Livestock dung provides an important direct pathway by which carbon and nutrients enter soils in pasture ecosystems and affects carbon and nitrogen cycling indirectly through changes in soil and plant properties. Here, we quantify dung deposition, decomposition, and the effects of dung on soil and plants in a Zoysia japonica grassland in Japan. We determined (1) the distribution of dung, (2) the mass loss rate of dung and the amount of carbon respired as CO2, and (3) changes in soil properties and aboveground biomass of Z. japonica. Dung deposition was 4.0–9.7 g C and 0.4–1.0 g N m?2 year?1 and distributed patchily (Morishita’s I δ  > 1). Most (71 %) of the carbon in dung deposited in June was lost within a single grazing period by aerobic decomposition, more than mass loss rate of Z. japonica litter in the first year (about 50 %), suggesting that grazing and defecation can accelerate carbon cycling compared with the typical litterfall–decomposition regime. Nitrogen in dung mass entered the soil as ammonium nitrogen and was nitrified. The spatiotemporal distribution of these processes corresponded to that of stimulated Z. japonica growth. These results suggested that dung deposition significantly affected the inorganic nitrogen status of soil and, therefore, the growth of Z. japonica. However, these effects were very restricted temporally (July–August) and spatially (within 10 cm from dung edge). Thus, such spatiotemporally restricted effects combined with the patchy distribution of dung may contribute to the heterogeneous structure of pasture ecosystems.  相似文献

To reduce CO2 emissions from alcoholic fermentation, Arthrospira platensis was cultivated in tubular photobioreactor using either urea or nitrate as nitrogen sources at different light intensities (60 μmol m?2 s?1?≤?I?≤?240 μmol m?2 s?1). The type of carbon source (pure CO2 or CO2 from fermentation) did not show any appreciable influence on the main cultivation parameters, whereas substitution of nitrate for urea increased the nitrogen-to-cell conversion factor (Y X/N ), and the maximum cell concentration (X m ) and productivity (P X ) increased with I. As a result, the best performance using gaseous emissions from alcoholic fermentation (X m ?=?2,960?±?35 g m?3, P X ?=?425?±?5.9 g m?3 day?1 and Y X/N ?=?15?±?0.2 g g?1) was obtained at I?=?120 μmol m?2 s?1 using urea as nitrogen source. The results obtained in this work demonstrate that the combined use of effluents rich in urea and carbon dioxide could be exploited in large-scale cyanobacteria cultivations to reduce not only the production costs of these photosynthetic microorganisms but also the environmental impact associated to the release of greenhouse emissions.  相似文献

There has been considerable interest in cultivation of green microalgae (Chlorophyta) as a source of lipid that can alternatively be converted to biodiesel. However, almost all mass cultures of algae are carbon-limited. Therefore, to reach a high biomass and oil productivities, the ideal selected microalgae will most likely need a source of inorganic carbon. Here, growth and lipid productivities of Tetraselmis suecica CS-187 and Chlorella sp were tested under various ranges of pH and different sources of inorganic carbon (untreated flue gas from coal-fired power plant, pure industrial CO2, pH-adjusted using HCl and sodium bicarbonate). Biomass and lipid productivities were highest at pH 7.5 (320?±?29.9 mg biomass L?1 day?1and 92?±?13.1 mg lipid L?1 day?1) and pH 7 (407?±?5.5 mg biomass L?1 day?1 and 99?±?17.2 mg lipid L?1 day?1) for T. suecica CS-187 and Chlorella sp, respectively. In general, biomass and lipid productivities were pH 7.5?>?pH 7?>?pH 8?>?pH 6.5 and pH 7?>?pH 7.5?=?pH 8?>?pH 6.5?>?pH 6?>?pH 5.5 for T. suecica CS-187 and Chlorella sp, respectively. The effect of various inorganic carbon on growth and productivities of T. suecica (regulated at pH?=?7.5) and Chlorella sp (regulated at pH?=?7) grown in bag photobioreactors was also examined outdoor at the International Power Hazelwood, Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. The highest biomass and lipid productivities of T. suecica (51.45?±?2.67 mg biomass L?1 day?1 and 14.8?±?2.46 mg lipid L?1 day?1) and Chlorella sp (60.00?±?2.4 mg biomass L?1 day?1 and 13.70?±?1.35 mg lipid L?1 day?1) were achieved when grown using CO2 as inorganic carbon source. No significant differences were found between CO2 and flue gas biomass and lipid productivities. While grown using CO2 and flue gas, biomass productivities were 10, 13 and 18 %, and 7, 14 and 19 % higher than NaHCO3, HCl and unregulated pH for T. suecica and Chlorella sp, respectively. Addition of inorganic carbon increased specific growth rate and lipid content but reduced biomass yield and cell weight of T. suecica. Addition of inorganic carbon increased yield but did not change specific growth rate, cell weight or content of the cell weight of Chlorella sp. Both strains showed significantly higher maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm) when grown under optimum pH.  相似文献

