Benefiting from the high abundance and low cost of sodium resource, rechargeable sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are regarded as promising candidates for large‐scale electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Due to the heavier mass and larger radius of Na+ than that of Li+, SIBs with inorganic electrode materials are currently plagued with low capacity and insufficient cycling life. In comparison, organic electrode materials display the advantages of structure designability, high capacity and low limitation of cationic radius. However, organic electrode materials also encounter issues such as high‐solubility in electrolyte and low conductivity. Here, recently reported organic electrode materials, which mainly include the reactions based on either carbon‐oxygen double bond or carbon‐nitrogen double bond, and doping reactions, are systematically reviewed. Furthermore, the design strategies of organic electrodes are comprehensively summarized. The working voltage is regulated through controlling the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energies. The theoretical capacity can be enhanced by increasing the active groups. The dissolution is inhibited with elevating the intermolecular forces with proper molecular weight. The conductivity can be improved with extending conjugated structures. Future research into organic electrodes should focus on the development of full SIBs with aqueous/aprotic electrolytes and long cycling stability.  相似文献

An all‐organic battery consisting of two redox‐polymers, namely poly(2‐vinylthianthrene) and poly(2‐methacrylamide‐TCAQ) is assembled. This all‐organic battery shows excellent performance characteristics, namely flat discharge plateaus, an output voltage exceeding 1.3 V, and theoretical capacities of both electrodes higher than 100 mA h g?1. Both organic electrode materials are synthesized in two respective three synthetic steps using the free‐radical polymerization technique. Li‐organic batteries manufactured from these polymers prove their suitability as organic electrode materials. The cathode material poly(2‐vinylthianthrene) (3) displays a discharging plateau at 3.95 V versus Li+/Li and a discharge capacity of 105 mA h g?1, corresponding to a specific energy of about 415 mW h g?1. The anode material poly(2‐methacrylamide‐TCAQ) (7) exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 130 mA h g?1, corresponding to 94% material activity. The combination of both materials results in an all‐organic battery with a discharge voltage of 1.35 V and an initial discharge capacity of 105 mA h g?1 (95% material activity).  相似文献

The development of the next‐generation lithium ion battery requires environmental‐friendly electrode materials with long cycle life and high energy density. Organic compounds are a promising potential source of electrode materials for lithium ion batteries due to their advantages of chemical richness at the molecular level, cost benefit, and environmental friendliness, but they suffer from low capacity and dissatisfactory cycle life mainly due to hydrophobic dissolution in organic electrolytes and poor electronic conductivity. In this work, two types of triazine‐based covalent organic nanosheets (CONs) are exfoliated and composited with carbon nanotubes. The thin‐layered 2D structure for the exfoliated CONs can activate more functional groups for lithium storage and boost the utilization efficiency of redox sites compared to its bulk counterpart. Large reversible capacities of above 1000 mAh g?1 can be achieved after 250 cycles, which is comparable to high‐capacity inorganic electrodes. Moreover, the lithium‐storage mechanism is determined to be an intriguing 11 and 16 electron redox reaction, associated with the organic groups (unusual triazine ring, piperazine ring, and benzene ring, and common C?N, ? NH? groups).  相似文献

Organic redox compounds are emerging electrode materials for rechargeable lithium batteries. However, their electrically insulating nature plagues efficient charge transport within the electroactive bulk. Alternative to the popular solution of elaborating nanocomposite materials, herein we report on a molecular‐level engineering strategy towards high‐power organic electrode materials with multi‐electron reactions. Systematic comparisons of anthraquinone analogues incorporating fused heteroaromatic structures as cathode materials in rechargeable lithium batteries reveal that the judicious incorporation of heteroaromatics improves the cell performance in terms of specific gravimetric capacity, working potential, rate capability, and cyclability. Combination studies with morphological observation, electrochemical impedance characterization, and theoretical modeling provide insight into the advantage of heteroaromatic building blocks. In particular, benzofuro[5,6‐b]furan‐4,8‐dione ( BFFD ) bearing furan moeities shows a reversible capacity of 181 mAh g?1 when charged/discharged at 100C, corresponding to a power density of 29.8 kW kg?1. These results have pointed to a general design route of high‐rate organic electrode materials by rational functionalization of redox compounds with appropriate heteroaromatic units as versatile structural tools.  相似文献

