The basic knowledge of the seasonal occurrence of mites can supply data for elaboration of programs of ecological management to be implanted with success in the future. The objective of this study was to determine the species richness and the seasonality of mites present in two areas of rubber tree crops neighboring to native areas in Itiquira, MT. Along one year, 25 quantitative samplings were accomplished in rubber tree crop neighboring to two fragments of Cerrado (Cerrad?o and Mata Ripária). There were registered 199,380 mites, of 48 species, belonging to 15 families. Of those, 13 species are phytophagous, 18 predators and 17 mycophagous or of unknown alimentary habit. Three phytophagous species represented more than 97% of the mites collected: Phyllocoptruta seringueirae Feres (80.8%), Tenuipalpus heveae Baker (12.7%) and Calacarus heveae Feres (3.6%). Among the predators, the most abundant species were Agistemus sp., Scirula sp. and Euseius concordis (Chant). Twenty-eight species were common to both crops. The families that had the largest number of species collected in the neighboring area to Cerrad?o were Tydeidae (7), Tarsonemidae (6), Eriophyidae and Phytoseiidae (4), and in the area close to Mata Ripária, Tydeidae (9) and Phytoseiidae (8). The presence of vegetation near the crop should explain the great number of species of mites classified as accidental found in this study. The largest abundances and species richness occurred in the end of the rainy season and beginning of the dry season.  相似文献

The study was carried out to evaluate the effect of some insecticides and fungicides on the interaction between predacious mites of the families Phytoseiidae and Stigmaeidae on citrus. Euseius citrifolius Denmark and Muma, Euseius concordis (Chant) (Phytoseiidae), and Agistemus aff. bakeri (Stigmaeidae) were the most abundant species of predacious mites. No significant reduction of the population of stigmaeids was detected following the pesticide treatment. On the contrary, the population of those mites increased after the application of methidathion, petroleum oil, deltamethrin, cupric oxychloride and cuprous oxide, as compared to the population of those mites in the control plots. The chemicals promoting increased stigmaeid populations are some of those that promoted reduction of phytoseiid populations. A significant negative correlation was found between the numbers of phytoseiids and stigmaeids on citrus leaves immediately before treatments, and 33, 50, 83 and 105 days after treatment. A clear negative linear correlation between the number of predacious mites from both families was detected for benomyl, cupric oxychloride, cuprous oxide, thiophanate methyl, and control. Phytoseiid-stigmaeid interaction on citrus orchard is discussed.  相似文献

Quarterly samples were done in 2001 on three rubber tree plantation in the northwest of the state of S?o Paulo. Three rubber trees of each locality were sampled. Between the rows of rubber tree four species of spontaneous euphorbiaceous were collected: Chamaesyce hirta, C. hyssopifolia, Euphorbia heterophylla and Phyllanthus tenellus. A total of 8.954 mites of 38 species, belonging to 31 genera of 11 families were collected. Tydeidae and Phytoseiidae had the highest diversity of species, 9 and 7, respectively. The most abundant families were Eriophyidae (3.594), Tydeidae (2.825) and Tenuipalpidae (1.027). The most abundant species on the rubber trees were: phytophagous - Calacarus heveae Feres, Tenuipalpus heveae Baker, Lorryia sp.2, Lorryia formosa Cooreman and Lorryia sp.1; predators - Zetzellia quasagistemas Hernandes & Feres, Pronematus sp., Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma and Euseius citrifolius Denmark & Muma. Among the spontaneous euphorbiaceous, predatory mites were abundantly found on C. hirta and E. heterophylla, mainly Pronematus sp. and E. citrifolius, suggesting that these plants could be important in the maintenance of these predators in the rubber tree cultivation areas. However, plants that can shelter predators and at the same time exert strong competition (nutrients, water etc) to rubber trees, can not be recommended for pest management programs. Studies about competition between rubber trees and spontaneous plants need to be conducted for feasible efficient programs of environmental management, aiming at the control of pest mites of rubber tree.  相似文献

