Summary The octanol dehydrogenase (Odh) and acid phosphatase (Acph) loci of Drosophila melanogaster are each polymorphic for two electrophoretically detectable alleles. The frequencies of the Odh and Acph alleles have been analysed in populations sampled from up to a 40 ° latitudinal range in each of Australasia, North America and Europe/Asia. Odh S frequency is found to be significantly negatively associated with distance from the equator in all three zones. The relationship of Acph S frequency to distance from the equator is significant and negative in Australasia but neither significant nor consistent in sign in North America and Europe/Asia.  相似文献

The four paracentric autosomal chromosome inversions In(2L)t, In(2R)NS, In(3L)P and In(3R)R are commonly polymorphic in natural populations of D. melanogaster in Australasia, North America and Asia, with latitudinal clines in the frequencies of each inversion in each region. In each region inversion frequency decreases with increasing distance from the equator, although the precise relationship between frequency and latitude varies between inversions and, for In(2L)t and In(2R)NS, among regions. Each inversion also shows a longitudinal cline in at least one region but none show such a cline in all three. Although no inversion's frequency is associated with the same climatic variable in all three regions, inversion frequencies are generally positively related to annual maximum temperature and, more particularly, minimum temperature and minimum rainfall. The directions of the latitudinal clines and the climatic associations are consonant with evidence from D. melanogaster that inversion frequencies decline in winter. They are also consonant with evidence from some other Drosophila species that inversion heterozygosities are lower at the geographic margins than at the centre of the species' ranges.  相似文献

The Adh and αGpdh allozyme loci (both located on the second chromosome) showed considerable fluctuations in allele frequencies in a seminatural population of Drosophila melanogaster during 1972–97. Both long-term and short-term fluctuations were observed. The short-term fluctuations occurred within almost all years and comparison of allele frequencies between winters and summers showed significantly higher AdhS (P < 0.001) and αGpdhF (P < 0.01) allele frequencies in summers. Frequencies of these alleles were significantly positively correlated with environmental temperature, suggesting the adaptive significance of these allozyme polymorphisms. Frequency changes of the Odh locus (located on the third chromosome) showed no seasonal pattern and were not correlated with environmental temperature. Almost all short-term and long-term increases in AdhS frequency were accompanied by a corresponding decrease in αGpdhS frequency (r = –0.82, P < 0.001) and vice versa. Further analysis showed that gametic disequilibria between the Adh and αGpdh loci, which frequently occurred, were due to the presence of inversion In(2L)t located on the same chromosome arm and In(2L)t frequencies were positively correlated with environmental temperature. Gametic disequilibria between Adh and Odh and between Odh and αGpdh were hardly observed. Because In(2L)t is exclusively associated with the AdhS/αGpdhF allele combination, the observed correlated response in Adh/αGpdh allele frequencies is (at least partly) explained by hitchhiking effects with In(2L)t. This means that the adaptive value of the allozyme polymorphisms has been overestimated by ignoring In(2L)t polymorphism. Fluctuations in Adh allele frequencies are fully explained by selection on In(2L)t polymorphism, whereas we have shown that αGpdh frequency fluctuations are only partly explained by chromosomal hitchhiking, indicating the presence of selective differences among αGpdh genotypes in relation with temperature and independent of In(2L)t. Frequency fluctuations of αGpdh and In(2L)t are consistent with their latitudinal distributions, assuming that temperature is the main environmental factor varying with latitude that causes directly or indirectly these frequency distributions. However, the results of the tropical greenhouse population show no correlation of Adh (independent of In(2L)t) and Odh allele frequencies with environmental temperature, which may indicate that the latitudinal distribution in allele frequencies for these loci is not the result of selection on the F/S polymorphism in a direct way.  相似文献

