The aims of the experiment were to determine the incidence and severity of piglet- and stockperson-directed aggression in two different farrowing systems and to determine whether either could be predicted using behavioural and physiological measures recorded previously during a standard human approach test. Sixty-two gilts, permanently housed in groups of 4–5, were approach tested at 6–8 weeks prior to parturition. Gilts were moved to a handling area, fitted with a heart rate monitor and moved to a square test arena. After 2 min familiarisation, an unfamiliar human entered the pen and stood for 3 min against one wall. Then, the human approached the gilt and touched her snout. Behaviour and heart rate were recorded continuously. Social rank was determined for each gilt using pair-wise food competition tests. At farrowing, gilts were randomly assigned to either open pens or conventional crates. At parturition, litter size and piglet weights were recorded and causes of any deaths ascertained, with emphasis on those piglets dying due to savaging. The aggression directed at the stockperson during piglet weighing at birth, 7 days and 14 days of age was scored on a scale of 1–5 (non-aggressive to extremely aggressive). Five gilts savaged their piglets and five other gilts were particularly aggressive towards the stockperson. Savaging of piglets and levels of stockperson-directed aggression were higher in the open pen system than in farrowing crates. Gilts that savaged piglets were more likely to show ‘shy’ behaviour during the human approach test, whereas gilts that were highly aggressive towards the stockperson were more likely to show ‘bold’ behaviour in the same test. Stockperson-directed aggression was displayed consistently, both within the same lactation and between subsequent lactations. Stockperson-directed aggression was unrelated to piglet survival but did confer advantages in piglet growth rate between birth and 7 days of age.  相似文献

Systems’ welfare evaluation, including behavioural testing, is becoming increasingly popular in farm animal assurance schemes. The aims of this study were to investigate whether fairly short-term exposure to gestation housing systems, which varied in physical, environmental and human-input factors, influenced behavioural and physiological measures during a human approach test—often used to identify problems in human–animal interactions. Twenty-four Large White×Landrace gilts were initially subjected to identical human contact and daily husbandry. Forty-two days after service, the gilts were randomly assigned to either an indoor housing system (n=16) or an outdoor housing system (n=8), which differed physically and in the amount of human contact and daily husbandry. The indoor system used an electronic sow feeder (ESF), was more space-limited and thermally-controlled and had human contact centered on cleaning out. The outdoor system was more extensive, had much greater space accessible, was not thermally-controlled and had human contact that centered around feeding. The human approach test was carried out on all gilts 30–44 days after entry to the gestation system. At testing, each individual was fitted with heart rate monitor and then moved into a test arena. After 2 min an unfamiliar human entered the pen and stood motionless for 3 min against one wall and then approached the gilt and touched her snout. Throughout the experimental period, behaviour and sound within the test arena were recorded continuously. During the 2 min familiarisation period, outdoor gilts had lower heart rates (108.2 bpm versus 123.7 bpm, P<0.05) and tended to perform fewer short vocalisations (0.5 calls per min versus 3.4 calls per min, P<0.1). Outdoor-housed gilts also carried out less locomotor behaviour (2.2 sections crossed versus 4.0 sections crossed, P<0.05) and tended to perform fewer short (1.4 calls per min versus 5.0 calls per min, P<0.1) and long vocalisations (0.2 calls per min versus 1.8 calls per min, P<0.1) over the 3 min test period. Outdoor gilts tended to be slower to approach within 0.5 m of the human (69.9 s versus 19.3 s, P<0.1) but they then took less extra time to make physical contact (3.3 s versus 52.7 s, P<0.1). Mean heart rate was significantly lower in outdoor sows over the whole 3 min period (99.5 bpm versus 115.5 bpm, P<0.05). The results demonstrate that short-term exposure to different housing systems did influence behavioural and physiological measures during a standard human approach test and thus, systems differences should be taken into account before making judgements about the human–animal relationship on any commercial farm, based on results of behavioural tests of this type.  相似文献

