Captorhinids are a speciose clade of sauropsids that are crucial to understand several aspects of basal amniote general biology. Members of the Captorhinidae explored different diets and, amongst basal amniotes, were one of the first groups to demonstrate high‐fibre herbivory. Several papers have been published on the cranial anatomy of captorhinids, but there are relatively few studies which focus on the post‐cranium, especially on the appendicular skeleton and long bones. This contribution presents the first quantitative long bone scaling in Captorhinidae performed through morphometric analyses. From classical biomechanical research, it is well‐established that to accommodate an increase in size, gravity will result in elastic deformation of long bones. This outcome is especially significant in terrestrial tetrapods with a sprawling limb posture such as captorhinids, where great torsional stresses are applied to long bones, both during locomotion and in the resting phase. In this paper, we test whether the consistent evolutionary size increase in captorhinids led to major re‐patterning in long bone structure as theoretically expected, based on the theory of elastic similarity. Morphometric analysis shows that, apart from a small positive allometry in the humerus, captorhinid long bones scale geometrically as body size increases. Thus, the predicted elastic similarity to maintain similar levels in peak stress with an increase in dimensions does not seem not to apply to long bone evolution in captorhinids. We propose that, as already observed experimentally in larger‐bodied varanid lizards, large captorhinids could also mitigate size‐related increases in stress by reducing femur rotation and increasing the percentage of the stride cycle during which the right hindfoot was on the ground (i.e. the duty factor). In this way, large captorhinids could avoid reaching peak stress thresholds by sacrificing speed during locomotion and without a substantial long bone re‐patterning or postural change.  相似文献

Adaptive changes in bacteria are generally considered to result from random mutations selected by the environment. This interpretation is challenged by the non-randomness of genomic changes observed following ageing or starvation in bacterial colonies. A theory of adaptive targeting of sequences for enzymes involved in DNA transactions is proposed here. It is assumed that the sudden leakage of cAMP consecutive to starvation induces a rapid drop in the ATP/ADP ratio that inactivates the homeostasis in control of the level of DNA supercoiling. This phase change enables the emergence of local modifications in chromosome topology in relation to the missing metabolites, a first stage in expression of an adaptive status in which DNA transactions are induced. The nonlinear perspective proposed here is homologous to that already suggested for adaptation of pluricellular organisms during their development. In both cases, phases of robustness in regulation networks for genetic expression are interspaced by critical periods of breakdown of the homeostatic regulations during which, through isolation of nodes from a whole network, specific changes with adaptive value may locally occur.  相似文献

Following the demonstration that the rate of evolutionary change in the amino acid sequences of cytochromes c of eukaryotic species was not constant either for a single line of phylogenetic descent during different evolutionary intervals or for separate lines of descent, the concept that neutral mutations account for the vast majority of the evolutionary variations could no longer be accepted. Previous studies had shown that all eukaryotic cytochromes c tested appeared to be functionally indistinguishable in their reaction with mitochondrial respiratory chain components. However, an examination of the kinetics at low ionic strength led to the discovery of a high affinity reaction of cytochrome c with cytochrome c oxidase that revealed large differences in activity between the cytochromes of the horse, baker's yeast and the protist Euglena. Observed Km values for this reaction of 10(-7) to 10(-8) M appear to represent actual dissociation constants, as demonstrated by direct binding studies of cytochrome c with purified cytochrome c oxidase. The high affinity reaction is sensitive to ionic strength and inhibited by ADP and ATP in the range of physiological concentrations, ATP being three times as effective as ADP. The possibility is discussed that this effect of ATP on cytochrome c binding to its oxidase could provide the basis of a mechanism for mitochondrial respiratory control. The demonstration of differences between cytochrome c of various species in this kinetic system opens the way to a systematic study of the possible evolutionary adaptations of cytochromes c to their oxidases.  相似文献

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is a common chronic disease leading to increased morbidity and reduced quality of life. Although exercise therapy has been shown to be beneficial for both pain and physical functioning, its underlying mechanism is not fully understood. However, a recent study found an exercise-induced increase in interleukin-10 levels, to which anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective properties are ascribed, in the (peri-)synovial fluid of patients with knee OA. These interesting results provide more insight into the effects of exercise in OA and need to be validated and confirmed. Hopefully, the study offers a promising basis for further research  相似文献

