The number of described pathogenic and non-pathogenic Erwinia species associated with pome fruit trees, especially pear trees, has increased in recent years, but updated comparative information about their similarities and differences is scarce. The causal agent of the fire blight disease of rosaceous plants, Erwinia amylovora, is the most studied species of this genus. Recently described species that are pathogenic to pear trees include Erwinia pyrifoliae in Korea and Japan, Erwinia spp. in Japan, and Erwinia piriflorinigrans in Spain. E. pyrifoliae causes symptoms that are indistinguishable from those of fire blight in Asian pear trees, Erwinia spp. from Japan cause black lesions on several cultivars of pear trees, and E. piriflorinigrans causes necrosis of only pear blossoms. All these novel species share some phenotypic and genetic characteristics with E. amylovora. Non-pathogenic Erwinia species are Erwinia billingiae and Erwinia tasmaniensis that have also been described on pome fruits; however, less information is available on these species. We present an updated review on the phenotypic and molecular characteristics, habitat, pathogenicity, and epidemiology of E. amylovora, E. pyrifoliae, Erwinia spp. from Japan, E. piriflorinigrans, E. billingiae, and E. tasmaniensis. In addition, the interaction of these species with pome fruit trees is discussed.  相似文献

Japan is one of leading countries in the utilization of and research on microalgae, and various findings have been obtained. Many papers, however, have been published in Japanese, which prevents the information spreading far and wide. The purpose of this review is to introduce recent advances in the utilization of microalgae as well as their basic research in Japan. The discussion covers practical applications ofChlorella andSpirulina biomass to health foods, food additives and feed supplements. The current use of microalgae as live feeds for larvae in aquaculture is also summarized. With respect to microalgal metabolites the present status of research is described with a greater emphasis on bioactive compounds, pigments and oils as potential drugs, coloring matters and biofuels, respectively.  相似文献

We extensively identified phytoseiid mites co‐occurring with spider mites on crops throughout the islands of Okinawa, southwestern Japan to obtain fundamental information for controlling spider mites in the area using natural enemies. Of the 19 species found, three were new to Japan and eight were new to Okinawa. Neoseiulus womersleyi was the most common species with respect to the distribution range. Following N. womersleyi, six species including Amblyseius eharai were common, whereas N. californicus was not, suggesting that the recent change in dominant species from N. womersleyi to N. californicus observed on the main islands of Japan had not happened in Okinawa. On one small island (Tarama Island) located in the southwestern part of Okinawa, N. womersleyi was not found, and instead N. longispinosus, which is morphologically similar to N. womersleyi and has not been found in Japan, occurred. This suggests interisland differences in the relative frequencies of N. womersleyi and N. longispinosus in Okinawa.  相似文献

Symphurus hondoensis Hubbs, 1915, originally described only from the holotype taken in 390–542 m in Suruga Bay Japan, has long been considered a junior synonym ofS. strictus Gilbert, 1905, known from waters off Hawaii, Japan, the Philippine Islands, and South Africa. Based on new information from the holotype and a specimen recently captured from deep waters (789–815 m) off Amami-Oshima Island, southern Japan,S. hondoensis is now established as a valid species.Symphurus hondoensis is unique among congeners in having the combination of a 1–2–3 pattern of interdigitation of proximal dorsal pterygiophores and neural spines, 10 abdominal vertebrae, 14 caudalfin rays, 111–113 dorsal-fin rays, 95 anal-fin rays, 59 total vertebrae, 105–106 scales in longitudinal series, blind side nearly as darkly pigmented as the ocular surface, and a black peritoneum. Recognition ofS. hondoensis increases the number of described species ofSymphurus in waters off Japan to three (S. orientalis Bleeker,S. strictus, andS. hondoensis), with at least one more underscribed species occurring in deepwater hydrothermal vent areas off southern Japan.  相似文献

This study obtained information on the biogeographical distribution of lignicolous myxomycetes in temperate regions in Japan. It examined how climatic variables are related to patterns of occurrence in myxomycete communities. Sixty-four taxa were recorded on coniferous wood in 15 forest sites in summer. Common species that were abundant and widely distributed in Japan included Stemonitis axifera, Lycogala epidendrum, and Cribraria cancellata. In addition, Lindbladia cribrarioides was characteristic on dead Pinus densiflora wood in southwestern Japan. The species diversity index (H′) of the myxomycete communities was positively correlated with the annual mean temperature. The distribution of myxomycete communities was analyzed using nonmultidimensional scaling (NMDS). The ecological nature of the gradients expressed by the first two NMDS axes was that the first axis was found to correspond strongly to changes in the average minimum temperature and the latitude, and the second axis was related to a complex of factors, including altitude. The relative abundance of certain species in a myxomycete community on Japanese red pine changed in relation to the annual mean temperature, e.g., Lycogala epidendrum correlated negatively while Stemonitopsis hyperopta did so positively. We conclude that air temperatures can be used to predict the geographical distribution of lignicolous myxomycetes in this temperate region of Japan.  相似文献

