After 2 days of water deprivation in a warm climate, Papio hamadryas baboons lost 10% of their body mass, 12.5% of their total body water (3H2O) space, but only 4% of their plasma volume [Evans blue (EB) space]. Hematocrit and hemoglobin concentration as well as blood viscosity and blood pressure were not affected by thermal dehydration. Plasma colloid osmotic pressure (COP) in the dehydrated animals was, however, 8 Torr higher than in fully hydrated baboons. Total mass and concentration of plasma albumin, and protein concentration increased after dehydration. Both half times (T 1/2) of EB and T 1/2 of 131I-serum albumin were twice as high as in the dehydrated animal than in the fully hydrated ones. Incorporation rate of L-[3H]leucine in the plasma proteins was similarly higher in the dehydrated animals. The capacity of the P. hamadryas baboon to maintain its plasma volume at the expense of losses from other body fluid compartments is related to an increase in the blood COP that is brought about by a more efficient retention of albumin and an increase in its rate of synthesis.  相似文献

The multiple-indicator dilution technique (MIDT) was used to study glomerular and postglomerular permselectivity to neutral dextran molecular weight markers in anesthetized dogs undergoing mannitol diuresis. Renal vein and urine outflow curves were obtained after an intraarterial pulse injection of 125I-labeled albumin (plasma reference), creatinine (extracellular reference), [14C]inulin, and chromatographically homogeneous 3H-labeled neutral dextrans. The urine recovery data reflect solute losses across the glomerulus. The renal vein outflow curves contain information about both glomerular and postglomerular extraction. For dextrans less than 13,500 daltons the urine transit pattern was superimposed on the glomerular markers creatinine and inulin. Relative to 125I-labeled albumin, the renal vein recoveries for creatinine, inulin, and dextrans (less than 13,500 daltons) were all equal. The renal vein mean transit time (tdextran) was greater than talbumin and less than tcreatinine. With increasing dextran size, tdextran progressively decreased. Eventually for dextrans greater than 15,500 daltons, tdextran became equal to talbumin in the renal vein, whereas urine recovery relative to inulin decreased with increasing size. Urine recovery of 3H-labeled dextran (ED) relative to inulin (Ei) provided a measure of unidirectional fractional glomerular extraction (ED/Ei). Constant infusion fractional clearance measurement of the same dextrans [U/P)D/(U/P)i) was found to equal ED/Ei obtained from the MIDT. Within the autoregulatory range of glomerular filtration, ED/Ei was invariant with reduction in renal plasma flow. Therefore, under the experimental conditions employed in the present study, diffusion across the glomerulus was negligible relative to convection. This permitted estimation of the reflection coefficients for the series of neutral dextrans. Postglomerular extraction was markedly flow dependent, which implies a major diffusion limitation. Application of a barrier-limited distributed model permitted quantitation of postglomerular capillary permeability coefficients for neutral markers of less than 5000 daltons.  相似文献

To determine the permselectivity characteristics of the glomerular capillary wall, known molecular size fractions of [3H]dextran, prepared by gel chromatography, were infused into normally hydrated Wistar rats, thus permitting simultaneous measurement of Bowman's space/plasma water (BS/P) and urine/plasma water (U/P) concentration ratios, along with glomerular pressures and flows. Since (BS/P)inulin = 1.01 +/- 0.01 SE(n = 34, radius = approximately 14 A) and since (BS/P)dextran/(BS/P)inulin equaled (U/P)dextran/(U/P)inulin for dextrans ranging in molecular radius from 21 to 35 A, these findings validate that dextrans are neither secreted nor reabsorbed. For dextran radii of 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, and 44 A, (U/P)dextran/(U/P)inulin averaged 0.99, 0.92, 0.69, 0.42, 0.19, 0.06, and 0.01, respectively. In accord with theoretical predictions that these fractional dextran clearances should vary appreciably with changes in glomerular transcapillary pressures and flows, an increase in glomerular plasma flow rate, induced in these same rats by plasma volume expansion, resulted in a highly significant lowering of fractional clearance of all but the smallest and largest dextrans studied. These findings emphasize that fractional solute clearances alone are inadequate to describe the permselective properties of the glomerular capillary wall unless glomerular pressures and flows are also known. This sensitivity of fractional dextran clearance to changes in plasma flow indicates that dextrans are transported across the capillary not only by bulk flow but also to an important extent by diffusion.  相似文献

