Seedlings of Stylosanthes guianensis var. guianensis cv. Cookand S. guianensis var. pauciflora cv. Bandeirante were defoliatedand placed in a naturally lit glasshouse at 23/18 °C, 28/23°C or 33/28 °C (day/night). After exposure to 14 h daysand after floral induction with 30 cycles of 11 h, plants wereallocated to 11, 12, 13 or 14 h during flowering and seed formation. Floral initiation occurred after 10–15 short-day cycles.Flower appearance was hastened by warm temperatures and spikenumber per plant at 20 d after flower appearance was negativelyrelated to temperature and greater in Cook than in Bandeirante.Exposure to 13- and 14-h days reduced the continued differentiationof inflorescences in Bandeirante, and in Cook in warm temperatures.Floret number per spike was greatest at 23/18 °C and a higherproportion of florets aborted in Bandeirante at 33/ 28 °C.Variations in seed setting of the bi-articulate loment of Bandeiranteare described. Highest potential seed yield occurred if afterfloral induction 11 or 12 h days were maintained with 23/18°C or 28/23 °C temperatures. The effect of heat stress on processes related to carbohydratepartitioning was investigated in young bell pepper (Capsicumannum L. cv. Maor) plants in relation to abscission of theirreproductive organs at different stages of development. None of the reproductive organs abscised after 5 d in a normalday/night temperature regime (25/18 °C). With a temperatureregime of 35 °C day, 25 °C night, abscission occurredin only a small portion of the flower buds and none of the flowersand fruitlets. However, when temperatures in the day and nightwere reversed (25/35 °C, day/night) all the buds and someof the flowers abscised during that time period. The young fruitat the first node did not abscise under any temperature regime. The abscission rate of the flower buds was reduced under heatstress if the developing fruit at the first node had been removed. High temperature during either the light or dark periods reducedthe export of [14C]sucrose from the source leaf (fed for 48h with [14C]sucrose). Both heat stress and fruit presence reduced the relative amountof [14C]sucrose which was exported to the flower buds, flowersand roots. Likewise, these treatments reduced the concentrationof reducing sugars in the reproductive organs. Concomitantly, the heat stress and fruit presence on the first node reducedthe activity of soluble acid invertase in the flower buds andthe roots, but not in young leaves. Overall, the results show that heat stress causes alternationin sucrose distribution in the plant, but may also have specificeffects on metabolic activities related to sucrose import andutilization in flower buds and flowers which in turn may enhancetheir abscission. The imperial bromeliad Alcantarea imperialis grows naturally on rocky outcrops (‘inselbergs’) in regions where daily temperatures vary from 5 to 40°C. As carbohydrate metabolism is altered in response to cold, it could lead to reprogramming of the metabolic machinery including the increase in levels of metabolites that function as osmolytes, compatible solutes, or energy sources in order to maintain plant homeostasis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different temperatures on plant growth and non-structural carbohydrates in plants of A. imperialis adapted to low temperature. Seedlings of A. imperialis were grown in vitro under a 12-h photoperiod with four different day/night temperature cycles: 5/5°C, 15/15°C, 15/30°C (dark/light) and 30/30°C. Plants were also cultivated at 26°C in ex vitro conditions for comparison. The results showed an inverse relationship between temperature and germination time and no differences in the percentage of germination. Plants maintained for 9 months at 15°C presented a reduced number of leaves and roots, and a dry mass four times lower than plants grown at 30°C. Sugar content was higher in plants grown at 15°C than at 30°C. However, the highest amount of total sugar was found in plants growing under warm day/cold night conditions. Myo-inositol, glucose, fructose and sucrose were found predominantly under high temperatures, while under low temperatures, sucrose was apparently replaced by trehalose, raffinose and stachyose. Starch content was highest in plants grown under high temperatures. The lowest starch content was detected under low temperatures, suggesting its conversion into soluble carbohydrates to protect the plants against cold. These results indicated that low temperature retarded growth of A. imperialis and increased sugar levels, mainly trehalose, thus suggesting that these sugar compounds could be involved in cold tolerance.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on production and abscission of flowerbuds, flowers and pods was studied in a determinate snap-beancultivar (cv. Tenderette). Under moderate temperature (e.g.27/17 °C) the onset of pod development was associated withcessation of flower bud production and with enhanced abscissionof flower buds. Raising night temperature from 17 °C to27 °C strongly reduced pod production, mature pod size andseeds per pod, while an increase in day temperature from 22°C to 32 °C had smaller and less consistent effects.Pod production under high night temperature was not constrainedby flower production since 27 °C at night promoted branchingand flower bud appearance. Under 32/27 °C day/night temperaturethe large reduction in pod set was due to enhanced abscissionof flower buds, flowers and young pods (< 3 cm). Flowershad the highest relative abscission followed by young pods andflower buds. Therefore, the onset of anthesis and of pod developmentwere the plant stages most sensitive to night temperature. Podslarger than 3 cm did not abscise but usually aborted and shrivelledunder high night temperature. The effects of 32/27 °C werenot due to transient water stresses and were observed even undercontinuous irrigation and mist-spraying. The effect of germination temperature, duration of high-intensitylight, and day temperature in modifying the influence of nighttemperature on the flowering process of the M-8 strain of Uplandcotton was examined. In general, night temperatures above 28°C caused the first floral branch to be formed at a higher node. The magnitude of the reaction was conditioned by the other environmentalfactors studied. Germination temperature had a slight but significanteffect on subsequent floral responses to night temperature.Plants given eight-hour periods of high-intensity light eachday were delayed more by high night temperature than those exposedto 14 or 24 hours of high light. At high day temperatures (28–32°C) the inhibiting influence of the high night temperature wasgreatly increased. High day temperatures delayed floral initiationif the night temperature was high (28–32°C) but causeda lowering of position of first floral branch when the nighttemperature was low (20–22°C). The enhancement offlowering by 32°C days and 22°C nights was expressednot only in the low node of first floral branch, but also inthe shorter time from planting to floral initiation.  相似文献