Sows farrowing in a semi-natural environment terminate nest building 1-7 h prior to parturition after having built a nest for which a variety of materials are used. No nest-building behaviour occurs during parturition and the sows remain lying in the nest throughout most of the farrowing. In contrast, many intensively housed sows are restless during farrowing. To investigate whether gilts housed indoors would use branches for nest building and whether access to branches would affect the termination of nest building and parturient behaviour, we studied gilts housed individually in pens designed to stimulate natural nest building. The control group (n=21) had unlimited access to straw and the experimental group (n=21) had unlimited access to straw and branches. During nest building all the gilts used straw and all the experimental gilts also used branches. In the experimental group the interval from termination of nest building to birth of the first piglet (BFP) was significantly longer than in the control group (132 versus 58 min, P=0.04). In the experimental group, nest-building behaviour was also performed by fewer individuals during the interval from BFP until 2 h after than in the control group (38% versus 71% of the gilts, P=0.03). Gilts that performed nest building during this interval carried out more postural changes (P<0.001) and spent less time in lateral recumbency (P=0.001) than gilts which did not perform nest building. On average, gilts that performed nest building behaviour after BFP (n=26) spent 54% of the first 2 h of parturition in lateral recumbency and carried out 16 postural changes. Gilts that did not perform nest building behaviour during this interval (n=16) spent 85% of the time in lateral recumbency and carried out five postural changes. In 10 gilts that were selected randomly from the experimental group nest building was studied in more detail. In these gilts nest building peaked between 17 and 6 h prepartum. There was no difference in amount of behaviour directed towards straw and amount of behaviour directed towards branches.The results indicate that the termination of nest building in sows is under environmental feedback control. When only straw was provided the nests did not have much of a lasting structure. However, when gilts had access to straw and branches more structured and functional nests could be built. These nests may have been more effective in reducing the motivation for nest building prior to the onset of parturition.  相似文献

The present study was performed to evaluate retrospectively the influence of birth litter size, birth parity number, performance test parameters (growth rate from birth to 100kg body weight and backfat thickness at 100kg body weight) and age at first mating (AFM) of gilts on their reproductive performance as sows. Traits analysed included remating rate in gilts (RRG), litter size, weaning-to-first-service interval (WSI), remating rate in sows and farrowing rate (FR). Data were collected from 11 Swedish Landrace (L) and 8 Swedish Yorkshire (Y) nucleus herds and included 20712 farrowing records from sow parities 1-5. Sows that farrowed for the first time during 1993-1997, having complete records of performance test and AFM, were followed up to investigate their subsequent reproductive performance until their last farrowing in 1999. Analysis of variance and multiple regression were applied to continuous data. Logistic regression was applied to categorical data. The analyses were based on the same animals and the records were split into six groups of females, i.e. gilts, primiparous sows, and sows in parities 2-5, respectively. Each additional piglet in the litter in which the gilt was born was associated with an increase of her own litter size of between 0.07 and 0.1 piglets per litter (P<0.001). Gilts born from sow parity 1 had a longer WSI as primiparous sows compared with gilts born from sow parity 4 (0.3 days; P<0.05) or parity 5 (0.4 days; P<0.01). Gilts with a higher growth rate of up to 100kg body weight had a larger litter size (all parities 1-5; P<0.05), shorter WSI (all parities 1-5; P<0.05) and higher FR (parities 2 and 5; P<0.05) than gilts with a lower growth rate. Gilts with a high backfat thickness at 100kg body weight had a shorter WSI as primiparous sows (P<0.001) compared with low backfat gilts, and 0.1 piglets per litter more as second parity sows (P<0.01). A 10 day increase in AFM resulted in an increase in litter size of about 0.1 piglet for primiparous sows (P<0.001) and a decrease (P<0.05) for sow parities 4 and 5.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to retrospectively analyze causes of the variation in age at first mating in Swedish Landrace (L) and Swedish Yorkshire (Y) gilts. Production traits including growth rate from birth to 100kg body weight and backfat thickness at 100kg body weight were also studied. Data analyzed were obtained from 11 L and 11 Y nucleus herds and included gilts born during a 5-year-period from October 1993 until September 1998. The complete data set included information on 14,761 gilts (6997 L and 7764 Y). Traits analyzed included age of gilt at first mating, growth rate and backfat thickness. Seven statistical models were used for analyzing the data. Factors included were gilt breed, birth month, parity number and size of the litter in which the gilt was born as well as their interactions. Compared with Y gilts, L gilts grew faster (571 versus 556 g/day; P<0.001), had a thinner backfat (11.9 versus 12. 3mm; P<0.001) at 100kg body weight and were 12 days younger at first mating (237 versus 249 days; P<0.001). Birth month significantly (P<0.001) influenced age at first mating, growth rate and backfat thickness. Gilts born from smaller litters were mated at younger age than gilts born from larger litters even when age at first mating was adjusted for the effect of growth rate and backfat thickness. Growth rate of the gilts decreased when 'birth litter size' increased. Gilts born from primiparous sows grew slower, had a thinner backfat at 100kg body weight and were older at first mating compared with gilts born from multiparous sows. Gilts with a higher growth rate were younger at first mating than those with a lower growth rate. Gilts with a thicker backfat at 100kg body weight were mated earlier than the thin ones. However, the effect of growth rate on age at first mating was more pronounced in the gilts with a thinner backfat rather than the ones with a thicker backfat.  相似文献