The high cost of aeration needed to tumble culture macroalgae is a limiting factor for integration with land-based finfish culture. Toward reducing this electricity cost, we compared intermittent aeration (16 h on:8 h off) with continuous aeration (24 h on) on the productivity of two strains of Chondrus crispus (Basin Head and Charlesville) and Palmaria palmata from Atlantic Canada between May and June 2011. Algal fronds were cultured under a 16:8-h light/dark photoperiod in 50-L tanks supplied with finfish effluent (49 μmol L?1 of ammonium and 11 μmol L?1 of phosphate) at a mean water flow rate of 0.4 L min?1. Nitrogen (N) influx was 1.8 gN m?2 day?1, and phosphorus (P) influx was 0.9 gP m?2 day?1, with uptake rates ranging from 0.02 to 2.4 gN m?2 day?1 and ?0.2 to 0.4 gP m?2 day?1. On average, the macroalgae culture system (algae and biofilms) removed 1.0 gN m?2 day?1 (51.9 %). The growth of macroalgae (pooled across treatment and strain) ranged from 0.5 to 1.6 % day?1, which accounted for a yield of 2.2 to 5.4 g DW m?2 day?1. Switching off aeration at night improved the growth rate of Basin Head Chondrus by 146 % and had no effect on growth rate or nitrogen and carbon removal by P. palmata and Charlesville Chondrus. Growth and yield of Basin Head Chondrus under intermittent aeration were over two times greater than both Charlesville Chondrus treatments.  相似文献

Corn’s (Zea mays L.) stover is a potential nonfood, herbaceous bioenergy feedstock. A vital aspect of utilizing stover for bioenergy production is to establish sustainable harvest criteria that avoid exacerbating soil erosion or degrading soil organic carbon (SOC) levels. Our goal is to empirically estimate the minimum residue return rate required to sustain SOC levels at numerous locations and to identify which macroscale factors affect empirical estimates. Minimum residue return rate is conceptually useful, but only if the study is of long enough duration and a relationship between the rate of residue returned and the change in SOC can be measured. About one third of the Corn Stover Regional Partnership team (Team) sites met these criteria with a minimum residue return rate of 3.9?±?2.18 Mg stover ha?1 yr?1, n?=?6. Based on the Team and published corn-based data (n?=?35), minimum residue return rate was 6.38?±?2.19 Mg stover ha?1 yr?1, while including data from other cropping systems (n?=?49), the rate averaged 5.74?±?2.36 Mg residue ha?1 yr?1. In broad general terms, keeping about 6 Mg residue ha?1 yr?1 maybe a useful generic rate as a point of discussion; however, these analyses refute that a generic rate represents a universal target on which to base harvest recommendations at a given site. Empirical data are needed to calibrate, validate, and refine process-based models so that valid sustainable harvest rate guidelines are provided to producers, industry, and action agencies.  相似文献

A congener comparison of native (Zostera marina) and introduced (Zostera japonica) eelgrasses was conducted in Willapa Bay, Washington, USA. Along intertidal transects, Z. japonica (0.1–1.5 m above mean lower low water [MLLW]) occurred above Z. marina (<0.6 m MLLW). Both species declined in shoot length at higher elevation, but Z. japonica was always shorter (20 vs. 100 cm) and occurred at higher shoot density (>3,800 vs. <360 m?2 in Z. marina). Z. japonica exhibited greater seasonal variation in biomass, with increases supported by both sustained asexual reproduction (rhizome branching) and recruitment from seeds (30 vs. <5% in Z. marina). Z. japonica’s successful invasion appears related to small size and high reproductive output, allowing it to spread quickly in a variable and stressful intertidal environment where competitive effects are low. Based on interannual changes in abundance, the native eelgrass has also recently increased in Willapa Bay, and one hypothesis involves “engineering” of suitable habitat at higher tidal elevations by Z. japonica.  相似文献

