From the end of 1830, Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire worked to prepare a book on thalattosuchians (Mesoeucrocodylia, Thalattosuchia) from the Jurassic of Normandy. This work, planned to be entitled “Histoire des crocodiliens renfermés dans le terrain oolithique”, was never completed. Searches in the archives of the central library of the “Muséum national d’histoire naturelle”, Paris, resulted in the rediscovery of the set of original drawings ordered by Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to illustrate his book. These drawings, 21 in total, were executed by several artists working in the Muséum, including Jean-Charles Werner, Henri-Joseph Redouté, and Nicolas Hüet. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire offered this collection of drawings to the French Academy of Sciences in March 1834. These drawings were then donated to the library of the Muséum in November 1924 by Alfred Lacroix. This iconographic collection is of the highest importance for the history of palaeontology in France as it depicts unknown specimens that were destroyed during World War II.  相似文献

Apocricetus Freudenthal et al. (Treballs del Museu de Geologia de Barcelona 7: 11–93, 1998) is a medium to large Cricetinae, practically without mesolophids in the m1 and m2, with long third molars; anterior and posterior protolophule are present and the posterior metalophule is reduced or absent. Apocricetus barrierei (Mein and Michaux Comptes Rendus Academie de Sciences de Paris D 270: 2780–2783, 1970) was defined on the basis of three specimens from the French locality Chabrier. Apart from this site, several French and Spanish localities of Early Pliocene age contain remains of this species. Despite this extra material, the species is poorly characterized, and none of the localities contains material of all six dental elements. In this paper, two new assemblages from La Bullana 2B and La Bullana 3 (Cabriel Basin, Spain) are described. The rich assemblage from La Bullana 2B provides a better insight in the metrical and morphological variability of this species.  相似文献

Introduction     
The edition of a special issue entitled “Neuroscience in China” provides a unique opportunity to introduce neuroscience research undertakings in China today. Among the biological sciences at large, neuroscience is one of the most advanced fields in China. To take two examples, more than 70% of the articles published in the Chinese Journal of Physiology were in the category of neuroscience; among the members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), scientists in the field of neuroscience outnumber scientists in other disciplines of basic medical sciences. This assay tries to analyze the historical and contemporary background underlying the current status.  相似文献

The glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca vitripennis (Germar) (= H. coagulata [Say]) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), was a major exotic pest in French Polynesia until a classical biological control program against this pest was conducted using the host-specific egg parasitoid Gonatocerus ashmeadi Girault (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae). After risk assessment studies indicated an acceptably low potential threat to non-target species, parasitoids were released on Tahiti in May 2005. One year after release, populations of H. vitripennis had decreased by more than 90% in Tahiti and nearby Moorea. Here we present results of impact studies obtained during the second post-release year for G. ashmeadi in Tahiti and Moorea; we also report for the first time on results for eight other H. vitripennis infested islands located in three different archipelagos (Society, Marquesas, and Austral) of French Polynesia. On all infested islands across the three archipelagos, arrival of G. ashmeadi slashed H. vitripennis densities by more than 95%. In Tahiti and Moorea, H. vitripennis populations were maintained at very low densities during the second post-release year. Seasonal fluctuations of H. vitripennis abundance were observed in Tahiti with pest populations being more abundant during the cooler dry season than during the warmer wet season because of lower parasitism rates. Hence, similar seasonal fluctuations of H. vitripennis abundance are expected across all infested archipelagos in French Polynesia.  相似文献

We used an ITS2 primary and secondary structure and Compensatory Base Changes (CBCs) analyses on new French and Spanish Dunallela salina strains to investigate their phylogenetic position and taxonomic status within the genus Dunaliella. Our analyses show a great diversity within D. salina (with only some clades not statistically supported) and reveal considerable genetic diversity and structure within Dunaliella, although the CBC analysis did not bolster the existence of different biological groups within this taxon. The ITS2 sequences of the new Spanish and French D. salina strains were very similar except for two of them: ITC5105 "Janubio" from Spain and ITC5119 from France. Although the Spanish one had a unique ITS2 sequence profile and the phylogenetic tree indicates that this strain can represent a new species, this hypothesis was not confirmed by CBCs, and clarification of its taxonomic status requires further investigation with new data. Overall, the use of CBCs to define species boundaries within Dunaliella was not conclusive in some cases, and the ITS2 region does not contain a geographical signal overall.  相似文献