Allozyme frequency data from five Greek wild sympatric populations of Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans along a North-South gradient were analyzed for genotype-environment relationships. The regression coefficient of genetic distance on geographic distance indicates that there is a significant relationship between these parameters for D. melanogaster only. Highly significant differences in specific alleles at certain loci were found between the various local populations studied. The changes in Gpdh F of D. melanogaster and Est-6 F of D. simulans exhibited clinal patterns in allele frequencies. In addition, analysis of D. melanogaster Gpdh Fand Adh F allele frequencies shows that the Greek data do not have regression coefficients (regressing allele frequency on degrees North of latitude) of the same sign as East-and West-Coast United-States populations. These contradictory data are discussed in relation to what is known about the maintenance of the Adh and Gpdh polymorphisms.  相似文献

Gametes from each of 19 Australasian collections of Drosophila melanogaster were characterised for polymorphic Adh and Gpdh allozyme loci and the two chromosome-2 common cosmopolitan inversions In(2L)t and In(2R)NS.-No consistent gametic disequilibria for the loosely linked combinations of Adh-Gpdh and Adh-In(2R)NS were found over the 19 collections. However, strong and consistent gametic disequilibria were found for the tightly linked combinations of Adh-In(2L)t and Gpdh-In(2L)t. The results for each of these four combinations agree with those previously reported for Northern-Hemisphere collections. -Notwithstanding its parallel latitudinal cline and consistent gametic disequilibrium with Adh, In(2L)t was found to account for only a small fraction of the Adh latitudinal cline in Australasia. This is consistent with the previous finding that the North American Adh latitudinal cline also exists largely independently of In(2L)t. However, In(2L)t accounts for all of the Australasian Gpdh latitudinal cline and so contrasts the finding from North American collections where the corresponding Gpdh cline exists largely independently of In(2L)t.  相似文献

Substantial allele-frequency changes were observed at the Adh and αGpdh loci in a seminatural population of Drosophila melanogaster kept in a tropical greenhouse during 1972–1985. Further analysis of the changes at the Adh and αGpdh loci showed that linkage disequilibrium between these loci occurred for a prolonged period due to the presence of In(2L)t, a long inversion on the left arm of the second chromosome. We observed increases in the frequencies of In(2L)t and of short inversions on the left arm of the second chromosome in subpopulations kept at 29.5°C or 33°C. These inversion-frequency increases were accompanied by an increase in Adhs and a decrease in αGpdhs frequency. In populations kept at 20°C and 25°C, inversion frequencies decreased, while αGpdhs allele frequencies decreased at 25°C and increased at 20°C. At 33°C, egg-to-adult survival of individuals possessing In(2L)t, either in the homokaryotypic or the heterokaryotypic state, was higher than that of the other karyotypes of identical allozyme constitution (i.e., Adhs αGpdhF). Thus it seems that In(2L)t has a selective advantage at high temperature. We argue that the observed changes in allele frequencies at the Adh and αGpdh loci are, in part, due to genic selection and are not merely the result of selection acting on the chromosome rearrangements and hitchhiking of the allozymes. The results are discussed with respect to the latitudinal clines found for In(2L)t, Adh, and αGpdh.  相似文献

Aim Spatial turnover of species, or beta diversity, varies in relation to geographical distance and environmental conditions, as well as spatial scale. We evaluated the explanatory power of distance, climate and topography on beta diversity of mammalian faunas of North America in relation to latitude. Location North America north of Mexico. Methods The study area was divided into 313 equal‐area quadrats (241 × 241 km). Faunal data for all continental mammals were compiled for these quadrats, which were divided among five latitudinal zones. These zones were comparable in terms of latitudinal and longitudinal span, climatic gradients and elevational gradients. We used the natural logarithm of the Jaccard index (lnJ) to measure species turnover between pairs of quadrats within each latitudinal zone. The slope of lnJ in relation to distance was compared among latitudinal zones. We used partial regression to partition the variance in lnJ into the components uniquely explained by distance and by environmental differences, as well as jointly by distance and environmental differences. Results Mammalian faunas of North America differ more from each other at lower latitudes than at higher latitudes. Regression models of lnJ in relation to distance, climatic difference and topographic difference for each zone demonstrated that these variables have high explanatory power that diminishes with latitude. Beta diversity is higher for zones with higher mean annual temperature, lower seasonality of temperature and greater topographic complexity. For each latitudinal zone, distance and environmental differences explain a greater proportion of the variance in lnJ than distance, climate or topography does separately. Main conclusions The latitudinal gradient in beta diversity of North American mammals corresponds to a macroclimatic gradient of decreasing mean annual temperature and increasing seasonality of temperature from south to north. Most of the variance in spatial turnover is explained by distance and environmental differences jointly rather than distance, climate or topography separately. The high predictive power of geographical distance, climatic conditions and topography on spatial turnover could result from the direct effects of physical limiting factors or from ecological and evolutionary processes that are also influenced by the geographical template.  相似文献