The micturition profile in conscious animals and the urethrovesical coordination in anesthetized conditions were investigated in 6- and 24-mo-old male Sprague-Dawley rats. The in vitro pharmacological responses to KCl, electrical field stimulation (EFS), carbachol, phenylephrine, and isoprenaline were determined in the isolated bladder body, the bladder neck, and urethra. A morphometric and immunohistological study has been included. During conscious cystomanometry, 63% of the aging rats but only 25% of the adult rats showed spontaneous contractions during the bladder-filling phase. In conscious aging rats, basal pressure, threshold pressure, and micturition pressure were also significantly increased. In anesthetized aging rats, a decrease in resting urethral pressure at micturition threshold and the occurrence of a significant delay in urethral relaxation during micturition were associated with an increased residual volume. In all isolated tissues, contractile response to KCl was not modified with aging, whereas age-related decreases in maximal responses to carbachol in the bladder body and to phenylephrine and carbachol in the urethra were observed. In the bladder neck only, we found a significant decrease in the amplitude of neurogenic contractions associated with fibrosis but without decrease in nerve density. These experiments show significant modifications in the voiding pattern of aging rats associated with urethral dysfunction and with regionally specific pharmacological and structural changes of the urinary tract. We propose that aging in rats is characterized by an impairment of the urethrovesical coordination, leading to bladder dysfunctions similar to those induced by bladder outlet obstruction.  相似文献

A major goal of evolutionary studies is to better understand how complex morphologies are related to the different functions and behaviours in which they are involved. For example, during locomotion and hunting behaviour, the head and the eyes have to stay at an appropriate level in order to reliably judge distance as well as to provide postural information. The morphology and orientation of the orbits and cranial base will have an impact on eye orientation. Consequently, variation in orbital and cranial base morphology is expected to be correlated with aspects of an animal's lifestyle. In this study, we investigate whether the shape of the skull evolves in response to the functional demands imposed by ecology and behaviour using geometric morphometric methods. We test if locomotor habitats, diet, and activity pattern influence the shape of the skull in musteloid carnivorans using (M)ANOVAs and phylogenetic (M)ANOVAs, and explore the functional correlates of morphological features in relation to locomotor habitats, diet, and activity pattern. Our results show that phylogeny, locomotion and, diet strongly influence the shape of the skull, whereas the activity pattern seems to have a weakest influence. We also show that the locomotor environment is highly integrated with foraging and feeding, which can lead to similar selective pressures and drive the evolution of skull shape in the same direction. Finally, we show similar responses to functional demands in musteloids, a super family of close related species, as are typically observed across all mammals suggesting the pervasiveness of these functional demands.  相似文献

To survive winters, woody perennials of temperate zones must enter into endodormancy. Resumption of spring growth requires sufficient exposure to low temperature (chill units, CUs) in winter (chilling requirement), which also plays a role in the development of cold hardiness (cold acclimation). Physiological studies on dormancy breaking have focused on identifying markers, such as appearance or disappearance of proteins in response to varying degrees of chill unit accumulation. However, whether these changes are associated with dormancy transitions or cold acclimation is not clear. In the present study, greenhouse-grown blueberry (Vaccinium section Cyanococcus) plants were used to address this question. Three blueberry cultivars, Bluecrop, Tifblue, and Gulfcoast having chilling requirement of approximately 1 200, 900 and 600 CUs, respectively, were first exposed to 4°C for long enough to provide chill units equivalent to one-half of their respective chilling requirement. This treatment was expected to result in cold acclimation. A fraction of plants was then subjected to a 15/12°C (light/dark) regime for 2 weeks, a treatment expected to be “dormancy-neutral” but cause deacclimation. Before and after each treatment, cold hardiness and dormancy status of floral buds were determined; proteins were extracted from the buds collected on the same sampling date, and separated by one-dimensional SDS-PAGE. Dehydrin-like proteins were identified by immunoblotting, using anti-dehydrin antiserum. Results indicate that the chilling treatment resulted in cold acclimation as indicated by increased bud hardiness in all three cultivars. Data also indicate a distinct accumulation of three dehydrin-like proteins of 65, 60, and 14 kDa during cold acclimation. The cold hardiness and levels of dehydrin proteins decreased during the exposure to 15/12°C for 2 weeks. Results also confirmed that this treatment had no negative effect on chill unit accumulation. Densitometric scans of protein gels indicated a close association between the abundance of dehydrins and degree of cold hardiness in these cultivars. In addition, levels of the dehydrin proteins and cold hardiness remained about the same between 100% and >100% satisfaction of chilling requirement. These results suggest that changes in dehydrin expression are more closely associated with cold hardiness than with dormancy transitions.  相似文献