Seedlings with four true leaves of cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L.), Guonong No.25 (a cold-tolerant cultivar) and Guonong No.41 (a cold sensitive cultivar), were grown under normal or low temperature conditions: 25°C/18°C or 15°C/8°C (day/night). The seedlings of Guonong No.25 under low temperature were also treated with or without exogenous ABA. The purpose of our study was to find out the effects of low temperature and exogenous ABA application on the carbohydrate metabolism in the cucumber plants. Time course changes of carbohydrate contents and activities of stachyose synthase and alkaline α-galactosidase in the seedling leaves were investigated after the treatment. Our results show that compared to the seedlings under temperatures of 25°C/18°C, the seedlings of the both tested genotypes under 15°C/8°C (day/night) have significantly higher contents of all measured soluble carbohydrates. Significant difference in stachyose synthase activity is observed between the two genotypes under normal temperature or low temperature. Under normal temperature, leaf stachyose synthase activity in Guonong No.41 is higher than that in Guonong No.25. The stachyose synthase activity of Guonong No.41 decreases sharply under low temperature, but that of Guonong No.25 increases 3 days after treatment and then decreases to the original level. In contrast, there is no significant genotypic difference in alkaline α-galactosidase activity. Additionally, compared to the control seedlings treated with 0 μM ABA, the seedlings treated with 50 and 150 μM ABA accumulate substantial amounts of all tested soluble carbohydrates except galactose whereas 250 μM ABA treated seedlings show decreased levels of all these soluble carbohydrates. Stachyose synthase activity increases significantly upon 50 and 150 μM ABA treatments. Fan-zhen Menga, Li-ping Hu, and Shao-hui Wang contributed equally to the paper.  相似文献

