This article focuses on the transformation of the female reproductive body with the use of assisted reproduction technologies under neo-liberal economic globalisation, wherein the ideology of trade without borders is central, as well as under liberal feminist ideals, wherein the right to self-determination is central. Two aspects of the body in western medicine—the fragmented body and the commodified body, and the integral relation between these two—are highlighted. This is done in order to analyse the implications of local and global transactions in women’s reproductive body parts for their right to self-determination and individual agency and what this means for their embodiment. We conclude by exploring whether women can become embodied subjects by exercising their proprietary right to their bodies through directing technology to achieve their own goals, while at the same time being fragmented into parts and losing their personhood and bodily integrity. In today's complex global supply chains, time and data intensive analyses are required to understand global flows of mineral commodities from mine to consumer, particularly for mineral commodities in products (electronics, automobiles, etc.) that contain multiple parts with many mineral commodities. National and regional analyses require additional time and data to incorporate international trade flows. However, data limitations and time constraints often prohibit global and national material flow analyses for minor metals. Here we present a methodological approach to circumvent these constraints by utilizing readily available industry-level global data from the United Nations Statistics Division and national industrial data to estimate total requirements for a mineral commodity. We apply this approach to lithium and cobalt use in the United States for the year 2018 and distinguish between apparent raw material consumption versus inferred embedded consumption of lithium and cobalt materials in all forms. The results show that more than half of the United States’ total requirements for both lithium and cobalt is in parts and products that were manufactured outside the United States. In large part, this is due to limited US manufacturing capability for lithium-ion battery materials and cells and the United States’ high import reliance for electronics that use those batteries.  相似文献

Most naked basal bodies visualized in protargol stains on the surface of Tetrahymena are new basal bodies which have not yet developed cilia. The rarity of short cilia is explained by the rapid development of the ciliary shaft once it begins to grow. The high frequency of naked basal bodies (about 50 percent) in log cultures indicates that the interval between assembly of the basal body and the initiation of the cilium is long, approximately a full cell cycle. Naked basal bodies are more frequent in the mid and posterior parts of the cell and two or more naked basal bodies may be associated with one ciliated basal body in these regions. Daughter cells produced at division are apparently asymmetric with respect to their endowment of new and old organelles.  相似文献

As part of a surge in technologies with so-called ‘artificial emotional intelligence’, robotics engineers and Buddhist monks in Japan have developed an android bodhisattva to deliver teachings at a popular Zen temple. Like many recent robots in Japan, the android is designed to impact visitors’ feelings. For this reason, it can be called a ‘technology of affect’. In order to communicate how new affective technologies are facilitating intimacy in human-machine relations in Japan, we employ the concept of ‘disassembling’. By conceptually disassembling technologies of affect and placing them in performative contexts, we show how technologies of affect also disassemble established associations between artificial agents and the feelings they evoke in popular imaginaries. We argue that identifying these disassembling processes helps demonstrate how emerging AI technologies can engender social change at the level of affect through evocative depictions of machine emotion.  相似文献

Over the last decade, the search for gene variants with the potential to influence transplant outcomes or predispose individuals to host–recipient-related phenotypes has generated a considerable number of studies with conflicting results. Thousands of genotypes have been associated with complex traits related to transplant medicine, including acute rejection, immunosuppressive drug metabolism and side effects, infections, long-term outcomes, and cardiovascular complications. However, these efforts have given disappointing results, both in terms of gaining understanding of the biological basis of disease and in patient management. The methodological weaknesses that constitute the major limitations of most of these studies have been discussed widely. A new generation of approaches is needed to understand the relationship between gene variants and complex kidney transplantation traits. These approaches should be global, to generate original pathophysiological hypotheses, and should rely on advanced genomic tools, including Genome Wide Association studies and Whole Genome Sequencing technologies. Such enterprises will only be successful with the creation of international consortiums that connect partners in clinical, industrial, and academic transplant medicine.  相似文献

Even if an animal matches its surroundings perfectly in colour and texture, any mismatch between the spatial phase of its pattern and that of the background, or shadow created by its three-dimensional relief, is potentially revealing. Nevertheless, for camouflage to be fully broken, the shape must be recognizable. Disruptive coloration acts against object recognition by the use of high-contrast internal colour boundaries to break up shape and form. As well as the general outline, characteristic features such as eyes and limbs must also be concealed; this can be achieved by having the colour patterns on different, but adjacent, body parts aligned to match each other (i.e. in phase). Such 'coincident disruptive coloration' ensures that there is no phase disjunction where body parts meet, and causes different sections of the body to blend perceptually. We tested this theory using field experiments with predation by wild birds on artificial moth-like targets, whose wings and (edible pastry) bodies had colour patterns that were variously coincident or not. We also carried out an experiment with humans searching for analogous targets on a computer screen. Both experiments show that coincident disruptive coloration is an effective mechanism for concealing an otherwise revealing body form.  相似文献

