The shell microstructure of the genus Monticlarella Wisniewska, 1932 is studied for the first time, with the species M. nova (Karakash, 1907) and M. lineolata (Phillips, 1835) from the Upper Hauterivian–Lower Barremian of Crimea being used as an example. It is shown that there is a strong similarity between the shell structure of this genus and another representative of the family Norellidae, Suiaella, thus supporting the possibility of using the shell microstructure as a diagnostic feature of the family Norellidae.  相似文献

The validity of the little-known ichnospecies Entobia exogyrarum (Fri?) is verified. Shells of an oyster, Rhynchostreon suborbiculatum (Lam.), represent the substrate for the sponge borings. The borings occur in many Upper Cenomanian to Middle Turonian localities of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin. This study revealed that the sponges attacked shells of living oysters. Entobia exogyrarum (Fri?) also represents one of the shallowest occurrences of Entobia borings in the Upper Cretaceous rocks.  相似文献

Reexamination of the holotype of Riabininohadros weberae from the Upper Cretaceous (upper Maastrichtian) of the Crimean Peninsula (Besh-Kosh) allowed determination of previously unknown elements of the femur, astragalus, and calcaneus. This taxon shows a set of primitive characters observed in iguanodontids and basal ornithischians and is referred to as Styracosterna indet. The second dinosaur specimen from Crimea (Aleshino) is a fragmentary skeleton, including cervical and dorsal vertebrae. It possibly belongs to advanced iguanodontids or primitive hadrosauroids. Thus, in the Maastrichtian of the Crimean Peninsula, at least two dinosaur species coexisted.  相似文献

Morphology and ethology of the Middle–Late Jurassic oyster “Liostrea” roemeri (Quenstedt) from the Upper Callovian of the Volga Region near Saratov and Middle Volgian of the Subpolar Urals are considered. The inverted shell shape and presence of a beaked umbo on the right valves allow the assignment of these oysters to a new monotypic genus, Argutostrea Kosenko, gen. nov. Features of the internal valve structure examined in only one specimen suggest that the new genus should tentatively be included in the subfamily Pycnodonteinae Stenzel, 1959 of the family Gryphaeidae Vialov, 1936. It is shown that shell morphology of the oyster A. roemeri is connected with transition to dwelling on floating ammonites.  相似文献

Abstract

In the past, fossilised dinosaur eggshells have been extensively documented from the Upper Cretaceous Lameta Formation of Central India and as many as nine oospecies are known at present from this formation. Compared to this, only one dinosaur oospecies has been described from the Cretaceous succession of the Cauvery Basin. However, the first fossil egg from India, identified as a chelonian egg, was documented from the Aptian – Albian Karai Formation of the Cauvery Basin in 1957. Following this, a solitary titanosaurid dinosaur egg was described from the Upper Cretaceous (Lower Maastrichtian) Kallankuruchhi Formation, Cauvery Basin in 1996. More recently, we have recovered isolated eggshell fragments from the marine part of the Upper Cretaceous (Late Maastrichtian) Kallamedu Formation. Based on eggshell morphology, microstructure and ultrastructure, these eggshell fragments are assigned to the oospecies Fusioolithus baghensis. The new find from the Cauvery Basin is important from palaeobiogeographic point of view as the oofamily Fusioolithidae is found in the Upper Cretaceous strata of India, France, Argentina and Morocco. Based on the common occurrence of similar oospecies in South America, Africa, Europe and India, a Late Cretaceous palaeobiogeographic connection between India and South America as well as Europe via Africa is suggested.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the calcitic prisms of the prismatic shell layers of pteriomorph bivalves was examined by scanning electronic microscopy and diffraction techniques. Results indicate that the internal structure of the prisms is noticeably different among taxa. In species belonging to the families Pinnidae, Pteriidae, and Isognomonidae (Pterioida), prisms are built up with nanometric calcite crystals. On the other hand, Pectinidae, Propeamussliidae, Anomiidae (order Pectinoida) and the Ostreidae (Ostreoida) have prisms constituted by calcitic laths with micrometric size. These laths are indistinguishable from those constituting the foliated microstructure. In almost all cases, there is mineral continuity from the prisms to the underlying foliated layer, as confirmed by X-ray texture analyses. These findings corroborate a previous assumption that the foliated microstructure derived from calcitic prisms, particularly from those with internal foliated structure. The appearance of the foliated microstructure facilitated drastic mineralogical and microstructural changes in pteriomorph shells-for example, the development of rigid shell margins and the production of largely calcitic shells. Such changes have, no doubt, contributed to the evolutionary success of the groups, which have shown a pronounced diversification over time.  相似文献