Endocrine, behavioural and immunologic processes, together with body growth, were evaluated in gilts that were defeated at 10 weeks of age in resident-intruder tests. Immediately after defeat, gilts were either separated from or reunited with a familiar conspecific (litter-mate; always a barrow). Gilts were assigned to one of four treatments: (a) DI: defeat, followed by isolation (separation from original litter-mate; n=8); (b) I: no defeat, isolation (control group; n=9); (c) DP; defeat, followed by pair-housing (reunion with original litter-mate; n=8); and (d) P: no defeat, pair-housing (control group; n=8). The following general conclusions were derived: (1) social defeat caused pronounced short-term elevations in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and sympathetic-adrenal medullary activities, and of prolactin levels. Moreover, as soon as 1h after defeat, percentages of blood lymphocytes and neutrophilic granulocytes were, respectively, decreased and increased; (2) social defeat had some long-lasting influence on behaviour and physiology, but isolation predominantly determined responses in the longer term. Defeat, as well as isolation, resulted in increased cardiovascular activities compared to P controls, as observed in a novel object test (NOT: +7 days) and an aversion test (AVT: +14 days). Moreover, defeated as well as isolated gilts did not habituate to a repeated novel environment test (NET: -7, +2 and +7 days) in terms of frequencies of vocalising, whereas P controls did. Isolation, through the separation from any other pig, was responsible for the other observed long-term characteristics, which developed progressively. Isolated gilts showed high mobilities and high cortisol responses in the repeated NET (+7 days), not being habituated. This contrasted the reactions of pair-housed gilts, which were much reduced. In addition to their high cardiovascular activities in the NOT and the AVT, isolated gilts also displayed higher heart rates in the repeated NET and during human presence following the NOT, compared to pair-housed gilts. Finally, isolated gilts were more inhibited to approach a novel object (in the NOT) than pair-housed pigs; and (3) stress responses of defeated gilts were modulated by the subsequent social environment. Stimulation of the HPA-axis (plasma- and salivary cortisol) was prolonged in those defeated gilts which were isolated (observed in the first hour). Changes in leucocyte subsets were still observed after 3 days in DI, but were 'normalised' within 1 day in DP gilts. Two days after defeat, habituation to the repeated NET in terms of mobility and salivary cortisol responses occurred in control and DP gilts, but not in DI gilts. We argue that these effects of the social environment shortly after defeat were related to a stress-reducing effect of a stable social relationship, i.e. social support.  相似文献

