Ongoing interest is focused on aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) for mass‐production energy storage systems as a result of their affordability, safety, and high energy density. Ensuring the stability of the electrode/electrolyte interface is of particular importance for prolonging the cycling ability to meet the practical requirements of rechargeable batteries. Zinc anodes exhibit poor cycle life and low coulombic efficiency, stemming from the severe dendrite growth, and irreversible byproducts such as H2 and inactive ZnO. Great efforts have recently been devoted to zinc anode protection for designing high‐performance ZIBs. However, the intrinsic origins of zinc plating/striping are poorly understood, which greatly delay its potential applications. Rather than focusing on battery metrics, this review delves deeply into the underlying science that triggers the deposition/dissolution of zinc ions. Furthermore, recent advances in modulating the zinc coordination environment, uniforming interfacial electric fields, and inducing zinc deposition are highlighted and summarized. Finally, perspectives and suggestions are provided for designing highly stable zinc anodes for the industrialization of the aqueous rechargeable ZIBs in the near future.  相似文献

The migration of zinc‐ion batteries from alkaline electrolyte to neutral or mild acidic electrolyte promotes research into their flexible applications. However, discharge voltage of many reported zinc‐ion batteries is far from satisfactory. On one hand, the battery voltage is substantially restricted by the narrow voltage window of aqueous electrolytes. On the other hand, many batteries yield a low‐voltage discharge plateau or show no plateau but capacitor‐like sloping discharge profiles. This impacts the battery's practicability for flexible electronics where stable and consistent high energy is needed. Herein, an aqueous zinc hybrid battery based on a highly concentrated dual‐ion electrolyte and a hierarchically structured lithium‐ion‐intercalative LiVPO4F cathode is developed. This hybrid battery delivers a flat and high‐voltage discharge plateau of nearly 1.9 V, ranking among the highest reported values for all aqueous zinc‐based batteries. The resultant high energy density of 235.6 Wh kg?1 at a power density of 320.8 W kg?1 also outperforms most reported zinc‐based batteries. A designed solid‐state and long‐lasting hydrogel electrolyte is subsequently applied in the fabrication of a flexible battery, which can be integrated into various flexible devices as powerful energy supply. The idea of designing such a hybrid battery offers a new strategy for developing high‐voltage and high‐energy aqueous energy storage systems.  相似文献

Sodium‐ion batteries are considered as a promising technology for large‐scale energy storage applications, owing to their low cost. However, there are many challenges for developing sodium‐ion batteries with high capacity, long cycle life, and high‐rate capability. Herein, the development of high‐performance sodium‐ion batteries using ZnS nanospheres as anode material and an ether‐based electrolyte, which exhibit improved electrochemical performance over the pure alkyl carbonate electrolytes, is reported. ZnS nanospheres deliver a high specific capacity of 1000 mA h g?1 and high initial Columbic efficiency of 90%. Electrochemical testing and first‐principle calculations demonstrate that the ether‐based solvent can facilitate charge transport, reduce the energy barrier for sodium‐ion diffusion, and thus enhance electrochemical performances. Ex situ measurements (X‐ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping) reveal that ZnS nanospheres maintain structural integrity during the charge and discharge processes over 100 cycles. As anode material for sodium‐ion batteries, ZnS nanospheres deliver high reversible sodium storage capacity, high Coulombic efficiencies, and extended cycle life.  相似文献

Solid state electrolytes are the key components for high energy density lithium ion batteries and especially for lithium metal batteries where lithium dendrite growth is an inevitable obstacle in liquid electrolytes. Solid polymer electrolytes based on a complex of polymers and lithium salts are intrinsically advantageous over inorganic electrolytes in terms of processability and film‐forming properties. But other properties such as ionic conductivity, thermal stability, mechanical modulus, and electrochemical stability need to be improved. Herein, for the first time, 2D additives using few‐layer vermiculite clay sheets as an example to comprehensively upgrade poly(ethylene oxide)‐based solid polymer electrolyte are introduced. With clay sheet additives, the polymer electrolyte exhibits improved thermal stability, mechanical modulus, ionic conductivity, and electrochemical stability along with reduced flammability and interface resistance. The composite polymer electrolyte can suppress the formation and growth of lithium dendrites in lithium metal batteries. It is anticipated that the clay sheets upgraded solid polymer electrolyte can be integrated to construct high performance solid state lithium ion and lithium metal batteries with higher energy and safety.  相似文献

