Wild chimpanzees make and use tools with far greater frequency and variety than wild baboons. Sampling differences; differences in the sensory, motor, or cognitive capacities for skilled tool use; or environmental differences are not responsible. Fortuitous discovery of novel forms of tool behavior probably occurs as rarely among chimpanzees as among baboons. However, research on wild and captive chimpanzees reveals that the discovery is transmitted quickly among chimpanzee groups by observation learning, and thus becomes well-established in the group's behavioral repertoire. In contrast, study of captive baboons reveals that they acquire little information about tool behavior by observation. With little observation learning the behavior is not likely to be acquired by other group members since repeated independent discovery is improbable. Thus chimpanzees' more proficient tool behavior is due mainly to their greater capacity for observation learning. This suggests that the advent of hominid tool traditions was accompanied by a capacity for facile observation learning and thus, perhaps, by language ability.  相似文献

Abstract

The tribe Cricetodontini is a common cricetid group found in several European basins from the Miocene. Here we present a study of the fossils of this group found in the Duero Basin. We updated the biostratigraphical assignation of some of the localities in which several species of Cricetodontini have been found. Cricetodontini remains from eight localities from the central sector of the Duero Basin have been described, measured and assigned to a species. The presence in these localities of Hispanomys aguirrei, H. lavocati, H. nombrevillae and H. aragonensis has allowed correlating them to the biostratigraphic scale built for the Miocene in Calatayud-Daroca Basin, identifying biozones G3, H and I (MN7/8 – MN10, Late Aragonian – Early Vallesian, Middle – Late Miocene). Furthermore, this study constitutes the first citation of this species in this basin, except H. aguirrei, previously described in the Duero Basin. After this work, the biostratigraphical assignation of the studied sites is now well known. We evidenced the resemblance of Duero and Calatayud-Daroca basins.  相似文献

Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) is an autosomal recessive lipid-storage disorder caused by a deficiency of the mitochondrial sterol 27-hydroxylase. Genetic analysis utilizing SSCP and direct DNA sequencing identified a new mutation. One base-pair of cytosine was deleted at codon 326 on exon 2 of CYP27 in all CTX patients while their father was heterozygotic. This novel point deletion predicts a frameshift in mRNA (Pro(102) -->Leu) and results in the appearance of a premature termination codon (TGA) to substitute for Val(106) (GTG). To characterize the pathological mechanism of CTX patients, the protein profiles of serum and leukocytes extracted from these subjects were presented by means of proteomic technologies including 2-DE and MALDI-TOF analysis. According to the results, the amount of vinculin, ABP-280, talin and vimentin in leukocytes of CTX patients had changed significantly, reflecting the changes in membrane dynamics concerning cholestanol accumulation. The expression of target proteins in CTX patients and control was further verified by western blotting which indicated the same tendency as 2-DE data. This is the first paper to integrate both genomic and proteomic concepts for analyzing the possible mechanism of CTX and provides more information for related study in the future.  相似文献

Human menopause is remarkable in that reproductive senescence is markedly accelerated relative to somatic aging, leaving an extended postreproductive period for a large proportion of women. Functional explanations for this are debated, in part because comparative data from closely related species are inadequate. Existing studies of chimpanzees are based on very small samples and have not provided clear conclusions about the reproductive function of aging females. These studies have not examined whether reproductive senescence in chimpanzees exceeds the pace of general aging, as in humans, or occurs in parallel with declines in overall health, as in many other animals. In order to remedy these problems, we examined fertility and mortality patterns in six free-living chimpanzee populations. Chimpanzee and human birth rates show similar patterns of decline beginning in the fourth decade, suggesting that the physiology of reproductive senescence was relatively conserved in human evolution. However, in contrast to humans, chimpanzee fertility declines are consistent with declines in survivorship, and healthy females maintain high birth rates late into life. Thus, in contrast to recent claims, we find no evidence that menopause is a typical characteristic of chimpanzee life histories.  相似文献

BRAF is a highly regulated protein kinase that controls cell fate in animal cells. Recent structural analyses have revealed how active and inactive forms of BRAF bind to dimers of the scaffold protein 14-3-3. Inactive BRAF binds to 14-3-3 as a monomer and is held in an inactive conformation by interactions with ATP and the substrate kinase MEK, a striking example of enzyme inhibition by substrate binding. A change in the phosphorylation state of BRAF shifts the stoichiometry of the BRAF:14-3-3 complex from 1:2 to 2:2, resulting in stabilization of the active dimeric form of the kinase. These new findings uncover unexpected features of the regulatory mechanisms underlying Raf biology and help explain the paradoxical activation of Raf by small-molecule inhibitors.  相似文献

As the genomes of many organisms have been sequenced, a variety of global analyses, called 'omics,' have been initiated. Cloning of the set of all open reading frames encoded by the genome (ORFeome) of an organism is a major challenge, which serves as an indispensable provision before one launches into the ocean of the postgenomic world. A suitable strategy for high-throughput cloning and expression of thousands of genes is crucial to success. Recently developed systems employing site-specific or homologous recombination have made it feasible to manipulate thousands of ORFs en masse. Using these technologies, several recent studies have successfully fished biologically active small molecules and target proteins out of this bountiful ocean.  相似文献

Historical opinions of the “species problem” are briefly reviewed, and four salient stages are recognized according to origin of species concepts. We propose that species is the unit preserving superior gene assembly and is maintained by specific mechanisms. Based on characteristics of plant evolution, we assume that understanding plant species may include three stages, i.e. morphological recognition stage, multidisciplinary verification stage, and illuminating mechanisms preserving superior gene assembly.  相似文献

