1. Palaeolimnological evidence is presented for the long-term (post-1850) and recent (post-1970) trends in acidity of eleven sites in the U.K. Acid Waters Monitoring Network.
2. Sites are located throughout the U.K. in areas sensitive to acidification, and results show that all have been acidified since pre-industrial times. Although there is considerable variation in the timing and magnitude of these changes the results are consistent with other evidence of the widespread and severe acidification of sensitive U.K. freshwaters as a result of acidic deposition.
3. The most severely acidified sites generally have the highest critical load exceedance, although there is a only a poor relationship between exceedance and post-1850 pH change ( r = 0.58, P = 0.06) or diatom floristic change ( r = 0.52, P = 0.1). These results highlight the difficulty of inferring biological change or 'damage' in freshwater ecosystems from current national maps of critical load exceedances.
4. Evidence of chemical and biological response to the post-1970 reduction in U.K. S emissions is variable: seven lakes show continued acidification in the 1970s and early 1980s while four appear to have been in steady state. One afforested site shows continued acidification until at least 1990, the year of coring, suggesting that at this site increased scavenging of acid anions following canopy closure and/or increased nitrate leaching have offset the benefits of reduced S deposition.
5. Five sites appear to have been in steady state since the early to mid-1980s, and two show unambiguous evidence for a recent increase in pH and a reversal in the diatom assemblages to that of earlier levels. The results support and extend the findings of other studies and show that biological recovery is occurring in at least two chronically acidified areas of the U.K. (Galloway, SW Scotland, and north Wales), and that natural recovery can lead to the re-establishment of biota previously present at the site.  相似文献

We assess the recovery of UK lakes from acidification using the combined data from sediment cores and sediment traps to track changes in diatom assemblages in 11 UK upland lakes from pre-acidification times (prior to ca. 1850 AD) to the present (2008 AD). We projected the data into a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of diatom assemblage data from 121 low-alkalinity lakes in the UK to show how the floristic composition of the core and trap diatom assemblages for each site has changed through time. The results show that the degree of recovery from acidification varies amongst sites but in all cases its extent is limited when compared with the pre-acidification reference. In most cases the recovery, although usually slight, is characterised by a decline in acid tolerant taxa and a return towards taxa that occurred previously at each respective site. In a few cases, however, the floristic composition of recent samples is different from those that occurred during and before the acidification phase. The reasons for this are not yet clear but it is possible that nutrient enrichment from atmospheric N deposition and/or climate change is beginning to play a role in driving water quality as acidity decreases. More generally the results show that annually recovered samples from sediment traps can be successfully combined with sediment core data to provide a continuous record of environmental change in lake systems, and that diatoms collected in sediment traps can be used to provide a very powerful lake monitoring tool.  相似文献

