Since insulin compounds can restore some metabolic parameters and lipid profile alterations of the diabetic rat heart, we investigated whether these beneficial effects extend to diabetic rat cardiac dysfunctions. Twenty-four male Wistar albino rats, 6 months of age with an average body weight of 250–320 g, were divided randomly into three groups, each consisting of eight rats: control-group (C) rats were fed with standard rat nutrient and water; diabetic-group (D) rats were treated with a single intramuscular injection of streptozotocin (STZ, 45 mg/kg), dissolved in 0.01 M sodium citrate, pH adjusted to 4.5; and insulin-treated diabetic group (D + INS) rats were treated with subcutaneous injections of 1 IU/l insulin (INS) twice a day after a single intramuscular injection of STZ (45 mg/kg). Treatment of D rats with INS caused a time-dependent decrease in blood glucose. We found that the lipid profile and HbA1c levels in the D + INS group reached the values of control rats at the end of the treatment period. Contraction force in group D was compared with values from groups C and D + INS (p < 0.05). Values were obtained at a muscle contraction and relaxation time of milliseconds, with contraction time in D compared to C and D compared to D + INS and C (p < 0.05). Rate-dependent changes in action potential configuration in left ventricular papillary muscle obtained from 8-week control, STZ-treated D and D + INS rats showed significant membrane potential changes between C and STZ-treated D animals. Action potential amplitude showed significant changes between matched D + INS and STZ-treated D animals. Depolarization time showed significant changes between C and STZ-treated D animals and between the D + INS and D groups. Half-repolarization time showed significant changes between D + INS and STZ-treated D animals and compared to the D and C groups. Our data suggest that the beneficial effects of insulin treatment on the mechanical and electrical activities of the diabetic rat heart appear to be due to restoration of the diminished K+ currents, partially related to the restoration of hyperglycemia.  相似文献

Decellularised tissue allografts have been used in reconstructive surgical applications and transplantation for many years. Some of the current methods of sterilisation have a detrimental effect on the tissue graft structure and function. The anti-microbial activity of cupric ions and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) are well known however their combined application is not currently utilised as a decontamination agent in the tissue banking world sector. The aim of this study was to determine the combined concentrations of copper chloride (CuCl2) and H2O2 that have the optimal bactericidal and sporicidal activity on decellularised (dCELL) human dermis. The first part of this study established the decimal reduction time (D-value) of CuCl2 (0.1 mg/L and 1 mg/L) together with H2O2 (0.01, 0.1, 0.5 and 1%) for Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis spores. The second part of this study identified the most effective CuCl2 and H2O2 concentration that decontaminated dCELL human dermis inoculated with these pathogens. Of all the concentrations tested, 0.1 mg/L CuCl2 in combination with 1% H2O2 had the shortest D-value; S. epidermidis D = 3.15 min, E. coli D = 2.62 min and B. subtilis spores D = 18.05 min. However when adsorbed onto dCELL dermis, S. epidermidis and E. coli were more susceptible to 1 mg/L CuCl2 together with 0.5% H2O2. These studies show promise of CuCl2–H2O2 formulations as potential sterilants for decellularised dermal allografts.  相似文献

Tuberculosis is a significant problem globally for domestic animals as well as captive and free ranging wild life. Rapid point of care (POC) serology kits are well suited for the diagnosis of TB in wild animals. However, wild animals are invariably exposed to environmental non-pathogenic mycobacterium species with the development of cross reacting antibodies. In the present study, POC TB diagnosis kit was developed using a combination of pathogenic Mycobacteria specific recombinant antigens and purified protein derivatives of pathogenic and non-pathogenic Mycobacteria. To benchmark the TB antibody detection kit, particularly in respect to specificity which could not be determined in wildlife due to the lack of samples from confirmed uninfected animals, we first tested well-characterized sera from 100 M. bovis infected and 100 uninfected cattle. Then we investigated the kit’s performance using sera samples from wildlife, namely Sloth Bears (n = 74), Elephants (n = 9), Cervidae (n = 14), Felidae (n = 21), Cape buffalo (n = 2), Wild bear (n = 1) and Wild dog (n = 1).In cattle, a sensitivity of 81% and a specificity of 90% were obtained. The diagnostic sensitivity of the kit was 94% when the kit was tested using known TB positive sloth bear sera samples. 47.4% of the in-contact sloth bears turned seropositive using the rapid POC TB diagnostic kit. Seropositivity in other wild animals was 25% when the sera samples were tested using the kit. A point of care TB sero-diagnostic kit with the combination of proteins was developed and the kit was validated using the sera samples of wild animals.  相似文献

