Population behaviours associated with the migrations of coarse (non‐salmonid) fishes within river basins are amongst the most poorly understood dispersion mechanisms of temperate freshwater organisms, which in rivers are expected to be influenced by river discharge. We examined the timing and intensity of fish movements (via trapping) between the River Avon (Hampshire, England) and a small floodplain tributary, Ibsley Brook, and tested for correlations with trends in river discharge (i.e. mean cm of change in stage during trapping), water temperature and brook water velocity over twelve months in 1999–2000. 0‐group fishes dominated the catches. Intensities of movement between the brook and the river were similar in most months, but seasonal patterns were observed overall and for individual species. Few significant differences in overall numbers of fish were observed between the discharge trends, but many individual species demonstrated differences, mostly as more intense movement under fast rising discharge. Fish numbers in five species were correlated with river discharge trend, and movements in some species were correlated with the rate of temperature change (Δ° C 10 h sampling), and with changes in brook water velocity. Our results suggest daily movements between the river and small tributary brooks are triggered by changes in light intensity and water velocity, whereas seasonal movements of species between the river and brook are driven by changes in river discharge and water temperature, in particular associated with flood events. This study emphasizes the importance of connectivity in river systems, as fish movement between the Avon and its annexes occur under all flow regimes, but especially with rapidly rising discharge. 相似文献

Changes of the structure of a community of Spheciformes wasps (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) along a 15 year recovery gradient after
wildfires in a Mediterranean agroecosystem are reported and analysed. The species that contribute to determining the structure,
change in dominance amongst the most abundant species, and variation in guild structure of the community with the passage
of time since fire, as well as the environmental variables contributing to the structure of the community are also analyzed.
Mediterranean Spheciformes communities are highly resistant to fire. The sampling year, representative of different climate
conditions, and the time since the fire, were the main variables which affected community variation local conditions of the
habitat was more important than time since fire in determining community. Local conditions; presence of trophic resources,
nesting sites, and presence of prey for feeding the larvae, depended on climatological conditions and the time since fire.
Variations were detected in the dominance values of the most abundant species, together with displacements among species within
the same genus, as a function of the local conditions, the existing resources, and the time since the wildfire. Therefore,
change in community structure cannot be attributed solely to the effect of the fire, as both climatic and environmental conditions

We have studied the underlying factors responsible for the heterogeneous ecophysiological status of a semiarid Stipa tenacissima L. steppe in a subcatchment of SE Spain by assessing population composition and habitat structure of S. tenacissima stands. To do this, we measured and estimated 18 variables (11 biotic and seven abiotic) in 15 plots randomly distributed
in the subcatchment, and then zoned this area by plot affinity using PCA. This analysis produced three sectors determined
mainly by S. tenacissima cover and soil depth variables. The linear relationship fitted between S. tenacissima tussock biomass and tussock density in monospecific stands (both logarithmic) indicated a curve close to −1, suggesting that
the system is close to the maximum constant yield state. Ecophysiological measurements (gas exchange, fluorescence and individual
leaf area index) were taken in two periods with different water availability in a representative plot in each sector. The
intraspecific competition (inferred from the density dependence of green biomass) and rock outcrops were the main factors
influencing the ecophysiological status in the study area. While, in the wet season, intraspecific competition regulated water
consumption in zones where S. tenacissima tussocks (monospecific stands) are dominant, during the dry season, stands in zones with extensive rock outcrops and stone
cover (tussocks in “soil pockets”) had no access to non-rainfall water gains because of the adjacent bare soil, and so in
these stands, gas exchange was lower and photoinhibition higher. This article stresses the importance of considering the connection