1. The U.K. Acid Waters Monitoring Network (AWMN) was established in 1988. It comprises eleven lake and eleven stream sites located throughout the U.K. in areas sensitive to acidification. The principal objective of the AWMN is to provide a long-term, high-quality chemical, biological and palaeolimnological record which, in conjunction with the U.K. precipitation monitoring networks, will facilitate the assessment of trends within U.K. surface waters.
2. The first interpretation of results generated by the AWMN (April 1988–March 1993) has recently been completed and is summarized. During this period there have been no sustained changes in atmospheric deposition in the U.K. Trends are recognized in certain chemical and/or biological parameters at individual AWMN sites, but despite some (regional) patterns no regional trends toward increasing or decreasing acidification are apparent. The data comprise an excellent baseline with which future changes may be compared.
3. The methodology of the AWMN is reviewed and some amendments are suggested in the light of the first 5 years experience. These include: additional determinations for nitrogen species and total phosphorus; changes to the frequency of macrophyte and palaeolimnological sampling; new emphasis on data generated by sediment traps at lake sites; and the addition of extra sites to address better the full extent of acid-sensitive surface waters revealed by the national critical loads mapping programme, and to pay particular attention to the acidifying role of nitrogen.
4. The contribution of AWMN data to other national and international environmental monitoring programmes is highlighted. In addition, AWMN sites provide data to develop and validate critical loads models and dynamic models of acidification, and could also be used to monitor the impact of other air pollutants such as trace metals and persistent organic compounds on the freshwater environment.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. During the summer of 1987 we conducted an acidification experiment using large enclosure at Emerald Lake, a dilute, high-elevation lake in the Sierra Nevada, California, U.S.A. The experiment was designed to examine the effects of acidification on the zooplankton and zoobenthos assemblages of Sierran lakes.
2. Treatments consisted of a control (pH 6.3) and pH levels of 5.8, 5.4, 5.3, 5.0 and 4.7; each treatment was run in triplicate. The experiment lasted 35 days.
3. The zooplankton assemblage was sensitive to acidification. Daphnia rosea Sars emend. Richard and Diaptomns signicauda Lilljeborg decreased in abundance below pH 5.5–5.8, and virtually disappeared below pH 5.0. Bosmina longirostris (Müller) and Keratella taurocephala Ahlstrom became more abundant with decreasing pH. although B. longirostris was rare in the pH 4.7 treatment. These species might serve as reliable indicators of early acidification in lakes such as Emerald Lake.
4. The elimination of D. rosea in acidified treatments probably allowed the more acid-tolerant taxa to increase in abundance because interspecific competition was reduced. Even slight acidification can therefore alter the structure of the zooplankton assemblage.

Long-term data are often lacking to effectively assess patterns of lake acidification and recovery. Fortunately, paleolimnological techniques can be used to infer past changes in lakewater acidity and related variables by means of biological indicators, such as diatom valves and chrysophyte scales, preserved in 210Pb-dated sediment cores. We summarize paleolimnological data that we have gathered from 36 Sudbury (Ontario) and 20 Adirondack Park (New York) lakes to estimate the magnitude of lake acidification and any subsequent recovery in these lake systems. In both regions, many lakes were shown to have acidified considerably, some over two pH units, since the 1850s. Although some recovery was noted in both lake regions, Sudbury lakes generally showed larger increases in inferred lakewater pH with recent declines in sulfur emissions. Possible explanations of these differences include the greater decrease in sulfate deposition in the Sudbury area, as well as generally longer residence times of lakes in Sudbury, perhaps allowing for more in-lake alkalinity generation. In addition, Sudbury lakes generally had higher pre-industrial pH levels, suggesting that lakes with higher natural buffering capacities are more likely to recover more quickly with declines in deposition, even if they had been acidified to a great extent.  相似文献

Diatom-based paleolimnological techniques were used to study 14 lakes from two regions of Nova Scotia which represent regions of high and low sulphate deposition. Using decadal scale intervals, changes in diatom assemblages and diatom-inferred pH were tracked in relation to deposition of anthropogenic-sourced strong acids. Eight study lakes were located in Kejimkujik National Park in the southwestern part of the province, which receives an annual sulphate deposition (2000–2002) of ~10.5 kg ha−1 yr−1. These lakes showed significant changes in diatom assemblages with overall diatom-inferred acidification of ~0.5 pH units starting between 1925 and 1940, with the timing of acidification related to pre-industrial (or pre−1850) lakewater pH. Six study lakes were located in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, in northern Nova Scotia, a region of lower sulphate deposition. These lakes did not show any consistent trends in diatom assemblages or inferred pH values consistent with recent acidic deposition, but rather variations that may be related to climatic influences. Nova Scotia lakes that have been most impacted by acidic deposition had the lowest pre-industrial lakewater pH values and were in an area of relatively high sulphate deposition. Handling editor: K. Three lakes were studied in the High Tatra Mountains at altitudes from 2000 to 2157 m a.s.l., which represent three categories of acidity status recognised in the Tatra lakes in the 1980s: non-acidified, acidified, and strongly acidified. Subfossil chironomid remains from dated sediment cores covering ca. throughout 200 years were analysed. The chironomid thanatocoenoses of all cores layers reflected ultra-oligotrophic non-acidified conditions in L’adové pleso. Nevertheless, the finding of the acid-tolerant species Zalutschia tatrica in littoral samples in 1980s indicates that the littoral zone was more influenced by acidification than deeper areas of the lake. Three stages of lake developmental history can be distinguished in the acidified lake Vy?né Wahlenbergovo pleso based on the chironomid subfossil record: the pre-acidification stage before the 1920s, the anthropogenic acidification stage between the 1920–1980s, and the recovery of the lake from the end of the 1980s. The period of acidification was accompanied by a decline in chironomid numbers, while chironomid fauna composition was unchanged during the whole investigated history of the lake. None of the chironomid taxa present prior to the acidification period disappeared during the peak of acidification. The most apparent change in the sediment record taken from the strongly acidified lake Starolesnianske pleso was recognised in the layers corresponding to the period 1960–1980. It is characterised by the disappearance of the dominant acid-sensitive Tanytarsus lugens group and the dominance of acidtolerant Tanytarsus gregarius group. The most recent chironomid assemblage probably benefits from the amount of food resources as a result of increased lake productivity induced by acidification.  相似文献