Nonaqueous Li–air and Li–S batteries are attracting considerable interest because of their outstanding theoretical capacities and energy densities. However, despite the substantial progress in their development, safety remains an issue because of the flammability of their organic electrolytes. Moreover, the electrolyte volatilization of Li–air batteries and “shuttle effect” in Li–S batteries seriously hinder their development. The use of solid‐state Li–air and Li–S batteries is one of the best solutions. Nevertheless, many challenges remain in solid electrolytes, electrodes, and interfaces. In this review, a comprehensive discussion on the development of solid‐state Li–air and Li–S batteries is provided. The discussion begins with introduction of the progress in solid electrolytes, including their ionic conductivities and chemical stabilities. It then moves on to the cathodes of both batteries and the interface between electrolytes and electrodes. The reaction process inside the cathode is also presented. Suggestions for the optimization of composite cathodes and modification of the electrode–electrolyte interface are provided in the end. Intensive effort is required for the development of solid‐state Li–air and Li–S batteries in the future.  相似文献

Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) have the potential to be practically applied in large‐scale energy storage markets. The rapid progress of SIBs research is primarily focused on electrodes, while electrolytes attract less attention. Indeed, the improvement of electrode performance is arguably correlated with the electrolyte optimization. In conventional lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), ether‐based electrolytes are historically less practical owing to the insufficient passivation of both anodes and cathodes. As an important class of aprotic electrolytes, ethers have revived with the emerging lithium‐sulfur and lithium‐oxygen batteries in recent years, and are even booming in the wave of SIBs. Ether‐based electrolytes are unique to enabling these new battery chemistries in terms of producing stable ternary graphite intercalation compounds, modifying anode solid electrolyte interphases, reducing the solubility of intermediates, and decreasing polarization. Better still, ether‐based electrolytes are compatible with specific inorganic cathodes and could catalyze the assembly of full SIBs prototypes. This Research News article aims to summarize the recent critical reports on ether‐based electrolytes in sodium‐based batteries, to unveil the uniqueness of ether‐based electrolytes to advancing diverse electrode materials, and to shed light on the viability and challenges of ether‐based electrolytes in future sodium‐based battery chemistries.  相似文献

Lithium‐air (Li‐air) batteries have become attractive because of their extremely high theoretical energy density. However, conventional Li‐air cells operating with non‐aqueous electrolytes suffer from poor cycle life and low practical energy density due to the clogging of the porous air cathode by insoluble discharge products, contamination of the organic electrolyte and lithium metal anode by moist air, and decomposition of the electrolyte during cycling. These difficulties may be overcome by adopting a cell configuration that consists of a lithium‐metal anode protected from air by a Li+‐ion solid electrolyte and an air electrode in an aqueous catholyte. In this type of configuration, a Li+‐ion conducting “buffer” layer between the lithium‐metal anode and the solid electrolyte is often necessary due to the instability of many solid electrolytes in contact with lithium metal. Based on the type of buffer layer, two different battery configurations are possible: “hybrid” Li‐air batteries and “aqueous” Li‐air batteries. The hybrid and aqueous Li‐air batteries utilize the same battery chemistry and face similar challenges that limit the cell performance. Here, an overview of recent developments in hybrid and aqueous Li‐air batteries is provided and the factors that influence their performance and impede their practical applications, followed by future directions are discussed.  相似文献