Though retaliatory lion (Panthera leo) killing as a result of livestock predation in the Maasai group ranches between the Tsavo NPs and Amboseli is remarkably high, other wildlife species are known to kill livestock. Surprisingly, lions suffer the most from retaliatory killing by the Maasai community for killing livestock. The extent of livestock predation by lions in comparison to other species is unknown. This study was carried out in the Olgulului group ranch (OGR) located adjacent to Amboseli National Park in June 2009. The cost of livestock killed by each of these species including lion, hyena (Crocuta crocuta), cheetah (Acynonyx jubatus), leopard (Panthera pardus), olive baboon (Papio cynocephalus), black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas), and African elephant (Loxodonta africana) was analyzed. Questionnaires, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews with officials from OGR, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and compensation scheme organizations were the methods used to collect information. Cluster and systematic sampling techniques were used to select a sample of 199 respondents from OGR. Lions were blamed for 40.5% (US$ 374,603) of the value of livestock lost to wildlife. The costs of livestock lost to hyenas and lions were not significantly different (q = 0.24, p = 0.968). Although hyenas killed more livestock compared to lions, the economic damage between the two was not significantly different because lions attacked cattle which had high economic value. Conservation of lions will be increasingly difficult if the current levels of predation are not reduced to economically and socially acceptable levels.  相似文献

Age and growth estimates for the smooth skate, Malacoraja senta, were derived from 306 vertebral centra from skates caught in the North Atlantic off the coast of New Hampshire and Massachusetts, USA. Males and females were aged to 15 and 14 years, respectively. Male and female growth diverged at both ends of the data range and the sexes required different growth functions to describe them. Males followed a traditional growth scenario and were best described by a von Bertalanffy curve with a set L o (11 cm TL) where L inf  = 75.4 cm TL, K = 0.12. Females required the use of back-calculated values to account for a lack of small individuals, using these data they were best described by a von Bertalanffy curve where growth parameters derived from vertebral length-at-age data are L inf  = 69.6 cm TL, K = 0.12, and L o  = 10.  相似文献

Reliable soil organic carbon (SOC) stock measurements of all major ecosystems are essential for predicting the influence of global warming on global soil carbon pools, but hardly any detailed soil survey data are available for tropical montane cloud forests (TMCF) and adjacent high elevation grasslands above (puna). TMCF are among the most threatened of ecosystems under current predicted global warming scenarios. We conducted an intensive soil sampling campaign extending 40 km along the tree line in the Peruvian Andes between 2994 and 3860 m asl to quantify SOC stocks of TMCF, puna grassland, and shrubland sites in the transition zone between the two habitats. SOC stocks from the soil surface down to the bedrock averaged (±standard error SE) 11.8 (±1.5, N = 24) kg C/m2 in TMCF, 14.7 (±1.4, N = 9) kg C/m2 in the shrublands and 11.9 (±0.8, N = 35) kg C/m2 in the grasslands and were not significantly different (P > 0.05 for all comparisons). However, soil profile analysis revealed distinct differences, with TMCF profiles showing a uniform SOC distribution with depth, shrublands a linear decrease, and puna sites an exponential decrease in SOC densities with soil depth. Organic soil layer thickness reached a maximum (~70 cm) at the upper limit of the TMCF and declined with increasing altitude toward puna sites. Within TMCF, no significant increase in SOC stocks with increasing altitude was observed, probably because of the large variations among SOC stocks at different sites, which in turn were correlated with spatial variation in soil depth.  相似文献

