We describe the gonadal and abdominal fat storage cycles for a population of Caiman crocodilus fuscus kept in captivity at a breeding farm. The reproductive cycles of males and females are clearly seasonal. Vitellogenic follicles were observed in females year‐round; however, the follicular growth that produces the preovulatory follicles for the breeding season occurs in November–May (most of the dry season to the beginning of the rainy season). These months correspond with the presence of physiologically reproductive males. Oviposition takes place during the wet season (April–August) and the births occur at the end of this season (September–November). Fat storage was not related to reproductive activity, and did not vary by month or between sexes. Although environmental and hormonal conditions have been improved for these captive animals, they maintain a strongly seasonal reproductive cycle, historically fixed to oviposit in the most favorable period for nest construction and hatching during the rainy season. The Lower Anapu River, Eastern Amazon, has a discrete flood pulse with narrow flooded areas due to the reduced influence of tides. In this environment, local precipitation might act as an important factor in the input of detritus, which can serve as a trigger for fish reproductive period. Therefore, this paper aims to determine the effects of local precipitation on the reproductive ecology of an abundant detritivorous fish in flooded rivers. Between May 2012 and April 2013, 886 specimens (471 females and 415 males) were captured monthly using gill nets. Individuals were measured, weighted, sexed, and the gonadal development stage was defined macroscopically and confirmed histologically. Sex ratio, length-weight relationship (LWR), condition factor (k), Gonadosomatic Index (GSI), relative frequency of maturity stages, and size at first gonadal maturity (L50) were estimated and tested in relation to rainfall periods. There was no difference between the expected sex ratio (1:1), and both males and females showed polyphasic growth. The condition factor indicated higher values at the beginning of the rainy season and lower values during the dry season for both sexes. GSI and relative frequency of mature individuals indicated a long reproduction period with gonadal investment starting within the dry season until early in the rainy season for spawning within the rains. The L50 value showed that males reach sexual maturity before females. Results indicated a reproductive pattern strongly influenced by rainfall, corroborating the importance of local precipitation for lacustrine environments.  相似文献

Seasonal reproductive rhythmicity and concomitant thyroid fluctuations have been studied in the female Indian palm squirrel, Funambulus pennanti. The majority of the squirrels enter estrus during March and April when ovarian follicles attain maximum diameter. Ovulation starts in April and continues till June. A large number of degenerating follicles, indicating decline in ovarian functions, is a characteristic feature of the ovary in August. Minimum percent thyroid 131I uptake is recorded during May and June, i.e. at the onset of mating season. In July, which also marked the gestation period in the majority of the squirrels dissected, thyroid activity significantly increases. Gonadal regression begins in August and this is accompanied by corresponding fall in the thyroid 131I uptake. Alterations in thyroid cytoarchitecture during different months of the year are in accordance with the results obtained from radioiodine uptake studies. Fluctuations in thyroid functions during gonadal regression, recrudescence and peak gonadal activity are discussed in the present communication.  相似文献

1. Sternopygus macrurus were collected in Venezuela during the period of gonadal recrudescence in early or late dry season. Electric organ discharge (EOD) frequencies were recorded, blood samples were taken for analysis of steroid titers, and gonads were taken for determination of reproductive condition. 2. Mean EOD frequencies were significantly lower in males than in females in all samples. EOD frequency was inversely correlated with body length in males in late, but not early, dry season, and these parameters were never correlated in females. 3. Plasma levels of testosterone (T) and 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT), but not estradiol-17 beta (E2), were inversely correlated with EOD frequency in males. No 11-KT was observed in plasma of females, and plasma levels of T and E2 in females were comparable to those of males. Neither T nor E2 were correlated with EOD frequency in females. 4. Testes collected in late dry season were more mature than those from early dry season; androgen levels and EOD frequency were correlated with testicular maturity. Ovaries collected in early dry season were immature, while those from late dry season were more mature. There was no relationship between EOD frequency and stage of ovarian development. 5. These results suggest that plasma androgens modulate EOD frequency in males during the reproductive season and that plasma E2 has little relationship to EOD frequency in either sex.  相似文献

