This study investigated the relationship between the essential amino acid requirement of the aphid Aphis fabae Scop. and the phloem sap amino acid composition of its host plants. The dietary amino acid requirement of A. fabae varied between clones. One or more of the eight clones of A. fabae tested displayed depressed larval survival, larval growth rate, or rm on diets lacking histidine, methionine, threonine, and valine, but none of the other five essential amino acids. The required amino acids corresponded closely to the essential amino acids that varied in relative concentrations among 16 plant species tested: histidine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. It is suggested that the interclonal variation in the dietary requirements of an aphid species may contribute to the intraspecific variation in plant utilisation patterns. The phloem sap amino acid composition and sucrose : amino acid ratio did not differ consistently between host plant species of A. fabae and non‐host species, indicating that phloem amino acid composition is not an important factor in determining the host plant range of this aphid species.  相似文献

The two subspecies of the host-alternating black bean aphid, Aphis fabae Scopoli, used in this study have different secondary host plants but reproduce sexually in autumn on the same host plant, spindle, Euonymus europaea L. In both Aphis fabae fabae Scopoli and A. f. solanella Theobald the percentage of adult mating females (oviparae) calling (releasing sex pheromone) each day increased with age up to day 8. During the course of a day the mating females of A. f. solanella called most actively early in the morning and then showed a gradual decrease in calling activity. In contrast, few A. f. fabae called early in the day and were most active around midday, after which the incidence of calling decreased slightly, with 50% still calling in the evening. In both taxa the activity of the males in the absence of mating females paralleled the calling activity of their respective females. In an olfactometer, males showed a marked preference for the sex pheromone released by conspecific females over that of the other subspecies and did not respond to the odour of spindle. Thus, as in the other species of aphids there are specific mate recognition systems in A. f. fabae and A. f. solanella, which are likely to reduce the incidence of hybridisation.  相似文献

Specialization on different host plants can promote evolutionary diversification of herbivorous insects. Work on pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum) has contributed significantly to the understanding of this process, demonstrating that populations associated with different host plants exhibit performance trade‐offs across hosts, show adaptive host choice and genetic differentiation and possess different communities of bacterial endosymbionts. Populations specialized on different secondary host plants during the parthenogenetic summer generations are also described for the black bean aphid (Aphis fabae complex) and are usually treated as different (morphologically cryptic) subspecies. In contrast to pea aphids, however, host choice and mate choice are decoupled in black bean aphids, because populations from different summer hosts return to the same primary host plant to mate and lay overwintering eggs. This could counteract evolutionary divergence, and it is currently unknown to what extent black bean aphids using different summer hosts are indeed differentiated. We addressed this question by microsatellite genotyping and endosymbiont screening of black bean aphids collected in summer from the goosefoot Chenopodium album (subspecies A. f. fabae) and from thistles of the genus Cirsium (subspecies A. f. cirsiiacanthoides) across numerous sites in Switzerland and France. Our results show clearly that aphids from Cirsium and Chenopodium exhibit strong and geographically consistent genetic differentiation and that they differ in their frequencies of infection with particular endosymbionts. The dependence on a joint winter host has thus not prevented the evolutionary divergence into summer host‐adapted populations that appear to have evolved mechanisms of reproductive isolation within a common mating habitat.  相似文献

Aphid species can be polyphagous, feeding on multiple host plants across genera. As host plant species can have large variation in their phloem composition, this can affect aphid fitness and honeydew composition. Previous research showed significant intraspecific genotype variation in the composition of the honeydew carbohydrates of the black bean aphid Aphis fabae, with the ant attractant trisaccharide melezitose showing especially large variation across different genotypes. In this study, we test if variation in melezitose and carbohydrate composition of aphid honeydew could be linked to the adaptation of specific aphid genotypes to particular host plants. To this end, 4 high and 5 low melezitose secreting genotypes of the black bean aphid Aphis fabae were reared on 4 common host plants: broad bean, goosefoot, beet, and poppy. The carbohydrate composition, and in particular melezitose secretion, showed important aphid genotype and host plant interactions, with some genotypes being high melezitose secreting on 1 host plant but not on another. However, the interaction effects were not paralleled in the fitness measurements, even though there were significant differences in the average fitness across the different host plants. On the whole, this study demonstrates that aphid honeydew composition is influenced by complex herbivore–plant interactions. We discuss the relevance of these findings in the context of ant–aphid mutualisms and adaptive specialization in aphids.  相似文献