The frequencies of a polymorphic inversion, In(2L)t, and of Adh and αGpdh alleles were analyzed in three natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster from Japan. Significant positive correlations between the frequencies of In(2L)t and AdhS or αGpdhF were detected due to tight linkage. An analysis of correlation with latitude showed that the negative cline of AdhS frequency could be explained entirely by its linkage with In(2L)t; the frequency of AdhS on the standard chromosome did not show a latitudinal cline. To the contrary, the cline of αGpdhF frequency itself was positive, and its linkage with In(2L)t makes the positive cline unclear. These results suggest that the two allozymes themselves respond to latitudinal natural selection in different ways. When these populations were transferred to laboratory cages and maintained for a long time, they lost the chromosomal polymorphism but retained stable enzyme polymorphisms, although allele frequencies in the cage were not the same as in nature. The frequencies of Adh and αGpdh alleles were close to those in earlier cage populations of the same geographical origin.  相似文献

This paper reports: (1) patterns of taxonomic richness of vascularplants in North America (north of Mexico), an area accountingfor 16.6% of the total world land, in relation to latitudinaland longitudinal gradients; (2) floristic relationships betweendifferent latitudinal zones, longitudinal zones, and geographicregions of North America; and (3) floristic relationships betweenNorth America and Eurasia at various geographic scales. NorthAmerica was geographically divided into twelve regions, whichwere latitudinally grouped into four zones, each with threeregions, and longitudinally grouped into three zones, each withfour regions. The native vascular flora of North America consistsof 162 orders, 280 families, 1904 genera and 15352 species.Along the latitudinal gradient, species richness shows a strikingincrease with decreasing latitude (e.g. the northernmost latitudinalzone has only 11.7% of the number of species in the southernmostlatitudinal zone). However, about 63% of the species of thenorthernmost latitudinal zone are also present in the southernmostlatitudinal zone of North America. Among the three longitudinalzones, the zone on the Pacific coast has 1.48 and 1.64-timesas many species as the zones in the interior and on the Atlanticcoast, respectively. About 36% of the species in the zone ofthe Atlantic coast also occur in the Pacific coast zone. However, each of over 40% of the species in North America occupies lessthan 10% of the total land area of North America. Some 48% ofthe genera and 6.5% of the species of North America are alsonative to Eurasia. In general, the number of genera common toNorth America and Eurasia increased from the north to the southand from the west to the east of North America, whereas thenumber of species common to the two continents decreased alongthe same two geographic gradients.Copyright 1999 Annals of BotanyCompany Asia, biodiversity, Europe, floristic similarity, latitudinal and longitudinal gradients, North America, taxonomic richness.  相似文献

Electrophoretic variation at three enzyme loci-alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh), glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (Gpdh), triosephosphate isomerase (Tpi)- is compared in Australian Drosophila melanogaster populations at three levels of spatial heterogeneity; among breeding sites, within populations, and between populations at the geographic level. Heterogeneity at the breeding site level greatly exceeds that among adults within populations, indicating greater intermixing at the mobile adult stage than at the developmentally immature and less migratory larval stage. Heterogeneity at the microspatial level is large relative to the geographic level at two of these loci. Spatial patterns of variation in ecological phenotypes are also considered. It is argued that electrophoretic variants may contribute little to an understanding of this quantitative variation, and that a more useful approach in ecological genetics is to consider ecological phenotypes as primary data.  相似文献

