Observations of the habitats and relative flowering of a Clarkia species with hairy flower buds and several with hairless flower buds led to the hypothesis that long hairs on flower buds regulate bud temperature. This hypothesis predicts that hairless buds would be warmer and develop faster than hairy buds, which would be cooler, develop more slowly, and avoid high temperature stress. The hypothesis was tested by comparing flower bud growth rates and temperatures in three genetically similar biotypes of Clarkia unguiculata and in all six species of section Phaeostoma. Flower buds of the three biotypes included hairy (HY) and hairless (HN) from the same coastal population and densely hairy (HD) from an interior locality. The six species included C. unguiculata with densely hairy buds (HD) and five related species with hairless buds. Contrary to expectations, HY buds grew more rapidly than HN buds. HD buds grew more rapidly than either and also more rapidly than the hairless buds of five related species. Again contrary to expectations, the three biotypes of C. unguiculata had equivalent temperature relations, with bud temperatures mostly somewhat below air temperatures. In a comparative experiment, bud temperatures in C. unguiculata approximated air temperatures while bud temperatures in five related species mostly fell well below air temperatures. Thus, predictions of the hypothesis were not borne out. Long bud hairs apparently have minimal effect on bud growth rates and temperatures, and we conclude that physiological adaptations are more important. Bud cooling mechanisms are discussed.  相似文献

Background and Aims: The aims of this study were to set up proliferation conditionsfor hairy roots of Coffea arabica regenerated after transformationby Agrobacterium rhizogenes strain A4-RS, and to carry out themorphological and molecular characterization of hairy root clonesmaintained over the long term. Methods: Auxin supply, light conditions and sucrose concentration weremodified with the aim of establishing efficient root proliferationconditions. The morphological variability among 62 establishedhairy root clones was phenotyped by scanning the roots and analysingthe images using ‘whinRHIZO’ software procedures.PCR analysis of integration in transformed root cells of roland aux oncogenes from the T-DNA of the Ri plasmid was usedto study the molecular variability among clones. Key Results: Auxin supply was necessary to obtain and stimulate growth andbranching, and IBA applied at 0·5 µM was the mostefficient auxin. Significant differences were shown among the62 clones for total root length and for the percentage of fineroots. These variables were stable across subcultures and couldhence be used for efficient characterization of hairy root clones.The majority of hairy root clones (86 %) exhibited non-significantphenotype differences with non-transformed roots. Eight cloneswere significantly different from the non-transformed controlsin that they possessed a low proportion of fine roots. Two otherhairy root clones grew significantly faster than the other clones.The PCR analysis revealed a low variability in the integrationof rol and aux oncogenes in transformed root cells. The TR-DNAwas never integrated as aux1 and aux2 genes were not found,although rolB and rolC genes from the TL-DNA were always present. Conclusions: The discovery of low morphological variability among coffeehairy roots together with the identification of morphologicalvariables allowing easy identification of phenotypically alteredclones represent two important results. They make hairy rootsa possible, and efficient, tool for functional-genomic studiesof coffee root genes.  相似文献

The relationship between temperature and the distribution ofMiscanthusfloridulus(Labill) Warb andM. transmorrisonensisHayata alongaltitudinal gradients in central Taiwan was examined. Responsesof biomass accumulation, leaf characteristics and photosyntheticgas exchange to growth temperature (from 10 to 30 °C) ofM.floridulusfrom an altitude of 390 m and ofM. transmorrisonensisfrom2700 m were determined. There were differences between the twospecies in above-ground biomass, CO2uptake characteristics andleaf chlorophyll contents in response to growth temperature.The optimal temperatures for biomass accumulation were 30/25(day/night temperature) and 25/20 °C forM. floridulusandM.transmorrisonensis,respectively. Light saturated photosyntheticrates (Amax) were largest in plants grown at the optimal temperature.Growth at 15/10 and 10/10 °C compared to the optima reducedaccumulated biomass, leaf chlorophyll content and photosyntheticrate in both species with a greater reduction inM. floridulusthaninM. transmorrisonensis.We concluded that growth ofM. floridulusathigh altitude is limited by an inability to grow at temperatureslower than 15 °C, whileM. transmorrisonensisis able to growin chilling temperatures at higher altitudes.Copyright 1998Annals of Botany Company Miscanthus floridulus;M. transmorrisonensis; C4plants; chlorophyll content; leaf growth; photosynthetic gas exchange; biomass accumulation; temperature response.  相似文献