Androgens are known to attenuate some effects of estradiol-17beta (E) in the uterus. The objectives of the present experiment were to determine effects of 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on estrogenic actions in the pig uterus and its associations with changes in expression of the estrogen receptor (ER) alpha and ERbeta. Postpubertal gilts (120-130 kg of body weight; n = 16) were ovariectomized, and 3-4 weeks later received once-a-day injections (i.m.) of one of the following treatments during four consecutive days: 1) vehicle (corn oil), 2) E (250 microg), 3) E (250 microg) plus 1 mg DHT, or 4) E (250 microg) plus 10 mg DHT. Uterine tissues were collected 24 h after the last treatment. Gilts receiving E or E plus 1 mg DHT had greater uterine wet weight, uterine horn diameter, luminal epithelium thickness, and endometrial gland diameter compared with gilts treated with vehicle or E plus 10 mg DHT. Gilts receiving E or E plus 1 mg DHT were not different in these characteristics. Relative amounts of mRNAs in the endometrium for the cell proliferation marker histone H2a and the E-inducible protein complement component C3 increased in gilts treated with E compared with gilts treated with vehicle. E-induced increases in histone H2a and C3 mRNAs were not altered by cotreatment with E plus 1 mg DHT but were inhibited by E plus 10 mg DHT. Androgen receptor (AR) mRNA in the endometrium increased by treatment with E. Cotreatment of gilts with E and DHT did not alter the E-induced AR mRNA increase. Gilts treated with E plus 10 mg DHT had lesser amounts of immunoreactive ERalpha in cell nuclei of the myometrium and endometrial stroma and a tendency for a decrease in luminal epithelium compared with gilts treated with E. Amounts of immunoreactive ERalpha in glandular epithelium were not influenced by the treatments. Relative amounts of ERalpha and ERbeta mRNAs decreased in the endometrium of gilts treated with E plus 10 mg DHT compared with gilts treated with E. Downregulation of the ERs, particularly ERalpha in the myometrium and endometrial stroma, might be a relevant mechanism in the antagonism of estrogenic effects by DHT in the pig uterus.  相似文献

In normal production practices, sows and gilts are inseminated at least twice during estrus because the timing of ovulation is variable relative to the onset of estrus. The objective of this study was to determine if a normal fertilization rate could be achieved with a single insemination of low sperm number given at a precise interval relative to ovulation. Gilts (n=59) were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: low dose (LD; one insemination, 0.5 x 10(9) spermatozoa), high dose (HD; one insemination, 3 x 10(9) spermatozoa) or multiple dose (MD; two inseminations, 3 x 10(9) spermatozoa per insemination). Twice daily estrus detection (06:00 and 18:00 h) was performed using fenceline boar contact and backpressure testing. Transrectal ultrasonography was performed every 6 h beginning at the detection of the onset of standing estrus and continuing until ovulation. Gilts in the LD and HD groups were inseminated 22 h after detection of estrus; MD gilts received inseminations at 10 and 22 h after detection of estrus. Inseminations were administered by using an insemination catheter and semen was deposited into the cervix. The uterus was flushed on Day 5 after the onset of estrus and the number of corpora lutea, oocytes, and embryos were counted. Time of insemination relative to ovulation was designated as 40 to >24 h, 24 to >12 h, and 12 to 0 h before ovulation and >0 h after ovulation. The LD gilts had fewer embryos (P<0.04), more unfertilized oocytes (P<0.05) and a lower fertilization rate (P<0.07) compared to MD gilts. The effects of time of insemination relative to ovulation and the treatment by time interaction were not significant. We conclude that a cervical insemination with low spermatozoa concentration may not result in acceptable fertility even when precisely timed relative to ovulation.  相似文献

Thirty Yorkshire gilts were used to determine the influence of elevated ambient temperature during days 8 to 16 after breeding on concentrations of progesterone, corticoids and estradiol in plasma. Gilts were mated to a boar between 0800 and 1000 hr of the first day (day 0) and each subsequent day of estrus. On day 5 or 6, 22 gilts were anesthetized and a cannula was placed in the anterior vena cava. Gilts were randomly allotted to either control (23+/-1 C) or hot (35+/-1 C for 12 hr and 32+/-1 C for 12 hr daily) environmental chambers on day 8. Gilts were bled twice daily (0800 and 2000 hr) on days 9 through 16, then once daily until day 28. A third group of noncannulated gilts was bred and assigned to the control chamber. All cannulated gilts were injected intravenously with 25 IU of ACTH on day 16, and frequent blood samples were collected. Concentrations of progesterone in plasma were similar for heat-stressed and control gilts that were pregant. However, progesterone in plasma was reduced during days 13 to 19 in nonpregnant heat-stressed gilts compared to the pregnant and nonpregnant control gilts. Concentrations of estradiol in plasma were greater in nonpregnant heat-stressed gilts than in nonpregnant control and all pregnant gilts on days 10, 11 and 12 after estrus. Concentrations of corticoids and progesterone in plasma after infusion of ACTH on day 16 after breeding were reduced in heat-stressed nonpregnant gilts compared to heat-stressed pregnant, control pregnant and control nonpregnant gilts. These data indicate that reduced reproductive performance which occurs after exposure of gilts to increased ambient temperature during days 8 to 16 after breeding may be related to altered endocrine function.  相似文献