Intraguild predators and the spatial distribution of a parasitoid   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
An experimental plot of the aphid Aphis fabae on various host plant species was colonized by natural populations of the aphidiine parasitoid Lysiphlebus fabarum and insect predators, especially coccinellids. Parasitism of A. fabae by L. fabarum was significantly depressed on plants bearing coccinellids. The number of parasitized aphids increased with aphid abundance on three plant species (Papaver dubium, Rumex obtusifolius, Vicia faba), but not on the plant species (Chenopodium album) which bore very high numbers of coccinellids. In complementary laboratory experiments, L. fabarum offered a choice between odours of plants infested with A. fabae and/or coccinellids selected the odour fields from coccinellid treatments at significantly lower frequency than the odour fields of other treatments. It is concluded that avoidance of coccinellids by L. fabarum contributes to the negative association between the abundance of coccinellids and parasitoids in the field. Thirty Vicia species and 28 V. faba cultivars were evaluated for Aphis fabae resistance by measuring rates of aphid population increase (rm) on the host plants. A subset of these species (22) and cultivars (five) were evaluated for resistance to Acyrthosiphon pisum and Megoura viciae. For the same subset of 22 Vicia species and all three aphid species, positive correlations were observed between the concentration and numbers of leaf and stem non-protein amino acids and the level of aphid resistance. Correlations were also observed between trichome density, on some organs of the host, and both nymphal survival and development time. Aphid resistance, together with these possible physical and chemical resistance mechanisms, showed a pattern which was described in relation to the taxonomy of the genus Vicia and the degree of domestication of the host. The least advanced Vicia species were most resistant whilst the more specialised species and those most closely related to V. faba and V. faba itself were most susceptible. Within each taxonomic group (subgenus or section), the most domesticated species were least resistant. The merits of utilising the resistance found in some V. faba cultivars and in other wild Vicia species were considered.  相似文献

Parasitoid host selection behaviour has been extensively studied in experimentally simplified tritrophic systems formed by one single food chain (one plant, one herbivore and one parasitoid species). The "Mother knows best" hypothesis predicts that the preference for a plant-host complex should be positively correlated with plant quality for offspring performance. We studied the host selection behaviour of the generalist endoparasitoid Aphidius matricariae towards the black bean aphid Aphis fabae in the intercrop system including Vicia faba as a focal plant and its companion plant Camelina sativa. Dual-choice laboratory bioassays revealed that parasitoid females preferred to orientate towards (1) the plant-aphid complex over the non-infested plant whatever the complex (2) the C. sativa-A. fabae complex over the V. faba-A. fabae complex. In dual choice attack rate bioassays, parasitoid females showed more interest towards the aphids on C. sativa but paradoxically chose to oviposit more in aphids on V. faba. Ultimately, parasitoids that had developed on the V. faba-A. fabae complex exhibited better fitness parameters. By demonstrating that parasitoid females were able to discriminate the aphid host that offered the highest fitness to their offspring but selected beforehand the least suitable plant-aphid complex, we provide key insight into the disruption in their host selection behaviour potentially triggered by diverse habitats. This suggests that the "Mother knows best" hypothesis could be thwarted by increasing the complexity of the studied systems.  相似文献

