In ultra-oligotrophic lakes and the sea, calanoid copepods arethe dominant mesozoo-plankton and cladocerans are generallysparse or absent. To determine the effects of predation andnutrient enrichment on the pelagic microbial food web of anultra-oligotrophic lake, we added copepods and cladocerans atlow biomasses (<60 µg l–1 to in situ enclosuresin Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand, in the presence and absence ofadded nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus). In response to nutrientfertilization, the concentrations of phototrophs >3 µmand heterotrophic bacteria increased by 50 and 15%, respectively, over 4 days, but those of cyanobacterial picoplankton decreasedby 68%. The presence of calanoid copepods (Boeckella dilatata)at ambient densities (1 and 4 l–1) rapidly and severelysuppressed ciliate population growth over 4 days and also loweredthat of flagellates >3 µm, even when microbial growthwas enhanced by added nutrients. The presence of a small cladoceran,Ceriodaphnia dubia, at double the densities, but similar biomasses,to those of copepods, depressed the net growth rates of ciliatesand flagellates to a lesser degree. The net growth rate of heterotrophicbacteria after 4 days declined with flagellate abundance, consistentwith the possibility of regulation by flagellates. Althoughbacteria and algae increased in response to nutrient fertilization(bottom-up control), predation (top-down control) appeared toplay an important role in structuring the microbial food webof this ultra-oligotrophic lake in summer.  相似文献

A series of single-factor in situ experiments was conductedin a mesotrophic lake in Brandenburg, North Germany, to studythe predatory impact of Eudiaptomus graciloides (adults, copepodites, nauplii), cyclopoid copepods (adult Diacyclops bicuspidatus,Thermocyclops oithonoides) and daphnids (adult Daphnia hyalina,Daphnia cucullata) on the microbial community (bacteria, autotrophicpicoplankton, flagellates, ciliates). All zooplankton speciestested reduced the ciliate community significantly and ingestionrates were always higher for ciliates in the 20–55 µmsize category as compared to smaller ciliates (10–20 µm).Adult E.graciloides, which exhibited the highest predatory impacton ciliates, differed from cyclopoids and daphnids by theirability to decimate ciliates to very low abundances. Ingestionrates of ciliates by the crustacean zooplankton followed thesequence E.graciloides > daphnids = cyclopoids = copepodites. While top-down control was evident for ciliates, top-down effectsdown to the autotrophic picoplankton and flagellates were mostlyrestricted to Daphnia-dominated treatments. Top-down effectswere never strong enough to produce negative bacterial growthrates. For all zooplankton tested, clearance rates for ciliatesexceeded those for phytoplankton. Besides the potential of thecrustacean zooplankton to influence the structure of ciliatecommunities, ciliates may contribute to the energy demands ofcopepods and daphnids, especially when phytoplankton resourcesare limited.  相似文献

Boeckella, the dominant calanoid in many Southern Hemispherelakes, can survive, grow and reproduce to varying extents onmonocultures of cyanobacteria. In this study, we determinedthe effects of algal and cyanobacterial foods of different nutritionalvalue and concentration on food preferences of adult femaleBoeckella trianiculata and Boeckella hamata. Four species ofcyanobacteria (Anabaena flos-aquae, Nostoc sp. 2, OscillatoriatenuisandMicrocystis aeruginosa) were offered alone and mixedwith equal biomasses of Cryptomonas sp., Choricystis or a cyanobacterium.Food preferences were calculated as ratios of the rates at whichthe copepods removed each food at high and low food concentrations. In high-concentration mixtures with cyanobacteria, Cryptomonaswas consistently preferred by both Boeckella spp. In low-concentrationmixtures, both Boeckella spp. preferred Anabaena and Nostoc, which they removed at high rates(81–142 ml mg–1h–1), although Cryptomonas was selected in preferenceto Oscillatoria and Microcystis. When fed mixtures of filamentouscyanobacteria, both species of Boeckella showed invariant discriminationagainst Nostoc, andshifts in preference between Anabaena andOscillatoria that were related to food concentration. Microcystis, the least favouredfood, appeared to have a toxic effect on B.triarticulata. 1Present address: Nursing and Midwifery Department, Otago Polytechnic,Forth Street, Dunedin, New Zealand  相似文献