Aim Newly formed polyploids experience problems of establishment and spread similar to those faced by newly introduced alien species. To understand the significance of polyploidy in biological invasions, we mapped the distribution of ploidy levels in Solidago gigantea Aiton in its native range in North America, and in Europe and East Asia where it is invasive. Location North America, Europe and East Asia. Methods Flow cytometry was used to measure ploidy levels in a total of 834 plants from 149 locations. Together with data from contributors and a literature review, ploidy‐level data were assembled for 336 locations. Cytogeographical maps from North America and Europe were prepared, incorporating new and previously published ploidy‐level data. Results In the native range, diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid plants were found, and also one triploid and one pentaploid plant (2n = 3x and 2n = 5x, respectively, each being new reports for this species). There was a high degree of geographical separation among the ploidy levels, and populations with mixed ploidy were rare. However, four zones were identified where plants of different ploidy could come into contact. In Europe and East Asia, only tetraploid plants were found. Main conclusions The geographical pattern in North America suggests that the ploidy levels are ecologically differentiated, although further investigations are needed to identify the nature of these differences. Alien populations appear to be exclusively tetraploid, but it is not clear whether this is because tetraploids were selectively introduced or because diploids were unsuccessful. In any case, comparisons between native and introduced populations need to account for ploidy level.  相似文献

Due to climate change, the ranges of many North American tree species are expected to shift northward. Sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marshall) reaches its northern continuous distributional limit in northeastern North America at the transition between boreal mixed‐wood and temperate deciduous forests. We hypothesized that marginal fragmented northern populations from the boreal mixed wood would have a distinct pattern of genetic structure and diversity. We analyzed variation at 18 microsatellite loci from 23 populations distributed along three latitudinal transects (west, central, and east) that encompass the continuous–discontinuous species range. Each transect was divided into two zones, continuous (temperate deciduous) and discontinuous (boreal mixed wood), based on sugar maple stand abundance. Respective positive and negative relationships were found between the distance of each population to the northern limit (D_north), and allelic richness (AR) and population differentiation (FST). These relations were tested for each transect separately; the pattern (discontinuous–continuous) remained significant only for the western transect. structure analysis revealed the presence of four clusters. The most northern populations of each transect were assigned to a distinct group. Asymmetrical gene flow occurred from the southern into the four northernmost populations. Southern populations in Québec may have originated from two different postglacial migration routes. No evidence was found to validate the hypothesis that northern populations were remnants of a larger population that had migrated further north of the species range after the retreat of the ice sheet. The northernmost sugar maple populations possibly originated from long‐distance dispersal.  相似文献

Aim This paper aims at determining how different floristic elements (e.g. cosmopolitan, tropical, and temperate) change with latitude and major climate factors, and how latitude affects the floristic relationships between East Asia and the other parts of the world. Location East Asia from the Arctic to tropical regions, an area crossing over 50° of latitudes and covering the eastern part of China, Korea, Japan and the eastern part of Russia. Methods East Asia is divided into forty‐five geographical regions. Based on the similarity of their world‐wide distributional patterns, a total of 2808 indigenous genera of seed plants found in East Asia were grouped into fourteen geographical elements, belonging to three major categories (cosmopolitan, tropical and temperate). The 50°‐long latitudinal gradient of East Asia was divided into five latitudinal zones, each of c. 10°. Phytogeographical relationships of East Asia to latitude and climatic variables were examined based on the forty‐five regional floras. Results Among all geographical and climatic variables considered, latitude showed the strongest relationship to phytogeographical composition. Tropical genera (with pantropical, amphi‐Pacific tropical, palaeotropical, tropical Asia–tropical Australia, tropical Asia–tropical Africa and tropical Asia geographical elements combined) accounted for c. 80% of the total genera at latitude 20°N and for c. 0% at latitude 55–60°N. In contrast, temperate genera (including holarctic, eastern Asia–North America, temperate Eurasia, temperate Asia, Mediterranean, western Asia to central Asia, central Asia and eastern Asia geographical elements) accounted for 15.5% in the southernmost latitude and for 80% at 55–60°N, from where northward the percentage tended to level off. The proportion of cosmopolitan genera increased gradually with latitude from 5% at the southernmost latitude to 21% at 55–60°N, where it levelled off northward. In general, the genera present in a more northerly flora are a subset of the genera present in a more southerly flora. Main conclusions The large‐scale patterns of phytogeography in East Asia are strongly related to latitude, which covaries with several climatic variables such as temperature. Evolutionary processes such as the adaptation of plants to cold climates and current and past land connections are likely responsible for the observed latitudinal patterns.  相似文献