Two grape cultivars, susceptible French Colombard and tolerant Rubired, and four nematodes, Meloidogyne incognita, Pratylenchus vulnus, Tylenchulus semipenetrans, and Xiphinema index, were used to quantify the equilibrium between root (R) and shoot (S) growth. Root and shoot growth of French Colombard was retarded by M. incognita, P. vulnus, and X. index but not by T. semipenetrans. Although the root growth of Rubired was limited by all the nematodes, the shoot growth was limited only by X. index. The R:S ratios of Rubired were higher than those of French Colombard. The reduced R:S ratios of Rubired were primarily an expression of reduction in root systems without an equal reduction in shoot growth, whereas in French Colombard the reduced R:S ratios were due to a reduction in both shoot growth and root growth and to a greater reduction in root growth than shoot growth. All nematodes reproduced equally well on both cultivars. Both foliage and root growth of French Colombard were significantly reduced by M. incognita and P. vulnus. Nematodes reduced the shoot length by reducing the internode length. Accumulative R:S ratios in inoculated plants were significantly smaller than those in controls in all nematode treatments but not at individual harvest dates. Bud break was delayed by X. index and was initiated earlier by P. vulnus and M. incognita. All buds in nematode treatments were less vigorous than in controls.  相似文献

N-acylphosphatidylethanolamine (NAPE) and N-acylplasmenylethanolamine (pNAPE) are widely found phospholipids, and they are precursors for N-acylethanolamines, a group of compounds that has a variety of biological effects and encompasses the endocannabinoid anandamide. NAPE and pNAPE are synthesized by the transfer of an acyl chain from a donor phospholipid, to the amine in phosphatidylethanolamine or plasmenylethanolamine. NAPE has been reported to stabilize model membranes during brain ischemia, and to modulate food intake in rodents, thus having bioactive effects besides its precursor role. This paper reviews the metabolism, occurrence and assay of NAPE and pNAPE, and discusses the putative biological functions in mammals of these phospholipids. Background

Until 2008, human rabies had never been reported in French Guiana. On 28 May 2008, the French National Reference Center for Rabies (Institut Pasteur, Paris) confirmed the rabies diagnosis, based on hemi-nested polymerase chain reaction on skin biopsy and saliva specimens from a Guianan, who had never travelled overseas and died in Cayenne after presenting clinically typical meningoencephalitis.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Molecular typing of the virus identified a Lyssavirus (Rabies virus species), closely related to those circulating in hematophagous bats (mainly Desmodus rotundus) in Latin America. A multidisciplinary Crisis Unit was activated. Its objectives were to implement an epidemiological investigation and a veterinary survey, to provide control measures and establish a communications program. The origin of the contamination was not formally established, but was probably linked to a bat bite based on the virus type isolated. After confirming exposure of 90 persons, they were vaccinated against rabies: 42 from the case''s entourage and 48 healthcare workers. To handle that emergence and the local population''s increased demand to be vaccinated, a specific communications program was established using several media: television, newspaper, radio.

Conclusion/Significance

This episode, occurring in the context of a Department far from continental France, strongly affected the local population, healthcare workers and authorities, and the management team faced intense pressure. This observation confirms that the risk of contracting rabies in French Guiana is real, with consequences for population educational program, control measures, medical diagnosis and post-exposure prophylaxis.  相似文献

