than host genotype in explaining folivory patterns. Different folivore guilds exhibited qualitatively similar responses to elevation. Our results suggest an increase in insect folivory on high-elevation N. pumilio forests under future climate warming scenarios. However, in the short-term, folivory increases might be smaller than expected from insect abundance only because at high elevations herbivores would encounter more resistant tree genotypes.  相似文献

1. Plant responses to herbivore attack may have community‐wide effects on the composition of the plant‐associated insect community. Thereby, plant responses to an early‐season herbivore may have profound consequences for the amount and type of future attack. 2. Here we studied the effect of early‐season herbivory by caterpillars of Pieris rapae on the composition of the insect herbivore community on domesticated Brassica oleracea plants. We compared the effect of herbivory on two cultivars that differ in the degree of susceptibility to herbivores to analyse whether induced plant responses supersede differences caused by constitutive resistance. 3. Early‐season herbivory affected the herbivore community, having contrasting effects on different herbivore species, while these effects were similar on the two cultivars. Generalist insect herbivores avoided plants that had been induced, whereas these plants were colonised preferentially by specialist herbivores belonging to both leaf‐chewing and sap‐sucking guilds. 4. Our results show that community‐wide effects of early‐season herbivory may prevail over effects of constitutive plant resistance. Induced responses triggered by prior herbivory may lead to an increase in susceptibility to the dominant specialists in the herbivorous insect community. The outcome of the balance between contrasting responses of herbivorous community members to induced plants therefore determines whether induced plant responses result in enhanced plant resistance.  相似文献

Insect–plant interactions occur in several ways and have considerable environmental and ecological importance. Many feeding strategies have evolved among herbivorous insects, with host–herbivore systems likely being influenced by trophobionts with ants. We investigated how these interactions vary across elevation gradients by evaluating the structure of the herbivorous insect community and ants associated with Baccharis dracunculifolia at three distinct elevations (800, 1100, and 1400 m a.s.l.) on a mountain in southeastern Brazil. Moreover, we evaluated the diversity and specialisation of interactions between herbivores and host plants along the elevational gradient. We sampled herbivores and ants on 60 plants at each elevation (totalling 180 plant individuals). Herbivore species composition differed among elevations, as did interaction diversity and specialisation. Richness and abundance of chewing insects increased with elevation, while β‐diversity among patches of the host plant was higher at the lowest elevation, probably due to the patchy occurrence of B. dracunculifolia. Richness and abundance of sap‐sucking insects were higher at the intermediate elevation, possibly due to local environmental conditions. We observed a positive relationship between ant and herbivore trophobiont richness on B. dracunculifolia. We found that interactions were more specialised and less diverse at higher elevations compared to the lowest elevation. Changes in vegetation and environmental variables shaped species distributions and their ecological interactions along the elevation gradient. Our study demonstrates that increased elevation changes the structure and patterns of interactions of the herbivore insect guilds associated with the host plant B. dracunculifolia. Ant effects depend on the context, the environment, and the species of ants involved, and are essential for the presence of insect trophobionts.  相似文献

When plants are sequentially attacked by multiple herbivores, herbivore identity and host specialization can greatly influence the patterns of herbivore–herbivore and plant–herbivore interactions. However, how prior herbivory and the resulting induced plant responses potentially affect subsequent herbivores deserves further investigation. In this study, we conducted a common-garden experiment that manipulated sequential herbivory by the specialist caterpillar Gadirtha fusca Pogue (Lepidoptera: Nolidae) and the generalist caterpillar Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on Chinese tallow, Triadica sebifera (L.) Small (Euphorbiaceae). We tested how prior exposure to herbivores with different levels of host specialization affected the performance of subsequently arriving con- and heterospecifics, as well as plant growth and defense responses under subsequent herbivory. We found that prior exposure to the specialist G. fusca facilitated the performance of subsequent conspecifics, resulting in a significant decrease in the growth (height and stem diameter at ground level) of tallow plants. However, prior exposure to the generalist S. litura did not affect the feeding of subsequent con- or heterospecifics or the growth of tallow plants. Sequential herbivory by specialist and generalist conspecifics resulted in lower levels of tannins and flavonoids, respectively, in leaves of tallow plants, whereas sequential herbivory by the two species did not affect the levels of tannins or flavonoids, compared to a single damage event. We conclude that herbivore species-specific plant responses appear to be more important than herbivore identity or specialization in determining herbivore–herbivore interactions and plant responses to sequential herbivore attack.  相似文献