Administration of estrogen to gilts on Days 9 and 10 of pregnancy results in total embryonic loss by Day 18. The present study examined changes in the uterine endometrial surface and secretion during conceptus attachment in control and estrogen-treated (Days 9 and 10) pregnant gilts. Gilts were unilaterally hysterectomized on either Days 12 and 14 or Days 16 and 18 of gestation. Uterine horns were flushed with saline and conceptuses were evaluated. Intact conceptuses were recovered from all control gilts, whereas estrogen-treated gilts contained normal intact conceptuses only on Day 12 of gestation. Antiviral activity, which reflects conceptus viability, was reduced (p less than 0.01) in uterine flushings after Day 14 in estrogen-treated gilts. Culture of endometrial explants with [3H]glucosamine revealed several glycoproteins that are synthesized during the period of conceptus attachment; however, no difference in glycoprotein synthesis between treatment groups was detected by analysis with two-dimensional PAGE and fluorography. Analyses of the uterine epithelium by scanning and transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that estrogen administration caused an alteration in the uterine surface, a thinning of the uterine epithelial glycocalyx, and a reduction of cationic ferritin binding to the microvilli of the uterine epithelium. Results indicate that conceptus mortality after early administration of estrogen is associated with alterations in the uterine endometrial surface during the period of conceptus attachment in the pig.  相似文献

To remain cohesive as a group, individuals must coordinate their movements between resources. In many species, vocalisations are used in this context. While some species have specific movement calls, others use calls which are also employed in different contexts. The use of such multicontextual calls has rarely been studied quantitatively, especially during both the pre‐departure and departure period associated with collective decisions. We thus investigated the use of close calls (“grunts”) for the coordination of collective movements in four groups of wild redfronted lemurs (Eulemur rufifrons) in Kirindy Forest, Western Madagascar. Group movements are started by an initiator, who moves away from the group and is joined by followers setting out in the same direction. We observed collective movements and recorded vocalisations from 18 focal individuals (54 movements recorded for followers, 21 for initiators). The grunt rate of both initiators and followers was higher in the pre‐departure period than in a control context (i.e., during foraging). Initiators of collective movements grunted more often than followers in the pre‐departure period as well as at individual departure. The latter difference was due to the initiators’ grunt rates increasing earlier than the followers’ and remaining at an elevated level for longer. These observations suggest that grunts serve to coordinate the departure by indicating the individual's readiness to move. The pre‐departure period, in which both initiators and followers showed an elevated grunt rate, may provide the basis for a shared decision on departure time. The difference in initiator and follower call rates suggests that grunts may have a recruitment function, but playback experiments are required to test this potential function. Overall, our study describes how multicontextual close calls can function as movement calls, with changes in call rate providing a potential feedback mechanism for the timing of group movements. This study thus contributes to a more detailed understanding of the mechanisms of group coordination and collective decision‐making.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine the optimal time of insemination in the pre-ovulatory period (from 32 to 0 h before ovulation) and to evaluate once-daily versus twice-daily inseminations in gilts. In Experiment 1, pre-puberal gilts (n=102) were observed for estrus every 8h and ultrasonography was performed every 8h from the onset of estrus to confirmation of ovulation. The gilts were inseminated once with 4 x 10(9) spermatozoa at various intervals prior to ovulation. Pregnancy detection was conducted 24 days after AI and gilts were slaughtered 4-6 days later. Corpora lutea and the number of viable embryos were counted and the embryo recovery rate was calculated (based on the percentage of corpora lutea). Inseminations performed <24h before ovulation resulted in a higher embryo recovery rate (P=0.02) and produced 2.1 more embryos (P=0.01) than inseminations >or=24h before ovulation. However, the pregnancy rate was reduced when inseminations were performed >16 h before ovulation (P=0.08). In Experiment 2, pre-puberal gilts (n=105) were observed for estrus every 12h and ultrasonography was performed every 12h from the onset of estrus to confirmation of ovulation. Gilts were inseminated (with 4 x 10(9) spermatozoa) 12h after the onset of estrus, with inseminations repeated either every 12h (twice-daily) or 24h (once-daily) during estrus. The gilts were allowed to farrow. There were no differences (between gilts bred twice-daily versus once-daily) for return to estrus rate (P=0.36) and adjusted farrowing rate (P=0.19). However, gilts inseminated once-daily had 1.2 piglets less than those inseminated twice-daily (P=0.09). In conclusion, gilts should be inseminated up to 16 h before ovulation, as intervals >16 h reduced pregnancy rate and litter size.  相似文献