Shade-induced changes in the branching pattern of clonal plants can lead to conspicuous modifications of their growth form and architecture. It has been hypothesized that reduced branching in shade may be an adaptive trait, enabling clonal plants to escape from unfavourable patches in a heterogeneous environment by allocating resources preferentially to the growth of the main axis (i.e. linear expansion), rather than to local proliferation by branching. However, such an adaptionist interpretation may be unjustified if (1) branching frequency is a function of the ontogenetic stage of plants, and if (2) shading slows down the ontogenetic development of plants, thereby delaying branch formation. In this case, architectural differences between sun- and shade-grown individuals, harvested at the same chronological age, may not represent a functional response to changes in light conditions, but may be a by-product of effects of shade on the rate of plant development. To distinguish between these two alternatives, individuals of the stoloniferous herb Potentilla reptans were subjected to three experimental light conditions: a control treatment providing full daylight, and two shade treatments: neutral shade (13% of ambient PPFD; no changes in light spectral composition) and simulated canopy shade (13% PPFD and a reduced red:far-red ratio). Plant development was followed throughout the experiment by daily monitoring primary stolon growth as well as branch and leaf initiation. Biomass and clonal offspring production were measured when plants were harvested. At the end of the experiment shaded plants had produced significantly fewer branches than clones grown in full daylight. In all three treatments, however, initiation of secondary stolons occurred at the same developmental stage of individual ramets. Shading significantly slowed down the ontogenetic development of plants and this resulted in the observed differences in branching patterns between sun- and shade-grown individuals, when compared at the same chronological age. These results hence provide evidence that shade-induced changes in the branching pattern of clonal plants can be due to purely allometric effects. Implications for interpreting architectural changes in terms of functional shade-avoidance responses are discussed. Received: 16 August 1996 / Accepted: December 1996  相似文献

Predicting the outcomes of any mutualistic interaction between ants and plants can be a very difficult task, since these outcomes are often determined by the ecological context in which the interacting species are embedded. Network theory has been an important tool to improve our understanding about the organizational patterns of animal–plant interactions. Nevertheless, traditionally, network studies have focused mainly on species-based differences and ignoring the importance of individual differences within populations. In this study, we evaluated if downscaling an ant–plant network from species to the individual level results in structural and functional changes in a network involving different-sized plant individuals. For this, we studied the extrafloral-nectar producing-tree Caryocar brasiliense (Caryocaraceae) and their associated ants in a Neotropical savanna. We observed 254 interactions involving 43 individuals of C. brasiliense and 47 ant species. The individual-based ant–plant network exhibited a nested pattern of interactions, with all developmental stages contributing equally to structuring this non-random pattern. We also found that plants with greater centrality within the network were better protected by their ant partners. However, plants with higher levels of individual specialization were not necessarily better protected by ants. Overall, we presented empirical evidence that intra-population variations are important for shaping ant–plant networks, since they can change the level of protection against herbivores conferred by the ants. These results highlight the importance of individual-based analyses of ecological networks, opening new research venues in the eco-evolutionary dynamics of ant–plant interactions.  相似文献

Understanding mechanisms to predict changes in plant and animal communities is a key challenge in ecology. The need to transfer knowledge gained from single species to a more generalized approach has led to the development of categorization systems where species’ similarities in life strategies and traits are classified into ecological groups (EGs) like functional groups/types or guilds. While approaches in plant ecology undergo a steady improvement and refinement of methodologies, progression in animal ecology is lagging behind. With this review, we aim to initiate a further development of functional classification systems in animal ecology, comparable to recent developments in plant ecology. We here (i) give an overview of terms and definitions of EGs in animal ecology, (ii) discuss existing classification systems, methods and application areas of EGs (focusing on terrestrial vertebrates), and (iii) provide a “roadmap towards an animal functional type approach” for improving the application of EGs and classifications in animal ecology. We found that an animal functional type approach requires: (i) the identification of core traits describing species’ dependency on their habitat and life history traits, (ii) an optimization of trait selection by clustering traits into hierarchies, (iii) the assessment ofsoft traits” as substitute for hardly measurable traits, e.g. body size for dispersal ability, and (iv) testing of delineated groups for validation including experiments.  相似文献