The Aminobacter sp. strain MSH1 has potential for pesticide bioremediation because it degrades the herbicide metabolite 2,6-dichlorobenzamide (BAM). Production of the BAM-degrading bacterium using aerobic bioreactor fermentation was investigated. A mineral salt medium limited for carbon and with an element composition similar to the strain was generated. The optimal pH and temperature for strain growth were determined using shaker flasks and verified in bioreactors. Glucose, fructose, and glycerol were suitable carbon sources for MSH1 (μ?=?0.1 h?1); slower growth was observed on succinate and acetic acid (μ?=?0.01 h?1). Standard conditions for growth of the MSH1 strain were defined at pH 7 and 25 °C, with glucose as the carbon source. In bioreactors (1 and 5 L), the specific growth rate of MSH1 increased from μ?=?0.1 h?1 on traditional mineral salt medium to μ?=?0.18 h?1 on the optimized mineral salt medium. The biomass yield under standard conditions was 0.47 g dry weight biomass/g glucose consumed. An investigation of the catabolic capacity of MSH1 cells harvested in exponential and stationary growth phases showed a degradation activity per cell of about 3?×?10?9 μg BAM h?1. Thus, fast, efficient, large-scale production of herbicide-degrading Aminobacter was possible, bringing the use of this bacterium in bioaugmentation field remediation closer to reality.  相似文献

The Kobresia pastures of the Tibetan Plateau represent the world’s largest alpine grassland ecosystem. These pastures remained stable during the last millennia of nomadic animal husbandry. However, strongly increased herds’ density has promoted overgrazing, with unclear consequences for vegetation and soils, particularly for cycles of carbon (C), nutrients and water. Vegetation-free patches of dead root-mat covered by blue-green algae and crustose lichens (crusts) are common in overgrazed Kobresia pastures, but their effect on C turnover processes is completely unknown. We tested the hypothesis that the crusts strongly affect the C cycle by examining: (i) the long-term C stock measured as soil organic matter content; (ii) medium-term C stock as dead roots; (iii) recent C fluxes analyzed as living roots and CO2 efflux; and (iv) fast decomposition of root exudates. Up to 7.5 times less aboveground and 1.9 times less belowground living biomass were found in crust patches, reflecting a much smaller C input to soil as compared with the non-crust Kobresia patches. A lower C input initially changed the long-term C stock under crusts in the upper root-mat horizon. Linear regression between living roots and CO2 efflux showed that roots contributed 23% to total CO2 under non-crust areas (mean July–August 5.4 g C m?2 day?1) and 18% under crusts (5.1 g C m?2 day?1). To identify differences in the fast turnover processes in soil, we added 13C labeled glucose, glycine and acetic acid, representing the three main groups of root exudates. The decomposition rates of glucose (0.7 day?1), glycine (1.5 day?1) and acetic acid (1.2 day?1) did not differ under crusts and non-crusts. More 13C, however, remained in soil under crusts, reflecting less complete decomposition of exudates and less root uptake. This shows that the crust patches decrease the rates of medium-term C turnover in response to the much lower C input. Very high 13C amounts recovered in plants from non-crust areas as well as the two times lower uptake by roots under crusts indicate that very dense roots are efficient competitors with microorganisms for soluble organics. In conclusion, the altered C cycle in the overgrazing-induced crustose lichens and blue-green algae crusts is connected with strongly decreased C input and reduced medium-term C turnover.  相似文献

