The eggshells of the cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus), gannet (Sula bassana), guinea fowl (Numida meleagris), greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber), and shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) have been separated into two groups on the basis of the composition of their outer stratum. In the domestic fowl, guinea fowl and greater flamingo the outer stratum is an organic cuticle while in the sea-birds it is an inorganic cover rich in vaterite. The calcareous deposits on the membranes of eggs of the domestic fowl which are shell-less at oviposition have been shown to consist essentially of the vaterite form of calcium carbonate. Reasons for the occurrence of this polymorph of calcium carbonate are discussed with relation to the physiology of the birds.  相似文献

Body mass, fat stores, activities of lipogenic and lipolytic enzymes, and plasma corticosterone were measured throughout seasonal and diel transitions from fall through spring encompassing the non-migratory stages of early and mid winter, the prealternate molt, and the spring migratory stage in captive dark-eyed juncos to determine the physiological mechanisms underlying adaptations for migration. On a seasonal basis, lipid enzymes and corticosterone varied little throughout the stages even though the birds underwent dramatic alterations in mass, fat deposition, behavior, and activation of the reproductive axis. By contrast, diel changes were found in lipogenesis, lipolysis, muscle lipoprotein lipase, and plasma corticosterone when comparing birds in the two phases of spring migration--active flight and resting, as during times of stopover. In these two phases of migration, coordination of the lipogenic and lipolytic systems appear to maximize storage of fatty acids during rest and delivery/utilization during flight. Diel patterns of corticosterone revealed fairly consistent peaks during the night time (23:00) throughout the nonmigratory period. The profile of this pattern altered during the migratory period with variation between the flight and resting phases. In sum, the results from these captive studies offer a new approach for studying the regulation of migratory physiology in free-living birds.  相似文献

Plasma levels of LH, DHT, testosterone, and corticosterone were measured for all members in free-living winter flocks of willow tits, Parus montanus. Hormonal data were related to (1) flock size and (2) age/sex differences. The winter flock defends a large winter territory and shows a well-established social hierarchy in which adults consistently dominate first-year birds. One winter group normally consists of four individuals, two adults and two juveniles. In flocks containing four or five members juvenile willow tits had significantly higher corticosterone values than adults. In small-sized groups, containing three members, all individuals had high plasma levels of corticosterone. No other effects of flock size was found. When data were treated on an age/sex basis, i.e., flock size was not considered, juvenile females were found to have significantly higher plasma levels of testosterone than adult birds, and also significantly higher levels of DHT than juvenile males and adult females. Also, juvenile willow tits had significantly higher plasma levels of corticosterone than adult birds.  相似文献

1. The combined actions of ACTH, corticosterone and prolactin (PRL) in the acute regulation of corticosteroidogenesis were investigated using isolated adrenocortical cells from intact and hypophysectomized (hypox) rats (Rattus norvegicus) and from intact male domestic fowl (Gallus gallus domesticus). 2. Exogenous corticosterone suppressed to about 50% ACTH-induced corticosterone production of cells from either species. This suppression, in part, was due to corticosterone degradation. 3. oPRL, in the presence or absence of ACTH, raised corticosterone production of hypox rat cells, but not intact rat and domestic fowl cells. 4. In addition, oPRL counteracted the corticosterone-induced suppression of net ACTH-stimulated corticosterone production of hypox rat and intact domestic fowl cells, but not intact rat cells. 5. The potency of oPRL with domestic fowl cells was 4 times that with hypox rat cells. 6. Furthermore, in domestic fowl cells, the effect of oPRL was Ca2+-dependent.  相似文献

Circadian variations in concentrations of plasma corticosterone were investigated in the white-throated sparrow maintained on short (10-hr) or long (16-hr) daily photoperiods. In addition, the plasma concentrations of corticosterone were determined throughout a day in birds that were in the reproductively photosensitive spring migratory condition, the reproductively photorefractory post nuptial molt condition, and the fall migratory condition. Distinct unimodal rhythms were found in photosensitive birds. The daily rise occurred 12 hr after the offset of light in birds kept on both the short and the long photoperiodic regimens. There was no discernible daily variation in photorefractory birds kept on a 16 hr daily photoperiod and there was a bimodal rhythm in the birds that were in the fall migratory condition. The results are consistent with an hypothesis that assigns an important role to the circadian rhythm of corticosteroid concentration in the photoperiodic mechanism controlling seasonal reproductive and migratory conditions in the white-throated sparrow.  相似文献