Abstract One main difference between basal bodies and centrioles resides in the expression of their polarity: centrioles display a structural nine‐fold radial symmetry, whereas basal bodies express a circumferential polarity, thanks to their asymmetric set of rootlets. The origin of this polarity during organelle duplication still remains under debate: is it intrinsic to the nine‐fold structure itself (i.e. the nine microtubular triplets are not equivalent) or imposed by its immediate environment at time of assembly? We have reinvestigated this problem using the Ciliate Paramecium, in which the pattern of basal body duplication is well known. In this cell, all basal bodies produced within ciliary rows appear immediately anterior to parental ones. Observations on cells fixed with the tannic acid protocol suggest that, to be competent for basal body assembly, parental basal bodies have to be individually associated with a complete set of rootlets (monokinetid structure). During pro‐basal body assembly, full microtubular triplets were detected according to a random circumferential sequence; during the whole process, the new basal body and its associated rootlets maintained structural relations with the parental monokinetid structure by way of specific links. These results strongly suggest that basal body and associated rootlets (kinetid) polarity is driven by its immediate environment and provide a basis for the structural heredity property observed by Sonneborn some decades ago.  相似文献

In this paper I will explore both the regulation of migrant bodies as well as the lived experience of migrant embodiment in order to develop an analysis of the body as a vortex of meaning in the displacement process. By examining the way in which the bodies of Vietnamese migrants are simultaneously object and agent, I will indicate how the relations between migrants and the wider society are felt and sensed through the bodily experiences of Vietnamese people. The dynamic between how Vietnamese bodies are represented and how they are experienced reveals the body to be a predominant marker of difference from both within and without, the mediator between experience and signification. I will indicate how the dominant media construction of Vietnamese bodies as defiled has sustained forms of exclusion and distancing which have influenced the way that Vietnamese bodies are lived. I thus explore the means through which the body has particular salience when attempting to understand the nature of migrant identities in Australia.  相似文献

To investigate the accumulation patterns of Cd and/or Pb in various body parts, organs and tissues of the Asian gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) larvae under Cd and/or Pb stress, Cd and Pb treated artificial diets were used to feed the larvae in the current study. These larval body parts/organs/tissues included the heads, integuments (body walls), alimentary canals, fat bodies and hemolymphs. Our results showed that under Cd and/or Pb stress, their accumulations in larval body parts/organs/tissues were significantly higher than those in the control, with the amounts of tested metals in the fat bodies and hemolymphs and alimentary canals being significantly higher than those in the heads and integuments. Under the single Cd (0, 7.5, 10.5 mg/kg) or Pb stress (0, 55, 90, 125 mg/kg), the accumulations of these heavy metals were positively correlated with their concentrations in diets. Under the combined stress (Cd × Pb), the Cd accumulation at the lower Pb concentrations was higher than that at higher Pb concentrations for the body parts/organs/tissues, similar effects of Cd concentrations on Pb accumulations were also recorded. These results clearly showed that Cd and/or Pb were accumulated in various body parts/organs/tissues at different levels under the heavy metal stress. And accumulations of Pb/Cd were positively correlated with their concentrations in the diets under the single stress. Under the combined stresses, Cd and Pb had synergistic effects at low concentrations whereas antagonistic effects at high concentrations. The accumulations of Cd and/or Pb in the gypsy moth larvae affects normal physiological and biochemical functions, and thus affects their growth and development.  相似文献

The temperature of different parts of bee bodies related to external air temperature and localization of bees in the colony was determined using the thermal imaging method. A feedback between external air temperature and heating of bee bodies was revealed. Recent human population increase has been enabled by a massive expansion of global agricultural production. A key component of this “Green Revolution” has been application of inorganic fertilizers to produce and maintain high crop yields. However, the long-term sustainability of these practices is unclear given the eutrophying effects of fertilizer runoff as well as the reliance of fertilizer production on finite non-renewable resources such as mined phosphate- and potassium-bearing rocks. Indeed, recent volatility in food and agricultural commodity prices, especially phosphate fertilizer, has raised concerns about emerging constraints on fertilizer production with consequences for its affordability in the developing world. We examined 30 years of monthly prices of fertilizer commodities (phosphate rock, urea, and potassium) for comparison with three food commodities (maize, wheat, and rice) and three non-agricultural commodities (gold, nickel, and petroleum). Here we show that all commodity prices, except gold, had significant change points between 2007–2009, but the fertilizer commodities, and especially phosphate rock, showed multiple symptoms of nonlinear critical transitions. In contrast to fertilizers and to rice, maize and wheat prices did not show significant signs of nonlinear dynamics. From these results we infer a recent emergence of a scarcity price in global fertilizer markets, a result signaling a new high price regime for these essential agricultural inputs. Such a regime will challenge on-going efforts to establish global food security but may also prompt fertilizer use practices and nutrient recovery strategies that reduce eutrophication.  相似文献