1. Assemblages of epilithic diatoms, macrophytes, benthic macroinvertebrates and fish were monitored over a 5-year period (1988–92) in ten lakes and nine streams in the U.K., as part of the U.K. Acid Waters Monitoring Network. All organisms were categorized according to their functional or morphological characteristics and integrated to describe the food web at each site. In general, the flora and fauna of all sites were typical of oligotrophic, softwater systems subject to various degrees of acidification. 2. Salmonids were the only fish caught at any site and brown trout were the dominant species. With only 5 years of data it was not possible to test for directional changes in fish populations at each site. Among sites, fish density was positively associated with pH, and this did not vary between lake outflows and streams or between fish of different age class (0 +, 1 +). Condition factor, reflecting fish health, was not associated with pH among sites, but was negatively associated with fish density and, on average, was higher for fish in streams than those in lake outflows. 3. Variability in the diatom, macrophyte and invertebrate data sets were quantified in three ways using multivariate techniques: species turnover or replacement (temporal variation due to directional change), persistence (the reciprocal of between-year variability) and within-year variability (heterogeneity between sample replicates). For all groups, turnover was relatively low and persistence was high. The least persistent macrophyte assemblages occurred in stream sites and this may reflect high inter-annual variation in the cover of filamentous algae which are prone to scouring. Within-year variability was higher than turnover or between-year variability for the diatoms and invertebrates, and highest values were recorded for lake invertebrates. 4. Redundancy analysis, RDA, was used to test the diatom, macrophyte, invertebrate and food web data for evidence of directional changes over time and its significance was assessed using Monte Carlo permutation tests. These tests appeared robust to temporal and spatial variability in the data set. Significant trends could be identified in some data sets despite considerable between-replicate and non-linear between-year variability. 5. Significant linear trends in at least one biological group were found at eight lake and seven stream sites. Only one lake and one stream had significant trends in all four groups. These trends represent changes in the flora and/or fauna, but they can be interpreted in several different ways. Only six sites showed trends that were consistent with our knowledge of species’ responses to water chemistry: three indicated increased acidity and three indicated decreased acidity. At only one site were the biological results consistent with observed chemical changes and there was disagreement at the other five. Of the other nine sites that showed biological changes, two appeared to reflect known physical habitat disturbances; the other seven remain unexplained.  相似文献