在芦芽山地区采集3个不同海拔的华北落叶松(Larix principis-rupprechtii),在传统去趋势的基础上,采用"signal-free"方法对拟合曲线进行修正,避免了中等频率的气候信息引起的拟合偏差,最终建立3个不同海拔树轮宽度标准年表(STD)。同时以10a为界对上述年表进行滤波处理,得到3个低频年表。年表特征值表明,随着海拔升高,年轮平均轮宽变窄,敏感性和高频信息增强,低频信息减弱,这可能与逐渐恶劣的生境有关。中、低海拔年表的低频信息更一致,中、高海拔的高频信息更接近,而高、低海拔无论是标准年表还是高频、低频年表相似性均较差。树轮气候响应分析显示,低海拔STD年表与5月最低温负相关最为显著,STD和低频年表均与5、6月份土壤温度显著负相关,说明生境暖干,树木主要受生长季的干旱胁迫;中海拔STD年表与当年5月最高温正相关最为显著,STD和低频年表与土壤温度相关均不显著,说明生境逐渐变得冷湿,生长季的低温成为树木生长的限制因子;高海拔STD年表与气象要素相关不显著,低频年表与当年4月土壤温度正相关,说明高海拔最为冷湿,并有季节性冻土分布,生长季的土壤低温成为树木生长的限制因子。因此,全球变暖的趋势将更有利于高海拔树木的生长,而低海拔树木的干旱胁迫进一步加剧。  相似文献

It is proposed that surface scums of densely packed planktoniccyanobacteria (blue-green algae) which exist for weeks to months,measure several decimeters in thickness and are covered by acrust of photo-oxidized cells, be called hyperscums. Hyperscumsof Microcystis aeruginosa formed during prolonged periods ofcalm weather in wind-protected sites in a hypertrophic lakesubject to low wind speeds (Hart beespoort Dam, South Africa).A hyperscum that extended over 1–2 hectares and persistedfor 103 days during winter 1983 was studied. Chlorophyll a concentrationsranged from 100 to 300 mg l–2 Microcystis cell concentrationsreached 1.76x109 cells ml–1 or 116 cm3l–1. The hyperscumenvironment was anoxic, aphotic, with a fluctuating temperatureregime and low pH values. The densely packed Microcystis cellssurvived these conditions for more than 2 months. This was shownby comparing the potential photosynthetic capacity of Microcystisfrom the hyperscum with that of Microcystis from the main basinof the lake. However, after 3 months the hyperscum algae losttheir photosynthetic capacity and decomposition processes prevailed.The hyperscum gradually shrank in size until a storm causedits complete disintegration.  相似文献

While several studies have examined the abiotic effects of altitude (low ambient temperatures and hypoxia) on the aerobic performance of small mammals, few have explored the effects of development and maturation at different altitudes on aerobic performance as adults. We examined the basal metabolism and aerobic performance of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) under four different developmental and testing regimes: (1) reared (gestation through weaning) and tested at high altitude; (2) reared and tested at low altitude; (3) reared at low altitude and tested at high altitude after acclimation; and (4) reared at low altitude and tested in hypoxia without acclimation. We found that mice that developed and were tested at low altitudes had a higher aerobic capacity (both aerobic performance and basal metabolic rate) than those that developed, or were acclimated as adults, at high altitudes. In addition, we found that mice that developed at high altitude did not have a higher aerobic capacity than those that developed at low altitude and were acclimated to high altitude as adults. Both groups tested at high altitudes had higher hematocrits (% red blood cells) and hemoglobin than mice tested at low altitudes. Surprisingly, mice acclimated to low altitudes and given an instantaneous exposure to hypoxia did not suffer a depression in aerobic performance.  相似文献