Mite infestations to the culture of mate-tea frequently causes losses by the premature fall of the leaves. So, it is necessary to monitor the population of these arthropods, and to adopt management strategies for their control. The objective of this research was to evaluate the trustworthiness of presence-absence sampling for Oligonychus yothersi (McGregor) on mate-tea orchard. This study was conducted in Cascavel, Paraná State, from April 2001 to July 2000, in a mate-tea tree commercial plantation. Biweekly sampling of 240 leaves were collected in different parts of 10 plants, and the number of mites was counted. The aggregation pattern was determined through the coefficients a and b of Taylor's power law. The proportion of infested leaves and the number of required samples were estimated through mathematical model. The mite O. yothersi presented aggregate distribution. The proportion of infested leaves calculated by means of mathematical model showed to be a trustworthy parameter to estimate the population density of the mite. The number of required samples was small, making feasible the practical application of the presence-absence sampling method for O. yothersi in the culture of mate-tea.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate phytophagous and predatory mites associated with vegetable plants in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Eight phytophagous and 10 predacious mites were collected from 14 species of vegetable crops covering five major production localities. Out of these 18 mite species, 13 species are new to the mite fauna of Saudi Arabia. In addition, the two species, Tenuipalpus punicae and Agistemus exsertus, are reported for the first time on vegetable crops in Saudi Arabia. For each mite species found, notes on host plant association and occurrence period are given. An illustrated key for the identification of the 18 mite species reported in this study is provided and this can be used to improve the IPM programs by applying the local natural predatory mites in controlling mite pests in Saudi Arabia.  相似文献

Seven citrus orchards on reduced- to no-pesticide spray programs were sampled for predacious mites in the families Eupalopsellidae and Stigmaeidae (Acari: Prostigmata) in central and south central Florida. Inner and outer canopy leaves, fruit, twigs, and trunk scrapings were sampled monthly between August 1994 and January 1996. Open flowers were sampled in March from five of the sites. Two species of eupalopsellid mites (Exothorhis caudata Summers and Saniosulus harteni (van-Dis and Ueckermann)) were identified from 252 specimens collected within citrus tree canopies within the seven citrus orchards of which 249 were E. caudata. Only two E. caudata were collected from ground cover plants within five of the seven orchards. Eight species of Stigmaeidae were identified from 5,637 specimens: Agistemus floridanus Gonzalez, A. terminalis Gonzalez, Eustigmaeus arcuata (Chandhri), E. sp. near arcuata, E. segnis (Koch), Mediostigmaeus citri (Rakha and McCoy), Stigmaeus seminudus Wood, and Zetzellia languida Gonzalez were collected from within citrus tree canopies from seven orchard sites. Agistemus floridanus was the only species in either family that was abundant with 5,483 collected from within citrus tree canopies compared with only 39 from vine or ground cover plants. A total of 431 samples from one or more of 82 vines and ground cover plants were sampled monthly between September 1994 and January 1996 in five of these orchards and one or more eupalopsellids or stigmaeids were collected from 19 of these plants. Richardia brasiliensis (Meg.) Gomez had nine A. floridanus from 5 of 25 samples collected from this plant. Solanum sp. had five A. floridanus from three samples taken. Both eupalopsellid and stigmaeid species numbers represented <1 % of the total numbers of phytoseiid species taken from the same plants. The two remaining orchards were on full herbicide programs and ground cover plants were absent. Agistemus floridanus was more abundant in the citrus orchards with on-going or recent herbicide programs compared with orchards having well-developed ground cover plants. Agistemus floridanus was most abundant on inner leaves between January and April and again during September through November. Additional collection records of E. caudata, S. harteni, A. terminalis, M. citri, Z. languida, and Zetzellia sp. near silvicola within Florida citrus orchards between 1989 and 2004 are included. Four species of Eupalopsellidae and ten species of Stigmaeidae occur within Florida citrus orchards.  相似文献

