The Gulf of Paria receives heavy metal input from urban runoff, industrial and agricultural activity, sewage and domestic wastes: both from the west coast and from inland areas of Trinidad. Non-residual concentrations of nine metals, as well as total mercury concentrations, were used to determine spatial distributions of heavy metals in sediments in the Gulf of Paria. Surficial sediment samples were collected at 37 stations, which included the mouths of 11 major rivers that flow into the Gulf of Paria. Stations were sampled twice during the wet season (July 1998 and November/ December 1998) and twice during the dry season (March 1999 and April 1999). Sediments were analyzed for aluminium (Al), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn) and mercury (Hg). Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and grain size analyses were also performed on the sediments. Principal component analysis showed that sediments from river mouths subject to greatest land use and anthropogenic input, were distinct from other sediments in the Gulf of Paria. This was due to higher Pb, Zn, Cu and Hg concentrations (3.53-73.30 microg g(-1), 45.8-313.9 microg g(-1), 8.43-39.71 microg g(-1) and 0.03-0.10 microg g(-1), respectively). Sediments further from the coast were also distinct due to their higher Al, Fe, Cr and Mn concentrations (1.37-3.16 mg g(-1), 9.51-18.91 mg g(-1) , 17.22-28.41 microg g(-1) and 323.6-1,564.2 microg g(-1), respectively). Cd and Pb were higher in the wet season while Ni was higher in the dry season. Pb, Zn, Cu and Hg were correlated with each other and with TOC. Correlation was also observed between Al, Fe, Cr, Mn and Ni. Al, Fe, Cr and Mn were correlated with percentage clay in sediments. The results suggest that Pb, Zn, Cu and Hg are preferentially removed by organic matter, which settles at the river-mouths, while Al, Fe, Cr, Mn, and Ni become associated with clay minerals and are transported away from the coast.

Heavy metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) concentrations were determined by ICP-AES in Ostrea equestris from three beaches (Barra do Furado, Buena, and Ponta do Retiro) on the northern coast of Rio de Janeiro State. The average concentration was 0.8 +/- 0.18, 0.4 +/- 0.21, 58 +/- 25.6, 249 +/- 52.3, 11 +/- 1.31, 0.55 +/- 0.16, 0.13 +/- 0.11, and 1131 +/- 321 microg x g(-1) dry weight for Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn respectively. Significant spatial variation (p < 0.05) between the samples areas occurred for Cr, Pb, and Zn with higher values in Barra do Furado; and for Cu in Ponta do Retiro. Significant temporal variations (p < 0.05) were observed for all metals except Cu. Temporal variability may be related to changes in the inputs of metals associated with suspended particles. Concentrations were similar to those found in areas under low pollution impact, except for Zn, the high concentrations of which probably reflect the physiological characteristics of these organisms.

We analysed the concentrations of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in the water, sediments, fish and plants of the River Hindon, U.P., India, at seven sampling stations, in the year 1982. Considerable variation in concentration between water, sediments, fish and plants were noted. The concentration in the water was in the order Fe > Zn > Cr > Mn > Cu > Pb > Ni > Co > Cd, in the sediments, Fe > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cr > - Co > Cu > Pb > Cd; in a fish (Heteropnuestes fossilis) Fe > Zn > Mn > Pb > Ni > Co > Cu > Cd > Cr, and in a plant (Eicchornia crassipes) Fe > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cu > Cr > Pb > Co > Cd.

The objective of this study was to determine the heavy-metal concentrations (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Mn, Fe, As, Cd, Cr, and Hg), evaluate the pollution levels, and determine the concentration of chlorophyll-a and organic carbon in the surface sediments of the Uzunçay?r Dam Lake, Tunceli, Turkey, between 2015 and 2016. In order to evaluate the effect of the pollution level in the study area, the contamination factor (CF), enrichment factor, potential ecological risk index, and pollution load index were used. The concentrations of the studied heavy metals were ordered as follows: Fe > Mn > Ni > Cr > Zn > Cu > Pb > As > Cd > Hg. The highest CF value was found for the Ni element among the studied heavy metals in the Dam Lake. Moreover, the highest CF mean value was found for the As contamination level. According to the toxicity analyses in the study area, the potential toxic effect of sediments was not at a very serious level.

