We studied the species composition and chromosomal variability of malaria mosquitoes in the Volga Basin (Upper, Middle, and Lower Volga regions). We investigated larvae karyotypes of sibling species of the Anopheles maculipennis group. We calculated the frequencies of chromosomal inversions in the local populations of the dominant species An. messeae. We discovered that karyotypic structure of An. messeae populations depends on landscape-climatic zones. Populations of the Upper, Middle and Lower Volga differ in frequency of chromosome inversions XL, 2R, 3R, and 3L.  相似文献

Chromosomal rearrangements may play an important role in how populations adapt to a local environment. The gene arrangement polymorphism on the third chromosome of Drosophila pseudoobscura is a model system to help determine the role that inversions play in the evolution of this species. The gene arrangements are the likely target of strong selection because they form classical clines across diverse geographic habitats, they cycle in frequency over seasons, and they form stable equilibria in population cages. A numerical approach was developed to estimate the fitness sets for 15 gene arrangement karyotypes in six niches based on a model of selection-migration balance. Gene arrangement frequencies in the six different niches were able to reach a stable meta-population equilibrium that matched the observed gene arrangement frequencies when recursions used the estimated fitnesses with a variety of initial inversion frequencies. These analyses show that a complex pattern of selection is operating in the six niches to maintain the D. pseudoobscura gene arrangement polymorphism. Models of local adaptation predict that the new inversion mutations were able to invade populations because they held combinations of two to 13 local adaptation loci together.  相似文献

The influence of epistatic interactions of lethal and non-lethal genes upon viability of Drosophila inversion karyotypes is poorly known. In this paper we present comparative results for viabilities of 21 originally natural O-inversion homo- and 38 heterokaryotypes in a D. subobscura population. We observed strong heterotic effect in viability of O-lethal heterozygotes irrespective of different inversion backgrounds, which indicates a mechanism for protection of a great number of lethal genes. In O-non-lethal heterozygotes the heterotic effect in viability was absent irrespective of different inversion backgrounds. Our results showed a great extent of genetic load and high abundance of O-chromosomal arrangements in the population analyzed. It belongs to the set of central European populations. An epistasis of lethal genes present in O-inversion hetero- and not present in O-inversion homokaryotypes of moderate or low frequencies could be good example for co-adaptation of chromosomal inversions with regard to the genetic load. This represents a more efficient mechanism for limitation of genetic load than alternative mechanisms for protection of lethals. Except for lethal genes, possible epistatic interactions of mildly deleterious (subvital) genes, could also be responsible for limiting the extent of genetic load in natural D. subobscura populations. We demonstrated a non-random distribution of several combinations of viability classes among different O-inversion homo- and heterokaryotypes. As a consequence of that, the viabilities of the O-inversion homokaryotypes compared to heterokaryotypes were significantly higher at low frequencies than in moderate or high frequencies. This shows frequency-dependence as a mechanism of balancing selection for protection of O-chromosomal inversions in natural D. subobscura populations. In addition, the viabilities of the O-inversion homokaryotypes of lower frequency, compared to homokaryotypes of moderate or high frequency, were significantly higher. This again indicates the existence of supergene selection as another mechanism for protection of chromosomal inversions, as co-adapted complexes in natural D. subobscura populations.  相似文献

It is generally accepted that chromosomal inversions have been key elements in adaptation and speciation processes. In this context, Drosophila subobscura has been, and still is, an excellent model species due to its rich chromosomal polymorphism. In this species, many analyses from natural populations have demonstrated the adaptive potential of individual inversions (and their overlapped combinations, the so‐called arrangements). However, little information is available on the evolutionary role of combinations generated by inversions located in homologous and nonhomologous chromosomes. The aim of this research was to ascertain whether these combinations are also a target for natural selection. For this objective, we have studied the inversion composition of homologous and nonhomologous chromosomes from a D. subobscura sample collected in a well‐studied population, Mount Avala (Serbia). No significant deviation from H‐W expectations was detected, and when comparing particular karyotypic combinations, likelihood ratios close to 1 were obtained. Thus, it seems that for each pair of homologous chromosomes inversions no deviation from randomness was detected. Finally, no linkage disequilibrium was observed between inversions located in different chromosomes of the karyotype. For all these reasons, it can be assumed that, at the cytological level, the individual inversions rather than their combinations in different chromosomes are the main target of selection.  相似文献