The effect of dust on phytophagous mite numbers was examined in five apple orchards situated in the dry, inland apple producing Ceres area, South Africa. The study was conducted over three seasons. The season with the most dust had the least number of mites. There was no relationship between the amount of dust on leaves and mite numbers from different orchards. Of the 15 correlations between the amount of dust on individual trees and the number of mites on these trees, two were marginally not significant and one was highly significant, but negative. Therefore, seasons during which there is a lot of dust did not result in mite outbreaks nor did dusty orchards harbour elevated mite population levels, and trees with a lot of dust did not necessarily harbour more mites than trees with less dust. However, if there is enough dust to cause stress to the trees, phytophagous mite outbreaks could occur.  相似文献

Rubber pest mites, Calacarus heveae and Tenuipalpus heveae, reach economic damage levels at the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the dry season in Brazil. Therefore, low humidity adaptation might be an important characteristic for predatory mites to successfully control pest organisms. This study determined the effect of the relative humidity (RH) levels of 30–100% on the hatching of larvae of Amblyseius acalyphus, Euseius citrifolius, Iphiseiodes zuluagai, Metaseiulus camelliae, Agistemus floridanus and Zetzellia malvinae at 25 ± 0.5 °C. These predatory mites are common on rubber trees in the state of São Paulo and might be used for introduction in the major rubber tree production regions in the state of Mato Grosso. At 70% RH or higher, viability was 70% or higher for all species, indicating that their performance might be higher during the rainy season than during the dry season. Eggs of E. citrifolius and M. camelliae presented higher viability at the lower relative humidity levels than those of other species, indicating that these species might have higher chance to persist in the dry season. It is suggested that M. camelliae should be further evaluated for introduction in the state of Mato Grosso, considering that this mite is not yet present in that area.  相似文献

We observed the number of predatory mites (Phytoseiidae:Typhlodromus caudiglans) on the foliage of 20 North American species of grapes (Vitis spp) plus the domesticated EuropeanVitis vinifera, all grown in a common garden. We found relatively few phytophagous mites. The numbers of phytophagous mites were not correlated with the plant characteristics that we measured. We found approximately five times as many predatory mites as phytophagous mites and the numbers of these phytoseiid predators were not affected by the availability of prey. Similarly, numbers of phytoseiids were unaffected by plant gender and, hence, the availability of pollen, another source of food. The numbers of phytoseiids were not clustered according to the taxonomic grouping of the tested plant species. Leaf surface characteristics explained over 25% of the variance in the numbers of phytoseiids. Numbers of phytoseiids were positively associated with the density of vein hairs, the density of bristles in leaf axils, and the presence of leaf domatia. These results suggest that sheltered habitats rather than food availability may limit the numbers of phytoseiid mites on grapevines.  相似文献

A survey of the pathogenic fungi associated with mites on cassava in Benin, West Africa, revealed both geographical and seasonal variation in the presence of Neozygites cf. floridana (Weiser and Muma) and Hirsutella thompsonii Fisher on Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar) and Oligonychus gossypii (Zacher). Few dead and infected mites were found during the dry season, regardless of vegetation zone. In three of 30 surveyed sites, N. floridana was found infecting 1% of the dead M. tanajoa and 2% of the dead O. gossypii, while H. thompsonii was observed infecting 20% of the dead M. tanajoa in a single site. The frequency of sites having infected mites during the wet season was 3.5 times greater than that seen during the dry season. N. floridana infected 10% of the dead M. tanajoa and 19% of the dead O. gossypii on young leaves. Mites infected with N. floridana were found either in the coastal Southern Forest Mosaic (SFM) or in the Northern Guinea Savanna vegetation zones. N. floridana was rare in the low mite densities associated with mature leaves. H. thompsonii was found on 19% and 29% of the dead M. tanajoa on young and mature leaves respectively. All M. tanajoa infected with H. thompsonii on young leaves and mature leaves (75%) were found in the SFM. A single M. tanajoa was the only infected mite found in the Southern Guinea Savanna. Relatively few O. gossypii were infected with H. thompsonii. N. floridana and H. thompsonii were found together in three sites, but never on the same host. Phytoseiids were never found infected with either pathogen. In a regression analysis, the number of dead mites was significantly estimated from the total number of mites for both species, regardless of leaf age. The numbers of dead M. tanajoa on mature leaves were also estimated from the proportion infected with H. thompsonii. The numbers of infected mites on young leaves were estimated from their association with the SFM for M. tanajoa infected with H. thompsonii, and from total mites for O. gossypii infected with N. floridana. On mature leaves, infected mite numbers were estimated from the numbers of dead M. tanajoa infected with H. thompsonii. The merit of introducing more virulent or better adapted isolates of N. floridana to control M. tanajoa in Africa is discussed.  相似文献

Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma is an important predator of Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) on citrus in Brazil. The suitability of Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) as a food source of I. zuluagai in laboratory rearing was investigated at 25.5 +/- 0.5 masculineC, 88 +/- 7% RU and photophase of 12h. Initially, levels of oviposition of the predator fed on eggs were evaluated, as well as the dead or live post-embryonic stages of T. putrescentiae, in a period of 10 days. The daily oviposition rate was 1.3 egg per female when they were fed on eggs on T. putrescentiae, 0.7 egg per female when they were fed on dead post embryonic stages and about 0.3 egg per female when they were fed on live post-embryonic stages. Later, the life table of I. zuluagai was constructed, when eggs of T. putrescentiae were offered to the predators as prey. The immature stages were observed every 8h, to determine the corresponding durations. In the adult phase, the mites were observed every 24h, to determine the reproductive parameters. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m) was 0.11 female/ female/day; resulting in a finite rate of increase of 1.11 (l). The net reproductive rate (R0) was 7.1 females/generation, with a mean generation time (T) 18.6 days. The results show that T. putrescentiae is a favorable food source for the development of I. zuluagai.  相似文献

Foliage-inhabiting mites and associated insects were observed over a 3-year period on abandoned apple trees at two sites in southern Ontario. This study included species diversity and seasonal dynamics as well as the total habitat size and its seasonal fluctuations. Due to heavy feeding on the leaves in the early season by the fall cankerworm, at one observation site, the habitat available for foliage-inhabiting mites was regulated so that both the total number and the area of leaves on the tree did not increase significantly until early July. However, the influence of this on the population of the dominant mite species was minimal. The mite community was relatively stable over time. Four phytophagous species, representing a basic trophic level, were fed upon by a group of predacious mites. The phytophagous mites consisted of two rust-mite species (Diptacus gigantorhynchus sp. complex andEriophyes pyri sp. complex) and two tetranychid species (Bryobia rubrioculus andEotetranychus uncatus). On the basis of consistency in seasonal abundance,D. gigantorhynchus was the only prey species which could support the early-season population increase of the predacious mites. Ten species of predacious mites were recorded on the apple trees, nine phytoseiids and one stigmaeid; two separate species of these were common at each of two observation sites:Typhlodromus pomi and the stigmaeidZetzellia mali at one site; and two phytoseiid species,Phytoseius macropilis andAmblyseius finlandicus, at the other. There seemed to be a rather simple and stable prey/predator system at each site throughout the three seasons. Species dominance on these apple trees was investigated for the phytoseiids, especially from the perspective of the issue of one-species dominance.  相似文献

Although associations between mites and leaf domatia have been widely reported, their consequences for plants, especially for natural tree populations, particularly in the tropics, are largely unknown. In experiments with paired Cupania vernalis (Sapindaceae) saplings in a semi-deciduous forest in south-east Brazil, we blocked leaf domatia to examine their effect: (1) on mites and other arthropods, and (2) on damage caused by fungi and herbivorous arthropods. In general, plants with resin-blocked domatia had fewer predaceous mites on leaves than control plants with unaltered domatia, but the total abundances of fungivorous and of phytophagous mites remained unchanged. However, phytophagous eriophyid mites, the most numerous inhabitants of domatia, decreased on leaf surfaces with the blocking treatment. In a second experiment, treated plants lacking functional domatia developed significantly greater numbers and areas of chlorosis, apparently due to increased eriophyid attacks, whereas fungal attack, epiphyll abundance and leaf-area loss were unaffected. This seems to be the first experimental study to demonstrate that leaf domatia can benefit plants against herbivory in a natural system. The possible stabilizing effect of leaf domatia on predator-prey interactions is discussed.  相似文献

