Spicule dimensions as taxonomic criteria in the identification of haplosclerid sponges from the shores of Anglesey 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
W. CLIFFORD JONES 《Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society》1984,80(1):239-259
The lengths and widths of at least 100 spicules from each of 126 specimens, comprising at least 12 species of haplosclerid sponges, mainly from Church Island and Rhosneigr, Anglesey, North Wales have been measured. It was found that spicule dimensions by themselves would be unreliable in the identification of species. The sample means, medians and maxima, when plotted using width and length axes, form specific clusters that overlap, sometimes to a considerable extent. The correlation coefficients for width against length varied widely, even when single species were considered. The variation arises from differences in the numbers of juvenile spicules in various samples. The best correlation coefficients exceeded 0.8 and the regression constants for linear correlation in such samples could be useful in the diagnosis and taxonomy of the species. The coefficients of variation for length and width also yielded parameters for species characterization. In general the coefficient for length tended to increase as the mean length increased, whereas that for width tended to decrease with increasing mean width. Some species stood apart from the general trends, however. The coefficients varied widely from one sample to another of the same species, identified using a variety of diagnostic features. To some extent the variation was linked with the date of collection. When all the data were combined, the average coefficient for width decreased markedly in May. The same was true for two species that were separately considered. The decrease was not simply caused by a change in mean width, changes in standard deviation also being involved. There was a tendency for certain species, in particular Reniera rosea and Gellius angulatus , to produce thin spicules in the spring, which became incorporated distally in the primary spicule bundles in July-August. 相似文献

Three species of glass sponges (Class Hexactinellida) form massive deep‐water reefs by growing on the skeletons of past generations, with new growth largely vertical and away from sediment that buries the lower portions. Growth is therefore essential for reef health, but how glass sponges produce new skeleton or tissue is not known. We used fluorescence, light, and electron microscopy to study skeletal and tissue growth in the reef‐forming glass sponge Aphrocallistes vastus. The sponge consists of a single large tube (the osculum), usually with several side branches, each of which can function as an effective excurrent vent. New tissue forms at the tips of each of these extensions, but how this occurs in a syncytial animal, and how the tubes expand laterally as the sponge gets larger, are both unknown. The fluorescent dye PDMPO labeled more spicule types in the tips of the sponge than elsewhere, indicating growth that was concentrated at the edge of the osculum. New tissue production was tracked using the thymidine analog EdU. EdU‐labeled nuclei were found predominantly at the edge or lip of the osculum. In that region new flagellated chambers were formed from clusters of choanoblasts that spread out around the enlarging chamber. In cellular sponges clusters of choanocytes form flagellated chambers through several rounds of mitotic divisions, and also by immigration of mesohyl cells, to expand the chamber to full size. By contrast, chambers in glass sponges expand as choanoblasts produce enucleate collar bodies to fill them out. Growing chambers with enucleate structures may be an adaptation to life in the deep sea if chambers with cells, and therefore more nuclei, are costly to build. 相似文献

This paper records the first example of a demosponge spicule framework in a single specimen of a Devonian stromatoporoid from the Frasnian of southern Belgium. The small sample (2.5 × 2 cm) is a component in a brecciated carbonate from a carbonate mound in La Boverie Quarry 30 km east of Dinant. Because of the small size of the sample, generic identification is not confirmed, but the stromatoporoid basal skeleton is similar to the genus Stromatopora. The spicules are arranged in the calcified skeleton, but not in the gallery space, and are recrystallized as multi‐crystalline calcite. The spicules fall into two size ranges: 10–20 μm diameter and 500–2000 μm long for the large ones and between 5–15 μm diameter and 50–100 μm length for the small ones. In tangential section, the spicules are circular, they have a simple structure, and no axial canal has been preserved. The large spicules are always monaxons, straight or slightly curved styles or strongyles. The spicules most closely resemble halichondrid/axinellid demosponge spicules and are important rare evidence of the existence of spicules in Palaeozoic stromatoporoids, reinforcing the interpretation that stromatoporoids were sponges. The basal skeleton may have had an aragonitic spherulitic mineralogy. Furthermore, the spicules indicate that this stromatoporoid sample is a demosponge. 相似文献