We assessed the magnitude, composition, and spatial and temporal patterns of road mortality of native vertebrates on two highways in southern Brazil from 18 January 2003 to 26 January 2004. The highways cross remnants of the Atlantic Rainforest, a global biodiversity hotspot, and differ in vehicle traffic and surrounding landscape. We compared the road-kill magnitude and composition of birds, mammals, and reptiles between roads and seasons. We used a modified K statistic to depict the spatial patterns of roadkills of these groups and tested the association between vehicle traffic and road mortality through linear regression. We recorded 869 kills of 92 species. The two roads differed regarding the abundance and composition of roadkills. Reptile road mortality was higher in summer than winter, but all other groups did not show significant difference in the magnitude of mortality between seasons. The composition of killed assemblages differed significantly for some of the taxonomic groups among seasons. We found only one positive association between roadkills and vehicle traffic (reptiles on one of the roads), suggesting that vehicle flow does not explain the road-kill temporal variation on these roads. Total vertebrate, bird, and mammal roadkills showed significant spatial aggregations possibly due to variation in vehicle traffic, highway design, and local landscape condition and arrangement. With expected expansion of the road network, mitigation measures for multi-species assemblages should include habitat protection, soil use regulation, road crossing structures, speed reducers, and campaigns to raise people’s awareness about road impacts on wildlife.  相似文献

This study of values placed on wildlife by Bantu and Yaka Pygmy forest dwellers (n = 200) in Northern Congo identified and analyzed two wildlife value orientations - “anthropocentric” and “biocentric.” The former, strongly displayed across all segments of both societies, was likely motivated by heavy reliance on bushmeat and human–wildlife conflicts, and was linked to attitudes approving the killing of animals for human benefit. The “biocentric” orientation was more common among formally educated male respondents who do not hunt and positively linked to attitudes favoring conservation. Wildlife management strategies should consider including 1) sustainable local wildlife exploitation, 2) livelihood projects that provide a real alternative to hunting, and 3) human–wildlife conflict mitigation.  相似文献

A primary challenge to managing emerging infectious disease is identifying pathways that allow pathogen transmission at the human–wildlife interface. Using Escherichia coli as a model organism, we evaluated fecal bacterial transmission between banded mongoose (Mungos mungo) and humans in northern Botswana. Fecal samples were collected from banded mongoose living in protected areas (n = 87, 3 troops) and surrounding villages (n = 92, 3 troops). Human fecal waste was collected from the same environment (n = 46). Isolates were evaluated for susceptibility to 10 antibiotics. Resistant E. coli isolates from mongoose were compared to human isolates using rep-PCR fingerprinting and MLST-PCR. Antimicrobial resistant isolates were identified in 57?% of the mongoose fecal samples tested (range 31–78% among troops). At least one individual mongoose fecal sample demonstrated resistance to each tested antibiotic, and multidrug resistance was highest in the protected areas (40.9%). E. coli isolated from mongoose and human sources in this study demonstrated an extremely high degree of genetic similarity on rep-PCR (AMOVA, F ST = 0.0027, p = 0.18) with a similar pattern identified on MLST-PCR. Human waste may be an important source of microbial exposure to wildlife. Evidence of high levels of antimicrobial resistance even within protected areas identifies an emerging health threat and highlights the need for improved waste management in these systems.  相似文献