To gain better insight into the importance of predator and resourcecontrol in New Zealand lakes we surveyed the late summer trophicstructure of 25 shallow South Island lakes with contrastingnutrient levels (6–603 µg TP l–1) and fishdensities. Total catch of fish per net (CPUE) in multi-meshgillnets placed in the open water and the littoral zones waspositively related with the nutrient level. Trout CPUE was negativelycorrelated with total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN).Zooplankton seemed largely influenced by fish, as high fishCPUE coincided with low zooplankton and Daphnia biomass, lowaverage weight of cladocerans, low contribution of Daphnia tototal cladoceran biomass, low ratio of calanoids to total copepodbiomass and low ratio of zooplankton biomass to phytoplanktonbiomass. However, chlorophyll a was only slightly negativelyrelated to Daphnia biomass and not to zooplankton biomass ina multiple regression that included TN and TP. Ciliate abundancewas positively related to chlorophyll a and negatively to Daphniabiomass, but not to total zooplankton biomass, while no relationshipswere found between heterotrophic nanoflagellates and zooplankton. The relationships between fish abundance and nutrients and fishabundance and zooplankton:phytoplankton ratio and between chlorophylla and TP largely followed the pattern obtained for 42 northtemperate Danish lakes. We conclude that fish, including trout, have a major effect on the zooplankton community structure andbiomass in the pelagial of the shallow oligotrophic to slightlyeutrophic New Zealand lakes, but that the cascading effectson phytoplankton and protist are apparently modest.  相似文献

Autotrophic picoplankton populations in Lake Kinneret are composedof picocyanobacteria and picoeukaryotes. Overall, the ratesof photosynthetic carbon fixed by autotrophic picoplankton duringthis study were low (0.01–1.5 mg Cm–3 h–1).The highest chlorophyll photosynthetic activity of the <3µm cell-size fraction was found in spring, when picoeukaryotespredominated and in addition small nanoplankton passed throughthe filters. The maximum cell-specific photosynthetic rate ofcarbon fixation by picocyanobacteria and picoeukaryotes was2.5 and 63 fg C cell–1 h–1, respectively. The highestspecific carbon fixation rate of autotrophic picoplankton was11 µg C µg–1 Chl h–1 The proportionalcontribution of autotrophic picoplankton to total photosynthesisusually increased with depth. Picocyanobacteria collected fromthe dark, anaerobic hypolimnion were viable and capable of activephotosynthesis when incubated at water depths within the euphoticzone. Maximum rates of photosynthesis (Pmax) for picocyanobacteriaranged from 5.4 to 31.4 fg C cell–1 h–1 with thehighest values in hypolimnetic samples exposed to irradiance.Photosynthetic efficiency (  相似文献

Feeding experiments were conducted with the ambush-feeding copepodAcartia tonsa and the feeding-current-generating copepod Temoralongicornis. The copepods were offered a mixed diet of the dinoflagellateHeterocapsa triquetra and the ciliate Balanion comatum of similarcell size. The dinoflagellate was offered at a constant concentrationof 10–15 cells mL–1, whereas the ciliate was offeredat a variety of concentrations, ranging from 7 to 57 cells mL–1.Copepods with different feeding modes possess different mechanismsfor prey detection, suggesting that the two copepods would responddifferently to the two prey types. Both copepods had significantlyhigher clearance rates on the highly motile ciliate than onthe less motile dinoflagellate. In encounters between A. tonsaand its prey, we argue that this is due to the higher hydromechanicalsignal generated by the ciliate. The advection feeding copepodT. longicornis fed on the two prey according to their relativeconcentrations; in this case, we suggest that although B. comatumis capable of detecting feeding-current-generating predators, the feeding current velocity generated by T. longicornis isgreater than the escape velocity of this ciliate.  相似文献