All nine wetland lakes in the CASSARINA North African suite of sample sites have been disturbed strongly by human activity during the 20th century. Dated lake sediment core were used to provide evidence of the extent of recent environmental change at each site. Sedimentary diatoms at seven sites were useful for inferring salinity change trends during the last century. At two sites preservation problems severely degraded the sedimentary diatom record. Sediment core integrity was otherwise established.Lithostratigraphic measurements indicated some site specific changes in soil erosion and sediment composition but, for the Egyptian Delta lakes, no physical signal synchronous with Aswan High Dam construction was found. Sedimentary diatom assemblages were generally site characteristic and halophilous taxa were common. At two sites planktonic diatoms indicated some recent eutrophication but generally the assemblages were more indicative of salinity changes. Diatom-inferred salinity trends for the seven sites typically indicated that reductions in water salinity occurred sometime during the early or mid 20th century.Rather than climate, hydrological modification of water resources is implicated as the primary driver of salinity changes during most of the 20th century. In the western North African region these modifications were mainly local land drainage and water diversion programmes to alleviate winter flooding and/or promote summer water availability. In the Delta region, the Nile has been intensively exploited since antiquity and intensively so from the late 19th century to release more fresh water for agriculture. Here, diatom records indicate that freshening began well before the Aswan High Dam but salinity fluctuations have tended to diminish during the latter part of the 20th century. A small reversal in the water freshening trend in the 1980/90s was possibly a response to land subsidence/sea-level change or to reduced freshwater supply.Freshwater supply to the sites is generally diminishing as former freshwater surpluses switch to deficit. One site (Merja Bokka, Morocco) became completely dry in 1998 as agriculture encroached and Megene Chitane, the only acid lake in Tunisia, is currently affected by excessive inflow abstraction. At the beginning of the 21st century, eight of the nine CASSARINA sites persist as viable but modified aquatic ecosystems. They nevertheless continue to support valuable aquatic biodiversity, especially in the Delta sites and in Chitane. The modern diatom communities are clearly tolerant of considerable environmental change but the remaining sites are increasingly threatened by major hydrological disturbance. Base-line floristic data for the late 20th century are given but continuous biomonitoring combined with effective management is needed urgently to help conserve North Africa's diminishing natural wetland lake resources.  相似文献

1. Most studies on zooplankton responses to acidification have focused on clearwater lakes with a dramatic acidification history. The role of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in moderating zooplankton responses to acidification in naturally acidic, dystrophic lakes is less well understood and is partially impeded by a lack of baseline data. 2. Cladocera leave identifiable remains preserved in lake sediments that can be used to provide information on pre‐industrial species assemblages and their responses to environmental stressors such as acidification. Therefore, we used palaeolimnological approaches to track cladoceran assemblage responses to acidification since c.1850 (inferred from sedimentary diatom assemblages) in three acidified lakes in Kejimkujik National Park (Nova Scotia, Canada) that differ markedly in DOC content. These include two highly dystrophic lakes (Kejimkujik and Pebbleogittch lakes), and one clearwater lake (Beaverskin Lake). 3. In dystrophic Pebbleogittch Lake, an increase in the acid‐tolerant, jelly‐clad, pelagic taxon Holopedium glacialis occurred coincident with diatom‐inferred pH (DI‐pH) declines, but no other notable cladoceran assemblage shifts occurred. Similarly, Cladocera assemblages did not appear to respond to lakewater acidification in dystrophic Kejimkujik Lake. 4. In contrast, in the clearwater Beaverskin Lake, several observed shifts in cladoceran assemblage corresponded to DI‐pH declines, including an increase in the proportion of littoral taxa and an increase in Hill’s N2 species diversity. This may indicate increased water clarity as a result of acidification‐related decreases in DOC, which may have enhanced growth of emergent aquatic macrophytes and improved visibility for planktivorous fish, leading to increased predation on pelagic taxa. Species shifts within the littoral assemblage of Beaverskin Lake may reflect the differing tolerances of littoral taxa to low pH and aluminium toxicity. 5. Overall, our results suggest that cladoceran assemblages in naturally acidic, dystrophic lakes may be resilient against additional pH declines related to industrial emissions of acidifying agents, as dystrophic lakes are less vulnerable to increased aluminium toxicity and acidification‐induced increases in water clarity and often have a pre‐industrial cladoceran assemblage already adapted to acidic conditions.  相似文献