The extractable contents of Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Fe and Al were evaluated in sediments from the Lis River (Portugal) using the three-step sequential extraction procedure described by Community Bureau of Reference (BCR, now the Standards, Measurement and Testing Programme) of the European Union. The distribution of trace metals among the exchangeable, water and acid soluble, reducible, oxidizable and residual fractions was determined. The highest metal concentrations were observed in samples collected at the most polluted river sites (animal husbandry, domestic, industrial and agricultural wastes). Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni, Fe and Al were found mainly associated with the residual and organic fractions. High concentrations of Zn and Mn were found in the exchangeable/acid soluble fraction.

Superficial (0 to 2 cm) sediments were sampled from 62 sites in Kattegat and Skagerrak during autumn 1989 and spring 1990, tested for toxicity to Daphnia magna and Nitocra spinipes (Crustacea) and analyzed for heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, N, Pb, Zn), nutrients (N and P) and organic carbon. Whole sediment toxicity to Nitocra spinipes, expressed as 96-h LC50, ranged from 1.8 to > > 32 percent sediment (wet wt), which is equivalent to 0.63 to 53 percent dry wt. Sediment total metal concentrations (mg kg-1 dry wt) ranged from 0.01 to 0.32 for Cd, 8 to 57 for Cr, 3 to 40 for Cu, 0.03 to 0.86 for Hg, 3 to 43 for Ni, 6 to 37 for Pb and 21 to 156 for Zn. Analyzed concentrations of heavy metals were tested for correlation with whole sediment toxicity normalized to dry wt, and significant correlations (Spearman p<0.05) were found for Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, and Ni. However, the analyzed concentrations of these metals were below the spiked sediment toxicity of these heavy metals to N. spinipes, except for Cr and Zn for which analyzed maximum concentrations approached the 96-h spiked sediment LC50s. There was no improvement in correlation between the sum of heavy metal concentrations normalized to their spiked toxic concentrations (Toxic Unit approach) and the whole sediment toxicity. Calculated heavy-metal-derived toxicity based on toxic units and whole sediment toxicity ranged from 0.1 to 24 (mean value 2.3 and SD 4.2). Theoretically, a value of 1.0 would explain whole sediment toxicity from measured metal concentrations using this approach. Thus, in spite of the fact that the total concentrations of the heavy metals were sufficient to cause toxicity based on an additive model for most of these sediments, the observed toxicity of the sediments from Kattegat and Skagerrak could not exclusively be explained by the concentrations of heavy metals, except for Cr and Zn at their maximum concentrations. Therefore, other pollutants than these heavy metals must also be considered as possible sediment toxicants.

We aimed to identify the environmental factors which significantly affect metal uptake by reed plants in the intertidal marshes along the river Scheldt. Transfer coefficients, defined as the ratio of metal concentrations in reed stems to the metal contents in specific sediment fractions (i.e. the exchangeable Cd and Zn fraction and total Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb content), were calculated for each sampling site. They were inversely related to the sediment clay and/or organic matter content. Metal mobility and thus plant availability is higher in sediments with a lower clay or organic matter content. Moreover, the plants might actively accumulate in particular essential elements when concentrations in the sediments are rather low, which is the case in sediments low in clay and organic matter contents. Finally, more sandy sediments are expected to be susceptible to occasional oxidation of sulphides, which leads to an increased metal availability. A higher salinity promoted the uptake of Cu, Cr and Zn.

In a study of a large fluvial lake (Lake St. Pierre, St. Lawrence River system, Québec), we have determined the biomass of the submerged vegetation (dominated by Vallisneria americana and Potamogeton spp) during the peak seasonal biomass (August) and senescence (October), and have estimated the content of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in the above-ground portions of these plants. Multispectral remote sensing data (MEIS-II) were used to extrapolate from point measures of biomass (g m−2) to the entire area of the lake (Lavoie et al., 1991). By combining field information (biomass values and metal concentrations) with the more extensive remote sensing data base of biomass values, and by using geostatistical estimation techniques (kriging), we have estimated the seasonal storage of metals in Lake St. Pierre plants to be: 30 kg Cd, 89 kg Cr, 450 kg Cu, 280 kg Ni, 71 kg Pb and 2200 kg Zn. During the seasonal biomass peak, the quantities of Cd, Pb and Zn stored in the plants were higher than those dissolved in the water column, but much lower than those present in the surficial, recent sediments. Mass balance calculations for the summer months indicated that the ‘macrophyte’ compartment represented only a small proportion of the metals entering the lake: Cu and Ni, <1%; Cd and Zn, 2%; Pb, 4%. Senescence and the downstream drifting of plant material noted in October suggested that most of the metals associated with the above-ground parts of the submerged vegetation were not recycled within the lake, but instead were exported at the end of the summer.