Exceptionally well‐preserved specimens of the reticulosan sponge Cyathophycus loydelli from the Sandbian (Late Ordovician) Llanfawr Mudstones Formation of Llandrindod, Waes, UK, have been examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The specimens include exquisitely detailed pyritized spicules, and granular pyritization of surrounding soft tissues. Spicules frequently show axial canals of diameter similar to those of modern siliceous sponges, with hexagonal symmetry typical of modern demosponges rather than hexactinellids. In one case, the axial filament is also preserved. The largest spicules (ray diameter >20 μm) show a complex structure, with a laminar external region similar to that of the extant hexactinellid Monorhaphis. Some spicules preserve sub‐micron detail of the spicule surface, resembling the reticulate collagenous sheath of Monorhaphis. The hexagonal symmetry of the canal confirms that at least some Reticulosa are not crown‐group hexactinellids, but stem‐group Hexactinellida or Demospongea, or stem‐group Silicea. This suggests that a square canal is a sufficient diagnostic feature of total‐group Hexactinellida, but that hexagonal canals were more widely distributed among Early Silicea and were probably not restricted to demosponges. Alternatively, comparison with the structure of modern verongiid fibres suggests that these may be homologous with the outer layers of Cyathophycus spicules, and Cyathophycus may instead be a stem‐group demosponge. The preserved detail of the surface layer shows that pyritization can preserve certain material with extraordinarily fine resolution. 相似文献

Glass sponges of the class Hexactinellida are a group of the most ancient multicellular animals, whose fossil remnants from the early Proterozoic have been registered. In order to demineralize the skeletal structures of the glass sponge Hyalonema sieboldi, we have used for the first time a strategy of slow leaching of the silicon-bearing component, based on the usage of alkaline solutions of sodium hydroxide, sodium dodecyl sulfate, and an anionic biosurfactant of a rhamnolipid nature. The obtained data unequivocally corroborate the presence of a fibrillar protein matrix functioning as a basis for silicon biomineralization in the basal spicules of H. sieboldi. Also, it has been found for the first time that the protein matrix is constructed of a collagenous protein. The technical approach proposed here might appear important for the study of the structural organization of skeletons in other silicon-bearing animals and, in an applied aspect, to work out new biomaterials for implantology and biocomposites, in order to use the latter as bioactive additives. 相似文献

Siliceous and calcareous sponges commonly are treated with acid to remove the spicules prior to embedding and cutting for histological investigations. Histology of spiculated sponge tissue represents a challenging problem in sponge histotechnology. Furthermore, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), a key method for studying sponge-associated microbes, is not possible after acid treatment. For a broad range of siliceous sponge species, we developed and evaluated methods for embedding in paraffin, methylmethacrylate resins, LR White resin and cryomatrix. Different methods for cutting tissue blocks as well as mounting and staining sections also were tested. Our aim was to enable histological investigations and FISH without prior removal of the spicules. To obtain an overview of tissue and skeleton arrangement, we recommend embedding tissue blocks with LR White resin combined with en bloc staining techniques for large specimens with thick and numerous spicules, but paraffin embedding and subsequent staining for whole small specimens. For FISH on siliceous sponges, we recommend Histocryl embedding if the spicule content is high, but paraffin embedding if it is low. Classical histological techniques are used for detailed tissue examinations.

Two new species of Demospongiae are described for British Columbia and adjacent waters in the family Axinellidae, Auletta krautteri
sp. n. and Dragmacidon kishinensis
sp. n. They represent range extensions for both of these genera. Both are fairly commonly encountered, Auletta krautteri below diving depths (87 to at least 300 m) and Dragmacidon kishinensis in shallow water (intertidal to 30 m). We propose an amended genus diagnosis for Auletta to account for the variability among species in principal spicules that form the ascending tracts to be either oxeas, styles or strongyles rather than just oxeas. 相似文献

Courtship, mating and spermatophores of Phrynichus exophthalmus and P. deflersi arabicus nov. ssp. are described. Courtship of P. exophthalmus is more complex than in other amblypygids, with close contact between mates nearly throughout the mating dance. After spermatophore formation, the female is lured to the spermatophore and then firmly pressed onto it. Mating behaviour and spermatophore confirm the placement of this species in the Phrynichus ceylonicus group and show that the similarities with Euphrynichus, like long and thin pedipalps with bacilliform apophyses instead of spines, are the result of convergent evolution. Courtship of P. d. arabicus is conservative, similar to that of P. dhofarensis and many other amblypygids. After spermatophore formation, the female is lured to the spermatophore, then pulled over and pressed onto it. The results suggest that the P. ceylonicus group and the P. deflersi group and sister groups, but the low number of investigated species precludes a definite conclusion. 相似文献