In eusocial Hymenoptera, information on the presence of a queen is considered to play an important role in regulating worker reproduction. We examined the mode of transmission of this putative queen information to workers. Previous studies have reported that, in Diacamma sp. from Japan, unmated helper workers perceive the presence of a gamergate (functional queen) only through direct physical contact with her. In contrary to this conclusion, we showed, by an experiment that exposed workers either to the gamergate or to the eggs laid by the gamergate, that the presence of eggs laid by the gamergate to some extent suppressed the workers’ dominance interaction, a behavior that is associated with self-reproduction by unmated workers. We discuss the relative importance of direct and indirect transmission of gamergate-presence information under natural conditions in this ant.  相似文献

In the past, Rhopalomyia longitubifex, Rhopalomyia shinjii, and Rhopalomyia sp. (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) have been regarded as independent species based on differences in the sizes and shapes of axillary bud galls induced on Artemisia montana (Asteraceae) in Japan and A. princeps in Japan and Korea. However, comparison of morphological features and molecular sequencing data indicate that these Rhopalomyia gall midges are identical and that the differences in gall shape are polymorphisms, although the measurements of gall height and diameter overlap slightly. This finding suggests that although galls have frequently been regarded as extensions of the phenotype of a species, differences in gall shape may not always be reliable for identifying gall‐inducing cecidomyiids. The older name, R. longitubifex, is applied to these gall midges, and the names that were applied to this species on later occasions are revised or synonymized. The mature and immature stages of R. longitubifex are redescribed and information on the distribution, host range, and gall size of this species is provided. We also discuss the role of gall polymorphism in the early stages of speciation.  相似文献

Three cases of Hebeloma radicosum growth on the wood-mouse latrine near a wood-mouse nest are here described from Switzerland. This study establishes that this fungus may associate with wood mice, besides associating with moles as has been previously known. The nest occupant and the latrine maker were independently identified to ensure that the two were not different. For this identification, the characteristics of fallen hairs found from the nest and of those found from the deserted latrines now colonized by the fungus were taken as the most important information. In addition to these case studies, information about the occurrence of H. radicosum in northern Europe and northern Japan (Hokkaido) where moles do not occur is presented, which explicitly indicates the possibility of customer animals other than moles.  相似文献

The red alga Gelidium madagascariense, endemic to SE Madagascar, has been exported on a small scale to Japan for over two decades. The lack of information on the chemical characteristics of the phycocolloid contained in this species is the main reason for limitation of its commercialization. FT IR and GLC analysis show that it is an agar polymer, in which the methylated fraction contains predominant 6-0-methyl galactose and traces of 4-0-methyl galactose.  相似文献

Drosophila suzukii is a pest of soft fruit such as cherry, strawberry or blueberry and recently colonized North America and Europe from Asia. In this study, we assessed the utility of Japanese Asobara species as agents for the biological control of this pest species by examining their host use in nature and their capacity to parasitize this pest species. From Japan, eight Asobara species including putative three undescribed species were found; Asobara japonica was recorded from all over Japan, Asobara tabida from high altitude areas in central and northern Japan, Asobara rossica and Asobara rufescens from central to northern Japan, three undescribed species from central to western or southern Japan and Asobara pleuralis from a subtropical island of Japan. Among them, an undescribed species Asobara sp. TK1 may be useful as an agent for the biological control because it was recorded only from D. suzukii. All of the remaining seven species were generalists mainly using drosophilid species associated with fermenting fruits, and four of them had no or very low abilities to parasitize D. suzukii, indicating that these seven species are not or less appropriate as agents for biological control.  相似文献

Phagocata vivida (Ijima et Kaburaki, 1916) is common in cold-water habitats in mountainous and hilly regions in Japan; in Northern Japan it occurs in lowland areas. Comparative studies of the material from South Korea and Primorskiy in Northeast Siberia, Russia, show that Ph. vivida is distributed widely in these geographic areas. Phagocata miyadii Okugawa, 1939, reported from North Korea and Northeastern China is a synonym of Ph vivida. Geographical distribution of this species in the Japanese Islands now becomes very clear. Judging by its geographical and vertical distributions, the species probably is a preglacial faunal element that entered Japan by the northern route to Old Honshû Island along the coast of the Old Sea of Japan.  相似文献