Rechargeable aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs) have been emerging as potential large‐scale energy storage devices due to their high energy density, low cost, high safety, and environmental friendliness. However, the commonly used cathode materials in ZIBs exhibit poor electrochemical performance, such as significant capacity fading during long‐term cycling and poor performance at high current rates, which significantly hinder the further development of ZIBs. Herein, a new and highly reversible Mn‐based cathode material with porous framework and N‐doping (MnOx@N‐C) is prepared through a metal–organic framework template strategy. Benefiting from the unique porous structure, conductive carbon network, and the synergetic effect of Zn2+ and Mn2+ in electrolyte, the MnOx@N‐C shows excellent cycling stability, good rate performance, and high reversibility for aqueous ZIBs. Specifically, it exhibits high capacity of 305 mAh g?1 after 600 cycles at 500 mA g?1 and maintains achievable capacity of 100 mAh g?1 at a quite high rate of 2000 mA g?1 with long‐term cycling of up to 1600 cycles, which are superior to most reported ZIB cathode materials. Furthermore, insight into the Zn‐storage mechanism in MnOx@N‐C is systematically studied and discussed via multiple analytical methods. This study opens new opportunities for designing low‐cost and high‐performance rechargeable aqueous ZIBs.  相似文献

The rechargeable Li–O2 battery has attracted much attention over the past decades owing to its overwhelming advantage in theoretical specific energy density compared to state‐of‐the‐art Li‐ion batteries. Practical application requires non‐aqueous Li–O2 batteries to stably obtain high reversible capacity, which highly depends on a suitable electrolyte system. Up to now, some critical challenges remain in developing desirable non‐aqueous electrolytes for Li–O2 batteries. Herein, we will review the current status and challenges in non‐aqueous liquid electrolytes, ionic liquid electrolytes and solid‐state electrolytes of Li–O2 batteries, as well as the perspectives on these issues and future development.  相似文献

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries continue to be considered promising post‐lithium‐ion batteries owing to their high theoretical energy density. In pursuit of a Li–S cell with long‐term cyclability, most studies thus far have relied on using ether‐based electrolytes. However, their limited ability to dissolve polysulfides requires a high electrolyte‐to‐sulfur ratio, which impairs the achievable specific energy. Recently, the battery community found high donor electrolytes to be a potential solution to this shortcoming because their high solubility toward polysulfides enables a cell to operate under lean electrolyte conditions. Despite the increasing number of promising outcomes with high donor electrolytes, a critical hurdle related to stability of the lithium‐metal counter electrode needs to be overcome. This review provides an overview of recent efforts pertaining to high donor electrolytes in Li–S batteries and is intended to raise interest from within the community. Furthermore, based on analogous efforts in the lithium‐air battery field, strategies for protecting the lithium metal electrode are proposed. It is predicted that high donor electrolytes will be elevated to a higher status in the field of Li–S batteries, with the hope that either existing or upcoming strategies will, to a fair extent, mitigate the degradation of the lithium–metal interface.  相似文献

Secondary batteries based on metal anodes (e.g., Li, Na, Mg, Zn, and Al) are among the most sought‐after candidates for next‐generation mobile and stationary storage systems because they are able to store a larger amount of energy per unit mass or volume. However, unstable electrodeposition and uncontrolled interfacial reactions occuring in liquid electrolytes cause unsatisfying cell performance and potential safety concerns for the commercial application of these metal anodes. Solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) having a higher modulus are considered capable of inhibiting difficulties associated with the anodes and may enable building of safe all‐solid‐state metal batteries, yet several challenges, such as insufficient room‐temperature ionic conductivity and poor interfacial stability between the electrode and the electrolyte, hinder the large‐scale development of such batteries. Here, research and development of SSEs including inorganic ceramics, organic solid polymers, and organic–inorganic hybrid/composite materials for metal‐based batteries are reviewed. The comparison of different types of electrolytes is discussed in detail, in the context of electrochemical energy storage applications. Then, the focus of this study is on recent advances in a range of attractive and innovative battery chemistries and technologies that are enabled by SSEs. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives are outlined to foresee the development of SSEs.  相似文献