The relationships between different spicule lineages of Demospongiae are revised through the ontogenetic study of the main spicules of the genera Crambe and Discorhabdella. The presence of terminal orifices in the basal spines of the asterose acanthostyles of Discorhabdella, and the actines of the desmas of Crambe have been shown by examining young spicules under high magnification. Thus, the polyaxonid origin of both spicule types is hereby supported by the ontogenetic information, and their homology is also supported by their equivalent arrangement in the skeleton. The current differences in shape between both spicule types are considered the result of a divergent morphological evolution from an ancestral polyactinal corpuscle, by the atrophy/hypertrophy of a different number of actines. Arguments are also presented to support the homology of these two spicule types with the sphaeroclons of Vetulina, and other fossil genera. Moreover, the presence of axial canals inside the tubercles of the tuberose tylostyles of Discorhabdella and Crambe tuberosa indicates that the tubercles are actually atrophied actines as in the case of the hadromerid genus Terpios. According to the ontogeny, the tuberose morphology of these spicules may correspond to the retention of an ancestral characteristic in the Poecilosclerida and Hadromerida; in this case, a monophyletic origin, is suggested between both taxa. From the overall results here presented, the tetraxonid spicule, presently considered by most authors as the primitive morphotype, as well as some monaxons, could be considered as evolving from a polyaxial form. 相似文献

Recently Shen et al. have argued that the Ediacaran faunas from Avalon-Charnwood [580–560 million years ago (MA)], the White Sea-Flinders Range (560–550 MA) and Namibia (550–543 MA) occupied the same morphospace even though these faunas differed in species composition, ecology, biogeography and age. The traits they used to characterise these faunas could not distinguish between important promorphological features such as radial vs. bilaterian and unitary vs. colonial animals. Their inappropriate assignment of symmetry properties led to the homogenisation of morphospace in these different faunas. Another way to examine shifts in morphospace involves sorting out radial vs. bilaterian and unitary vs. colonial genera in terms of their time of first appearance in the fossil record. While genera with both kinds of symmetry properties and unitary and colonial animals were present during the early Ediacaran, there was a large proportional increase in new bilaterian genera and a decrease in colonial genera beginning between 560–550 MA. The increase in bilaterians may have been associated with the ability to exploit food sources in and on the substrate of shallow water environments. 相似文献

Late Holocene variability in pelagic fish scales and dinoflagellate cysts along the west coast of Vancouver Island, NE Pacific Ocean 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Fish stocks and dinoflagellates are essential components of the marine food chain. Sediment cores from a predominantly anoxic basin in Effingham Inlet, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, archive a late Holocene (500–5300 years BP) record of paleoproductivity in the North American Coastal Upwelling Domain (CUD). We present evidence that late Holocene changes in the dinoflagellate cyst assemblages, sedimentary record, and fish stocks in the northeastern Pacific Ocean fluctuated, at least partially, in accordance with regional and global climate cycles.Principal components analysis (PCA), and trend, wavelet and spectral analyses were used to identify relationships, cycles and trends in sediment grey-scale values, and the abundances of fish scales and dinoflagellate cysts on centennial to millennial time scales. Most observed cycles fluctuated in intensity over time, particularly following transition of the regional climate to a higher rainfall phase that impacted coastal oceanic dynamics 3400 ± 150 years ago. Correlation of the marine paleoproductivity records observed in Effingham Inlet with solar influenced climate proxy cycles observed in the North Atlantic region indicates that solar forcing at different scales might have influenced the climate in the northeast Pacific as well. In particular an 1100- to 1400-year cycle in regional climate is well represented in the fish productivity proxy and sedimentological record. It was also observed that colder water, high-productivity, Selenopemphix nephroides and anchovy-dominated “Anchovy Regime” ecosystems alternate with warmer water, herring-dominated “Herring Regime” ecosystems at millennial time scales. The fish scale record preserved in Effingham Inlet indicates that the NE Pacific is now in transition from an ‘anchovy-’ to a ‘herring’-dominated regime. 相似文献