Aim

The ectomycorrhizal genus Strobilomyces is widely distributed throughout many parts of the world, but its origin, divergence and distribution patterns remain largely unresolved. In this study, we aim to explore the species diversity, distribution and evolutionary patterns of Strobilomyces on a global scale by establishing a general phylogenetic framework with extensive sampling.

Location

Africa, Australasia, East Asia, Europe, North America, Central America and Southeast Asia.

Methods

The genealogical concordance phylogenetic species recognition method was used to delimit phylogenetic species. Divergence times were estimated using a Bayesian uncorrelated lognormal relaxed molecular clock. The ancestral area and host of Strobilomyces were inferred via the programs rasp and mesquite . The change of diversification rate over time was estimated using Ape, Laser and Bammtools software packages.

Results

We recognize a novel African clade and 49 phylogenetic species with morphological evidence, including 18 new phylogenetic species and 23 previously described ones. Strobilomyces probably originated in Africa, in association with Detarioideae/Phyllanthaceae/Monotoideae during the early Eocene. The dispersal to Southeast Asia can be explained by Wolfe's “Boreotropical migration” hypothesis. East Asia, Australasia, Europe and North/Central America are primarily the recipients of immigrant taxa during the Oligocene or later. A rapid radiation implied by one diversification shift was inferred within Strobilomyces during the Miocene.

Main conclusions

An unexpected phylogenetic species diversity within Strobilomyces was uncovered. The highest diversity, resulting probably from a rapid radiation, was found in East Asia. Dispersal played an important role in the current distribution pattern of Strobilomyces. The Palaeotropical disjunction is explained by species dispersal from Africa to Southeast Asia through boreotropical forests during the early Eocene. Species from the Northern Hemisphere and Australasia are largely derived from immigrant ancestors from Southeast Asia.  相似文献

A primary goal for evolutionary biology is to reveal the genetic basis for adaptive evolution and reproductive isolation. Using Z and E pheromone strains the European corn borer (ECB) moth, I address this problem through multilocus analyses of DNA polymorphism. I find that the locus Triose phosphate isomerase (Tpi) is a statistically significant outlier in coalescent simulations of demographic histories of population divergence, including strict allopatric isolation, restricted migration, secondary contact, and population growth or decline. This result corroborates a previous QTL study that identified the Tpi chromosomal region as a repository for gene(s) contributing to divergence in life history. Patterns of nucleotide polymorphism at Tpi suggest a recent selective sweep and genetic hitchhiking associated with colonization of North America from Europe ~200 generations ago. These results indicate that gene genealogies initially diverge during speciation because of selective sweeps, but differential introgression may play a role in the maintenance of differentiation for sympatric populations.  相似文献