The reproductive activity of two species of wild rodents was studied in the Serra do Rola‐Moça State Park (PERM), in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. From October 1998 to October 1999 specimens of Akodon montensis (Thomas 1913) were captured in an area of seasonal semi‐deciduous forest, while specimens of Bolomys lasiurus (Lund 1840) were captured in a cerrado area (a savannah‐like grassland). The determination of the reproductive condition was based on histological and histometric analyses of testes and external characteristics of gonads. The volume of the testes, diameter of the seminiferous tubules and depth of the seminiferous epithelium were measured. Akodon montensis showed a seasonal annual reproductive cycle divided into four stages (recrudescence, activity or proliferation, regression and rest) with the reproductive activity mainly occurring during the rainy season. In contrast, B. lasiurus presented reproductive activity during almost the whole year. For both species the volume of the testes was an effective indicator of their reproductive condition. We suggest that the histological and histometric analysis of the gonads of males, together with the observations of external characteristics of gonads of males and females, may assist in identifying the reproductive condition of these animals.  相似文献

Long days stimulate and short days (SDs) inhibit the reproductive axis of photoperiodic rodents. In long-day Turkish hamsters, unlike most other rodents, elimination of pineal melatonin secretion by constant light or pinealectomy initiates a cycle of gonadal involution and recrudescence outwardly similar to that induced by short days. The present study assessed whether short days and constant light induce the seasonal reproductive cycle via common or different interval timing mechanisms. Male hamsters that had undergone gonadal involution in SDs for 8 or 14 weeks were treated with LL for 14 and 8 weeks, respectively. If SDs and LL act via independent mechanisms, then gonadal quiescence of SD-regressed males, which normally lasts 10 weeks, might be extended by LL treatment; alternatively, if SDs and LL act on the same timer, or the timer cannot be retriggered, then LL will not extend the duration of reproductive quiescence. Neither of these outcomes materialized. Instead, male hamsters exposed to LL while reproductively quiescent exhibited accelerated gonadal recrudescence. Extended LL treatment did not restore responsiveness to SDs in photorefractory hamsters. In Turkish hamsters, photoperiodic history determines whether constant light inhibits or stimulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis.  相似文献

An experiment quantified the effect of food ration and spawning number on the breeding season reproductive performance of batch-spawning, female three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus . Individually housed females were maintained on fixed rations of 2, 4, 8 or 16% of their initial postspawning mass of live enchytraeid worms from immediately after their first spawning until they ceased spawning. Number of spawnings correlated positively with ration. Total breeding season reproductive investment (total wet mass of eggs produced as a percentage of initial postspawning female mass) ranged from 38% at the 2% ration to 147% at the 16% ration. At the lower rations, postspawning mass, batch fecundity and wet and dry masses of the batch declined over successive spawnings, with the rate of decline inversely related to ration. At the highest ration, there was no decline in batch fecundity and postspawning mass increased over successive spawnings. Mean reproductive investment per inter-spawning interval was higher at the highest ration, but at all rations declined over successive spawnings. Mean reproductive effort per inter-spawning interval (wet mass of eggs spawned as a percentage of the wet mass of food consumed over the inter-spawning interval) was inversely related to ration. At the higher rations, reproductive effort showed no trend over successive spawnings. Neither spawning number nor ration had a systematic effect on egg diameter, wet mass per egg, dry mass per egg or total lipid content of the eggs. If the rate of food intake was insufficient, although batch fecundity declined, the main adjustment was a reduction in the number of spawnings in the breeding season.  相似文献

Adult males and females of the seasonally breeding lizardCalotes versicolor were subjected to various social situations under semi-natural conditions to explain the role of socio-sexual factors in gonadal recrudescence. They were grouped as: (i) males and females, (ii) males and females separated by a wire mesh, (iii) same sex groups of males or females, (iv) castrated males with intact females and (v) ovariectomized (OvX) females with intact males from postbreeding to breeding phase. Specimens collected from the wild during breeding season served as the control group. Plasma sex steroid levels (testosterone in male and 17β-estradiol in female), spermatogenetic activity and vitellogenesis were the criteria to judge gonadal recrudescence. In intact males and females that were kept together, gonadal recrudescence and plasma sex steroids levels were comparable to those in wild-caught individuals. Gonadal recrudescence was at its least in all male and all female groups, and plasma sex steroids were at basal levels. Association with OvX females initiated testicular recrudescence but spermatogenetic activity progressed only up to the spermatid stage while males separated from females by wire mesh showed spermatogenetic activity for a shorter period. Females grouped with castrated males and those separated from males by wire mesh produced vitellogenic follicles. However, the total number and diameter of vitellogenic follicles, and plasma estradiol levels were lower than in the females grouped with intact males. The findings indicate that association with members of the opposite sex with progressively rising titers of sex steroids is crucial in both initiating and sustaining gonadal recrudescence in the lizard. Thus, members of the opposite sex mutually regulate gonadal recrudescence in theC. versicolor.  相似文献