Wedged between bottom-up and top-down processes: aphids on tansy   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Abstract. 1. Many species of aphids exploit a single host‐plant species and have to cope with changing environmental conditions. They often vary greatly in abundance even when feeding on the same host. In a field experiment, the bottom‐up (plant quality/patch type frequency) and top‐down (ant attendance/predation) effects on the abundance of four species of aphids feeding on tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) were tested using a full factorial design. In addition, a model was used to examine these patch characteristics for their relative effects on the population dynamics and abundance of different aphid species. 2. Aphid numbers changed significantly depending on the quality of the host plant and the presence/absence of attending ants. The obligate myrmecophile, Metopeurum fuscoviride, was abundant on high‐quality plants, while on poor quality plants or on plants without attending ants these aphids did not survive until the end of the experiment. The facultative myrmecophiles, Aphis fabae and Brachycaudus cardui, and the unattended aphid species, Macrosiphoniella tanacetaria, all reached similar peak population densities, but M. tanacetaria did best in poor quality patches. 3. Natural enemies reduced aphid numbers, but those species feeding on high‐quality plants survived longer than those on poor‐quality plants, which existed only for a short period of time, especially when associated with ants. Losses due to migration of winged morphs and mortality caused by parasitoids were insignificant. 4. Varying the frequency of different patch types in a model indicates that different degrees of associations with ants are favoured in different environments. If the proportion of high‐quality patches in a habitat is large, obligate myrmecophiles do best. On increasing the number of poor‐quality patches, unattended species become more abundant. 5. The results suggest that, in spite of large species specific differences in growth rates, degree of myrmecophily or life cycle features, the temporal and spatial variability in top‐down and bottom‐up forces differentially affects aphid species and allows the simultaneous exploitation of a shared host‐plant species.  相似文献

Various strategies have evolved to protect animals from predators. We explored the activity and predation risk experienced by two species of aphid. Both species will drop from plants when disturbed and face a suite of predators, including wolf spiders, when they reach the ground. We focused on Aphis fabae Scopoli and Aphis nerii Boyer de Fonscolombe (Hemiptera: Aphididae, Aphidini); A. nerii sequesters cardiac glycosides when it feeds on milkweed. We explored the interactions between these aphids and the wolf spider Pardosa milvina Hentz (Araneae: Lycosidae) that is likely a predator they encounter when they are not on their host plants. We hypothesized that there would be differences in the susceptibility of the two species to predation and that the more vulnerable species would react more strongly to substrate-borne cues deposited by the spider. We predicted that any behavioral reactions that the aphid displayed in response to predator cues would be effective in reducing risk. We documented the activity of each aphid species on chemotactile cues from P. milvina and measured predation rate in arenas with and without those same cues. Aphis fabae altered their activity in the presence of P. milvina cues but A. nerii did not. Likewise, A. fabae was more susceptible to predation by P. milvina when no cues were present, but when cues were present, predatory success was much lower. Aphis nerii, the less desirable prey for this predator, moved less and had a different locomotory pattern than A. fabae in control trials with no spider cues and so we cannot determine whether its chemical protection or activity were more important in reducing predation levels. These results provide insight into the risks faced by aphids when they are off of their host plant and in a barren environment.  相似文献

Aphids are a worldwide pest and an important model in ecology and evolution. Little is known, however, about the genetic structure of their colonies at a microgeographic level. For example, it remains largely unknown whether most species form monoclonal or polyclonal colonies. Here, we present the first detailed study on levels of clonal mixing in a nonsocial facultative ant mutualist, the black bean aphid Aphis fabae. In contrast to the earlier suggestion that colonies of this species are generally monoclonal, we found that across two subspecies of the black bean aphid, A. fabae cirsiiacanthoidis and A. fabae fabae, 32% and 67% of the aphid colonies were in fact polyclonal, consisting of a mix of up to four different clones, which resulted in an overall average relatedness within colonies of 0.90 and 0.79 in the two subspecies. Data further show that the average relatedness in A. f. cirsiiacanthoidis remained relatively constant throughout the season, which means that clonal erosion due to clonal selection more or less balanced with the influx of new clones from elsewhere. Nevertheless, relatedness tended to decrease over the lifetime of a given colony, implying that clonal mixing primarily resulted from the joining of pre‐existing colonies as opposed to via simultaneous host colonisation by several foundresses. Widespread clonal mixing is argued to affect the ecology and evolution of the aphids in various important ways, for example with respect to the costs and benefits of group living, the evolution of dispersal and the interaction with predators as well as with the ant mutualists.  相似文献