The microstructure of aragonitic and calcitic shells of the genus Palaeomutela Amalitzky, 1891 is examined. The aragonitic shell consists of three main layers, each is distinguished by certain crossed lamellar microstructure: comarginal, radial, and complex. As aragonite is recrystallized into pelitic calcite, microstructural shell features are preserved. Many species of Palaeomutela from localities of different age display the same microstructural pattern, which is possible to regard as a character of generic rank.  相似文献

Summary The number, morphological details and structure of ostracod shells washed from chalk by mechanical disaggregation differ from those in siliceous chalk treated by hydrofluoric acid (HF, conc.). The shells studied are from erratic material (Ger. “Schollen”, “Geschiebe”) of young Quaternary deposits from Nossentin near Malchow/Mecklenburg, NE Germany; Wicko (Vietzig) near Miedzyzdroje (Misdroy), Isle of Wolin/Baltic Sea, NW Poland (Upper Turonian) and from outcropping chalk (Lower Maastrichtian) of the Island of Rügen/Baltic Sea, NE Germany as well as erratic boulders (Upper Maastrichtian), NE Germany. The differences in the number of shells and their state of preservation are primarily caused by biotic and nonbiotic influences after death, e.g. loss of organic substance and shell deformation by low pressure. Greater destruction of the shell and its sculpture is caused by pressure (sedimentary compaction), recrystallization, sparitization and accretine crystallization of the shell calcite during diagenesis. The silification process or origin of flint in chalk is caused by weakly acidic environmental conditions (pH<5) before sedimentary compaction. It is indicated by dispersed pyrite and by well-preserved siliceous radiolarian skeletons. Finely-foliated opal-CT crystals start growing between the crystallites of the ostracod shell, later on forming lepispheres. Silification is early diagenetic, as verified by the well-preserved shell sculpture and structure and the undisturbed bioturbate structure in siliceous nodules.  相似文献

Summary The microproblematicumPycnoporidium ? eomesozoicum Flügel, 1972, from Upper Triassic reefs of the Alpine-Mediterranean region, Turkey Oman and Iran (originally interpreted as possible alga) represents the type species of a new strophomenid brachiopod genus (Gosaukammerella n.g.). The genus is characterized by a very small, millimeter-sized plano-convex shell, whose ventral valve is attached to the substratum (mainly sponges) by symmetrically arranged outgrowths developing from a pseudopunctate, lamellose foliated shell wall and composed of densely spaced subparallel ‘tubes’ comparable with productide spines secreted by papillose extensions of the mantle.Gosaukammerella seems to be the only reliable candidate for the existence of post-Paleozoic strophomenid (productid ?) brachiopods. Gosaukammerella eomesozoica is restricted to possibly cryptic, shaded reef environments inhabited predominantly by sponges serving as substrates for micromorphic brachiopods.  相似文献

Hyoliths were among the earliest biomineralizing metazoans in Palaeozoic marine environments. They have been known for two centuries and widely assigned to lophotrochozoans. However, their origin and relationships with modern lophotrochozoan clades have been a longstanding palaeontological controversy. Here, we provide broad microstructural data from hyolith conchs and opercula from the lower Cambrian Xinji Formation of North China, including two hyolithid genera and four orthothecid genera as well as unidentified opercula. Results show that most hyolith conchs contain a distinct aragonitic lamellar layer that is composed of foliated aragonite, except in the orthothecid New taxon 1 that has a crossed foliated lamellar microstructure. Opercula are mostly composed of foliated aragonite and occasionally foliated calcite. These blade or lath‐like microstructural fabrics coincide well with biomineralization of Cambrian molluscs rather than lophophorates, as exemplified by the Cambrian members of the tommotiid‐brachiopod linage. Accordingly, we propose that hyoliths and molluscs might have inherited their biomineralized skeletons from a non‐mineralized or weakly mineralized common ancestor rather than as a result of convergence. Consequently, from the view of biomineralization, the homologous shell microstructures in Cambrian hyoliths and molluscs strongly strengthen the phylogenetic links between the two groups.  相似文献