Captive male brown-headed cowbirds exposed to long days exhibit gonadal growth and have elevated plasma testosterone (T) levels. This photoperiodic response is enhanced if males are housed with female cowbirds: Photostimulated males with females increase plasma testosterone levels sooner than do individually housed photostimulated males. Peak plasma T levels are similar in both groups, although peak levels are maintained longer in males housed with females. The gonadal cycle is similarly affected; males in the presence of females have earlier gonadal recrudescence and maintain mature gonads longer than do photostimulated males without females. Plasma corticosterone levels increase in the unpaired males, suggesting that removal of social cues is stressful for these birds. Free-living paired males have significantly higher plasma testosterone levels than do unpaired/unknown males early in the season, when social relationships are being established; the levels are similar thereafter. There is no difference between the two groups in testicular maturation rates; nor do they differ in plasma corticosterone levels at any time of the season. These results suggest that social stimuli are important in modulating the secretion of testosterone in males early in the season when pairing occurs, and possibly late in the season as well, probably to prevent termination of breeding prior to that of females.  相似文献

The changes in inhibin immunostaining in the gonads during the annual reproductive cycle of both sexes of the prairie dog are described. No inhibin immunostaining was found in primary or secondary follicles of the ovary. Theca and granulosa cells of preovulatory Graafian follicles found in January and February stained for inhibin. Corpora lutea of both pregnant and non-pregnant females stain more densely for inhibin than follicles. Inhibin staining is present in luteal cells for at least 4 months during regression, longer than detectable progesterone is secreted. Sertoli cells in the testes do not have inhibin immunostaining during recrudescence. These cells show light immunostain for inhibin during peak spermatogenic activity in January and February but stain more deeply during early regression of the testis. Stain is gradually lost in the next 4-5 months as the tubules close. Leydig cells and germ cells do not stain for inhibin at any stage of the annual cycle but interstitial cells and tunic cells stain during the breeding phase. The presence of immunochemical staining for inhibin in prairie dog gonads during regression suggests that inhibin is part of a negative feedback complex that includes progesterone in the female and testosterone or another androgen in the male. Negative feedback during regression may also cause gonadal inactivity.  相似文献

This study investigated some aspects of the reproductive biology of male and female greater bandicoot rats,Bandicota indica,in southern Thailand from September 2004 to September 2006. In females, body, uterine and preputial gland weights, occurrences of pregnancies and placental scars, and in males, testicalar weights and histology, and sizes of accessory sex glands, were recorded. Pregnancies occurred predominantly, but not exclusively,in the wet season, with a higher incidence pregnancies in the second, than in the first, dry season. Uterine and preputial gland weights tended to be lower in the first, but not the second dry season, with placental scars occurring at all times of year. Males tended to have heavier testes in the wet season but some seminiferous tubules contained sperm even in the dry season. Seminal vesicles, but not prostates and preputial glands, tended to be heavier in animals in the wet season. We conclude that the greater bandieoot rat in southern Thailand shows maximal reproductive activity in the wet season with some reproductive activity, albeit variable from year to year, occurring in the dry season depending upon environmental conditions. This study has also shown that females,as well as males, have large preputial glands, and that males invariably have small testes regardless of the time of year. These observations suggest a similar timing of reproduction, but a different breeding biology and perhaps social organisation, from that of the sympatric ricefield rat,Rattus argentiventer.  相似文献

