Remains of jawed polychaetes were recovered from stomach contents of queen triggerfish ( Balistes vetula L.) collected by spearing from Came Bow Cay, Belize, Central America. Jaws in the nereidids, glycerids, and arabellids recovered are perfectly preserved, and might be passed by the fish without noticeable alteration. Jaws in the onuphids are fully articulated, but the outer wall-layer has been digested away, leaving only the inner aragonitic layer intact. A low fossilization potential for onuphid jaws is indicated, consistent with laboratory studies of jaw composition. Based on literature accounts, fish predation may have a considerable influence on polychaete jaw (scolecodont) assemblages in sediment.  相似文献

Micropaleontological studies of Tertiary shales and carbonates of the continental shelf of northeast Brazil have shown the existence of several levels rich in scolecodnts, even in areas in which other taxa are absent. A systematic analysis of the vertical distribution of these worm remains in relation to the Eocene/Oligocene stratigraphical subdivision based on pollen and spores, dinoflagellates, nannoplankton and foraminifera leads to the possibility of establishing a scolecodont zonation that can be traced into areas in which other microfossils are rarely preserved. This possibility, which may be a new stratigraphical tool in the exploration for petroleum in Brazil, is applied to the off-shore Maranhão basin.  相似文献

The Tidikelt region forms an outstanding area for subsurface Lower Devonian stratigraphy in the central Algerian Sahara. Sediments from five boreholes have revealed abundant and diverse assemblages of miospores, acritarchs, chitinozoa, scolecodont and microplant remains. The miospores are moderately well preserved. Three new miospore species (Dibolisporites saharansis nov. sp. Hassan Kermandji, Acinosporites conatus nov. sp. Hassan Kermandji and Scylaspora tidikeltense nov. sp. Hassan Kermandji) are described. Miospore assemblages vary through the regressive and transgressive sequences. Seven miospore assemblage biozones, including six new miospore assemblage biozones (Scylaspora tidikeltense-Perotrilites microbaculatus, Dictyotriletes emsiensis-Emphanisporites spinaeformis, Apiculiretusispora arenorugosa-Camptozonotriletes caperatus, Verrucosisporites polygonalis-Dictyotriletes subgranifer, Emphanisporites annulatus-Geminospora svalbardiae, Hystricosporites microancyreus-Grandispora protea, Calyptosporites velatus-Rhabdosporites langii) are proposed for the Lower and early Middle Devonian rocks of Tidikelt Plateau. The combined use of distinctive, wide distribution cosmopolitan and Gondwanan forms as biozonal and species characteristics permits accurate subdivision, dating and correlation of Tidikelt successions with other similar miospore zones of the Lower Devonian of Europe, Canada and other parts of Gondwana plate. The miospore data provide new explanations to stratigraphic relationships of regional rock units, sedimentary cycles and stratigraphic hiatus. The miospore biozones are proposed as a provincial biozonation, which may also be applied to other Palaeozoic rocks of similar miospore content.  相似文献

Folic acid oxidase from erythrocytes oxidatively cleaves folic acid at the C-9-N-10 bond to yield pterin-6-aldehyde and p-aminobenzoyl glutamic acid, with the concomitant generation of singlet oxygen. The emission from singlet oxygen is proportional to the enzyme activity. DABCO was used as a singlet oxygen emission enhancer to increase the sensitivity of the measurement. In general, pregnant women show high enzymatic activity, but the emission is strongly quenched by DABCO. This is contrary to normal and cancer cases in which an increase in the emission was observed. This effect is larger in cancer cases. These results are presented as a potential method for detecting physiological and pathological human conditions.  相似文献

Mycotoxin production from fungi isolated from grapes   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
AIMS: In order to assess the potential for producing mycotoxins, fungi were isolated from wine producing grapes. METHODS AND RESULTS: The isolates were identified and Penicillium expansum, the most well recognized mycotoxin producer, was analysed for mycotoxin production by TLC. Many of the strains produced patulin and/or citrinin, often depending on whether they were grown on a grape or yeast extract sucrose media. CONCLUSION: Citrinin was produced by all strains grown in the yeast extract sucrose medium, but only one strain (from 51) was able to produce this compound in grape juice medium. Patulin was produced in the yeast extract medium by 20 strains and in grape juice medium by 33 strains. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The presence of mycotoxins in wine producing grapes is discussed. Grapes contamination with patulin seems not to contribute to wine contamination, and no ochratoxin producing fungi was identified.  相似文献

An enzyme which oxidizes aminoacetone to methylglyoxal has been purified from the particulate fraction of goat liver. Polyamines, such as spermidine and spermine, are also good substrates for this enzyme. The pH optimum for aminoacetone oxidation was found to be 8.2. The apparent Km values of the enzyme for aminoacetone and spermidine were 0.009 and 0.095 mM, respectively. The subunit molecular weight of the enzyme was 93,000 as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The apparent molecular weight of the native enzyme was 186,000 by gel filtration. The enzyme is highly sensitive to carbonyl group reagents. The enzyme is not inhibited by monoamine and diamine oxidase inhibitors.  相似文献