The SERPINE1 (serpin peptidase inhibitor, clade E, member 1) gene, better known by its previous symbol PAI-1 (plasminogen activator inhibitor 1), has been associated with cardiovascular phenotypes with differing results. Our aim was to examine the association between the rs6950982 (G > A) near the SERPINE1 gene, blood pressure (BP) and plasma lipid concentrations as well as the modulation of the polymorphism effects by adherence to Mediterranean diet (AMD). We studied 945 high-cardiovascular-risk subjects. Biochemical, clinical, dietary and genetic data (rs6950982) were obtained. We also determined the common rs1799768 (4G/5G), for checking independent effects. AMD was measured by a validated questionnaire, and four groups were considered. rs6950982 (A > G) and rs1799768 (4G/5G) were only in moderate–low linkage disequilibrium (D′ = 0.719; r 2 = 0.167). The most significant associations we obtained were with rs6950982 (A > G). In males, the G allele was nominally associated with higher diastolic BP (AA: 81.5 ± 10.9, AG: 82.1 ± 11.4, GG: 85.7 ± 10.5 mmHg; P additive = 0.030) and systolic BP (AA + AG: 141.4 ± 6.9 mmHg vs. GG: 149.8 ± 8.0 mmHg; P recessive = 0.036). In the whole population, the rs6950982 was also associated with plasma lipids. Subject with the G allele presented higher total cholesterol (P additive = 0.016, P recessive = 0.011), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P additive = 0.032, P recessive = 0.031) and triglycerides (P additive = 0.040, P recessive = 0.029). AMD modulated the effect of rs6950982 on triglyceride concentrations (P for interaction = 0.036). Greater AMD reduced the higher triglyceride concentrations in GG subjects. No significant interactions were found for the other parameters. The rs6950982 was associated with higher BP in men and higher triglycerides in the whole population, this association being modulated by AMD.  相似文献

We compared species composition and diversity of the soil seed and seedling banks in three secondary vegetation types (shrubland, Populus bonatii forest, Lithocarpus regrowth forest) and a primary old-growth forest in the subtropical Ailao Mountains of southwestern China to clarify the importance of seed and seedling banks for forest dynamics. The average species richness was the highest in soil samples from the shrubland (26.80 ± 1.98), and the lowest from the primary forest (9.93 ± 0.50). The density of germinable tree seeds increased from the secondary vegetation to the primary forest, and the density of shrub, forb, and graminoid seeds decreased significantly. The most abundant seedlings recorded in soil samples were light-demanding species in the shrubland and Populus bonatii forest. For ground flora, the number of shrub seedlings strongly decreased with the increase in stand age, and shade-tolerant tree seedlings tended to increase. The species similarity between the seed bank and the aboveground vegetation in all sites was low (Sørensen’s index = 0.11–0.33), however, the shrubland had higher similarity compared with the other three plant communities. In the primary forest, light-demanding woody species dominated in soil seed banks, while shade-tolerant species dominated in the overstory and the forest floor. In the primary forest, seedlings of dominant tree species were rare in the understory, and no seeds of the dominant species were found in the soil. Results indicated that the early stages of vegetation recovery should take into account the possibility of recovering soil seed bank processes. However, colonization and establishment of tree seedlings will be difficult once a primary forest is destroyed.  相似文献

We investigated the population genetics and fine-scale genetic structure of Rhizopogon roseolus. A total of 173 R. roseolus sporocarps were collected from two stands in the Tottori sand dune. We developed and applied five novel polymorphic microsatellite (SSR; simple sequence repeat) markers for sporocarp genotyping. In total, we identified 110 genets, most of which were small in size. Spatial autocorrelation analyses revealed a significantly positive genetic structure in short-distance classes. The inbreeding coefficient value was significant in both stands (FIS = 0.18), while the FST value (FST = 0.020) indicated little genetic differentiation between the two populations. The majority of alleles were distributed in both stands with similar frequencies. These results suggest that short-distance spore dispersal plays a dominant role in generating new genets, and eventually increases the frequency of inbreeding in the Tottori sand dune, whereas rare gene flow between the two stands, possibly associated with spore dispersal by mycophagous animals, could reduce genetic differentiation.  相似文献

