Selenium (Se) content of feedstuffs is dependent on the Se level of the soil. Even though Se in grass and forage crops is primarily present in organic forms, Se is commonly supplemented in cattle diets in an inorganic (sodium selenite) form in geographic regions where Se soil concentrations are low. The purpose of this study was to answer two important questions about inorganic (ISe) vs organic (OSe) forms of dietary supplementation of Se (3?mg/day) to growing beef heifers (0.5?kg/day): (1) what would the effect of supplementing Se with an equal blend of ISe:OSe (Mix) have on Se tissue concentrations and (2) how long does it take for the greater assimilation with OSE to occur and stabilize? A long-term (224?day) Se dietary supplementation trial was conducted with serial sampling performed (days?28, 56, 112, and 224) to determine the length of time required to achieve Se supplement (OSE, Mix, and ISe)-dependent changes in Se assimilation in blood fractions and liver tissue. Forty maturing Angus heifers were fed a corn silage-based diet for 98?days with no Se supplementation, and then a cracked corn/cottonseed hull-based diet (basal diet) without Se supplementation for 74?days. Liver biopsies were taken for Se analysis, and heifers were fed the same diet for another 14?days. Heifers were assigned (n?=?10) to one of four Se treatment groups such that basal liver Se contents were stratified among groups, and then fed enough of the basal diet (0.08?mg Se per day) and a mineral-vitamin mix that provided 0.16 (control) or 3.0?mg Se per day in ISe (sodium selenite), OSe (Sel-Plex(?)), or Mix (1:1 ISe:OSe) form to support 0.5?kg/day growth for 224?days. More Se was found in whole blood, red blood cells, serum, and liver of Mix and OSe heifers than ISe heifers, and all were greater than control. Se content either increased until day?56 then was stable (liver and plasma), or was stable until day?56 (whole blood) or day?112 (red blood cells) and then increased steadily through day?224, for all supplemental Se treatments. These data indicate that a 1:1 mix (1.5?mg Se:1.5?mg Se) of supplemental ISe and OSe is equal to 3?mg/day OSe supplementation and greater than 3?mg/day ISe supplementation. The data also indicate that Se levels stabilized in liver and plasma by 56 to 112?days whereas whole blood and red blood cell concentrations were still increasing through 224?days of supplementation, regardless of the form of supplemental Se.  相似文献

In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a large number of genes in the RAD52 epistasis group has been implicated in the repair of chromosomal double-strand breaks and in both mitotic and meiotic homologous recombination. While most of these genes are essential for yeast mating-type (MAT) gene switching, neither RAD50 nor XRS2 is required to complete this specialized mitotic gene conversion process. Using a galactose-inducible HO endonuclease gene to initiate MAT switching, we have examined the effect of null mutations of RAD50 and of XRS2 on intermediate steps of this recombination event. Both rad50 and xrs2 mutants exhibit a marked delay in the completion of switching. Both mutations reduce the extent of 5'-to-3' degradation from the end of the HO-created double-strand break. The steps of initial strand invasion and new DNA synthesis are delayed by approximately 30 min in mutant cells. However, later events are still further delayed, suggesting that XRS2 and RAD50 affect more than one step in the process. In the rad50 xrs2 double mutant, the completion of MAT switching is delayed more than in either single mutant, without reducing the overall efficiency of the process. The XRS2 gene encodes an 854-amino-acid protein with no obvious similarity to the Rad50 protein or to any other protein in the database. Overexpression of RAD50 does not complement the defects in xrs2 or vice versa.  相似文献