The impact of fish-mediated changes on the structure and grazingof zooplankton on phytoplankton and bacterioplankton was studiedin Lake Søbygaard during the period 1984–92 bymeans of in vitro grazing experiments (14C-labelled phytoplankton,3H-labelled bacterioplankton) and model predictions. Measuredzooplankton clearance rates ranged from 0–25 ml l–1h–1 on phytoplankton to 0–33 ml l–1 h–1on bacterioplankton. The highest rates were found during thesummer when Daphnia spp. were dominant. As the phytoplanktonbiomass was substantially greater than that of bacterioplanktonthroughout the study period, ingestion of phytoplankton was26-fold greater than that of bacterioplankton. Multiple regressionanalysis of the experimental data revealed that Daphnia spp.,Bosmina longirostris and Cyclops vicinus, which were the dominantzooplankton, all contributed significantly to the variationin ingestion of phytoplankton, while only Daphnia spp. contributedsignificantly to that of bacterioplankton. Using estimated meanvalues for clearance and ingestion rates for different zooplankters,we calculated zooplankton grazing on phytoplankton and bacterioplanktonon the basis of monitoring data of lake plankton obtained duringa 9 year study period. Summer mean grazing ranged from 2 to4% of phytoplankton production and 2% of bacterioplankton productionto maxima of 53 and 88%, respectively. The grazing percentagedecreased with increasing density of planktivorous fish caughtin August each year using gill nets and shore-line electrofishing. The changes along a gradient of planktivorous fish abundanceseemed highest for bacterioplankton. Accordingly, the percentagecontribution of bacterioplankton to the total ingestion of thetwo carbon sources decreased from a summer mean value of 8%in Daphnia-dominated communities at lower fish density to 0.7–1.1%at high fish density, when cyclopoid copepods or Bosmina androtifers dominated. Likewise, the percentage of phytoplanktonproduction channelled through the bacteria varied, it beinghighest (5–8%) at high fish densities. It is argued thatthe negative impact of zooplankton grazing on bacterioplanktonin shallow lakes is highest at intermediate phosphorus levels, under which conditions Daphnia dominate the zooplankton community.  相似文献

Feeding and metabolism of the siphonophore Sphaeronectes gracilis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The in situ predation rate of the siphonophore Sphaeronectesgracilis was estimated from gut content analysis of hand-collectedsiphonophores and from laboratory data on digestion rates ofprey organisms. At daytime prey densities of 0.25 copepods 1–1,S. gracilis was estimated to consume 8.1 – 15.4 prey day–1siphonophore–1. From data on abundances of siphonophoresand copepods, S. gracilis was estimated to consume 2–4%of the copepods daily. In laboratory experiments, ingestionrates averaged 13.8 prey day–1 siphonophore–1 atprey densities of 5 copepods 1–1 and 36.9 at 20 copeods1–1. This was equivalent to a specific ingestion rate(for both carbon and nitrogen) of –17% day–1 and45% day–1, respectively, while specific ingestion in situwas only 2% day–1. Ammonium excretion averaged 0.095 µg-atsiphonophore–1 day–1 at 5 prey 1–1, and 0.162at 20 prey 1–1. The specific respiration (carbon) andspecific excretion (nitrogen as ammonium) were calculated tobe 3% day–1 at the lower experimental food level, and5% day–1 at the higher food level. 1Contribution from the Catalina Marine Science Center No. 66. 2Present address: Dept. of Biology, University of Victoria,Victoria, B.C., Canada V8W 2Y2.  相似文献