Floral initiation in seedlings of Stylosanthes guianensis var.guianensis cv. Schofield grown at a photoperiod marginal forflowering (12–11.75 h) was promoted by a combination oflow day (25 °C) and low night (16 or 21 °C) temperatures, and completely inhibited by a 35 °C day temperature. Additionally, earliness of floral initiation under naturally decreasing daylengthwas negatively related to temperature regime over the range35/30 to 20/15 °C (day/night). Photoperiod is a major factor in flower development of the opiumpoppy (Papaver somniferum L. ‘album DC’) which isa long-day plant. Predicting time to flower in field-grown opiumpoppy requires knowledge of which stages of growth are sensitiveto photoperiod and how the rate of flower development is influencedby photoperiod. The objective of this work was to determinewhen poppy plants first become sensitive to photoperiod andhow long photoperiod continues to influence the time to firstflower under consistent temperature conditions. Plants weregrown in artificially-lit growth chambers with either a 16-hphotoperiod (highly flower inductive) or a 9-h photoperiod (non-inductive).Plants were transferred at 1 to 3-d intervals from a 16- toa 9-h photoperiod andvice versa . All chambers were maintainedat a 12-h thermoperiod of 25/20 °C. Poppy plants becamesensitive to photoperiod 4 d after emergence and required aminimum of four inductive cycles (short dark periods) beforethe plant flowered. Additional inductive cycles, up to a maximumof nine, hastened flowering. After 13 inductive cycles, floweringtime was no longer influenced by photoperiod. These resultsindicate that the interval between emergence and first flowercan be divided into four phases: (1) a photoperiod-insensitivejuvenile phase (JP); (2) a photoperiod-sensitive inductive phase(PSP); (3) a photoperiod-sensitive post-inductive phase (PSPP);and (4) a photoperiod-insensitive post-inductive phase (PIPP).The minimum durations of these phases forPapaver somniferum‘album DC’ under the conditions of our experimentwere determined as 4 d, 4 d, 9 d, and 14 d, respectively. Seed germination in Amaranthtis retroflexus, a facultative shortday plant, was affected by the parental photoperiodic conditions.Seeds from parents grown continuously in short days (SD, 8 h)had a higher dark germination and a greater response (at 30°C) to a short irradiation or low temperature pretreatmentthan seeds from plants grown continuously in long days (LD,16 h). Daily night breaks of 1 h in the middle of the long-nightinhibited the SD induction of flowering as well as the SD promotionof germinability. Germinability of seeds produced by plantsinduced to flower in LD by 1, 2, or 3 SD was lower than thatof seeds produced by plants grown continuously in SD, and decreasedwith the age of the parent plants at the time of flower induction.  相似文献

Flowering in petunias is hastened by long days, but little isknown about when the plants are most sensitive to photoperiod,or how light integral or temperature affect such phases of sensitivity. The effects of these factors on time to flowering was investigatedusing reciprocal transfer experiments between long (16 h d-1)and short days (8 h d-1). The effect of light integral on thephases of photoperiod sensitivity was examined using two sowingdates and a shading treatment (53% transmission). The effectsof temperature were investigated by conducting reciprocal transferexperiments in glasshouse compartments at five temperature regimes(means of 13.7, 19.2, 22.3, 25.0 and 28.7 °C). The lengthof the photoperiod-insensitive juvenile phase of development, when flowering cannot be induced by any environmental stimulus, was sensitive to light integral; low light integrals prolongedthis phase, from 23 d at 2.6 MJ m-2d-1to 36 d at 1.6 MJ m-2d-1(totalsolar radiation). The length of this development phase was shortest(12.5 d) at 21 °C; it was longer under cooler (21 d at 13.5°C) and warmer temperatures (17.6 d at 28.3 °C). Afterthis phase, time to flowering was influenced greatly by photoperiod, with long days hastening flowering by between 28 and 137 d,compared with short days. Plants also showed some sensitivityto both temperature and light integral during this phase, butthe duration of the final phase of flower development, duringwhich plants were photoperiod-insensitive, was dependent primarilyon the temperature at which the plants were grown; at 14.5 °C,33.9 d were required to complete this phase compared with 11.4d at 25.5 °C. The experimental approach gave valuable informationon the phases of sensitivity to photothermal environment duringthe flowering process, and could provide the basis of a morephysiologically-based quantitative model of flowering than hashitherto been attempted. The information is also useful in thescheduling of lighting and temperature treatments to give optimalflowering times of high quality plants.Copyright 1999 Annalsof Botany Company Petunia,Petuniaxhybrida, juvenility, flowering, photoperiod, temperature, light integral, reciprocal transfer.  相似文献

Carnations (Dianthus) cultivar White Sim, were grown under photoperiodiccycles comprising 8 h of natural daylight followed by 16-h ‘nights’during which different lighting treatments were given. Irradiationwith tungsten-filament lamps throughout the night was the mosteffective treatment for the promotion of flower initiation.Irrespective of the timing or duration of the lighting, tungstenfilamentlamps were more effective than ‘daylight’ fluorescentlamps. Promotion of flower initiation due to radiation from a far-redsource was greatest when irradiation followed immediately afterthe period of natural daylight and was least when it immediatelypreceded the period of daylight. Promotion of flowering dueto a red source was least when the effect of far-red was greatest.Red and far-red radiations were synergistic in their promotionof flower initiation when given simultaneously for a periodof 4 h in the middle of the night. It is suggested that in thepromotion of flower initiation in long-day plants, a requirementfor a relatively long duration of irradiation is related physiologicallyto a requirement for a relatively high proportion of far-redradiant energy.  相似文献

