After its recent introduction to Chile, the aphid Chaitophorus leucomelas Koch is becoming a serious pest affecting commercial poplar, Populus spp., plantations. The pattern of natural infestation of C. leucomelas among poplar hybrids with different pedigrees and the aphid intrinsic rate of increase (r(m)), of C. leucomelas were assessed in the field. In most of the hybrids, aphid abundance peaked in March (late summer). Among 12 types of poplar crosses, [(P. trichocarpa Torr. & Gray x P. deltoides Bartram ex Marshall) x (P. trichocarpa x P. deltoides)] and [(P. trichocarpa x P. maximowiczii Henry) x P. maximowiczii] showed the highest and lowest aphid densities, respectively. A trend to find more aphids in branch bases was apparent. The intrinsic rate of C. leucomelas increase was higher in [(P. trichocarpa x P. deltoides) x P. deltoides] hybrids, and lower in [(P. trichocarpa x P. maximowiczii) x P. trichocarpa] hybrids. Aphid density and performance were higher in hybrids with P. deltoides parentage, whereas hybrids with P. maximowiczii parentage showed lower aphid densities and performance. Hybrids with P. nigra L. parentage, namely, [P. trichocarpa x P. nigra], also had high aphid density, but aphid performance was lower compared with hybrids with P. deltoides parentage. These results suggest that among poplar hybrids studied, susceptibility to C. leucomelas is inherited through P. deltoides, whereas resistance seems to be inherited through P. maximowiczii. Thus, P. maximowiczii hybrids are recommended for commercial or ornamental planting programs in zones where there is a high risk of aphid infestation. 相似文献

The aphid Chaitophorus leucomelas Koch (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is one of the most important pests of poplar (Populus spp.) plantations in Iran. In this study, development, reproduction, and life history of the aphid were assessed on 11 poplar clones; belong to three species, Populus nigra L., Populus deltoides Bartram ex Marshall, and Populus. euramericana Guinier. The experiments were carried out under controlled conditions at 24 +/- 1 degrees C, 50-60% RH, and a photoperiod of 12:12 (L:D) h. The developmental time at immature stage ranged from 10 to 12 d. Nymphs reproduced per female were ranged from 49 to 98 nymphs on Populus deltoides var. missoriensis and P. deltoides 72/51, respectively. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r(m)) varied from 0.176 to 0.264 d(-1) among poplar clones. The r(m) values of the aphids were adversely affected in P. euramericana 242 in comparison with P. nigra 56/72 and P. nigra 63/135. In addition, the jackknife estimates of net reproductive rate (R0) indicated the presence of resistance among poplar clones. R0 ranged from 16.48 on P. nigra var. betulifoli to 47.53 on P. nigra 63/135. Mean generation times (T) was last 17.56 d on P. euramericana 242 to 14.51 d on P. deltoides 69/55. However, doubling time (DT) was 3.87 d on P. euramericana var. grandis to 2.63 d on P. nigra 63/135. The finite rate of increase (lambda) was 1.192 on resistant clone (P. euramericana 242) and 1.302 on susceptible clone (P. nigra 63/135). These results indicate that variation in life-table parameters could be an important component of variation in resistance to C. leucomelas in poplar. 相似文献

This research aims to examine the effect of phenolics on pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum) (Homoptera: Aphididae) development and feeding behaviour, on leaves of selected low-saponin lines of Radius alfalfa (Medicago sativa). There was a slight, negative correlation (Spearman rank correlation r
s = −0.80) between concentrations of saponins and phenols. Lines with higher concentrations of saponins had less phenolics.
Levels of phenolics in low-saponin lines of alfalfa cv. Radius were related to their acceptance by the pea aphid. Our data
revealed an inverse relationship between level of phenolics and the aphid abundance and its biology on studied alfalfa lines.
Larval development of the pea aphid was longer, reproduction period was shorter, and the fecundity was lower on low-saponin
lines with higher level of phenolics. There were observed some tendencies in the pea aphid feeding behaviour on these lines:
prolonging the probing of the peripheral tissues (epidermis and mesophyll) and shortening the period of phloem sap ingestion.
The better hosts for the pea aphid were low-saponin lines with low levels of phenolic compounds. 相似文献

