The growth process of a living organism is studied with the help of a mathematical model where a part of the surplus power is assumed to be used for growth. In the present study, the basic mathematical framework of the growth process is based on a pioneering theory proposed by von Bertalanffy and his work is the main intellectual driving force behind the present analysis. Considering the existence of an optimum size for which the surplus power becomes maximum, it has been found that the scaling exponent for the intake rate must be smaller than the exponent for the metabolic cost. A relationship among the empirical constants in allometric scaling has also been established on the basis of the fact that an organism never ceases to generate surplus energy. The growth process is found to continue forever, although with a decreasing rate. Beyond the optimum point the percentage of shortfall in energy has been calculated and its dependence on scaling exponents has been determined. The dependence of optimum mass on the empirical constants has been shown graphically. The functional dependence of mass variation on time has been obtained by solving a differential equation based on the concept of surplus energy. The dependence of the growth process on scaling exponent and empirical constants has been shown graphically.  相似文献

Bio-inspired climbing robots relying on adhesion systems are believed to become essential tools for several industrial applications in the near future. In recent years, research has mainly focused on modeling micro-scale adhesion phenomena; a macro-scale adhesion model has however to be developed for the design of macro-scale systems. In this paper a macro-model of adhesion suitable for real-time applications is presented; it relies on a continuous representation of adhesion. An extension of the von Mises criterion is proposed as failure adhesion criterion in order to estimate the occurrence of detachment at any point of the contacting surface. An experimental set up has been designed in order to define the parameters of the model. A semi-automatic process has been developed to ensure repeatability and accuracy of the results. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which has revealed promising adhesive features for robotic use, has been used during the experimental phase. The macro-model of adhesion has been implemented in a multi-body dynamics environment based on Open Dynamics Engine (ODE) to simulate a spider-inspired robot. Simulations based on this model are suitable to represent the behaviour of climbing robots and also to optimize their design.  相似文献

Carter and Caler have produced a 'cumulative damage' model for the fracture of bone, based on creep experiments on human bone, which has been corroborated by monotonic tensile tests on bone, loaded at various strain rates. Monotonic tensile tests on reindeer's antler, which has a lower modulus of elasticity than human bone, produce very similar results. Unlike human bone, reindeer antler always shows a large post-yield strain, and it is possible to distinguish pre-yield and post-yield behaviour. The 'final stiffness' (ultimate stress/ultimate strain) is invariant with strain rate. This is confirmation that bone fractures when a certain amount of damage has accumulated. However, reindeer antler shows a considerable post-yield increase in stress. This is difficult to accommodate in a cumulative damage model.  相似文献

Modes of speciation and the neutral theory of biodiversity   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Hubbell's neutral theory of biodiversity has generated much debate over the need for niches to explain biodiversity patterns. Discussion of the theory has focused on its neutrality assumption, i.e. the functional equivalence of species in competition and dispersal. Almost no attention has been paid to another critical aspect of the theory, the assumptions on the nature of the speciation process. In the standard version of the neutral theory each individual has a fixed probability to speciate. Hence, the speciation rate of a species is directly proportional to its abundance in the metacommunity. We argue that this assumption is not realistic for most speciation modes because speciation is an emergent property of complex processes at larger spatial and temporal scales and, consequently, speciation rate can either increase or decrease with abundance. Accordingly, the assumption that speciation rate is independent of abundance (each species has a fixed probability to speciate) is a more natural starting point in a neutral theory of biodiversity. Here we present a neutral model based on this assumption and we confront this new model to 20 large data sets of tree communities, expecting the new model to fit the data better than Hubbell's original model. We find, however, that the data sets are much better fitted by Hubbell's original model. This implies that species abundance data can discriminate between different modes of speciation, or, stated otherwise, that the mode of speciation has a large impact on the species abundance distribution. Our model analysis points out new ways to study how biodiversity patterns are shaped by the interplay between evolutionary processes (speciation, extinction) and ecological processes (competition, dispersal).  相似文献

The circulating form of atrial natriuretic factor is a 28-residue peptide containing a 17-residue disulphide-linked ring. It has important actions on the kidney, largely on its haemodynamics, and at other sites including the adrenal cortex and CNS. It has a short half-life in vivo and is rapidly inactivated when incubated with kidney microvillar membranes. Of the battery of peptidases present in that membrane, only one, endopeptidase-24.11, is responsible for initiating the attack, and this commences with hydrolysis of the Cys7-Phe8 bond within the ring. Hydrolysis at this and other points has been shown to inactivate the peptide and this information has pointed the way to the synthesis of resistant analogues.  相似文献