1. Plant responses to herbivory are often specific to the feeding guild of the attacking herbivore. These phytochemical responses to herbivore damage can affect herbivore performance and activity. Comprehensive studies on the ecological consequences of multi‐herbivore plant interactions are key to understanding plant–herbivore community dynamics. 2. This study examined how feeding damage by co‐occurring herbivores from separate feeding guilds, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), a sucking herbivore, and Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), a chewing herbivore, alter plant chemistry and indirectly affect herbivore performance. Performance was measured when each insect fed on plants individually, sequentially, or simultaneously in laboratory and field experiments. Phytohormone and glycoalkaloid content were measured for each feeding sequence to evaluate plant responses to herbivory by each guild. Mid‐season and end‐of‐season tuber yield were evaluated in the field study. 3. Damage by L. decemlineata negatively impacted M. persicae performance in both laboratory and field settings. Damage by M. persicae did not affect L. decemlineata performance in laboratory assays. However, L. decemlineata performance was positively affected by M. persicae herbivory in the field, but this effect was temporary. Although phytohormones and plant defences varied across treatments, they provide little resolution on interaction outcomes. 4. These results confirm that the presence of multiple feeding guilds on a single plant can affect these chewing and sucking herbivores differentially, but given the variability in our phytochemical analyses compared with other studies, the mechanism remains unclear. The study's findings show that aphids are negatively affected by chewing herbivores across systems, while aphids temporarily affected beetles positively.  相似文献

Resource regulation occurs when herbivory maintains or increases plant susceptibility to further herbivory by the same species. A review of the literature indicates it is a widespread plant–animal interaction involving a diverse array of herbivores. At least three mechanisms can produce this positive feedback cycle. First, phytophagous insect and mammalian herbivore damage can stimulate dormant buds to produce vigorous juvenile growth, which is preferred for further attack. Juvenilization cycles may have repeatedly evolved because herbivores are able to take advantage of a generalized plant compensatory response to any type of damage. Second, herbivores can manipulate plant source–sink relationships to attain more resources, and this alteration of plant growth may benefit subsequent herbivore generations. Third, herbivory can alter plant nutrition or defensive chemistry in a way that makes a plant susceptible to more herbivory. Resource regulation probably occurs because damage to resources preferred by the herbivores induces a generalized plant response that produces more preferred resources. Alternatively, manipulation of plant resources to induce resource regulation may have evolved in herbivores with a high degree of philopatry due to selection to alter plant resources to benefit their offspring. Resource regulation can stabilize insect population dynamics by maintaining a supply of high-quality plant resources. It can also increase the heterogeneity of host-plant resources for herbivores by altering the physiological age structure and the distribution of resources within plants. Resource regulation may have strong plant-mediated effects on other organisms that use that host plant, but these effects have not yet been explored.  相似文献

While herbivory is recognized as a fundamental process structuring coral reef communities, herbivore assemblages and processes are poorly described for reefs in the Indian Ocean region. We quantified herbivorous fish assemblage structure (abundance and diversity) in Laamu Atoll, Republic of Maldives, in four reef habitat types: faro reef flats, faro reef slopes, inner and outer atoll reef slopes (20 sites in total). Herbivorous fish assemblages, representing a total of 30 species, grouped strongly by habitat type, with the highest absolute abundance observed on faro reef flats and lowest abundance on inside atoll rim reef slopes. Removal of Thalassia seagrass blades by ambient herbivore assemblages was used in a bioassay to assess relative herbivory pressure among four habitat types (eight sites). Also, at one site a choice herbivory assay was performed to assess herbivore preference among four benthic plants across three depth zones. Relative herbivory, as indicated by Thalassia assays, was highest on inside atoll rim reef slopes and lowest on outside atoll rim reef slopes. Thalassia consumption did not correspond to overall herbivorous fish abundance, but corresponded more closely with parrotfish abundance. In the choice assays, herbivores showed strong preferences among plant types and consumption of most plant types was higher at mid-depth than in the shallow reef flat or deep reef knoll zones.  相似文献