During their spawning period (June to mid-July) in the Gironde estuary, meagre Argyrosomus regius produce two distinct sounds: regular long grunts, the most common calls, and sometimes also short grunts. It is suggested that long grunts serve the formation of spawning aggregations and short grunts announce the beginning of courtship behaviour. The meagre's long grunts include long series of 30–112 closely spaced pulses placed into call units. Each pulse produces multiple and rapidly decaying swimbladder vibrations with a dominant frequency varying between 336 and 444 Hz.  相似文献

The reproductive performance of 2484 gilts was recorded over a 12-month period at a large intensive piggery in southern Australia. Between 29 and 35 weeks of age, gilts were examined daily for response to the back-pressure test (BPT). Those subjectively assessed as showing a moderate or high response were taken to a boar for mating. Gilts that had showed a moderate response to the BPT on their first day of mating had lower average litter size than gilts showing a high BPT response (9.05 and 9.35 piglets, respectively; P < 0.05). A quantitative assessment of sexual receptivity was made while the gilt was with the boar. Gilts that were mated while showing low sexual receptivity on the first day of mating had poorer farrowing rate (78.1 vs. 83.1%, respectively; P < 0.05), as well as lower litter size (9.03 vs. 9.35 piglets, respectively; P < 0.05) than gilts that were mated when showing high sexual receptivity. A moderate BPT response was followed by either low sexual receptivity or failure to mate on 81.4% of occasions, compared with 12.8% for a high BPT response. Since 75% of gilts that showed a moderate BPT response on the first day of mating showed a high response on the following day, it was concluded that mating should only be attempted when gilts exhibit a high response to the BPT. The mean farrowing rate and litter size for gilts at their first farrowing was 82.4% and 9.31 piglets (8.62 alive and 0.69 dead), respectively.  相似文献