Seasonal reproduction is a common characteristic of many small mammals which inhabit seasonal environments in temperate regions, the sub-tropics as well as the tropics. It is important for an animal to reproduce during the most favourable time of the year to ensure the survival of the young and maximize reproductive success. In southern Africa, female spiny mice (Acomys spinosissimus) breed during the warm and wet spring and summer months, whereas the reproductive pattern of males is unknown although an opportunistic breeding pattern has been implicated. We investigated testes mass and volume, seminiferous tubule diameter, spermatogenesis and plasma testosterone concentrations in a South African population of male spiny mice on a 2-monthly basis over one year. Testes mass and volume started to increase in July/August and was high from September until December. Seminiferous tubule diameter and spermatogenesis increased during the same months. Plasma testosterone concentration was elevated from July/August to November/December. Development of the reproductive characteristics of male spiny mice was correlated with high rainfall and high ambient temperatures, but reproductive development had already started during the dry season and the coldest months. This shows that reproductive development in males may not be dependent on climatic conditions, and other factors, such as photoperiod, may trigger the onset of reproduction. The data, however, suggest that A. spinosissimus is a true seasonal breeder with reproduction confined to the spring and summer months in southern Africa.  相似文献

The cichlid fish T. leucosticta (Trewavas) was studied by fortnightly seining an area of an equatorial lake (Lake Naivasha) in Kenya to study their reproductive and gonadal patterns. The study lasted 16 months during which period temperature, rainfall and (for the last 11 months) sunlight patterns were obtained and analysed. Testicular and ovarian development was lowest in the months of July-August. No evidence of breeding was detected during this period. This period is also marked by the lowest rainfall, the lowest temperatures and least sunlight. Slight but fluctuating breeding activity and gonadal development is resumed in October following increased sunlight and temperatures from September. The period December to February is marked by sustained high temperatures, high sustained maximal sunlight and low rainfall. It is also the period of rising gonadal development in most mature males and females reaching a peak in both sexes in February. This is followed shortly after by a sharp peak in reproductive activity. It is concluded that sunlight and temperature are the most important factors influencing gonadal development and subsequent breeding in Tilapia even under equatorial conditions. When preceded by conditions of sustained high temperatures and good sunlight which are conducive to the maximal development of the gonads of both sexes, the onset of rainfall seems to stimulate the initiation of the peak breeding activity. Sustained heavy rainfall on the other hand seems to check breeding.  相似文献

From 1997 to 1999, we monitored the reproductive success of individual rufous-crowned sparrows (Aimophila ruficeps) in coastal sage scrub habitat of southern California, USA. Annual reproductive output of this ground-nesting species varied strongly with annual variation in rainfall, attributed to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation. Birds fledged 3.0 young per breeding pair in 1997, when rainfall was near the long-term mean, 5.1 offspring per pair in 1998, a wet El Niño year, and 0.8 fledglings per pair in 1999, a dry La Niña year. Variation in many components of reproductive output was consistent with the hypothesis that food availability was positively correlated with rainfall. However, the factor most responsible for the high reproductive output in 1998 was low early season nest predation which, combined with favorable nesting conditions, enabled more pairs to multiple-brood. Cool, rainy El Niño conditions may have altered the activity of snakes, the main predator of these nests, in the early season of 1998. Overall, more of the annual variation in fecundity was attributable to variation in within-season components of reproductive output (mean number of nests fledged per pair) than to within-nest components (mean brood size). Annual variation in rufous-crowned sparrow fecundity appears to be driven primarily by food resource-mediated processes in La Niña years and by predator-mediated processes in El Niño years.  相似文献

The winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus (Walbaum), population off Newfoundland can include a 'non-reproductive post-mature' subset at any time together with 'reproductive' and 'immature' subsets. Skin samples were taken from male and female specimens from each subset in the winter, after reproductive flounder have normally undergone a pre-winter phase of gonadal recrudescence, and also during the spring prespawning period and in the summer following spawning. Results for immature flounder demonstrate that fish size influences epidermal thickness in this species. The epidermis of reproductive flounders is thick, representing a secondary sexual characteristic, during gonadal recrudescence. A thick epidermis is most pronounced on the blind-side, particularly in prespawning males. Although the epidermis of non-reproductive post-mature fish was thinner than in prespawning males and females, it was thicker than in immature flounders. Also, the epidermal thickness of non-reproductive post-mature individuals can still display some seasonal change although gonadal recrudescence has not been sustained. There is also a relationship between condition factor and epidermal thickness which is manifested particularly clearly in immature and non-reproductive post-mature flounder.  相似文献