The conservation of remnant grassland vegetation on the Victorian volcanic plain (VVP) is crucial for the persistence of local biodiversity. Recent habitat loss has restricted the grassland to only a small percentage of its former range. Along with grassland habitats, species that occur on the VVP are in decline and many are legally protected. Comesperma polygaloides is a grassland species of the VVP that also occurs outside of the region in woodland habitats. We use 12 neutral microsatellite loci and two chloroplast regions to understand genotypic patterns of C. polygaloides in southeastern Australia. We found separate genetic clusters but they do not follow geographic boundaries. There are fewer alleles (2.96) and effective alleles (2.01) than expected from 12 microsatellite markers compared to other species. Even with the low number of alleles per locus there was a moderate level of genetic diversity detected (I = 0.69; Ho = 0.43; He = 0.40). Populations of the VVP could not be differentiated from populations elsewhere using neutral markers or chloroplast analyses. The genetic structure discovered was not consistent with the level of fragmentation observed. There may be several reasons for the observed lack of genetic structure: the species is more common than perceived, plants are long-lived and can reproduce clonally, and the bioregion is relatively young, geologically. Results indicate that restoration projects and long-term viability of C. polygaloides will be improved by composite seed sourcing, alleviating the risk of insufficient genetic diversity posed by an over-emphasis on local provenancing.  相似文献

Estrogen receptor alpha (ERα), that mediates the biologic effects of estrogen in estrogen-sensitive tissues like breast, is genetically polymorphic. To evaluate the association between ?397 PvuII (T>C) and ?351 XbaI (A>G) restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) in intron 1 of ERα gene and susceptibility of breast cancer, we undertook a case–control study in BRCA1 185delAG and 5382insC/BRCA2 6174delT negative Portuguese women. The study population consisted of 107 patients with histological diagnosis of breast cancer and 121 women with no history of breast cancer. Genomic DNA was extracted from blood samples and genotyping analyses were performed by PCR–RFLP. XbaI polymorphism was associated with a significant reduced risk of breast cancer for carriers of the x allele in homozygozity (OR 0.178; 95 % CI 0.070–0.456; P < 0.001) or heterozigozity (OR 0.223; 95 % CI 0.089–0.561; P = 0.001). The PvuII polymorphism was associated with a non-significantly reduced risk. The combined analysis of PvuII and XbaI polymorphisms revealed none synergistic effect of the two genotypes, except for simultaneous carriers of pp and xx genotypes, that have a reduced risk of breast cancer (OR 0.226; 95 % CI 0.049–1.035; P = 0.044). The combination of PvuII and XbaI genotypes into haplotypes showed that carriers of two copies of the px (ppxx) haplotype had a reduced risk of breast cancer (OR 0.405; 95 % CI 0.194–0.843; P = 0.014), compared with PX (PPXX + PPXx + PpXX + PpXx) haplotypes. PvuII and XbaI polymorphisms were in linkage disequilibrium both in cases (D = 0.044, r2 = 0.049, X2 = 5.216, P = 0.022) and controls (D = 0.090, r2 = 0.139, X2 = 16.819, P < 0.001), but not in the entire sample population analyzed as a whole (D = 0.087, r2 = 0.0076, X2 = 1.733, P = 0.188). In conclusion, in this case–control study we found that ERα gene XbaI polymorphism may modify individual susceptibility for breast cancer in this population.  相似文献

Lespedeza cuneata (sericea) is an Asian legume introduced to the US in the 1930s for erosion control and forage, but it can strongly reduce the abundance of native grassland plants. One possible explanation for this high invasive capacity is that L. cuneata is able to alter soil conditions to either improve its own growth, or reduce growth of native plants. To test for soil alteration following invasion, we collected soil from a previous 3-year field experiment in which L. cuneata was established in or excluded from randomly selected plots in a restored grassland. These soil history treatments were crossed with soil autoclaving—to disrupt microbial communities potentially important to plant interactions. For each treatment combination, a native plant, Sorghastrum nutans, was grown with L. cuneata or a conspecific in a 12-week greenhouse experiment. Although we found no evidence for competitive effects on the native species, L. cuneata biomass increased when grown in soil with a L. cuneata history as opposed to non-invaded soil (F 1, 16 = 4.79, P = 0.04). Additionally, nodulation of L. cuneata increased in invaded compared to non-invaded soil (F 1, 16 = 6.01, P = 0.026). These results indicate that, within three years of invasion, L. cuneata is able to alter soils to facilitate its own growth and suggest that at least part of the invasive success of L. cuneata is linked to altered soil conditions.  相似文献