Increasing worldwide energy demands and rising CO2 emissions have motivated a search for new technologies to take advantage of renewables such as solar and wind energies. Redox flow batteries (RFBs) with their high power density, high energy efficiency, scalability (up to MW and MWh), and safety features are one suitable option for integrating such energy sources and overcoming their intermittency. However, resource limitation and high system costs of current RFB technologies impede wide implementation. Here, a total organic aqueous redox flow battery (OARFB) is reported, using low‐cost and sustainable methyl viologen (MV, anolyte) and 4‐hydroxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐oxyl (4‐HO‐TEMPO, catholyte), and benign NaCl supporting electrolyte. The electrochemical properties of the organic redox active materials are studied using cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode voltammetry. The MV/4‐HO‐TEMPO ARFB has an exceptionally high cell voltage, 1.25 V. Prototypes of the organic ARFB can be operated at high current densities ranging from 20 to 100 mA cm2, and deliver stable capacity for 100 cycles with nearly 100% Coulombic efficiency. The MV/4‐HO‐TEMPO ARFB displays attractive technical merits and thus represents a major advance in ARFBs.  相似文献

High‐capacity Li‐rich layered oxide cathodes along with Si‐incorporated graphite anodes have high reversible capacity, outperforming the electrode materials used in existing commercial products. Hence, they are potential candidates for the development of high‐energy‐density lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). However, structural degradation induced by loss of interfacial stability is a roadblock to their practical use. Here, the use of malonic acid‐decorated fullerene (MA‐C60) with superoxide dismutase activity and water scavenging capability as an electrolyte additive to overcome the structural instability of high‐capacity electrodes that hampers the battery quality is reported. Deactivation of PF5 by water scavenging leads to the long‐term stability of the interfacial structures of electrodes. Moreover, an MA‐C60‐added electrolyte deactivates the reactive oxygen species and constructs an electrochemically robust cathode‐electrolyte interface for Li‐rich cathodes. This work paves the way for new possibilities in the design of electrolyte additives by eliminating undesirable reactive substances and tuning the interfacial structures of high‐capacity electrodes in LIBs.  相似文献

An organic cathode material based on a copolymer of poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) containing pyridine and hydroquinone functionalities is described as a proton trap technology. Utilizing the quinone to hydroquinone redox conversion, this technology leads to electrode materials compatible with lithium and sodium cycling chemistries. These materials have high inherent potentials that in combination with lithium give a reversible output voltage of above 3.5 V (vs Li0/+) without relying on lithiation of the material, something that is not showed for quinones previously. Key to success stems from coupling an intrapolymeric proton transfer, realized by an incorporated pyridine proton donor/acceptor functionality, with the hydroquinone redox reactions. Trapping of protons in the cathode material effectively decouples the quinone redox chemistry from the cycling chemistry of the anode, which makes the material insensitive to the nature of the electrolyte cation and hence compatible with several anode materials. Furthermore, the conducting polymer backbone allows assembly without any additives for electronic conductivity. The concept is demonstrated by electrochemical characterization in several electrolytes and finally by employing the proton trap material as the cathode in lithium and sodium batteries. These findings represent a new concept for enabling high potential organic materials for the next generation of energy storage systems.  相似文献

Water‐soluble redox‐active organic molecules have attracted extensive attention as electrical energy storage alternatives to redox‐active metals that are low in abundance and high in cost. Here an aqueous zinc–organic hybrid redox flow battery (RFB) is reported with a positive electrolyte comprising a functionalized 1,4‐hydroquinone bearing four (dimethylamino)methyl groups dissolved in sulfuric acid. By utilizing a three‐electrolyte, two‐membrane configuration this acidic positive electrolyte is effectively paired with an alkaline negative electrolyte comprising a Zn/[Zn(OH)4]2? redox couple and a hybrid RFB is operated at a high operating voltage of 2.0 V. It is shown that the electrochemical reversibility and kinetics of the organic redox species can be enhanced by an electrocatalyst, leading to a cyclic voltammetry peak separation as low as 35 mV and enabling an enhanced rate capability.  相似文献