Considerable knowledge is available on the neural substrates for speech and language from brain-imaging studies in humans, but until recently there was a lack of data for comparison from other animal species on the evolutionarily conserved brain regions that process species-specific communication signals. To obtain new insights into the relationship of the substrates for communication in primates, we compared the results from several neuroimaging studies in humans with those that have recently been obtained from macaque monkeys and chimpanzees. The recent work in humans challenges the longstanding notion of highly localized speech areas. As a result, the brain regions that have been identified in humans for speech and nonlinguistic voice processing show a striking general correspondence to how the brains of other primates analyze species-specific vocalizations or information in the voice, such as voice identity. The comparative neuroimaging work has begun to clarify evolutionary relationships in brain function, supporting the notion that the brain regions that process communication signals in the human brain arose from a precursor network of regions that is present in nonhuman primates and is used for processing species-specific vocalizations. We conclude by considering how the stage now seems to be set for comparative neurobiology to characterize the ancestral state of the network that evolved in humans to support language.  相似文献

Two types of use of “hammers” for cracking nuts by wild-living chimpanzees have been distinguished: (1) Relatively small stones are used by the chimpanzee community at Bossou in Guinea to crack the nuts of oil palms growing on abandoned farmland, while no nuts of wild tree species are cracked. (2) Larger hammer stones (and, at some sites, wooden clubs) are used in a more sophisticated manner to crack the nuts of wild trees, but not of oil palms, in an area ranging from south-east Sierra Leone through Liberia to the south-west of the Ivory Coast. The first author (1986) has proposed that Type I has been copied by the chimpanzees, under pressure of food shortage, from the local human population. New data now indicate that, at Bossou, while habitat deterioration has continued, the number of hammer and anvil stones per utilized oil palm tree has approximately tripled in the last six years. The quantity of food obtained from oil palm nut kernels, however, amounts to only a few percent of the total diet. For the rest these apes depend to a large extent on many other agricultural products cultivated at Bossou which they are allowed freely to consume, including even cassava (manioc) roots and sweet potatoes dug by them from the ground. Some factors determining the chosen size of hammers were analyzed. Two abnormal hammers were found whose wear suggested a tentative, human-like manner of use. No evidence has been found to indicate the use of stone tools by chimpanzees in the adjoining chimpanzee-inhabited areas around the range of the Bossou community. Type II stone tool use was found, however, in a primary forest on a mountain≈13 km west of Bossou. This is especially intriguing because the site is separated by a wide belt of drier rain forest from the belt of very humid rain forest in the south where all the other known Type II sites are located. More research on the geographical distribution of the use of stone tools by chimpanzees and on the underlying ecological factors is recommended.  相似文献

Over the past three years (2020–2022) more structures of GPCRs have been determined than in the previous twenty years (2000–2019), primarily of GPCR complexes that are large enough for structure determination by single-particle cryo-EM. This review will present some structural highlights that have advanced our molecular understanding of promiscuous G protein coupling, how a G protein receptor kinase and β-arrestins couple to GPCRs, and GPCR dimerisation. We will also discuss advances in the use of gene fusions, nanobodies, and Fab fragments to facilitate the structure determination of GPCRs in the inactive state that, on their own, are too small for structure determination by single-particle cryo-EM.  相似文献

Although tool use is known to occur in species ranging from naked mole rats [1] to owls [2], chimpanzees are the most accomplished tool users [3-5]. The modification and use of tools during hunting, however, is still considered to be a uniquely human trait among primates. Here, we report the first account of habitual tool use during vertebrate hunting by nonhumans. At the Fongoli site in Senegal, we observed ten different chimpanzees use tools to hunt prosimian prey in 22 bouts. This includes immature chimpanzees and females, members of age-sex classes not normally characterized by extensive hunting behavior. Chimpanzees made 26 different tools, and we were able to recover and analyze 12 of these. Tool construction entailed up to five steps, including trimming the tool tip to a point. Tools were used in the manner of a spear, rather than a probe or rousing tool. This new information on chimpanzee tool use has important implications for the evolution of tool use and construction for hunting in the earliest hominids, especially given our observations that females and immature chimpanzees exhibited this behavior more frequently than adult males.  相似文献

Recently developed NMR methods have been applied to discover carbohydrate ligands for proteins and to identify their binding epitopes. The structural details of carbohydrate-protein complexes have also been examined by NMR, providing site-specific information on the architecture, binding selectivity and plasticity of the carbohydrate-binding sites of the proteins. New insights into the conformational behaviour of free and protein-bound glycomimetics pave the way for the design of carbohydrate-based therapeutics. Finally, recent progress towards elucidating the influence of glycosylation on peptide conformation will be of key importance to fully understanding the role of carbohydrates in the function of glycopeptides.  相似文献

In modern medicine, the placebo response or placebo effect has often been regarded as a nuisance in basic research and particularly in clinical research. The latest scientific evidence has demonstrated, however, that the placebo effect and the nocebo effect, the negative effects of placebo, stem from highly active processes in the brain that are mediated by psychological mechanisms such as expectation and conditioning. These processes have been described in some detail for many diseases and treatments, and we now know that they can represent both strength and vulnerability in the course of a disease as well as in the response to a therapy. However, recent research and current knowledge raise several issues that we shall address in this review. We will discuss current neurobiological models like expectation-induced activation of the brain reward circuitry, Pavlovian conditioning, and anxiety mechanisms of the nocebo response. We will further explore the nature of the placebo responses in clinical trials and address major questions for future research such as the relationship between expectations and conditioning in placebo effects, the existence of a consistent brain network for all placebo effects, the role of gender in placebo effects, and the impact of getting drug-like effects without drugs.  相似文献