Leucetta 'chagosensis' is a widespread calcareous sponge, occurring in shaded habitats of Indo-Pacific coral reefs. In this study we explore relationships among 19 ribosomal DNA sequence types (the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region plus flanking gene sequences) found among 54 individuals from 28 locations throughout the western Pacific, with focus on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Maximum parsimony analysis revealed phylogeographical structuring into four major clades (although not highly supported by bootstrap analysis) corresponding to the northern/central GBR with Guam and Taiwan, the southern GBR and subtropical regions south to Brisbane, Vanuatu and Indonesia. Subsequent nested clade analysis (NCA) confirmed this structure with a probability of > 95%. After NCA of geographical distances, a pattern of range expansion from the internal Indonesian clade was inferred at the total cladogram level, as the Indonesian clade was found to be the internal and therefore oldest clade. Two distinct clades were found on the GBR, which narrowly overlap geographically in a line approximately from the Whitsunday Islands to the northern Swain Reefs. At various clade levels, NCA inferred that the northern GBR clade was influenced by past fragmentation and contiguous range expansion events, presumably during/after sea level low stands in the Pleistocene, after which the northern GBR might have been recolonized from the Queensland Plateau in the Coral Sea. The southern GBR clade is most closely related to subtropical L. 'chagosensis', and we infer that the southern GBR probably was recolonized from there after sea level low stands, based on our NCA results and supported by oceanographic data. Our results have important implications for conservation and management of the GBR, as they highlight the importance of marginal transition zones in the generation and maintenance of species rich zones, such as the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. 相似文献

A comprehensive study of the anatomy, ecology and distribution of the orthurethran genus Draparnaudia confirms its family-group status, and suggests a probable sister-group relationship with another Pacific family, the Partulidae; its previous position as a subfamily of the Enidae is refuted. Draparnaudia is endemic to New Caledonia, but records from the New Hebrides are thought to result from introductions. A total of six species are recognized in the taxonomic revision, including two new species. Spermatophores are recorded for the first time. 相似文献

In some sponges peculiar proteins called silicateins catalyze silica polymerization in ordered structures, and their study is of high interest for possible biotechnological applications in the nanostructure industry. In this work we describe the isolation and the molecular characterization of silicatein from spicules of Petrosia ficiformis, a common Mediterranean sponge, and the development of a cellular model (primmorphs) suitable for in vitro studies of silicatein gene regulation. The spicule of P. ficiformis contains an axial filament composed of 2 insoluble proteins, of 30 and 23 kDa. The 23-kDa protein was characterized, and the full-length cDNA was cloned. The putative amino acid sequence has high homology with previously described silicateins from other sponge species and also is very similar to cathepsins, a cystein protease family. Finally, P. ficiformis primmorphs express the silicatein gene, suggesting that they should be a good model for biosilicification studies. 相似文献

Understanding of evolution and systematics of Calcarea (Porifera) have not yet met a corresponding increase in the knowledge of diversity and distribution of these sponges in several parts of the world. Peru is an emblematic example of this lack of taxonomic knowledge, as only three shallow‐water species of sponges have hitherto been reported from its 3000 km coast. With the aim of studying sponges of Peru, an integrative taxonomy approach (morphology, molecules, and biogeography) was used in order to achieve sound species identifications. The first findings of Peruvian calcareous sponges are presented here. Eight species are described in the subclass Calcinea, of which five are new to science. The retrieved biogeographical patterns are either locally endemic, widespread, or discontinuous over large areas. Clathrina antofagastensis was previously known from Chile, while C. aurea and Ernstia tetractina had been reported from the Atlantic (Brazil), and thus represent the first genetically confirmed tropical amphi‐American distributions of species not yet found on both sides of the Isthmus of Panama. Our results reveal a richer Tropical East Pacific sponge fauna than the Warm Temperate South‐Eastern Pacific one. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London 相似文献

We investigated sperm cells and spermatophores of four species of Old World freshwater crabs belonging to three different genera of the subfamily Potaminae (family Potamidae). Characters previously believed to be apomorphic for the potamid subfamily Potamiscinae were also found to occur in the Potaminae. To infer the morphological ancestral character state combination of the Potamidae, ancestral character state analysis of four different sperm traits was performed, based on a 16S rDNA phylogeny of the investigated species. Comparing molecular phylogeny and character state distribution, several cases of convergent evolution could be identified. The densely packed, coenospermic spermatophores and the occurrence of a ‘tongue‐and‐groove’ connection between operculum and acrosomal zones are probably apomorphies for the whole Potamidae. The spermatozoa of Socotrapotamon socotrense show several unique characters. We also analysed the evolution of acrosome size. The sperm cells of the Potamidae and their sister‐group Gecarcinucidae only slightly overlap in acrosome size. Within the investigated species, the ‘East Asia’ subclade (subfamily Potamiscinae) developed significantly larger acrosomes than the subfamily Potaminae. Our results suggest that the use of brachyuran acrosome morphology for phylogenetic inference at the family level is strongly affected by small sample size, and by convergent character evolution. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010. 相似文献