In order to explore the associations between trace elements in dietary intake and the other three biological media (blood, urine, or feces) and inter-element interactions among the latter, we simultaneously collected 72-h diet duplicates, whole blood, and 72-h urine and feces from 120 free-living healthy males in China. Correlations among the toxic (cadmium [Cd], lead [Pb]), and nutritionally essential (zinc [Zn], copper [Cu], iron [Fe], manganese [Mn], selenium [Se], iodine [I]) elements were evaluated using Spearman rank correlation analysis based on analytical data determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Dietary Cd intakes were highly correlated with the fecal Cd and blood Cd levels. Inverse correlations were found for Fe–Cd and Fe–Pb in both diet versus blood and diet versus feces. Cd–Zn and Cd–Se were significantly directly correlated in the urine and feces. Cd–Se and Pb–Se were negatively correlated in blood. In addition, there existed an extremely significant association between urinary Se and urinary I. Moreover, the other two highly direct correlations were found for Se–Fe and for I–Fe in urine. Improved knowledge regarding their mutual associations is considered to be of fundamental importance to understand more the complex interrelationships in trace element metabolism.  相似文献

Breast cancer incidence in Nigerian women has significantly increased during the past three decades in parallel with the rapid industrialization of that country. This suggested that the associated widespread contamination of the soil and of the water supplies by lead (Pb) and other industrial metals was a major contributing cause. Because of its many domestic, industrial, and automotive uses, Pb is of particular concern as it has been shown to promote the development of mammary tumors in murine mammary tumor virus-infected female C3H mice at levels as low of 0.5 ppm Pb in the drinking water. Lead belongs to the group of selenium-antagonistic elements that interact with selenium (Se), abolishing its anti-carcinogenic effect. Lead on chronic, low-level exposure in addition also accelerates tumor growth rates. Higher levels of Pb were found in blood and head hair samples of newly diagnosed patients with breast cancer, all with infiltrating ductal carcinoma, the most common form of breast cancer in Nigeria, seen at Obafemi Awolowo University, than in cancer-free controls from the same area. Evidence for interactions between Pb and Se was obtained from blood, hair, and tumor biopsy tissue analyses. Furthermore, the Pb levels in hair samples of the patients were directly correlated with the volumes of their tumors, in accord with the tumor growth-promoting effects of Pb. Conversely, Se levels in hair and blood were inversely correlated with the tumor volumes, consistent with the anti-proliferative effects of Se. Several other elements, e.g., Cd, Hg, Cr, Sn, and As, were detected in the scalp hair of the patients and the controls, although at significantly lower levels than those of Pb. However, correlation calculations revealed them also to interact with Se, suggesting that only a fraction of the Se in organs and tissues is actually present in bioactive forms. In metal-exposed subjects, a state of latent Se deficiency may exist, resulting in depressed immune functions and increased cancer susceptibility. Evidence is presented to show that Pb and other metals also interact with iodine, another vitally important essential trace element believed to protect against breast cancer development. Public health programs aiming at lowering the breast cancer risk of Nigerian women thus will have to include effective measures to protect the population from exposures to Pb and other industrial metals that are presently contaminating the environment and the water supplies.  相似文献

The major focus of this work was to investigate how altered protein thiol redox homeostasis affects radiation-induced cell death. We used the cells of wild-type CHO cell line K1, the CHO cell line E89, which is null for G6PD activity, and a radiation-sensitive CHO cell line, XRS5. The protein-thiol redox status of cells was altered with cell-permeable disulfides, hydroxyethyldisulfide (HEDS) or lipoate. HEDS is primarily reduced by thioltransferase (glutaredoxin), with GSH as the electron donor. In contrast, lipoate is reduced by thioredoxin reductase. HEDS was reduced at a greater rate than lipoate by G6PD-containing K1 (wild-type) cells. Reduction of disulfides by G6PD-deficient cells was significantly slower with HEDS as substrate and was nearly absent with lipoate. The rate of reduction of HEDS by E89 cells decelerated to near zero by 30 min, whereas the reduction continued at nearly the same rate during the entire measurement period for K1 cells. HEDS treatment decreased the GSH and protein thiol (PSH) content more in G6PD-deficient cells than in G6PD-containing cells. On the other hand, lipoate did not significantly alter the protein thiol, but it increased the GSH in K1 cells. Acute depletion of GSH by l-buthionine-sulfoximine (l-BSO) in combination with dimethylfumarate significantly decreased the rate of reduction of HEDS by K1 cells close to that of G6PD-deficient cells. Prior GSH depletion by l-BSO alone significantly decreased the PSH in glucose-depleted E89 cells exposed to HEDS, but this did not occur with K1 cells. The radiation response of G6PD-deficient cells was significantly sensitized by HEDS, but HEDS did not have this effect on K1 cells. The DNA repair-deficient XRS5 CHO cells displayed the same capacity as K1 cells for HEDS reduction, and like K1 cells the XRS5 cells were not sensitized to radiation by HEDS treatment. Deprivation of glucose, which provides the substrate for G6PD in the oxidative pentose phosphate cycle, decreased the rate of bioreduction of HEDS and lipoate in G6PD-containing cells to the level in G6PD-deficient cells. In the absence of glucose, HEDS treatment diminished non-protein thiol and protein thiol to the same level as those in G6PD-deficient cells and sensitized the K1 cells to HEDS treatment. However, depletion of glucose did not alter the sensitivity of XRS5 cells in either the presence or absence of HEDS. Overall the results suggest a major role for pentose cycle control of protein redox state coupled to the activities of the thioltransferase and thioredoxin systems. The results also show that protein thiol status is a critical factor in cell survival after irradiation.  相似文献

Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for humans and animals, with antioxidant, anti-cancer and anti-viral effects, and wheat is an important dietary source of this element. In this study, surveys of Se concentration in grain of ancestral and wild relatives of wheat, wheat landrace accessions, populations, and commercial cultivars grown in Mexico and Australia were conducted. Cultivars were also grown under the same conditions to assess genotypic variation in Se density. Eleven data sets were reviewed with the aim of assessing the comparative worth of breeding compared with fertilising as a strategy to improve Se intake in human populations. Surveys and field trials that included diverse wheat germplasm as well as other cereals found grain Se concentrations in the range 5–720μgkg−1, but much of this variation was associated with spatial variation in soil selenium. This study detected no significant genotypic variation in grain Se density among modern commercial bread or durum wheat, triticale or barley varieties. However, the diploid wheat, Aegilops tauschii and rye were 42% and 35% higher, respectively, in grain Se concentration than other cereals in separate field trials, and, in a hydroponic trial, rye was 40% higher in foliar Se content than two wheat landraces. While genotypic differences may exist in modern wheat varieties, they are likely to be small in comparison with background soil variation, at least in Australia and Mexico. Field sites that are spatially very uniform in available soil Se would be needed to allow comparison of grain Se concentration and content in order to assess genotypic variation.  相似文献