1. Lake 302S in the Experimental Lakes Area of Canada was acidified from pH 6.7 (1981) to 5.1 (1986). The pH was further reduced to 4.5 in 1987 and held at that level until 1991. From 1992 to 1995, the pH was allowed to increase to a target value of 5.8.
2. The response of the phytoplankton community to decreasing pH from 6.0 to 5.1 was similar to that observed in another experimentally acidified lake (223) and in other atmospherically acidified lakes. Acidification affected species diversity of both the phytoplankton and epilithon. Phytoplankton diversity was positively correlated with pH. Epilithic algal diversity was more variable and did not correlate with pH.
3. Phytoplankton biomass was enhanced by acidification as the assemblage shifted from a dominance of chrysophytes to large dinoflagellates ( Gymnodinium sp. and Peridinium inconspicuum ). Epilithon biomass was unaffected, but dominance shifted from filamentous cyanophytes ( Lyngbya ) to acidophilic diatoms ( Tabellaria quadriseptata and Anomoeonis brachysira ).
4. The only taxon to be similarly affected in both the phytoplankton and epilithon was the cyanobacteria, being significantly reduced below pH 5.1. During early recovery (pH 5.5–5.8), cyanobacteria increased and species present prior to acidification recolonized both habitats.
5. In the early stages of recovery, planktonic and benthic assemblages remained more similar to acidified than natural assemblages, but more profound change began at pH > 5.5.  相似文献

Acidification of the endosomal pathway is important for ligand and receptor sorting, toxin activation, and protein degradation by lysosomal acid hydrolases. Fluorescent probes and imaging methods were developed to measure pH to better than 0.2 U accuracy in individual endocytic vesicles in Swiss 3T3 fibroblasts. Endosomes were pulse labeled with transferrin (Tf), alpha 2-macroglobulin (alpha 2M), or dextran, each conjugated with tetramethylrhodamine and carboxyfluorescein (for pH 5-8) or dichlorocarboxyfluorescein (for pH 4-6); pH in individual labeled vesicles was measured by ratio imaging using a cooled CCD camera and novel image analysis software. Tf-labeled endosomes acidified to pH 6.2 +/- 0.1 with a t1/2 of 4 min at 37 degrees C, and remained small and near the cell periphery. Dextran- and alpha 2M-labeled endosomes acidified to pH 4.7 +/- 0.2, becoming larger and moving toward the nucleus over 30 min; approximately 15% of alpha 2M-labeled endosomes were strongly acidic (pH less than 5.5) at only 1 min after labeling. Replacement of external Cl by NO3 or isethionate strongly and reversibly inhibited acidification. Addition of ouabain (1 mM) at the time of labeling strongly enhanced acidification in the first 5 min; Tf-labeled endosomes acidified to pH 5.3 without a change in morphology. Activation of phospholipase C by vasopressin (50 nM) enhanced acidification of early endosomes; activation of protein kinase C by PMA (100 nM) enhanced acidification strongly, whereas elevation of intracellular Ca by A23187 (1 microM) had no effect on acidification. Activation of protein kinase A by CPT-cAMP (0.5 mM) or forskolin (50 microM) inhibited acidification. Lysosomal pH was not affected by ouabain or the protein kinase activators. These results establish a methodology for quantitative measurement of pH in individual endocytic vesicles, and demonstrate that acidification of endosomes labeled with Tf and alpha 2M (receptor-mediated endocytosis) and dextran (fluid-phase endocytosis) is sensitive to intracellular anion composition, Na/K pump inhibition, and multiple intracellular second messengers.  相似文献

The determination of the history and causes of recent eutrophication and intensified thermal stratification in Lake Victoria is still hampered by the sparsity of paleolimnologic coverage of the enormous lake. Five new diatom records from Ugandan waters now show that a transition from Aulacoseira-dominated planktonic assemblages to those dominated by long Nitzschia spp., occurred in northern coastal sites from the mid-1970s to mid-1980s. Similar transitions developed from the late 1960s to early 1970s offshore and from the 1940s to early 1950s along the Kenyan coast, suggesting a time-transgressive process. These changes are not readily attributable to the trophic effects of Nile perch population growth during the early 1980s, but more likely reflect responses to long-term nutrient enrichment and climatic instability in the region. The diversity of planktonic diatom communities has declined dramatically, and a namesake variety of Aulacoseira nyassensis may now be nearly extirpated. Although local phytoplankton communities varied considerably in the past, the current domination of diatom assemblages by Nitzschia is apparently unprecedented in the 15,000-year history of Lake Victoria.  相似文献