Xylem ingestion by winged aphids   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
When aphids and their host plant are incorporated in a DC electrical circuit, phloem and xylem ingestion register as separate waveforms of the electrical penetration graph (EPG) signal. Aphids are primarily phloem feeders; xylem ingestion is seldom reported but can be induced experimentally by fasting the insects in desiccating conditions. In experiments with the black bean aphid, Aphis fabae Scop., young winged (alate) and unwinged (apterous) virginoparous adults were collected from their natal host plants (broad bean, Vicia faba L.) and allowed 3-h continuous EPG-recorded access to V. faba seedlings. Several aphids (47% of both morphs) showed ingestion from phloem sieve elements. Alate aphids also showed frequent xylem ingestion (60% of individuals), but no apterous aphids exhibited this activity. The EPG technique involves attachment of a fine gold wire electrode to each insect, a process that may affect normal behaviour at the plant surface. However, when the technique was modified to monitor the stylet activities of freely-settled aphids, high levels of xylem ingestion by alates were also recorded. The results suggest that the developmental physiology of winged aphids somehow predisposes them to xylem ingestion, possibly as a result of dehydration during the teneral period. Alate aphids may reduce their weight by fasting before take-off, giving aerodynamic benefits, but making rehydration, via xylem uptake, a priority following plant contact.  相似文献

Abstract 1. The taxon known as the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, is composed of a series of host plant associated populations and is widely used as a model system to explore ecological speciation and the evolution of specialisation. It is thus important to know how maternal and pre‐adult experience influences host plant utilisation in this species. 2. The relative importance of the maternal and pre‐adult host plant for adult fecundity and host preference was investigated using three aphid clones collected from Lathyrus pratensis and maintained on Lathyrus or Vicia faba. 3. No significant effects of the maternal host plant on offspring fecundity were detected. 4. The host plant on which the aphid grew up influenced adult fecundity, although in a complex way that depended on both the adult host plant species and when after transfer to the test plant fecundity was assessed. 5. All three clones preferred to colonise Lathyrus over Vicia, and this preference was stronger for aphids raised on Lathyrus. 6. The significance of the results for studies of the evolution of specialisation and speciation that employ A. pisum is discussed.  相似文献

A black Aphis sp. on Tropaeolum can be separated, morphologically, from A. fabae Scop. In controlled experiments this aphid, both winged and wingless forms, actively selects Vicia faba as a host plant, settles to feed and reproduce, but always dies prematurely. Offspring also soon die. The aphid is unable to take up plant sap from beans. The behaviour associated with host plant selection is not adjusted to its feeding requirements.

There are few longtime studies on the effects on aphids of being tended by ants. The aim of this study is to investigate how the presence of ants influences settling decisions by colonizing aphids and the post‐settlement growth and survival of aphid colonies. We conducted a field experiment using the facultative myrmecophile Aphis fabae and the ant Lasius niger. The experiment relied on natural aphid colonization of potted plants of scentless mayweed Tripleurospermum perforatum placed outdoors. Ants occurred naturally at the field site and had access to half of the pots and were prevented from accessing the remainder. The presence of winged, dispersing aphids, the growth and survival of establishing aphid colonies, and the presence of parasitoids were measured in relation to presence or absence of ants, over a period of five weeks. The presence of ants did not significantly influence the pattern of initial host plant colonization or the initial colony growth, but ant‐tended aphids were subject to higher parasitism by hymenopteran parasitoids. The net result over the experimental period was that the presence of ants decreased aphid colony productivity, measured as the number of winged summer migrants produced from the colonized host plants. This implies that aphids do not always benefit from the presence of ants, but under some conditions rather pay a cost in the form of reduced dispersal.  相似文献