The combination of high‐capacity anodes and high‐voltage cathodes has garnered a great deal of attention in the pursuit of high‐energy‐density lithium‐ion batteries. As a facile and scalable electrode‐architecture strategy to achieve this goal, a direct one‐pot decoration of high‐capacity silicon (Si) anode materials and of high‐voltage LiCoO2 (LCO) cathode materials is demonstrated with colloidal nanoparticles composed of electroconductive antimony‐doped tin oxide (ATO). The unusual ATO nanoparticle shells enhance electronic conduction in the LCO and Si electrode materials and mitigate unwanted interfacial side reactions between the electrode materials and liquid electrolytes. The ATO‐coated LCO materials (ATO‐LCO) enable the construction of a high‐mass‐loading cathode and suppress the dissolution of cobalt and the generation of by‐products during high‐voltage cycling. In addition, the ATO‐coated Si (ATO‐Si) anodes exhibit highly stable capacity retention upon cycling. Integration of the high‐voltage ATO‐LCO cathode and high‐capacity ATO‐Si anode into a full cell configuration brings unprecedented improvements in the volumetric energy density and in the cycling performance compared to a commercialized cell system composed of LCO/graphite.  相似文献

Fluorine substitution is a critical enabler for improving the cycle life and energy density of disordered rocksalt (DRX) Li‐ion battery cathode materials which offer prospects for high energy density cathodes, without the reliance on limited mineral resources. Due to the strong Li–F interaction, fluorine also is expected to modify the short‐range cation order in these materials which is critical for Li‐ion transport. In this work, density functional theory and Monte Carlo simulations are combined to investigate the impact of Li–F short‐range ordering on the formation of Li percolation and diffusion in DRX materials. The modeling reveals that F substitution is always beneficial at sufficiently high concentrations and can, surprisingly, even facilitate percolation in compounds without Li excess, giving them the ability to incorporate more transition metal redox capacity and thereby higher energy density. It is found that for F levels below 15%, its effect can be beneficial or disadvantageous depending on the intrinsic short‐range order in the unfluorinated oxide, while for high fluorination levels the effects are always beneficial. Using extensive simulations, a map is also presented showing the trade‐off between transition‐metal capacity, Li‐transport, and synthetic accessibility, and two of the more extreme predictions are experimentally confirmed.  相似文献

A non‐aqueous lithium‐ion redox flow battery employing organic molecules is proposed and investigated. 2,5‐Di‐tert‐butyl‐1,4‐bis(2‐methoxyethoxy)benzene and a variety of molecules derived from quinoxaline are employed as initial high‐potential and low‐potential active materials, respectively. Electrochemical measurements highlight that the choice of electrolyte and of substituent groups can have a significant impact on redox species performance. The charge‐discharge characteristics are investigated in a modified coin‐cell configuration. After an initial break‐in period, coulombic and energy efficiencies for this unoptimized system are ~70% and ~37%, respectively, with major charge and discharge plateaus between 1.8‐2.4 V and 1.7‐1.3 V, respectively, for 30 cycles. Performance enhancements are expected with improvements in cell design and materials processing.  相似文献

Herein, a two‐species redox reaction of Co(II)/Co(III) and Fe(II)/Fe(III) incorporated in cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoFe(CN)6) is proposed as a breakthrough to achieve jointly high‐capacity and high‐voltage aqueous Zn‐ion battery. The Zn/CoFe(CN)6 battery provides a highly operational voltage plateau of 1.75 V (vs metallic Zn) and a high capacity of 173.4 mAh g?1 at current density of 0.3 A g?1, taking advantage of the two‐species redox reaction of Co(II)/Co(III) and Fe(II)/Fe(III) couples. Even under extremely fast charge/discharge rate of 6 A g?1, the battery delivers a sufficiently high discharge capacity of 109.5 mAh g?1 with its 3D opened structure framework. This is the highest capacity delivered among all the batteries using Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) cathode up to now. Furthermore, Zn/CoFe(CN)6 battery achieves an excellent cycling performance of 2200 cycles without any capacity decay at coulombic efficiency of nearly 100%. One further step, a sol–gel transition strategy for hydrogel electrolyte is developed to construct high‐performance flexible cable‐type battery. With the strategy, the active materials can adequately contact with electrolyte, resulting in improved electrochemical performance (≈18.73% capacity increase) and mechanical robustness of the solid‐state device. It is believed that this study optimizes electrodes by incorporating multi redox reaction species for high‐voltage and high‐capacity batteries.  相似文献