Summary Both avian corticosteroid hormones, aldosterone and corticosterone, increased short-circuit current across the wall of the ceca of the domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus) in vitro. About 80% of this short-circuit current was inhibited by the Na-channel blocking drug amiloride. Corticosterone was about ten times less potent than aldosterone in increasing short-circuit current and it exerted a similar maximal effect. Cortisol (an endogenous corticosteroid hormone in mammals but not birds) was about ten times less potent than corticosterone and this difference appeared to reflect the presence of the 17-OH group in cortisol. Carbenoxolene, which inhibits 11-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, increased the effect of corticosterone. This effect is consistent with inhibition of the metabolism of corticosterone to 11-dehydrocorticosterone. The latter was found to be about 100 times less potent than corticosterone. The effects of both aldosterone and corticosterone (also dexamethasone) were abolished by the mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist spironolactone. The results suggest that corticosterone has an effect similar to aldosterone but in vivo its action may be depressed by the activity of 11-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. The sensitivity of the cecal preparations to corticosterone indicates that this hormone could contribute to the regulation of transcecal Na transport (absorption) in vivo.Abbreviations 11-HSD 11-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase - sc short-circuit current - KRB Krebs bicarbonate solution  相似文献

Background

Domestication of chicken is believed to have occurred in Southeast Asia, especially in Indus valley. However, non-inclusion of Indian red jungle fowl (RJF), Gallus gallus murghi in previous studies has left a big gap in understanding the relationship of this major group of birds. In the present study, we addressed this issue by analyzing 76 Indian birds that included 56 G. g. murghi (RJF), 16 G. g. domesticus (domestic chicken) and 4 G. sonneratii (Grey JF) using both microsatellite markers and mitochondrial D-loop sequences. We also compared the D-loop sequences of Indian birds with those of 779 birds obtained from GenBank.  相似文献

Data on interbirth intervals are reported for two forest-living guenons,Cercopithecus mitis andC. ascanius, from a western Kenyan site. Measured intervals for females whose first offspring survived varied from 24 to 54 months (median 47,N=10) forC. mitis, and from 49 to 60 months (median 52,N=3) forC. ascanius. Intervals were shorter when the first of two offspring died. These results are supported by data on estimated intervals, in which the date of the first of two births was estimated, and incomplete intervals. Our measurements exceed previous estimates of interbirth intervals in wild populations and measured intervals of captive animals. Compared to closely related species inhabiting unpredictable and seasonal environments, these forest guenons breed very slowly indeed.  相似文献

To better understand the trophic role of ctenophores in Antarctica during austral fall and winter, a major species of cydippid ctenophore, Callianira antarctica, was collected during April/May (fall) and August/September (winter) 2002 in the vicinity of Marguerite Bay. Lipid content, lipid classes, fatty acids, fatty alcohols and sterols were analyzed in animals, together with lipid biomarkers in krill and copepod species representing potential ctenophore prey. Lipid content in ctenophores collected in winter was slightly higher than from animals in fall (4.8 and 3.5% of dry weight, respectively). Polar lipids were the dominant lipid class in ctenophores, accounting for over half of the lipid content, with significant amounts of free fatty alcohols (more than 10% of total lipid content) detected. Lipid-class composition, however, differed significantly between seasons, with significant amounts of neutral lipid (wax esters and triacylglycerols) only detected in animals from fall. Although the dominant lipid classes in ctenophores varied between fall and winter, individual lipids (i.e., fatty acids, alcohols and sterols) showed only minor changes between seasons. Specifically, long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids [20:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3)] found in high abundance in larval krill were also elevated in ctenophores collected in winter. Very high amounts of monounsaturated fatty alcohols, particularly 20:1(n-9) and 22:1(n-11), known to be important components of wax esters in calanoid copepods, were also observed. Multivariate analysis using the suite of lipids found indicated that copepods are an important diet item for ctenophores in the study area. Results further suggest that C. antarctica feed actively year-round, with larval krill providing a food resource during austral winter.  相似文献

