A neural architecture is presented that encodes the visual space inside and outside of a shape. The contours of a shape are propagated across an excitable neuronal map and fed through a set of orientation columns, thus creating a pattern which can be viewed as a vector field. This vector field is then burned as synaptic, directional connections into a propagation map, which will serve as a “shape map”. The shape map identifies its own, preferred input when it is translated, deformed, scaled and fragmented, and discriminates other shapes very distinctively. Encoding visual space is much more efficient for shape recognition than determining contour geometry only. 相似文献

Categorization and categorical perception have been extensively studied, mainly in vision and audition. In the haptic domain, our ability to categorize objects has also been demonstrated in earlier studies. Here we show for the first time that categorical perception also occurs in haptic shape perception. We generated a continuum of complex shapes by morphing between two volumetric objects. Using similarity ratings and multidimensional scaling we ensured that participants could haptically discriminate all objects equally. Next, we performed classification and discrimination tasks. After a short training with the two shape categories, both tasks revealed categorical perception effects. Training leads to between-category expansion resulting in higher discriminability of physical differences between pairs of stimuli straddling the category boundary. Thus, even brief training can alter haptic representations of shape. This suggests that the weights attached to various haptic shape features can be changed dynamically in response to top-down information about class membership. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of temperatureon carbonation perception in carbonated spring water and todetermine the influence of the degree of panel training on thiseffect. Spring water was carbonated to two carbonation levels,2.4 and 3.0 volumes CO2. The samples were served at 3, 10, 16and 22°C, and evaluated by both trained and naive panels.Two assessing conditions, swallowing and expectoration, wereemployed to rate samples. Carbonation intensity was perceivedto be higher at lower temperatures than at higher temperatures,even after having taken into account the fact that there wasless CO2 in the samples at higher temperatures. This effectheld true for both naive and trained panels. The temperatureeffect on carbonation perception was carbonation level dependent;differences were more evident at the higher carbonation level. 相似文献

Facial appearance signals information about an individual, and one trait in particular is vitally important for social interaction and mate choice decisions: physical health. Facial cues to health can be divided into two broad classes - facial shape, which is linked to previous health and is relatively fixed; and facial colouration, which changes over the short-term, reflecting current health. These cue classes in themselves give insight into the kinds of health condition valued by human observers when making social inferences. Here, using novel and generalizable methods, the influence of these cue classes on health perception and their link to a measure of general health are examined. Study One employs a Brunswik lens model approach, finding that observers utilise exclusively shape cues to judge health, and that of these shape cues, only averageness is related to a measure of self-reported general health. Study Two shows that when averageness and carotenoid colouration are varied together, both make separable contributions to perceived health, but that averageness explains a larger proportion of variance. Taken together, these results indicate that humans may have evolved to favour cues to previous condition when judging health, because they are more valid. However, the findings also suggest that the role of facial appearance in perceiving health is more complex than previously thought, with different cues potentially reflecting specific aspects of physiological health. 相似文献

In this paper, I focus on the role of active touch in three aspects of shape perception and discrimination studies. First an overview is given of curvature discrimination experiments. The most prominent result is that first-order stimulus information (that is, the difference in attitude or slope over the stimulus) is the dominant factor determining the curvature threshold. Secondly, I compare touch under bimanual and two-finger performance with unimanual and one-finger performance. Consistently, bimanual or two-finger performance turned out to be worse. The most likely explanation for the former finding is that a loss of accuracy during intermanual comparisons is owing to interhemispheric relay. Thirdly, I address the presence of strong after-effects after just briefly touching a shape. These after-effects have been measured and studied in various conditions (such as, static, dynamic, transfer to other hand or finger). Combination of the results of these studies leads to the insight that there are possibly different classes of after-effect: a strong after-effect, caused by immediate contact with the stimulus, that does only partially transfer to the other hand, and one much less strong after-effect, caused by moving over the stimulus for a certain period, which shows a full transfer to other fingers. 相似文献

Studies show that while the cortical mechanisms of two-dimensional (2D) form and motion processing are similar in touch and vision, the mechanisms of three-dimensional (3D) shape processing are different. 2D form and motion are processed in areas 3b and 1 of SI cortex by neurons with receptive fields (RFs) composed of excitatory and inhibitory subregions. 3D shape is processed in area 2 and SII and relies on the integration of cutaneous and proprioceptive inputs. The RFs of SII neurons vary in size and shape with heterogeneous structures consisting of orientation-tuned fingerpads mixed with untuned excitatory or inhibitory fingerpads. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the neurons to cutaneous inputs changes with hand conformation. We hypothesize that these RFs are the kernels underlying tactile object recognition. 相似文献

This paper proposes a biologically plausible matching method to recognize general shapes based on contour curvature information. The human visual system recognizes general shapes flexibly in real-world scenes through the ventral pathway. The pathway is typically modeled using artificial neural networks. These network models, however, do not construct a shape representation that satisfies the following required constraints: (1) The original shape should be represented by a group of partitioned contours in order to retrieve the whole shape (global information) from the partial contours (local information). (2) Coarse and fine structures of the original shapes should be individually represented in order for the visual system to respond to shapes as quickly as possible based on the least number of their features, and to discriminate between shapes based on detailed information. (3) The shape recognition realized with an artificial visual system should be invariant to geometric transformation such as expansion, rotation, or shear. In this paper, we propose a visual shape representation with geometrically characterized contour partitions described on multiple spatial scales. 相似文献