The seasonal growth rates of three Sargassum species were studied along two reef flats of Teluk Kemang, located at Port Dickson, Malaysia from September 2009 to September 2010. Systematic quadrat and line transects were sampled monthly. Nondestructive sampling was conducted, whereby Sargassum plants were tagged and monitored for a 13-month period. The majority of the tagged Sargassum samples belonged to lower length classes (<200 mm), especially in 0–99 mm (Sargassum polycystum, 64.20 %; Sargassum binderi, 68.29 %; Sargassum siliquosum, 56.80 %). Analysis of the monthly mean thallus length (MTL) revealed a bimodal pattern in growth rates, with two periods of high growth rates (January–February 2010 and June–July 2010) and two periods of higher degenerative rates (April 2010 and September 2010). The highest growth rates were recorded in February 2010 (4.08 mm day?1) for S. siliquosum, and in June for S. polycystum (2.54 mm day?1) and S. binderi (1.89 mm day?1). Redundancy analysis (RDA) was employed to test for the overall correlation between monthly variation in MTL and the environmental parameters measured; S. binderi was correlated with ambient temperature (r = 0.5395), while S. siliquosum was correlated with seawater salinity (r = 0.5419) and ammonia (r = ?0.4603). This study reviews the seasonality of Sargassum species on two reefs of Teluk Kemang and their correlation with the selected environmental parameters.  相似文献

Background and aims

Wetlands are important carbon sinks across the planet. However, soil carbon sequestration in tropical freshwater wetlands has been studied less than its counterpart in temperate wetlands. We compared carbon stocks and carbon sequestration in freshwater wetlands with various geomorphic features (estuarine, perilacustrine and depressional) and various plant communities (marshes and swamps) on the tropical coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. These swamps are dominated by Ficus insipida, Pachira aquatic and Annona glabra and the marshes by Typha domingensis, Thalia geniculata, Cyperus giganteus, and Pontederia sagittata.

Methods

The soil carbon concentration and bulk density were measured every 2 cm along 80 cm soil profiles in five swamps and five marshes. Short-term sediment accretion rates were measured during a year using horizontal makers in three of the five swamps and marshes, the carbon sequestration was calculated using the accretion rates, and the bulk density and the percentage of organic carbon in the surficial layer was measured.

Results

The average carbon concentration ranged from 50 to 150 gC kg?1 in the marshes and 50 to 225 gC kg?1 in the swamps. When the wetlands were grouped according to their geomorphic features, no significant differences in the carbon stock (P?=?0.095) were found (estuarine (25.50?±?2.26 kgC m?2), perilacustrine (28.33?±?2.74 kgC m?2) and depressional wetlands (34.93?±?4.56 kgC m?2)). However, the carbon stock was significantly higher (P?=?0.030) in the swamps (34.96?±?1.3 kgC m?2) than in the marshes (25.85?±?1.19 kgC m?2). The average sediment accretion rates were 1.55?±?0.09 cm yr?1 in the swamps and 0.84?±?0.02 cm yr?1 in the marshes with significant differences (P?=?0.040). The rate of carbon sequestration was higher (P?=?0.001) in swamp soils (0.92?±?0.12 kgC m?2 yr?1) than marsh soils (0.31?±?0.08 kgC m?2 yr?1). Differences in the rates of carbon sequestration associated with geomorphic features were found between the swamp ecosystems (P?<?0.05); i.e., higher values were found in the swamps than in the marshes in perilacustrine and estuarine wetlands (P?<?0.05). However, no significant differences (P?=?0.324) in carbon sequestration rates were found between the marsh and swamp areas of the depressional site.