Abstract

One hundred and twenty topsoil (0–20?cm layer) samples and 45 surface sediment samples were collected from the riparian area and bottom of Qinggeda Lake. The content of Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, Mn, V, and As were determined to reveal the distribution characteristics and explore the spatial dependency relationship between environmental factors (pH, conductivity, and organic matter) and heavy metals using Kriging interpolation and the geographical weighted regression model. Results showed as follows: (1) The average contents of Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, V, and As did not exceed the Standard of National Soil Environmental Quality. However, Cu, Cr, and V were higher than the Xinjiang soil background. (2) The target elements in the surface sediments of the lake showed a decreasing trend from the center of the lake to the shore. Also, the heavy metal concentrations in the eastern part of the lake shore were significantly higher than those in other areas, and the highest concentrations appeared in the paddy field. (3) The effects of the eight heavy metals on pH, conductivity, and organic matter displayed significant spatial nonstationary characteristics. Cr, As, Cu, and Zn are the primary factors that affect environmental characteristics such as pH, conductivity, and organic matter content.

Concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cd, Ni, Cu, Cr, and Mn were determined to assess the impact of automobiles on heavy metal contamination of roadside soil. Soil samples at four polluted sites and a control site were collected at a depth of 0, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30?cm. A comparison of elemental levels between polluted and control sites exhibited exceptionally higher concentrations at the former sites. The Pb levels in polluted sites varied from 70 to 280.5?µgg?1and it rapidly decreased with depth. Similarly, mean concentrations of Zn, Cd, Ni, Cu, Cr, and Mn were significantly higher at polluted sites and followed a decreasing trend with the increase in depth. Correlation coefficients between heavy metals and traffic density were positively significant except for nickel. Profile samples showed that Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, and Mn were largely concentrated in the top 5?cm confirming airborne contamination. The vertical movement and partitioning of metals, except Ni and Cr, exhibited predominant association with soil pH and organic carbon. The results have been presented using Heavy Metal Index.

The distribution of Cd, Pb, Ni, Cr, Cu, Mn, Fe, and Zn in sediment and surface water, and some physico-chemical characteristics of Orogodo river sediments, were evaluated. The sediment pH ranged from 5.1–7.3; conductivity values ranged from 34.5 to 389.0 μScm?1. Total nitrogen values ranged from 0.06–0.10%, NH3-N values ranged from 0.25–0.44 mgkg?1, percent total organic carbon ranged from 0.21–1.68%, and total phosphorus values ranged from 0.004–0.02% for dry and wet seasons. The sand fraction consists of 87–95%, silt fractions ranged from 0–2%, and clay fraction between 4–13%. The mean concentrations of metals (dry weight basis) in the streambed sediments ranged from 1.92–17.37 mgkg?1 for Cu, 0.98–4.78 mgkg?1 for Ni, 0.01–32.98 mgkg?1 for Mn, 353.22–2045.64 mgkg?1 for Fe, 69.96–100.16 mgkg?1 for Zn, 0.21–1.32 mgkg?1 for Cr, and Cd was less than 0.001 mgkg?1 for wet and dry seasons. The mean concentrations of metals in the surface water ranged between 0.01–0.05–0.05 mg/L for Cu, nd-0.11 mg/L for Ni, 0.001–0.31 mg/L for Pb, 0.001–1.82 mg/L Mn, 0.01–3.52 mg/L for Fe, 0.16–0.61 mg/L for Zn, nd-0.007 mg/L for Cr, and <0.001 mg/L for Cd. Based on principal component analysis, two main sources of metals in the Orogodo River can be identified: (i) Cr, Cu, Pb, and Fe are mainly derived from industrial sources; (ii) Mn, Zn, and Ni associated with traffic activities. No element examined had a contamination/pollution index value greater than unity (pollution ranges). This implies that the multiple pollution indices obtained from the analysis showed that Orogodo River sediments were not polluted with heavy metals.