Landscape genetics of the self-compatible forest herb Geum urbanum: effects of habitat age, fragmentation and local environment 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
To investigate the role of habitat fragmentation, fragment age and local environment in shaping the genetics of plant populations, we examined the genetic structure of the self-compatible forest herb Geum urbanum using microsatellite markers. A historical land-use reconstruction assigned the studied populations to two age classes: populations in primary forest fragments, and populations in secondary fragments. Local environmental conditions were quantified on the basis of the herb-layer community composition. A stepwise general linear model revealed that levels of within-population genetic diversity were best explained by population size, landscape connectivity and the interaction between both. Connectivity was positively correlated with the genetic diversity of small populations, but did not significantly affect the diversity of large populations. Contrary to what we expected, secondary-forest populations showed lower divergence relative to populations located in primary patches. Small populations were genetically more diverged compared to large populations. Mantel tests showed no significant isolation by distance and no significant correlation between habitat similarity and genetic differentiation. We conclude that gene flow has probably prevented founder events from being reflected in the present genetic structure of G. urbanum. Gene flow towards low-connectivity populations, however, seemed to be insufficient to counteract the effects of drift in small populations. 相似文献

1. The hypothesis was tested that perennial plants surviving in habitats frequently disturbed by floods should demonstrate the ability to escape the frequently scoured surficial zone by using refugia located deeper in the substrate. As a consequence, they should allocate more biomass to their underground parts than when growing in rarely disturbed habitats.
2. The allocation of biomass of three aquatic macrophytes ( Berula erecta , Groenlandia densa , Myriophyllum spicatum ) to their different organs (underground and above-ground parts) was measured in former river channels organized along a gradient of scouring flood disturbances.
3. For each species, biomass allocation to underground parts varied between sites: from 10.2 to 37.5% in B. erecta , from 14.9 to 31.1% in G. densa and from 8.4 to 23.2% in M. spicatum . The zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, has spread through eastern North American aquatic ecosystems during the past 15 years. Whereas spread among navigable waterways
was rapid, the invasion of isolated watersheds has progressed more slowly and less predictably. We examined the patterns of
overland spread over multiple spatial and temporal extents including individual lake districts, states, and multi-state regions
in the USA and found that only a small proportion (<8%) of suitable inland lakes have been invaded, with the rate of invasion
appearing to be slowing. Of the 293 lakes known to be invaded, 97% are located in states adjacent to the Laurentian Great
Lakes with over half located in Michigan. Only six states have more than 10 invaded lakes and only in Michigan and Indiana
have more than 10% of suitable lakes become invaded. At smaller spatial extents, invaded lakes are often clustered within
a lake-rich region across southern Michigan and northern Indiana. This clustering appears primarily due to multiple overland
invasions originating from the Great Lakes followed to a lesser extent by subsequent secondary overland and downstream dispersal.
Downstream spread appears responsible for only one third of the inland invasions. Temporally, invasions peaked in the late
1990s, with only 13 new invasions (0.4% of suitable lakes) reported in 2003 in the four-state region surrounding Lake Michigan.
Peak rates of invasion occurred 4–6 years earlier in Michigan relative to Indiana and Wisconsin, but this time lag is likely
due to differences in the establishment of Great Lake source populations rather than ‘stepping stone’ dispersal across the

Although trait evolution over contemporary timescales is well documented, its influence on ecological dynamics in the wild has received much less attention particularly compared to traditional ecological and environmental factors. For example, evolution over ecologically relevant timescales is expected in populations that colonize new habitats, where it should theoretically enhance fitness, associated vital rates of survival and reproduction, and population growth potential. Nonetheless, success of exotic species is much more commonly attributed to ecological aspects of habitat quality and 'escape from enemies' in the invaded range. Here, we consider contemporary evolution of vital rates in introduced Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) that quickly colonized New Zealand and diverged over c. 26 generations. By using experimental translocations, we partitioned the roles of evolution and habitat quality in modifying geographical patterns of vital rates. Variation in habitat quality within the new range had the greatest influence on broad geographical patterns of vital rates, but locally adapted salmon still exhibited more than double the vital rate performance, and hence fitness, of nonlocal counterparts. The scope of this fitness evolution far exceeds the scale of divergence in trait values for these populations, or even the expected fitness effects of particular traits. These results suggest that contemporary evolution can be an important part of the eco-evolutionary dynamics of invasions and highlight the need for studies of the emergent fitness and ecological consequences of such evolution, rather than just changes in trait values. 相似文献