Wild birds are common reservoirs of Salmonella enterica. Wild birds carrying resistant S. enterica may pose a risk to public health as they can spread the resistant bacteria across large spatial scales within a short time. Here, we whole-genome sequenced 375 S. enterica strains from wild birds collected in 41 U.S. states during 1978–2019 to examine bacterial resistance to antibiotics and heavy metals. We found that Typhimurium was the dominant S. enterica serovar, accounting for 68.3% (256/375) of the bird isolates. Furthermore, the proportions of the isolates identified as multi-antimicrobial resistant (multi-AMR: resistant to at least three antimicrobial classes) or multi-heavy metal resistant (multi-HMR: resistant to at least three heavy metals) were both 1.87% (7/375). Interestingly, all the multi-resistant S. enterica (n = 12) were isolated from water birds or raptors; none of them was isolated from songbirds. Plasmid profiling demonstrated that 75% (9/12) of the multi-resistant strains carried resistance plasmids. Our study indicates that wild birds do not serve as important reservoirs of multi-resistant S. enterica strains. Nonetheless, continuous surveillance for bacterial resistance in wild birds is necessary because the multi-resistant isolates identified in this study also showed close genetic relatedness with those from humans and domestic animals.  相似文献

Disturbance during development may have lasting effects on the growth rates and stress physiology of birds. Although repeated handling by researchers is often necessary, the possible effects of such handling on the development of semi‐altricial young are unclear. We examined the effect of daily handling on growth rates and plasma corticosterone levels of Leach's Storm‐Petrel (Oceanodroma leucorhoa) chicks on Kent Island in the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick, Canada, during the 2011 nesting season. From post‐hatch day 7 to post‐hatch days 14–36, birds in the experimental group were extracted from burrows and measured (wing, tarsus, and mass) for ~3 min every day, whereas birds in the control group were left undisturbed. After the treatment period, blood was collected from birds in both groups within 3 min of initially reaching into burrows (baseline) and after a 30‐min restraint stress test to assess the effect of early life disturbance on programming of the hypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal (HPA) axis. A second acute restraint stress test was conducted three weeks after the end of the treatment period to investigate possible longer term effects of early life disturbance. Growth rates of wings and tarsi were similar for handled chicks (N = 18) and non‐handled control chicks (N = 21), as were baseline and 30‐min acute restraint stress‐induced corticosterone levels. As also reported in previous studies of other altricial and semi‐altricial species, older chicks (42–64 d old) had higher plasma corticosterone levels than younger chicks (21–43 d old) after acute restraint stress tests, reflecting delayed development of the HPA axis. The age‐related increase in HPA axis sensitivity observed prior to fledging could facilitate foraging and predator avoidance behaviors while minimizing exposure to high levels of corticosterone earlier in development. Overall, we found no evidence that repeated disturbance influenced either growth rates or HPA axis programming of Leach's Storm‐Petrel chicks.  相似文献

To investigate the proximate influence of a changing food availability on the seasonal fattening of migratory birds, garden warblers (Sylvia borin) following postnuptial moult were food restricted once a week. Body mass, food intake, plasma hormone and metabolite levels were measured and compared to birds which always had ad libitum food access. The food-restricted birds increased their body mass significantly earlier than the controls. The accelerated fattening was initially not accompanied by hyperphagia and may be due to either an increased food utilisation efficiency or a reduced metabolic rate. An increase of basal glucagon and corticosterone and a decrease of insulin levels prior to fattening were not significant, however, they resulted in a significant decrease of the insulin:glucagon ratio. This ratio was also lower in food-restricted birds than in control birds and may account for the difference in the fattening progress. We conclude that seasonal fattening may be stimulated by a catabolic impulse which could be imposed in free-living birds by a decrease of food availability and/or by an increase of energy expenditure. A negative energy balance is hypothesised to be a common proximate factor affecting migratory as well as winter fattening. Accepted: 24 August 2000  相似文献

The helmeted guineafowl, Numida meleagris , is a member of the Galliformes (King & McLelland, 1975). This order includes the domestic fowl, Callus domeslicus , which has undoubtedly dominated research studies in poultry production generally. Many of the anatomical studies in birds have been carried out using the domestic fowl, with comparatively little mention of other genera. Although the genera in the Galliformes have very many similarities, few anatomical differences have been shown to exist. For example, Crowe & Crowe (1979) have found some striking differences between the blood supply to the head and neck of the guineafowl and the domestic fowl.
The guineafowl has become a popular poultry bird in Nigeria, and has been said to rank second to the domestic fowl, despite its seasonal breeding pattern. The further improvement of this genus in our poultry production has necessitated increased studies into its nutritional requirements, management procedures and disease prevalence. In line with this improvement is the need for anatomical data on the female reproductive organs as a basis for the breeding and selection programme. The aim of this study is to describe the macroscopic arterial blood supply to the reproductive organs of the guineafowl.  相似文献