The concentrations of major (Al, Fe, Mg, Ti, K and Na) and minor (Ba, Sr, V, Cu, Mn, Cr, Ni, Zn, Pb and Mo) elements as well as carbonate, organic carbon and total nitrogen have been determined in surface sediments collected at 12 stations from the Bardawil lagoon. The aim of the study was to characterize the geochemistry of the sediments in three different environments, the lagoon, the salt pans and the inlet between the lagoon and the Mediterranean Sea. Higher CaCO3 percentage (53.5–70.5%) were found in the salt pans where biogenic calcareous components and carbonate rock fragments were found in sufficient quantities in the sediment fractions. Based on high C/N ratios, the organic carbon fraction of the Bardawil lagoon surface sediments is clearly dominated by terrigenous material. The distribution of Al, Fe, Mg and Ti are essentially controlled by the mineralogy of the sediments. The ratios of Ba, Sr, Cu, Mn, Pb and Mo to Al are all high in the salt pans and reflect changes in mineralogy and sediment texture.

Investigation of the spatial distribution of metals was conducted for two constructed wetlands used as tertiary treatment in Chia Nan University of Pharmacy and Science (CNU) and Metal Processing Industries (MPI) located in Tainan, Taiwan. These two distinguished sites were selected to compare the distribution of metals for constructed wetlands treating different types of wastewater. Along the distance, samples of water, sediment, and macrophytes were analyzed for metals including Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. Additionally, measurements of water quality including temperature, pH, EC, ORP, DO, TSS, BOD, COD, and turbidity were performed. Results show that, at CNU, wastewater contained higher organic consititute (BOD 29.3 +/- 11.7 mg/, COD 46.7 +/- 33.6 mg/L) with low metals content. Wastewater at MPI contained low level of organic consititute (BOD 7.1 +/- 3.3 mg/L, and COD 66.0 +/- 56.5 mg/L) and higher metals content. Metals distribution of both sites showed similar results where metals in the sediments in the inlet zone have greater concentrations than other areas. The constructed wetlands can remove Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. However, there was no removal of Al, Cr, Fe, and Mn. A distance along the constructed wetlands had no effect on metal concentrations in macrophyte and water.

The concentrations of nine metals were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in surface sediments of three coastal creeks, namely, the Ifie, Egbokodo and Ubeji creeks, in the Niger Delta of Nigeria, from August 2012 to January 2013. The aim of the study was to provide information on the spatial and seasonal distribution patterns, degree of contamination, and ecological risks of metals in these sediments. The mean concentrations of the nine metals in these creek sediments ranged from 0.30 to 3.20?mg kg?1 Cd; 10.7 to 24.7?mg kg?1 Pb, 125 to 466?mg kg?1 Cr; 3.1.10 to 14.9?mg kg?1 Cu; 4.7 to 14.3?mg kg?1 Co; 61.1 to 115?mg kg?1 Ni; 106 to 183?mg kg?1 Mn; 52.0 to 170?mg kg?1 Zn and 5 469 to 20 639?mg kg?1 Fe. In general, the metal concentrations were higher in the dry season than the wet season, except for Cr. The concentrations of Cd, Cr, Ni and Zn were above their regulatory control limits in sediment as specified by the Nigerian Regulatory Authority and Cd was identified as the main ecological risk factor. The enrichment factors for the studied metals followed the order: Cd > Cr > Ni > Zn > Pb > Co > Mn > Cu. The average multiple pollution index values indicated that these sediments were severely polluted with significant inputs from Cd, Ni and Cr.

Xijiang River is the main surface water source in Guangxi province, South China. This study was carried out to investigate the distribution and potential ecological risks of seven heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Cd, Ni, and Cr) in surface sediments in Xijiang River basin. The results illustrated that the average concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cd, Cu, As, Ni, and Cr were 483.9, 207.5, 13.35, 23.50, 312.1, 28.75, and 50.62 mg/kg, respectively. Among them, Zn, Pb, Cd, and As were the major heave metals with concentration exceeding Class 3 threshold value of Chinese national standard. The result also showed samples with high ecological risk were mainly located in the upstream of Xijiang River basin as Diaojiang River, Hongshui River, Jincheng River, and Dahuan River. Based on the pollution risk assessment, the area manifested composite pollution of heavy metals in the sediments, signifying As, Pb, and Cd as the dominant heavy metals, and there were high ecological risk in sediments for these metals. According to correlation matrix and factor analysis (FA), the seven heavy metals were divided into three types/classes, Cd, as and Zn attributed by anthropogenic sources, natural sources corresponds for Ni and Cr while both natural and anthropogenic sources were attributed to Cu.