Perturbation of gene or chromosome frequencies in natural populations is one of the most powerful ways of demonstrating whether natural selection maintains genetic polymorphism or if other evolutionary forces are at work. Gene arrangement frequencies in two natural populations of Drosophila robusta were perturbed multiple times by releasing adult flies with contrasting karyotypes and carefully monitoring post-perturbation presence of hybrids and chromosome frequencies. In all cases, frequencies quickly returned to pre-perturbation levels, and in the following sampling periods, no evidence of the introduced chromosomes was apparent. Analysis of post-perturbation frequency changes included tests for heterogeneity among chromosome arrangements in rates of return to equilibrium values using population admixture analysis. In several cases, significant heterogeneity was detected indicating some form of natural selection was operating. Technical challenges to carrying out perturbation experiments in the wild are also discussed.  相似文献

The cactophilic Drosophila buzzatii provides an excellent model for the study of reaction norms across discrete environments because it breeds on rotting tissues (rots) of very different cactus species. Here we test the possible effects of second chromosome inversions on body size and shape (wing loading) across suitable natural breeding substrates. Using homokaryotypic stocks derived from several lines homozygous for four naturally occurring chromosomal inversions, we show that arrangements significantly affect size-related traits and wing loading. In addition, karyotypes show differing effects, across natural breeding resources, for wing loading. The 2st and 2jz(3) arrangements decrease and the 2j arrangement increases wing loading. For thorax length and wing loading, karyotypic correlations across host plants are slightly lower in females than in males. These results support the hypothesis that these traits have a genetic basis associated with the inversion polymorphism.  相似文献

Grasshoppers have been much less studied than Drosophila when it comes to inversion polymorphisms, despite the occurrence of this rearrangement in several species of grasshoppers. In the present study, 354 males from a natural population of the New World species Trimerotropis pallidipennis, polymorphic for 6 pericentric inversions in 4 chromosome pairs, were sampled at the beginning and at the end of the adult life span. This sampling, along with the fact that generations in this grasshopper are annual and discrete, was done to detect differential adult male longevity among karyotypes and departures from formal null models, such as gametic phase equilibrium. These methods allow the detection of natural selection taking place in the wild. The comparison between age classes showed that some inversions were significantly more frequent in one sample, thus revealing the operation of natural selection. Gametic phase disequilibrium was detected in the sample of aged males but not in the sample of young ones. Furthermore, here we aim to detect the phenotypic targets of longevity selection by examining morphometric characters, in order to have a clearer idea of the relation between inversions and natural selection in this species. These results corroborate previous studies that suggested that the inversions are involved in natural selection, and an adaptive model has been proposed for the pattern of inversion frequencies throughout several populations at different altitudes and latitudes.  相似文献

Although Drosophila subobscura has been a model organism for European and American population geneticists, little information is available on the genetic structure of its natural populations. In this paper we report the estimates of some population parameters. We have used data from lethal allelism tests in four Balkan populations (Kamariste, Djerdap and Petnica in Serbia and Zanjic in Montenegro). In all populations, lethal genes were found to have a deleterious effect on heterozygotes. The N(e) values varied greatly from 370 (Petnica) to 19413 (Kamariste), depending on the habitat conditions and some environmental factors. Finally, gene flow between the Balkan populations was detected by the estimates of N(m) (from 4.68 in Petnica to 106.2 in Kamariste) and m (from 0.0041 in Djerdap to 0.0126 in Petnica). These results agree with those obtained in a previous study where the frequencies of allelism between populations were greater than predicted by independently arising lethal genes.  相似文献

The inverted gene arrangements of Drosophila pseudoobscura were used by Th. Dobzhansky in pioneering analyses of natural selection. Recent experiments have shed light on the mechanisms of selection contributing to the balanced polymorphism for the gene arrangements. In experimental populations, both major components of fitness, viability and fertility, are frequency dependent, and rare genotypes often have a selective advantage. Viabilities are also density dependent. The frequency dependence and density dependence of the fitness components are not universal. Some karyotypes are strongly influenced by frequency or density, some are slightly influenced, and some do not appear to be influenced at all. The role of heterozygote advantage in the selection on the gene arrangements is not clear. It is probably one important element in the overall selection, but viability and fertility do not always show a heterozygote advantage. Viability and fertility components of selection seem to be about equally important in changing inversion frequencies. Male mating success is an important component of selection in natural populations, and in one population rare male karyotypes have been found to have a pronounced mating advantage.  相似文献

Selection by Fertility in DROSOPHILA PSEUDOOBSCURA   总被引:6,自引:3,他引:3       下载免费PDF全文
Fertility, the component of selection due to female fecundity and male mating success, differed significantly among the ST/ST, ST/AR, and AR/AR karyotypes in experimental populations and varied with karyotypic frequency. In relation to ST/AR, ST/ST females and males had higher fertilities at low frequency; AR/AR males and females were at a significant fertility disadvantage at intermediate frequency, while at low and at high frequencies their fertilities matched or exceeded that of the heterokaryotype. These fertility differences were comparable in size to viability differences previously reported for D. pseudoobscura karyotypes. Differential fertility seems likely to be an important element, perhaps just as important as differential viability, in the balancing selection that maintains the chromosomal polymorphism in this species.  相似文献