Abstract. The black bean aphid, Aphis fabae Scopoli, has a host‐alternating life cycle. Winged female autumn migrants (gynoparae) develop on numerous summer host plants but as adults will only colonize the winter host (spindle, Euonymus europaeus L.). When stylet activities of gynoparae were electrically recorded during access to a spindle leaf, the insects spent the majority (75%) of the 6‐h experimental period penetrating the plant surface and a large proportion of it (44%) ingesting from either phloem or xylem vessels. Most (95%) gynoparae initiated reproduction on spindle, producing 4.15 ± 0.59 offspring per adult by the end of the experiment (mean ± SEM). By contrast, gynoparae placed on a seedling of their natal, summer host (broad bean, Vicia faba L.) penetrated the plant for only 39% of the available time, rarely ingested plant sap and never reproduced. The number of nymphs deposited on spindle leaves was not correlated with the occurrence or duration of ingestion from vascular tissues, suggesting that parturition stimulants are detected before feeding, probably during penetration of nonvascular cells. Presentation of an aqueous spindle extract to the aphids in artificial feeding chambers showed that water‐soluble spindle factors evoke stimulation of parturition by gynoparae in 72‐h bioassays. The stimulant was extremely potent, remaining active until the total extracted material was diluted to less than 10 p.p.m. Stylet activities and reproductive responses were also evaluated for summer winged females (alate virginoparae), which have a broad host range, and will colonize both bean and spindle under laboratory conditions. On both of these plant species, virginoparae often ingested plant sap and deposited nymphs during the 6‐h electrical recording experiment (producing 4.60 ± 0.48 offspring on bean; 2.70 ± 0.35 on spindle: mean ± SEM), but no significant correlations were found between reproduction and the occurrence or duration of particular stylet activities. Aqueous host‐plant extracts had no effect on the numbers of offspring deposited by virginoparae in artificial feeding chambers, showing that this form of the aphid is not responsive to the spindle‐derived parturition stimulant. The results highlight the need for more information on the factors determining host acceptance and parturition by polyphagous aphid phenotypes.  相似文献

Abstract Morphologically similar species occur in various groups of insects, including aphid pests. In Europe, Aphis frangulae Kaltenbach and Aphis gossypii Glover (sometimes considered as subspecies) are differentiated usually on the basis of life cycle and host plant. We used a sexual population of A. frangulae collected on the primary host and samples of A. gossypii collected on cucurbits or cotton for the development of molecular markers. DNA sequence data for the gene encoding cytochrome b and for the barcode region of cytochrome oxidase I, as well as a length polymorphism for an intron in the sodium channel para‐type gene discriminated unambiguously between the two taxa. These markers were also used as identification keys for aphids collected on crops belonging to the Solanaceae. The cytochrome b marker differentiates host‐related Aphis gossypii haplotypes, and the para‐type gene intron might be suitable for the resolution of taxonomic problems in other aphid species complexes.  相似文献

Broad bean (Vicia faba), an annual plant bearing extrafloral nectaries (EFN) at the base of the upper leaves, is regularly infested by two aphid species, Aphis fabae and Acyrthosiphon pisum. EFN and A. fabae are commonly attended by the ant, Lasius niger, while Ac. pisum usually remains uninfested. Sugar concentration and sugar composition of extrafloral nectar did not change significantly after aphid infestation. The sugar concentration was significantly higher in EFN (c. 271 µg µl-1) than in the honeydew of A. fabae (37.5 µg µl-1). The presence of small A. fabae colonies had no significant effect on ant attendance of EFN, which remained at the same level as that on plants without A. fabae. Obviously, there was no significant competitive effect between the two sugar sources. We suggest that the high sugar concentration in the extrafloral nectar may outweigh the higher quality (due to the presence of melezitose) and quantity of aphid honeydew. Ants and the presence of EFN influenced aphid colony growth. While A. fabae colonies generally grew better in the presence of ants, Ac. pisum colonies declined on plants with EFN or A. fabae colonies. We conclude that EFN may provide some degree of protection for V. faba against those sucking herbivores that are not able to attract ants.  相似文献