Thermal stress is one environmental parameter that has greatlyinfluenced the migration of crustaceans from the sea to land.Since a greater number of species of terrestrial crabs are foundin the tropics than in the temperate zone, comparative studiesof the influence of temperature on latitudinally separated populationswere undertaken. Two tropical species, U. rapax and U. thayeri,may occur as far north as St. Augustine, Florida, or, followinga severe winter, may be rare north of Cape Kennedy. The lethaleffect of the low temperatures recorded during one severe winter(1957–58) is supported by laboratory studies in whichLD50, deaths occurred in 4.5 days at 10°C for U. rapax acclimatedto 18°C. The experiment demonstrates that U. rapax cannotacclimate to and survive low temperatures. This contrasts markedlywith the situation in semi-terrestrial crabs of the temperatezone, which are able to acclimate to cold. The distribution of Uca around Cape Cod Bay correlates wellwith the coastal hydrographic thermal gradient and supportsPassano's suggestion that temperatures below 20° may belimiting as they inhibit proecdysis in U. pugnax. Such an inhibitionis found experimentally in U. pugilator and in the tropicalspecies, U. rapax. It is hypothesized that a shift in the thermodynamicsof the processes underlying molting has not occurred in Ucaof the temperate zone. The paucity of semi-terrestrial Brachyurain the temperate zone may be due to the failure of many speciesto evolve capacity-adaptations to carry out all requisite lifeprocesses at temperatures below 20°, or the resistance-adaptationsnecessary to survive the low temperatures of winter.  相似文献

The effect of low temperatures on the fatty acid compositionof phosphatidylglycerol (PG) in thylakoid membranes, in particularon the ratios of nmol% 16:1(3t) (mg fresh weight)–1 ofcotyledons and nmol 16:1(3t) (mg chlo rophyll)–1 weremeasured during squash seedling growth. Plants were germinatedand grown for one day at 30°C then were either kept at 30°C(control plants) or trans ferred to low temperatures (18, 14or 10°C). When plant were transferred from 30°C to lowtemperatures, the increase in fresh weight was gradually limited.The lowe the temperature, the smaller was the fresh weight.In contrast, the relative content of 16:1(3t) and 18:3, as wella the ratios of nmol 16:1(3t) (mg chlorophyll)–1 and mol%16:1(3t) (mg cotyledon fresh weight)–1 increased indicatingthat the increase of fresh weight and chlorophyll was mor sensitiveto low temperature than PG desaturation in thyla-koid membranes.Furthermore, low temperatures inducei an increase in 16:1(3t)and 18:3 (the final products of PC synthesis) at the expenseof 16:0 and 18:1 (the initial products of PG synthesis). However,within a range of temperature from 10 to 18°C, the extentof these changes (nmol% of 18:3 or 16:1(3t) per day) was graduallylimited by lower temperatures. We therefore propose that lowtemperature inhibit both fatty acid synthesis and desaturationactivities. However, at low temperatures the fatty acid synthesisis likely to be more strongly inhibited than the desaturationactivities, thus explaining the observed increase in the relativecontent of PG-18:3 and PG-16:l(3t). Shoot and root growth rate, carbohydrate accumulation (includingfructan), reducing sugar content and dry matter percentage weremeasured in six wheat cultivars, ranging from winter to springtypes, grown at either 5 or 25 °C. At 5 °C (comparedwith 25 °C), the relative growth rate (RGR) of shoots wassimilarly reduced in all cultivars, but the RGR of shoots wasmore affected in winter wheats. This difference resulted insmaller root:shoot ratios than in spring wheats, which alsodeveloped more first-order lateral roots. A direct relationshipbetween carbohydrate accumulation at low temperatures and reductionin root growth was established. The onset and rate of infection in root hairs of T. parviflorumand T. glomeratum inoculated with Rhizobium trifolli strain5 varied much with root temperature. At moderate root temperature(18, 24, and 30 °C) infections were initiated earlier andin larger numbers than at low (6 and 12 °C) or moderatelyhigh (36 °C) temperatures. Both species showed a broad temperatureoptimum between 18 and 30 °C. The site of thread initiation(apically or laterally in a hair) was independent of temperature,as was also the proportion of successful threads penetratingthe root cortex, which increased with seedling age. Threadsgrew more slowly at low temperatures. The size of hair nucleinear infection threads remained unaffected by temperature, butnuclei associated with laterally originating threads were largerthan those associated with apical threads. Infection was non-randomly distributed along the main root atall temperatures. More zones of infection were found at moderatetemperatures than at temperature extremes (6–12 or 36°C). Probit plots of numbers of infections for individualplants were steplike, the linear sloping parts correspondingto normal distributions of infection within zones. Between 18 and 30 °C numbers of infections increased exponentiallyin two phases, the first more rapid phase ending at about thetime nodules appeared. A model devised for the infection processand fitted to the data suggested the existence of two kindsof infections: primary ones occuring randomly at a slow rateand probably not affected by temperature and secondary infectionsthat appeared to increase with rising temperatures in the range12 to 30 °C. Nodule numbers were relatively more sensitive to high and lowtemperatures than infection. The numbers of infections and nodulesand the root lengths of T. parviflorum were twice those of T.glomeratum except at the temperature extremes. Numbers of infectionswere otherwise unrelated to root length or cotyledon or leafareas. The development of lateral organs (primordia, lateralroots, and nodules) was reduced at temperatures below 18 °Cand above 30 °C.  相似文献