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) and sleep fragmentation and deprivation. Exposure to CIH results in oxidative stress in the cortex, hippocampus and basal forebrain of rats and mice. We show that sustained and intermittent hypoxia induces antioxidant responses, an indicator of oxidative stress, in the rat cerebellum and pons. Increased glutathione reductase (GR) activity and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels were observed in the pons and cerebellum of rats exposed to CIH or chronic sustained hypoxia (CSH) compared with room air (RA) controls. Exposure to CIH or CSH increased GR activity in the pons, while exposure to CSH increased the level of TBARS in the cerebellum. The level of TBARS was increased to a greater extent after exposure to CSH than to CIH in the cerebellum and pons. Increased superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) and decreased total glutathione (GSHt) levels were observed after exposure to CIH compared with CSH only in the pons. We have previously shown that prolonged sleep deprivation decreased SOD activity in the rat hippocampus and brainstem, without affecting the cerebellum, cortex or hypothalamus. We therefore conclude that sleep deprivation and hypoxia differentially affect antioxidant responses in different brain regions. 相似文献

Summary According to density-dependent habitat selection theory, reproductive success should decline with increased density. Fitness should be similar between habitats if habitat selection follows an ideal free distribution; fitness should be dissimilar between habitats if habitat selection is modified by territorial behavior. I tested these assumptions by examining a variety of fitness estimates obtained from white-footed mice living in nest boxes in forest, forest edge and fencerow habitats in southwestern Ontario. As expected, mean litter size declined with increased population density. Litter sizes, adult longevity and the proportion of adult animals in breeding condition were not significantly different among the three habitats. The success at recruiting at least one offspring to the adult population and the number of recruits per litter were much greater in the forest than in either of the other two habitats. Fitness was thus unequal among habitats and the results confirm both assumptions of density-dependent habitat selection theory for territorial white-footed mice. 相似文献

1. Hydroregime (duration, frequency and predictability of the aquatic phase) is a key feature of temporary aquatic habitats that not only moulds community structure and diversity (species sorting) but also life history characteristics of the inhabitants (natural selection). However, since hydroregime is a complex multidimensional entity that cannot be estimated from short term observations, morphometric variables are commonly used as proxies for hydroregime, making it impossible to separate effects of habitat size and hydroregime on biota.
2. We have used a simple hydrological model, validated with recent (average r2 = 96%) and historic water level observations (average r 2 = 81%), to accurately reconstruct hydroregime based on historical rainfall and evaporation data in a cluster of 36 temporary rock pools in central South Africa.
3. Using the model output, we demonstrated that both hydroregime and habitat size had unique and shared effects on temporary pool biota and that these effects depended on the dispersal modes of the taxa. Model-generated hydrological data explained more variation in community patterns than short-term observations of hydroperiod. Hydroregime was more important for passive dispersers than for active dispersers that can migrate when pools dry up. Basin morphometry was a relatively poor predictor of pool hydroregime. We concluded that simple modelling may greatly improve the resolution of studies linking hydroregime to biological variables.

The bees (Hymenoptera: Apiformes) are important pollinators in many ecosystems, but their diversity has declined in Europe during the past century, mainly due to habitat loss. However, some of the habitat requirements of wild bees are met in anthropogenic landscape elements, such as road sides, power-line strips and field edges. Moreover, as the bee species assemblages change throughout the season the habitat requirements of the bee fauna may change accordingly. Understanding such seasonally distinct responses of solitary bees with different phenologies may be of high value for local conservation planning. The purpose of this study was to examine if the habitat quality of field edges for solitary bees change throughout the season, and how this temporal variation relates to local habitat and landscape conditions. By sampling solitary bees in 18 field edges in southeast Norway throughout the season we found that the species richness and abundance of bees was highest in sun exposed field edges, independently of the season. However, we found phenologically distinct responses to the landscape context. Moreover, field edges situated in landscapes with a high proportion of forests and semi-natural landscape elements hosted the most phenologically diverse bee species assemblages. We conclude that in order to fulfil the habitat requirements of bee species assemblages throughout the season, one should conserve and direct habitat restoration schemes towards increasing sun exposure at field edges with a diverse flora and a high proportion of semi-natural areas in the vicinity. 相似文献