Daphnia can suppress ciliates and rotifers through predationand interference competition, but it is not known whether thisproduces any direct benefit to Daphnia. We conducted survivorshipand cohort lifetable experiments to determine whether Daphniacan utilize ciliates and rotifers as food. Three species ofoligotrich ciliates (Halteria grandinella, Strobilidium gyransand Strobilidiumvelox) and one rotifer (Keratella cochlearis)were used. Lifetable experiments were conducted with a basallevel of algae (Cryptomonas sp.), plus either ciliates or rotifers, while survivorship experiments had only the rotifers or ciliates.Densities of 30 H.grandinella ml–1, 50 S.gyrans ml–1and 15 S.velox ml–1 enhanced Daphnia pulex's populationgrowth rate 35–50% over controls with only algae. TenS.gyrans ml–1 did not produce a significant change inDaphnia's growth rate. Densities of 100 and 300 K.cochlearis–1 increased Daphnia population growth rates by II and10%, respectively. Both 10 and 50 S.gyrans ml–1 enhancedDaphnia's survivorship compared to starved controls, but neither100 nor 300 K.cochlearis l–1 enhanced its survivorship. The amount of enhancement of Daphnia growth rates by rotifersand ciliates is roughly proportional to the death rates imposedby Daphnia. The death rate imposed by Daphnia on rotifers isa function of both algal density and Daphnia size. Per unitbiomass, neither ciliates nor Keratella appear to be as nutritiousfor Daphnia as is Cryptomonas.  相似文献

Although both nutrient inputs and zooplankton grazing are importantto phytoplankton and bacteria in lakes, controversy surroundsthe relative importance of grazing pressure for these two groupsof organisms. For phytoplankton, the controversy revolves aroundwhether zooplankton grazers, especially large cladocerans likeDaphnia, can effectively reduce phytoplankton populations regardlessof nutrient conditions. For bacteria, little is known aboutthe balance between possible direct and indirect effects ofboth nutrients and zooplankton grazing. However, there is evidencethat bacteria may affect phytoplankton responses to nutrientsor zooplankton grazing through direct or apparent competition. We performed a mesocosm experiment to evaluate the relativeimportance of the effects of nutrients and zooplankton grazingfor phytoplankton and bacteria, and to determine whether bacteriamediate phytoplankton responses to these factors. The factorialdesign crossed two zooplankton treatments (unsieved and sieved)with four nutrient treatments (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 µgphosphorus (P) l–1 day–1 together with nitrogen(N) at a N:P ratio of 20:1 by weight). Weekly sieving with 300µm mesh reduced the average size of crustacean zooplanktonin the mesocosms, decreased the numbers and biomass of Daphnia, and increased the biomass of adult copepods. Nutrient enrichmentcaused significant increases in phytoplankton chlorophyll a(4–5x), bacterial abundance and production (1.3x and 1.6x,respectively), Daphnia (3x) and total zooplankton biomass (2x).Although both total phytoplankton chlorophyll a and chlorophylla in the <35 µm size fraction were significantly lowerin unsieved mesocosms than in sieved mesocosms, sieving hadno significant effect on bacterial abundance or production. There was no statistical interaction between nutrient and zooplanktontreatments for total phytoplankton biomass or bacterial abundance, although there were marginally significant interactions forphytoplankton biomass <35 µm and bacterial production. Our results do not support the hypothesis that large cladoceransbecome less effective grazers with enrichment; rather, the differencebetween phytoplankton biomass in sieved versus unsieved zooplanktontreatments increased across the gradient of nutrient additions.Furthermore, there was no evidence that bacteria buffered phytoplanktonresponses to enrichment by either sequestering P or affectingthe growth of zooplankton.  相似文献