Detritus is a central feature in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems. Despite the ubiquity of detritus, ecologists have largely ignored its role in influencing food web structure. We used a meta‐analytic approach to ask three questions about how detritus affects food web structure in a wide variety of ecosystems. First, what is the effect strength of detritus on primary producers, detritivores, herbivores, and predators? Second, what functional role does detritus serve for consumers (energetic, habitat, or both)? Third, how does the effect of detritus on consumers vary between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems? We found that detritus has strong positive effects on primary producers and consumers in a wide range of ecosystems types. Detritus has a positive direct effect on detritivores by providing both an energetic resource and habitat (refuge from predators). Detritus has equally strong positive effects on herbivores and predators, driven by a positive direct effect of habitat. Detritus has positive effects on consumers in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems with 1.7 times stronger effects in terrestrial ecosystems. These results suggest that detritus has strong effects on food‐web structure in a variety of ecosystem types. Even the portion of the food web that is linked most strongly to living plant tissue as its primary energy source is strongly positively affected.  相似文献

We investigate the effect of the width of ventilation-perfusion distributions on arterial blood oxygen content. We assume that the perfusion within the alveolar volume is a continuous function of ventilation-perfusion ratio, known as the continuous ventilation-perfusion distribution, and then write down the conservation of mass equations in the lung incorporating the nonlinear relationship between oxygen concentration in the gas phase and blood oxygen content. We solve these equations for various unimodal and bimodal ventilation-perfusion distributions believed to occur in practice and calculate the arterial blood oxygen content in each case. When a subject has a unimodal ventilation-perfusion distribution we show that the fraction of cardiac output to that mode (i.e. the fraction of non-shunted blood) has a large effect on arterial oxygen blood content. However, the width of the distribution has only a negligible effect on arterial oxygen blood content. For a bimodal ventilation-perfusion distribution the location and fraction of cardiac output to each mode has a large effect on arterial oxygen blood content. Again, the width of each mode of the distribution has little effect on arterial oxygen blood content. As a result there is little point, from a clinical perspective, in developing techniques for investigating the width of modes of these distributions since all relevant clinical information is contained in the nature (i.e. unimodal or bimodal) and in the location of the modes.  相似文献

黑木耳在我国已经有1 000多年栽培历史,是我国最重要的栽培真菌之一,多年来我国黑木耳的学名一直使用模式产地为欧洲的Auricularia auricula-judae。最近的研究表明A. auricula-judae实际为一复合种,该复合种在全球范围内有5个种。其中A. auricula-judae仅分布于欧洲;美洲有2个种,生长在针叶树上的美洲木耳A. americana和生长在阔叶树上的尚未命名的木耳。中国该类群有3个种:自然分布和栽培最广泛的黑木耳的学名应为A. heimuer,此外,短毛木耳A. villosula在我国东北也广泛分布,并有少量栽培,生长针叶树上的木耳为美洲木耳A. americana,主要分布于中国东北和华北。  相似文献

A graph of ion flux across a membrane against the ionic concentration on one side of the membrane which has a shape similar to that given by the Michaelis-Menten equation has often been considered to indicate that ion movement is carrier-mediated rather than diffusional.The dependence of unidirectional and net ion fluxes upon the concentration ratio across the membrane has been investigated here for purely diffusional processes, on the basis of several models. The graph sometimes has a Michaelis-Menten shape, and it is concluded that in some systems at least, such a shape can be explained without postulating the presence of a carrier. A test which can help in elucidating the nature of ion permeation is described.  相似文献

This paper is a review of most of the research work on fish that has been carried out by the Freshwater Biological Association, and includes not only what has been done at Windermere, but also some past work carried out elsewhere. However, current work at the River Laboratory, which is now a separate establishment, has been excluded.
The history of the Association i s traced from its formation in 1929 and its first laboratory at Wray Castle, to its present quarters at the Ferry House. Thc pre-war work of Allen on trout, perch and salmon is described and an account is given of the war time research and fishery for eels and perch, and of how this has led to the experimental removal of perch and pike from Windermere on a large scale. The physiological research, and work on trout fry, on char and other species, as well as many subsidiary investigations, are mentioned. As far as possible brief summaries of the main results are given for most of the 99 papers mentioiicd.  相似文献