Age and growth estimates for the shortfin mako, Isurus oxyrinchus, derived from vertebral centra of 258 specimens (118 males, 140 females), ranging in size from 64 to 340 cm fork length (FL) were compared with data from 22 tag–recaptured individuals (74–193 cm FL) and length–frequency data from 1822 individuals (1035 males, 787 females; 65–215 cm FL). Annual band-pair deposition, confirmed by a concurrent bomb radiocarbon validation study, was used as the basis for band interpretation. Validation was further confirmed with a tetracycline-injected male shortfin mako recaptured after being at liberty off South Africa for 1 year and aged at 18 years. Growth rates from tag–recapture analysis (GROTAG) were higher than those derived from vertebral annuli and were only available from sharks up to 193 cm FL at recapture. Modal length–frequency data were used to verify the first four age classes. Growth curves were fit using both von Bertalanffy and Gompertz models. The 3-parameter version of the von Bertalanffy growth function produced the most biologically reasonable values for males, based on observed data (L  = 253 cm FL, K = 0.125 year?1 (estimated longevity = 21 year), and L 0 = 72 cm). The 3-parameter version of the Gompertz growth function produced the most biologically reasonable estimates, for females (L  = 366 cm FL, K = 0.087 year?1 (estimated longevity = 38 year) and L 0 = 88 cm. Males and females were aged to 29 (260 cm FL) and 32 years (335 cm FL), respectively. Both sexes grew similarly to age 11 (207 cm FL, 212 cm FL for males and females, respectively) when the curve leveled in males and continued to rise in females. Age at 50% maturity was estimated at 8 years for males (185 cm FL) and 18 years for females (275 cm FL). The species grows slower, matures later and has a longer life span than previously reported in North Atlantic waters.  相似文献

Objective of this study was to evaluate whether outdoor temperature and humidity can influence methacholine test results in outpatients living in temperate areas. 4,723 subjects (2,391 males; age: 35.1 ± 16.15; FEV1 = 100.36 % [relative interquartile range (IQR):92.34–108.8]) that performed methacholine tests for suspected asthma between 2000 and 2010 were considered. Outdoor minimum, mean, and maximum temperature values (°C), relative humidity (%), and dew point (T dp), registered when performing the tests, were examined. Airways hyperresponsive patients, with PD20 (provocative dose to obtain a 20 % fall in FEV1) <3,200 μg were 2,889 (61.2 %) and median PD20 was 359 μg [IQR:160-967]. On receiving operating curve (ROC) analysis, temperature, humidity, and T dp did not significantly predict airways hyperresponsiveness (AHR), even using a 200, 800, and 3,200 μg cutoffs to identify AHR. When subjects were subdivided into subgroups, according to different levels of temperature, humidity, and dew point, no differences in PD20 and prevalence were found. Only a higher number of hyperresponsive subjects was detected in smokers when they were tested in hot and humid conditions. A weak but significantly positive relationship between PD20 and mean, maximum, and minimum temperatures was detected in severe hyperresponsive subjects (PD20 < 200 μg) (r = 0.100, 0.112, 0.110, respectively; p = 0.001). The regression logistic model showed that maximum temperature was a significantly protective factor for AHR (OR:0.995, 95 % CI: 0.982–0.998; p = 0.012) especially in severe hyperresponsive subjects (OR:0.988, 95 % CI: 0.977–0.999; p = 0.035). In conclusion, weather conditions do not seem to influence PD20 values obtained with methacholine tests in real life. Hot and humid environments may increase the prevalence of AHR in smokers while a temperature increase may reduce the AHR risk especially in severe hyperresponsive subjects.  相似文献