Two lakes of contrasting trophic state in the central NorthIsland of New Zealand were sampled monthly for protozoan ciliatesand potential food resources. Oligotrichs dominated numbersin both lakes. Subdominants in oligotrophic Lake Taupo includedAskenasia, Pscudobalanion and Urotri-cha, and in eutrophic LakeOkaro Prorodon, Coleps, Urocentrum, Stentor and Spirostomumwere important. Biomass was dominated by large predatory ciliatesand Stentor in Lake Taupo, and Prorodon and Stentor in LakeOkaro. The importance of Prorodon and Stentor to ciliate biomassis unusual and has not been reported for northern hemispherelakes. Small ciliates (<20 µm) capable of consumingparticles <2 µm were a major component of the ciliatecommunity in Lake Taupo. Peaks in ciliate abundance occurredat the same time in both lakes: in autumn, at the beginningof mixis and in spring. Ciliates were vertically stratifiedduring mixis and stratification in both lakes. The effect wasmore pronounced during deoxygenation of the hypolimnion in LakeOkaro which excluded oligotrichs and introduced benthic ciliates.Ciliates were less abundant (mean 40001–1 in Lake Okaroand 9001–1 in Lake Taupo) than in comparable northerntemperate lakes. There was no correlation between the seasonaldistribution of ciliates and chlorophyll a, primarily causedby a winter peak in chlorophyll a dominated by large speciesof phytoplankton in Lake Taupo, at a time when ciliate numberswere low. The only consistent, significant correlations weretotal ciliate numbers and individual species of ciliates withbacterial concentrations in both lakes and with picophytoplanktonin Lake Taupo.  相似文献

The amount of fucoxanthin, a taxonomically diagnostic carotenoid, recovered after passage through the guts of the copepods Acartiacalifomiensis and Calanus pacificus, was determined after thecopepods had fed on low (50 µg Cl–1) and high (350µg C1–1 for Acartia; 500 ug C H for Calanus) concentrationsof the diatom Thalassiosira weissftogii, during spring (May)and winter (December). Changes in pigment concentrations andcell abundances were assessed in experimental (with copepods)and control (without copepods) samples by standard incubationexperiments. Pigment recovery was assessed by (i) comparingthe amount of ingested pigment recovered in the experimentalgroups with that predicted to have been ingested from cell countdata and (ii) comparing fuco-xanthin/cell ratios in controland experimental samples. Both techniques suggested that pigmentloss is substantial (usually 60–100%), regardless of species, food availability or season. Patterns of pigment conservationdiffered between species, although pigment recovery was alwayshigher at high, than at low, food concentrations. Pigment recoveryin Acartia was higher (9.4–28.0%) in the spring than duringthe winter (0 recovery), regardless of food concentration. InCalanus, however, pigment recovery was always higher at high(34.9–67.8%) than at low (0 recovery) food concentrations, regardless of season.  相似文献

We analysed the temporal pattern of a Daphnia galeata populationand the development of the age-0 Ash community in a long-termbiomanipulated lake (Bautzen reservoir, Germany) during springand early summer of two successive years. In Bautzen reservoir, the age-0 Rsh-Daphnia interaction is a key process within thefood web due to the low abundance of adult zooplanktivorousfish. Daily consumption of daphnids by age-0 fish, as estimatedby a bioenergetics model, was compared to daily mortality ratesof daphnids. In addition, we estimated life history parametersof Daphnia that may indicate predation impact by fish. A midsummerdecline of daphnids occurred only in July of 1996, whereas in1995 the Daphnia biomass remained >4 mg wet weight 1–1for the entire summer. The percentage of total Daphnia mortalitydue to fish predation before the onset of the midsummer declinewas –2% day–1. Temporal patterns of individual size, clutch size and size at maturity also indicated that the 1996midsummer decline of daphnids was not the exclusive consequenceof age-0 fish predation. Instead, low reproductive capacityof daphnids also contributed significantly to the decline. Consequently,year-to-year variation of the Daphnia dynamics may be determinedby a fine-tuned ‘timing’ between the period of reducedfecundity and the time of the strongest predation impact byage-0 fish.  相似文献