Lithium–sulfur batteries are attractive for automobile and grid applications due to their high theoretical energy density and the abundance of sulfur. Despite the significant progress in cathode development, lithium metal degradation and the polysulfide shuttle remain two critical challenges in the practical application of Li–S batteries. Development of advanced electrolytes has become a promising strategy to simultaneously suppress lithium dendrite formation and prevent polysulfide dissolution. Here, a new class of concentrated siloxane‐based electrolytes, demonstrating significantly improved performance over the widely investigated ether‐based electrolytes are reported in terms of stabilizing the sulfur cathode and Li metal anode as well as minimizing flammability. Through a combination of experimental and computational investigation, it is found that siloxane solvents can effectively regulate a hidden solvation‐ion‐exchange process in the concentrated electrolytes that results from the interactions between cations/anions (e.g., Li+, TFSI?, and S2?) and solvents. As a result, it could invoke a quasi‐solid‐solid lithiation and enable reversible Li plating/stripping and robust solid‐electrolyte interphase chemistries. The solvation‐ion‐exchange process in the concentrated electrolytes is a key factor in understanding and designing electrolytes for other high‐energy lithium metal batteries.  相似文献

Rechargeable aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs) are appealing due to their high safety, zinc abundance, and low cost. However, developing suitable cathode materials remains a great challenge. Herein, a novel 2D heterostructure of ultrathin amorphous vanadium pentoxide uniformly grown on graphene (A‐V2O5/G) with a very short ion diffusion pathway, abundant active sites, high electrical conductivity, and exceptional structural stability, is demonstrated for highly reversible aqueous ZIBs (A‐V2O5/G‐ZIBs), coupling with unprecedented high capacity, rate capability, long‐term cyclability, and excellent safety. As a result, 2D A‐V2O5/G heterostructures for stacked ZIBs at 0.1 A g?1 display an ultrahigh capacity of 489 mAh g?1, outperforming all reported ZIBs, with an admirable rate capability of 123 mAh g?1 even at 70 A g?1. Furthermore, the new‐concept prototype planar miniaturized zinc‐ion microbatteries (A‐V2O5/G‐ZIMBs), demonstrate a high volumetric capacity of 20 mAh cm?3 at 1 mA cm?2, long cyclability; holding high capacity retention of 80% after 3500 cycles, and in‐series integration, demonstrative of great potential for highly‐safe microsized power sources. Therefore, the exploration of such 2D heterostructure materials with strong synergy is a reliable strategy for developing safe and high‐performance energy storage devices.  相似文献

The use of solid electrolytes is a promising direction to improve the energy density of lithium‐ion batteries. However, the low ionic conductivity of many solid electrolytes currently hinders the performance of solid‐state batteries. Sulfide solid electrolytes can be processed in a number of forms (glass, glass‐ceramic, and crystalline) and have a wide range of available chemistries. Crystalline sulfide materials demonstrate ionic conductivity on par with those of liquid electrolytes through the utilization of near ideal conduction pathways. Low‐temperature processing is also possible for these materials due to their favorable mechanical properties. The main drawback of sulfide solid electrolytes remains their electrochemical stability, but this can be addressed through compositional tuning or the use of artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Implementation of sulfide solid electrolytes, with proper treatment for stability, can lead to substantial improvements in solid‐state battery performance leading to significant advancement in electric vehicle technology.  相似文献

This study presents a battery concept with a “mediator‐ion” solid electrolyte for the development of next‐generation electrochemical energy storage technologies. The active anode and cathode materials in a single cell can be in the solid, liquid, or gaseous form, which are separated by a sodium‐ion solid‐electrolyte separator. The uniqueness of this mediator‐ion strategy is that the redox reactions at the anode and the cathode are sustained by a shuttling of a mediator sodium ion between the anolyte and the catholyte through the solid‐state electrolyte. Use of the solid‐electrolyte separator circumvents the chemical‐crossover problem between the anode and the cathode, overcomes the dendrite‐problem when employing metal‐anodes, and offers the possibility of using different liquid electrolytes at the anode and the cathode in a single cell. The battery concept is demonstrated with two low‐cost metal anodes (zinc and iron), two liquid cathodes (bromine and potassium ferricyanide), and one gaseous cathode (air/O2) with a sodium‐ion solid electrolyte. This novel battery strategy with a mediator‐ion solid electrolyte is applicable to a wide range of electrochemical energy storage systems with a variety of cathodes, anodes, and mediator‐ion solid electrolytes.  相似文献