Direct studies of mating success or mating pattern associated with Mendelian factors rarely have been carried out in nature. From the samples taken for the standard analyses of selection components, it is not usually possible to obtain the mating table, and only directional selection for male mating success can be detected. Both processes, mating pattern and differential mating probability, together with other fitness components, have been investigated for the inversion polymorphism of a natural population of the cactophilic species Drosophila buzzatii. Two independent samples of adult flies were collected: nonmating or single individuals (base population) and mating pairs (mating population). All individuals were karyotyped for the second and fourth chromosomes. A sequence of models with increasing simplicity was fitted to the data to test null hypotheses of no selection and random union of gametes and karyotypes. The main results were (1) no deviations from random mating were found; (2) differential mating probability was nonsignificant in both sexes; (3) inversion and karyotypic frequencies did not differ between sexes; and (4) karyotypic frequencies did not depart from Hardy-Weinberg expectations. These results are discussed in light of complementary evidence showing the need for interpreting with caution no-effect hypotheses such as the ones tested here. The use of complementary selective tests in these studies is suggested.  相似文献

Evidence of strong association of alleles at the Esterase-5 and adult Acid phosphatase-6 loci with the Sex Ratio and the Standard X chromosome arrangements in D. pseudoobscura is presented. There is no differentiation at these two loci, either in the Sex Ratio or the Standard arrangement from two widely separated geographic populations. At the Esterase-5 locus, alleles characteristic of one arrangement are found in low frequencies in the other arrangement. It is concluded, from these and other observations that the differentiation between the Sex Ratio and the Standard arrangement, at these two loci, is a result of natural selection favoring different coadapted gene blocks in these arrangements. The average heterozygosity at these two loci in different karyotypes is in the following order: ST/SR > ST/ST >> SR/SR which agrees very well with the fitness estimates of these karyotypes.  相似文献

Gametic frequencies in one mainland and one island population of D. subobscura were obtained by means of extracting wild chromosomes and subsequently analyzing them for inversions and allozymes. The high degree of cytological heterogeneity which characterizes these populations is not reflected in the genetic data. Two cases of non-random association were observed among eighteen pair-wise comparisons involving gene alleles and inversions to which the locus is linked. In both cases exchange of alleles at the locus is completely suppressed by the inversions. Four cases of linkage disequilibrium were detected among eighteen pairs of loci; two of them could best be explained as transient associations generated by random drift. The results suggest that disequilibria among enzyme loci are not widespread in natural populations—Populations with a lower degree of chromosomal variation are genetically as variable as populations with a higher degree of chromosomal variation. This observation does not support the hypothesis that selection in marginal homokaryotypic populations is for specialized homozygous genotypes.  相似文献

Twelve natural populations of Drosophila ananassae were sampled and laboratory populations were derived. All the populations were maintained in food bottles in the laboratory for ten generations by transferring fifty flies (females and males in equal number) in each generation. After ten generations they were analysed chromosomally to determine the frequency of different chromosome arrangements. The results show that there is significant variation in the frequencies of chromosome arrangements and in the level of inversion heterozygosity. Although some of the populations became mo-nomorphic for certain inversions, in general all populations remained polymorphic even after ten generations. The degree of genetic differentiation in the populations after they were transferred to laboratory conditions has been estimated by calculating genetic identity and distance between the initial and final populations based on the differences in chromosome arrangement frequencies. The estimates of I and D suggest that there is considerable variation in the degree of genetic divergence in D. ananassae populations. Some populations have remained unchanged while others have diverged to a considerable extent.  相似文献

Inversions fail to account for allozyme clines   总被引:3,自引:6,他引:3       下载免费PDF全文
Allozyme and inversion data from natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster from the eastern United States were analyzed to determine whether the clines at allozyme loci are due to nonrandom associations with common cosmopolitan inversions. All inversions show strong clines. Clines were large and significant for half of the eight allozyme loci. An analysis of the contribution of inversions to clines of allozyme genes revealed three outcomes: the inversion cline (1) enhanced the allozyme cline, but was only partly responsible, (2) reduced the allozyme cline, and (3) had no effect. The allozyme clines were mainly determined by the pattern of allele frequencies within the chromosomal arrangements. Consequently, it was concluded that allozyme clines would exist in the absence of inversion clines.  相似文献