The serum selenium and the whole blood selenium of 72 healthy persons (47 women, 25 men) was determined. There exist sex specific differences of the whole blood selenium between men (98±19 μg Se/L) and women (89±17 μg Se/L). The serum selenium did not show sex specific differences, but sex specific differences are found if the total amount of extracellular selenium is calculated by correction of the serum selenium with the hematocrit. Women have more extracellular selenium/L whole blood (40±8 μg Se) than men (36±7 μg Se). Men have more intraerythrocyte selenium (cellular selenium=67±14 μg Se) in one L whole blood than women (52±17 μg Se). There exist also sex specific differences if the cellular selenium is calculated/g hemoglobin (men .44 μg Se/g Hb, women .37 μg Se/Hb) or per erythrocyte (men 136.1×10?19 g Se/Ery, women 113.9×10?19 g Se/Ery). In the cellular compartment of one L whole blood on the average 1.56 times more selenium is present than in the extracellular compartment. Most of the intraerythrocyte selenium is hemoglobin bound (84%) and utmost 16% glutathione peroxidase associated. An erythrocyte contains about 3500 mol glutathione peroxidase, or, for every 80000 mol hemoglobin one mol glutathione peroxidase. A standard man needs about 2.5 μg selenium/d for the synthesis of the hemoglobin and the erythrocyte. The hematological parameters hemoglobin and the erythrocyte number are correlated with the cellular selenium and the ratio cellular selenium/extracellular selenium. Positive significant correlations are found that are best if a parabolic model is used to interpret the shape of the curves. From the shape of the best correlation lines it can be concluded that selenium may be beneficial for hemoglobin synthesis and erythropoesis. The extracellular selenium may have influence on the volume of the erythrocyte by protecting the outer erythrocyte membrane from lipid peroxidation. A method is reported based on the carbon furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy, which is able to determine without wet digestion selenium in whole blood.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of the chemical form of selenium (Se) fed to sows (1) on production and immune quality of colostrum and (2) on piglet response to a deterioration of sanitary conditions after weaning. Twenty-two pregnant sows were assigned to receive a diet supplemented with 0.3 ppm Se from either sodium selenite (inorganic Se) or Se-enriched yeast (organic Se as Sel-Plex®; Alltech Inc., Nicholasville, KY, USA). Dietary treatments were applied during the last month of pregnancy and lactation. Blood samples were collected on sows before dietary treatment, on the day of weaning and 6 weeks later, and on three to five piglets within litters at birth, at weaning and 6 weeks post weaning. Whole blood was analysed for Se concentration. Colostrum samples were collected at 0, 3, 6 and 24 h post partum and milk samples on days 14 and 27 of lactation. Colostrum and milk were analysed for Se and immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations. At weaning, 40 pairs of littermate piglets were moved to rooms where sanitary conditions were good or purposely deteriorated. Piglets were reared individually and fed ad libitum. After 15 days, piglets and feed refusals were weighed and a blood sample was collected to measure plasma haptoglobin concentration. When sows were fed organic Se, Se concentrations were increased by 33% in colostrum (P < 0.05), 89% in milk (P < 0.001) and by 28% in whole blood of piglets at weaning (P < 0.001). Colostrum production during the 24 h after the onset of farrowing and IgG concentrations in colostrum and milk did not significantly differ between the two groups of sows. Weaned piglets reared in good sanitary conditions grew faster (P < 0.001) than piglets housed in poor conditions. Sanitary conditions did not influence mean plasma haptoglobin concentrations of piglets (P > 0.1). The source of Se fed to the dams did not influence piglet performance or haptoglobin concentrations after weaning. These findings confirm that, compared with inorganic Se, organic Se fed to the dam is better transferred to colostrum and milk, and consequently to piglets. They indicate that the Se source influences neither colostrum production nor IgG concentrations in colostrum, and that the higher Se contents of piglets does not limit the reduction of growth performance when weaning occurs in experimentally deteriorated sanitary conditions.  相似文献

BackgroundHigher environmental temperature is a major abiotic stress factor for animals and human beings. The selenium (Se) is an important trace mineral having diverse health promoting effects under stress conditions. However, studies on dietary requirement of selenium under prolonged heat stress condition are lacking. Present study discern the effect of higher dietary Se levels on antioxidant, cytokine, haemato-biochemical profile, and immune response, and the selenoproteins mRNA expression in rats under prolonged heat stress (HS) condition.MethodsWeaned Wistar rats (4 wk age; 67.6 ± 1.53 g BW; n = 72) housed under thermoneutral (TN) or HS conditions and fed with purified diets containing three graded Se levels were divided in six experimental groups. The groups were 1) TN control with 138 ppb Se (TN_CON), 2) HS control with 138 ppb Se (HS_CON), 3) TN with higher Se @ 291 ppb (TN_Se1), 4) HS with higher Se @ 291 ppb (HS_Se1) 5) TN with higher Se @ 460 ppb (TN_Se2), 6) HS with higher Se @ 460 ppb (HS_Se2). Rats in all the six groups were maintained in TN environmental conditions (57.3 ± 0.22 temperature humidity index; THI) for initial 28 days period. Subsequently, rats of HS groups were exposed to 77.0 ± 0.11 THI for 6 h/d in a psychrometric chamber for last fourteen days.ResultsHigher dietary Se (291 and 460 ppb) significantly improved the blood hemoglobin concentration and reduced serum alanine aminotransferase activity of rats under HS conditions. The serum triiodothyronine and insulin levels were significantly higher in high dietary Se groups irrespective of the environmental conditions. Similarly, the serum reduced glutathione levels, and catalase and superoxide dismutase enzyme activity were increased and malondialdehyde levels were reduced in high dietary Se groups irrespective of stress conditions. The glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity was significantly higher in 460 ppb dietary Se groups as compared to other groups. The serum pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)− 1 was declined, whereas the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 level was increased in high dietary Se fed rats under both HS and TN conditions with 460 ppb dietary Se groups showing pronounced effects. Further, there was heat stress- and dietary Se level dependent- up regulation in hepatic GPx and iodothyronine deiodinase-II mRNA expression and similar pattern was noticed in hepatic thioredoxin reductase mRNA expression. The selenoprotein-P mRNA expression was up regulated in 460 ppb Se fed HS group as compared to CON and Se1_C groups. High dietary Se improved the humoral immune response 7d after antigen inoculation under HS conditions whereas cell-mediated immune response was augmented in rats fed higher Se under TN condition.ConclusionIt is concluded that under prolonged heat stress conditions the dietary requirement of Se may be increased to 460 ppb for improving the antioxidant status and humoral immune response, cytokine levels, modulating the thyroid and insulin hormone, and the selenoproteins mRNA expression of rats.  相似文献

