Magnetic isotope and magnetic field effects on the rate of DNA synthesis catalysed by polymerases β with isotopic ions 24Mg2+, 25Mg2+ and 26Mg2+ in the catalytic sites were detected. No difference in enzymatic activity was found between polymerases β carrying 24Mg2+ and 26Mg2+ ions with spinless, non-magnetic nuclei 24Mg and 26Mg. However, 25Mg2+ ions with magnetic nucleus 25Mg were shown to suppress enzymatic activity by two to three times with respect to the enzymatic activity of polymerases β with 24Mg2+ and 26Mg2+ ions. Such an isotopic dependence directly indicates that in the DNA synthesis magnetic mass-independent isotope effect functions. Similar effect is exhibited by polymerases β with Zn2+ ions carrying magnetic 67Zn and non-magnetic 64Zn nuclei, respectively. A new, ion–radical mechanism of the DNA synthesis is suggested to explain these effects. Magnetic field dependence of the magnesium-catalysed DNA synthesis is in a perfect agreement with the proposed ion–radical mechanism. It is pointed out that the magnetic isotope and magnetic field effects may be used for medicinal purposes (trans-cranial magnetic treatment of cognitive deceases, cell proliferation, control of the cancer cells, etc).  相似文献

The ability of some animals, most notably migratory birds, to sense magnetic fields is still poorly understood. It has been suggested that this "magnetic sense" may be mediated by the blue light receptor protein cryptochrome, which is known to be localized in the retinas of migratory birds. Cryptochromes are a class of photoreceptor signaling proteins that are found in a wide variety of organisms and that primarily perform regulatory functions, such as the entrainment of circadian rhythm in mammals and the inhibition of hypocotyl growth in plants. Recent experiments have shown that the activity of cryptochrome-1 in Arabidopsis thaliana is enhanced by the presence of a weak external magnetic field, confirming the ability of cryptochrome to mediate magnetic field responses. Cryptochrome's signaling is tied to the photoreduction of an internally bound chromophore, flavin adenine dinucleotide. The spin chemistry of this photoreduction process, which involves electron transfer from a chain of three tryptophans, can be modulated by the presence of a magnetic field in an effect known as the radical-pair mechanism. Here we present and analyze a model of the flavin-adenine-dinucleotide-tryptophan chain system that incorporates realistic hyperfine coupling constants and reaction rate constants. Our calculations show that the radical-pair mechanism in cryptochrome can produce an increase in the protein's signaling activity of approximately 10% for magnetic fields on the order of 5 G, which is consistent with experimental results. These calculations, in view of the similarity between bird and plant cryptochromes, provide further support for a cryptochrome-based model of avian magnetoreception.  相似文献

Summary Under a strong magnetic field, the diamagnetic, properties of biological cells modulate the behavior of the cells themselves, under conditions of both floating and adherence. The morphological effects of strong static magnetic fields on adherent cells are less well understood than the effects of magnetic fields on red blood cells. In the present study, a high-intensity magnetic field of 14 T affected the morphology of smooth muscle cell assemblies, and the shapes of the cell colonies extended along the direction of the magnetic flux. The phenomenon was most notable, under magnetic fields of more than 10 T, where an ellipsoidal pattern of smooth muscle cell colonies was clearly observed. The ellipticity of the cell colony pattern with a 14-T magnetic field was 1.3, whereas that with a field of 0–8 T was close to a circle at about 1.0. The evidence that smooth muscle cells detect high-density magnetic flux and thus change their cell orientation was shown as a visible pattern of cellular colonies. The speculated mechanism is a diamagnetic torque force acting on cytoskeleton fibers, which are dynamically polymerizing-depolymerizing during cell division and cell migration.  相似文献

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) and three species of blowflies (Calliphora vomitoria, Lucilia caesar and L. sericata) were observed on mass-pollinated populations of onions (Allium cepa) in 4·4 × 3·6 m × 2-2·5 m cages in June-August 1977. Pollination activity at temperatures from 14° to 28°C was compared on the basis of mean time per flower touched on each umbel visit. Honeybees did not forage below 16°C. Above 16°C their mean time per flower was short (1·4 s) and varied little with temperature. For blowflies, it decreased markedly from 12·1 s at 14–15·5°C to 2·7 s at 26°C and above, largely because at low temperatures flies spent long periods quiescent or grooming rather than actively feeding. When flowering was not completely synchronous between cultivars, honeybees were more selective than blowflies, but where flowering was synchronous, both types of pollinator visited the two cultivars at random. For the size of cage used, neither type of insect had a distinct advantage as a pollinator of onions, despite their different behaviour patterns.  相似文献

In recent years, there has been a great deal of publicity concerning the possible health effects of electric and/or magnetic field exposure. One of the most frequently reported observations after the exposure of animals to either electric or magnetic fields relates to alterations in the metabolism of serotonin (5HT) to melatonin within the pineal gland. This review summarizes these results particularly in animals exposed to intermittently inverted, non-time varying magnetic fields, i.e., pulsed static magnetic fields. When exposure occurs at night, the conversation of 5HT to melatonin is typically depressed, not unlike that after light exposure at night. The mechanisms by which pulsed magnetic fields alter the ability of the pineal to convert 5HT to the chief pineal hormone melatonin remains unknown but may involve effects on any or all of the following: the retinas, the suprachiasmatic nuclei, the peripheral sympathetic nervous system, and the pinealocytes. Results to date suggest that induced electrical currents (eddy currents) produced by the pulsed magnetic fields are particularly detrimental to pineal indoleamine metabolism and may be an important causative factor in the metabolic changes measured. The physiological consequences of perturbations in the melatonin rhythm induced by magnetic field exposure remain unknown.  相似文献