In a mixed-sex, captive group of hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas hamadryas) we investigated whether female grooming relationships are affected by their dominance ranks. Seyfarth's [1977] grooming for support model and Barrett et al.'s [1999] biological market model both predict that in primate groups where competition for monopolizable resources is high, grooming among females is based, at least partly, on the interchange of grooming for rank-related benefits, and that rank thus influences the distribution of grooming in females. Contrary to this prediction, our results show that despite the existence of a linear dominance hierarchy, rather strict dominance relationships, and high food-related aggression rates, grooming among female hamadryas baboons is not affected by rank and is only exchanged for itself. This is understandable since rank differences in our study group only result in differential access to limited, preferred food items that are not actively shared. Although some females are more likely to tolerate one another at the food pile, this tolerance is not determined by their grooming efforts and interchange of grooming for rank-related benefits does not occur. We conclude that female hamadryas baboons groom others in order to be groomed by them, which is supported by our observation that grooming reciprocity within a dyad increases when more grooming occurs in this dyad. Our results indicate that grooming is indeed a valuable commodity in itself, probably because of its stress- and tension-reducing effect. Based on our findings, the existing groom trade model is extended to include circumstances in which monopolizable resources are available but are not traded for grooming.  相似文献

The hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas hamadryas) is found both in East Africa and western Arabia and is the only free-ranging nonhuman primate in Arabia. It has been hypothesized that hamadryas baboons colonized Arabia in the recent past and were possibly even transported there by humans. We investigated the phylogeography of hamadryas baboons by sequencing a portion of the control region of mtDNA in 107 baboons from four Saudi Arabian populations and combing these data with published data from Eritrean (African) P. h. hamadryas. Analysis grouped sequences into three distinct clades, with clade 1 found only in Arabia, clade 3 found only in Africa, but clade 2 found in both Arabian and African P. h. hamadryas and also in the olive baboon, P. h. anubis. Patterns of variation within Arabia are neither compatible with the recent colonization of Arabia, implying that baboons were not transported there by humans, nor with a northerly route of colonization of Arabia. We propose that hamadryas baboons reached Arabia via land bridges that have formed periodically during glacial maxima at the straits of Bab el Mandab in the southern Red Sea. We suggest that the genetic differentiation of Arabian from African populations suggests that Arabian populations have a higher conservation status than recognized previously.  相似文献

Passage of uncharged dextrans from blood to lung lymph in awake sheep   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
To examine how molecular size alone influences the passage of macromolecules from the pulmonary microcirculation into lymph collected from the caudal mediastinal lymph node of the sheep, we infused polydisperse uncharged [3H]dextrans intravenously at a constant rate over a period of 7.5 h in nine awake sheep with lung lymph fistulas. Lymph and plasma were collected during hours 5.5-7.5 of the infusions, and the [3H]dextrans were separated by molecular sieve chromatography into fractions that ranged from 1.6 to 8.4 nm in effective molecular (Stokes-Einstein) radius. Lymph-to-plasma (L/P) ratios for [3H]dextrans were near 1.0 at 1.6-nm radius, decreased with increasing molecular size, and approached zero at radii above 5.0 nm. We confirmed that these L/P ratios represented steady-state values by extending the duration of the infusion to approximately 30 h in two of the nine sheep and finding that the L/P ratios remained unchanged. These results were consistent with molecular sieving through a homoporous membrane with cylindrical pores of 5.0-nm radius. We also found that the L/P ratio for albumin [0.76 +/- 0.13 (SE)] in five of the same sheep was much higher than that for the [3H]dextran fraction of the same effective molecular radius [0.11 +/- 0.02 (SE)]. These results suggest that the movement of macromolecules from the pulmonary microcirculation into pulmonary lymph collected from the caudal mediastinal node of the sheep is influenced by both molecular size and molecular charge and that, compared with uncharged dextrans, the steady-state passage of anionic endogenous proteins from plasma to lymph is enhanced.  相似文献