Conclusions

Swamp soils are more important contributors to the carbon stock and sequestration than are marsh soils, resulting in a reduction in global warming, which suggests that the plant community is an important factor that needs to be considered in global carbon budgets and projects of restoration and conservation of wetlands.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to survey the growth and astaxanthin production of E17, an astaxanthin-rich mutant of Chlorella zofingiensis, through feeding the low-cost carbon source cane molasses. In heterotrophic batch cultivation, E17 fed with pretreated molasses achieved biomass (1.79 g L?1 day?1) and astaxanthin (1.99 mg L?1 day?1) productivities comparable to those with glucose, which were about 2- and 2.8-fold of those fed with untreated molasses, respectively. Molasses-induced astaxanthin accumulation may be attributed to the elicited expression of carotenogenic genes, in particular the genes specifically responsible for the ketolation and hydroxylation of β-carotene to form astaxanthin. A two-stage fed-batch strategy was employed to grow E17 and induce astaxathin accumulation, resulting in 45.6 g L?1 biomass and 56.1 mg L?1 astaxanthin, the highest volumetric astaxanthin yield ever reported for this alga. In addition, the astaxanthin production by E17 was tested with a semi-continuous culture method, where the directly diluted raw molasses (giving 5 g L?1 sugar) was used as the carbon source. Little growth inhibition of E17 was observed in the semi-continuous culture with a biomass productivity of 1.33 g L?1 day?1 and an astaxanthin productivity of 0.83 mg L?1 day?1. The mixotrophic semi-continuous cultures enhanced the biomass and astaxanthin productivities by 29.3 % and 42.2 %, respectively. This study highlights the potential of using the industrially cheap cane molasses towards large-scale cost-saving production of the high-value ketocarotenoid astaxanthin.  相似文献

Different pilot-scale outdoor photobioreactors using medium recycling were operated in a greenhouse under different environmental conditions and the growth rates (0.1 to 0.5 day?1) obtained evaluated in order to compare them with traditional systems used in aquaculture. The annualized volumetric growth rate for Nannochloropsis gaditana was 0.26 g l?1 day?1 (peak 0.4 g l?1 day?1) at 0.4 day?1 in a 5-cm wide flat-panel bioreactor (FP-PBR). The biomass productivity achieved in this reactor was 10-fold higher than in traditional reactors, reaching values of 28 % and 45 % dry weight (d.w.) of lipids and proteins, respectively, with a 4.3 % (d.w.) content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). A model for predicting EPA productivity from N. gaditana cultures that takes into account the existence of photolimitation and photoinhibition of growth under outdoor conditions is presented. The effect of temperature and average irradiance on EPA content is also studied. The maximum EPA productivity attained is 30 mg l?1 day?1.  相似文献

We measured CO2 concentration and determined evasion rate and piston velocity across the water–air interface in flow-through chambers at eight stations along two 20 km long streams in agricultural landscapes in Zealand, Denmark. Both streams were 9–18-fold supersaturated in CO2 with daily means of 240 and 340 μM in January–March and 130 and 180 μM in June–August. Annual CO2 medians were 212 μM in six other streams and 460 μM in four groundwater wells, while seven lakes were weakly supersaturated (29 μM). Air concentrations immediately above stream surfaces were close to mean atmospheric conditions except during calm summer nights. Piston velocity from 0.4 to 21.6 cm h?1 was closely related to current velocity permitting calculation of evasion rates for entire streams. CO2 evasion rates were highest in midstream reaches (170–1,200 mmol m?2 day?1) where CO2-rich soil water entered fast stream flow, while rates were tenfold lower (25–100 mmol m?2 day?1) in slow-flowing lower reaches. CO2 evasion mainly derived from the input of CO2 in soil water. The variability of CO2 evasion along the two lowland streams covered much of the range in sub-Arctic and temperate streams reported previously. In budgets for the two stream catchments, loss of carbon from soils via the hydrological cycle was substantial (3.2–5.7 mmol m?2 day?1) and dominated by CO2 consumed to form HCO3 ? by mineral dissolution (69–76%) and export of organic carbon (15–23%) relative to dissolved CO2 export (7–9%).  相似文献

Background and aims

Soil carbon storage is an important component of global carbon cycling. Andean Andisols have high carbon content and are vulnerable to erosion because of agricultural intensification and deforestation. This study examines the effects of land use on erosion and soil carbon storage in the Río Chimbo watershed of Ecuador.

Methods

Soil carbon content, age, and erosion estimated from 137Cs inventories was measured along an elevational transect under annual cropping, natural forest, páramo, pasture, and tree plantations.

Results

Land use, particularly annual cropping, affected 137Cs levels in the upper soil layers, but did not have an impact on total carbon storage to a depth of 1 m. Relative erosion rates estimated from 137Cs inventories at sites under annual cropping averaged 27 t ha?1?y?1 over the erosion rate of non-cultivated sites. A linear relationship was observed between soil carbon age (determined by 14C levels) and 137Cs levels, where pasture sites had lower 137Cs and older carbon compared to natural forest sites.