Three studies were conducted to investigate the endocrine and ovulatory responses of the prepubertal gilt to exogenous estradiol and gonadotropins. In Study One, prepubertal gilts of 190 days of age were injected s.c. with pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG) or physiological saline (SAL). Following PMSG injection, circulating levels of estradiol-17 beta (E2) increased. This increase was followed by a surge of luteinizing hormone (LH), estrus, a rise in progesterone (P4) levels, and ovulation. None of the gilts given SAL had increased levels of E2, LH or P4, and none ovulated. In Study Two, prepubertal gilts of 165 days of age were treated with varying doses of PMSG. A positive correlation was observed between dose of PMSG and peak levels of E2 (r = 0.83, P less than 0.001) and between dose of PMSG and number of corpora lutea (r = 0.96, P less than 0.001). In Study Three, gilts were treated at ages of 70 to 190 days with estradiol benzoate (EB), PMSG, or corn oil plus saline (CO/SAL) followed in 72 to 96 h by human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) or SAL. All gilts treated with EB at 100 to 175 days of age had two surges of LH at an approximately 24-h interval. Gilts responding to EB at 70 and 190 days had only one surge of LH. Gilts of 100 days of age or older responded to PMSG with a single surge or two surges of LH. Ovulation in response to treatment was observed in gilts of 100 days of age or greater but not at 70 days. The conclusions drawn from these studies are that 1) PMSG-induced ovulation is preceded by an increase in circulating levels of E2 and in some gilts by a surge of LH, and 2) prepubertal gilts are able to respond to exogenous endocrine stimulation with either a single surge or multiple surges of LH at 70 to 190 days but are unable to ovulate in response to exogenous gonadotropins until 100 days of age.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate the ovulation rate and its relationship to number of total piglets born in purebred gilts under tropical climatic conditions. This study was conducted in two swine breeding herds (A and B) in the northeastern part of Thailand. The sources of swine genetic material originate from West Europe. Gilts were mated (AI) on the second or later observed estrus at a body weight of at least 130 kg. In most cases, they were mated at third estrus. One hundred and twenty-seven gilts, 24 Landrace and 24 Yorkshire from herd A, and 42 Landrace and 37 Yorkshire from herd B were used. Gilts were examined once by laparoscopy under general anesthesia between days 8 and 15 after mating. The ovaries were examined and the pathological findings were recorded. The number of corpora lutea was counted, and was assumed to equal the ovulation rate. Subsequent mating results and farrowing data were recorded. The data were analyzed with analysis of variance. Single or double unilateral cysts and par-ovarian cysts did not affect mating results. Landrace gilts were significantly younger at first mating than Yorkshire gilts (244 versus 249 days, P < 0.05). At first mating, Yorkshire gilts had a significantly higher ovulation rate compared to Landrace gilts (15.3 versus 13.8, P < 0.001). There was no difference in the number of total piglets born per litter between the two breeds, but the total prenatal loss from ovulation to farrowing was significantly higher in Yorkshire than in Landrace gilts. Both the low ovulation rate and the high prenatal loss contribute to the low litter size in gilts raised under tropical climatic conditions.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to investigate puberty attainment in crossbred Landrace x Yorkshire (LY) gilts reared under tropical conditions and their subsequent reproductive performance. This study was carried out in a 2400-sow herd over a 1-year period. A total of 696 crossbred LY replacement gilts were included. Faecal samples from 214 gilts were collected to determine the faecal progesterone profiles around the time of first oestrus. Solid-phase 125I-radioimmunoassay was used to determine the progesterone concentrations in the faecal extract. The gilts entered the herd at an average age of 177.5 +/- 12.6 days, 95.7 +/- 10.2 kg body weight (BW) and a backfat thickness (BF) of 12.0 +/- 2.9 mm. On average, the gilts expressed first standing oestrus at 195 days of age, 106 kg of BW and a BF of 13.0 mm. The interval from entry to the gilt pool to the first observed oestrus (EOI) was 24.4 +/- 18.0 days (range 0-88 days). The hormonal profile indicated that the gilts that actually ovulated during the first observed oestrus was 34% (group A), the gilts that had ovulated before the first observed oestrus was 21% (group B) and the gilts that did not ovulate during the first observed oestrus was 45% (group C). During summer the proportion of group A gilts was significantly lower than during the winter and the rainy seasons (P < 0.05). The BW of gilts at entry significantly correlated with the BF at entry (r = 0.31, P < 0.001), the age at entry (r = 0.47, P < 0.001), the BW at first oestrus (r = 0.65, P < 0.001) and the BF at first oestrus (r = 0.33, P < 0.001). An increase of BW at entry of 1 kg resulted in a decrease of EOI of 0.28 days. The age, BW and BF of gilts at the first observed oestrus significantly influenced the total number of piglets born per litter (TB) and the number of piglets born alive per litter (BA) in the first three parities. Gilts expressing their first oestrus between 181 and 200 days had a significantly larger TB than gilts that expressed first oestrus between 150 and 180 days (P = 0.03) and between 201 and 220 days (P = 0.003). Gilts that showed first oestrus between 110.1 and 120.0 kg had a larger TB and BA than gilts that showed first oestrus between 80.0 and 100.0 kg (P < 0.05). Gilts that showed first oestrus with a BF between 13.1 and 15.0 mm had a larger TB and BA than gilts that showed first oestrus with a BF between 11.1 and 13.0 mm (P < 0.05). Group A gilts had a significantly larger TB than group B (10.5 piglets/L versus 9.4 piglets/L, P = 0.02), while farrowing rate (FR) did not differ significantly among groups A, B and C (78.1, 76.9 and 77.6%, respectively). Gilts that farrowed in the summer had a larger TB and BA than gilts that farrowed in the winter (TB, P = 0.03; BA, P = 0.09) and the rainy season (TB, P = 0.006; BA, P = 0.003). In conclusion, LY gilts reared under tropical conditions expressed first standing oestrus at 195 days of age, 106 kg BW and a BF of 13.0 mm. Under field conditions, 21% of the gilts with an observed oestrus had ovulated. The proportion of gilts that showed first oestrus and ovulated normally was lowest during the summer. The age, BW and BF at first observed oestrus influenced subsequent reproductive performance over the first three parities. The mean litter size (TB and BA) in the first three parities were highest in gilts that had a first observed oestrus between 181 and 200 days with 110.1-120.0 kg BW and 13.1-15.0 mm BF.  相似文献