Heat stress can detrimentally affect the reproductive capacity of many plants. The effect of a 7 or 14 d heat stress on flowering, seed set, pollen viability and germinability of flax (Linum usistatissimum L.) was assessed under growth chamber conditions. An incremental (2 °C/h), cyclical (daytime high 40 °C and night‐time low 18 °C) heat stress was applied 12 d after the initiation of flowering. Although flower formation in flax was not affected by heat stress, boll formation and seed set were reduced with onset of the heat stress. On removal of heat stress the stressed plants showed a compensatory response, flowering and producing bolls at a greater rate than the control plants. Heat stress significantly prolonged flowering by 17 d. Boll weight and seed weight were reduced with heat stress and the number of malformed, sterile seed increased three‐fold after 14 d of heat stress. Pollen viability and appearance were negatively affected after 6 and 10 d of heat stress, respectively. Pollen germinability decreased by the sixth day of heat stress, with no pollen germinating by the tenth day. Effects of heat stress on pollen viability and germinability alone, which did not occur until after the sixth day of the stress, could not account for the decreased boll formation due to heat stress in flax. These observations suggest that a combined effect of heat stress on both pollen and ovules contributes to decreased boll formation and seed set in flax.  相似文献

Hot days and warm nights are important environmental factorslimiting fruit yields of groundnuts in the semi-arid tropics. The objective of the present research was to quantify the effectsof short episodes of heat stress on pollen production and viability, and fruit yield. Plants of cultivar ‘ICGV 86015’were grown at a day/night temperature of 28/22 °C from sowinguntil 9 d after flowering. Cohorts of plants were then exposedto a factorial combination of four day (28, 34, 42 and 48 °C)and two night (22 and 28 °C) temperatures for 6 d. Thereafter, all plants were maintained at 28/22 °C until final harvest9 d later. Number of flowers per plant (FN), the proportionof flowers setting pegs (fruit-set), the number of pegs andpods per plant (reproductive number, RNt), pollen productionper flower and pollen viability were determined during the 6d stress period. There were strong negative linear relationsbetween day temperature over the range of 28 to 48 °C andFN (slope, -1.1 °C-1), fruit-set (-2.8% °C-1), RNt(-0.90°C-1), and pollen production (-390 °C-1) and viability(-1.9% °C-1). Warmer night temperature (28 vs. 22 °C)had no effect on FN, but reduced fruit-set (31 to 19%), RNt(8to 5), and pollen production (4389 to 2800) and viability (49to 40%). There were no significant interactions between dayand night temperature. Reduced fruit-set was a consequence offewer pollen grains and reduced pollen viability. The thresholdday temperature for pollen production and viability was 34 °Cand there were strong negative linear relations between bothpollen production and pollen viability and accumulated temperature>34 °C. Phalaenopsis orchids are among the most valuable potted flowering crops commercially produced throughout the world because of their long flower life and ease of crop scheduling to meet specific market dates. During commercial production, Phalaenopsis are usually grown at an air temperature > or =28 degrees C to inhibit flower initiation, and a cooler night than day temperature regimen (e.g. 25/20 degrees C day/night) is used to induce flowering. However, the specific effect of day and night temperature on flower initiation has not been well described, and the reported requirement for a diurnal temperature fluctuation to elicit flowering is unclear. Two Phalaenopsis clones were grown in glass greenhouse compartments with constant temperature set points of 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, or 29 degrees C and fluctuating day/night (12 h/12 h) temperatures of 20/14, 23/17, 26/14, 26/20, 29/17, or 29/23 degrees C. The photoperiod was 12 h, and the maximum irradiance was controlled to < or =150 micromol m(-2) s(-1). After 20 weeks, > or =80% of plants of both clones had a visible inflorescence when grown at constant 14, 17, 20, or 23 degrees C and at fluctuating day/night temperatures of 20/14 degrees C or 23/17 degrees C. None of the plants were reproductive within 20 weeks when grown at a constant 29 degrees C or at 29/17 degrees C or 29/23 degrees C day/night temperature regimens. The number of inflorescences per plant and the number of flower buds on the first inflorescence were greatest when the average daily temperature was 14 degrees C or 17 degrees C. These results indicate that a day/night fluctuation in temperature is not required for inflorescence initiation in these two Phalaenopsis clones. Furthermore, the inhibition of flowering when the day temperature was 29 degrees C and the night temperature was 17 degrees C or 23 degrees C suggests that a warm day temperature inhibits flower initiation in Phalaenopsis.  相似文献

