Nine species of insects from three different geographical regions of Canada were examined for freezing tolerance, supercooling capacity, water content and changes in biochemical characteristics during acclimation to subzero temperatures. Six species proved to be freezing tolerant, the remaining three freezing susceptible. The majority of species in each category conformed to the generally recognized profiles of overwintering response. There were enough specific variations within each category, however, to indicate that cold tolerance mechanisms have evolved independently on a number of different occassions. Specific physiological and biochemical anomalies in these insects were discussed. 相似文献

Freezing-susceptible adult Ips acuminatus hibernate underneath bark of Scots pine. The beetles lower their supercooling points from ?20 to ?34°C due to accumulation of low molecular weight antifreezes. The capability of specimens to supercool to about ?20°C in the absence of cryoprotective solutes during winter, seemed to be at least partially attributable to the presence of a thermal hysteresis factor at 3–4°C.Using a GC-MS-COM technique, a unique combination of accumulated solutes present only in specimens demonstrating supercooling points below ?20°C was identified as ethylene glycol, mannitol, sorbitol and dulcitol. Not previously found in nature, ethylene glycol was the major solute (90%) synthesized at sub-zero temperatures. Exposure to ?10°C was an effective cue to accumulation of ethylene glycol and nearly 5 times as effective in promoting sorbitol synthesis than was ?5°C. When low molecular weight substances were lost at high temperatures, they were not re-synthesized in beetles re-exposed to sub-zero temperature. The supercooling point was closely related to both the concentration of ethylene glycol and to the haemolymph melting point. Attempts to correlate changes in sorbitol concentrations to changes in supercooling points were not conclusive.Proliferation of thermal hysteresis was observed in the beginning of November. A melting-hysteresis freezing point differential of about 3.6°C was demonstrated in the haemolymph of beetles during December. No thermal hysteresis was demonstrated in the haemolymph of positive phototactic beetles or in the outdoor beetles in May. The combination of high temperature and long photoperiod appeared to be a more effective cue to the final loss of thermal hysteresis than was high temperature alone. 相似文献

Overwintering larvae of the Cucujid beetle, Cucujus clavipes, were freeze tolerant, able to survive the freezing of their extracellular body fluids, during the winter of 1978–1979. These larvae had high levels of polyols (glycerol and sorbitol), thermal hysteresis proteins and haemolymph ice nucleators that prevented extensive supercooling (the supercooling points of the larvae were ? 10°C), thus preventing lethal intracellular ice formation. In contrast, C. clavipes larvae were freeze suspectible, died if frozen, during the winter of 1982–1983, but supercooled to ~ ? 30°C. The absence of the ice nucleators in the 1982–1983 larvae, obviously essential in the now freeze-susceptible insects, was the major detected difference in the larvae from the 2 years. However, experiments in which the larvae were artifically seeded at ? 10°C (the temperature at which the natural haemolymph ice nucleators produced spontaneous nucleation in the 1978–1979 freeze tolerant larvae) demonstrated that the absence of the ice nucleators was not the critical factor, or at least not the only critical factor, responsible for the loss of freeze tolerance in the 1982–1983 larvae. The lower lethal temperatures for the larvae were approximately the same during the 2 winters in spite of the change in overwintering strategy. 相似文献

Some new developmental features previously unreported in, the life- cycle of an amoeba Malamoeba scolyti, which cause cysts in Malpighian tubules of the bark beetle Dryocoetes autographus, are described by means of light, phase-contrast, Nomarski interference, and electron microscopy. Two developmental phases are presumed to take place in the life cycle of M. scolyti: a phase with large multinucleate amoebae (trophozoites) developing in the gut and caecum of the host, and a phase (parasitic phase) causing cysts in the Malpighian tubules. Some data on the host-parasite relationship and rate of infection are also discussed. 相似文献

Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) are more hesitant to continue attacking and take longer to kill and eat stridulating passalid beetles (Odontotaenius disjunctus) than silenced beetles. This is an experimental demonstration of the deterrent capability of disturbance stridulation by an insect that has no active defences against the predator. Stridulation is not necessary for congregation by colony members. Silenced beetles congregate as effectively as controls. There is no evidence that the disturbance stridulation causes predictable responses in other colony members of this presocial beetle. 相似文献