The influence of leaf epicuticular waxes of nine woody species from cerrado (a savanna ecosystem of Brazil) on the foraging
behavior of the leaf-cutting antAtta sexdens rubropilosa Forel, 1908 (Formicidae, Attini) was investigated. Some waxes showed neither inhibitory nor attractive effect over a series
of tests, while a second group caused a delayed rejection. Waxes of two species were shown to be strongly deterrent to the
ants. Since different waxes caused different responses, it is concluded that their chemical composition, rather than hydrophobicity
or mechanical constraints, accounts for the observed effects. Plant species with leaves rejected by the ants did not necessarily
have repellent waxes. On the other hand, no species with acceptable leaves yielded waxes with deterrent effects. 相似文献

The probing and feeding behaviour of the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), (Homoptera, Aphididae) was studied on several plant species that represented various levels of acceptability: Sinapis alba L. (a permanent host plant), Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Med., Thlaspi arvense L., Lunaria annua L., Erysimum cheiranthoides L. (accidental host plants), Vicia faba L. (a non-host plant), using the electrical penetration graph technique (EPG). B. brassicae on V. faba did not show any patterns related to penetration of phloem vessels. Stylet penetration was deterred on L. annua and E. cheiranthoides where non-penetration prevailed, the periods of sap ingestion were short or did not occur, the percentage of time spent in the phloem was consistently low (5–6%) and E1 salivation predominated. The pathway activities were not suppressed on C. bursa-pastoris and T. arvense and the aphids spent an average of 3 h in the phloem during the 8-h experiment. However, a considerable delay between finding and accepting the phloem and a substantial proportion of E1 salivation (20–30% of all phloem activities) indicated a deterrent factor in the sieve elements of these plants. Aphid probing and sap ingestion were rarely interrupted on S. alba. The results of this study suggest that the deterrent agents vary in activity and may hinder stylet penetration at different levels (epidermis, parenchymatous tissues and/or phloem elements), depending on the plant species. 相似文献

Epidermal conductance in different parts of durum wheat grown under Mediterranean conditions: the role of epicuticular waxes and stomata 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
Abstract. Epidermal (non-stomatally-controlled) conductance from the fourth leaf, first node leaf, flag leaf and ear of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum var durum L.) grown under Mediterranean field conditions has been measured, along with leaf stomatal frequency and the amount and distribution of epicuticular waxes. Measurements were carried out on varieties and land-races from the Middle East, North Africa, ‘Institut National de la Recherche Agricole’ (INRA) and ‘Centra Internacional de Mejora de Maiz y Trigo’ (CIMMYT). Significant differences were observed among genotypes in the epidermal conductances (ge) of the four organs. For each of the four organs tested, genotypes from the Middle East and CIMMYT showed higher ge. values than those from North Africa and INRA. Ears showed epidermal conductances that were more than four times higher than those of leaves when ge. values were expressed per unit dry weight. The amount of epicuticular waxes was higher in the fourth leaves, intermediate in the first node and flag leaves and lower in the ears. For each organ, ge differences among genotypes were unrelated with the amount of epicuticular waxes. Removal of epicuticular waxes by dipping the organs into chloroform significantly increased the epidermal conductance for the fourth and first node leaves and the ear. However, this did not occur for the flag leaf. For the fourth leaf, ge of intact leaves and ge of leaves in which epicuticular waxes were removed were unrelated (r = -0.265). The regression coefficient of this relation for the first node and flag leaves showed values of 0.666 and 0.650 (P > 0.05), respectively, and values were even higher in the ear (r > m 0.892, P > 0.01). Scanning electron microscope analysis showed that wax bloom decreased from the fourth leaf to the flag leaf, whereas the extent of amorphous wax increased. Wax bloom in leaves consisted mainly of deposits of thin wax plates. In the ears and the adaxial surface of flag leaves, fibrillar waxes predominated. In the first node and flag leaves, the wax deposits on the adaxial side cover the surface of the leaf more densely and uniformly than those on the abaxial side. There was no significant correlation between ge and total stomatal density, or between ge and either adaxial or abaxial stomatal density for any sample of the three different leaves. The contribution of epicuticular waxes plus total stomatal frequency only explained 42.4, 11.8, 28.3 and 16% of ge (per unit leaf area) variations for the fourth leaf, first node leaf, flag leaf and the combined variation of the three leaves together, respectively. From these results, it is concluded that complex interrelationship between different morphophysiological characteristics probably control ge differences among genotypes and that these interrelationships differ for each different plant part. 相似文献