Efforts to restore habitat connectivity for an upland tropical rainforest fauna: A trial of underpasses below roads 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Summary Four large underpasses, specifically designed for movements by fauna, form part of a major road upgrade project on the Atherton Tablelands in northeast Queensland, Australia. We describe the design and rationale of a project to test their effectiveness in restoring habitat continuity for tropical rainforest fauna. The large blocks of upland rainforest divided by the road are recognized for their high faunal conservation significance, forming habitat for many rare or threatened species. Ecologists, road engineers and the Atherton Tablelands conservation community have united with a common conservation goal: to design the 'furniture' within the underpasses and accomplish rainforest revegetation to provide protective cover and attract fauna to underpass entrances. Prior to construction, small mammals were trapped weekly for several months in habitats close to the road upgrade. The small mammal community comprised grassland species in abandoned pasture and differed significantly from the rainforest specialists found in three closed canopy habitats: rainforest edge, rainforest interior and Lantana shrubland. Rainforest restoration works designed to restore connectivity for rainforest fauna across this abandoned pastureland (via the underpasses to major rainforest blocks to the north and south of the road) are currently in progress. Monitoring of the effectiveness of the underpasses in allowing faunal movements will involve the use of infra-red-triggered cameras within the underpasses and near underpass entrances, and a survey of road-killed fauna both prior to and postconstruction. Further examination of small mammal community structure and movements, with respect to both the new road and the underpasses, will be undertaken once rainforest plantings have become established. This evaluation should provide insights for further road-associated restoration projects in rainforest regions. 相似文献

1. Refugia are critical to the persistence of individuals, populations and communities in disturbed environments, yet few studies have considered how the position of refugia within the landscape interacts with the behavioural responses of component species to determine the influence of disturbance events on mobile animals. 2. An 18‐month quantitative electrofishing survey was undertaken on the Selwyn River, a stream that is intermittent in its middle reaches, to determine how the direction and distance to refugia affect the response of fish populations to drying, and how landscape context interacts with flow permanence to produce spatial patterns in communities. 3. Overall, the propensity of fish to take refuge in perennial reaches during drying episodes, and the rate and extent of recolonization from these refugia upon rewetting, depended upon the direction and distance to refugia and the behaviour of component species. 4. In the upper river, Canterbury galaxias (Galaxias vulgaris), upland bullies (Gobiomorphus breviceps) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) migrated upstream to permanent water as the stream dried from the bottom up, but frequent drying and slow recolonization by most species combined to produce a fish community in intermittent reaches that was quantitatively and qualitatively different to that in neighbouring perennial reaches. 5. In the lower river, fish did not appear to migrate downstream to permanent water as the stream dried from the top down, but a lower frequency of drying episodes and faster recolonization by upland bullies and eels (Anguilla spp.) from downstream refugia allowed the fish community in intermittent reaches to converge with that in neighbouring perennial reaches during prolonged wetted periods. 6. Longitudinal patterns of increasing fish density and species richness with flow permanence are interpreted as the product of species‐specific responses to drying events and the spatial position of refugia within the riverscape. 相似文献