There is a heteroblastic change in leaflet number in many stocksof Vicia faba, the rate of change being affected by the temperatureand photoperiod under which the plants are grown. In all exceptthe earliest flowering stocks of broad beans, and particularlyat high temperatures, flower initiation shows a quantita-tivelong-day response. For full development of the initiated inflorescenceslong days are required. Flower initiation may be accelerated in all except the earliestflowering stocks of V.faba by brief exposures to low temperatures,particularly when the plants are grown in short days at hightemperatures. The response to low temperatures is more rapidat I0° C. than at 4° C. but eventually approaches saturationat both temperatures. More prolonged exposure to low temperaturesdelays flower initia-tion. The response to low temperaturesincreases with increasing plant age but can occur during embryodevelopment on the mother plant. At temperatures above 14° C, and particularly above 23°C, a reaction inhibitory to flower initiation occurs. This reactionis probably restricted to the diurnal dark periods but is operativeat all stages of the life cycle, including embryo development.Its inhibitory effects may be overcome by subsequent cold treatment,and when the low temperature processes have reached saturationsubsequent high temperatures are no longer inhibitory. Although nucleosides could accelerate flower initiation, purineand pyrimidene analogues did not, with one exception, reducethe response to low temperature treatment.  相似文献

Autumnal sedimentation of the Microcystis population was studiedin Lake Nieuwe Meer (Amsterdam, The Netherlands). In summer,Microcystis formed a high percentage of the total phytoplanktonin the water column, but a low percentage in sedimentation traps.The reverse was found during September and October, with a highpercentage in the sedimentation traps, but a low percentagein the water column. The decrease in the numbers of Microcystiscolonies coincided with a decrease in waler temperature. Inexperiment with a strain of Mirocystis, isolated from Lake NieuweMeer, the percentage of total colonies that were sinking increasedin a few days to 100% after a shift from 20C to 15.3, 13.0or 10.5C. The gas vesicle volume in the cells remained constantduring the incubations. Sinking of the colonies resulted froman increased glycogen content. Calculation of carbon (C) flowsduring the first 2 days of the incubation at reduced temperatureshowed that the glycogen accumulation was the result of a muchlower rate of protein synthesis during the light period at thelower temperatures. Although the photosynthetic rate itselfdecreased at reduced temperature, it resulted in more fixedCO2 being stored as glucose. Because the respiratory rate alsodecreased (with an almost similar decrease to that of photosynthesis),glycogen accumulated at lower temperatures. It was calculatedthat after an incubation period of-I week at reduced temperature,the rate of photosynthesis had decreased by 10.1% of the valueat 20C per 1C, while the rate of respiration had decreasedonly 1.8%. It is proposed that there is a feedback mechanismin which an increasing concentration of glycogen inhibits photosynthesisand stimulates respiration.  相似文献