Inversion polymorphism on chromosome O and polymorphism for the viability of determining genes have been studied in a natural population of Drosophila subobscura from Petnica (Serbia). The range of inversion polymorphism and the abundance of particular gene arrangements in the study population agree with a general pattern of inversion polymorphism of D. subobscura in Europe. The data obtained on the amount of genetic loads show that the D. subobscura population from Petnica displays a moderate degree of that polymorphism, compared to the other studied populations of these species. Therefore, the D. subobscura population from Petnica could be tentatively classified as an ecologically central population. Examination association of chromosomal, thus, inversion polymorphism with gene polymorphism, in the form of genetic loads show that differences exist in the mean viability among certain gene arrangements. The distribution of deleterious genes among chromosome O gene arrangements were non-random.  相似文献

In this study, chromosomal inversion polymorphism data for a natural population of Drosophila subobscura from a swampy region near the town of Apatin (Serbia) were compared with data for the same population collected approximately 15 years earlier. The pattern of chromosomal inversion polymorphism changed over time. There were significant increases in the frequency of characteristic southern latitude ("warm" adapted) chromosomal arrangements and significant decreases in the frequency of characteristic northern latitude ("cold" adapted) chromosomal arrangements in the O and U chromosomes. The chromosomal arrangements O(3+4) and O(3+4) (+) (22) (derived from the O(3+4) arrangement) showed significant increases in 2008 and 2009 with regard to the 1994 sample. There was also a significant increase (~50%) in the U(1) (+) (2) arrangement, while U(1+8) (+) (2) (a typical southern arrangement) was detected for the first time. Since the Apatin swampy population of D. subobscura has existed for a long time in a stable habitat with high humidity that has not been changed by man our results indicate that natural selection has produced chromosomal changes in response to the increase in temperature that has occurred in the Balkan Peninsula of central southeastern European.  相似文献

The contact points of four karyotypic races (St. Petersburg, Moscow, Seliger and West Dvina) of the common shrew Sorex araneus L. were studied at the Valdai Hills (European Russia) in an area unimpeded by geographic barriers. The populations of the races are separated by narrow hybrid zones that represent the most complex heterozygous hybrid karyotypes. At these points of contact, the morphometric differentiation of karyotype races was examined in 12 cranial measurements in 190 shrews of a known karyotype. A comparison of the mean values in studied samples of immature shrews revealed statistically significant differences and the correlation of some measurements which describe the level of musculus temporalis. It has been proposed that morphometric differences in the karyotypic races were preserved and accumulated because of a 50% reduction of the frequencies of hybrids. The deviation from the Hardy-Weinberg ration in the frequencies of the genotype and haploid sets of chromosomes in the hybrid zones can be attributed to a number of fatalities of hybrid embryos or the nonrandom mating of karyotypic races. The ethological isolation might arise in the evolution of some karyotypic races from the reduced fitness of the hybrids.  相似文献

Abstract Data are reported showing large directional changes in the frequencies of some gene arrangements and arrangement combinations in certain natural populations of Drosophila robusta in the eastern United States. The changes involve the same X‐chromosomal inversion differences in two of the three localities studied and similar autosomal inversions in all three. These genetic changes provide a rare opportunity to observe evolutionary forces at work in nature. They are interpreted as being due to natural selection.  相似文献

The role of chromosomal inversions in adaptation and speciation is controversial. Historically, inversions were thought to contribute to these processes either by directly causing hybrid sterility or by facilitating the maintenance of co-adapted gene complexes. Because inversions suppress recombination when heterozygous, a recently proposed local adaptation mechanism predicts that they will spread if they capture alleles at multiple loci involved in divergent adaptation to contrasting environments. Many empirical studies have found inversion polymorphisms linked to putatively adaptive phenotypes or distributed along environmental clines. However, direct involvement of an inversion in local adaptation and consequent ecological reproductive isolation has not to our knowledge been demonstrated in nature. In this study, we discovered that a chromosomal inversion polymorphism is geographically widespread, and we test the extent to which it contributes to adaptation and reproductive isolation under natural field conditions. Replicated crosses between the prezygotically reproductively isolated annual and perennial ecotypes of the yellow monkeyflower, Mimulus guttatus, revealed that alternative chromosomal inversion arrangements are associated with life-history divergence over thousands of kilometers across North America. The inversion polymorphism affected adaptive flowering time divergence and other morphological traits in all replicated crosses between four pairs of annual and perennial populations. To determine if the inversion contributes to adaptation and reproductive isolation in natural populations, we conducted a novel reciprocal transplant experiment involving outbred lines, where alternative arrangements of the inversion were reciprocally introgressed into the genetic backgrounds of each ecotype. Our results demonstrate for the first time in nature the contribution of an inversion to adaptation, an annual/perennial life-history shift, and multiple reproductive isolating barriers. These results are consistent with the local adaptation mechanism being responsible for the distribution of the two inversion arrangements across the geographic range of M. guttatus and that locally adaptive inversion effects contribute directly to reproductive isolation. Such a mechanism may be partially responsible for the observation that closely related species often differ by multiple chromosomal rearrangements.  相似文献