Both the length of the growing season and the intensity of herbivory often vary along climatic gradients, which may result in divergent selection on plant phenology, and on resistance and tolerance to herbivory. In Sweden, the length of the growing season and the number of insect herbivore species feeding on the perennial herb Lythrum salicaria decrease from south to north. Previous common‐garden experiments have shown that northern L. salicaria populations develop aboveground shoots earlier in the summer and finish growth before southern populations do. We tested the hypotheses that resistance and tolerance to damage vary with latitude in L. salicaria and are positively related to the intensity of herbivory in natural populations. We quantified resistance and tolerance of populations sampled along a latitudinal gradient by scoring damage from natural herbivores and fitness in a common‐garden experiment in the field and by documenting oviposition and feeding preference by specialist leaf beetles in a glasshouse experiment. Plant resistance decreased with latitude of origin, whereas plant tolerance increased. Oviposition and feeding preference in the glasshouse and leaf damage in the common‐garden experiment were negatively related to damage in the source populations. The latitudinal variation in resistance was thus consistent with reduced selection from herbivores towards the northern range margin of L. salicaria. Variation in tolerance may be related to differences in the timing of damage in relation to the seasonal pattern of plant growth, as northern genotypes have developed further than southern have when herbivores emerge in early summer.  相似文献

Plant monocultures are commonly believed to be more susceptible to herbivore attacks than stands composed of several plant species. However, few studies have experimentally tested the effects of tree species diversity on herbivory. In this paper, we present a meta-analysis of uniformly collected data on insect herbivore abundance and damage on three tree species (silver birch, black alder and sessile oak) from seven long-term forest diversity experiments in boreal and temperate forest zones. Our aim was to compare the effects of forest diversity on herbivores belonging to different feeding guilds and inhabiting different tree species. At the same time we also examined the variation in herbivore responses due to tree age and sampling period within the season, the effects of experimental design (plot size and planting density) and the stability of herbivore responses over time. Herbivore responses varied significantly both among insect feeding guilds and among host tree species. Among insect feeding guilds, only leaf miner densities were consistently lower and less variable in mixed stands as compared to tree monocultures regardless of the host tree species. The responses of other herbivores to forest diversity depended largely on host tree species. Insect herbivory on birch was significantly lower in mixtures than in birch monocultures, whereas insect herbivory on oak and alder was higher in mixtures than in oak and alder monocultures. The effects of tree species diversity were also more pronounced in older trees, in the earlier part of the season, at larger plots and at lower planting density. Overall our results demonstrate that forest diversity does not generally and uniformly reduce insect herbivory and suggest instead that insect herbivore responses to forest diversity are highly variable and strongly dependent on the host tree species and other stand characteristics as well as on the type of the herbivore.  相似文献

Edge habitats create environmental gradients that affect plant community composition and herbivore behavior. Silvicultural disturbance creates edge habitat with direct (via changes in light) and indirect (via changes in herbivore behavior) consequences for the growth and survival of tree seedlings, and thus, the composition of the future forest stands. Herbivores, particularly ungulates, can be a major limiting factor in oak regeneration, and silvicultural disturbance may alter the abundance or behavior of herbivores following harvest. We measured the severity of herbivory on experimentally planted white (Quercus alba) and black oak (Quercus velutina) seedlings by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and eastern cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus), as well as foliar damage from insects, across gradients created by clearcuts in a deciduous forest in Indiana, USA. Overall browse pressure on oaks was low in our study. Nonetheless, spatial variation in herbivory depended on herbivore taxa; herbivory by rabbits was highest inside harvest openings, whereas foliar damage by insects peaked in the forest. Intensity of deer herbivory was constant across the edge. In addition, we observed indirect interactions among herbivore species mediated by a seedling’s browsing history. Herbivore damage by deer was positively related to past browsing by rabbits, and foliar damage from insects was positively related to past browsing by both deer and rabbits. Increasing woody plant competition reduced herbivory on seedlings by both deer and rabbits. Given the lack of spatial variability in deer herbivory and low overall herbivory by rabbits, we suspect that interactions between timber harvesting and herbivory did not have a strong impact on oak seedlings at our study sites.  相似文献

Although insect herbivory can modify subsequent quantity and quality of their host plants, change in plant quantity following herbivory has received less attention than plant quality. In particular, little is known about how previous herbivore damage determines plant growth and biomass in an insect species-specific manner. We explored whether herbivore species-specific food demand influences plant growth and biomass. To do this, we conducted a series of experiments and field survey using two specialist butterflies, Sericinus montela and Atrophaneura alcinous, and their host plant, Aristolochia debilis. It is known that A. alcinous larva requires four times more food resources to fulfill its development than S. montela larva. Despite that A. alcinous larvae imposed greater damage on plants than S. montela larvae, plant growth did not differ due to herbivory by these species both in single and multiple herbivory events. On the other hand, total aboveground biomass of the plants was reduced more by A. alcinous than S. montela feeding regardless of the number of herbivory events. Feeding on plants with a history of previous herbivory neither decreased nor increased larval growth. Our results suggest that food demand of the two butterfly species determined subsequent plant biomass, although the plant response may depend on tolerance of the host plant (i.e., ability to compensate for herbivore damage). Such difference in the effects of different herbivore species on host plant biomass is more likely to occur than previously thought, because food demand differs in most herbivore species sharing a host plant.  相似文献