There is a heteroblastic change in leaflet number in many stocksof Vicia faba, the rate of change being affected by the temperatureand photoperiod under which the plants are grown. In all exceptthe earliest flowering stocks of broad beans, and particularlyat high temperatures, flower initiation shows a quantita-tivelong-day response. For full development of the initiated inflorescenceslong days are required. Flower initiation may be accelerated in all except the earliestflowering stocks of V.faba by brief exposures to low temperatures, particularly when the plants are grown in short days at hightemperatures. The response to low temperatures is more rapidat I0° C. than at 4° C. but eventually approaches saturationat both temperatures. More prolonged exposure to low temperaturesdelays flower initia-tion. The response to low temperaturesincreases with increasing plant age but can occur during embryodevelopment on the mother plant. At temperatures above 14° C, and particularly above 23°C, a reaction inhibitory to flower initiation occurs. This reactionis probably restricted to the diurnal dark periods but is operativeat all stages of the life cycle, including embryo development. Its inhibitory effects may be overcome by subsequent cold treatment, and when the low temperature processes have reached saturationsubsequent high temperatures are no longer inhibitory. Although nucleosides could accelerate flower initiation, purineand pyrimidene analogues did not, with one exception, reducethe response to low temperature treatment.  相似文献

Silene latifolia Poiret is a reliable model system for studying many of the classical problems in biology because little difference in its physiological response to environmental stimuli has been found between genders. In this experiment, we studied flowering responses to day length in male and female S. latifolia plants grown at different temperatures. The primary objective was to examine whether flowering in male and female plants was differentially influenced by day length and temperature. We hypothesized that temperature would interact with day length in affecting flowering, because both genders have been found to flower in a wide range of day lengths and temperatures. Plants were grown in environmental chambers at a target temperature of 15/10 or 30/25°C (day/night). Day length was increased by half-hour intervals until all plants had flowered. Results showed that S. latifolia is a qualitative long-day plant with a critical day length of 11 h. Flowering accelerated with increasing day length until 16.5 h, when all plants flowered. Males and females differed in relative flowering at different day lengths, but to a greater extent at high than at low temperature. This study demonstrated that flowering of male and female S. latifolia respond differently to day length at different temperatures. A more uniform experimental protocol, especially in controlled environments, is called for to make this model system a more useful tool in biological studies.  相似文献

The origin and development of anlagen (undifferentiated primordia),inflorescences, tendrils and flowers in the grape cv. Shirazhas been investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Anlagenarise terminally by bisection of the apex of the so-called latentbud. The axis of the latent bud is continued by the originalapex and anlagen are displaced laterally. Micrographs presentedhere favour the interpretation of the grape-vine shoot as amonopodium. Anlagen formed distal to the 10th node of container grown vinesformed inflorescence primordia when plants were grown at hightemperatures (33°C day-28°C night). At lower temperatures(21°C day, 16°C night or 18°Cday, 13°C night)anlagen formed distal to the 10th node grew into tendril primordia. At basal nodes anlagen gave rise to shoot primordia. Each branchof the highly-divided inflorescence primordium of Shiraz formsfive flower primordia. Flower development is discussed.  相似文献

Factorial combinations of four photoperiods (10 h, 11 h 40 min,13 h 20 min and 15 h) and three night temperatures (14, 19 and24 °C) combined with a single day temperature (30 °C)were imposed on nodulated plants of 11 cowpea accessions [Vignaunguiculata (L) Walp.] grown in pots in growth cabinets. Thetimes to first appearance of flower buds, open flowers and maturepods were recorded. Linear relationships were established betweenthe reciprocal of the times taken to flower and both mean diurnaltemperature and photoperiod. When the equations describing thesetwo responses are solved, the time to flower in any given photothermalregime is predicted by whichever solution calls for the greaterdelay in flowering. Thus in different circumstances floweringis controlled exclusively by either mean temperature or photoperiod. The value of the critical photoperiod is temperature-dependentand a further equation, derived from the first two, predictsthis relationship. Considered together as a quantitative modelthese relationships suggest simple field methods for screeninggenotypes to determine photo-thermal response surfaces.