Summary Organisms react to objective properties of bodies in their visual field instead of to the perpetually changing retinal images of those bodies. We show how such a faculty can be mechanized. The organism synthesizes an internal model of the external object, that is a bundle of expectations of how the visual input will transform in response to the organism's exploratory movements. We deduce the necessary structure of the internal model and we show how the organism can extract this structure from the invariant features of the sensory input transformations. With this internal model it is possible to predict the subsequent aspects (contours) of the visual object as the spatial relations of organism and object change. 相似文献

The thresholds of recognition of line drawings of common objects were measured using the Gollin-test procedure, in which separate random line fragments are displayed cumulatively up to the point of recognition. It was shown that the mean percentage of contour displayed at threshold recognition for different images was always about 12.5%, despite inter-subject variability between 5% and 25%. The comparative and spatial-frequency analysis of the geometrical parameters of images was carried out for different levels of fragmentation (before threshold, at threshold, and for the complete contour). The magnitude information of the Fourier domain image of figures was characterized by maximum at low and high levels of fragmentation, but at recognition threshold fragmentation it was characterized by minimum variability. 相似文献

A trained sensory panel assessed flavour and sweetness intensity in solutions containing varying concentrations of hydroxy propyl methylcellulose (HPMC), sugar and flavour volatile. The flavour and sweetness of the viscous solutions were rated using magnitude estimation with a controlled modulus. In addition, the concentration of volatile released on the breath was measured using MS Nose. For low concentrations of HPMC (<0.5 g/100 g), perceived flavour intensity remained the same; however, a steady decrease was noted at higher concentrations (>0.6 g/100 g). The change in perceived intensity occurred at the point of random coil overlap (c(*)) for this hydrocolloid. The perceived sweetness of the solution showed a similar pattern with increasing HPMC concentration, although the inflection at c(*) was not so obvious. Despite the change in perceived flavour intensity, the actual concentration of volatile measured on the breath was not affected by the change in HPMC concentration. Low-order polynomial models were produced to describe perceived flavour intensity and sweetness in viscous solutions containing HPMC and potential explanations for the changes in perception are discussed. 相似文献

It is well established that both the emotional tone of sensory stimuli and the personality characteristics of an individual can bias sensory perception. What has largely been unexplored is whether the current emotional state of an individual has a similar effect, and how it works together with other factors. Here we carry out a comprehensive study to examine how olfactory perception is affected by the emotional tone of the stimuli, and the personality and current emotional state of the individual. Subjects reported experiencing happiness, sadness, negativity/hostility and neutrality when exposed to corresponding emotionally themed video clips, and in each case, smelled a suprathreshold pleasant, an unpleasant and a neutral odorant. The time taken for the subject to detect each odorant and the olfactory intensity were recorded. We found that women detected the pleasant odorant faster than the neutral one. In addition, personality modulated reaction time and olfactory intensity, such that neurotic and anxious individuals were selectively biased toward affective rather than neutral odorants. Finally, current emotional state augmented intensity in men but not in women, and differentially influenced the response time. These findings provided new insights into the effects of emotion and personality on olfactory perception. 相似文献

Although several authors have suggested that visibility affectsterritorial behavior, there have been few systematic studiesof this phenomenon. Here we review five ways that visibilitymight influence the use and defense of space in territorialanimals, and then we discuss a laboratory study on the effectof visibility on territory size and shape. Juvenile lizardswere allowed to establish territories in two habitats identicalexcept for a visual obstacle that bisected one of the two habitats.Lizards in the habitat with good visibility defended compactterritories of a size comparable to those in the field. In contrast,those in the low-visibility situation avoided territories thatincluded the visibility barrier and instead chose either verysmall or highly elongated territories. Territories with goodvisibility probably cost less to defend than those with poorvisibility; territory owners may also prefer high-visibilityterritories because they reduce predation risk or increase foragingsuccess. 相似文献

We compared the results of recognition of fragmented contour images in the presence of noise and without noise. Both the contour images and the visual noise were synthesized with Gabor elements. The spacing between fragments in contour images and between noise elements, as well as the sizes of images, varied irrespective of one another. The percentage of recognition did not depend on the size of stimuli, but it differed for various objects in the presence and absence of noise. The percentage of recognition was higher for images with lots of turns in the absence of noise and, on the contrary, for images with lengthy contours with a lightly varying curvature in the presence of noise. The thresholds of recognition in noise depended, in general, on the ratio of the spacing between the elements in noise to the spacing between contour fragments. 相似文献

Certain oxidizing agents such as vitaminK(VK) and lipid peroxides were found to suppress an increase in cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration by growth factors, and inhibit on cell proliferation. These oxidizing agents induced a marked change in cell shape. In a detailed analysis of each phase in the cell cycle, the inhibition of an increase in cytoplasmic Ca2+ and cell division occurred only when the agents were added at G0/G1 phase. The addition to S or M phase cells did not influence in cytoplasmic Ca2+ and cell division. These experimental results suggest that these oxidizing agents may inhibit the transfer of stimulation signals from growth factors by acting on cell membrane sites and suppress subsequent DNA replication and mitotic division. 相似文献