We describe here fossil leaves and fruits assignable to the family Nelumbonaceae Dumortier 1828. Fossils were collected at the Cañadón del Irupé locality, La Colonia Formation (Campanian–Maastrichtian, Upper Cretaceous), Chubut Province, Patagonia, Argentina. The fossil leaves are simple, with symmetrical and peltate lamina, orbicular in shape, and an entire margin. The venation is truly actinodromous with at least 15 primary veins, the secondary veins are poorly developed and intercalated with the primary veins, the third category vein is opposite, and the areoles are well-developed and 4- to 5-sided. These features are characteristic of the extant genus Nelumbo Adamson 1763, and the presence of these characters in the fossils allows their placement within this genus. Reproductive structures, similar to the fruit-receptacle of Nelumbo with fruits in situ, were found associated but not in organic connection with the leaves. These fossils constitute the only and oldest record for the family in the Southern Hemisphere. This record indicates that Nelumbo was more widespread in the past than today.  相似文献

The adult shell (teleoconch) of the enigmatic tubular Givetian fossil Trypanopora is comprised of two principal layers: an outer fibrous prismatic layer and an inner micro-lamellar (irregular cross-bladed) layer, with local, closely-spaced disruptive punctation. The fine preservation suggests an original calcite composition. The shell microstructure shows great similarities with that of both vermiform 'gastropods' and tentaculitoids, suggesting a close affinity between Trypanopora and these groups. The septa have an irregular micro-lamellar (cross-bladed) microstructure in continuity with the inner wall, and a morphology unlike that of any known mollusc. The interaction is reported of selected chemical elements (cadmium, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, strontium, and zinc) in cultured sea water, with soft tissues, prismatic calcite of the right valve, and foliated calcite of right and left valves of genetically similar American oysters, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin) grown in a natural habitat and in two environmentally controlled experimental systems (flow-through and recycle). The addition of trace elements as algal nutrients in ambient sea water was reflected in higher concentrations of trace metals in shells and soft tissues of oysters grown in experimental systems. Calcium was relatively uniformly distributed in major regions of valves from the three habitats, even though its concentration fluctuated widely in sea water in experimental systems. Magnesium and strontium were most concentrated in valves of oysters grown in the recycle system (magnesium in the prismatic layer of the shell and strontium in the foliated calcite). Iron was uniformly distributed. Cadmium, copper, manganese, and zinc were most concentrated in the prismatic calcite of valves from the flow-through system. In soft tissues, calcium was more concentrated in oysters from experimental systems than in those from the natural habitat. Manganese was about equally distributed in soft tissues from the three habitats, whereas copper and iron were more concentrated in soft tissues in experimental systems than in the natural habitat, and were many times more concentrated in soft tissues than in valves from all three habitats. As concentrations of magnesium, strontium, mangenese, zinc, and cadmium increased in valves in experimental systems, pigmentation of valves decreased. The study confirmed the capacity of oysters to concentrate several elements in their valves as concentration of these elements increased in ambient sea water and disclosed the heterogeneous distribution of these elements in major regions of the valves.  相似文献

The shell morphological variation of the periwinkle Littoraria angulifera (Lamarck, 1822) was studied in tropical northeast Brazilian mangroves. This area was selected because mangroves in different stages of regeneration, and thus different tree heights can be found. We evaluated whether differences in solar radiation due to differences in tree height influenced the distribution and shell morphology of L. angulifera, and carried out an experiment to test if individuals collected from mangroves with different tree heights differed in their resistance to desiccation. We also analysed if there were differences in L. angulifera shell length and shape between tidal levels within a mangrove. Finally, we tested if increased habitat complexity due to the presence of oysters could influence L. angulifera shell length and shape in different-statured mangroves. We predicted that the oysters could reduce desiccation stress on periwinkles in small-statured mangroves but have no effect in taller ones. Shell length and shape varied among mangroves, although a large variation within mangroves was also recorded. Shell proportionality (shell length:width ratio) increased with shell length, and this relationship differed among mangroves; however, no differences were found in a subsequent year. Individuals from small-statured mangroves survived longer than those from taller mangroves in the desiccation experiment, with a weak correlation between shell proportionality and loss of mass. The presence of oysters had no apparent influence on shell morphology that could be correlated with reduced desiccation stress. The patterns found varied greatly both at small and large spatial scales, suggesting that future studies should evaluate phenotypic and genetic variation at the same time to properly understand variation in L. angulifera shell morphology.  相似文献

Two new species of the genus Liuenella Georgescu, 2010 from the Middle-Upper Turonian of the Crimea are described. A distinctive feature of Liuenella is the crater-like shape of pores on the shell surface. Based on characters of the new species, the diagnosis of the genus Liuenella, its stratigraphic range, and paleobiogeographical distribution are supplemented.  相似文献