The standing crop biomass of different populations or trophic levels reflects patterns of energy flow through an ecosystem. The contribution of parasites to total biomass is often considered negligible; recent evidence suggests otherwise, although it comes from a narrow range of natural systems. Quantifying how local parasite biomass, whether that of a single species or an assemblage of species sharing the same host, varies across localities with host population biomass, is critical to determine what constrains parasite populations. We use an extensive dataset on all free‐living and parasitic metazoan species from multiple sites in New Zealand lakes to measure parasite biomass and test how it covaries with host biomass. In all lakes, trematodes had the highest combined biomass among parasite taxa, ranging from about 0.01 to 0.25 g m?2, surpassing the biomass of minor free‐living taxa. Unlike findings from other studies, the life stage contributing the most to total trematode biomass was the metacercarial stage in the second intermediate host, and not sporocysts or rediae within snail first intermediate hosts, possibly due to low prevalence and small snail sizes. For populations of single parasite species, we found no relationship between host and parasite biomass for either juvenile or adult nematodes. In contrast, all life stages of trematodes had local biomasses that correlated positively with those of their hosts. For assemblages of parasite species sharing the same host, we found strong relationships between local host population biomass and the total biomass of parasites supported. In these host–parasite biomass relationships, the scaling factor (slope in log‐log space) suggests that parasites may not be making full use of available host resources. Host populations appear capable of supporting a little more parasite biomass, and may be open to expansion of existing parasites or invasion by new ones.  相似文献

Hydrogen peroxide features in many biological oxidative processes and must be continuously degraded enzymatically either via a catalatic or a peroxidatic mechanism. For this purpose ancestral bacteria evolved a battery of different heme and non-heme enzymes, among which heme-containing catalase-peroxidases (CP) are one of the most widespread representatives. They are unique since they can follow both H(2)O(2)-degrading mechanisms, the catalase activity being clearly dominant. With the fast increasing amount of genomic data available, we were able to perform an extensive search for CP and found almost 300 sequences covering a large range of microorganisms. Most of them were encoded by bacterial genomes, but we could also find some in eukaryotic organisms other than fungi, which has never been shown until now. Our screen also reveals that approximately 60% of the bacteria do not possess CP genes. Chaotic distribution among species and incongruous phylogenetic reconstruction indicated existence of numerous lateral gene transfers in addition to duplication events and regular speciation. The results obtained show an impressively complex gene transmission pattern, and give some new insights about the role of CP and the origin of life on earth. Finally, we propose for the first time bacterial candidates that may have participated in the transfer of CP from bacteria to eukaryotes.  相似文献

Summary. The cytology of leaf cells from five different high-alpine plants was studied and compared with structures in chloroplasts from the typical high-alpine plant Ranunculus glacialis previously described as having frequent envelope plus stroma protrusions. The plants under investigation ranged from subalpine/alpine Geum montanum through alpine Geum reptans, Poa alpina var. vivipara, and Oxyria digyna to nival Cerastium uniflorum and R. glacialis. The general leaf structure (by light microscopy) and leaf mesophyll cell ultrastructure (by transmission electron microscopy [TEM]) did not show any specialized structures unique to these mountain species. However, chloroplast protrusion formation could be found in G. reptans and, to a greater extent, in O. digyna. The other species exhibited only a low percentage of such chloroplast structural changes. Occurrence of protrusions in samples of G. montanum and O. digyna growing in a mild climate at about 50 m above sea level was drastically reduced. Serial TEM sections of O. digyna cells showed that the protrusions can appear as rather broad and long appendices of plastids, often forming pocketlike structures where mitochondria and microbodies are in close vicinity to the plastid and to each other. It is suggested that some high-alpine plants may form such protrusions to facilitate fast exchange of molecules between cytoplasm and plastid as an adaptation to the short, often unfavorable vegetation period in the Alps, while other species may have developed different types of adaptation that are not expressed in ultrastructural changes of the plastids. To better understand ecological traits of organisms, one can study them from two, not necessarily mutually exclusive perspectives: how the traits evolved, and their current adaptive utility. In birds, foraging behavior and associated morphological traits generally are explained by a combination of adaptive and phylogenetic predictors. The avian skeleton and more specifically, the skeletal flight apparatus is under well‐known functional and phylogenetic constraints. This is an interesting area to partition the relative contributions of adaptive correlated evolution and phylogenetic constraint to species clustering in morphological space. A prediction of convergent evolution is that nonphylogenetic morphological clustering is a characteristic of ecological similarity. We tested this using representatives of North American birds from two clades, one with a mixture of foraging modes (Turdid thrushes, solitaires, and bluebirds) and one with more canalized foraging behaviors (Tyrannid flycatchers). Nine characters on the skeletal flight apparatus from 19 species were used to characterize the morphological space and test for ecomorphological clustering. When body size and phylogeny are considered, the three bluebird species and Townsend's solitaire cluster with the ecologically similar flycatchers rather than with their phylogenetic close relatives. Furthermore, sit‐and‐wait foragers tend to exhibit relatively long distal elements and a long keel while active ground foragers have deeper keels and a longer humerus. Distal elements, expected to be relatively shorter and more bowed in the flycatchers and bluebirds, were actually longer and narrower. A reduction of distal element mass may be more important for facilitating maneuverability than surface area for insertion of wing‐rotational musculature. J.