The present study investigated the effects of triiodothyronine (T3) on pituitary gonadotropin (GTH) subunits, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) β subunit, and growth hormone (GH) mRNA levels, as well as gonadal steroid secretion during different stages of reproduction in goldfish. Goldfish pituitary cells cultured with T3 exhibited lower tshβ mRNA levels in all reproductive stages and lower luteinising hormone β (lhβ) mRNA levels in early recrudescence, whereas gh and fshβ mRNA levels were not altered. T3 injections significantly reduced circulating oestrogen (OE2) concentrations in early and mid recrudescent male goldfish, but were without effect on the circulating level of OE2 in female fish. T3 injections also reduced circulating levels of testosterone in both male and female goldfish during the mid stage of gonadal recrudescence. In vitro culture of goldfish ovarian follicles at the late stage of gonadal recrudescence, in the presence of T3, resulted in reduced OE2 secretion; no consistent effect of T3 on testosterone secretion was observed in cultured goldfish ovarian follicles and testis. These findings support the hypothesis that T3 impairs reproduction by inhibiting production of gonadal steroids and pituitary luteinising hormone production in goldfish. Mol. Reprod. Blood sampling is often critical for answering a variety of questions about wild birds. However, it is important to assess the impacts, if any, of blood collection on wild birds. Here, we examined the effects of blood sampling on adults or nestlings in three species of free-living birds. First, we examined the effects of blood collection on annual survival and reproductive success in adult buff-breasted wrens Thryothorus leucotis in Panama. In adult wrens, blood collection from the brachial vein during the breeding season had no effect on annual survival or reproductive success. Second, we examined whether blood collection influenced mass gain in developing smooth-billed anis Crotophaga ani in Puerto Rico. In developing anis, blood collection from the femoral or jugular veins had no effect on mass gain of nestlings. Third, in developing European starlings Sturnus vulgaris in British Columbia, Canada, blood collection from the brachial vein had no effect of body condition. Blood collection from the jugular vein had a transient effect on body condition during the first week post-hatch, but this effect disappeared by the second week of age. Lastly, we present an extensive up-to-date review of the literature on the effects of blood collection on free-living avian species. Taken together, these data show that blood collection has no major negative effects on developing or adult birds in the wild.  相似文献

A population of cloud forest mice (Peromyscus nudipes) at latitude 10 degrees N near Monteverde, Costa Rica, was sampled four times by live-trapping twice during the 7-8 month wet season and twice during the 4-5 month dry season in 1989 and 1990. Body weights were lower during the early part of the dry season in males and throughout the dry season in females than at other times. Testes and seminal vesicles were somewhat lighter early in the dry season, but epididymal spermatozoa were abundant in most males throughout the year. Adult females ovulated, mated and became pregnant in the wet and dry seasons, but young were produced only during the wet season. Most embryos failed to implant during the dry season, and the few that did complete implantation were reabsorbed before midpregnancy. Apparently, every year, the females in this population spend several months actively engaged in a behavioural and metabolically costly process that is doomed to be unsuccessful. This reproductive strategy is termed pseudoseasonal, because reproductive success is highly seasonal, but attempts to reproduce are nonseasonal. Implantation failures similar to those seen in the wild were induced in the laboratory using mild restriction of food or water. Field evidence points to food restriction as the more important cause of pregnancy losses in the wild. Exposure to the gradually changing daylengths typical of Costa Rica had no effect on the production of young by adults, and maintenance on light cycles of 8 h light: 16 h dark, 11 h light: 13 h dark, 13 h light: 11 h dark and 16 h light: 8 h dark had no effect on the reproductive development of young animals of either sex.  相似文献

The developmental stages of the gonads and the spawning season of the ocean whitefish, Caulolatilus princeps , were determined. Gonad maturation is annual, and the spawning season is prolonged, from late autumn to early spring. From November to March, around 80% of the females were in an advanced mode of gonadal development, and in April most gonads were spent. From May to October the gonads were at rest and preparing for the next spawning season.
The gonadosomatic index describes the reproductive activity of the species adequately.  相似文献