Healthy and Contortylenchus reversus infected Douglas Fir beetles were colonized in logs in the laboratory. At 7, 14, and 23 days after introduction of the beetles into the logs, the bark was removed from some of the logs and the length and shape of the primary gallery, the number of eggs laid, and the egg viability were determined for each pair of parent beetles. Parasitism caused a 25, 28, and 27% reduction in the length of the primary egg gallery built by the infected female at 7, 14, and 23 days, respectively, after the start of colonization. In addition, the number of eggs laid by the infected females by 7, 14, and 23 days after the start of colonization were 50, 33, and 45%, respectively, lower than that of healthy female beetles. Despite the differences in gallery length between control and infected females, linear regression analysis showed that the rates of gallery construction were not significantly different. However, infected female beetles showed significantly lower rates of egg-laying than did healthy female beetles. Nematode parasitism did not affect gallery shape and egg viability of female Douglas Fir beetles. Mating of healthy female beetles with infected males affected neither the gallery length nor the fecundity of the uninfected females. 相似文献

Fusarium solani, a common colonist of beetle-infested elm bark, has been isolated from dead larvae and adults of the large elm bark beetle, Scolytus scolytus. Two infectivity tests indicated that this fungus is probably a weak pathogen of the larval stages of the beetle. Total mortality was not achieved in either test, but the mortality associated with fungal inoculation was occasionally significantly greater than the mortality in the uninoculated controls in both experiments (P<0.05, experiment A; P<0.025, experiment B). Disease symptoms suggest that the larvae attacked by F. solani may have died from bacterial infection. 相似文献

The only effect attributable solely to lead exposure (50μg·l?1, 30 days) in lobsters, Homarusamericanus (Milne Edwards), was decreased pentose shunt activity (G6PDH) in the antennal gland, which contained the greatest concentration of lead taken up by the tissues analyzed. Similarly-exposed lobsters were subsequently held for 2 days in clean, aerated sea water at either ambient or low salinity (27 or 17%., respectively), after which time the lead concentration in the antennal gland had dropped by one-third and G6PDH had returned to control values. Low-salinity effects far outnumbered lead-induced effects and were found primarily in the tail muscle, corroborating findings in an earlier study with cadmium. In that earlier study, cadmium produced more metabolic disturbance than did the lead exposure reported here. Lead exposure at low salinity abolished several normal hyposaline reactions seen in control animals. 相似文献

Abstract. 1. Introduced insects often incorporate native plants into their diets and might be expected to show a predilection for novel hosts that are phylogenetically related to their normal hosts. The lily leaf beetle, Lilioceris lilii (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is an introduced pest of cultivated lilies. Oviposition behaviour, larval behaviour, and development of L. lilii was examined on a range of potential host plants, as well as on the normal host, Asiatic hybrid lilies Lilium sp.
2. Neonate larval feeding behaviour was quantified on 15 food plant species: 10 from the Liliales, three from the Asparagales and two eudicots. Larvae fed plants closely related to the genus Lilium were more likely to initiate feeding, less likely to abandon their food leaf, and consumed more leaf area.
3. In no-choice tests, females oviposited on the novel hosts Lilium philadelphicum , Medeola virginiana , Clintonia borealis , Streptopus amplexifolius , and Polygonatum biflorum ; however, all but L. philadelphicum received very few eggs. Non- Lilium novel hosts were not used for oviposition when presented along with Asiatic lilies in choice tests.
4. A single individual was reared to the adult stage on the novel host S. amplexifolius . Several larvae survived to the pupal stage on M. virginiana , although no adults emerged from those pupae. Larvae reared on the native wood lily L. philadelphicum performed equally well or better than on the Asiatic cultivar.
5. Our results indicate that the lily leaf beetle poses a threat to native Liliaceae. Several native Lilium species, including L. philadelphicum , are threatened or endangered in certain jurisdictions throughout their range; these species should be monitored closely for colonisation by the beetle. 相似文献

The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Gonocephalum outreyi was determined by using next-generation sequencing approach. The full length of this mitogenome is 15,836?bp, which consists of 37 typical metazoan mitochondrial genes with an identical genome organization to ancestral insects. The majority of the protein-coding genes begin with the codon ATN, except for cox1 and cox2 with AAT and AAA, respectively. To elucidate the phylogenetic position of G. outreyi, we used various sequence coding schemes for protein-coding genes and the combined nucleotide sequences of all mitochondrial genes for tree building under the Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood inferences. The phylogenetic results consistently supported G. outreyi as a member of the family Tenebrionidae. The monophyly of both Tenebrionoidea and Tenebrionidae were strongly supported. The Scraptiidae and Melandryidae were recovered to be non-monophyletic in regards to the Osphya. Within Tenebrionidae, the subfamilies Diaperinae and Tenebrioninae were found to be non-monophyletic. 相似文献