Nanostructured electrode materials are good candidates in batteries especially for high‐rate applications, yet they often suffer from extensive side reactions due to anomalously large surface areas. While micrometer‐size materials provide better stability, the lattice diffusivity is often too slow for lithium ion intercalation over the same length scale in a short time. Herein, a simple method to synthesize glass‐ceramic‐like vanadate cathodes for lithium‐ion batteries with abundant internal boundaries that allow fast lithium ion diffusion while maintaining a small surface area that thus minimize the contact and side reactions with organic electrolyte, is reported. Such samples heat‐treated under optimized conditions can deliver an impressive high‐rate capacity of 103 mAh g?1 at 4000 mA g?1 over 500 cycles, which has better kinetics and cycling stability than similar vanadate‐based materials. A striking grain‐size refinement effect accompanied by a low‐temperature growth‐controlled phase transition, can be achieved by fine tuning the heat‐treatment process. It is believed that the findings are general for other transition metal oxides for energy applications.  相似文献

Based on cation/anion graphite intercalation chemistry (GIC) processes, dual‐graphite batteries promise to be an energy storage device of high safety and low cost. However, few single electrolyte systems can simultaneously meet the requirements of both high oxidative stability during high voltage anion‐GIC on cathode and high reversibility upon cation‐GIC on anode. Thus, in order to rigidly remedy the irreversible capacity loss, excessive electrode materials need to be fabricated within full cell, resulting in an imbalance toward capacity‐dependent mass loading proportion between both electrodes. This work introduces a hybrid (dual‐organic) electrolytes design strategy into this promising technology. Segregated by a Nafion‐based separator, an ionic liquid electrolyte within the cathodic side can endure high operation potentials, while high Li‐GIC reversibility can be achieved in a superconcentrated ether‐based electrolyte on the anode side. On a mechanistic level, various cation‐GIC processes conducted in different electrolyte systems are clearly revealed and are summarized based on systematical characterizations. More importantly, after synergistically tuning the advantage and drawback of each electrolyte in this hybrid system, the dual‐graphite full cell assembled with capacity‐equivalent graphite‐based electrodes (1:1 mass loading) demonstrates superior long‐term cycling stability with ultrahigh capacity retention for over 3000 cycles.  相似文献

Intensive studies of an advanced energy material are reported and lithium polyacrylate (LiPAA) is proven to be a surprisingly unique, multifunctional binder for high‐voltage Li‐ion batteries. The absence of effective passivation at the interface of high‐voltage cathodes in Li‐ion batteries may negatively affect their electrochemical performance, due to detrimental phenomena such as electrolyte solution oxidation and dissolution of transition metal cations. A strategy is introduced to build a stable cathode–electrolyte solution interphase for LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) spinel high‐voltage cathodes during the electrode fabrication process by simply using LiPAA as the cathode binder. LiPAA is a superb binder due to unique adhesion, cohesion, and wetting properties. It forms a uniform thin passivating film on LNMO and conducting carbon particles in composite cathodes and also compensates Li‐ion loss in full Li‐ion batteries by acting as an extra Li source. It is shown that these positive roles of LiPAA lead to a significant improvement in the electrochemical performance (e.g., cycle life, cell impedance, and rate capability) of LNMO/graphite battery prototypes, compared with that obtained using traditional polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF) binder for LNMO cathodes. In addition, replacing PVdF with LiPAA binder for LNMO cathodes offers better adhesion, lower cost, and clear environmental advantages.  相似文献