Variation in the reproductive mode of melon aphid Aphis gossypii Glover occurred on the large geographic scale, but the performance of different reproductive modes to use host plant is poorly understood. Life tables of melon aphid population that undergo the anholocyclic, androcyclic, and intermediate reproductive mode were conducted on different host plants. The results showed that the anholocyclic and androcyclic strains could become adults and produce offspring on cotton Gossypium hirsutum L., whereas the intermediate strain could not. The survival rate, net reproductive rate (R(0)), and intrinsic rate of natural increase (r(m)) of the androcyclic strain on cotton were significantly greater than that of the anholocyclic strain. The three strains could aptly use cucurbits host plants including cucumber Cucumis sativa L., pumpkin Cucurbita moschata (Duchesne ex Lam.), and zucchini Cucurbita pepo L.; survival rate and R(0) were not significantly different on these two host plants. Moreover, the r(m) of the anholocyclic strain on cucumber and the androcyclic strain on pumpkin and zucchini were significantly greater than that of the other two strains. The abilities of the three strains to use a host plant were flexible, because their r(m) on pumpkin or zucchini became equal after rearing for four successive generations; furthermore, the intermediate strain attained the ability to use cotton, and the performance of anholocyclic and intermediate strains to use cotton also significantly increased after feeding on pumpkin or zucchini for one or three generations. It was concluded that the reproductive mode and feeding experience affected the performance of melon aphid to use a host plant. 相似文献

Aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae) saliva, when injected into host plants during feeding, causes physiological changes in hosts that facilitate aphid feeding and cause injury to plants. Comparing salivary constituents among aphid species could help identify which salivary products are universally important for general aphid feeding processes, which products are involved with specific host associations, or which products elicit visible injury to hosts. We compared the salivary proteins from five aphid species, namely, Diuraphis noxia (Kurdjumov), D. tritici (Gillette), D. mexicana (Baker), Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), and Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris). A 132-kDa protein band was detected from the saliva of all five species using sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Alkaline phosphatase activity was detected from the saliva of all five species and may have a universal role in the feeding process of aphids. The Diuraphis species cause similar visible injury to grass hosts, and nine electrophoretic bands were unique to the saliva of these three species. S. graminum shares mutual hosts with the Diuraphis species, but visible injury to hosts caused by S. graminum feeding differs from that of Diuraphis feeding. Only two mutual electrophoretic bands were visualized in the saliva of Diuraphis and S. graminum. Ten unique products were detected from the saliva of A. pisum, which feeds on dicotyledonous hosts. Our comparisons of aphid salivary proteins revealed similarities among species which cause similar injury on mutual hosts, fewer similarities among species that cause different injury on mutual hosts, and little similarity among species which feed on unrelated hosts. 相似文献

The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is a worldwide pest of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr. Studies to find control methods were initiated in 2000 when it was first detected in North America. A. glycines can reduce yields by as much as 50%, and it is the vector of several viral diseases. A. glycines removes phloem sap, which can result in a reduction of chlorophyll content. Quantification of chlorophyll loss caused by A. glycines feeding on soybean is of vital importance. The SPAD-502 chlorophyll meter is a device that has been used to measure chlorophyll loss caused by nonchewing insects. Chlorophyll loss was studied in no-choice tests on the infested and uninfested leaves of a susceptible check (KS4202). The minimum combined number of days and aphids needed to detect significant chlorophyll loss was 30 aphids confined for 10 d. In a similar experiment, seven resistant entries and two susceptible checks were evaluated. There was no significant chlorophyll reduction between infested and uninfested leaves of five of the resistant entries (K1621, K1639, Pioneer 95B97, Dowling, and Jackson). Percentage of loss of chlorophyll in the susceptible checks was approximately 40%; Jackson and Dowling had a significantly lower percentage loss (13 and 16%, respectively) compared with the susceptible checks. The percentages of chlorophyll loss of K1621, K1639, and Pioneer 95B97 were not statistically different from the percentage of loss of Jackson. 相似文献