The N2-fixing shrub Alnus viridis is currently encroaching on montane grasslands in the Alps as a result of reduced land management and complete abandonment. Alnus introduces large amounts of nitrogen (N) into these formerly N-poor grasslands and restricts the succession to montane forests. We studied pools and fluxes of N and the associated C pools in pastures (controls) and adjacent Alnus shrublands at two elevations (1650 versus 1950 m a.s.l.) in three valleys in the Swiss central Alps. The total N and C pools stored in 50-year-old Alnus shrubland did not exceed those in adjacent pastures with a total of approximately 610 g N m?2 in phytomass plus soil (down to 30 cm) at both elevations. In Alnus stands, reduced soil N pools balanced the gain in phytomass N pools, a likely result of a faster turnover of soil N. The soil solution under Alnus was continuously enriched with nitrate, with a total N leaching of 0.79 g N m?2 season?1 (June–October) under 50-year-old stands at both elevations and the highest flux of 1.76 g N m?2 season?1 in 25-year-old shrubland at low elevation, clearly indicating an excess of available N in Alnus shrubland. In contrast, N leaching across all pastures was close to zero (0.08 g N m?2) throughout the season. At the catchment scale, streamlet water showed increased nitrate concentrations with typical flushing peaks in spring and autumn, provided more than one fifth of the catchment area was covered by Alnus shrubs. We conclude that the expansion of Alnus rapidly converts centuries-old, N-poor grassland into N saturated shrubland, irrespective of elevation, and it reduces the C storage potential of the landscape because the Alnus dominance constrains re-establishment of a natural montane forest.  相似文献

Extralimital movements are of interest to ecologists and wildlife managers alike because they can be used to understand the ecological process of range establishment and to determine if management interventions are necessary. I summarize available information of 17 observations of extralimital movements of 23 bison (Bison bison) from two reintroduced populations in northwestern Canada, during 2000–2016. Distances recorded from the release sites and the centre of their range were 125–260 and 70–285 km, respectively. All observations were of adult (≥5 years old) males, and most (11 of 17) were of lone animals. Most (13 of 17) observations of extralimital bison were made during summer, ≥10 years after reintroduction. Results were similar for both populations. Four extralimital bison were killed by wildlife officials because of conflicts with agricultural interests; the fate of the others was unknown. These data point to the exploratory nature of reintroduced adult male bison during the summer, which may be a precursor to range expansion. Wildlife managers can monitor extralimital movements of reintroduced bison to identify potential areas of future range expansion or human-bison conflict. More generally, these observations may be useful to inform planning efforts for future reintroductions of bison.  相似文献

Understanding spatio-temporal patterns of grassland evapotranspiration (ET) and water use efficiency (WUE) in arid areas is important for livestock production and ecological conservation. Xinjiang, China, was used as an example in the Biome-BGC model to explore spatio-temporal patterns of grassland ET and WUE from 1979 to 2012 in arid areas. The ET ranked from high to low as follows: among seasons, summer (142.4 mm), spring (49.7 mm), autumn (45.9 mm) and winter (7.7 mm); among regions, the Tianshan Mountains (357.9 mm), northern Xinjiang (221.3 mm) and southern Xinjiang (183.2 mm); among grassland types, mid-mountain meadow (387.7 mm), swamp meadow (358.3 mm), typical grassland (343.9 mm), desert grassland (236.2 mm), alpine meadow (229.7 mm), and saline meadow (154.7 mm). The WUE ranked from high to low as follows: among seasons, summer (0.60 g C kg H2O?1), autumn (0.48 g C kg H2O?1) and spring (0.43 g C kg H2O?1); among regions, northern Xinjiang (0.73 g C kg H2O?1), the Tianshan Mountains (0.69 g C kg H2O?1) and southern Xinjiang (0.26 g C kg H2O?1); among grassland types, mid-mountain meadow (0.86 g C kg H2O?1), typical grassland (0.84 g C kg H2O?1), swamp meadow (0.77 g C kg H2O?1), saline meadow (0.52 g C kg H2O?1), alpine grassland (0.37 g C kg H2O?1) and desert grassland (0.34 g C kg H2O?1). In Xinjiang grasslands, the spatio-temporal ET patterns were more strongly influenced by precipitation than by temperature, whereas most high WUE values occurred when precipitation and temperature were relatively conducive to grass growth.  相似文献