Following the phrase ‘getting to know your data self’, my aim is to draw out the kinds of relations people use data to make, and the versions of the body that I find codified in data imaginaries. An in vitro system was established to examine the targeting of proteins to maturing seed oil bodies. Oleosin, the most abundant structural protein, and caleosin, a newly identified minor constituent in seed oil bodies, were translated in a reticulocyte lysate system and simultaneously incubated with artificial oil emulsions composed of triacylglycerol and phospholipid. The results suggest that oil body proteins could spontaneously target to artificial oil emulsions in a co-translational mode. Incorporation of oleosin to artificial oil emulsions extensively protected a fragment of approximately 8 kDa from proteinase K digestion. In a competition experiment, in vitro translated caleosin and oleosin preferentially target to artificial oil emulsions instead of microsomal membranes. In oil emulsions with neutral phospholipids, relatively low protein targeting efficiency was observed. The targeting efficiency was substantially elevated when negatively charged phospholipids were supplemented to oil emulsions to mimic the native phospholipid composition of oil bodies. Mutated caleosin lacking various structural domains or subdomains was examined for its in vitro targeting efficiency. The results indicate that the subdomain comprising the proline knot motif is crucial for caleosin targeting to oil bodies. A model of direct targeting of oil-body proteins to maturing oil bodies is proposed.  相似文献

【背景】工厂化栽培中,杏鲍菇是不定点出菇,通常采用人工疏蕾的方法来实现对子实体数目的控制,但目前关于人工疏蕾保留子实体的数目无具体的研究。【目的】通过人工疏蕾的方式,研究保留不同子实体数目对杏鲍菇产量及品质的影响。【方法】对各处理组进行基质利用情况测定,对采收后各组子实体进行产量、形态指标及质构特性的测定。【结果】保留3—4个子实体的基质利用率较高,在生产实际中对成本的浪费较少;保留不同子实体数目对子实体形态指标、单菇重量及单包产量都有显著影响,保留1个子实体时,单菇重量最大但单包产量最低,保留4个子实体时,单包产量较高且子实体形态一致;从质构特性来看,保留子实体数目为4个时,杏鲍菇子实体品质最好、口感最佳。【结论】在杏鲍菇工厂化生产的人工疏蕾环节,保留子实体数目为3—4个时可以减少对成本的浪费,获得产量较高、品质较好的产品。  相似文献

Many of the synthetic biological devices, pathways and systems that can be engineered are multi-use, in the sense that they could be used both for commercially-important applications and to help meet global health needs. The on-going development of models and simulation tools for assembling component parts into functionally-complex devices and systems will enable successful engineering with much less trial-and-error experimentation and laboratory infrastructure. As illustrations, I draw upon recent examples from my own work and the broader Keasling research group at the University of California Berkeley and the Joint BioEnergy Institute, of which I was formerly a part. By combining multi-use synthetic biology research agendas with advanced computer-aided design tool creation, it may be possible to more rapidly engineer safe and effective synthetic biology technologies that help address a wide range of global health problems.  相似文献

Different parameters that influenced the formation of inclusion bodies in Escherichia coli during production of a fused protein consisting of protein A from Staphylococcus aureus and beta-galactosidase from E. coli were examined. The intracellular expression of the fused protein was controlled by the pR promoter and its temperature-sensitive repressor. The induction temperature, the pH of the cultivation medium, and changes in the amino acid sequence in the linker region between protein A and beta-galactosidase had a profound effect on the formation of inclusion bodies. At 42 degrees C, inclusion bodies were formed only during the first hours after induction, and thereafter all the recombinant protein that was further produced appeared in a soluble and active state. Production at 39 and 44 degrees C resulted in inclusion body formation throughout the production period with 15 to 20% of the produced recombinant protein appearing as inclusion bodies. Cultivating cells without control of pH caused inclusion body formation throughout the induction period, and inclusion body formation increased with decreasing pH, and at least part of the insoluble protein was formed from the pool of soluble fusion protein within the cell. Changes in the amino acid sequence in the linker region between the two parts of the fusion protein abolished inclusion body formation.  相似文献

Analysis of the time course of highly cationic ferritin uptake by fat body cells has shown that the tracer bound to the plasma membrane and was pinocytosed by coated vesicles. The first sites of intracellular accumulation were multivesicular bodies which became filled with ferritin between 30-60 min after cells were exposed to the tracer. At no time during the experiments were any parts of the Golgi complex labeled by the tracer. By 60 min, the ferritin was increasingly found in lamellar bodies. The different types of 'light' and 'dark' multivesicular bodies suggest that lamellar bodies form from multivesicular bodies as they fill with tracer. The occurrence of lamellar bodies in many different cell types suggests an important role in membrane dynamics.  相似文献

This paper outlines the current common law principles that protect people’s interests in their bodies, excised body parts and tissue without conferring the rights of full legal ownership. It does not include the recent statutory amendments in jurisdictions such as New South Wales and the United Kingdom. It argues that at common law, people do not own their own bodies or excised bodily material. People can authorise the removal of their bodily material and its use, either during life or after their death, for medical or scientific purposes. Researchers who acquire human bodies, body parts or tissue pursuant to such an authority have a right to possess and use them according to the authorisation they have been given, but their rights fall short of full ownership because they are limited in the way that they can use the material. The legal rights of researchers who develop intellectual property and biological products from excised human tissue can be adequately protected by existing common law principles without the need for a new legal principle that people own body parts and tissue removed from their bodies.