At least three diurnal primate taxa are still present in Eritrea, NE Africa: hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas hamadryas), olive baboons (Papio h. anubis) and grivet monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops aethiops). However, information on status and distribution of primates and their habitats in Eritrea is outdated and incomplete. We conducted a primate survey, focussing on hamadryas baboons, to obtain data which will be integrated in a national wildlife management and conservation plan in Eritrea. We obtained information about the geographical distribution and abundance of baboons, their altitudinal range, habitat quality of their home-ranges, aggregation sizes at sleeping cliffs and predator presence. We described habitat quality via the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), a vegetation classification of Landsat MSS satellite data. Hamadryas and olive baboons are still present in Eritrea in ample numbers. Their geographical distributions in 1997 and 1998 did not deviate significantly from their historical distributions. An estimated 15,000 Papio hamadryas hamadryas lived in the 25,000-km2 area of survey (0.58 baboons/km2). Population densities of hamadryas baboons in many parts of the survey area are higher than at Kummer's (1968) study site in Ethiopia. Hamadryas baboons live at all altitudes in four of five ecogeographical zones of Eritrea. Olive baboons replaced them in the western lowlands. Both baboon taxa tend to select better quality habitats, characterized by a higher normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) than the average for the respective ecogeographical zones. Hamadryas baboons show a greater ecological plasticity than olive baboons, which are confined to riverbeds with extended gallery forest. By the end of 1999, a hybrid zone could not be confirmed.  相似文献

Abstract Baboons regularly drink surface waters derived from atmospheric precipitation, or meteoric water. As a result, the oxygen isotope (δ(18)O) composition of their tissues is expected to reflect that of local meteoric waters. Animal proxies of the oxygen isotope composition of meteoric water have practical applications as paleoenvironmental recorders because they can be used to infer aridity and temperature in historic and fossil systems. To explore this premise, we measured the δ(18)O values of hair from two baboon species, Papio anubis and Papio hamadryas, inhabiting Awash National Park, Ethiopia. The hybridizing taxa differ in their ranging behavior and physiological response to heat. Papio hamadryas ranges more widely in the arid thornbush and is inferred to ingest a greater proportion of leaf water that is enriched in (18)O as a result of evaporative fractionation. It is also better able to conserve body water, which reduces its dependence on meteoric waters depleted in (18)O. Taken together, these factors would predict relatively higher δ(18)O values in the hair (δ(18)O(hair)) of P. hamadryas. We found that the δ(18)O(hair) values of P. hamadryas were higher than those of P. anubis, yet the magnitude of the difference was marginal. We attribute this result to a common source of drinking water, the Awash River, and the longer drinking bouts of P. hamadryas. Our findings suggest that differences in δ(18)O values among populations of Papio (modern or ancient) reflect different sources of drinking water (which might have ecological significance) and, further, that Papio has practical value as a paleoenvironmental recorder.  相似文献

Understanding the extent of human–primate conflict is crucial to the development of conservation and management strategies. We carried out this study in an unprotected area of central Ethiopia to examine the magnitude of human–hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas) conflict and to assess the attitude of local farmers towards baboons in Wonchit Valley. In 2014, we interviewed 119 adult respondents using a structured questionnaire. Local farmers considered hamadryas baboons to be the major pest in the area. All respondents reported that hamadryas baboons caused crop raiding and small livestock predation in the region. Respondents reported that a shortage of fruit producing wild trees and ready availability of crops were the main causes of conflict between farmers and hamadryas baboons. We found that hamadryas baboons damaged cereal crops at dusk and dawn during full moonlight, and most (89.9%) respondents claimed that they were not interested in hamadryas baboon conservation. Our results indicate that human–hamadryas baboon conflict has a strongly negative impact on both baboon conservation and local farmers. We suggest that to mitigate the human–hamadryas baboon conflict, job opportunities such as beekeeping should be introduced in the region.  相似文献