Influence of retabolilum, biossedum and corpus vitreum on the inflammation and reparation in the rat heart with experimental infarction has been investigated. It is shown that retabolilum has the most pronounced reparation effect. At the same time biossedum has a slight effect on the reparative processes and corpus vitreum does not influence it al all. It is also found that the most pronounced action of retabolilum has been observed by the 12th day of infarction.  相似文献

Trichomycterus celsae n. sp. and Trichomycterus lewi n. sp. are described from the river Kukenán a tributary of the river Caroní, Orinoco basin, Guyana Shield, Venezuela. The new species are diagnosed within the Guyana Shield Trichomycterus species by a distinctive color pattern. Trichomycterus celsae has a uniform light brown color on dorsum and sides of the body; the ventral surface is yellowish or creamy. Trichomycterus lewi has an irregular pattern of black spots of different sizes on dorsum and sides of the body, the larger spots are located at the posterior part of the body, and, the ventral surface is whitish. The osteology of the new species showed that they belong to the genus Trichomycterus. Osteological features support the external diagnosis of both species, some of them are: in T. celsae, the skull has the fontanels well separated, T. lewi has the fontanels closer and joined by a narrow canal. In T. celsae, the dorsal border of the hyomandibula has a conspicuous notch. In T. lewi, the metapterygoid has a projection on the posteroventral angle. Neural spine of the first preural centra is more elongated in T. lewi.  相似文献

Valinomycin is a highly flexible cyclic dodecadepsipeptide that transports ions across membranes. Such a flexibility in the conformation is required for its biological function since it has to encounter a variety of environments and liganding state. Exploration of conformational space of this molecule is therefore important and is one of the objectives of the present study that has been carried out by means of high temperature Molecular Dynamics. Further, the stability of the known bracelet-like structure of the uncomplexed valinomycin and the inherent flexibility around this structure has been investigated. The uncomplexed form of valinomycin has been simulated at 75-100 K for 1 ns in order to elucidate the average conformational properties. An alanine-analog of valinomycin has been simulated under identical conditions in order to evaluate the effect of sidechain on the conformational properties, The studies confirm the effect of sidechain on conformational equilibrium.  相似文献

A method of analysis for comparing the variability of two samples drawn from two populations has been developed. The method is also suitable for the nonnumeric form of data. A test based on ordered observations for testing the null hypothesis of equality of two variances has been given. The test statistic is a function of the sum of ranks assigned to smaller size sample. Ranking procedure has been modified to depict the variability in the data by the sum of ranks. The null distribution of the test-statistic has been worked out for small samples and it turns out to be chi-square distribution for large samples. The analytical procedure has been explained by a numerical example on the productivity and production of rice and wheat in India from 1950–51 to 1983–84.  相似文献

A high-performance liquid chromatographic procedure is described for the determination of octopamine. The method, which is based on the separation on a microparticulate bonded strong cation-exchange resin and measurement of the native fluorescence, has been applied to give a sensitive assay of dopamine β-monooxygenase (EC 1.14.17.1) activity in human serum with tyramine as the substrate. The procedure, which has been designed for use with an-automatic sampler, has a detection limit of about 50 pmoles of octopamine, and the analysis time is approximately 10 min per sample.  相似文献

The paper is a brief account of aspartic proteinases' structural studies developed in V.A. Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology during the last 3 years. The work on porcine pepsin has been finalized after the refinement of the monoclinic crystal form at 1.8 A resolution performed in collaboration with the group of protein structure and function studies of the University of Alberta in Canada. An important structural property of chymosin which explains the enzyme specificity has been found. Protein engineering work on chymosin is being developed. The structural template for aspartic proteinases has been elucidated and on the basis of this template the model of HIV-1 protease molecule has been built. Some approaches to the design of HIV-1 protease inhibitors were elucidated.  相似文献

Research on calcium-triggered exocytosis has converged on the fusion pore as a critical kinetic intermediate. Using sensitive biophysical methods to record signals from living cells in the act of releasing neurotransmitter or hormone has provided clues about the structure and composition of fusion pores. The dynamics of fusion pore opening, closing, and dilating has revealed how specific proteins transduce a calcium binding signal to catalyze membrane fusion. The fusion pore determines how rapidly neurotransmitter is expelled from a vesicle into the synaptic cleft. This rate places constraints on the form of a synaptic response during different modes of release.  相似文献