Group size and perching behaviour in young domestic fowl   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
To test the hypothesis that young domestic fowl perform less perch-related antipredator behaviour with increasing group size, White Leghorn pullets were reared in four replicate groups of 15, 30, 60 and 120 at a constant density of 5 birds/m(2). Each pen contained perches 20, 40 and 60cm above the ground. Perch space per bird per perch level was the same for all groups. It was predicted that, with increasing group size, domestic fowl would (1) spend less time on perches (i.e. more time down on the floor); (2) be less vigilant while perching; (3) spend relatively more time preening down on the floor. As predicted, the proportion of 3- to 18-week-old birds roosting on perches during scans throughout the photoperiod decreased with increasing group size, from 41+/-1.7% in groups of 15 birds to 33+/-1.6% in groups of 120 birds. This effect was due to reduced use of the lower perches; use of the highest perches was high at all group sizes. The proportion of birds vigilant on the highest perches of those present on that perch level decreased with increasing group size. The proportion of birds engaged in the vulnerable activity of preening down on the floor increased with group size. The frequency of transitions between floor and perches was not affected by group size but birds received more disturbances from other birds when on the top perch level in the larger groups. Thus, the decline in vigilance on the top perch level with increasing group size was not due to reduced disturbance from other birds. In conclusion, despite domestication and protection from non-human predators, changes in the use of perches by young domestic fowl with increasing group size were consistent with the antipredator hypothesis.  相似文献

Guinea fowl were inoculated rectally with Histomonas meleagridis to produce histomoniasis. The birds were infected readily by this unnatural route. Severe cecal involvement was frequent and long-lasting but liver lesions and death were rare. Turkeys given the same inoculum had high levels of liver involvement and mortality. Guinea fowl responded much less severely to infection with H. meleagridis when infected by a natural route (ingestion of a vector) rather than by rectal inoculation. Thus, naturally acquired infections with H. meleagridis appear to be of small consequence in the guinea fowl.  相似文献

During the non-breeding season, many species of territorial migratory birds exhibit a non-random pattern of habitat distribution, with males and females occupying different habitats. In this study, we examined possible physiological consequences arising from such habitat segregation in one migrant passerine species, the American redstart (Setophaga ruticilla), on its non-breeding grounds in Jamaica, West Indies. For 2 years, we measured concentrations of corticosterone, at the time of capture (baseline) and 30 min after capture (profile of acute corticosterone secretion), in redstarts in two distinct habitats, one occupied predominately by males and one mostly by females. All redstarts in both habitat types exhibited similar concentrations of baseline corticosterone levels in fall (October), whereas in spring (March–April), redstarts in female-biased habitat exhibited significantly higher baseline levels regardless of age or sex. In fall, all individuals in both habitats exhibited significant increases in corticosterone concentration with capture and handling, but in spring only redstarts (both sexes) in male-biased habitat continued to exhibit acute corticosterone secretion. Redstarts in female-biased habitat had elevated baseline corticosterone levels and reduced acute corticosterone secretion. In spring, baseline corticosterone concentration was negatively correlated with body mass, suggesting muscle catabolism associated with high corticosterone concentrations or possibly that birds are leaner as a result of increased foraging effort. These results indicate that redstarts (primarily females) in female-biased habitats suffered a decline in physiological condition, which could in turn influence their departure schedules, migration patterns and even their condition and arrival schedules on the breeding grounds. Thus, segregation of populations into habitats of different quality during the non-breeding period may have ramifications throughout the annual cycle of such migratory species. Furthermore, these results show the usefulness of plasma corticosterone levels as indicators of physiological condition and thus habitat quality for birds during the non-breeding period. Understanding non‐breeding season movements and identifying wintering areas of different populations of migratory birds is important for establishing patterns of migratory connectivity over the annual cycle. We analyzed archival solar geolocation (N = 5) and global positioning data (= 1) to investigate migration routes, stopover sites, and wintering areas of a western‐most breeding population of Veeries (Catharus fuscescens) in the Pemberton Valley, British Columbia, Canada. Geolocation data were analyzed using a Bayesian state‐space model to improve likely position estimates. We compared our results with those from a Veery population located ~250 km east across a mountain chain in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, and with an eastern population in Delaware, U.S.A. Migrating Veeries from the Pemberton Valley used an eastern trajectory through the Rocky Mountains to the Great Plains to join a central flyway during fall and spring migration, a route similar to that used by Veeries breeding in the Okanagan Valley. However, wintering destinations of Pemberton Valley birds were more varied, with inter‐individual wintering distances ~1000 km greater than birds from the Okanagan Valley population and ~500 km from the previously known winter range of Veeries. The observed eastern migration path likely follows an ancestral route that evolved following the most recent glacial retreat. Consistent with patterns observed from the Okanagan and Delaware populations, Veeries from the Pemberton Valley undertook an intra‐tropical migration on the wintering grounds, but this winter movement differed from those of previously studied populations. Such winter movements may thus be idiosyncratic or show coarse population associations. Intra‐wintering‐ground movements likely occur either in response to seasonal changes in habitat suitability or as a means of optimizing pre‐migratory fueling prior to long‐distance spring movements to North America.  相似文献