Conclusions

The effects of land use on soil loss in the Río Chimbo watershed suggest a loss and/or removal of soil carbon, particularly under annual cropping.  相似文献

The organophosphate pesticide chlorpyrifos (CP) has been used extensively since the 1960s for insect control. However, its toxic effects on mammals and persistence in environment necessitate its removal from contaminated sites, biodegradation studies of CP-degrading microbes are therefore of immense importance. Samples from a Pakistani agricultural soil with an extensive history of CP application were used to prepare enrichment cultures using CP as sole carbon source for bacterial community analysis and isolation of CP metabolizing bacteria. Bacterial community analysis (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis) revealed that the dominant genera enriched under these conditions were Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter and Stenotrophomonas, along with lower numbers of Sphingomonas, Agrobacterium and Burkholderia. Furthermore, it revealed that members of Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, α- and γ-Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were present at initial steps of enrichment whereas β-Proteobacteria appeared in later steps and only Proteobacteria were selected by enrichment culturing. However, when CP-degrading strains were isolated from this enrichment culture, the most active organisms were strains of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Pseudomonas mendocina and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These strains degraded 6–7.4 mg L?1 day?1 of CP when cultivated in mineral medium, while the consortium of all four strains degraded 9.2 mg L?1 day?1 of CP (100 mg L?1). Addition of glucose as an additional C source increased the degradation capacity by 8–14 %. After inoculation of contaminated soil with CP (200 mg kg?1) disappearance rates were 3.83–4.30 mg kg?1 day?1 for individual strains and 4.76 mg kg?1 day?1 for the consortium. These results indicate that these organisms are involved in the degradation of CP in soil and represent valuable candidates for in situ bioremediation of contaminated soils and waters.  相似文献

The membraneless bioelectrochemical reactor (Ml-BER) is useful for dark hydrogen fermentation. The effect of the electrochemical reaction on microorganisms in the Ml-BER was investigated using glucose as the substrate and compared with organisms in a membraneless non-bioelectrochemical reactor (Ml-NBER) and bioelectrochemical reactor (BER) with a proton exchange membrane. The potentials on the working electrode of the Ml-BER and BER with membrane were regulated to ?0.9 V (versus Ag/AgCl) to avoid water electrolysis with a carbon electrode. The Ml-BER showed suppressed methane production (19.8?±?9.1 mg-C·L?1·day?1) and increased hydrogen production (12.6?±?3.1 mg-H·L?1·day?1) at pHout 6.2?±?0.1, and the major intermediate was butyrate (24.9?±?2.4 mM), suggesting efficient hydrogen fermentation. In contrast, the Ml-NBER showed high methane production (239.3?±?17.9 mg-C·L?1·day?1) and low hydrogen production (0.2?±?0.0 mg-H·L?1·day?1) at pHout 6.3?±?0.1. In the cathodic chamber of the BER with membrane, methane production was high (276.3?±?20.4 mg-C·L?1·day?1) (pHout, 7.2?±?0.1). In the anodic chamber of the BER with membrane (anode-BER), gas production was low because of high lactate production (43.6?±?1.7 mM) at pHout 5.0?±?0.1. Methanogenic archaea were not detected in the Ml-BER and anode-BER. However, Methanosarcina sp. and Methanobacterium sp. were found in Ml-NBER. Prokaryotic copy numbers in the Ml-BER and Ml-NBER were similar, as were the bacterial community structures. Thus, the electrochemical reaction in the Ml-BER affected hydrogenotrophic and acetoclastic methanogens, but not the bacterial community.  相似文献