When [5-3H]mevalonate is injected into mice, it is incorporated into macromolecules in the kidney. The incorporated material is stable to treatment with RNase or DNase but not protease, indicating that the radioactivity is associated with protein. Electrophoresis in sodium dodecyl sulfate-containing polyacrylamide gels indicates a molecular weight of about 25,000. The incorporated radioactivity can be released from the polypeptide and extracted into organic solvents after hydrolysis with acid or base or by treatment with protease. The conditions required for hydrolysis strongly suggest that the linkage between the protein and the mevalonate-derived material is an allylic ether. The chromatographic mobility of the incorporated material in several systems is similar to that of dolichol C95.  相似文献

The investigation of Eremanthus crotonoides afforded in addition to known compounds three new furanoheliangolides, while from E. glomerulatus six new furanoheliangolides and eremantholides were isolated. From the aerial parts of Chresta sphaerocephala a new guaianolide was obtained, while the roots contained known furanoheliangolides. The chemotaxonomy of the subtribe Lychnophorinae is discussed briefly.  相似文献

This article is concerned with understanding what is at stake in the everyday lives of family members facing Huntington's Disease (HD). The methodological and analytical point of departure is German critical psychology, particularly the category of conduct of everyday life (Holzkamp, 1995; Dreier, 1999). Specifically, I address questions of accessing and understanding the conduct of everyday life of persons facing HD who are not visibly active with respect to this circumstance. The question of access is not merely about getting in touch with persons who are not known to the research, professional and HD communities, but also about the consequences of establishing contact with persons who have not made an entry into any of these public areanas themselves. The question of understanding is about developing an analysis from a first-person perspective on the personal conduct of everyday life that is not visibly active. The development of such an understanding has broader implications, not just for further research and health care practices, but importantly also for the prevailing moral and ethical demands made on persons living at risk of hereditary diseases.  相似文献

The survey encompasses literature data on the polypeptide inhibitors of some reptiles serine proteinases and their separation from adder Viperidae and cobra Elapidae species. The evolutionary comparison of physico-chemical and biological properties of them are also given and discussed within this work. Considerable homology (about 50%) in amino acid composition of adder, bee, mammal and others of different phylogenetic origin is being emphasized and high homology in structure of their functionally important inhibitors sites is observed. In the most cases the investigated peptide inhibitors of adder and cobra were observed to have an extremely high antitryptic activity with Ki ranging from 7.6 x 10(-10) M to 3.5 x 10(-12) M. The majority of polypeptide inhibitors are suggested by Laskowsky et al to interact with the proteinases in a standard way. The biological reactivity of the above preparations is a result of arginine and lysine presence in the substrate-binding sites of P2' and P3' or P4' centres.  相似文献

Profilin plays a major role in the assembly of actin filament at the barbed ends. The thermodynamic and kinetic parameters for barbed end assembly from profilin-actin have been measured turbidimetrically. Filament growth from profilin-actin requires MgATP to be bound to actin. No assembly is observed from profilin-CaATP-actin. The rate constant for association of profilin-actin to barbed ends is 30% lower than that of actin, and the critical concentration for F-actin assembly from profilin-actin units is 0.3 microM under physiological ionic conditions. Barbed ends grow from profilin-actin with an ADP-Pi cap. Profilin does not cap the barbed ends and is not detectably incorporated into filaments. The EDC-cross-linked profilin-actin complex (PAcov) both copolymerizes with F-actin and undergoes spontaneous self-assembly, following a nucleation-growth process characterized by a critical concentration of 0.2 microM under physiological conditions. The PAcov polymer is a helical filament that displays the same diffraction pattern as F-actin, with layer lines at 6 and 36 nm. The PAcov filaments bound phalloidin with the same kinetics as F-actin, bound myosin subfragment-1, and supported actin-activated ATPase of myosin subfragment-1, but they did not translocate in vitro along myosin-coated glass surfaces. These results are discussed in light of the current models of actin structure.  相似文献

Cheilostomatous Bryozoa from Vanuatu   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The present account of some Bryozoa from Vanuatu is the first study of reef-flat species from the eastern Coral Sea. Based on samples collected from several shallow water localities on the island of Efate, a total of 92 species is described, including a new family, three new genera and 20 new species. Some of the newly recognized species are the result of taxonomic revision stimulated by these new samples, while others are entirely new to science. Of the new taxa described here, 16 are presently known only from Vanuatu. The total number of species recorded does not accurately represent the true taxonomic diversity of the Cheilostomatida of Vanuatu, and further sampling, at other localities and in other habitats, is needed before it can be reasonably estimated. The fauna is predominantly Indo-West Pacific in character with a high proportion of species apparently known only in the Southwest Pacific.  相似文献