Renal selenium excretion in sheep was measured during intravenous infusion of sodium selenite, and the post-infusion dynamics of Se levels in whole blood, plasma and red blood cells (RBC) were investigated for the next 5 days. The plasma Se level increased almost twenty fold with the infusion of Na2SeO3 (from 0.39 +/- 0.02 to 7.83 +/- 0.33 micromol x L(-1), P < 0.001) compared with the baseline value. The selenium concentration in urine (0.07 +/- 0.02 vs. 18.53 +/- 2.56 micromol x L(-1), P < 0.001), the amount of Se excreted (0.14 +/- 0.07 vs. 21.40 +/- 2.31 nmol x min(-1), P < 0.001) and the renal clearance of Se (0.1 9 +/- 0.03 vs. 3.01 +/- 0.34 mL x min(-1), P < 0.001) were found to be highly significantly elevated during selenite loading. The clearance measurements showed no changes in the urinary flow rate or in the glomerular filtration rate. During and at the end of infusion the highest Se level was attained in plasma, followed by whole blood and RBC. The plasma Se level fell rapidly within 10 min after the end of infusion, but the concentration of Se in RBC was stable up to the fourth hour, when it started to decrease too. On day 5 the Se concentrations in plasma, RBC and whole blood were found to be only slightly but still significantly higher than before the selenite infusion. The large disproportion between the infusion rate of Se (8.76 microg x min(-1)) and its renal excretion rate (1.69 microg x min(-1)) found in clearance measurements suggests low glomerular filtration of infused selenium, which might primarily be caused by the binding of selenite metabolites to blood constituents. The presented results confirm the low bioavailability to ruminants of Se from sodium selenite.  相似文献

The concentration of selenium (Se) was measured by instrumental neutron activation analysis in samples of blood plasma, semen, and reproductive and non-reproductive tissues obtained from each of 12 young bulls (8 Angus and 4 Simmental). Semen was collected by electro-ejaculation and used for measurements of the frequency of primary and secondary spermatozoal abnormalities. The mean Se concentration (μg/ml) of semen (± SD) was 0.461 (±0.223) compared to 0.061 (±0.014) for blood plasma. Tissue from the testis, caput epididymis and cauda epididymis had mean Se concentrations of from 2.5 to 2.7 μg/g compared to less than 1.8 μg/g in all other tissues except the pituitary gland (3.4 μg/g) and kidney cortex (6.9 μg/g).Correlations of the proportional incidence of spermatozoal abnormalities with Se concentrations in reproductive tissues, semen or blood plasma were low. Although Se may be concentrated in the testis and epididymis, the Se concentration was not related to spermatozoal abnormalities.  相似文献