In field and laboratory studies, mortality of African black beetle, Heteronychus arator, in the winter-rainfall, Mediterranean-type climate region of south-western Australia was higher in the late immature stages during summer than in the early immature stages that occur during spring, a contrast to summer-rainfall climatic regions. Greatest mortality occurred around the pupal stage in contrasting soil types, despite drying differences in summer and supplementary watering in some plots. Sampling of natural populations confirmed experimental results that mortality in late immature stages is the major factor limiting H. arator populations under a Mediterranean-type climate. Inter-generation increase in H. arator abundance was uncommon, explaining the consistent abundance typically observed between years in south-western Australia. Random dispersal of newly emerged adults in autumn was inferred to restore uniformity in adult abundance between areas of varying favourability for immature survival. 相似文献

Platypus koryoensis (Murayama) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Platypodinae) is a minute ambrosia beetle that can cause significant damage to live oak trees (Quercus mongolica) along with its symbiotic pathogenic fungus (Raffaelea sp.). Although both sexes of the beetle have a number of cuticular depressions for carrying microorganisms, only the females have mycangia that are typical in size on the pronotum. The mycangial cavities are filled with a mass of amorphous substances including yeast-like spores. In addition, mycangial cavities are equipped with cuticular pores which release substances to support symbiotic microorganisms during storage. Small depressions of both sexes can be subdivided into two clusters according to their relative sizes and locations. Although they have a typical cuticular peg (basiconic sensillum), they also share a common morphological characteristic with the typical mycangium of female: a round outlet and an invaginated reservoir containing a mass of secretory substances. Accordingly, our fine structural data suggest that both the female mycangia and the clusters of small cuticular depressions in both sexes also have a mycangial function in common regardless of their relative size and location. 相似文献

Broad-scale patterns of subterranean diversity are a fascinating but neglected part of biodiversity research. Carabid beetles adapted to belowground habitats form a particularly species-rich part of the subterranean fauna. We studied large-scale diversity patterns of these belowground carabids across the western Palaearctic and evaluated potential impacts of historical and contemporary environmental conditions on the distribution of these taxa, using available species richness and environmental data at country level. Regression modelling and variation partitioning showed a strong relationship between species richness and range in elevation. Potential effects of climatic variables, mainly those related to ambient energy input, were much weaker. We discuss the implications of this combination of effects, which suggests, concordant with the absence of subterranean carabids in northern and highest richness in southern Europe, a strong prevailing influence of historical processes on current richness distributions of these taxa. Previous studies did not provide clear indications for such an influence. In contrast to more mobile and widespread carabid beetles, dispersal limitation due to high adaptation of belowground carabids to subterranean habitats has probably hindered their re-colonization of former permafrost and glaciated regions. Hotspots of highest belowground diversity are located in regions with an assumed long-term stability of environmental conditions, correlating with patterns of other dispersal-limited taxa such as many endemic plants. Our study provides important new information in the discussion of potential determinants of the distinct geographic patterns of belowground diversity. Moreover, it contributes to a better understanding of range size related differences previously found in the distribution of diversity and environmental dependencies of widespread and range-restricted species within the highly diverse carabid beetles. 相似文献

The southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) (SPB), is known to be a major bark beetle pest of pines throughout the southeastern United States. A common predator of bark beetles, Thanasimus dubius (Coleoptera: Cleridae), has been suggested to play a prevalent role on SPB dynamics. Evaluations of T. dubius have been limited by rearing methods; an artificial diet for larval T. dubius exists, and preservatives such as sorbic acid could help to maximize diet shelf-life and enhance the efficiency of the rearing system. The effects of sorbic acid at different concentrations (0%, 0.1% and 0.2%) in the larval diet for T. dubius were measured, and the effects of increased feeding time intervals (2-3 vs. 5 days) on predator performance evaluated. In addition, an experimental bioassay was conducted where newly hatched T. dubius larvae were released at four densities (0, 50, 100, and 200 per log) on pine logs infested by SPB. Sorbic acid in the diet reduced female fecundity (by 20-40%), but did not affect adult T. dubius size or longevity. However, using this preservative may not be necessary because it had no effect on the overall efficiency of the rearing system, while refreshing the larval diet every 5 days (compared with 2-3 days) did improve its efficiency, even without sorbic acid. The release of larval T. dubius resulted in a highly significant effect on the SPB ratio of increase (RI). This experiment was facilitated by the improvements in our rearing methods. 相似文献

Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) are associated with strictly entomochoric and mutualistic fungi. We studied the mycobiota associated with Scolytodes unipunctatus, ambrosia beetles that infest Cecropia trees in Central America. Isolates were characterized using morphology and rDNA sequences (ITS region, LSU, and SSU rDNA). Four species are described here: Raffaelea scolytodis sp. nov. (Ophiostomatales), Gondwanamyces scolytodis sp. nov., Custingophora cecropiae sp. nov., and Graphium sp. (Microascales). The genus Custingophora is emended to include Knoxdaviesia anamorphs of Gondwanamyces based on uniformity of DNA sequences and phenotype. 相似文献