Schistosomula of Schistosoma mansoni develop the ability to ingest and digest red blood cells after the fourth day post-transformation. Here, we have used fluorescently-labeled dextrans and two plasma proteins, albumin and IgG, to test whether day-old schistosomula can ingest and process macromolecules prior to the time that they eat red cells. Worms ingested dextrans of molecular weights 4,000, 70,000 and 2 x 10(6) in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. The dextran remained in the cecal lumen for up to 2 days after feeding. Parasites ingested both fluorescein-conjugated bovine serum albumin and rabbit IgG, but neither of these proteins remained confined to the cecum over time. Instead, fluorescence redistributed to the acetabular glands within a few hours. Thin-layer chromatography indicated that schistosomula degraded fluorescein-conjugated albumin to fluorescein-conjugated peptides approximately 10-15 amino acids long. The volume of the cecum was estimated to be 2431 microns 3 and the surface area 299 microns 2. These results demonstrate that larval schistosomes can ingest both proteins and complex carbohydrates shortly after transformation, before they can ingest red cells. Further, the gut apparently releases proteases that cleave plasma proteins, but not saccharidases that cleave dextran.  相似文献

Here we address the assumption that the massive intact albuminuria accompanying mutations of structural components of the slit diaphragm is due to changes in glomerular permeability. The increase in intact albumin excretion rate in Cd2ap knockout mice by >100-fold was not accompanied by equivalent changes in urine flow rate, glomerular filtration rate or increases in dextran plasma clearance rate, which demonstrates that changes in glomerular permeability alone could not account for the increase in intact albumin excretion. The albuminuria could be accounted for by inhibition of the tubule degradation pathway associated with degrading filtered albumin. There are remarkable similarities between these results and all types of podocytopathies in acquired and toxin-induced renal disease, and nephrotic states seen in mice with podocyte mutations.  相似文献

The removal of plasma proteins from a vascular perfusate results in increased labeling of the endothelial cell (EC) vesicles and increased permeability of the capillary wall to water and solutes. The hypothesis that albumin forms part of a molecular filter composed of a network of fibrous molecules is evaluated. The fibrous network covers the EC surface and penetrates the intercellular junctions. Albumin may simply occupy space within the matrix to increase the resistance to water flow and increase exclusion and restriction to diffusion of solutes. Electrostatic interactions between positively charged sites on albumin and negatively charged fibers may also order the fibrous network into a more selective array. In the presence of albumin, the fibrous network would determine the selectivity of the capillary wall. An alternative hypothesis, that a selective pathway is formed when albumin is adsorbed to the walls of the wide portion of the slit, is inconsistent with the area required for the diffusion of small solutes between the endothelial cells. However, the geometry of intercellular channels may partially determine the selectivity of the capillary wall when the fiber matrix containing albumin is disrupted.  相似文献