In their response to environmental stimuli, terrestrial isopodsshow various trends that are correlated with their ecology andphysiology. With the transition from sea to the littoral zone (Ligia), orientationto light changes from positive to negative. Yet, since theseisopods are positively hygrokinetic even at very high humidities,their hygroreaction is of greater significance than their photoreaction. In isopods from mesic habitats (Oniscus, Porcellio, Armadillidium)photoreaction becomes of less significance than in littoralspecies, until in some species it reverts to positive (Armadillidium).Sometimes the positive photoreaction occurs only at high temperatures(Porcellio), a pattern of behavior correlated with thermoregulationby evaporative cooling. Similarly, in mesic species the responseto humidity becomes less significant than in littoral species,resuming importance mainly when the isopods become dehydrated(Armadillidium). Finally, in isopods from xeric habitats in semi-arid and desertregions (Armadillo, Venezillo), photoreaction is strongly negativeexcept in Hemilepistus at lower temperatures. All of these isopodsare positively hygrokinetic only at low humidities and are stronglynegatively thermoactive, indicating a drop in activity at hightemperatures. Mesophyll and bundle sheath chloroplasts were prepared fromleaves of Zea mays grown at light intensities of 1.1 and 240µW/cm2, respectively. The mesophyll chloroplasts thatdeveloped at the low intensity and bundle sheath chloroplatsthat developed at both low and high intensities showed higherratios of chlorophyll a/b and P700/chlorophylls compared withthe normal ratios found for the mesophyll chloroplasts thathad developed at the high intensity. Derivative absorption spectrophotometryat 77?K revealed that the low intensity mesophyll chloroplastscontained more of chlorophyll a forms with longer wavelengthred bands than high intensity mesophyll chloroplasts. More ofthe longer wavelength forms of chlorophyll a were also presentin the bundle sheath chloroplasts that had developed at lowand high intensities. All these four types of chloroplasts showedtwo peaks of fluorescence, one at 687 hra and the other at 733or 738 nm. In addition to these peaks, the high intensity mesophyllchloroplasts showed a shoulder at 697 nm, and the two typesof bundle sheath chloroplasts showed a shoulder at 680 nm. The activities of nodular uricase and allantoinase, the compositionof bleeding sap N, estimated rates of xylary N translocationand ureide assimilation in shoot tissues were compared in acold-tolerant (194) and sensitive (Seafarer, SF) line of nodulatedPhaseolus vulgaris grown under three different temperature regimes.Uricase activity increased with increasing growth temperatureand was generally greater in nodules of 194 than in SF at anyparticularly temperature. Extractable allantoinase activity,on the other hand, was highest in nodules from plants grownat the coolest temperature (15/10 C day/night) and there waslittle or no difference in activity between the lines. There was little difference in sap composition between linesor amongst temperature treatments. Ureides contributed between80–91 percent of the total sap N in both lines grown at25/15 or 20/15 C with a slightly lower per cent (65–84)when grown at 15/10 C. Estimated rates of N translocation werehigher in 194 than SF at the coolest growth temperature. Increasesin rates of N translocation between successive harvests of eitherline were often correlated with increases in total N accumulationand also an accumulation of ureides in stems plus petioles butnot leaves. Generally leaves assimilated all of the ureidesinto other compounds at all growth temperatures. Nodules andshoots of either line did not accumulate ureides at 15/10 C.194 Accumulated greater amounts of ureides in stems and petiolesthan SF when grown at the two warmer temperatures. The resultsare discussed in relation to the ability of 194 to fix greateramounts of N than SF at suboptimal growth temperatures. Moderate-altitude living (2,500 m), combined with low-altitude training (1,250 m) (i.e., livehigh-train low), results in a significantly greater improvement inmaximal O2 uptake(O2 max) and performance over equivalent sea-level training. Although the meanimprovement in group response with this "high-low" training modelis clear, the individual response displays a wide variability. Todetermine the factors that contribute to this variability, 39 collegiate runners (27 men, 12 women) were retrospectively divided intoresponders (n = 17) and nonresponders(n = 15) to altitude training on thebasis of the change in sea-level 5,000-m run time determined before andafter 28 days of living at moderate altitude and training at either lowor moderate altitude. In addition, 22 elite runners were examinedprospectively to confirm the significance of these factors in aseparate population. In the retrospective analysis, respondersdisplayed a significantly larger increase in erythropoietin (Epo)concentration after 30 h at altitude compared withnonresponders. After 14 days at altitude, Epo was still elevated inresponders but was not significantly different from sea-level values innonresponders. The Epo response led to a significant increase in totalred cell volume andO2 max in responders; in contrast, nonresponders did not show a difference in total red cellvolume or O2 maxafter altitude training. Nonresponders demonstrated a significantslowing of interval-training velocity at altitude and thus achieved asmaller O2 consumption during those intervals, compared with responders. The acute increases in Epoand O2 maxwere significantly higher in the prospective cohort of responders,compared with nonresponders, to altitude training. In conclusion, aftera 28-day altitude training camp, a significant improvement in 5,000-mrun performance is, in part, dependent on1) living at a high enough altitudeto achieve a large acute increase in Epo, sufficient to increase thetotal red cell volume andO2 max, and2) training at a low enough altitudeto maintain interval training velocity andO2 flux near sea-level values.