We measured selenium (Se) levels in the urine and blood plasma samples of 72 Saudi Arabian patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and 70 control subjects of the same origin. To correct for differences in the hydration state of the subjects, the selenium concentration for each urine sample was normalized by dividing it by the concentration of creatinine (CREAT) in the same sample. The median (and range) of the values found for the concentration of Se in plasma, urine, and normalized concentration in urine for the control subjects was 1.306 (0.66–2.50) μM, 0.478 (0.05–2.00) μM, and 56.7 (10.6–426.5) μM Se/M CREAT, respectively, whereas, for the patients, it was 1.246 (0.53–2.45) μM, 0.39 (0.05–1.90) μM, and 75.1 (4.9–656.2) μM Se/M CREAT, respectively. Additionally, the patients were separated into three subgroups according to the severity of their disease state as judged by NYHA procedure, and were then compared to the control group. Only group 4 (the most severe state of the disease) had a significantly lower concentration of urinary Se than the control group. However, the difference became nonsignificant when normalized for CREAT levels. There was no significant difference in the plasma Se levels between the controls and any of the patient groups. As the plasma Se in the control group and in the DCM patients both fell on the low end of the “normal” range, with the patients being marginally lower than the controls, there is no firm evidence from this study to suggest that Se is related to the high incidence rate of DCM found in Saudi Arabia.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effects of feed supplementation with equivalent doses of selenium from sodium selenite (SS) or selenized yeast (SY) on Se deposition, selenoenzyme activity and lipid peroxidation in tissues as well as in bacterial and protozoal fractions of rumen contents in sheep. The phagocytic activity of monocytes and neutrophils in whole blood was also assessed after 3 months of dietary treatment. While animals in the control group were fed with unsupplemented basal diet (BD) containing only background Se (0.16 mg/kg DM), the diet of the other two groups (n = 6) consisted of identical BD enriched with 0.4 mg Se/kg DM either from SS or SY. Concentrations of Se in blood and tissues were found to be significantly increased in both supplemented groups. No response in Se deposition was recorded in the musculus longissimus dorsi of sheep given dietary SS. The intake of SY resulted in a significantly higher Se level in the blood, kidney medulla, skeletal muscles, heart, intestinal and ruminal mucosa than in the case of SS supplementation. No differences appeared between tissue Se contents in the liver and kidney cortex due to the source of added Se. Regardless of source, Se supplementation to feeds significantly increased the glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in blood and tissues except the kidney medulla and jejunal mucosa. Supplementation with SY resulted in significantly higher activity of thioredoxin reductase in the liver and ileal mucosa, and also reduced malondialdehyde content in the liver and duodenal mucosa. Dietary Se intake increased Se concentrations in the total rumen contents and bacterial and protozoal fractions. The accumulation of Se in rumen microbiota was associated with increased GPx activity. Phagocytic cell activity was enhanced by Se supplementation. Our results indicate that Se from both sources has beneficial effects on antioxidant status in sheep and can be utilized by rumen microflora.  相似文献

Although various proteins and some electrolytes have been measured in human saliva, little systematic data about the major and minor elemental components of this body fluid have been obtained. In order to obtain such data, concentrations of C, Na, P, Cl, K, Ca, Sc, Cr, Fe, Co, Zn, Se, Br, Rb, Sb, I, and Cs in human parotid saliva were measured by instrumental nuclear methods. The data obtained confirmed the relative lack of Zn in saliva of patients with hypogeusia (decreased taste acuity) and suggested that concentrations of Na, Cl, Br, and Ca followed the order: normals > hypogeusia > hyposmia (decreased smell acuity). To compare concentrations of elements in saliva with those in blood and urine, absolute concentrations were normalized to that of Na through the use of a concept called an enrichment factor. On this basis, parotid saliva is relatively depleted in Se, Zn, and Fe and enriched for most other elements relative to blood plasma indicating that the fluid is not simply a transudate of blood plasma. Using this same technique, saliva composition was found more similar to urine than blood plasma, being relatively depleted in Se, Cs, and Co, being enriched in I, Br, and Cr and having about the same relative concentrations of P, Cl, Zn, Fe, Ca, K, and Rb. As the total body concentrations of many of the enriched elements in saliva are extremely small, their enrichment in saliva suggests special roles for these elements in the oral cavity. Because of its accessibility, ease of collection, and interaction with some body constituents, saliva represents a useful, albeit neglected, tool in the diagnosis of some physiological and pathological changes in body function and in understanding important aspects of trace metal metabolism.  相似文献