Simian T-cell leukemia viruses (STLVs) are the simian counterparts of human T-cell leukemia viruses (HTLVs). A novel, divergent type of STLV (STLV-L) from captive baboons was reported in 1994, but its natural prevalence remained unclear. We investigated the prevalence of STLV-L in 519 blood samples from wild-living nonhuman primates in Ethiopia. Seropositive monkeys having cross-reactive antibodies against HTLV were found among 22 out of 40 hamadryas baboons, 8 of 96 anubis baboons, 24 of 50 baboons that are hybrids between hamadryas and anubis baboons, and 41 of 177 grivet monkeys, but not in 156 gelada baboons. A Western blotting assay showed that sera obtained from seropositive hamadryas and hybrid baboons exhibited STLV-L-like reactivity. A PCR assay successfully amplified STLV sequences, which were subsequently sequenced and confirmed as being closely related to STLV-L. Surprisingly, further PCR showed that nearly half of the hamadryas (20 out of 40) and hybrid (19 out of 50) baboons had STLV-L DNA sequences. In contrast, most of the seropositive anubis baboons and grivet monkeys carried typical STLV-1 but not STLV-L. These observations demonstrate that STLV-L naturally prevails among hamadryas and hybrid baboons at significantly high rates. STLV-1 and -2, the close relative of STLV-L, are believed to have jumped across simian-human barriers, which resulted in widespread infection of HTLV-1 and -2. Further studies are required to know if STLV-L is spreading into human populations.  相似文献

We report body mass and testicular size in 258 anubis (Papio anubis or P. hamadryas anubis) and 59 hamadryas (P. hamadryas or P. h. hamadryas) baboons, live-trapped in Ethiopia. As predicted by theories of sexual selection by sperm competition, among hamadryas baboons, which are monandrous, fully adult males have absolutely and relatively smaller testes than those of comparable males among anubis baboons, which are polyandrous. Male hamadryas are also ca. 10% smaller in bodily mass as adults. The intertaxonal difference in adults is due entirely to the fact that in male anubis baboons, testicular and bodily mass continue to grow up to full adulthood–the age at which most males emigrate from their natal troop and initiate a confrontational breeding strategy among unrelated animals. By contrast, male hamadryas baboons, which are usually philopatric, attain adult body mass and testicular size as subadults. In both species, juveniles experience rapid testicular growth peaking in rate at ca. 12kg body mass, but testicular descent and growth starts earlier in hamadryas than in anubis baboons. Juvenile hamadryas baboons have relatively larger testes than their anubis equivalents, perhaps because male philopatry allows the mating strategy of male hamadryas baboons to be initiated during juvenile life and therefore permits some sperm competition between juveniles and adults.  相似文献

During a survey of the geographical distribution and abundance of hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas hamadryas) in central Eritrea, we collected detailed demographic data on six bands at four sites in different ecogeographical zones. The proportions of age-sex classes within the six bands differed only with respect to juveniles. The general social organization of the Eritrean hamadryas baboons is similar to that reported for Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia. Eritrean hamadryas baboons live in a nested fission-fusion system, with one-male units as the basic social entity. Although the baboons were not provisioned, as they are in many places in Saudi Arabia, and habitat quality in Eritrea is lower than that in Ethiopia, sex-ratios and group composition corresponded more to those found in the Saudi Arabian population. Sex-ratios within the study population, in bands and also in one-male units were significantly more female-biased than in Ethiopian ones, and one-male units tended to be larger. Data from Eritrea suggest that these differences are due to a combination of a heavily fluctuating rainfall pattern and differential maturation of the sexes.  相似文献

Bloodsmears from 119 yellow baboons (Papio hamadryas cynocephalus) in six groups in Mikumi National Park, Tanzania, and from 189 olive (P.h. anubis) hamadryas (P.h. hamadryas) and hybrid baboons in three groups in Awash National park, Ethiopia showed differing levels of infection with Hepatocystis simiae. 0% to 42% in the Tanzanian groups were carriers of the parasite but none of the Ethiopian baboons was positive. The remarkable absence of H. simiae in the Ethiopian baboons is believed to be related to environmental factors that exclude transmission in the absence of the Culicoides vector.  相似文献