The molecular analysis of plant genes involved in nodulationhas been slowed by the inability to produce high numbers oftransgenic legume lines. The high efficiency gene transfer andplant regeneration systems of the model legume Lotus japonicusis described. A collection of wild-type A. rhizogenes strainswas tested for infectivity and the most virulent strains, 9402and AR10, were selected for further use. Growth conditions forplantlets, induction of hairy roots and nodulation of compositeplants were optimized for large-scale screening in Petri dishes.A cluster of 3–10 nodules was regularly formed on transgenichairy roots 7–12 d after inoculation with the effectiveRhizobium loti strain NZP2235. There were no apparent morphologicaldifferences between nodulation of hairy and wildtype roots.To test the applicability of the hairy root system for the trappingof symbiotic genes, transformation experiments with binary vectorspossessing a ß-glucuronidase (gus, uidA) or a luciferase(luc) reporter driven by a cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35Spromoter were performed. The frequency of cotransfer of a binaryT-DNA with a root-inducing (Ri) T-DNA was 70%. Positive expressionsuggests that gus and luc trap vectors can be used for genetagging in L. japonicus. To open the possibility of searchingfor mutant phenotypes, a regeneration system has been developedenabling the regeneration of large numbers of transgenic plantsfrom hairy root cultures in about 5–6 months. At the sametime, the A. tumefaciens hypocotyl transformation regenerationin L. japonicus has been improved. This new version providesfertile transgenic plants in about 4 months. Shells of Calliostoma zizyphinum taken from Strangford Lough,N. Ireland are divisible into three distinct colour forms: white(=var lyonsi) intermediate (a pale variegated form) and purple(a dark variegated form). The predominance of white and paleshelled individuals within and the absence of white Calliostomaoutside the lough was confirmed. The proportions of animalswith white and variegated shells at selected sites were almostidentical with those previously documented, suggesting a temporalstability of colour form ratios. No differences in shell thicknessand pedal adhesion were demonstrated between these forms. Snails with white shells reflect radiant heat better, have lightercoloured feet, move more rapidly, show a greater incidence ofshell repair and are more frequently exposed on weed at lowtide, than those with either intermediate or purple shells.Increased proportions of white individuals may be associatedwith high population densities. Under such circumstances, itis suggested that increased mobility may, by increasing dispersion,reduce intraspecific competition. Physiol. 83(1): 102-112, 1997.The principal objective of this study was to test the hypothesisthat acclimatization to moderate altitude (2,500 m) plus training atlow altitude (1,250 m), "living high-training low," improvessea-level performance in well-trained runners more than an equivalentsea-level or altitude control. Thirty-nine competitive runners (27 men,12 women) completed 1) a 2-wklead-in phase, followed by 2) 4 wkof supervised training at sea level; and3) 4 wk of field training camprandomized to three groups: "high-low"(n = 13), living at moderate altitude(2,500 m) and training at low altitude (1,250 m); "high-high"(n = 13), living and training atmoderate altitude (2,500 m); or "low-low"(n = 13), living and training in amountain environment at sea level (150 m). A 5,000-m time trial was theprimary measure of performance; laboratory outcomes included maximalO2 uptake(O2 max), anaerobic capacity (accumulated O2 deficit),maximal steady state (MSS; ventilatory threshold), running economy,velocity at O2 max, and blood compartment volumes. Both altitude groups significantly increased O2 max(5%) in direct proportion to an increase in red cell mass volume(9%; r = 0.37, P < 0.05), neither of which changedin the control. Five-kilometer time was improved by the field trainingcamp only in the high-low group (13.4 ± 10 s), in directproportion to the increase inO2 max(r = 0.65, P < 0.01). Velocity atO2 max andMSS also improved only in the high-low group. Four weeks of livinghigh-training low improves sea-level running performance in trainedrunners due to altitude acclimatization (increase in red cell massvolume and O2 max) and maintenance of sea-level training velocities, mostlikely accounting for the increase in velocity atO2 max and MSS.

The number of flowers in the first inflorescence of tomato plantswas increased by low temperatures and reduced by the applicationof GA3. The effect of GA3, was greater in a low temperatureregime (12 °C minimum) than at normal temperatures (16 °Cminimum). Increases in flower number could be produced by theremoval of young developing leaves but the treatment was nolonger effective if plants wen grown at low temperatures orwere treated with GA3. Young developing leaves were shown to be sources of diffusiblegibberellin-like substances. Leaves from plants grown in a normaltemperature regime yielded greater amounts of gibberellin-likesubstances than leaves from plants grown in the low temperatureregime. It is suggested that high levels of endogenous gibberellinsact to reduce the number of flowers formed in the first inflorescence,and that leaf removal and low temperatures influence flowernumbers by lowering levels of diffusible gibberellins in theplants.