The trophodynamics of a coastal plankton community were studied, focusing on fish larvae and their copepod prey. The major objectiveswere to describe distributional overlap and evaluate the predatoryimpact by larval fish. The study was carried out across DoggerBank in the North Sea, August-September 1991. Sampling transectscrossed tidal fronts off the Bank and plankton at all trophiclevels showed peak abundance within frontal zones. Also Verticallythere was a significant overlap in distributional patterns ofthe plankton. Seven species of fish larvae were abundant, ofthese sprat (Sprattus sprattus) dominated. The abundance ofone group of fish larvae peaked in the shallow water close tothe Bank, whereas other species, including sprat, were foundin deeper water. Prey preference and predation pressure of fishlarvae were assessed using information on prey sizes and growthrates of larvae and the copepod prey. We estimated larval removalof preferred prey sizes to 3–4% day–1, counterbalancedby a 3–7% day–1' replenishment from copepod productionand growth. Additional predation pressure on copepods by aninvertebrate predator was estimated to 1–3%day–1.In conclusion, the dynamics of fish larvae and other zooplankterswere closely linked. At peak abundances of fish larvae (>35mg dry weight m–2), the accumulated predation on specificsize ranges of copepods, exerted by larvae and other predators, could exceed the ability of copepod replenishment and intra-/interspecificcompetition among predators might take place.  相似文献

The uptake of bacteria and picoplankton sized fluorescentlylabelled beads was measured off the west coast of the SouthIsland of New Zealand in winter. Phytoflagellates and heterotrophicflagellates showed similar grazing rates on 0.49 µm beads, with mean clearance rates of 1.1 and 1.8 nl ind.–1 h–1,respectively. Clearance rates for 1.09 µm beads were 0.9nl ind.–1 h–1 for heterotrophic flagellates and0.5 nl ind.–1 h–1 for phytoflagellates. Non-loricateciliates had clearance rates of 1.5 µl ind.–1 h–1for the picoplankton sized particles. The heterotrophic flagellatesshowed no significant difference between clearance rates of0.49 and 1.09 µm particles. Phytoflagellates, however, showed an apparent preference for the smaller particles. Themeasurement of significant grazing by phytoflagellate populationsin the marine environment is important and indicates that weneed to reassess our concepts of food web structure.  相似文献

We analysed early spring protozooplankton peaks following winterstratification in two different basins (northeast, NE; southwest,SW) of an artificially-divided bog lake Große Fuchskuhle(Brandenburg,Germany). The maximum ciliate biomass and numbers (660 and 990µg l–1 of organic carbon, and 290 and 260 cellsml–1 in NE and SW, respectively) were reached in the surfacelayer during the ice melting and then continuously decreased. The surface layers were numerically dominated by species ofthe genus Urotricha, while in the ciliate biomass during thefirst part of the study, a mixotrophic oligotrich, Pelagostrombidiummirabile prevailed (Corg up to 940 µg l–1). We observeda conspicuous ciliate peak that could not be related to thefeeding activity of the dominant ciliate species upon picoplankton.Seemingly, the peak was related to the specific conditions resultingfrom the ice melting where these ciliates could be concentrated.Additionally, the mixotrophy of oligo-trichous species allowedthem to penetrate below the oxycline, although feeding on nanoplanktonsuch as flagellates was also very likely. Our direct measurementsof uptake rates of bacteria showed that the abundant strombidiidswere not nutritionally dependent on bacterivory. However, theciliate uptake rate (up to 670 bacteria ciliate–1 h–1)contributed significantly to the overall bacteria mortalityrate. The maximum (community average) cell-specific ciliatefeeding rate of over 200 bacteria ciliates–1 h–1was reached, along with an increasing contribution of scuticociliates, paralleled by a drop in large oligotrichs.  相似文献