The defensive behavior of 52 hybrid honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies from four sets of crosses was studied and compared with that of European and Africanized bee colonies. Colonies containing F(1) hybrid workers were obtained through reciprocal crosses between European and Africanized bees. The total number of stings deposited by workers in a moving leather patch in 1 min was recorded. In each of the four sets of crosses, bees from hybrid colonies of Africanized paternity left more stings in leather patches than bees from hybrid colonies of European paternity. Results strongly suggest paternal effects of African origin increasing the defensive behavior of hybrid colonies. Although some degree of dominance was observed for high-defensive behavior in one of the four sets of crosses involving European paternity, most of the dominance effects reported in the literature appear to be the result of paternal effects. Several hypotheses to explain this phenomenon, as well as the implications of these effects on the fitness and breeding of honeybees are discussed.  相似文献

Rabbit islets of Langerhans were exposed at 37 °C for 18 h to a low-frequency-pulsed magnetic field, generated in paired Helmholtz coils. Exposed islets showed a reduction of 26.1 ± 4.3% in 45Ca2+ content (P < .004). a reduction of 25.1 ± 6.3% in 45Ca2+ efflux (P < .006), and a reduction of 35.0 ± 8.7% (P < .002) in insulin released during glucose stimulation when compared with appropriate controls.  相似文献

Changes in the bidirectional interaction between the nervous and the immune systems have been proposed as a cause of ageing. Neuropeptides, such as neuropeptide Y (NPY), could show different effects on immune function with age. In the present work, we have studied the in vitro action of a wide range of NPY concentrations, i.e. from 10(-13) to 10(-7) M, on natural killer (NK) activity, a function which decreases with age. Spleen, axillary nodes, thymus and peritoneum leukocytes from mice of different ages: young (12+/-2 weeks), adult (24+/-2 weeks), mature (50+/-2 weeks) and old (72+/-2 weeks) were used. Stimulation by NPY of NK activity was observed in adult and mature animals in axillary nodes and thymus, and an inhibition in the spleen from young mice. The specificity of the NPY effect on cytotoxic activity was confirmed using a C-terminal fragment of NPY. Furthermore, cAMP levels in leukocytes were found to be decreased by NPY in adult mice, suggesting an involvement of this messenger system in the NK modulation by this neuropeptide.  相似文献

Freshly harvested seeds of soybean and barley were artificially aged. The progeny showed a marked decrease in mitotic index and chromosomal aberrations of various types increased at both mitosis and meiosis, resulting in a significant loss of pollen viability as the ageing advanced. Studies on the types and frequencies of chlorophyll deficients and phenodeviants also showed an overall increase, suggesting that ageing mimics irradiation effects and produces alterations in the gene complexes resulting in the segregation of different kinds of phenotypic mutations.  相似文献

Selection can favour the evolution of a high reproductive rate early in life even when this results in a subsequent increase in the rate of mortality, because selection is relatively weak late in life. However, the optimal reproductive schedule of a female may be suboptimal to any one of her mates, and males may thus be selected to modulate female reproductive rate. Owing to such sexual conflict, coevolution between males and females may contribute to the evolution of senescence. By using replicated beetle populations selected for reproduction at an early or late age, we show that males evolve to affect senescence in females in a manner consistent with the genetic interests of males. 'Late' males evolved to decelerate senescence and increase the lifespan of control females, relative to 'early' males. Our findings demonstrate that adaptive evolution in one sex may involve its effects on senescence in the other, showing that the evolution of optimal life histories in one sex may be either facilitated or constrained by genes expressed in the other.  相似文献

The influence of a moderately intense static magnetic field on movement patterns of free swimming Paramecium was studied. When exposed to fields of 0.126 T, these ciliated protozoa exhibited significant reduction in velocity as well as a disorganization of movement pattern. It is suggested that these findings may be explained on the basis of alteration in function of ion specific channels within the cell membrane.  相似文献

The effect of weak disturbance (up to 300 microT) of natural magnetic field on the development of alcohol addiction in rats exposed to information load (training in a complex maze) was studied. It was found that learning against the background of inhomogenous magnetic field led to 3-13-fold increase of alcohol intake in 100% of rats. At the same time, under conditions of the same information load against the background of natural magnetic field, this phenomenon was observed in 45% of animals and was less expressed (a 2.4-fold increase). Unlike the control groups, the effect of magnetic field was independent neither on the level of initial alcohol preference, nor on the exploratory ability of animals. The increased alcohol uptake persisted for two months after the termination of the information load. It is suggested that the higher energetic level is needed in the presence of the weak inhomogenous magnetic field for normal exploratory activity. In this case, ethanol can serve as an additional source of energy.  相似文献

Numerous studies suggest that honeybees may compete with native pollinators where introduced as non-native insects. Here we examine evidence for competition between honeybees and four bumblebee species in Scotland, a region that may be within the natural range of honeybees, but where domestication greatly increases the honeybee population. We examined mean thorax widths (a reliable measure of body size) of workers of Bombus pascuorum, B. lucorum, B. lapidarius and B. terrestris at sites with and without honeybees. Workers of all four species were significantly smaller in areas with honeybees. We suggest that reduced worker size is likely to have implications for bumblebee colony success. These results imply that, for conservation purposes, some restrictions should be considered with regard to placing honeybee hives in or near areas where populations of rare bumblebee species persist.  相似文献

The effect of hypoxia on activity of metabolism was studied in developing and adult honeybees. The feedback was established between the O2 deficit in the gas medium and its consumption by honeybees. An elevation of temperature within the limits of vital diapason for development of honeybees activated O2 consumption regardless of the hypoxia level. A prolonged action of hypoxia on the O2 physiological state was revealed. There was shown the existence of convergent similarity between the effect of O2 deficit on honeybees and on homoiothermal animals.  相似文献