Increasing the energy density of rechargeable batteries is of paramount importance toward achieving a sustainable society. The present limitation of the energy density is owing to the small capacity of cathode materials, in which the (de)intercalation of ions is charge‐compensated by transition‐metal redox reactions. Although additional oxygen‐redox reactions of oxide cathodes have been recognized as an effective way to overcome this capacity limit, irreversible structural changes that occur during charge/discharge cause voltage drops and cycle degradation. Here, a highly reversible oxygen‐redox capacity of Na2Mn3O7 that possesses inherent Mn vacancies in a layered structure is found. The cross validation of theoretical predictions and experimental observations demonstrates that the nonbonding 2p orbitals of oxygens neighboring the Mn vacancies contribute to the oxygen‐redox capacity without making the Mn?O bond labile, highlighting the critical role of transition‐metal vacancies for the design of reversible oxygen‐redox cathodes.  相似文献

The lithium‐ and manganese‐rich (LMR) layered structure cathodes exhibit one of the highest specific energies (≈900 W h kg?1) among all the cathode materials. However, the practical applications of LMR cathodes are still hindered by several significant challenges, including voltage fade, large initial capacity loss, poor rate capability and limited cycle life. Herein, we review the recent progress and in depth understandings on the application of LMR cathode materials from a practical point of view. Several key parameters of LMR cathodes that affect the LMR/graphite full‐cell operation are systematically analyzed. These factors include the first‐cycle capacity loss, voltage fade, powder tap density, and electrode density. New approaches to minimize the detrimental effects of these factors are highlighted in this work. We also provide perspectives for the future research on LMR cathode materials, focusing on addressing the fundamental problems of LMR cathodes while keeping practical considerations in mind.  相似文献

Nonaqueous redox flow batteries are emerging flow‐based energy storage technologies that have the potential for higher energy densities than their aqueous counterparts because of their wider voltage windows. However, their performance has lagged far behind their inherent capability due to one major limitation of low solubility of the redox species. Here, a molecular structure engineering strategy towards high performance nonaqueous electrolyte is reported with significantly increased solubility. Its performance outweighs that of the state‐of‐the‐art nonaqueous redox flow batteries. In particular, an ionic‐derivatized ferrocene compound is designed and synthesized that has more than 20 times increased solubility in the supporting electrolyte. The solvation chemistry of the modified ferrocene compound. Electrochemical cycling testing in a hybrid lithium–organic redox flow battery using the as‐synthesized ionic‐derivatized ferrocene as the catholyte active material demonstrates that the incorporation of the ionic‐charged pendant significantly improves the system energy density. When coupled with a lithium‐graphite hybrid anode, the hybrid flow battery exhibits a cell voltage of 3.49 V, energy density about 50 Wh L?1, and energy efficiency over 75%. These results reveal a generic design route towards high performance nonaqueous electrolyte by rational functionalization of the organic redox species with selective ligand.  相似文献

Achieving high‐performance Na‐ion capacitors (NICs) has the particular challenge of matching both capacity and kinetics between the anode and cathode. Here a high‐power NIC full device constructed from 2D metal–organic framework (MOFs) array is reported as the reactive template. The MOF array is converted to N‐doped mesoporous carbon nanosheets (mp‐CNSs), which are then uniformly encapsulated with VO2 and Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) nanoparticles as the electroactive materials. By this method, the high‐power performance of the battery materials is enabled to be enhanced significantly. It is discovered that such hybrid NVP@mp‐CNSs array can render ultrahigh rate capability (up to 200 C, equivalent to discharge within 18 s) and superior cycle performance, which outperforms all NVP‐based Na‐ion battery cathodes reported so far. A quasi‐solid‐state flexible NIC based on the NVP@mp‐CNSs cathode and the VO2@mp‐CNSs anode is further assembled. This hybrid NIC device delivers both high energy density and power density as well as a good cycle stability (78% retention after 2000 cycles at 1 A g?1). The results demonstrate the powerfulness of MOF arrays as the reactor for fabricating electrode materials.  相似文献