The effect of first contact of gilts with a mature boar at 23 or 28 weeks of age on their subsequent reproductive efficiency was studied over a 12-month period at a large intensive piggery in southern Australia. Following this contact, the gilts entered the mating shed at 29 weeks of age and were checked daily for oestrus, as assessed by the back-pressure test in the presence of the boar. Gilts that showed moderate or high responses were taken to a boar for mating. Sexual receptivity was then assessed by the time taken to “stand” after the first mount by the boar. Gilts that remained unmated at 35 weeks of age were culled, and their ovaries were examined.Of the 2660 gilts in the study, 2349 were mated and they had a farrowing rate of 88.2% with a mean litter size of 9.5 piglets, of which 0.7 piglets (7.4%) were born dead. The reproductive efficiency of the gilts following earlier contact with the boar was consistently higher than that of gilts exposed later. The mating rate of the week 23 gilts was greater than that of the week 28 gilts (70.1 vs 66.0%, P < 0.01), more appeared to show a high level of sexual receptivity (97.0 and 94.6%, N.S.) and fewer failed to mate when put to a boar (6.1 vs 9.5%, P < 0.01). The percentage of prepubertal gilts at 35 weeks of age was also lower (1.46 vs 3.03%, P < 0.01). The improved reproductive performance was estimated to be equivalent to 0.24 extra piglets born per gilt.  相似文献

A synthetic progestogen, allyl trenbolone (AT), was fed to sexually mature gilts to determine the effective doses for the control of estrus and ovulation. Gilts were assigned to a control group and 5 treatment groups receiving 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 or 20.0 mg of AT mixed in .45 kg of feed/head/day for 18 consecutive days. Ovarian morphology was determined by laparotomy following estrus or at 10 days post-treatment. AT suppressed estrus in all gilts during treatment. Estrus was effectively synchronized in treated gilts. The average interval from withdrawal of progestogen treatment to estrus was 4.5 days for 48 of 50 treated gilts that were in estrus within 10 days after treatment. The average ovulation rate in treated gilts was similar to control gilts. No detrimental side effects, due to treatment, were observed with the possible exception of a slight increase in the incidence of cystic follicles.  相似文献

The acoustic repertoire of captive grey gurnard Eutrigla gurnardus during competitive feeding consisted of three types of sound: knocks, grunts and growls. Knocks were audible as a single sound, whereas grunts and growls were perceived as longer, pulsed sounds to the human ear. Typically, knocks were composed of 1–2 pulses, grunts of 4–8 pulses and growls >10 pulses. Growls were longer and had shorter pulse periods than grunts. All sound types had peak frequencies of c . 500 Hz. The sequences of behaviours observed during feeding interactions suggest that grey gurnard obtain food both by scramble and contest tactics. Competing fish emitted knocks mainly while grasping a food item and also during other non‐agonistic behaviour, suggesting that knock production may reflect a state of feeding arousal but could also serve as a warning of the forager's presence to nearby competitors. Grunts were mainly emitted during frontal displays, which were the most frequent behavioural act preceding grasps, suggesting that they may play a role in deterring other fish from gaining access to disputed food items.  相似文献