Trace metals concentrations in sediments from the Egyptian Mediterranean coast were determined to evaluate the levels of contamination. The highest concentrations of metals were generally found in the middle region of the coast. Sediment pollution assessment was carried out using Enrichment Factor (EF), Geoaccumulation Factor (Igeo), Contamination Factor (CF), Modified Degree of Contamination (mCd), and Pollution Load Index (PLI). Association of adverse effects to aquatic life was determined using the classification of sediments according to three sets of sediment quality guidelines. The mean EF values were found to fall in the following sequence: Cr > Pb > Ni > Zn > Cu > Mn. The results demonstrated that the EF of metals in the sediments of the middle region was lower than those recorded in the western region and Rafah Station at the eastern region; the difference in the EF levels was significantly correlated with Fe concentrations along the study area. Based on the average Igeo of target elements, the Egyptian Mediterranean coast could be considered not polluted with Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn (Igeo ≤ 0). The modified degree of contamination was >1.5, indicating zero to very low contamination. The calculated PLI were less than 1, indicating only baseline levels of pollution. There were small differences between the results obtained with the three used SQGs. Highly significant correlations were found between the concentrations of Fe, Mn, Co, Cr, and Ni, suggesting similar sources and/or similar geochemical processes controlling the occurrence of these metals in the sediments.

Selected trace metals were analyzed in human malignant and nonmalignant (benign) breast tissue samples by the flame atomic absorption spectrophotometric method. In malignant tissues, dominant mean concentrations were revealed by Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, and Al at 927, 552, 231, 61.7, 36.5, 18.3, and 8.94 microg/g, respectively, while the mean metal levels in benign tissues were 903, 435, 183, 63.3, 24.7, 14.5, and 10.1 microg/g, respectively. Average concentrations of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, K, Ca, and Zn were noted to be significantly higher in the malignant tissues compared with the benign tissues. Significantly strong correlations (r > 0.50) in malignant tissues were observed between Mn and Co, Mn and Cd, Cd and Cr, Fe and Mn, Cd and Co, Fe and Co, Mg and Pb, Cd and Fe, Mg and Ni, Pb and Ni, Ni and Sr, and Fe and Pb, whereas, Cd and Co, Cd and Mn, Co and Mg, Co and Mn, Cu and Mn, Co and Ni, Mg and Ni, Cd and Cu, Cd and Ni, Ca and Mg, Mn and Pb, Cu and Ni, Fe and Ni, Cd and Mg, Co and Cu, Cr and Na, and Cd and Cr revealed strong and significant relationships in benign tissues at p < 0.001. Principal component analysis of the metals data yielded six principal components for malignant tissues and five principal components for benign tissues, with considerably different loadings, duly supported by cluster analysis. The study revealed a considerably different pattern of distribution and mutual correlations of trace metals in the breast tissues of benign and cancerous patients.

The Gulf of Cariaco is a marine ecosystem with high primary productivity, which gives it an ecological and socioeconomic importance. Nevertheless, anthropogenic activities around the Gulf produce wastes that are deposited directly or by runoff into the sediments, and consequently, increases concentrations of metals in this ecosystem. The objective of this study was to determine the distribution of cadmium, copper, lead, manganese, nickel and zinc in geochemical fractions of surface sediments, using modified BCR sequential extraction procedure. The concentrations were measured using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. In addition, the contents of soluble and exchangeable metals associated to carbonate fractions, determined by BCR, were compared with those determined by the method of Campanella. Samples were collected in 12 stations during June 2007. The applied methodologies were evaluated with a certified reference material of marine sediments (HISS-1) and the results indicated that these methods provide adequate accuracy and precision for the extraction of metals. The total metal concentrations (microg g(-1)) were, Cd: < limit of detection (LD)-5.0; Pb: 1.79-60.41; Cu: no detected (ND)-42.18; Zn: 25.13-104.57; Mn: 66.31-80.29 and Ni: 3.29-24.58. Cd, Cu, Ni and Pb at several stations, exceeded the Canadian Sediment Quality Guidelines of the Lowest Effect Levels (LEL). Cadmium was identified as being the most mobile of the elements, having the highest concentrations in soluble and exchangeable cations and carbonates. However, Pb, Cu, Mn and Zn levels were found highly associated to organic matter and sulfide fractions. The methods did not show significant statistical differences for the extraction of soluble and exchangeable cations and the metals associated to carbonate fraction. There are several significant correlations between heavy metals, which suggest their common origin.