Critical soil acidification loads (CL) and related exceedances, base cation leaching, N leaching, and forest biomass growth were evaluated for a well-studied deciduous forest site within the Turkey Lake Watershed (TLW). The assessment was done by way of steady-state mass balance considerations of primary inputs for N, Ca, Mg, and K. Critical soil acidification rates were found to be high at TLW. These rates amounted to about 900 or 1400 eq/(ha yr) depending on the forest harvesting regime (selective harvest or maintainence of old-growth condition, respectively). The TLW soil substrate (till derived from basaltic bedrock) appeared to weather well, thereby buffering against natural and anthropogenic soil acidification. As a consequence, soil acidification exceedances were estimated to be relatively low for both the selective harvest and old-growth scenarios. In comparing overall S and N input/output data (atmospheric deposition data vs soil leaching losses), we found that the TLW site was essentially near or at S and N saturation. We also found that atmospheric deposition and soil leaching rates have been declining since about 1980. The figures for CL and exceedance varied to some extent depending on the quality of input data and related uncertainties. Estimated exceedances were increased when dry- as well as wet-deposition rates were considered. They varied depending on the yearly sulfate/nitrate/base-cation mix, and the definition of “acceptable acid leaching.” In addition, they were dependent on whether the forest was considered old growth or not. The extraction of bitumen from the Athabasca oil sands is rapidly expanding, and emission of sulphur and nitrogen oxides has substantially increased. To determine whether lakes downwind of this development in northwest Saskatchewan have been detrimentally impacted since development of the oil sands, a paleolimnological assessment of ten lakes was carried out. Analysis of diatom valves and inferences of diatom-inferred pH indicated that emissions have not resulted in widespread chronic acidification of acid-sensitive lakes ~80–250 km east and northeast of the oil sands development around Fort McMurray and Fort Mackay. However, one of the closest sites to the development indicated a slight decline in diatom-inferred pH, but the two next closest sites, both of which had higher alkalinity, did not show any evidence of acidification. There were also no consistent trends in the concentration or flux of total or individual priority pollutants including lead, mercury, copper, zinc and vanadium. The sedimentation rates in most lakes increased since the mid-1900s, along with increased flux of both diatoms and scaled chrysophytes. Subtle changes in the species assemblages of diatoms and increased flux of diatoms and chrysophyte scales are consistent with recent climate change in this region.  相似文献

1. The diatom Didymosphenia geminata has emerged in recent years as a globally invasive species. Although considered native to North America, reports of nuisance blooms have increased over the last decade.
2. Previously, we determined that D. geminata was ubiquitous in two major headwaters of the South Saskatchewan River Basin (SSRB), Alberta, Canada, but found it only bloomed at certain sites, including those immediately downstream from dam outfalls. To evaluate the role of dams in the abundance and blooming of D. geminata , we compared sites just below dams to unregulated upstream reference sites in six dammed rivers of the SSRB.
3. There was a high degree of seasonal variability in D. geminata abundance among sites, but statistical analyses showed a significant propensity for the diatom to have higher cell densities and an increased frequency of blooms at dam sites.
4. Important predictor variables of D. geminata abundance included dam presence, water clarity and total phosphorus concentration. When data from dam sites were analysed, a multiple regression model using mean discharge and pH as independent predictors explained 73% of the variation in D. geminata cell density.
5. Analysis of 3 years of data from one study river (Red Deer River) revealed consistently higher D. geminata cell densities at the dam site compared to the upstream reference. This analysis also showed that average cell density fluctuated by orders of magnitude from year-to-year.
6. Due to the ecological and aesthetic concerns regarding the global spread and blooming of D. geminata , we recommend that dams be viewed as key candidates for mitigating blooms in flow regulated systems.  相似文献