Abstract. Svenzea zeai , abundant on many deep Caribbean fore-reef habitats but of uncertain systematic position within the Demospongiae, is closely examined histologically and cytologically for evidence of its phylogenetic relationship beyond the traditional analysis of gross morphology and skeletal structure. We document that S. zeai is a bacteriosponge containing substantial quantities of unicellular photosynthetic and autotrophic microbes; that the most abundant cell type is an unusual cell with refractile granules that only few species share and whose composition and function are still enigmatic; and that it produces the largest—by a factor of 3—embryos and larvae recorded in the phylum Porifera. A combination of characters such as the granular cells, ciliary pattern, and aspects of larval shape and behavior are comparable with those of Scopalina ruetzleri , family Dictyonellidae, a prominent member of the Caribbean mangrove community. These results support our earlier decision to establish Svenzea as a new genus in Dictyonellidae to accommodate its unprecedented skeletal structure, styles in isodictyal reticulation. 相似文献

We examined the female reproductive system of the yellowline arrow crab Stenorhynchus seticornis by means of histological and histochemical techniques. Mature specimens obtained in the field were kept in the laboratory for mating experiments. After 24 h, newly mated females were dissected, and their reproductive trait routinely processed for embedding in historesin. The specimens examined each possessed a pair of kidney‐shaped seminal receptacles (SR), and these we classified as ventral type, based on the location of the oviduct opening. The mesodermal dorsal region (DR) of SR consisted of a stratified epithelium with scaly cells, while the ectodermal ventral region (VR) was composed of a simple epithelium covered by a cuticle. The oviduct opened at the transition region (TR) between DR and VR and had no velum. The simple epithelium of TR had more folds on the face of the oviduct opening. The vagina exhibited the same features as the TR epithelium and was contiguous to VR, anchored by muscles. In the lumen, from one to three strata of sperm packets were observed, the dorsal one containing free sperm, and the most ventral stratum, spermatophores. An acidophilic glycoprotein layer enclosed the strata. Spermatophores in the ventral stratum were enclosed in a voluminous secretion, composed by acid polysaccharides most likely from the last male mated. The ventral‐type receptacle, stratified sperm packets, and polyandry, usually observed in females of Majoidea, suggest the occurrence of sperm competition in S. seticornis, favoring the sperm of the last male mated, as its sperm mass is located near the opening of the female oviduct. 相似文献

A survey of 28 Connecticut water bodies for spicular remainsoffreshwater sponges preserved in lacustrine sediments revealed14species representing 10 genera. Sediments were examined atfivelevels (ca 1991, ca 1970, ca 1934, ca 1890, ca 1875)todocument changes in species composition, distribution, andabundance. Five species were recorded statewide in all fivegeologic regions: Spongilla lacustris, Heteromeyeniatubisperma, Anheteromeyenia ryderi, Eunapius fragilis, andEphydatia muelleri. Spongilla lacustris was the mostcommonand widely distributed species. Factors that may havecontributedto the observed distribution of the spongillids in Connecticutareregional differences in lake water chemistries, individualspeciestolerances, and differences in extent of dispersal of variousspecies. Most of the more abundant species are widelydistributedwith respect to water quality parameters. Anheteromeyeniaargyrosperma, Duosclera mackayi and Trochospongillapennsylvanica appear to be restricted to waters exhibitingthelower ranges for conductivity, alkalinity and calcium content.Ingeneral, a greater number of spicules was found in bottomsedimentsof the surveyed lakes as compared with the surface sediments.Oftenthis was correlated with increased sediment accumulation ratesinmore recent periods. When this fact is taken into account, itappears that populations of a number of sponge species haveremained relatively constant in many of the lakes over thepastcentury. However, in some lakes exhibiting lower or onlyslightlyhigher sediment accumulation rates at the surface, fewerspiculeswere also found in more recent sediments, suggesting an actualdecline in sponge population sizes. Changes in abundance overthelast 100 years may be related to changes in land use practicesinsurrounding watersheds and the associated changes in waterchemistries. 相似文献