Microalgae cultivation systems can be divided broadly into open ponds and closed photobioreactors. This study investigated the growth and biomass productivity of the halophilic green alga Tetraselmis sp. MUR-233, grown outdoors in paddle wheel-driven open raceway ponds and in a tubular closed photobioreactor (Biocoil) at a salinity of 7 % NaCl (w/v) between mid-March and June 2010 (austral autumn/winter). Volumetric productivity in the Biocoil averaged 67 mg ash-free dry weight (AFDW) L?1 day?1 when the culture was grown without CO2 addition. This productivity was 86 % greater, although less stable, than that achieved in the open raceway pond (36 mg L?1 day?1) grown at the same time in the autumn period. The Tetraselmis culture in the open raceway pond could be maintained in semi-continuous culture for the whole experimental period of 3 months without an additional CO2 supply, whereas in the Biocoil, under the same conditions, reliable semi-continuous culture was only achievable for a period of 38 days. However, stable semi-continuous culture was achieved in the Biocoil by the addition of CO2 at a controlled pH of ~7.5. With CO2 addition, the volumetric biomass productivity in the Biocoil was 85 mg AFDW L?1 day?1 which was 5.5 times higher than the productivity achieved in the open raceway pond (15 mg AFDW L?1 day?1) with CO2 addition and 8 times higher compared to the productivity in the open raceway pond without CO2 addition (11 mg AFDW L?1 day?1), when cultures were grown in winter. The illuminated area productivities highlight an alternative story and showed that the open raceway pond had a three times higher productivity (3,000 mg AFDW m?2 day?1) compared to the Biocoil (850 mg AFDW m?2 day?1). Although significant differences were found between treatments and cultivation systems, the overall average lipid content for Tetraselmis sp. MUR-233 was 50 % in exponential phase during semi-continuous cultivation.  相似文献

Ulva spp. are used in a wide range of commercial applications, including bioremediation, food, bioenergy, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture. The sulfated polysaccharide ulvan obtained from Ulva spp. is of interest for triggering plant defenses against disease. However, the cultivation of Ulva spp. is still in its infancy. This study verified the feasibility of cultivating Ulva lactuca and Ulva flexuosa at two sites on the tropical Brazilian coast. We investigated the following: (a) methods to induce sporulation, (b) comparison of seeding ropes inoculated in vitro versus seeding at sea over 40 days, (c) production and harvest cycles at 15 and 30 days, (d) growth productivity of U. flexuosa at sea and in outdoor tanks, and (e) comparison of ulvan yields from biomass cultivated in tanks and the sea. High nutrient treatment was the most efficient method to induce sporulation (7,540?±?3,133 spores m?1). Sea-based cultivation of U. flexuosa was only successful at one site. Seeding of ropes in vitro was more efficient than seeding at sea (0.31?±?0.20 g m?2 day?1), and 15-day harvest cycles were most efficient (20.1?±?1.8 % day?1; 0.46?±?0.11 g m?2 day?1). Despite differences in plant growth in tanks (27.9?±?4.4 % day?1) and at sea (20.1?±?1.8 % day?1), the dry biomass and ulvan yields (17.7?±?5.0 %) did not differ between these systems. Cultivation of U. flexuosa was feasible at sea using in vitro seeding with a production cycle of 15 days in Brazilian tropical waters and tanks with high irradiance and enriched seawater.  相似文献

This paper presents an uncomplicated approach to improve estimates of groundwater nutrient load to a marine embayment. A two-dimensional chemical profile of shallow groundwater was analysed in a sandy beach in three seasons (early summer, late summer and mid winter) and an adjusted estimate of groundwater nutrient discharge was derived that accounts for a complex biogeochemical environment and non-conservative behaviour of nutrients in the pre-discharge beach groundwater. The study was conducted at Cockburn Sound, Western Australia, where there has been significant groundwater contamination and associated marine ecological degradation. Losses in nitrogen and increases in phosphorus were observed along the discharge pathway beyond that expected from mixing with marine water, and the changes were attributed to chemically and biologically mediated reactions. A slow groundwater velocity (0.14–0.18 m day?1), high organic carbon (TOC = 0.35–4.9 mmol l?1, DOC = 0.28–4.6 mmol l?1) and low to sub-oxic conditions (DO = 0.4–24% saturation) were deemed suitable for chemically and biologically mediated reactions to occur and subsequently alter regional estimates of groundwater nutrient concentration. Accounting for this environment, groundwater loads were calculated that were 1–2 orders of magnitude less than previous regional-based estimates: 0.4–13 kg NO x ?  day?1, 0.2–24 kg NH4 + day?1 and 0.004–0.8 kg FRP day?1. This paper applies knowledge of recent research and presents scope to marine managers or modellers to account for groundwater inputs to the marine environment.  相似文献