The glomerular capillary endothelium is highly specialized to support the selective filtration of massive volumes of plasma. Filtration is driven by Starling forces acting across the glomerular capillary wall, and depends on its large surface area and extremely high water permeability. Glomerular endothelial cells are extremely flat and perforated by dense arrays of trans-cellular pores, the fenestrae. This phenotype is critical for the high glomerular water permeability and depends on podocyte-derived VEGF, as well as TGF-beta. Endothelial cell-derived PDGFB, in turn, is necessary for the establishment of mesangial cells, which sculpt the glomerular loop structure that underlies the large filtration surface area. In pre-eclampsia, inhibition of the VEGF- and TGF-beta signaling pathways leads to endothelial swelling and loss of fenestrae, reducing the glomerular filtration rate. Similarly, in the thrombotic microangiopathies, glomerular endothelial cell injury coupled with inappropriate VWF activation leads to intracapillary platelet aggregation and loss of the flat, fenestrated phenotype, thus reducing the glomerular filtration rate. Normally, a remarkably small fraction of albumin and other large plasma proteins passes across the glomerular capillary wall despite the massive filtration of water and small solutes. An elaborate glycocalyx, which covers glomerular endothelial cells and their fenestrae forms an impressive barrier that, together with other components of the glomerular capillary wall, prevents loss of plasma proteins into the urine. Indeed, microalbuminuria is a marker for endothelial glycocalyx disruption, and most forms of glomerular endothelial cell injury including pre-eclampsia and thrombotic microangiopaties can cause proteinuria.  相似文献

Amino acid sequences of fibrinopeptides A and B from savanna baboons, Papio anubis and Papio hamadryas, and highland baboon, Theropithecus gelada, were established. The sequences of the fibrinopeptides A from the three baboons were identical: (sequence: see text) The fibrinopeptides B were composed of 9 residues and demonstrated the sequence: (sequence see text) where X3 = Arg in P. anubis, His in P. hamadryas, and Gly in Th. gelada. Position-3 of the B peptides was the only replacement site observed among the 25 amino acid residues in both fibrinopeptides from the baboons. Based on these sequences, a molecular phylogeny for the three species of baboons was deduced. The evolutionary rates of the peptides B of the baboons and macaques were also estimated. It was observed that the fibrinopeptides changed at an uneven rate during the evolution of old-world monkeys, i.e., baboons and macaques.  相似文献

Objective: Assess whether changes in permeability of the muscle regional microcirculation occur in the obese Zucker rat model. Research Methods and Procedures: Capillary permeability to albumin was assessed in vivo in Zucker rats (n = 15) and lean controls (n = 15) by quantifying the extravasation of albumin‐bound Evans Blue (EB) in different organs. Unanaesthetized animals were injected with EB 20 mg/kg in the caudal vein, and EB was extracted by formamide from selected organs collected after exsanguination. Results: Relative to control animals, Zucker rats had higher body weight (Δ = +33%; p < 0.001), plasma triglycerides (Δ = +244%; p < 0.001), and insulin (Δ = +240%; p < 0.001) concentrations. Plasma glucose concentrations were not different between the two groups (p = not significant). Using the EB technique, we showed a 30% to 50% (p < 0.01) increase in the extravasation of EB in the obese rats, regardless of the skeletal muscle group studied. This increase in skeletal muscle vasopermeability was not paralleled by any increase in the expression of the muscle endothelium—nitric oxide (NO) system because the total NO synthase (NOS) activity in skeletal muscle of the obese Zucker rat was significantly lower (p < 0.001), as was the endothelial NOS immunoreactive mass (p < 0.001), compared with lean controls. Discussion: In conclusion, there seems to be dissociation between capillary permeability and local regulation of microcirculation in skeletal muscles of the obese Zucker rat. It is suggested that the increase in skeletal muscle vasopermeability (extravasation of macromolecules) is a compensation for the loss of NO‐dependent vasodilation and capillary recruitment noted in this model of obesity and insulin resistance.  相似文献

The immunogenic properties of the freeze-dried preparation of fraction I tisolated from the culture of avirulent Pasteurella pestis strain were studied in experiments on hamadryas baboons, guinea-pigs and white mice. The preparation was found to have a pronounced protective effect in hamadryas baboons and white mice, especially when the preparation was used in mixture with incomplete Freund adjuvant. In hamadryas baboons resistance to infection was shown to correlate with hemagglutionation antibody titres.  相似文献