Stretchable devices need elastic hydrogel electrolyte as an essential component, while most hydrogels will lose their stretchability after being incorporated with strong alkaline solution. This is why highly stretchable zinc–air batteries have never been reported so far. Herein, super‐stretchable, flat‐ (800% stretchable) and fiber‐shaped (500% stretchable) zinc–air batteries are first developed by designing an alkaline‐tolerant dual‐network hydrogel electrolyte. In the dual‐network hydrogel electrolyte, sodium polyacrylate (PANa) chains contribute to the formation of soft domains and the carboxyl groups neutralized by hydroxyls as well as cellulose as potassium hydroxide stabilizer are responsible for vastly enhanced alkaline tolerance. The obtained super‐stretchable, flat zinc–air battery exhibits a high power density of 108.6 mW?cm?2, increasing to 210.5 mW?cm?2 upon being 800% stretched. Similar phenomena are observed for the 500% stretchable fiber‐shaped batteries. The devices can maintain stable power output even after being heavily deformed benefiting from the highly soft, alkaline‐tolerant hydrogel electrolyte developed. A bendable battery‐display system and water proof weavable fiber zinc–air battery are also demonstrated. This work will facilitate the progress of using zinc–air battery powering flexible electronics and smart clothes. Moreover, the developed alkaline‐tolerant super‐stretchable electrolyte can also be applied for many other alkaline electrolyte‐based energy storage/conversion devices.  相似文献

With the booming development of flexible and wearable electronics, their safety issues and operation stabilities have attracted worldwide attentions. Compared with traditional liquid electrolytes, gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) are preferred due to their higher safety and adaptability to the design of flexible energy storage devices. This review summarizes the recent progress of GPEs with enhanced physicochemical properties and specified functionalities for the application in electrochemical energy storage. Functional GPEs that are capable to achieve unity lithium‐ion transference number and offer additional pseudocapacitance to the overall capacitance are carefully discussed. The smart GPEs with self‐protection, thermotolerant, and self‐healing abilities are particularly highlighted. To close, the future directions and remaining challenges of the GPEs for application in electrochemical energy storages are summarized to provide clues for the following development.  相似文献

Owing to the ever‐increasing safety concerns about conventional lithium‐ion batteries, whose applications have expanded to include electric vehicles and grid‐scale energy storage, batteries with solidified electrolytes that utilize nonflammable inorganic materials are attracting considerable attention. In particular, owing to their superionic conductivities (as high as ≈10?2 S cm?1) and deformability, sulfide materials as the solid electrolytes (SEs) are considered the enabling material for high‐energy bulk‐type all‐solid‐state batteries. Herein the authors provide a brief review on recent progress in sulfide Li‐ and Na‐ion SEs for all‐solid‐state batteries. After the basic principles in designing SEs are considered, the experimental exploration of multicomponent systems and ab initio calculations that accelerate the search for stronger candidates are discussed. Next, other issues and challenges that are critical for practical applications, such as instability in air, electrochemical stability, and compatibility with active materials, are discussed. Then, an emerging progress in liquid‐phase synthesis and solution process of SEs and its relevant prospects in ensuring intimate ionic contacts and fabricating sheet‐type electrodes is highlighted. Finally, an outlook on the future research directions for all‐solid‐state batteries employing sulfide superionic conductors is provided.  相似文献

Solid‐state electrolytes are a promising candidate for the next‐generation lithium‐ion battery, as they have the advantages of eliminating the leakage hazard of liquid solvent and elevating stability. However, inherent limitations such as the low ionic conductivity of solid polymer electrolytes and the high brittleness of inorganic ceramic electrolytes severally impede their practical application. Here, an inexpensive, facile, and scalable strategy to fabricate a hybrid Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) and poly(ethylene oxide)‐based electrolyte by exploiting bacterial cellulose as a template is reported. The well‐organized LLZO network significantly enhances the ionic conductivity by extending long transport pathways for Li ions, exhibiting an elevated conductivity of 1.12 × 10?4 S cm?1. In addition, the hybrid electrolyte presents a structural flexibility, with minor impedance increase after bending. The facile and applicable approach establishes new principles for the strategy of designing scalable and flexible hybrid polymer electrolytes that can be utilized for high‐energy‐density batteries.  相似文献