Predatory mites of the family Phytoseiidae include several species of importance as biological control agents of phytophagous mites in various crops including apples. We report on the post-harvest presence of the motiles of two species, Typhlodromus occidentalis and Typhlodromus pyri, in the calyx cavities of apple fruits of three cultivars. The mean numbers of motiles per fruit were as high as 6.10. The phytoseiid densities were lowest in cv. Bonza and tended to be greater in samples taken in late autumn, particularly in cv. Red Delicious. No significant effect (p > 0.05) was observed for different insecticide treatments. Phytoseiids remained present within fruits of cv. Granny Smith left on the orchard floor in winter. Together with an observed reduction in the numbers of T. occidentalis in the early spring, this suggests that fruits constitute an overwintering refuge. The findings are discussed in relation to the implications for biological control, in particular the minimization of the removal of natural enemies from orchards. This revised version was published online in November 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

An account is given of the control of the grain mite Acarus siro L. (= Tyroglyphus farinae L.) by the predatory mite Cheyletus sp. in imported wheat stored in bags or in bulk. After 12–18 months of storage Cheyletus sp. had developed in 75% of the parcels of wheat and in 67% of these it became dominant over other mites. This usually occurred in late summer for bagged wheat. Control of A. siro by Cheyletus sp. compared favourably with that achieved by fumigation with methyl bromide and on occasion was superior. Both development and dominance of Cheyletus sp. were adversely affected by earlier fumigation but there was some evidence that spraying wheat with γ-BHC favoured the development of this species and, in some circumstances, its dominance. Dominance by Cheyletus sp. in bulk grain often occurred in the winter months when the surface moisture content of the wheat was at its highest.
The development of Cheyletus eruditus Schr. is described in a bulk grain store where dense populations of A. siro and Glycyphagus destructor Schr. were eliminated by the predator. The numbers of C. eruditus in wheat tended to increase faster when the surface layers were disturbed than when the grain was undisturbed. Nevertheless, dominance over the other mites tended to occur first in undisturbed grain.  相似文献

Aerial dispersal of European red mite, Panonychus ulmi (Koch), in commercial apple orchards was estimated by trapping windborne mites. Studies were conducted at four orchards in eastern New York during 1989 and 1990 and at three orchards in western New York during 1989. In each orchard mites were trapped in three locations; the interior of the orchard, at the border of the orchard and in a field or woodlot beyond the orchard. Large numbers of mites were captured, even when the numbers of mites on apple foliage were well below levels where mite injury to leaves was visible (less than five per leaf). The log numbers of mites trapped were linearly related to the log density of mites on leaves and this relationship was consistent for each year and region the study was conducted. The trap captures among the three locations in and outside an orchard were highly correlated. The implications these findings may have on metapopulation dynamics and resistance to acaricide dynamics are discussed.  相似文献

Acarine regulators of water hyacinth in Kerala (India)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Screening of the mite fauna on water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes, at 25 localities throughout Kerala (India) yielded a list of 21 phytophagous species from nine families. Distribution of mites at these localities and type of injury produced suggested that Oligonychus biharensis and Orthogalumna terebrantis warrant further study. In an experimental set-up the injury caused by these mites was quantified. Infestation by Ol. biharensis lead to reduced photosynthesis by the host (significant loss in chlorophyll content). Injurious effects of Or. terebrantis involved leaf mining by the developing instars leading to wilting of the leaves resulting in reduced dry weight. The relative merits of the two species as potential control agents of water hyacinth are discussed.  相似文献

Outbreaks of the red spider mite (Oligonychus coffeae Nietn.), the purple mite (Calacarus carinatus Green) and the scarlet mite (Brevipalpus californicus Banks) of tea were closely associated with the monthly rainfall pattern. Peak numbers occurred during the intermonsoonal dry periods. The relationship between mite numbers and the rainfall pattern suggests that control measures should commence at the end of the first month after the dry season begins. More red spider mites, but fewer purple mites, occurred on tea grown under shaded conditions. Observations on the relationship between scarlet mite numbers and shade were inconclusive. It is suggested that, in addition to direct effects of rainfall and shade, mite numbers are determined by certain biochemical processes that take place within the tea leaves.  相似文献