With reports of either no change or reduction of blood pressure, the relationship between selenium and blood pressure has not been clear. Normal Se values are not available for the Sprague Dawley (SD) rat or in the young and adult rat with various models of experimental hypertension. This study measured serum Se levels in the young and adult normotensive (NT), Grollman renal hypertensive (RH), and Okamoto-Aoki spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR). The young animals have statistically significant (P<0.001) lower Se values as measured by the fluorometric method than those found at adulthood. Selenium levels were found to be altered in the adult SHR animals when compared with the RH and NT animals. The serum Se value for the normotensive SD rat was found to be 65.0±3.5 μg/dL, and for the two experimental models, 63.7±4.6 μg/dL for the RH, whereas the SHR level was elevated to 75.04±4.8 μg/dL (P<0.001). Elevated serum Se values in the adult SHR animals suggests an altered metabolism in SHR animals.  相似文献

Blood Se of adult horses was 26.1, 25.8, and 27.0 ng/ml (mean values at 3 farms), where the Se of food was about 20 ng/g dry substance. Experimental adult horses which received about 41 ng Se/g food showed 45.3 ng/ml blood. At low Se intake suckling foals show higher blood Se than mares, but with high Se intake, the opposite will occur. This is reflected in milk Se, which raises but slowly with rise of mare’s blood Se. Se in blood plasma and in blood corpuscles is on the same level. The effect of various dose levels of Se on blood Se was studied: From 1.5 to 6 mg Se/week, blood Se rose rather linearity; 18 and 30 rag Se/week gave but slightly more effect than 6 mg.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of 2-furan-2-yl-1H-benzimidazole regarding vitamins A, E, C, selenium (Se), malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels on rats. 2-Furan-2-yl-1H-benzimidazole was given to rats by subcutaneous injection every other day for a total of 22 injections. At the end of the experiment, Se levels were determined by using a fluorimetric method. Serum levels of vitamins A, E, C, and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels of erythrocytes were spectrophotometrically determined. Our experimental results showed that vitamins A, E, C, and Se levels were found generally lower than the control groups, while serum MDA level and GSH-Px activity flexibly increased, which is dependent on injection days. The observed decreases in vitamins A, E, C, and Se levels in the blood might be causally related to the increased amount of free radicals that are generated with 2-furan-2-yl-1H-benzimidazole injection. However, further investigations are needed to clarify the significance of this observation in respect with the 2-furan-2-yl-1H-benzimidazole injection.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Selenium (Se) and sulfur (S) exhibit similar chemical properties. In flowering plants (angiosperms) selenate and sulfate are acquired and assimilated by common transport and metabolic pathways. It is hypothesized that most angiosperm species show little or no discrimination in the accumulation of Se and S in leaves when their roots are supplied a mixture of selenate and sulfate, but some, termed Se-accumulator plants, selectively accumulate Se in preference to S under these conditions. METHODS: This paper surveys Se and S accumulation in leaves of 39 angiosperm species, chosen to represent the range of plant Se accumulation phenotypes, grown hydroponically under identical conditions. RESULTS: The data show that, when supplied a mixture of selenate and sulfate: (1) plant species differ in both their leaf Se ([Se](leaf)) and leaf S ([S](leaf)) concentrations; (2) most angiosperms show little discrimination for the accumulation of Se and S in their leaves and, in non-accumulator plants, [Se](leaf) and [S](leaf) are highly correlated; (3) [Se](leaf) in Se-accumulator plants is significantly greater than in other angiosperms, but [S](leaf), although high, is within the range expected for angiosperms in general; and (4) the Se/S quotient in leaves of Se-accumulator plants is significantly higher than in leaves of other angiosperms. CONCLUSION: The traits of extraordinarily high [Se](leaf) and leaf Se/S quotients define the distinct elemental composition of Se-accumulator plants.  相似文献