Habitat structure is often assumed to be a predictor of habitat function. However, habitat structure may be insufficient to predict the functional significance of a habitat if the level of resources in the habitat is a consequence of the interaction between the habitat structure and physical or biological factors. In this study, we investigated whether depressions in tidal flat sediments generated by stout razor clams, Tagelus plebeius, affect the spatial patterns of pit digging by deposit-feeding burrowing crabs, Chasmagnathus granulata. The pits dug by crabs while feeding overlapped with clam siphon holes at a frequency higher than expected at random, and measurements of pit-digging by crabs integrated over several days indicated a higher frequency of feeding in the sediment of depressions. The daily frequency of pit-digging by crabs in depressions was positively related to the organic matter content of their sediments, but was significantly higher than the frequency of pit-digging away from clam siphon holes only after events of high bedload sediment transport, when the organic matter in the sediments of these depressions peaked. This example demonstrates the conditional nature of the relationship between habitat structure and function by illustrating how a physical process—bedload sediment transport—may introduce variation in the function that depressions play as feeding sites for burrowing crabs. Published information suggests that such conditional responses of organisms to habitat structure: (1) occur in a variety of habitats; (2) involve a variety of structures either of biotic or abiotic origin; and (3) are the consequence of either physical or biological controls that vary in importance according to the general mechanism through which habitat structure affect resources. This broad experimental evidence suggests that the accuracy of predictive models linking habitat structure and function can be improved by incorporating a mechanistic perspective that allows recognition of the potential for conditional responses of organisms to habitat structure. 相似文献

Many bats are threatened by habitat loss, but opportunities to manage their habitats are now increasing. Success of management depends greatly on the capacity to determine where and how interventions should take place, so models predicting how animals use landscapes are important to plan them. Bats are quite distinctive in the way they use space for foraging because (i) most are colonial central-place foragers and (ii) exploit scattered and distant resources, although this increases flying costs. To evaluate how important distances to resources are in modelling foraging bat habitat suitability, we radio-tracked two cave-dwelling species of conservation concern (Rhinolophus mehelyi and Miniopterus schreibersii) in a Mediterranean landscape. Habitat and distance variables were evaluated using logistic regression modelling. Distance variables greatly increased the performance of models, and distance to roost and to drinking water could alone explain 86 and 73% of the use of space by M. schreibersii and R. mehelyi, respectively. Land-cover and soil productivity also provided a significant contribution to the final models. Habitat suitability maps generated by models with and without distance variables differed substantially, confirming the shortcomings of maps generated without distance variables. Indeed, areas shown as highly suitable in maps generated without distance variables proved poorly suitable when distance variables were also considered. We concluded that distances to resources are determinant in the way bats forage across the landscape, and that using distance variables substantially improves the accuracy of suitability maps generated with spatially explicit models. Consequently, modelling with these variables is important to guide habitat management in bats and similarly mobile animals, particularly if they are central-place foragers or depend on spatially scarce resources. 相似文献

Aspen lichens in agricultural and forest landscapes: the importance of habitat quality 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The amount of aspen Populus tremula , has declined in the boreal forest landscape. This decline is especially marked in young and intermediate stands due to the lack of regeneration. Aspen regeneration is nowadays mainly restricted to abandoned agricultural land. The decrease of aspen is of particular concern as it has more host-specific species than any other boreal tree species. The main question addressed is whether regenerating aspen stands in agricultural habitats can compensate for the deficiency of young stands in the forest. Data on epiphytic macrolichens show that cyanolichens increased, in number and frequency, with stand age in the forest landscape, and that there was a striking difference in species composition between stands in the two landscapes. Lichens with cyanobacterial and green-algal photobionts dominated in the forest and agricultural stands, respectively. Notably, cyanolichens were not found in stands younger than 50 yr in the forest, and stands younger than 100 yr in the agricultural landscape. This difference between the landscapes cannot be explained by stand age, stand size or isolation. Instead, differences in habitat quality, due to differences in the physical environment associated with the presence of conifers in the older forest stands, appear to be involved. We suggest that in order to conserve cyanolichens that are confined to aspen, active management practices have to be adopted that promote the regeneration of aspen in the forest landscape, and the establishment of conifers in areas where aspen regeneration is confined to the agricultural landscape. In addition, until new aspen stands with appropriate physical environments have been established, these measures must be combined with the preservation of existing old-growth stands, which can provide appropriate source populations. 相似文献