Odor performance varies by clinical state and gender, though little is known about its variation by season or time of day. Many odors, including lavender, induce transient mood changes. This study explored discrimination differences between various lavender oil blends and their effects on transient mood in the morning and evening in depressed and nondepressed adults. We also determined seasonal influences on these measures. A total of 169 subjects, 98 women and 71 men (mean age ± SD, 19.3 ± 1.6 y) participated, with different subjects studied at different times of the year. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) classified subjects as depressed (score ≥10; N = 57) or nondepressed (score <10; N = 112). In the discrimination test, subjects compared pairs of two different lavender oil blends or a control. Transient change in mood was assessed by the Profile of Mood States (POMS) after each trial of five lavender blends interspersed by three control odors. Tests were conducted in the morning (08:00–10:00 h) and evening (18:00–20:00 h). In all subjects, discrimination was significantly better for some odor pairs than for others, thus demonstrating test specificity. Discrimination was better overall in the fall than winter/spring and better in depressed than nondepressed subjects for specific odor pairs. No significant gender or time-of-day differences in discriminability were detected. There were, however, significant group differences in transient mood profiles. Current depressed state affected mood response, with lavender increasing anger in depressed subjects only. In addition, depressed subjects and men, whether or not depressed, exhibited diurnal mood variation, with better mood in the evening; the former group also showed more evening energy. All subjects were more confused in the morning than evening. Season also affected transient mood; winter/spring-tested subjects reported more vigor than fall-tested subjects. In addition, summer-tested subjects showed more tension in the morning, whereas fall-tested subjects showed the opposite pattern in the evening. In all subjects, lavender increased fatigue, tension, confusion, and total mood disturbance, and it decreased vigor. The study showed that both chronobiological (seasonal and time-of-day) and clinical factors modify discrimination and mood response to odors. Brief lavender odor presentation may serve as a nonphotic method for altering mood in young depressed and nondepressed adults particularly during the fall, a time of heightened discriminability.  相似文献

Many birds exhibit considerable phenotypic flexibility in metabolism to maintain thermoregulation or to conserve energy. This flexibility usually includes seasonal variation in metabolic rate. Seasonal changes in physiology and behavior of birds are considered to be a part of their adaptive strategy for survival and reproductive success. House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) are small passerines from Europe that have been successfully introduced to many parts of the world, and thus may be expected to exhibit high phenotypic flexibility in metabolic rate. Mass specific Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) and Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) were significantly higher in winter compared with summer, although there was no significant difference between body mass in summer and winter. A similar, narrow thermal neutral zone (25–28 °C) was observed in both seasons. Winter elevation of metabolic rate in House Sparrows was presumably related to metabolic or morphological adjustments to meet the extra energy demands of cold winters. Overall, House Sparrows showed seasonal metabolic acclimatization similar to other temperate wintering passerines. The improved cold tolerance was associated with a significant increase in VO2 in winter relative to summer. In addition, some summer birds died at 5 °C, whereas winter birds did not, further showing seasonal variation in cold tolerance. The increase in BMR of 120% in winter, compared to summer, is by far the highest recorded seasonal change so far in birds.  相似文献