Pinewood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, is the causative agent of pine wilt disease (PWD) of pine trees and is transmitted by cerambycid beetles belonging to the genus Monochamus. PWN is believed to have been introduced into Japan from North America at the beginning of the 20th century. In this article, we first provide an outline of the PWD system and the range expansion of PWN in Japan and then review the literature, focusing on the virulence of PWN. Virulence is a heritable trait in PWN, with high virulence being closely related to a high rate of reproduction and within-tree dispersal. When two PWN isolates with different virulence levels are inoculated into pine seedlings, the more virulent nematodes always dominate in dead seedlings. In a laboratory setting, many more virulent nematodes board the insect vectors than avirulent ones. The age at which vectors transmit the most abundant PWNs to pine twigs changes during the course of a PWD epidemic. However, the relation between virulence and transmission of PWN remains as yet relatively unknown. Such information would enable ecologists to predict the evolution of the PWD system. In this review we also compare ecological traits between the PWN and the avirulent congener, B. mucronatus.  相似文献

One of the world’s best studied troops of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) was captured intact at Arashiyama, Japan and transplanted to a brushland savannah area near Laredo, Texas, in 1972. The transplantation provided a unique opportunity to study the biological responses of this troop to a drastically different environment than the one in which it evolved. We investigated one biological response, the metabolism of nutrient, and non-nutrient elements, by neutron activation analysis (NAA) of hair from 88 of the transplanted monkeys nine months after transplantation. Many of the elements mammals metabolize are deposited in hair. Hair analysis is therefore a measure of these elements the mammal encounters in its environment. Hair concentration of S and Cl were found to increase with animal age at the 95% confidence level, and hair concentrations of Hg, Se, and I were found to decrease with animal age at the 95% confidence level. Male hair had more Zn and less Se than female hair at the 95% confidence level. Comparison of this information with similar information on the sister troop in Japan and on other troops will provide some indication of the homeostatic ability of this primate species to cope with different exposure regimes of certain elements. Such information is of general interest where pollution and other cultural activities are changing environmental levels of many elements.  相似文献

The Drosophila parasitoid system is an excellent model for the study of biological and ecological interactions. In Japan, extensive studies have been carried out on Drosophila parasitoids since the early 2000s. Here we provide up-to-date information on their diversity, distributions, host use and reproductive mode. Until now, 45 wasp species have been recorded. In addition, four genetically distinct groups (tentatively assigned as “races”) have been found in Ganaspis brasiliensis (Figitidae). Most of them are larvo-pupal parasitoids belonging to the families Figitidae and Braconidae, and some are pupal parasitoids of the families Pteromalidae and Diapriidae. A species of Encyrtidae was also recorded. Their major hosts are indicated with information on the host's breeding sites. Except Ganaspis xanthopoda and two races of G. brasiliensis that are distributed both in tropical and temperate regions, they are divided into tropical and temperate species. The tropical species are mainly distributed in Southeast Asia, and their distributions in Japan are restricted to the Ryukyu islands, particularly Iriomote-jima. The temperate species have been recorded from the main islands of Japan and surrounding islands but not from the Ryukyu islands, except two braconid species, Asobara japonica and Phaenocarpa sp. TK1. Some of the temperate species have also been recorded from Korea, China, Europe and/or North America. Among the 45 Japanese parasitoid species, at least seven are assumed to be thelytokous.  相似文献

Polycelis (Seidlia) auriculata is endemic to mountain districts of Japan, from the central part of Honshû to the area of the Daisetsu Mts of Hokkaidô. In northern Japan, it sometimes occurs in cold-water biotopes of lowland areas. The progenitor of P. auriculata appears to have been the oldest immigrant into northern Japan among the Japanese Polycelis species, entering through a northern route as a preglacial faunal element. P. auriculata now shows a discontinious distribution in northern Japan. By virtue of its geographical and vertical distribution, ecological niche, variation in anatomy of the copulatory apparatus, and cytodemes, this species appears to be in the process of transformation.  相似文献

The freshwater amphipod Crangonyx floridanus (Amphipoda: Crangonyctidae) is considered to have been recently introduced from North America to Japan, and the recorded sites at which it has been collected now cover nearly all of Japan except for the northern part. In this study, we surveyed further areas outside of its known distribution range, and examined the population genetic structure and the phylogenetic relationships between Japanese and North American populations of this species based on nuclear (18S rRNA) and mitochondrial (COI) DNA sequences. We found that this amphipod has already reached Hokkaido, northernmost Japan, which suggests that it has undergone rapid expansion in a pattern of concentric circles from the central part of Japan. Genetic analysis showed that the Japanese population is genetically homogeneous, in contrast to the genetic diversification of this species seen in North American Crangonyx populations. The process of introducing, establishing, and expanding this amphipod in Japan may be explained as follows. A limited number of individuals from a North American native population were probably inadvertently introduced and established somewhere within the Kanto region. The local population size then increased and its distribution range expanded rapidly across Japan.  相似文献