Abstract The green peach aphid ( Myzus persicae ) is becoming resistant to many of the pesticides used in the tomato ( Lycopersicon esculentum ) industry. A potential alternative method of control is host-plant resistance, which may be mediated by trichomes. Resistance to the green peach aphid was assessed for six accessions of L. hirsutum, three of L. pennellii and a L. esculentum control. Mortality, entrapment and number of aphids unaffected by trichomes were recorded 24, 48 and 72 h after placement. Using multiple regression against counts of glandular and non-glandular trichomes, the role of foliar pubescence in resistance to the aphid was established. Lycopersicon pennellii possessed the highest level of resistance after 72 h and type IV trichome density accounted for 26.5% of variance in mortality ( P < 0.001). Low densities of type IV and high densities of type VII trichomes increased the number of aphids 'unaffected' by trichomes, a relationship accounting for 29% of variance ( P < 0.001). Information on which types of trichomes most strongly affect resistance to insect pests will aid future breeding and L. pennellii shows potential for use in breeding programs to increase levels of host-plant resistance in L. esculentum. 相似文献

Aphids (Homoptera: Aphididae) are sap-sucking insect pests that feed on several plants of agronomical importance. Entomopathogenic fungi are valuable tools for potential aphid control. As part of a selection process, laboratory bioassays were carried with five different concentrations of Aspergillus clavatus (Desmazières), Aspergillus flavus (Link) and Metarhizium anisopliae ((Metschnikoff) Sorokin) spores against the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris). Aspergillus isolates induced higher mortalities than M. anisopliae, which is a well-known entomopathogen in the literature. Lethal concentrations (LC50 and LC90) were 1.23 × 103 and 1.34 × 107 spores/ml for A. flavus, 4.95 × 102 and 5.65 × 107 spores/ml for A. clavatus, and 3.67 × 103 and 9.71 × 107 spores/ml for M. anisopliae 5 days after treatment. Mycelia development and sporulation on adult cadavers were observed 48 h after incubation. The intrinsic growth rate of A. pisum decreased with increased spore concentration for all fungal strains, suggesting an increase in pathogen fitness related to a consumption of host resources. In conclusion, Aspergillus species could be useful in aphid control as pest control agents despite their saprophytic lifestyle. This is also to our knowledge the first report of A. clavatus and A. flavus strains pathogenic to aphids. 相似文献

Worldwide, the developing industry of cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L.) grown in greenhouses is threatened by damage from sucking pests, especially aphids. Among these, the melon aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is the most serious. We tested the effect of two cucumber cultivars ('Royal' and'Storm') and three vermicompost concentrations (0 [control], 20, and 30%) in field soil on the development and fecundity rates of A. gossypii, by using a randomized complete block design with four replicates as a factorial experiment. The developmental times of nymphs reared on plants grown into the three vermicompost concentrations ranged from 5.5 (0%) to 8.7 (30%) d (on Storm) and from 4.3 (0%) to 7 (30%) d (on Royal). The developmental time of melon aphid's nymphs was greatest on plants grown in the culture medium with 30% vermicompost rate and least on plants reared in the soil without vermicompost. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r,,) of A. gossypii ranged from 0.204 d(-1) on plants grown in the soil amended with 30% vermicompost rate (on Storm seedlings) to 0.458 d(-1) on plants grown in the soil without vermicompost (on Royal seedlings). Accordingly, our findings confirm that a combination of a low level of vermicompost and a partially resistant cucumber cultivar might play an important role in managing this aphid on cucumbers in greenhouses. 相似文献

The English grain aphid, Sitobion avenae (F.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is an important pest insect of wheat, Triticum aestivum (L.), in China. Grain aphid biotypes are necessary to breed aphid-resistant wheat varieties; however, none have currently been identified. Here, we describe a method to identify grain aphid biotypes and survey the aphid biotype variation in the wheat growth area of China. Clones of S. avenae were collected from 11 locations in China and used to establish culture populations. These populations were then used to assess the resistance of 12 wheat varieties. Based on resistance responses, seven differential hosts were selected to identify the biotype of S. avenae: Amigo, 'Fengchan No. 3', Zhong 4 wumang, JP1, L1, 885479-2, and 'Xiaobaidongmai'. S. avenae was ultimately classified into five biotypes: EGA I, EGA II, EGA III, EGA IV, and EGA V. These methods provide a mechanism to detect the variation and evolution of grain aphids in different wheat-growing locations and also allow for selection of appropriate aphid-resistant germplasm for wheat breeding of commercial wheat cultivars. 相似文献