Water availability is a major environmental challenge to a variety of terrestrial organisms. In insects, desiccation tolerance varies predictably over spatial and temporal scales and is an important physiological determinant of fitness in natural populations. Here, we examine the dynamics of desiccation tolerance in North American populations of Drosophila melanogaster using: (a) natural populations sampled across latitudes and seasons; (b) experimental evolution in field mesocosms over seasonal time; (c) genome‐wide associations to identify SNPs/genes associated with variation for desiccation tolerance; and (d) subsequent analysis of patterns of clinal/seasonal enrichment in existing pooled sequencing data of populations sampled in both North America and Australia. A cline in desiccation tolerance was observed, for which tolerance exhibited a positive association with latitude; tolerance also varied predictably with culture temperature, demonstrating a significant degree of thermal plasticity. Desiccation tolerance evolved rapidly in field mesocosms, although only males showed differences in desiccation tolerance between spring and autumn collections from natural populations. Water loss rates did not vary significantly among latitudinal or seasonal populations; however, changes in metabolic rates during prolonged exposure to dry conditions are consistent with increased tolerance in higher latitude populations. Genome‐wide associations in a panel of inbred lines identified twenty‐five SNPs in twenty‐one loci associated with sex‐averaged desiccation tolerance, but there is no robust signal of spatially varying selection on genes associated with desiccation tolerance. Together, our results suggest that desiccation tolerance is a complex and important fitness component that evolves rapidly and predictably in natural populations.  相似文献

The polymorphism of Gc (group-specific components) has been investigated for a series of 3,160 individual samples from 11 Mongoloid populations in Asia and North and South America by isoelectric focusing on polyacrylamide gels. The samples fall into six Gc phenotypes which can be explained by the three common alleles, Gc1F, Gc1S, and Gc2, together with several variant phenotypes explained as the heterozygotes for the three common alleles. The distribution of Gc1F suballele appears to be considerably different from population to population among Mongoloids, ranging from 0.105 (Machiguenga Indans, Peru) to 0.609 (Kadazan, Borneo). A clear geographic cline from Southeast Asia into South America in Gc1F allele was observed in the populations. In general, Gc1F allele frequencies are lower in European populations and higher in African populations. The range of variability in the Gc1F values observed among the Asiatic populations is between the Africans and the Europeans.  相似文献

Fourteen Indian populations ofD. melanogaster collected along a 22° latitudinal range were analyzed electrophoretically to compare the geographical patterns of allozymic variation at 13 loci. The data show higher genetic differentiation on the basis of moderate to higherF ST values and significant statistical correlation of allelic frequencies at six polymorphic loci with latitude. The results add support to the hypothesis that the occurrence of parallel or complementary latitudinal clines across different continental populations provides evidence of natural selection maintaining such clinal variation.  相似文献

Geographic clines offer insights about putative targets and agents of natural selection as well as tempo and mode of adaptation. However, demographic processes can lead to clines that are indistinguishable from adaptive divergence. Using the widespread yellow dung fly Scathophaga stercoraria (Diptera: Scathophagidae), we examine quantitative genetic differentiation (QST) of wing shape across North America, Europe, and Japan, and compare this differentiation with that of ten microsatellites (FST). Morphometric analyses of 28 populations reared at three temperatures revealed significant thermal plasticity, sexual dimorphism, and geographic differentiation in wing shape. In North America morphological differentiation followed the decline in microsatellite variability along the presumed route of recent colonization from the southeast to the northwest. Across Europe, where S. stercoraria presumably existed for much longer time and where no molecular pattern of isolation by distance was evident, clinal variation was less pronounced despite significant morphological differentiation (QST>FST). Shape vector comparisons further indicate that thermal plasticity (hot‐to‐cold) does not mirror patterns of latitudinal divergence (south‐to‐north), as might have been expected under a scenario with temperature as the major agent of selection. Our findings illustrate the importance of detailed phylogeographic information when interpreting geographic clines of dispersal traits in an adaptive evolutionary framework.  相似文献

The latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG) has been known for over a century, but its origin remains poorly understood. Because both latitude and species richness are broadly related to temperature, environmental temperature has been proposed as a driver of the LDG. Recently, Wang et al. (2009, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, 106 ,13388–13392) used datasets compiled from tree distributions in eastern Asia and North America to compare the species richness?temperature relationship between the two regions at several spatial scales and framed their analyses in the context of the metabolic theory of ecology. Here, we show that their datasets lack comparability between eastern Asia and North America and that some aspects of their analyses probably biased their results, casting doubt on some of their conclusions.  相似文献