Rhizosphere microbes affect plant performance, including plant resistance against insect herbivores; yet, a direct comparison of the relative influence of rhizosphere microbes versus plant genetics on herbivory levels and on metabolites related to defence is lacking. In the crucifer Boechera stricta, we tested the effects of rhizosphere microbes and plant population on herbivore resistance, the primary metabolome, and select secondary metabolites. Plant populations differed significantly in the concentrations of six glucosinolates (GLS), secondary metabolites known to provide herbivore resistance in the Brassicaceae. The population with lower GLS levels experienced ~60% higher levels of aphid (Myzus persicae) attack; no association was observed between GLS and damage by a second herbivore, flea beetles (Phyllotreta cruciferae). Rhizosphere microbiome (disrupted vs. intact native microbiome) had no effect on plant GLS concentrations. However, aphid number and flea beetle damage were respectively about three‐ and seven‐fold higher among plants grown in the disrupted versus intact native microbiome treatment. These differences may be attributable to shifts in primary metabolic pathways previously implicated in host defence against herbivores, including increases in pentose and glucoronate interconversion among plants grown with an intact microbiome. Furthermore, native microbiomes with distinct community composition (as estimated from 16s rRNA amplicon sequencing) differed two‐fold in their effect on host plant susceptibility to aphids. Evolutionary interactions among insect herbivores and plant chemical defenses have generated systems where plant compounds have opposing fitness consequences for host plants, depending on attack by various insect herbivores. This interplay complicates understanding of fitness costs and benefits of plant chemical defenses. We are studying the role of the glucosinolate-myrosinase chemical defense system in protecting Arabidopsis thaliana from specialist and generalist insect herbivory. We used two Arabidopsis recombinant inbred populations in which we had previously mapped QTL controlling variation in the glucosinolate-myrosinase system. In this study we mapped QTL controlling resistance to specialist (Plutella xylostella) and generalist (Trichoplusia ni) herbivores. We identified a number of QTL that are specific to one herbivore or the other, as well as a single QTL that controls resistance to both insects. Comparison of QTL for herbivory, glucosinolates, and myrosinase showed that T. ni herbivory is strongly deterred by higher glucosinolate levels, faster breakdown rates, and specific chemical structures. In contrast, P. xylostella herbivory is uncorrelated with variation in the glucosinolate-myrosinase system. This agrees with evolutionary theory stating that specialist insects may overcome host plant chemical defenses, whereas generalists will be sensitive to these same defenses.  相似文献

Natural populations of wild cabbage (Brassica oleracea) show significant qualitative diversity in heritable aliphatic glucosinolates, a class of secondary metabolites involved in defence against herbivore attack. One candidate mechanism for the maintenance of this diversity is that differential responses among herbivore species result in a net fitness balance across plant chemotypes. Such top-down differential selection would be promoted by consistent responses of herbivores to glucosinolates, temporal variation in herbivore abundance, and fitness impacts of herbivore attack on plants varying in glucosinolate profile. A 1-year survey across 12 wild cabbage populations demonstrated differential responses of herbivores to glucosinolates. We extended this survey to investigate the temporal consistency of these responses, and the extent of variation in abundance of key herbivores. Within plant populations, the aphid Brevicoryne brassicae consistently preferred plants producing the glucosinolate progoitrin. Among populations, increasing frequencies of sinigrin production correlated positively with herbivory by whitefly Aleyrodes proletella and negatively with herbivory by snails. Two Pieris butterfly species showed no consistent response to glucosinolates among years. Rates of herbivory varied significantly among years within populations, but the frequency of herbivory at the population scale varied only for B. brassicae. B. brassicae emerges as a strong candidate herbivore to impose differential selection on glucosinolates, as it satisfies the key assumptions of consistent preferences and heterogeneity in abundance. We show that variation in plant secondary metabolites structures the local herbivore community and that, for some key species, this structuring is consistent over time. We discuss the implications of these patterns for the maintenance of diversity in plant defence chemistry.  相似文献