Effect of soil potassium availability on soybean aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae) population dynamics and soybean yield 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Studies were conducted to examine the effect of potassium (K) on soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, population growth. A laboratory feeding assay examined the effect of K-deficient foliage on life table parameters of soybean aphids, and field experiments were designed to determine the effect of three soil K treatment levels on aphid populations and their impact on soybean yields. The feeding assay found that life table parameters differed between aphids feeding on the K-deficient and nondeficient soybean leaves. Soybean aphids in the K-deficient treatment exhibited significantly greater intrinsic rate of increase (r(m)), finite rate of increase (lambda), and net reproductive rate (Ro) relative to aphids feeding on nondeficient leaves. No significant difference was observed in mean generation time (T) between the two treatments. However, the field experiment repeated over 2 yr showed no effect of K on soybean aphid populations. Soybean aphid populations were high in unsprayed plots and feeding resulted in significant yield losses in 2002 at all three K treatment levels: when averaged across 2001 and 2002, unsprayed treatments yielded 22, 18, and 19.5% less than the sprayed plots in the low, medium, and high K treatments, respectively. No significant interaction was observed between aphid abundance and K level on soybean yields in either year. This study therefore suggests that although aphids can perform better on K-deficient plants, aphid abundance in the field may be dependent on additional factors, such as dispersal, that may affect final densities within plots. 相似文献

Life history parameters of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum were studied at five constant temperatures on two cultivars of peas, Scout and Sancho. The development and mortality of juveniles and the life-span, age-specific fecundity and survivorship of adult aphids were recorded and used to construct life tables. The juvenile development period (from birth to adulthood) was longest at 11.9 degrees C (16.8 days on cv. Scout and 16.2 days on cv. Sancho) and shortest at 26.7 degrees C (8.5 days on cv. Scout and 8.8 days on cv. Sancho). At all temperatures, except 26.7 degrees C, juveniles developed faster on cv. Sancho than on cv. Scout. On both pea varieties juvenile mortality was highest at temperatures above 19.6 degrees C and lowest at 19.6 degrees C. Highest cumulative juvenile mortality was recorded on cv. Scout at 26.7 degrees C when only 9% of aphids survived from birth to reproductively mature adults. Fecundity rates were unaffected by temperature in the range tested on cv. Sancho but increased with increasing temperatures between 11.9 and 19.6 degrees C on cv. Scout. These differences in life history parameters were reflected in the population growth (rm) of aphids on both pea cultivars which increased with increasing temperatures between 11.9 and 23.1 degrees C on cv. Sancho and 11.9 and 19.6 degrees C on cv. Scout, declining thereafter. Population growth was consistently greater at all temperatures for aphids reared on cv. Sancho than those reared on cv. Scout. 相似文献

The cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae is one of the most important pests with broad host range that does damage to cruciferae plants. In this research, biology parameters of the cabbage aphid was studied on the eight cauliflower cultivars: Smilla, Snow mystique, White cloud, Buris, Galiblanka, Snow crown, SG and Tokita. This study was conducted under controlled conditions (25?±?2?°C, 65?±?5% RH and L-D: 16–8). Statistical analysis showed that there is significant difference between different stages of growth and mean number of laid nymphs period (p?<?0.05), so that the maximum and minimum growth period were observed on the cultivars Galyblanka and Buris, respectively. The longest mean longevity of total nymphal instars was obtained on White cloud, and the shortest on Smilla. The highest pre nymph period, nymph production period, mean number of laid nymphs, Adult longevity and total lifespan on the Galiblanka cultivar was calculated as 8.60, 13.50, 58.60, 17.30 and 25.90, respectively. The results showed that using cultivars that affected on the adult reproductive parameters and provides conditions for reduction of reproduction could be a good solution for the cabbage aphid control management. 相似文献

Summary Life history and behavioural characteristics of the bamboo aphid,Pseudoregma bambucicola (Takahashi), which has sterile soldiers, were studied in the laboratory. The stadium of normal (fertile) first instar larvae was two times longer than that of second instar larvae, and the stadium of soldier-type (sterile) first instar larvae was much longer (max. 116 days) than the stadium of normal first instar, suggesting that soldiers are able to take nutrition from bamboo. Stimulation of larvae with breath, vibration of bamboo shoots or disturbing the larvae with the tip of a fine brush induced significantly more defensive acts by soldiers than those by normal larvae — the latter usually fled. Soldiers did not attack non-kin conspecific intruders or even aphids of different species, suggesting that, in this species, kin-recognition ability is low. 相似文献