1. The current extent and distribution of acidified surface waters in the U.K. is assessed using data collected between 1988 and 1993 as part of the U.K. Acid Waters Monitoring Network (AWMN). The data have been collected against a background of constant S deposition across the U.K. throughout the monitoring period. 2. Surface waters with mean pH < 5.0 occur in south-west Scotland, south-east Northern Ireland, the Lake District and south-east England. In addition, sites with mean pH < 5.5 are found in central and north-east Scotland, the Pennines and north Wales. These areas receive, and have historically received, high levels of S deposition and xSO4 is identified as the main contribution to non-marine acid anion concentrations. 3. Mean total oxidized nitrogen (TON) concentrations are > 10 μeq l–1 at ten of the twenty-two sites which are found in areas broadly corresponding to areas of high N deposition. The mean contribution of TON to total non-marine acid anion concentration is > 10% at sixteen sites and > 20% at six sites. Most sites, except for those with TON < 10 μeq l–1 and mainly located in north-west Scotland and Northern Ireland, demonstrate strong seasonality in TON concentrations and during autumn and winter instantaneous contributions of TON to total non-marine acid anions is up to 60%. This confirms the importance of N with respect to surface water acidification and strengthens the case for implementation of controls on future N emissions. 4. The data period is currently too short for rigorous trend analysis given the monthly/quarterly sampling frequency in streams/lakes, respectively. Nevertheless, increased SO4 and xSO4 can be observed in the time series at sites in south-west Scotland and north Wales despite constant deposition to these areas. Similar trends are evident in longer-term more frequent data at two sites and may reflect hydrometeorological influences, especially the duration and intensity of hot and dry weather in summer which promotes mineralization of organic S.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The paper describes diatom communities from a series of linked urban lakes in relation to water chemistry and uses multivariate statistical techniques to show how indicator groups can he defined.
2. Diatoms are classified into ecological groups using two-way species indicator analysis (TWINSPAN). Each ecological group is associated with a specific range of water-quality conditions. The headwater stream environments are differentiated from the lake habitats at level 1. At level 2 of TWINSPAN. the sampling sites are grouped into five ecological groups, according to their water chemistry and irrespective of the time of year.
3. Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and principal components analysis (PCA) provide two statistically independent methods of assessing the environmental gradients along which the ecological groups are distributed. The most important physico-chemical parameters are total hardness, specific conductance and pH, followed by phosphates and nitrates.
4. Ecological groups I-V correspond to an environmental gradient ranging from the forested headwaters, which are acidic, of low specific conductance, total hardness and nutrient content, through the urban lakes, which are alkaline and of relatively high total hardness, specific conductance and nutrient content.
5. Twelve site groups are identified at level 3 of TWINSPAN, each of which corresponds to a narrower range of water-quality conditions within the ecological groupings. A specific diatom assemblage is associated with each site group.
6. Benthic diatoms form an integral part of the diatom assemblages found in the water column and this is identified as a topic for further study.  相似文献

Floodplain lakes along the lower River Murray are subject to a wide range of human impacts including regulation, abstraction, elevated saline groundwater tables, increased nutrient and sediment fluxes and introduced biota. These perturbations are superimposed on those arising from high inter-annual rainfall variability, driven, at least in part, by variations in the southern oscillation. Sediment-based archives from two lakes within a complex of wetlands, situated near to the first site of irrigation development in the lower River Murray, reveal substantial changes over the last 800 years. While high levels of salinity are not foreign to the sites, the recent trend is towards sustained high salinity levels. As a result of European impact, freshwater diatom plankton now dominates Loch Luna, whilst Loveday Wetland is both more saline and nutrient rich than in the pre-European period. In Loveday Wetland, the post-1960 increase in Haslea spicula (Hickie) Lange-Bertalot, may be driven by increases in sulphur salt concentrations that are believed to be a cause of recent acidification episodes. A recent increase in more salt tolerant diatoms in Loch Luna suggests that this site, which has been largely buffered from substantial change, is becoming more vulnerable to perturbation.