Ubiquinone, also called coenzyme Q, is a lipid subject to oxido-reduction cycles. It functions in the respiratory electron transport chain and plays a pivotal role in energy generating processes. In this review, we focus on the biosynthetic pathway and physiological role of ubiquinone in bacteria. We present the studies which, within a period of five decades, led to the identification and characterization of the genes named ubi and involved in ubiquinone production in Escherichia coli. When available, the structures of the corresponding enzymes are shown and their biological function is detailed. The phenotypes observed in mutants deficient in ubiquinone biosynthesis are presented, either in model bacteria or in pathogens. A particular attention is given to the role of ubiquinone in respiration, modulation of two-component activity and bacterial virulence. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a genetic disease characterized by renal cyst formation and caused by mutations in the PKD1 and PKD2 genes, which encode polycystin-1(PC-1) and -2 (PC-2) proteins, respectively. PC-1 is a large plasma membrane receptor involved in the regulation of several biological functions and signaling pathways including the Wnt cascade, AP-1, PI3kinase/Akt, GSK3β, STAT6, Calcineurin/NFAT and the ERK and mTOR cascades. PC-2 is a calcium channel of the TRP family. The two proteins form a functional complex and prevent cyst formation, but the precise mechanism(s) involved remains unknown. The European grapevine moth, Lobesia botrana (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is a major pest of grapevines responsible for great economic losses and frequent insecticide applications. Nevertheless, the use of parasitoids as potential biological control agents has received very little attention. In this study, we present results from a survey on parasitoid species collected from French and Swiss vineyards over a period of 2 years. Over 2000 larvae of L. botrana were collected from six grape cultivars out of which a total of 118 parasitoids emerged. Ten species were identified. Exochus notatus (Holmgren, 1858) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) was the most abundant species and has a wide geographical distribution. Another parasitoid species, Agrypon anxium (Wesmael, 1849) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), had never been described on L. botrana before and two others remain unidentified Goniozus sp. (Förster, 1851) (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) and Apanteles sp. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). Other species include Phytomyptera nigrina (Meigen, 1824) (Diptera: Tachinidae) as well as Campoplex capitator (Aubert, 1960), Diadegma fenestralis (Holmgren, 1860), Dicaelotus inflexus (Thomson, 1891) Itoplectis maculator (Fabricius, 1775) and Triclistus meridiator Aubert, 1984 (all Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). We observed substantial regional variation in species richness and also found that abundance and diversity of several parasitoid species varied as a function of geographical location and grape cultivar. The parasitism rate by E. notatus was for example affected by grape cultivar suggesting that biological control may be affected by the cultivar of the host plant. These results are discussed in the context of tritrophic interactions and focus especially on the role of grape cultivar on parasitoid richness. We also suggest potential development of native parasitoid species in the implementation of biological control programs against L. botrana.  相似文献

Background

Recently, a mutation was discovered in the DMRT3 gene that controls pacing in horses. The mutant allele A is fixed in the American Standardbred trotter breed, while in the French trotter breed, the frequency of the wild-type allele C is still 24%. This study aimed at measuring the effect of DMRT3 genotypes on the performance of French trotters and explaining why the polymorphism still occurs in this breed. Using a mixed animal model, genetic parameters and environmental effects on performance traits were estimated from data on 173 176 French trotter races. The effect of the DMRT3 gene was then estimated by the effect of genotype at the highly linked SNP BIEC2-620109 (C-C, A-T) for 630 horses. A selection scheme that included qualification and racing performances was modeled to (1) verify if the observed superiority of heterozygous CT horses at this SNP could be explained only by selection and (2) understand why allele C has not disappeared in French trotters.

Results

Heritability of racing performance traits was high for qualification test (0.56), moderate for annual earnings per finished race (0.26 to 0.31) and low for proportion of disqualified races (0.06 to 0.09). Genotype CC was always unfavorable compared to genotype TT for qualification: the probability to be qualified was 20% for CC vs. 48% for TT and earnings were -0.96 σy lower for CC than for TT. Genotype CT was also unfavorable for qualification (40%) and earnings at 3 years (-0.21 σy), but favorable for earnings at ages greater than 5 years: +0.41 σy (P = 7.10−4). Selection on qualification could not explain more than 19% of the difference between genotypes CC and CT in earnings at ages greater than 5 years. Only a scenario for which genotype CT has a favorable effect on the performance of horses older than 5 years could explain that the polymorphism at the DMRT3 gene still exists in the French trotter breed.

Conclusions

The use of mature horses in the French racing circuit can explain that the CA genotype is still present in the French trotter horses.  相似文献