The general features are known for the pathway by which most methane is produced in nature. All acetate-utilizing methanogenic microorganisms contain CODH which catalyzes the cleavage of acetyl-CoA; however, the pathway differs from all other acetate-utilizing anaerobes in that the methyl group is reduced to methane with electrons derived from oxidation of the carbonyl group of acetyl-CoA to CO2. The current understanding of the methanogenic fermentation of acetate provides impressions of nature's novel solutions to problems of methyl transfer, electron transport, and energy conservation. The pathway is now at a level of understanding that will permit productive investigations of these and other interesting questions in the near future.  相似文献

The trans-Golgi network is a major sorting platform of the secretory pathway from which proteins and lipids, both newly synthesized and retrieved from endocytic compartments, are targeted to different destinations. These sorting processes occur during the formation of pleomorphic tubular-vesicular carriers. The past years have provided insights into basic mechanisms coordinating the spatial and temporal organization of machineries necessary for the segregation of membrane components into distinct microdomains, for the bending, elongation, and fission of corresponding membranes, thus revealing a complex interplay of protein-protein and protein-lipid interactions.  相似文献

The agouti protein regulates pigmentation in the mouse hair follicle producing a black hair with a subapical yellow band. Its effect on pigmentation is achieved by antagonizing the binding of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) to melanocortin 1 receptor (Mc1r), switching melanin synthesis from eumelanin (black/brown) to phaeomelanin (red/yellow). Dominant mutations in the non-coding region of mouse agouti cause yellow coat colour and ectopic expression also results in obesity, type 11 diabetes, increased somatic growth and tumourigenesis. At least some of these pleiotropic effects can be explained by antagonism of other members of the melanocortin receptor family by agouti protein. The yellow coat colour is the result of agouti chronically antagonizing the binding of alpha-MSH to Mc1r and the obese phenotype results from agouti protein antagonizing the binding of alpha-MSH to Mc3r and/or Mc4r. Despite the existence of a highly homologous agouti protein in humans, agouti signal protein (ASIP), its role has yet to be defined. However it is known that human ASIP is expressed at highest levels in adipose tissue where it may antagonize one of the melanocortin receptors. The conserved nature of the agouti protein combined with the diverse phenotypic effects of agouti mutations in mouse and the different expression patterns of human and mouse agouti, suggest ASIP may play a role in human energy homeostasis and possibly human pigmentation.  相似文献

The ability of cells to perceive changes in the composition and mechanical properties of their cell wall is crucial for plants to achieve coordinated growth and development. Evidence is accumulating to show that the plant cell wall, like its yeast counterpart, is capable of triggering multiple signalling pathways. The components of the cell wall that are responsible for initiating these signal responses remain unknown; however, recent technological advances in cell wall analysis may now facilitate the identification of these components and accelerate the characterisation of changes that occur in cell wall mutants.  相似文献

A peptide from insects protects transgenic tobacco from a parasitic weed   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Parasitic plants present some of the most intractable weed problems for agriculture in much of the world. Species of root parasites such as Orobanche can cause enormous yield losses, yet few control measures are effective and affordable. An ideal solution to this problem is the development of parasite-resistant crops, but this goal has been elusive for most susceptible crops. Here we report a mechanism for resistance to the parasitic angiosperm Orobanche based on expression of sarcotoxin IA in transgenic tobacco. Sarcotoxin IA is a 40-residue peptide with antibiotic activity, originally isolated from the fly, Sarcophaga peregrina. The sarcotoxin IA gene was fused to an Orobanche-inducible promoter, HMG2, which is induced locally in the host root at the point of contact with the parasite, and used to transform tobacco. The resulting transgenic plants accumulated more biomass than non-transformed plants in the presence of parasites. Furthermore, plants expressing sarcotoxin IA showed enhanced resistance to O. aegyptiaca as evidenced by abnormal parasite development and higher parasite mortality after attachment as compared to non-transformed plants. The transgenic plants were similar in appearance to non-transformed plants suggesting that sarcotoxin IA is not detrimental to the host.  相似文献

Circadian rhythms from multiple oscillators: lessons from diverse organisms   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The organization of biological activities into daily cycles is universal in organisms as diverse as cyanobacteria, fungi, algae, plants, flies, birds and man. Comparisons of circadian clocks in unicellular and multicellular organisms using molecular genetics and genomics have provided new insights into the mechanisms and complexity of clock systems. Whereas unicellular organisms require stand-alone clocks that can generate 24-hour rhythms for diverse processes, organisms with differentiated tissues can partition clock function to generate and coordinate different rhythms. In both cases, the temporal coordination of a multi-oscillator system is essential for producing robust circadian rhythms of gene expression and biological activity.  相似文献