The hoverfly Episyrphus balteatus De Geer (Diptera: Syrphidae) is an abundant and efficient aphid‐specific predator. Several aphidophagous parasitoids and predators are known to respond positively to aphid‐infested plants. Semiochemicals from the latter association usually mediate predator/parasitoid foraging behavior toward sites appropriate for offspring fitness. In this study, we investigated the effect of aphid host plant and aphid species on foraging and oviposition behavior of E. balteatus. Behavioral observations were conducted using the Noldus Observer v. 5.0, which allows observed insect behavior to be subdivided into different stages. Additionally, the influence of aphid species and aphid host plant on offspring fitness was tested in a second set of experiments. Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris and Megoura viciae Buckton were equally attractive for E. balteatus whereas Aphis fabae Scopoli (all Homoptera: Aphididae) were less attractive. These results were correlated with (i) the number of eggs laid, which was significantly higher for the two first aphid species, and (ii) the fitness of hoverfly larvae, pupae, and adults. Two solanaceous plant species, Solanum nigrum L. and Solanum tuberosum L. (Solanaceae), which were infested with Myzus persicae Sulzer (Homoptera: Aphididae), were also compared using the same approach. Discrimination between these two M. persicae host plants was observed, with S. tuberosum being preferred as an oviposition site by the predatory hoverfly. Larval and adult fitness was correlated with the behavioral observations. Our results demonstrated the importance of the prey–host plant association on the choice of the oviposition site by an aphid predator, which is here shown to be related to offspring fitness.  相似文献

The behaviour of summer and autumn winged forms of the black bean aphid, Aphis fabae Scopoli (Homoptera: Aphididae), was compared on two plants utilized at different stages of the insect’s life cycle. Adult autumn migrants (gynoparae) are monophagous, colonizing spindle (Euonymus europaeus), whereas polyphagous summer winged aphids (alate virginoparae) are associated with a variety of herbaceous plants, including broad bean (Vicia faba). When aphids from a single clone were given access to a spindle leaf and a bean seedling in choice tests, many virginoparae settled and larviposited on both plant species over 24 h. By contrast, gynoparae showed a clear preference for spindle, with 93.5% of settled adults and 98.3% of larvae on this plant species. Close‐up video monitoring showed that gynoparae discriminated beans from spindle within a 5‐min period, whereas virginoparae behaved similarly on both plant species. For gynoparae, the major behavioural difference on the two plants appeared after a brief (epidermal) stylet penetration, with many insects taking flight within a few seconds of stylet withdrawal from bean. Factors detected during stylet insertion by gynoparae must therefore inhibit take‐off on spindle. Electrical recording experiments showed that aphids often punctured a cell membrane during brief probes on both plant species, and intracellular stylet activities always included a waveform associated with ingestion. When gynoparae puncture spindle cells their behaviour is probably modified by intracellular metabolites detected via gustation of ingested epidermal cell sap. These cues may inhibit the take‐off reflex which otherwise follows probing.  相似文献

Ratios of volatile phytochemicals potentially offer a means for insects to recognise their host-plant species. However, for this to occur ratios of volatiles would need to be sufficiently consistent between plants and over time to constitute a host-characteristic cue. In this context we collected headspace samples from Vicia faba plants to determine how consistent ratios of key volatile phytochemicals used in host location by one of its insect pests, the black bean aphid, Aphis fabae, were. These were (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, 1-hexanol, benzaldehyde, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, octanal, (Z)-3-hexen-1-yl acetate, (R)-linalool, methyl salicylate, decanal, undecanal, (E)-caryophyllene, (E)-β-farnesene, (S)-germacrene D, and (EE)-4,8,12-trimethyl-1,3,7,11-tridecatetraene, which had previously been found to be electrophysiologically and behaviourally active to A. fabae. Although the quantities of volatiles produced by V. faba showed large between plant and diurnal variation, correlations between quantities of compounds indicated that the ratios of certain pairs of volatiles were very consistent. This suggests that there is a host-characteristic cue available to A. fabae in the form of ratios of volatiles.  相似文献