In situ filtration responses of Daphnia galeata to changes in food quality   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In the stoichiometric study of phyto–zooplankton interactions,a controversy exists about how Daphnia species regulate theirfeeding rate when submitted to low-quality food (i.e. high dietarycarbon:phosphorus [C:P] ratio). In this study, we gathered dataover 3 years on in situ clearance rates of a Daphnia galeatapopulation, by conducting grazing experiments from April 1998to October 2000 in the Esch-sur-Sûre reservoir (Grand-Duchyof Luxembourg). Observed clearance rates (2.5–13.5 mLindividual–1 day–1, mean 7.0 mL individual–1day–1) were correlated with population and environmentalvariables. Mean body size of Daphnia individuals was the bestpredictor of clearance rate (r2 = 0.639), followed by watertemperature (r2 = 0.262) and P concentration in the seston (r2  相似文献

Laboea sirobila Lohmann, a marine oligotrich ciliate, was presentin Long Island Sound, USA, from March through June 1984. Peakabundance occurred in mid-June, when it was estimated that 10.2x 106 individuals m–2 were present in the 37-m deep watercolumn. When preserved specimens were examined with epifluorescencemicroscopy, the photosynthetic pigments chlorophyll and phycoerythrinwere observed within chloroplasts inside the ciliate. Thesepigments were also present in Myrionecta (formerly Mesodinium)rubrum Jankowski, a photosynthetic ciliate which co-occurredwith L. strobila during the present study. Vertical profilesshowed both ciliates to be most abundant in the upper few metersof the water column, especially during periods of strong thermalstratification.  相似文献

The abundance and biomass of marine planktonic ciliates in BorgeBay, Signy Island, were determined at monthly intervals betweenApril 1990 and June 1991. At least 24 different ciliate taxawere recorded from samples preserved in Lugol's iodine, includingthe tintinnids Codonellopsis balechi, Cymalocylis convallaria,Laackmaniella naviculaefera and Salpingella sp., and the aloricatetaxa Didinium sp. and Mesodinium rubrum. Ciliate abundance andbiomass exhibited a clear seasonal cycle with high values duringthe austral summer and low values in the austral winter. Abundanceranged from 0.3 103l–1 in September to 2.3 103l–1in January, while biomass ranged from 0.5 µg C l–1in October to 12.6 µg C l–1 in December. Small ciliatesdominated abundance throughout the year, and biomass duringwinter. Larger ciliates contributed most to biomass during summer.Aloricate ciliates were common throughout the year, while tintinnidscontributed substantially to abundance and biomass only duringsummer. Salpingella sp. was the commonest tintinnid, but C.convallariacontributed most to tintinnid biomass. The seasonal patternof ciliate abundance and biomass matched that of chlorophylla concentration and bacterial biomass, suggesting tight trophiccoupling between ciliates and other components of the pelagicmicrobial community. 1Present address: Scott Polar Research Institute, Universityof Cambridge, Lensfield Road, Cambridge CB2 1ER, UK  相似文献

Calcium limitation in Daphnia magna   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The role of ambient calcium concentrations on survival, moulting, growth and egg production was assessed in the cladoceran Daphniamagna. A threshold for survival was found in the range 0.1–0.5mg Ca l–1, even when ionic strength of the medium waskept constant. Accumulated length and length specific dry weightwas retarded at low Ca (0.5–1.0 mg Ca l–1) at foodconcentrations above incipient limiting level. For lower foodlevels, the effect of Ca on growth was less clear. The effectof low Ca on growth rate was most manifest during the firstdays after hatching, reflecting the higher Ca demands of theearly juveniles. Age-specific egg production was strongly reducedat Ca concentrations <10 mg Ca l–1. This was partlyan indirect effect of reduced growth rates, but could also bean effect of higher energetic costs associated with Ca uptakein a Ca-poor medium. The high Ca demands in D.magna may notbe representative of other Daphnia species. Nevertheless, highspecific Ca content seems to be a common property of Daphniaspp. and Ca deficiency could be a major determinant of speciessuccess and community structure among crustacean zooplankton;it also puts constraints on carbon sequestration in the pelagicfood web of softwater lakes.  相似文献