Major genetic factors for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) have recently been identified as susceptibility risk factors, including variants in the CFH gene and the ARMS2 LOC387715/HTRA1locus. Our purpose was to perform a case-control study in two populations among individuals who did not carry risk variants for CFHY402H and LOC387715 A69S (ARMS2), called “study” individuals, in order to identify new genetic risk factors. Based on a candidate gene approach, we analyzed SNP rs5888 of the SCARB1 gene, coding for SRBI, which is involved in the lipid and lutein pathways. This study was conducted in a French series of 1241 AMD patients and 297 controls, and in a North American series of 1257 patients with advanced AMD and 1732 controls. Among these individuals, we identified 61 French patients, 77 French controls, 85 North American patients and 338 North American controls who did not carry the CFH nor ARMS2 polymorphisms. An association between AMD and the SCARB1 gene was seen among the study subjects. The genotypic distribution of the rs5888 polymorphism was significantly different between cases and controls in the French population (p<0.006). Heterozygosity at the rs5888 SNP increased risk of AMD compared to the CC genotypes in the French study population (odds ratio (OR) = 3.5, CI95%: 1.4–8.9, p<0.01) and after pooling the 2 populations (OR = 2.9, 95% CI: 1.6–5.3, p<0.002). Subgroup analysis in exudative forms of AMD revealed a pooled OR of 3.6 for individuals heterozygous for rs5888 (95% CI: 1.7–7.6, p<0.0015). These results suggest the possible contribution of SCARB1, a new genetic factor in AMD, and implicate a role for cholesterol and antioxidant micronutrient (lutein and vitamin E) metabolism in AMD.  相似文献

As a frequent inhabitant of sites polluted with toxic chemicals, the soil bacterium and plant-root colonizer Pseudomonas putida can tolerate high levels of endogenous and exogenous oxidative stress. Yet, the ultimate reason of such phenotypic property remains largely unknown. To shed light on this question, metabolic network-wide routes for NADPH generation—the metabolic currency that fuels redox-stress quenching mechanisms—were inspected when P. putida KT2440 was challenged with a sub-lethal H2O2 dose as a proxy of oxidative conditions. 13C-tracer experiments, metabolomics, and flux analysis, together with the assessment of physiological parameters and measurement of enzymatic activities, revealed a substantial flux reconfiguration in oxidative environments. In particular, periplasmic glucose processing was rerouted to cytoplasmic oxidation, and the cyclic operation of the pentose phosphate pathway led to significant NADPH-forming fluxes, exceeding biosynthetic demands by ~50%. The resulting NADPH surplus, in turn, fueled the glutathione system for H2O2 reduction. These properties not only account for the tolerance of P. putida to environmental insults—some of which end up in the formation of reactive oxygen species—but they also highlight the value of this bacterial host as a platform for environmental bioremediation and metabolic engineering.Subject terms: Bacteriology, Environmental sciences  相似文献

Background: CO-releasing molecules (CO-RMs) are potential therapeutic agents, able to deliver CO – a critical gasotransmitter – in biological environments. CO-RMs are also effective antimicrobial agents; although the mechanisms of action are poorly defined, haem-containing terminal oxidases are primary targets. Nevertheless, it is clear from several studies that the effects of CO-RMs on biological systems are frequently not adequately explained by the release of CO: CO-RMs are generally more potent inhibitors than is CO gas and other effects of the molecules are evident. Methods: Because sensitivity to CO-RMs cannot be predicted by sensitivity to CO gas, we assess the differential susceptibilities of strains, each expressing only one of the three terminal oxidases of E. coli — cytochrome bd-I, cytochrome bd-II and cytochrome bo′, to inhibition by CORM-3. We present the first sensitive measurement of the oxygen affinity of cytochrome bd-II (Km 0.24 μM) employing globin deoxygenation. Finally, we investigate the way(s) in which thiol compounds abolish the inhibitory effects of CORM-2 and CORM-3 on respiration, growth and viability, a phenomenon that is well documented, but poorly understood. Results: We show that a strain expressing cytochrome bd-I as the sole oxidase is least susceptible to inhibition by CORM-3 in its growth and respiration of both intact cells and membranes. Growth studies show that cytochrome bd-II has similar CORM-3 sensitivity to cytochrome bo′. Cytochromes bo′ and bd-II also have considerably lower affinities for oxygen than bd-I. We show that the ability of N-acetylcysteine to abrogate the toxic effects of CO-RMs is not attributable to its antioxidant effects, or prevention of CO targeting to the oxidases, but may be largely due to the inhibition of CO-RM uptake by bacterial cells. Conclusions: A strain expressing cytochrome bd-I as the sole terminal oxidase is least susceptible to inhibition by CORM-3. N-acetylcysteine is a potent inhibitor of CO-RM uptake by E. coli. General significance: Rational design and exploitation of CO-RMs require a fundamental understanding of their activity. CO and CO-RMs have multifaceted effects on mammalian and microbial cells; here we show that the quinol oxidases of E. coli are differentially sensitive to CORM-3.
